Brian Robinson ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 2 Sun Feb 21, 1993 F-D-PERCIVAL [Fred P.] at 07:41 EST Brian, Yep, UIS now comes in Version 3.32. Because the TT supports such a wide array of screen sizes (requiring wide arrays of memory), the UIS 'Show Text' routine will not use anything over 80x25 characters for its text display. Second, UIS is now compatible with CodeHead Software's CodeKeys and other keyboard macro programs. Third, UIS now supports devices from A: to Z: (for MetaDOS and OS-M users) with up to three columns of drive buttons. Fourth, UIS can call Double Click Software's DC SHOW modules. Last, UIS 3.3 supports Atari's Cookie Jar protocol. If you know how to look for cookies, UIS's cookie is the string "UIS3" followed by a longword pointer to UIS's variables, the first four of which may prove useful to programmers (a text file describing the use of these values is available on GEnie, for those interested). N E W F E A T U R E S * You can vertically resize the UIS dialog to the maximum height of your monitor's screen. * UIS now gives you access to 28 user-definable filename extensions. * You no longer have to drag filenames to the COPY, MOVE, RENAME and DELETE buttons - you now can select a file(s) and [left mouse button] click on the COPY, MOVE, RENAME and DELETE buttons. Or you can select your file(s) and use the keyboard command to COPY, MOVE, RENAME and DELETE. * UIS now has Keyboard commands for most file operations. Fixes and changes made to UIS III in version 3.32 The filename extension pop-up menu did not appear correctly if small text was selected for the main file window. This has been corrected. The blinking cursor can be set to non-blinking by pressing [control] + [=]. This setting is saved along with all the others from the options menu. There is now another set of 10 quickpaths available. This alternate set is accessed by holding either shift key when setting or choosing a quickpath. For instance, holding [control]+[alt] and pressing F10 will save the current path in the original number 10 slot, while holding [control]+[alt]+[shift] and pressing F10 will save the current path to the new number 10 slot. To access the new number 10 path, hold [shift] and press F10. To use the new set with the mouse, hold the shift key when clicking on the 'Directory:' line. This will bring up the alternate set into the file window. *******Brian********* Written on Sunday 21 February 1993 at 01:28 p.m. AST ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 5 Sun Feb 21, 1993 DARLAH [RT~SYSOP] at 14:37 EST Thanks, Brian. You CAN NOT rename a folder with keyboard equivalents BECAUSE folders open with one click, and one click is what is required to load the name into the selection line. That is why Hold and Drag of the folder name to the RENAME button is the only way to successfully do it. The click conventions within the system make it difficult sometimes, but when it is possible to completely do it by keyboard, we will try to implement it. Until then folders will still require a dragging method to get them selected for renaming. Hope that answers these inquiries. Programs that run on Ataris from bootup come from two sources -- the AUTO folder and the root directory of the boot disk. Programs of all kinds, usually small ones that do only one type of task, are found in the AUTO folder; desk accessories are found in the root directory of the boot disk. (The "root" is the main directory.) Your Atari loads and runs anything it finds in the AUTO folder, as long as the filename is one of the ones it knows can be run. These include filenames that end in .PRG, for example. To keep a program from running even when it is in the AUTO folder, you merely change the last part of the filename -- the last three letters -- to something that the Atari doesn't recognize as a program it can run. By convention, this is always ".PRX" for .PRG files. Likewise, the Atari loads the first six desk accessories it finds in the root directory of the boot disk (either A: or C:). They must be named with .ACC at the end of the filename. So you can defeat the loading of any desk accessory by renaming it to ".ACX" on the end of the filename. Desk accessories are always running. You find them in the "Desk" menu of the Atari. There are ways to get more than six at a time, but the basic limitation for Ataris is six. You don't need to have any desk accessories running, if you don't want them. They take up memory, so that's the main reason to keep the number down. (And some take up only a little memory while others take up a lot. Look at the file sizes for the desk accesories in the root directory and you'll get an idea of how much memory different ones take up.) AUTO folder programs are a different matter. Most of them are so-called TSRs -- programs that Terminate and Stay Ready after they are run. A mouse accelerator (the Falcon comes with a good one, and there are others) is an excellent example of an AUTO folder TSR. Many of these are harmless and necessary in some way or another for those who want to get more speed or more convenience out of their Ataris, but you can always boot up without any of them when you suspect that one of them is giving you trouble. I hope this helps! Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 68 Wed Aug 11, 1993 J.BATTEY1 [J. L. Battey] at 20:42 EDT W.PADGETT >Thanks for all the suggestions. Pre-TOS 1.4, there was a limit of 40 folders, but TOS wasn't releasing unused folders. Once you'd accessed over 40 folder, TOS would start scribbling over random parts of your disk. Thus, use of FOLDRXXX.TOS prior to TOS 1.4 is *essential*. And really, you should upgrade to at least 1.4 For 1.4 and later, TOS correctly releases unused folders, and no longer destroys disks if it runs out. If it runs out, it puts a message on the screen telling you to run FOLDRXXX.TOS and then locks up. You have to reboot, but your disk is safe. It's still a good idea to run FOLDRXXX.TOS to make sure you don't run out. UIS (I have V 3.32) does have the features you mention and is superior to the TOS file selector. In addition, there hasn't been an upgrade in UIS since around 1991, which, if I remember my Atari celebrity history, it was at this time that Chris Latham, the author of UIS, left A&D during the ST Informer shake-up to form PowerPoint software. Also, my fading memory remembers that he even had ads at that time that he was going to develop a new item selector to be called "Flexxor" which never reached fruition. I would appreciate your instructing me. I know TOS and UIS will encourage you to rename a file if you're moving/copying a file to another location where that filename already exists (or copying to the same directory), but what about purely moving/copying and renaming because you need or want to? I remember thinking when I bought my Mega STe and brought it home that perhaps I wouldn't have to use as many utilities as I did on the old 520 ST that I had. NOT! The file selector looked much the same as it did, so I was sure glad that I kept my copy of UIS! While I can do many of the same things on the desktop that UIS does, it is much more inconvienent than clicking on the file selector in the desk menu. For instance to move a file from a subdirectory on one drive to a subdirectory on another, you first have to open the drive and the subdirectory on the source, then open the drive on the destination. Then you press Control and click on the source file, drag it to the destination, and release the button and control key. Then you have to click on OK or hit return to complete the operation. The same operation with UIS is accomplished in less than 4 or 5 mouse clicks, in most cases. Move, Copy, Find, Delete, Rename, Print, Show disk and ram info. I don't see any of these on the standard file selector. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I don't really understand what you mean by *specific*. It may be that I am missing something because I didn't receive the MSTe manual with my machine. I bought it used from a dealer, and when I got it home, it had a plain Mega ST manual with it. But, That is another story. So, if there is something I *am* missing, please let me know about it! Maybe it hasn't been revised or updated since 1991, but you know what? It doesn't really bother me! It still out performs the file selector in TOS 2.05. Until Atari wakes up and realizes the potential of their machines I will still use UIS 3.1! When I come back to UIS , the position of the files is always back at the top. Why doesn't the window stay where I left it??? I'll play with the standard file selector and probably find this is a TOS feature. I've finally found a program that UIS is incompatible with. Timeworks Desktop Publisher II. Pub II will not load a file with UIS activated. You can select a DTP file but PUB II just hangs.(I am using TOS 1.04 on a stock Mega ST2) I wrote this on my registration card to ABC but havn't heard back. Regarding Falcon use of UIS. Try a compatibility test with other AUTO folder programs. A Mr. Van Horn has been testing for any slight co-operational problems with other programs that have come up to the level of the Falcon. I understand that auto installing UIS to run from the desktop (in the case of the Falcon) had eliminated some of the problems dealing with line remnants left on the screen. Regarding use with Geneva, the same can be done for that program. Where there is a will there is a way. We are currently going through some extensive compatiblity test with Falcon/UIS and will have some of these subtleties worked out soon, now that Geneva and MultiTOS have pretty much defined their parameter. Regarding Publish II, your fix sounds good. Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 132 Tue Dec 21, 1993 F-D-PERCIVAL [Fred P.] at 05:13 EST Al, I should be more precise in phrasing. To manipulate files using UIS, it's one grab from the menu bar (Call UIS). To get to Geneva's file selector, if Geneva is not 'topped', takes two steps. Or is there a shortcut I'm not aware of? This is what I meant by faster and easier. Geneva's selector is fine, once you finally get to it. ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 133 Tue Dec 21, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 22:51 EST TMAN, Yes it would b enice for UIS 3 to remember the position. Did you know you can increase the size to three colomuns? And you can strecth the selector to make it longer. This gives you more files on the screen so you won't have to scroll so much. Actually, using these two features of UIS, I rarely have to scroll...in 1024x768 you can have 37 lines and three columns or 111 filenames at once of normal sized text. If you choose the small font you can get a wopping 420 filenames at once...don't try this unless you have good vision though! If you use Multi-Tos you loose UIS III. Also various other programs seem to call the Atari selector in preference to UIS. As far as I can tell, however, I can always get UIS from the desktop, although not always as an accessory. I think there is a update due out soon that will make UIS much more Falcon compatable. "Keep on Keepin' On" For A&D Software, Rod MacDonald @ ST-INFORMER ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 193 Sun Feb 20, 1994 S.RAMIREZ [Sam] at 01:55 EST Hi there, I just bought UIS III today at a mini show here in the S.F. Bay Area. It says on the disk that it is version 3.1 (I haven't installed it yet). Is there an upgrade patch from 3.1 to the current version 3.32? The patch I saw said it was from 3.3 to 3.32 but none from 3.1 to anything! Sam Ramirez ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 194 Sun Feb 20, 1994 BRIAN.H [ST~SysOp] at 08:37 EST Sam, the upgrade path is via sending your disk back to A and D. I think it costs about ten dollars. However, it is well worth this upgrade! I waited over a year to upgrade it and I wish I had did it ritght away! ~~Brian..Written on Sunday 20 February 1994 at 09:36 a.m. ADT ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 195 Sun Feb 20, 1994 J.KRZYSZTOW [JEFFREY] at 16:10 EST ST-INFORMER I don't know his mail address, but here can be reached by Internet mail from GEnie at the address: STEVER@SGI.COM@INET# I have sent him email several times. Wrong? Anyway it seems I only have the desktop on a TOS2.06 Mega E. Frank ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 198 Mon Feb 28, 1994 ST-INFORMER at 14:32 EST FRANK: Wrong, the 1.44 format is available from the MegaSTE desktop, it yoyu computer is properly equipped. The UIS ability to do that is waiting for the UIS.III v.3.5 which is currently in upgrade and soon to release. (originally planned for 1stQ94, things are on schedule) Hope by the end of March to be able to announce a compatiblity release, and shortly thereafter an upgrade release. I have v.3.32 which mostly works with my Falcon but I could use enhanced compatibility... or would I just want to upgrade? ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 200 Thu Mar 03, 1994 ST-INFORMER at 17:30 EST regarding compatibility release... I was referring to the compatibility with the Falcon Higher resolutions, which I understand gives UIS.III some problems. This type of thing will occur in the future (changes in res) so we want to get a compatiblity release to deal with that as well as Multi-TOS and Geneva use. Our enhancement program will follow the compatiblity release and will incorporate all the neat ideas that folks have left for us here in this topic. Thanks ALL for your help thus far. I tried the fix to UIS III suggested by EXPLORER.1 for the lockup with Timeworks Publisher 2 (click on "Universal Item Selector III" in the setup screen) It didn't help. 1) Is there another fix? or 2) Will version 3.5 fix the load hangup? thanx Bud ------------
