Calamus Output Primer ===================== In this text I will outline a variety of parameters to bear in mind when sending files for output or requesting one of our other services. Service Urgency: ================ Normal service relates to next day service for small files, Expedited service entails same day or while-you-wait service. If we are in the middle of another file we will complete that job first. File Name/Pages: ================ Here you must place the name(s) of the CDKs to process, the lower portion of this box is for placing page specifics, (here you can write the number of pages to be output and their relevant page numbers). Media: ====== There are 3 types of Media that can be produced from our imagesetter; Paper, Film and Plates. At the moment, we only handle Paper and Film. Specifying Paper will produce a hardcopy similar in look to what a laser printer produces, but of a far superior quality, this type of media is similar to what is termed "Camera ready art" or "Paper Stats". Specifying Film will produce a page on a transparent film. This may be useful for producing overheads and Film plates for printing, Line Art Negatives for photography and other types of transparent Art. Specs: ====== Positive and Negative are fairly straight forward in their nature and can be used for either paper or film. RREU and RRED usually relate to film only. RREU means Right Reading Emulsion UP, and RRED means Right Reading Emulsion Down. RRED is usually specified for Offset and Litho printing, RREU is usually spec'd for flexo and screen printing. Positive = Inverted Off Negative = Inverted On RRED = Mirrored On/Inverted On RREU = Mirrored Off/Inverted On LPI === This relates to your screening densities as defined in the Raster Generator (Calamus S/SL only). Calamus 1.09N files with Raster Areas requiring specific line Densities will be output using Calamus SL. To determine what the best LPI for your output it is usually best to talk to your printer. A rough guideline to use is that for jobs which will be produced by photocopying of to be printed on Newsprint you should specify between 50 and 85 LPI. For offset printing and magazine quality publications you should specify between 85 and 150 LPI. The UltreSetter will output Color Seps up to 133 LPI, however for 150 LPI we recommend Black and White and grayscale. At the moment the LPI is specified as LPCM in Calamus SL, to get the LPCM from your LPI you divide the LPI by 2.54. Seps: ===== This is for producing four-color process printed jobs, you may also produce jobs with 2, 3 or 4 spot colors by substituting one of the Process color for the Spot color you need. Chromalins and Color Keys are required for jobs specifying Color Seps. We cannot guarantee Color Seps without either a Chromalin or Color Key (So you must budget for this when you cost out a job). Services: ========= Due to the nature of Design and DTP, some Calamus Users may require special handling of their files. We can provide you with a variety of additional services, these include: the design of logos, corporate ID system, templates, brochures, etc.. The creation of illustrations, scanning of artwork and photos, media transfers and special preparation of files (such as photo-manipulation of scans, autotracing art and clean-up). For Scannning purposes you should bear the following criteria in mind: the original size of your source, the required size for the finished scan, the final line screen of your image and the number of planes required. N.B. 1 Bit plane = Black and White 8 Bit planes = 256 Greyscale or 256 Colors 24 Bit planes = 256 levels each of RGB or CMY 32 Bit planes = 8 bits each of RGB and an 8 bit Alpha or 8 bits each of CMYK. It is important to remember that some of these files can be huge, for example; a letter sized 1 bit 300dpi file is approximately 1 Mbyte, an 8 bit 300dpi greyscale file is about 8Mbyte etc.. So when you send a Image in for scanning, remember that the file may be massive ... send the correct media for this. When we scan an image (Photo, Art, etc,.) we like to know what the final size and line screen are going to be so that we can scan accordingly. Let's say that you send us a 4x5 photo and you want the final image to be 2x2.5 @ 120 lines. We would then scan the image @ 120 DPI and this will give you correct size for your line screen. The following is a formula we use for this calculation: Scanning Resolution = (Line Screen x 2)/scaling factor SR = (120x2)/2 SR = 240/2 SR = 120 If you require assistance on any of these areas please feel free to call us. We are also able to provide you with CRI's for the varying LPI's you may require for you output files. For pricing refer to the prices shown below.
