I am a recording artist with 7 albums and an eight will be released on the Mercury/Ploygram label entitled "Listen Love" on April 16 (official release date). I am a composer and an ATARI ST/Hybrid Arts user and this system was used in the process of making my latest album. Music has been my entire life. I've never had any formal training but of course, I am familiar with the basics of music. My music comes from my heart and my soul. So, I am seeking a software that will interpret my music as I play it and arrange it without having to be concerned where rests are and where triplets are and so on... I'm interested in a software that will print my music as I played it (the entire orchestration, etc.). If anyone knows or can recommend a software that can fill this need, please leave E-Mail (W.VARGAS2) or reply in this very same topic. Thank you. Harry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 3 Mon Apr 15, 1991 G.T.GRAY [Gary Gray] at 09:25 EDT Jon, In a word, NOTATOR! C Labs Notator does real time scoring you want and is fifty times the sequencer that Hybrid Arts makes. I am a dealer I sell more copies of Notator than all other midi software combined. It is expensive especially if you want Smpte with. But it is the best by far on the Atari an arguably on any machine at any price. Thanks Gary Gray Megabyte Plus ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 4 Tue Apr 16, 1991 M.JONES52 [Jonesy] at 21:51 EDT Jon, For what it's worth, last summer I rented my 1040 ST to a local recording studio (Narada, in Milwaukee) because the artist flying in from Germany needed it for final editing for mastering. What was he using? Notator. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 5 Wed Apr 17, 1991 J.KERKHOFF [J.Kerkhoff] at 02:12 EDT I'll put in my vote for Notator also. I am also a dealer for C-Lab products and the Notator package is a very good selling and well supported sequencer/notation program. Gary: Where are you located? Might be interesting to hear a little abt your store sometime. I didn't realize how many other Notator vendors there are up here on GEnie. Jim ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 6 Wed Apr 17, 1991 G.T.GRAY [Gary Gray] at 14:05 EDT Jim, We are a primarily Atari dealer in Houston. Some clone stuff as well. I have sold a bunch of copies of Notator. In fact Notator sell more hardware for me than any single program. People come in and say I need an Atari to run Notator. Heh! I don't argue with them. Thanks Gary Gary Megabyte Plus ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 7 Thu Apr 18, 1991 J.KERKHOFF [J.Kerkhoff] at 01:15 EDT Gary, I work at Musicmakers in Austin - I'll bet our paths have crossed before and we didn't know it. Nice to have access to a program that makes the hardware really worth it, isn't it? Jim ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 8 Sun Apr 28, 1991 REMO at 01:21 EDT Jon, I'll agree with earlier statements about the superiority of Notator. If, however, you get a chance you might want to try Encore. It is more tractable (regarding the interface) than Notator and is stronger for strictly notational aspects. It will record your sequences directly or take them as standard MIDI files from another sequencer. It's also a heck of a lot cheaper, though still pro level pricing, than Notator. Jim Pierson-Perry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 9 Fri Jul 19, 1991 T.CANO at 00:21 EDT I'd like to hear more about Encore. I'm currently using DR.T Pro. actually since Cubase Ver. 2 I haven't used the good Doctor a whole lot. Cubase has a few drawbacks as a print prg. which it isn't but does a real good job, always looking though. Terry Cano ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 10 Sat Aug 10, 1991 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 15:37 EDT I've been using Band-In-A-Box to print up very rudimentary "fake" charts for jazz standards. (If anyone here knows Band-In-A-Box then they know what I mean by "very rudimentary"). I'd like to know whether there is another notation program out there that could do the job better. If any of you are familiar with "The Real Book". That's the look I'd like to acheive. I have a feeling that Notator is more for serious scoring than for simple chord chart/lead sheets. What about Tiger Cub? Ideally I'd like something that would print chord symbols, time signature, key changes, codas, and lyrics while not necessary would also be very nice. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 11 Sat Aug 10, 1991 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 23:13 EDT David, You could get more info in the MIDI RT. But one possibility would be Dr.T's Copyist. The Apprentice version (Copyist Apprentice) might do what you need. And it'd be less money than the higher level version(s). Apprentice handles up to 5 pages, while Professional and DTP versions handle up to 50 and 100 pages respectively. Apprentice may not support the LaserJet or Atari laser. Don't remember. I think those are addes in the Pro version, along with some plotters. DTP adds PostScript output using the Adobe Sonata fonts, as well as TIFF and EPS file output (for DTP). I think Dr.T is making a change in the lineup. There may be only one high- level version to replace both the Pro and DTP versions. Not sure about status of Apprentice. Check CAT #39 in the MIDI RT for Dr.T support. -- Harry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 12 Thu Oct 10, 1991 REMO at 19:53 EDT Forget Encore -- Passport has dropped support for Atari. Mac and PC Windows users are now up to Encore ver 2. There have been no improvements in the original Atari version nor, apparently, will there be. However he indicated to me his extreme dissatisfaction with both of these programs. Hoping that his own experience might be atypical, I'll ask here: Does anyone have anything good (or bad) to say about these programs? ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 16 Mon Oct 14, 1991 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 21:03 EDT David, You can probably find out a bit more in the MIDI RT (a GEnie*Basic service). I haven't used SONUS SUPERSCORE. I owned EZ-SCORE PLUS a while back. I don't know whether there've been any significant changes since then. (I don't think so.) EZ-S+ has a very nice user interface. Easy to use. It's limited in the stave combo's available -- maybe 4 to choose from. I think it's solo, piano (treble & bass), piano with solo (treble/treble/bass), and quartet (4 staves -- don't recall clefs). EZ-S+ lets you input everything onto a single "running" score that moves to the left as you play (or input additional notes, etc). That's somewhat like the way Music Studio's staves move by while playing. It's kind of nice. BUT ... it also means that EZ-S+ decides on its own where to break the score when printing it. I'd end up with a single measure on a printed line at times. EZ- S+ controls the spacing (left-to-right) a little more than I like. I couldn't squeeze the notes together to get an additional measure on the printed line. And when you have lyrics to deal with, EZ-S+ places them directly under a note. (Remember that it's already controlling where the notes are placed.) If you break a word into syllables (so each syllable can be under its note), that'll cause the notes to be spaced even a little further apart. Some people like to be in control of where the ntoes are placed. (Me, to name one.) Others would rather have the scoring program insure that they don't place notes in the wrong place. EZ-S+ is more for the latter folks. EZ-S+ isn't a BAD program. It just didn't suit my specific needs. I write for a vocal quartet. Lyrics definitely come into play. It's really tough reading through a new piece when you have to turn the page every 3 or 4 measures! EZ-S+ might be great for doing the fake book style charts, though. Single melody line means no weaving harmonies to use up a printed line. Just stick to songs whose words have short syllables. :-) -- Harry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 17 Sun Oct 20, 1991 ELLIOTT.C [Elliott] at 22:34 EDT What about "Calligraher"? ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 18 Sun Nov 17, 1991 E.BAIZ at 11:54 EST I have TigerCub and it does a fairly good job for me. I would not it's notation in front of a proffesional, but for me it does a good job. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 19 Tue Nov 19, 1991 EXPLORER [John J.] at 15:19 EST If you enjoy full-featured notation, you want to check out Notator, from C- Lab. It's a full-featured sequencer, with a notation package at the head end. Basically, it renders transparent the entire range of musical operations: from keyboard input, through MIDI mixing and cut-paste editing, through final scoring. And it works the OTHER way, too. You can start by writing score, and realize it (with all dynamics, pedal-points, etc.) on your MIDI instruments. Supports every regular notation option. Regulates bar-lines, ties, etc., does chord symbols, figured bass, etc., lyrics, pedaling, drum notation ... does stuff like, if you add a swell to a score, the MIDI volume on the corresponding sequence changes, etc. And it's fast: I've been writing an opera on the thing, and it just zooms along. Entering a typical, fairly black, piano- voice score is a cinch. Plus, the scores it produces (on Atari laser and a buncha other printers) are lovely. The musicians I work with find them very readable. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 20 Sat Dec 28, 1991 T.CANO [T.Cano] at 05:35 EST You might want to check out Steinberg-Jones. They are updating thier notation program for release in Jan.'92 ? Also, the new verision of Cubase (Jan.'92 release) has a much improved notation prg. I think they have incorp'd the notation program and sequencing together I hear it requires min. of 2 meg. RAM which would make sense. DR.T Copyist is excellent. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any notation software that'll be compatible with my laserjet. I have SMPTEtrak/Easy Score, but I don't have a dot matrix printer and Easy Score won't print to an HPIV without an Epson emulation cartridge, and even then, the output would not be laser quality. I have a scad of lead sheets to do and I'm considering using a friend's PC and Band In a Box to do them, but I'd rather do it on my Atari. Notator is more (expensive) than I really need. Is there anything out there in the $200 range that'll score a lead sheet as easily as Band In a Box? I haven't kept up on this stuff for a while, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Nathan ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 34 Sat Feb 20, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:21 EST Thanks for the tips. I'll nose around the music stores and see what they got... ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 35 Sat Feb 20, 1993 VORTEXT at 03:12 EST No. Notator does not now, nor probably won't ever, work on the TT. One of the biggest dissapointments to me when I bought my TT was this little fact. It had been my understanding that a working version had been released. After buying I finally got in touch with the support folks for Notator and was told there was no such program, nor were there plans to do a fix. The Notator people were working on a whole new version for the Mac and would most likely not develope it for the Atari. Daniel ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 36 Sat Feb 20, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:10 EST Sigh. To bad about the TT issue. I'd be really surprised if they didn't produce the new version for the Atari though. They have 10's of thousands of registered Atari customers, more than enough to justify an Atari version I'd think. Nathan ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 37 Sun Feb 21, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 12:53 EST Dennis, I've used both Notator and the Copyist DTP for scoring. While Notator is without doubt the superior "sequencing/scoring" package, I still prefer the Copyist for most of my work. The Copyist is a lot cheaper, is not copy-protected, runs on color as well as mono, has keyboard equivalents for every type of scoring entry, and produces outstanding print quality on everything from a 9-pin dot matrix, laser, or postscript printer. It can, of course, transcribe sequences from Dr. T's KCS or any standard MIDI file as well. Unless you must have integrated sequencing with input from a MIDI keyboard, I'm sure you'd be pleased with the program. Mark Stefani ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 38 Sun Feb 21, 1993 SM [Music<>MIDI] at 18:56 EST The problem with Notator and such is that C-Lab broke apart (it's now EMagic, handled by Ensoniq.) More info on that in the Ensoniq/Emagic cat in MIDI ... including notes on Notator Logic and future updates (we're trying to get Ensoniq to use the account they have, but it's a tough job.) I reviewed Copyist recently in AtariUser; that review will probably also turn up in Z-Net. I used to despise the program; now I like it -- you still have to do some clean-up work when going from MIDIfile to score, but it's a very nice program. Dr.T's KCS Omega also includes Quickscore, which might be useful. Drop by and take a look in MIDI for further info; we also have some demos online. >>>>>>Steve ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 39 Tue Feb 23, 1993 R.SCHILLING [Rob] at 21:43 EST Hi Dennis, I got a newsletter from Barefoot Software (SMPTE TRACK) this week, containing some very exciting announcements. One that might interest you and others: "Take Control, a development and manufacturing company in London, will be introducing, through Barefoot Software, its MUSIC DTP-v2.2 to the US market. This music notation and publishing system features high quality musical and text printout, and note entry by mouse computer or midi keyboard. It also features midi file import and export, real time midi input and playback of scores. It is simple to use and learn. You can produce full orchestras scores. This program is perfect for musicians, composers, orchestras, copyists and publishers." This is just one of a number of exiciting announcements from Barefoot. Nathan ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 41 Sat Feb 27, 1993 MYECK.WATERS [myeck] at 11:51 EST I have a repro of sample printouts from TAKE CONTROL and they look excellent. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 42 Fri Mar 12, 1993 BAREFOOT [Brad Cox] at 12:50 EST Hello all, I've just gotten a copy of Music DTP and it looks really nice! Also oour initial tries at scoring MIDI files produced the best results I've seen from such a program. I'll have more info soon in the Barefoot Category in the MIDI RT and will be starting a new topic for this program. (This may take a week or so though as we're doing two simultaneous shows this weekend - Sacramento Atari show and the Goodman Keyboard show in LA.) Also, there will be an announcement shortly on AudioTrack, our new sequencer that will integrate with D2D systems hard disk recording programs on the Falcon. Briefly, the program supports real and step time note entry from MIDI, can acommodate full orchestral scoring with up to 16 or 24 staves per page depending on staff size, can perform automatic part extraction, and supports all major printer types including lasers and bubble jets. Text can be automatically aligned with notes or free standing, and there are facilities to draw graphic symbols and import .IMG images as well as the comprehensive selection of standard musical symbols. Music can play back through the Atari monitor using tones or samples, and each staff can be assigned to a MIDI channel. Also, the direction of note stems can further determine MIDI channel output. Type to you all again soon, Brad @ BAREFOOT ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 43 Thu Mar 18, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 19:45 EST Sheesh...why are the people who oughta know so damn vague about the features of the software they're dealing? I've been looking for a simple scoring program to do a bunch of lead sheets. I've got SMPTEtrak/EZ Score but it won't output to laser. Someone here recommended Cubase Lite which Guitar Center happens to have on sale this month ($119). So I toodle over there, brave the horde of punk burn-out guitar players, tom tom bashers and other ne'er do well semi musician types that Guitar Center must hire to hang about; make my way to the Midi wing, where I find a guy who manages to find a copy of Cubase Lite after ten minutes of rummaging, but of course he can't tell me whether or not it'll fit my needs since he's not at all interested in pushing Atari software anymore, but he does give me Steinberg's CA no. So I call Steinberg tech and ask them "can I output lead sheets from Cubase Lite to my Laserjet?" "Well sure, er maybe, actually I'm not sure" is the reply. Then he puts me on hold for a while and finally returns to tell me that there is an "HPJet" driver for it. "Laserjet or Deskjet?" I ask. "Oh, it must be Laserjet" he answers..."I think"...does not inspire confidence... So, I'll ask it here: will Cubase Lite print up a proper lead sheet from my LJIV? Can I do lyrics? How flexible is it compared to EZ Score? Sorry to be so crabby, but it seems that the people who support and sell a lot of this stuff never take the time to actually see what it does. Thanks for any help.... ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 44 Thu Mar 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:28 EST Dennis, let me take a wild stab at your question with this answer - Calamus users were able to use the LJ III drivers for the HP4 but, of course, it only ouput at 300 dpi. Fortunately, DMC has managed to develop a working, 600 dpi driver for the HP4. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 45 Thu Mar 18, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 21:33 EST Lou, I don't care if Cubase prints at 300 or 600 dpi, as long as it prints something :-) Which reminds me: a while back I remember reading in a Brit ST mag that a notation module was being developed for SL. Now *that* would really be great. Have you or Nathan heard anything regarding that, or was I dreamin'? ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 46 Thu Mar 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:51 EST I heard that too, Dennis. Maybe Nathan knows. ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 47 Fri Mar 19, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 02:54 EST Dennis, I currently run an international music publishing business specializing in professional lead sheets, guitar arrangements, instruction books, transcribed solos, etc. I've received constant compliments for the high- quality appearance of my postscript laser- printed charts, thanks to an Atari 1040, laser printer, the "Copyist DTP" (Dr. T's), Ultrascript, and recently Composcript. From your posts I assume you are looking for a simple, dedicated, quality scoring/printing system for your needs. I have yet to see anything better than what I'm producing on our platform or any other for that matter! My only future upgrade could be to an HP4m to replace my trusty SLM 804 (600dpi looks awfully attractive!) Mark Stefani ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 48 Fri Mar 19, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 20:28 EST A notation module WAS just about completed and then shelved. I was never able to determine what happened with it. Sorry. Sigh. That is definitely one module I'd have snapped up. Is there any chance that Steinberg or Barefoot or Dr. T et. al. may develop a format that'll import into Calamus? ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 50 Sat Mar 20, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 03:06 EST Dennis, If your scoring program of choice can create postscript files, than CompoScript can convert them into IMG format for importing into various DTP programs. I don't know about Calamus, but it definitely works with PageStream 2.2. The Copyist DTP has a notation to postscript conversion utility to bridge the gap, but I never could get PageStream to directly read, display, and import the postscript file itself. Until CompoScript! Mark Stefani ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 51 Sat Mar 20, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 08:13 EST Mark, that sounds like a possibility except that as an IMG the score would be uneditable (except for cropping and resizing). The SL concept is that of a shell that essentially just handles file and printing functions and can be customized by specific modules that do their work from within that shell, that's why a notation module seems like such a natural for it. All I'm trying to do right now is find a way to do 15 lead sheets for a show off my laser without having to resort to using EZ Score and borrowing a dot matrix printer. Cubase Lite sounds like a good choice at $119 but such vague references as "will even print your music as a score" in its literature doesn't tell me much, especially when the store that has it on sale in their catalog doesn't seem to have ever run the program to see its capabilities. If it's not what I really need, I'd just as soon spend the money on more Calamus fun stuff. Maybe I'll go back to Guitar Center next week and shame them into running it for me on their sole remaining Atari Stacy. This store at least is not particularly interested in pushing Atari solutions, despite the fact that their sale catalogs sell STEs. Go figure.... ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 52 Sat Mar 20, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 11:54 EST Dennis, If your show project is basically a "one-shot" venture, I can understand your desire to save as much money as possible. In that case, unless you absolutely need high-res laser printing, I would probably just borrow a dot matrix and use your EZ Score program. That advertising statement for CuBase Lite would make me highly suspicious as well (unless you could see the output). If you plan to create lead sheets on a regular basis and ARE concerned over a "professional appearance," I've only seen high- quality laser output from Notator and The Copyist. In that case, my vote for printing/editing "power without the price" would still have to go to Dr. T's. Incidentally, I don't know if you've ever seen postscript music scoring with the Adobe Sonata fonts, but once I had there was no going back. I mean, we're talkin' the REAL thing! The difference is as dramatic as going from dot matrix to laser. But again, if your needs don't require this investment, it's a moot point. Good luck! Mark Stefani ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 53 Sat Mar 20, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 15:56 EST Dr. T's also has TIFF export built-in so anything you create in it can be easily imported into Calamus. Or maybe you'd get an error during the copy operation. -- Harry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 63 Thu Aug 26, 1993 P.THOMPSON19 [PAUL] at 08:47 EDT Harry, I tried copying it with procopy and something else I can't remember. I also tried running it from the original disk. In all cases, all I got was the alert box that says "data on disk may be damaged". I can "read" some of the song files, but the .prg seems to be unworkable. Paul ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 64 Sat Aug 28, 1993 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 00:05 EDT Paul, I don't recall whether you mentioned your TOS version, etc. I don't know whether there are any incompatibilities. And I'm sure you're using a color monitor. Are you _booting_ from the diskette itself? I don't know whether it's required. But I do recall that that's how I used Music Studio when I was using it. Maybe you _have_ to boot from the original diskette. If you have a hard drive, either turn it off (I guess) or press the appropriate key combo to cause your ST to boot from the floppy instead of booting from your hard drive. I think you'd need to hold down the Control, Alternate, and Esc keys. But don't press them until immediately after the floppy's light comes on. Good luck. And, if needed, you could probably find another used copy of Music Studio for ...... well, for just a little bit. -- Harry ------------ Category 10, Topic 4 Message 65 Wed Sep 01, 1993 P.THOMPSON19 [PAUL] at 08:27 EDT Thanks Harry, I'll try that. If it does'nt work, I'll look at Glendale. Paul ------------
