To start things off on the 'official' Jaguar topic, here's the Jaguar press release: OTC 06/03 1552 ATARI LAUNCHES THE JAGUAR, A 64-BIT MULTI-MEDIA GAME SYSTEM SUNNYVALE, CA (JUNE 3) PR NEWSWIRE - Atari Corp. (AMEX: ATC), the founder of the video game industry and the creative force behind some of the world's best- known titles, has announced the launch of a revolutionary new multi- media entertainment system, the Atari Jaguar. The launch will be supported by aggressive advertising, promotion and marketing efforts to be centered in the New York market in the fall, with a national roll-out of the product within one year. The Atari Jaguar, housed in a futuristic casing, is an interactive multi- media system based on an Atari-designed proprietary 64-bit RISC processor. The 64-bit system is four times the technology currently seen in the market today. The Atari Jaguar features over 16 million colors in 24-bit true-color graphics and produces shaded 3-D polygons to be manipulated in a "real" world in real time. The Atari Jaguar also has real-time texture mapping and creates spectacular video effects. The sound system is based on Atari's proprietary, high-speed, Digital Signal Processor dedicated to audio. The audio is 16-bit stereo CD quality and processes simultaneous sources of audio data, allowing for very realistic sounds, as well as human voices, which are essential for future multi-media applications. The Atari Jaguar is truly expandable and will include a 32-bit expansion port which allows for future connection into cable and telephone networks, as well as a digital signal processing port for modem use and connection to digital audio peripherals such as DAT players. The unit will also have a compact disc peripheral, which will be double- speed and will play regular CD audio, CD + G (Karaoke) and Kodak's new Photo- CD(R). Currently, there are multiple software titles in development, which will be available on MegaCart(TM). Atari, known for such groundbreaking 3-D titles as "Battlezone 2000(R)" and "Tempest 2000(R)," will issue spectacular new versions for the Atari Jaguar. New 3-D game titles will include "Cybermorph(R)," "Alien vs. Predator(R)," "Jaguar Formula One Racing(TM)" and many more. Atari will license third-party publishers to join the Jaguar family. "The Atari Jaguar system will revolutionize the state of home entertainment as we see it today," said Sam Tramiel, president of Atari. "The idea of a 64- bit system is earth shattering and kids and adults will be amazed at both the imagery and manipulative capabilities. And we are proud that our entry into the multi-media entertainment category will be fully made in America." The Atari Jaguar will retail for approximately $200 and will be available nationwide next year. The Atari Jaguar packaged unit will include one software experience and a Power Pad(R) Controller with a ten-key pad and other special features. Atari Corp. manufactures and markets personal computers and video games for the home, office and educational marketplaces throughout the world. When I stopped in at my local Babbages yesterday I was accosted by one of the salespeople who wanted to know what games were scheduled to be released (or were being worked on) other than those they had listed in their database. Their listing ended with 'March releases' and included Tiny Toon... Evo-Dino Dudes and Chequered Flag. Oh, and Tempest 2000, too. He also wanted to know if I had a _complete_ list of all developers who have signed on, and which ones are actually working on games. Sooo, how about it? I'm sure I've seen this sort of info in the various digi mags and such I've d/l'd but don't have the time these days to un-archive and sift through them all. Has anybody got a listing handy??? Is there such a file in any of the libs? Thanks, Matt BTW - the guy who asked about the levels in Raiden was disappointed that it wasn't harder. I told him that I had read it was a port of the arcade game, and quite faithful too, as I understand. This is when he started asking what else (and who else) was coming. Hydraxxus Gene and Matt, There will always be a consumer that knows more than the average (or below average) salesperson. Consumers have interest in the product so we look into it while a salesperson who is ho-hum about it won't bother to look past the box. Unfortunately people expect salesmen to be the experts, that's why I like to look before I buy. I can't say that I never just take a salesmans word, but my major purchases (>$150) are something I look into first. The best cure for a poor sales pitch is to find a way to get the seller interested in the product. When AvP comes out everyone should take it out immediately and play it on the store machine to 'burn it in' (if you need an excuse). This will get everyones attention and will generate sales! ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 14 Wed Jan 05, 1994 ICDINC at 00:39 EST Mine is 4405. There are 2 PC boards in there, and the traces on one of them go right to the edge of the board, like this was made for some kind of controller for something else. I'm working on a way to make a REAL joystick controller, but the way Atari multiplexed the control signals in the controller makes it kind of difficult. ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 26 Wed Jan 05, 1994 DMJ [dmj] at 19:59 EST Helium, Qsound 3D is a set of DSP techniques and algorithms that allow a 3D "soundscape" to be created (AFAIK). Rather than simple left-right sound, which is all standard stereo can create, you get left-right, front-back, and top-bottom. This kind of sound processing is as much an improvement over stereo as stereo is over mono. If Atari has licensed the Qsound 3D technology (which I believe is patented?) then Jaguar games will _really_ get a boost in the sound department... not that they needed it. -dmj ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 27 Wed Jan 05, 1994 A.PETRIE1 [Suzie/AL] at 20:13 EST With an RGB adaptor the Jag could be used with a 1224, is it posible to use one of the monitor switch boxes to feed signals from botha ST and a Jag to drive a single monitor, this assumes the switch box is just that and not made up of logic gates to do the switching. I ordered it Dec 23 and received it on Jan 4. About 10-11 days. Only problem I have now is how to connect it to my TV? VCR? Monitor? The instructions say "if your monitor or VCR support composite video....". How can I tell if they do or not? My SC1224 monitor doesn't have any jacks so that is out. However, both the TV and VCR have jacks. The TV even says "L", "R", and "Video". So I inserted yellow, red, and white plugs into TV jacks per instructions. The next instruction (#3) says "You will have to choose Audio Input on your monitor or VCR to select the signal from your Jag.....". How do I choose "Audio Input"? Is there supposed to be a switch somewhere if I have the right equipment. Can anyone help? See if your VCR has a switch on the unit itself called "Video/Tuner" or something similar - I don't know if a TV would have a similar switch. On the VCR remote, or on the TV remote, you may have to access such a change through a "Setup" menu. --Travis ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 36 Thu Jan 06, 1994 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 04:14 EST Why don't they just add Dolby Surround Sound incoding? The controls are on the front below the screen and the TV/VIDEO switch is at the left. That's the one I switched to use the composite cable. If yours is anything like this, maybe this will help. Ed ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 38 Thu Jan 06, 1994 E.EPPERSON [Ed] at 04:36 EST In regards to the Sony Trinitron Video Mode -- I've noticed that every so often the word "VIDEO" is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen for a few seconds. I don't know if the "game play" is causing momentary glitches in the signal, and the Sony thinks it's lost a signal or what. Doesn't last long enough to be a bother, and the graphics is clear and constant. No interruptions in the picture. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I'm sure its the TV, but I guess it could possibly be a transient coming from the Jaguar. ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 39 Thu Jan 06, 1994 STEVE-J [DrHfuhruhurr] at 04:49 EST AEO.MAG - Well, before the title was mentioned, it was said that Atari contracted Interplay to produce "an unnamed CD-ROM title" -- I just wish they'd have contracted an INTERESTING title! Some of the new TV/VCR's have them right on the front so you can plug in a camcorder. They should be like you said Yellow (Video), Red (Right) and White(Left). They should also be marked INPUT. If you get that far it may have a switch marked input, line in or line 2. If all else fails look in the VCR's manual.:-) BTW, you do get a much better picture and the seperate channels really stand out in Cresent Galaxy. Well worth the $20! ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 41 Thu Jan 06, 1994 STEVE-J [DrHfuhruhurr] at 05:17 EST R.WATSON15 - Unfortunately, not everyone has the audio system to use Dolby Surround Sound -- QSound basically recreates surround sound in regular stereo. There is an ad there for "Express Order Atari Games Now Available". For $9.99 you get to choose from "Over 50 of the Hottest Titles". The Photo and text reveal that the games are 2600 and 7800 titles. They are all "new", which must mean they aren't "pre- owned" (or would be called "NOS" in the car biz) So, from this we can conclude that either: a) Atari is clearing out all their junk to raise Jaguar capital. b) Atari traded it's stock of old games for R/F switchboxes. c) This is a co-incidence. Something maybe someone can ask Bob Brodie about tomorrow... ________________ \hunderbird ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 49 Thu Jan 06, 1994 J.THOMAS12 [JT] at 20:09 EST DMJ, I think what I am going to do is to buy one that I saw for SEGA( I think). It has the Joystick and 3 buttons. I will then attach this to the top of a metal case about 2 in thick and run the wiring inside. I will then dissect an Atari Jag controller and tie the appropriate lines together. The Sega controller I was looking at was $15+$24 for the Jag joystick+ about $8 for the box= about $50. The wiring is not too hard, since the 4 switches for the joystick and the 'A' button share a common ground. The 'B', 'C', 'OPTION'. and 'PAUSE' buttons each have a unique input line and an output line. I would guess there is a bout 2 hours work to make it happen. I will post details if anyone is interested once I get it done. John Barney, if your TV is an older model, it will probably have a switch on the front panel. If it is a newer model, you need to go to the MENU and go to the 'SOURCE" submenu and select EXTERNAL or whatever your menu says. You may have to play a bit to set the right source. Mac Carter @ Home ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 52 Thu Jan 06, 1994 B.REEVES2 [Alter Ego] at 22:23 EST Sir Fransis, The answer to your question is "yes". However there is a possibility that the RF modulator on your VCR is better than the one in the Jaguar. If that were the the case you might see a slight improvement in picture quality if the tuner in your television is good enough. Still, the stereo audio alone is worth it IMHO. That did the trick, as advertised. Man, what a difference in picture quality! Can I expect the same quantum leap when I move to S-Video? I found that I have to switch to channel 91 to receive the AV signal (RCA)! Was wondering why when I auto programed for my cable channels it always hit 91 even when the regular cable runs out at 71 or so. Also on my VCR there are AV inputs on the front and back. Still Sailing, Sir Fransis ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 85 Sun Jan 09, 1994 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 11:47 EST Pablo, I think that the Jag is the ultimate gaming machine. If you want to play games don't get a computer get a game machine. You will never find a joystick controller as good as those available for game consoles on a computer. Plus you don't have to worry about filling up your hard drive. Besides, with a computer programmers program for the lowest common denominator. You will probably not get a large selection of software that runs on only the pentium. So what you have in effect is a really fast 386- based game machine. With the Jag, everyone will be doing there best to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture. So you WILL have a large selection of great, high performance games. Plus, you will spend 1/10 of what you would spend on even a modest pentium setup. ------------ Category 26, Topic 2 Message 86 Sun Jan 09, 1994 T.MCCOMB [=Tom=] at 11:51 EST BENDER1- I have the SAME problem, if you ever find a solution please post it here or email me. Most people set it to CONTROL-C, but you can set it to almost anything. If you're unsure what you set it to you can check by typing SETTINGS. It sometimes takes GEnie a couple of seconds to return to it's editor after you upload text. A single break will bring you back and give you a line prompt; hitting break twice will often bounce you out of the editor and wipe out your message though, so be careful. Trip Hawkins Kinda of a funny quote. If you ask me, the giant sucking noise he is hearing is the sound of air going into one ear and right out the other. On another note, I built my own video cable box so that I can have both composite and SVideo. I plugged all connections into my 27 inch monitor and the results were great. Composite video is far and above the RF signal. Tons better, and SVideo is considerably better than composite With SVideo, color bleading cleans up a lot, and the definition is a lot clearer. Somebody mentioned in a post that the improvement would be about 10 % but to me it is much better than that. Am having a lot of fun with my Dino Dudes. It is a great game, with excellent animation, sound, and puzzles. If shootem ups are not your thing, you might want to look at this tittle. While Atari CLAIMS over 100 dealers nationwide, it's MORE like 1 dealer for every 2 or 3 states since the majority of "dealers" are music stores (which would DOUBTFULLY carry the Jaguar). Atari killed off their dealers YEARS ago and isn't doing anything to improve the situation. If you CAN support an Atari dealer, do it, but don't go far out of the way to do it -- after all, several of the real Atari dealers that ARE around are 'shady' operations. We're still awaiting a new shipment of Jaguars ourselves, but we do have the game cartridges in stock. We have a shipment of Dino Dudes coming in tomorrow (Friday) morning along with some additional Composite Video Cables; Crescent Galaxy and Raiden are already in stock, as are the extra Keypad Controllers. If you have an Atari dealer anywhere nearby, why not give them a holler. With Atari concentrating almost exclusively on the Jaguar, Atari computer dealerships are really hurting trying to make any sales possible in order to survive, and could really use any business you can direct their way, even if it is only to buy a new cartridge for your Jaguar. Babbages and Elecronics Boutique will survive just fine by themselves. Besides, when you're going to need something for your Atari computer system, you CERTAINLY won't find it a Babbages or EB; and unless your Atari dealerships can make sales of SOMETHING before then, you just may not even find THEM around much longer.
