IMPORTANT: We know exactly which dealers received machines without the mail-in cards and they are being sent their cards this week. Users that purchased machines and did not receive these cards can contact the dealer in about one week to get their card. All you have to do is fill out the card (make sure you include your dealer's name and machine's serial number); keep the verification half, and mail the other half to Atari. Machines without Hard Drives will not be shipped with SpeedoGDOS, Atari Works, or FalconD2D. They will have everything else (including the hard disk utilities in case you have your own SCSI Hard Disk). The Atari Hard Disk upgrade kits will ship with Atari Works, SpeedoGDOS, FalconD2D, as well as MultiTOS, etc. on the Hard Disk. -Bill Rehbock, Atari Corp. ======================================================================= ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 2 Wed Jun 23, 1993 R.NELSON48 [Grouch (:{] at 01:51 EDT __________________ \hunderbird - It is nice to be wraped in the warm fuzzy goodness of one's friends and fellow Atarians. It seemed to have an appetite for external SCSI drives. In short, mine were rendered dead, and totally unsalvagable (as diagnosed by the drive manufacturer's repair tech) upon connection to the Falcon SCSI port. I received my 2nd Falcon. At first boot up, my ears told me that the internal HD was acting a little different than the last, making a strange noise that my mind pictured as being the head mechanism bouncing off the inside wall of the drive. Reformat after "HDX 5.03" reformat, and many "mark bad" attempts showed 0 bad sectors, so what the hell I'll use it. Since then it's progressively gotten worse, it has a real hard time reading data, and consistently makes that strange noise while trying to load files. I've witnessed it power itself down and up again while trying to read. Is this normal? Should I send this one back too? This machine was a dream come true, I really love it, but my 8 year old 520 ST has turned out to be more reliable with no maintenance in all that time. I don't want to send it back to the dealer, I've put them through enough already. Do I have an option to send it to an authorized service center? PLEASE TRY TO GIVE ME SOME GOOD NEWS. Did I drive 4 hours (twice), pay MSRP, and lose two hard drives to be a BETA TESTER??? I think not. How does your new Falcon do with external SCSI devices? I have a Floptical hooked up to mine, which, I'm sorry to report, does act a little strangely with the Falcon, but I'm not sure whether that's due to the Falcon itself or to the drivers I have tried with it. Atari's latest version of AHDI sometimes fails to recognize the Floptical at all and a reboot is needed to bring it online. ICD's latest Pro software doesn't give me an accurate directory reading until I re-insert the disk and hit escape. These are minor irritations compared to what you have suffered. I hope you get some satisfaction. Has anyone else out there had success (or lack thereof) with external SCSI devices and the Falcon? ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 18 Sun Jun 27, 1993 B.SUSLOVIC [Brad] at 00:12 EDT thanks for the sympathy, at the moment I have no SCSI drives to try, since the ones I purchased for use on the Falcon were destroyed. Dave ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 30 Tue Jun 29, 1993 R.NELSON48 [Grouch (:{] at 21:07 EDT BRAD (Msg. 18) I don't know if this helps but I'll tell you of my experience. I have been trying to connect three different hard drives to the SCSI port. One is a 50meg Seagate and a Syquest in one box with an old ICD host adaptor. It works pretty well with the SCSI cable disconnected from the Host adaptor card. Both the Seagate and the Syquest carts were partitioned with ICD software and have more than 4 partitions. Because of the way the Atari Software works I can only see the first four partitions on each drive. Each time I want to use the drives with my ST I must re-connect the host adaptor card. It is a pain, but workable. Drive 2 is a Conner 170 meg and a Seagate 80 meg in one box. This has the latest ICD host adaptor so that it can work with Conner's crazy Parity Enabled setting (I have now read that there is some way Conner can disable parity through software, this was not an option the company offered me when I complained the drive would not work with my machine!). Even though this box has a SCSI connector I must still open it and disconnect the SCSI cable from the host adaptor to get it to work with the Falcon. Once again, I can only read the first four partitions on each drive. Hard Drive 3 is a Floptical and I can't use it at all because the drive ID is set to 7. I am told that the Falcon looks for the external SCSI at #0, if none is found then no other numbers are checked. If #0 is found then it will look for number one, two, and on up until no device responds. AT that point the Atari HD driver stops looking. Because of this it is very important to set your SCSI device to ID #0, otherwise the Atari Driver will never notice it is there. Each and every additional device you add to the chain must have its ID set in consecutive order. You can't skip a number or the software gets disappointed and goes away. The "SCSI ID 0 No Response" message is simply telling you that there is no device #0 connected. I would get this message whenever I tried to use a drive with the ICD host adaptor connected or whenever I tried to access the Floptical. In hopes of solving these problems for myself I am now waiting on delivery of the ICD PRO software. I should then be able to leave my Host Adaptor cards disconnected and switch HardDisks between machines. I may even be able to use the floptical and read more than the first four partitions on a HardDisk. We will see. . . And people wonder why I call myself the Grouch (:{ THOMAS (Msg. 26) - I have talked to the people at COMPO about the possibility of PC emulation. They have a board with a 286 chip that will allow you to run PC software directly from the Falcon at approximatly 386 speed. They are talking about a 486 board as well, but are waiting for the price of the 486 chip to come down a bit. I haven't read the Falcon Speed topic, so I hope this info is not redundent. =-= Grouch (:{ =-= AL and Thunderbird - Thanks a lot, guys! My wife sez $900 and you have to take me with the machine. Is there something else I should be doing or not? It is a real pain to access GEnie on the ST then unplug everything (I call down the curse of a thousand camels on the keeping of those *&%$#@ mouse/joystick ports) re-plug in stuff for the Falcon, change HD SCSI connections, etc. Try a Falcon fix then change back to the ST in order to access GEnie again. Because of this, and because my wife wants access to WordPerfect I have my Falcon in a box and the ST running all the time. I can only hook up the Falcon when I have a free day off, not a common event. If I could run WordPerfect and the FlashII fix would show up, then I could retire my older machine and would only loose Aladin. After the hour or so of backing up everything by hand, it only took a few minutes to reformat, partition, and markbad. I'm also using a 4.02/65meg unit. One note, my F partition has swiss-cheesed two times on me (once before the new AHDI and one after) giving me something like 5000 orphans. Really messes the partition up, and the only fix I could use (due to my lack of real Hard Drive utilities) was to backup everything on F (or copy it to other partitions) and Wipe it using AHDI. Rather annoying, in any event. It would seem to me that there must be a problem somewhere in the drivers/utilities. I was wondering if the decision to only bundle AtariWorks, etc., with the HD installed Falcon will be changed? It appears to me that you are giving these programs to people who buy the HD and NOT the Falcon as it (to me) should be. In fact, it was mentioned in a DateLine Atari that these programs would be given to people who buy a HD Upgrade Kit that would be offered. Why are the people who buy the FALCONS without a HD being penalized because they already have enough HD space and do not need or want any more at this time? So, why is AtariWorks, etc., only being offered to those who buy the HD and NOT the Falcon? This (to me) doesn't appear to be the way it should be. People should be offered these programs because they bought the Falcon. Does Atari not provide backups for these programs on disk already? Why isn't the programs provided with every Falcon and let the user install them on their HDs that they already have? From what I read in this is, "Buy a HD from us and get AtariWorks, etc.". "Buy a Falcon and get less (or nothing)". From the looks of it, the price difference between the NO HD Falcon and the HD Falcon is what is paying for the programs. So, technically noone buying HD Falcons is getting the software free anyway. ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 61 Sun Jul 04, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 19:56 EDT Questions/comments from a new Falcon owner: The 3-D icons are really nice. Can they be edited or imported, as in NeoDesk or DC DeskTop? No mention of it, from what I can see, in the manual. If so, how is it done and where are the icons stored? My machine came with the Audio Fun Machine. After installing it on the hard drive, when I try to run it I get an "alert" box stating: "Cannot open DSP code [yuck!]." After exiting to the desktop and trying to run AFM again, I get another alert box: "DSP in use/will try to force access." The only way I can access the program is by running it from floppy, and after successfully doing so and exiting the program, it will reload from the hard drive. Kind of a mystery to me... For some time the Atari HDX Utility Disk contained an additional version of the driver. It came in a folder labeled ALLDRIVE and it was patched to scan ALL devices regardless of the device#. I don't know if it's still there on the current Falcon driver disks but the Atari driver is able to recognize 'non-contiguous' device numbers. It is just not the default setting because scanning all devices slows the bootup sequence down. -Johannes ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 66 Mon Jul 05, 1993 ATARI.BENLUX [W. The hard disk utilities may include version 5.00 of HINSTALL but version 6.05c of the driver. There are three main components here: HDX (formatting & partitioning utility), HINSTALL (installs a driver to autoboot), and AHDI (also known as SHDRIVER - the hard disk driver program). The version number of one component doesn't necessarily affect the version numbers of the others. As far your other problems go, I don't think we have enough information to figure out what the problem is. I've done the steps you describe and it works OK for me. But if you were able to use Diamond Edge to partition the drive then I don't think it's a hardware problem. Mike ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 78 Wed Jul 07, 1993 D.LINK [Dennis] at 00:22 EDT Help! Help! Help! I have been so impressed by what everyone has been saying about the capabilities of the Falcon especially in the recording arena that I convinced a friend to allow me to do some recording for his next album. We successfully recorded a piece to a Sony Mini Disk on a 9ft Steinway. After listening to the recording session, we decided on three parts of the recording to make our final splices--something that should be done fairly easily on the Falcon--NOT! (At least not with the software I tried.) Since my dealer hasn't received any Falcons to sell, I was at his mercy to borrow his demonstrator at his convenience. I found that D2D, while it gave decent sound levels, was completely lacking in its editing. I should have been able to splice the three pieces without hearing a pop or losing part of a note. I then tried using the shareware version of DAME I found here in the library. Although it was difficult without descriptive documentation to figure out the user interface, I was able to record and edit the piece quite nicely. My problem was in getting the information back to Mini Disk to have it duplicated. The last part of the song is very soft and I could hear the digital transfer in the background (a bleep at regular intervals that coincides with the drive access light). I could not hear the digital transfer in the louder parts of the song. I also experienced difficulty with getting the piece on to the hard drive. (An 88M removeable Syquest). Very inconsistently, the computer would lock up with the drive access light on. Sometimes I would get the message to the effect that the drive was not accessing. Sometimes I would get a series of bombs. Sometimes it would happen :30 into the song. Sometimes seconds before the end (3:30). I only had the problem when recording. I had similar problems in both D2D and DAME. The original recording is itself a bit on the noisy side. (probably due to the quality of the mixer). The final output (with the bleeps) was considerably noiser than the original and I also feel that I lost some of the high end in the transfers. Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the bleeps in DAME? Does anyone know of any way to transfer digitally (optical) to and from the Falcon at 44.1 Khz? Does anyone know how to filter out (mask) the noise in the original without losing high end? Can anyone speed up the shipment of falcons to my Dealer so I can have one on my desk? The point of it is to allow a NEW USER (very important - read: someone who doesn't already have a computer) to get up and productive "out of the box" without additional purchases. Now, someone who buys a falcon sans hard drive is _not_ a NEW USER since a HD is nearly mandatory for the use of any computer today. Now Atari, in a true act of generosity, has allowed anyone who did not purchase a HD with their Falcon to later upgrade to one, and they've even added all the normally bnundled software thet users without HDs have been missing. Then I updated a Megafile 30 using a TT, along with a SH204 for a friend then two TT's at work and a Mega ST system. They all seem to work fine. Then I backed up the Falcon to a removable hard drive after formatting and partitioning it off the same Falcon and it worked fine. For some reason it just doesn't like my Falcons internal drive.:-) Would something plugged into the Serial port effect the Internal drive? Everything else was off and disconnected except for the Prism Tablet. I didn't think it would effect anything but it's about the only thing left outside a bone dry system. I understand what your saying about Hinstall being a shell for the actually driver software. If you wanted to make it less confusing why not incorporate the Hinstall program into the HDX program and give everything the same version number. It would be especially nice if you could install the driver before HDX reboots. Ooooh! This brings me to something else I forgot to ask!:-) On the last verison of the software you could drag the SHDRIVER off the original disk to replace the installed version. The Falcon030 could easily be used to enhance photographs--why couldn't it? It's only a little software that makes it possible. Photo CD stores photos at several resolutions (all on the same CD). These are 192x128, 384x256, 768x512, 1536x1024, and 3072x2048. All of these are in true color mode. The quality of the images is astounding. With the right software, zooming into a photo image is easy. Extrapolating image data when you exceed the resolution of Photo CD (which means zooming in a WHOLE BUNCH) is much harder. Basically, you can't put data back that isn't there. However, you have an enormous resolution with Photo CD. On your digital sound question, that's simple. You can use a sound digitizer to record at, say 50kHz; then replay the sound at 5kHz. You probably wouldn't be able to make sense out of it, because of the vast difference, but if the sound you're recording were sped-up, playing it back slowly would restore it to normal. As for digital signal processing, Stereo Replay does what you asked for. If you don't want to buy it, look into Keith Lord's "DSP" program, which I believe is available here. (His GEnie address is K.LORD) DSP does several different filters. -dmj ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 99 Fri Jul 09, 1993 R.NELSON48 [Grouch (:{] at 23:04 EDT Falcon Users... I have noted a rather odd behavior of my Falcon internal HD. When doing copy operations between the floppy and HD or sometimes just when reading the directory with Universal III the HD will shut down. The pause lasts 5 - 10 seconds, then it spins up again and goes on with the requested operation like nothing is wrong. Well, to my way of thinking something is wrong. This is not a very efficent way to copy files, having the hard drive die and start up again really slows down a copy operation, and why should it do it anyway? My question is, is this normal. Bman ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 119 Mon Jul 12, 1993 S.WINICK at 08:32 EDT Bman, Its really not fair to try to compare "music" stores to computer stores with regard to sales policies, service and support. Most of us are more heavily into using our computers for a variety of tasks and have a variety of both hardware and software to go along with those needs and desires. And.... no shortage of problems and questions as well. ;-] Music stores, on the other hand, will most likely be treating the Falcon as merely another musical instrument, primarily dedicated to musical sequencing and scoring. Most likely they will also be pricing it as they would any other musical instrument, with their normally expected markup and margin of profit. Because it will be sold primarily as a dedicated instrument, they are not expecting much in the way of peripheral sales and follow-up sales of additional software and peripherals. Computer dealers, on the other hand, can afford to sell the computer itself for a much smaller margin primarily due the fact that they generally will be selling an entire "system" along with associated peripherals, software, etc. And most importantly, they will be making a long term customer who will be periodically returning to make additional purchases. While the music dealer can also expect his customers to return for additional purchases, they will most likely not be for computer related items. Since we're an authorized Kawai Electronic Musical Instrument dealer as well as an Atari Computer Center (primarily ;-), we get to see both sides of the picture. Of course, that also give us the opportunity to provide our "music" customers with more service and support than the typical music store; consequently, our "music" customers are also typically using their Atari systems for a large variety of tasks in addition to their music requirements. ;-] But to get back to your comment about that particular music dealer charging above Atari's MSRP. The keyword there is Manufacturer's "SUGGESTED" Retail Price. While it may not be good practice for most dealers to try to charge more than the MSRP (especially for ones who expect to establish good long-term relationships with their customers), there is nothing legally preventing them from charging more than that amount, or less either. Atari's only restriction is that the dealer cannot advertise through print, broadcast, or any other media, or quote by phone, BBS, or any other electronic media, any pricing other than the MSRP. But there is no restriction on what any dealer may actually sell the Falcon for in his store.
