BTW - I hate this term: NOT! You can print ANY size envelope on ANY DJ as long as the envelope has a foldover flap. What you do: download my file here on GEnie relative to nonstandard envelopes and the DeskJet. Just search for "Deskjet" and you'll find it. It's VERY easy, 100% repeatable, and works with ALL weird size envelopes! My example is for PageStream, as I believe an envelope should have graphic/font options galore, but it will also work with a word processor, document processor, etc. with a little thought based on the principles involved. Good luck, Richard Brown read more good stuff in GEnie Lamp ST! ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 2 Sat Mar 06, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 09:47 EST If you have a smaller than standard envelope you should be able to fold the flap over a standard sheet of paper to send it through the printer, be sure you have the envelope lined up on the right side to print the return address on it and not on the back up sheet. Extra thick envelopes may cause some problems. Also you should be able to print larger kraft envelopes using landscape mode, as long as the envelopes are not larger than the max paper size listed for the DeskJet. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 3 Sat Mar 06, 1993 E.BETZ [Bud] at 14:06 EST Hey Mike, Care to share the location of your treasure find. $349.00 is also the best price I've seen also!!! Their phone number is (513) 854-0550. ... Mike Squire ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 6 Sun Mar 07, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 02:45 EST Mike, My file is 26073, BAKSHEET.LZH, at just 2176 bytes. However, I browsed it to jog my memory: it is, in fact, a PageStream document detailing the fix. I don't think I did a readme, so: Message 179 details part of the fix I use: folding the flap of the non- standard envelope over the top of a regular 8.5x11 page, but I find it's best to center the sub-size envelope and adjust the PageStream/Calamus/word processor margins to accomodate the "indented" envelope. Centering tends to make the envelope load very evenly, keeping everything very "square" to the pickup rollers. In addition, non-standard envelopes tend to use non-standard papers, like the 6.25 by 9 inch sizes popular for the A6 size envelopes which are very nice for desktop published correspondence. To print perfectly on this sub-letter size stock, the same trick applies. I use just one sheet of letter size paper for both purposes (A6 envelope and 6.25 x 9 inch sheet printing), but of course, you can't fold the correspondence paper over without ruining it. The solution here: take a simple hole punch and make a couple of holes about .5 to 1 inch from the top of the 8.5 x 11 "dummy" page, one on either side of page center. On the back side of the page, affix Scotch tape over the holes. Then, simply align the small sheet to the top center of the dummy sheet, and press down on the taped holes. The small sheet will affix itself nicely to the larger letter size page, and following the formatting steps just like those used for the A6 envelopes, you'll get perfect results every time. The very small contact area of the Scotch tape has never damaged any specialty papers I've used. After printing, I just peel off the backing sheet with a little care. It's very convenient to use a program like PageStream or Calamus to print guidelines representing the envelope and paper width and height on the backing sheet to make alignment a "no-brainer." In fact, I just keep the file ready to use in PageStream, making the A6 envelope and 6.25 x 9 inch paper size guidelines into a master page. I'll format the envelope(s) and correspondence(s) using the guidelines, then turn off the master page to print via DeskJet. It's an incredibly fast way to work, especially if you like using a nice word processor, like Word Perfect or Le Redactuer to do the initial writing. Just draw out a column using the master page guides and dump in the text. For envelopes, a couple quick text columns and Cardfile sends work great. And this fails to mention the easy inclusion of graphics and other formatting bonuses (and COLOR with the 500C and 550C) available via a desktop publisher! -Richard Brown ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 7 Sun Mar 07, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 09:43 EST Richard, The hole punch idea is great. This morning, I picked up some "IJ Technologies Ink Jet Printer Paper", which is supposed to be "formulated to obtain maximum ink jet pring (t) quality" and features "92% optical brightness for vibrant colors and sharp images". The results look horrible. (At $.08 per sheet, yet!) It prints much blacker than the Hammermill paper, but not nearly as sharp. 10pt type is difficult to read. I tried the "wrong" side of the IJ paper, and it's a little better, but still not as good as the Hammermill. Has anyone else tried this stuff? I think that I will go back to using Hammermill Laser Print (24#) though as it seems to be just a little better for me. The thing is, 2 people can have the same type of paper and get 2 different results. It has been speculated that it may have something to do with the air. My suggestion is to just get some samples of papers and try them and pick the best results. There has been mention of a sample pack from somewhere. ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 11 Wed Mar 10, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 05:50 EST As alway DeskJets are paper picky. Each person seems to need to pick paper for themselves. Ink does make a difference, I generally use refilled cartriges so I will find one kind of paper best. I use Calamus SL, after playing with the raster settings (there are about a zillion possible) I can tell you different software makes a difference. Other suggestions for differences are differences in papers from one part of the country to another even though it might carry the same name. Differences in humidity and moisture content of the paper and differences in altitude the printer is being used at. In short, if the paper works use it. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 12 Wed Mar 10, 1993 DARLAH [RT~SYSOP] at 19:23 EST Joe: I agree with you. Never looked at it before (never had problems with my deskjet). Thanks for downloading JETEMU! I am not sure who said it before, but I don't know what I really use it for (not). 1) I welcome each and every constructive comment on the thing. 2) When the program was written it was done so for a very specific purpose: I use SPECTRE GCR a lot and used to do lots of printing. However I always had problems with the Mac Deskjet driver. It just seemed that data would get lost somewhere between the computer and the printer. I went through every effort to make the Mac print -to disk- so I could look at the printer data (maybe it was something that could be fixed). I just didn't find a way to do this. In the end I printed (on the Mac machine) to the serial port and captured the data on the other end with STalker. To analyze the data (which, as you very well know is huge) was quite impossible by looking at it. So I started writing a little program. Anyway, due to the limits of information in the deskjet manual about DATA COMPRESSION MODES 1 & 2 I never got this problem solved. Print files created by Pagestream (which I use almost exclusively) don't use compaction or any of the print head position commands, so they usually work fine. But files that do use these commands (or color) will produce strange things. Lately I have solved my printing problems by creating PostScript files on the Mac and Null-modeming them to a second (real ST). There I use the Ghostscript (postscript clone) interpreter (available here on GEnie) to print them and all the problems are gone. Luckily I was able to bring most Mac Fonts I use over to Ghostscript (as both are Type 1 fonts). 5) I guess I do use the program (JETEMU) sometimes to check if a printer driver does create faulty output or so. Also I use it as some sort of preview to save paper and ink. It would be nice as an ACC,...but a memory hog like that! I know it is VERY limited! Let me know what you need. 4) As said in the doc to JETEMU: This is an assembly program and I just didn't have time to solve the TOS error handler problem. Print files created by other deskjet printer drivers may cause problems if they use command formats I haven't seen, yet. Somebody Email me the file causing trouble I can look at it! 5) I overheard questions about a printer driver between Wordplus/Deskjet. I recently uploaded one here. It's called JETDRIVE.ARC and if it's not in the libraries, yet, it is probably still stuck at the Sysop's desk. Actually the package consists of two files: A printer driver (PRINTER.CFG) and a little ACC. I just had another look at PRINTALL (version 1.0), and it definately doesn't do hi rez stuff....it is in the planning for later upgrade according to the docs). I'll try your conversion idea. What's the best program to use for that process ??? =TOM= and Tom Z. ....... Well I've sort of tried that but... Now that I have your attention I'll explain my problem and perhaps another (more eloquent) solution might appear. I drew a nice picture using DEGAS of my sailboat. It is a full screen drawing so when it's printed at 75dpi it takes up a whole 8.5 x 11 page. However, when you print at 300dpi it reduces to an excellent size for a logo that I'm using on some letterhead. Now if I import it into Pagestream it comes in way too big and when I try and reduce the image due to the bitmap process it looks terrible and all the shading is destroyed. So far I've been unsuccesfull in reducing it so it prints the same size as the original does at 300dpi. I would LOVE to be able to have it in Pagestream. So what I've been doing is using DEGASHP.PRG to print the boat logo at 300dpi at the bottom of the paper, then using Pagestream to print over top the address and name logo. As you can imagine it's a bit of a pain in the butt. DEGASHP.PRG only prints one picture at a time and requires that you set all the parameters each time as well. JETPRINT seems to do the same thing. What I need is a solution to this reducing problem or a utility that will let me print multiple pages, position the image, and print at 300dpi all in the same breath. All on a DJ500 of course. There must be "something" out there that can do this ??? KENNE@SFRT......... Regarding message 51. Was that "Ask the Codeheads" in reference to my problem ?????? I used to have a problem with DJ carts that I refilled and stored, and also with color carts that I didn't use much. The problem was that they tended to clog up or dry out while in storage. Here's my solution: I take an inexpensive cellulose sponge and cut a 2" square piece, soak it in water and wring it out so it's just damp and place it in the zippy bag with my cartridge. It boosts the humidity in the bag enough that the carts don't dry out, at least not within my average storage time. Just make sure that the sponge doesn't contact the jets or the ink will bleed into it and create a mess. It's a CHEAP way to avoid having to mess around with the jets every time I need to use a stored cart. I got enough sponges to do my whole "inventory" at 3 for $1! Using MultiViewer Graphica which has a great DJ Printer Driver incorporated inside and prints out at 300/150/100/75 dpi.(300dpi printouts look marvelous.) First paste the Degas picture into an IMG file, by clipping the picture from the clipboard. Then I would edit my image to include whatever text I wanted over top of the Graphic, MVG can handle any GDos font. Next rotate the image until it upside down. Then I would insert the appropiate amount of white space using insert margins on the left side of the graphic until it appears in the center of the page. (300 dpi * 4 1/4 inches - 1/2 the size of the graphic - the left margin amount = amount of pixel to add to the margin) Now print out the the graphic using 300 dpi resolution using _NO_ offsets. Well this only does one at a time, so using CodeHead Utilities release 4's printer spooler and spoolman accessory freeze a copy of the printout and print out a copy any time you like. However, there are quite a few printer drivers available here in the library for most popular ST programs. I know for sure there is at least one for Word Writer. I don't know about the other programs you mentioned. Definitely do a search in the library under 'DESKJET' or 'DJ'. You'll find alot of programs that support the DeskJet, many of which were written specifically for it. Off the top of my head I can suggest: 2COLUMNS - Prints text files in columns using a small font to help save ink and paper. Very nice. PRINTALL - Graphics printing program that supports most popular file formats. Very nice output. And, if you plan on using PageStream or Calamus with your DJ, I _highly_ recommend purchasing the commercial program OutBurST!. I also would recommend INKSAVER.PRG (file #20682) which also goes in your AUTO folder and sends the DeskJet a control code to set it intially to draft mode which, in turn, saves you ink. Unless you're using a program that uses a GDOS printer driver, such as Calligrapher, or has one of its own, such as Word Perfect, you will probably have to design your own printer control code sequence. I found for some of my programs, such as MaxiFile, STeno, and LDW Power that I had to develop my own printer command strings. Many people that have Atari's and DJ's are running them without a hitch and without having to adapt or edit their driver, but everytime I try to print the program freezes. The printer's busy light does not go on, so that leads me to believe that it's not receiving any signals from the computer. I forgot to put the INF file there with the other two. When I rebooted, I constantly received the alert "FILE NOT FOUND" and then the system would reboot. I tried booting from a floppy but when I tried to run the ICD HD Utility program I got a TOS 35 error and then I'd get garbage directories. I finally had to reformat the boot partition. Unbelievably fast, amazingly WYSIWYG, and output at ANY point size with incredibe quality on the DJ. Programs like Atari Works and Word Flair 2 suddenly come into their own, though WF2 needs an upgrade to better support the FLEXIBILITY of Speedo (it still thinks of GDOS in an old fashioned way- Atari Works uses Speedo perfectly). With Speedo GDOS, the ancient GDOS curse is banished forever! One can only hope the remaining software developers shake clear the cobwebs, take notice, and support this standard, which, by the way, equates to Adobe Type Manager on the Mac and PC platforms - completely. Having played with it, I can say that with Speedo, programs like Atari Works (which has a nice, Microsoft Word-esque feel in its WP mode) become serious performers with an output quality that truly matches PageStream for crispness and quality. The difference is, Speedo is MUCH faster than PageStream in getting ink onto paper. (Sure, PgS is infinitely more powerful, but sometimes you don't need all that power). To sum up: Speedo is a DeskJet owner's _destiny_. So, hound your dealers! If Falcons are 2 weeks (cross your fingers) away... Add OutburST and it _FLIES_, even with a lowly ol' ST... I also owe WordFlair an apology. Having only played a few minutes with WF2/Speedo, I didn't notice the editable font size selection line (only the few sizes listed above). To wit, WordFlair 2 needs NO upgrade to really take advantage of Speedo and the DTP quality output it represents. First recommended purchase: Hammermill Pen Plotter Paper for black ink Deskjet printing. Very nice, zero bleed, crisp BLACK characters. Even the "overspray" look sometimes associated with cheaper papers is tamed (gone). This paper falls between LaserEdge HR-10 and LaserEdge Lite in weight, but shares a similar DeskJet print quality. For those not familiar with LaserEdge, Hammermill Pen Plotter is also a little lighter than Xerox 4200 DP or Hammermill long grain Laser paper. Get some and enjoy! BTW- I do have the Hammermill list of wholesale "stock house" paper merchants for the U.S. AND Canada, and will upload the whole thing as a CardFile 3 database as well as a couple other forms sometime soon. Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 147 Tue May 18, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 19:54 EDT Mr. Yurick, The LaserEdge line consists of four primary papers: LaserEdge Lite: a very delicate (and slippery!) coated stock LaserEdge HR-10: a 'single weight' coated stock LaserEdge HR-20: a 'double weight' coated stock all of the above have reasonable similar color reproduction, reasonably color rich, very stable, with good definition. the fourth paper: LaserEdge IJ-30 yields EXTREME COLOR SATURATION. It is a FAR cry from the HR products in its color reproduction. You might have to actually tone down the color sent to the printer. I believe Calamus SL has all the functions needed for this as part of its driver system, but in PageStream, at least for the Atari, you need to adjust the graphic in a third party program. I find PhotoShop via Mac emulation a good choice. IJ-30 stands alone in maximizing color saturation. The first time I tried it, I thought something went WRONG (?!) due to shocking change from ALL other papers. If you need to be eye popping, use IJ-30, otherwise, I'd recommend the HR-20 as a robust paper for color comps. It NEVER suffers from typical soak in or warpage problems found with other stocks. --Richard Brown ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 148 Sat May 22, 1993 T.YURICK [T.YURICK] at 11:51 EDT Richard Brown... A bit of strangeness to discuss things liked on _other_ platforms (like color scanners on the still hard to tolerate IBM) here in the ST RT's. I wonder if _Atari_ is listening. Things in 680x0 land aren't so happy in general: General Motors, Boeing Co., Aetna Life and Casualty, and Westinghouse are phasing out their Macintosh's (Computer Reseller News, May 10, pg. 1) -- not a small blow to the Mac, you see. When Fortune 500 companies start something... to quote the article, "The decisions point to an ominous trend for Apple..." Guess what big blue whale landed on their corporate beaches with Bill Gates leading the way? It seems the bitter winds we Atarians in 680x0 land face have fanned out further than we thought. I only wish I could tolerate the Microsoft/IBM stuff more than I do. Maybe the DEC Alpha machines or multiprocessing Pentium machines will make me want to actually purchase a system to go with my TT, Megas, and ST's. (The IBM monstrosities I currently use for work weigh in from $32,000 to $40,000+ -- and they call these PERSONAL computers!) I have seen other MegaSTe users report problems with printing to the DJ500C, but they were related to color saturation and color matching, so I think this particular problem is unique to my machine. I wonder if the PowerPC chip will have any effect on the Motorola market? I'd like to see Atari come out with a 60 Mhz PowerPC machine... brings back memories of BYTE cover stories and "Power without the price." The Fortune 500 are probably reaching the same conclusion I did, I couldn't from a business standpoint, justify the costs associated with the MAC. The DeskJet is a near equal to the Laser which has a special enhanced print (making it equalivalent to about 360 dpi). Most people looking at the output will think it is laser output. In some cases the only two ways I know to tell them apart is to look for the little waves in the paper caused by the water based ink or to wet the image to see if it reacts. The output of a DeskJet is very dependent on the paper used. You will need to do a little experimentation to see what works best for you in your part of the country. You will need to remember the ink is not perfect and if it gets wet it will run (the standard ink is less of a problem and as the ink ages over several weeks it becomes less of a problem.) In addition if you buy the right model you can have color output. The 550 has a black cartridge built in, in addition to the color. The output is not perfect, but most users seem happy with the output. One last point in favor of the DeskJet. The finished product from a Laser has a slight oil film left on it. This film makes writing on the paper a little difficult using some pens, like fountain pens. The DeskJet does not have this problem. On the down side the DeskJet/Atari combo do not seem to recognize each other except when the printer is on before the computer is booted. This can be fixed with a little 25 cent fix to the printer cable. If you get a DeskJet just ask and if you send me self addressed envelope I will send instructions and the needed part at no charge. Best of luck >> Joe M << ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 168 Thu Aug 12, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 22:33 EDT The recognition problem that Joe mentioned can also be worked around by using one of the "Deskjet Revive"-type programs in the library. I've never bothered with the printer cable fix, I just run one of these programs to wake up the Atari so it knows the printer is connected. Gordon ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 169 Fri Aug 13, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 03:09 EDT R.WATSON15: The offset problem you mention may be due to DIP switch setting problems for graphic mode. I had an identical problem with a Bubble Jet. M.STEFANI: Regarding the DJ vs. SLM: I have a DJ500C, a BJ10e, a NEC Silentwriter, an AST Turbo Laser, a NewGen, and a while back, I had a PostScript imagesetter at 3,000 dpi. Visually, I'd say most people would compare the outputs in this order: PRINTER JUDGING MODE Imagesetter DTP text PostScript (PS) laser. NewGen DTP text PS laser. AST DTP text PS laser. Silentwriter DTP text PS laser. (BJ10e might beat this.) The Atari SLM might go here (Non-PS laser) BJ10e DTP text jet (graphics mode) DJ500C DTP text jet (graphics mode) Relative to the ink jets, although I find the Bubble Jet to be the only ink sprayer that will truly fool a laser printer owner, as in, with a magnifying glass, I find myself using the Deskjet for the bulk of my more common printing needs, especially given that the Deskjet is so well supported on the Atari platform. Also, with the 500C I have a tool to produce very fine color mockups of 4-color work that I do for some magazines. J.MEEHAN is right, though: papers are everything. If you're looking for "laser" quality on the Deskjet, try Schoeller's LaserEdge papers, which come in several weights and styles (the "HR" and "IJ" lines in particular) which are marketed, I believe, as InkJet Ultra (Item # JU1000) and InkJet Color (Item # CJ1001) by Paper Direct (toll free at 1-800-272-7337). The InkJet Color paper should not be used with the 550C, as the ink formulation in the black cartridge is radically different than the color cartridge. For the 550, use InkJet Ultra. If you want to try for "camera ready" laser quality from the Bubble Jet, seek out Strathmore Legacy Pen Plotter Paper, Product No. 01-075. I have used it in 20% to 100% humidity climates from 50 to 100 degrees with identical results. The hassle is - you have to wait about 30 seconds per page in drying time after ejection: the ink does NOT soak into the page. The resulting lack of capillary diffusion keeps the 360 dpi quality intact. Although it stays wet a while, the results are extraordinary - often clearly superior to the NEC Silentwriter laser to many an eye. However, if you are not needing "camera ready" work (most business or personal printing situations do not require it), you may find the extremely well supported DeskJet series a completely satisfying solution. With the advent of Speedo GDOS, the DeskJet has helped Atari come into its own at last, finally duplicating the once enviable output of the Mac or IBM with Adobe Type Manager. Speedo has given a new life to fine packages like WordFlair and GEMvelope while contributing to the potent capabilities of Atari Works and other programs. Even the old-old Degas can use Speedo fonts! Finally, of interest to DJ users, to plug a download I checked out recently, GEnie file 23862, IDEALIST.LZH uploaded by GRMEYER, is totally sensational as a DeskJet (also Laserjet, Bubble Jet and virtually all other printers, too) text file printing utility as both a PRG and ACC. I use the ACC which provides full background text file printing. It is like a very slick, much better implementation of what 2COLUMNS.PRG wants to be. Although intended more for archiving and review purposes, it is rapidly proving itself indispensible to my DeskJet 500C. --Richard Brown ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 170 Fri Aug 13, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 10:57 EDT R.BROWN: Thanks for your comments about DJ vs SLM and other printers you're familiar with. The file, DJ500CG.PRT, that you have is designed to be used in conjunction with Step Ahead Software's "Tracker/ST" mailing list management product. There is also a desk accessory in our library called JETSET.ARC (Library file #20794), I believe. It kind of does what you want, but consumes quite a bit of memory, too. Also, you may want to check out HPDESK2E.LZH (file #20524) - it's a German import, but works fairly well. For my own usage, I have found it best to develop strings that will work with the programs that I use and then incorporate those strings in the programs themselves rather than look for a printer setup utility. These programs include: MaxiFile, EdHak, STeno, and Word Perfect. If you have one of these programs, I'd be happy to e-mail you the files that I'm using to setup the DeskJet although I own a DeskJet 500, not a 500C like you so you'd have to customize them further. I also have a Prestige Elite cartridge so you'd want to remove those codes. If you happen to own CodeHead Software's "Look It", I believe that someone posted a whole series of .CFG files to the library (DJLOOKIT.LZH - file #17783) that allow you to load the file of your choice into "Look It" and then using the proper .CFG file for "Look It's" printer definition print out the file, but it works best with CodeHead's "HotWire" desktop replacement program which you may not have. Hope this helps answer your question. Also, if you haven't already, you might want to download INKSAVER.ARC (file #20682) (always sets your DJ to "draft" mode when you boot up), DJET_SET.LZH (file #18889) ("initializes" your DJ if you failed to turn it on before booting your ST), HP_HIREZ.LZH (file #20430) (Alt-Help Screen Dump driver for ST high resolution users only), and/or PRTORSAVE.ARC (file # 15239) (Alt-Help Screen Dump driver for ST medium resolution users only). ... I am using an Canon BJ-300 at the moment. Just plug it into the printer port. Any cable which works with a IBM clone will work with an Atari. If you are using GDOS, you can find the proper printer driver for the BubbleJet in the FontGDOS file here in the ST library. The newer (and MUCH better) SpeedoGDOS (with scalable fonts) is available from various dealers - I disremember the price. The new AtariWorks package (integrated Word Processor, Data Base and Spread Sheet) is available from various dealers for a MSRP of less than $120. This includes SpeedoGDOS with various printer drivers (including the BubbleJet) and 14 fonts. The print quality on an BubbleJet is outstanding! As for hard drives, any SCSI drive (such as used with MACs) can be connected to an Atari with the addition of a Host Adaptor. I suggest the ICD Link which comes with the necessary software (excellent, by the way) for a MSRP of $119.95. I have seen it advertised for under $100 from various Atari dealers. For full information, check the ICD RoundTable here on GEnie, page 1220. If, by v1.0, you are referring to the TOS version, I highly recommend that you upgrade to at least TOS 1.04. TOS 1.04 ROMs are available from various dealers for usually less than $60. If you really want the latest for your 1040ST, you can get the TEC board from CodeHead Technology for a MSRP of $139 - > $155 (depending on installation type) which includes TOS 2.06 with the new NewDesk desktop. Connecting things to your ST doesn't have to be expensive. There are some excellent, reasonably priced products available.
