What exactly is the difference between the Plus and 500, besides the 500 having more fonts? The printer I'm buying comes with the Times Roman cartridge, and I think two ink carts. The local OfficeMax office supple store (seems related to Office Town and Office Depot) has the high capacity carts for $26 each, and the refills as well. I figure it's worth it to just get the HC's. I'll also check at SAM's as someone mentioned before. BTW, does anyone know how much Outburst costs, and where I can buy it? Thanks! Since I use a hypo and bottle of ink, all I'm out is a few cc's of ink if it doesn't work. If I were using the $14.00 refill kit, which only works twice, I might be a bit upset. Just to clarify something posted earlier: The ink that most people seem to prefer is Sheaffer's Skrip (not 'script'). This might be why it's a little hard to find a bottle of 'script'. :) They've recently changed their packaging and the new boxes are red, and say "Sheaffer" more prominently than "Skrip"...if they even say the latter at all. At the bottom of your FW screen you can choose an extended character with the mouse. In the driver you can substitute a string of code for one of these characters. I substituted the DJ code for the Times font, for instance, for one of these characters. So to change to Times of a partucular size, I click on that character and the code goes to the printer to make it print in the desired font and size. Have I lost you? If you want to give this a try and get stuck, I will try to help you further. I have a classic DJ with a Times cart, so I don't know if my driver would do you any good. It works great, except for one minor annoyance: Print darkness varies greatly. I've done everything the manual suggested -- from removing and cleaning the print cartridge and the contacts, to using the Prime key, etc. No change. There are some lines missing, and some lines are darker than others. When I did some printing using the internal fonts, the main missing lines (one very noticable, a few above it not as noticable) were almost halfway down the character (10 point Times Roman). The top half of the character was lighter than it should, with those lines showing, the next third down was good and dark, and the very bottom of the characters were light again. (Time has passed) It's now much later, and I tried printing an envelope. It printed perfectly. I changed to some other paper. The first stuff I was using was some Hammermill recycled paper for lasers and copiers. Now I'm using Xerox 4200 DP paper, which is considerably better. It's still not perfect, as there's a little streaking in areas that have lots of black. What is the best paper you've found? Also, what is a good brand of colored paper, like pastels, bright colors, and good stuff for resume printing? The cartridge in it is almost new. It's a high capacity cart too. I might just return the new HC cart I just bought. Hmmm... Any help would be very much appreciated. BTW, without OutBurST, printouts from PageStream are pretty doggone fast, at least compared to my Panasonic 1124! My usual paper is Hammermill Laser paper, 500 sheets for about $6.00. I've recently begun using Southworth Watermark Electronic Paper, 25% cotton. Printouts are noticeably clearer, but it is quite a bit more expensive. Printing with PageStream with OutBurST is about 4 times faster than without it (guesstimate really). If you'd like to see for yourself, download the demo from the library here. If you use PageStream much at all, you'll definitely want to buy OutBurST! - Mick ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 17 Wed Dec 02, 1992 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 05:49 EDT Rob, Congratulations. If you are still getting streaks (white lines) in your printouts it is most likely a bad cartridge. HP will replace it for you. Paper is a very personal thing. What works best for me in Columbus, Ohio may not work for you at all. It may have something to do with the local weather and altitude; maybe it's the moon. The best thing to do is find someplace that will let you try a page or two of all the promising paper as samples. You should expect some banding in large areas of black or smooth raster areas. You should not have distinctive white bands. White bands can be a software problem a cartridge problem or a printer problem. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 18 Wed Dec 02, 1992 SFRT-ASST [Kenne@SFRT] at 11:48 EST Off the top of my head I would guess thta the differences are based on temperatue, altitude, and relative humidity. < G> ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 19 Wed Dec 02, 1992 D.SEBERG [IceBerg] at 23:07 EST Rob, Joe is right, humidity and altitude DOES make a difference in the quality of printout. >IF< you live in an area with mid to high humidity AND the elevation is +/- 1000 feet, then try the following paper choices: Gilbert Neu-Tech 25% cotton 24lb. To my chagrin, after it was (mostly) complete, I discovered that a DeskJet 500 driver covered most of what I wanted to accomplish. I'm not sure of the file, but it is available here on GENIE. It uses the built-in courier for normal text, but when you choose "proportional," it uses the built-in CG Times. To the best of my knowledge, another complete driver is needed to have access to the built-in Letter Gothic typestyle. I think it is a simple case of re- configuring the above-mentioned DJ500 driver. (I just checked, and it is. I have a LET_GOTH.CFG in my printer folder, although I rarely use it. I _may_ have devised it myself, I dunno - no name is in the file. Check GENIE for the DJ500 drivers, and if you can't find one for Letter Gothic, let me know, and I'll upload it. From the way that 1st Word+ works, I don't think you can have Courier, Times, and Letter Gothic all in the same driver.) A.VALENT: The book "Deskjet Unlimited" gives a good description. On GIF's, especially 752x480 NTSC overscan grabs, the picture size can get a bit obtrusive, burning a lot of ink even at 300 dpi. (Remember, it's nearly 80 cents a page just in ink for color printing on the 500C!) I've used Jetlabel 1.1 available here on GEnie, but it doesn't align the addresses with all the labels and ruins half the page. I've tried the Jetlabel Elite demo which seems to work pretty well and I am considering sending off $25 to Mike Young for his working version but I need a labeler right away, and since I'm lucky enough to have a good inexpensive local Atari dealer who can get things quickly, I'm still considering other programs such as: The Deskjet Utilities Pak: Has anyone here used this program for mailing lists? My question is, of the three, is there any significant difference in the printers besides the obvious (500=black, 500C=black+color but requires swaping carts, 550C=black+color but no swaping) difference? The main reason I ask is Sears has the DJ500 for about $489 and the DJ500C on sale for $549.00, and I value the BBS users' opinions! The mixing, from what I've heard, causes black to actually look a little muddy-green. I've seen the self-running demo printouts from the 550C and it looked really nice, but it was quite slow compared to black printing. Could have something to do with the software the demo was using, though I would guess that any color printing is slower than plain black. I wrote the PageStream macros for Avery 5160, 5164, and 5196 labels, available here on GEnie as FREEware. For those owning PageStream who want labeling power that exceeds any expectation in terms of quality and versatility that you may have, please check them out! Here is a sample of the power of these macros, taken from the included README file that comes in the _tiny_ download (something like 2-3K as an LZH): AVERY 5160 Labels and PageStream Macro Magic WITH THIS MACRO SET YOU CAN: * make 30 identical labels with infinite text & graphics. * make 15 identical labels as above, half the page, from top. * make 10 identical labels as above, vertically from the top. * make 3 identical labels as above, horizontally, from left. * make any combination of unique or identical labels (2 of this, 4 of that, 7 of these, 1 of those, etc.) * erase one label and replace it with its north, south, east, or west neighbor with ease (text, graphics, or both). * add a graphic element to any or all of the labels on a page. * make a master label pre-centered for four lines of 12 point text with 1 point leading (like a return address label). * make use of Cardfile for instant address entry (reduce finger wear: type it ONCE, use FILTERS, etc.). Actually, the true utility is virtually infinite and limited only by your ingenuity. The term "identical" is sort of a misnomer, as it is easy to have 30 different address labels using Cardfile as your input device. The point is, you could vary the style, graphics, etc. to the labels, singly or multiply, maintaining perfect positioning all the while, with a WYSIWYG preview... and on and on... I have found as far as for the best paper to use with the DJ is a cotton base paper of 24lb. Capitol bond,25% cotton, 24lb works very well and is available at some of the COSTCO stores. The best results that I have had is when using Southworth Resumes 100% cotton, white, 24lb. I buy this paper at Office Depot for around $4.30 for a 100 sheets. PAPER Direct has a InkJet cotton paper, 25% cotton, white, 28lb. for 11.95 for 100 sheets. I might have to give this a try. The InkJet Ultra they sell seems to bleed a little. ...... Their papers: HR-10 (medium weight) and HR-20 (heavy weight) are specially coated, and designed especially for laser _and_ inkjet printers. I've worked with the developer of these papers (and seen awesome things from the 'drawing' board), and comparing these papers with literally dozens of others, have found HR-10 and 20 hands down _best_, optimizing all aspects of DeskJet printing. Another Schoeller paper, IJ-30, is optimized for the Deskjet 500C and 550C, as the color cartridge's "inks" are not really inks, but moreso like dyes, and need a different coating for optimized contrast and saturation on color printing. ** IJ-30 IS NOT FOR BLACK INK DESKJET PRINTING (if you want to see something _bad_, try it) ** IJ-30 is absolutely eye-popping in the way it enhances color intensity out of the 500C. It is _so_ dramatically different from _any_ other paper that you have to tweek the color levels of the TIF or whatever file you happen to be printing. Odd to think of 'too _much_ color' relative to DJ output. It's amazing stuff. Price is an object, however. Expect to pay more than $.10 a _sheet_. For this reason, LaserEdge papers come in 250 sheet quantity. I believe Paper Direct carries these papers, but under another brand name. They indicate "OK for Inkjet" (but they also say this for other papers they carry). -Richard Brown ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 123 Tue Jan 26, 1993 J.STEINGROBE at 00:36 EST To the people who helped me with my DJ problem Thanks. Kenne@SFRT A form feed is always a full sheet unless you can tell your printer the sheet size is less than standard. The DeskJet lets you set only a few sizes. Even if you could set the page size to an short page I would guess a FF would eject the page and clear the printer. What I suggest is one of two things. First you could use a DA text editor like EdHak. Just use return to go down the page to the line you want and send the result to the printer. You may need to add some kind of marker at that point; a "." maybe. Just make sure your text editor does not send a FF every time it prints Second you could use a DA like MaxiFile where you can define a list of printer codes and send them at you need them. You could use " 027 038 108 ### 069 ". It will set the top margin where ### is the number of lines you need. Since I am new to the DeskJet, I have some questions that I'm hoping someone can answer: 1) The store at which I wish to buy also carries the 500C for approximately $100 more. Should I consider purchasing that instead even though I'm not into graphics and have no present requirement for color? Does HP offer any special accessories for the DJ 500 that I should consider purchasing up front (e.g., larger printer buffer)? Also, I hear that there is a model 550? The 500C is discontinued I believe! Plus I thing it can not print true black.. Sort of a dark grey!! I also think it was much slower than the regular 500 when printing.. And I think that you have to change inkcarts and do several passes to get color output.... The 550C is a big improvement with most of those limitations gone.. And it uses 2 ink carts instead of one.. The color -vs- regular DeskJet I answered with: There are only a few programs which support color printing.. Calumus and Page Stream are a couple.. I'm sure there a a couple more.. And do I need color output?? I will buy one for sure when there are more programs that utilize it's color features.. The real nice thing about the 550 and the 550C is the envelope basket.. But that won't make me run out and buy a new one.. I have no trouble feeding them one by one into the printer.. It is 1,000% better than feeding envelopes into a dot matrix.. :)... Software: I would recommend "JETON".. An small acc/prg to turn your DJ on after you have booted up, in case you forgot... Chet Walter's label program is a must, if you want to print labels.. And GEMvelope if a must have if you want to print envelops, and CardFile if you want to send the address information directly GEMvelope.. Paper: I found that for drafts, the cheapest paper you can find does well.. I use something called 'COPYPLUS', from Staples.. 500 sheets of $2.79.. I tried "FIRST CHOICE from Weyhauser that every one else seems to use, but I found that regular resume paper works best for me.. I think you kind of have to experiment here.. I only use the 'ggod' stuff for final printing amd the important stuff... Get Paper Directs sampler.. It's $19, but that is refundable on your first order, and you will have fun playing with the 100 or so assorted papers they send you.. Just write down what they are as you use them.. You will be able to see what paper looks best when finished.. Here is the address and phone number.. PAPER DIRECT 205 CHUBB AVE. LYNDHURST, NJ 07071-0618 1-800-272-7377 Have your credit card handy.. :) OutburST will speed up printing.. But you can't use a print spooler like the one in the Codeheads Utility disk.. So it's a trade off.. Frank P. author of OutburST was suppose to come out with new version with a built in spooler.. Anyone seen it?? I thought it was due out a couple of months ago?? Scott Sanders of SDS I believe, has closed up shop and left the ST market.. The only thing I use his program for is printing those cheesy, plain disk labels.... :) Also if you are like me and have a lot of programs, older ones that do not support the DJ.. Buy an Epson emulator cart for about $65.. So you can print all those files, and calendars, and spreadsheets you used to on the 9-pin.... :) Memory: I never found the need for extra memory I use a 150k spooler and it works well and the DJ is pretty fast.. I tried OutburST and noticed a slight increase in speed over the spooler.. But I do a lot of printing and I need the spooler.. You will find that HP memory is quite expensive, to say in the least.... If your computer is cramped for memory. it would probably be better to upgrade to 4 megs.. The DJ is not like an Atari laser, or some of the other lasers on the market.. You don't need a whole lot of memory for it to print... Hope some of this helps you.. Wow this baby got long, didn't it?? <-:}Ted{:-> Sunday, February 21, 1993 - 9:26:12 pm ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 164 Mon Feb 22, 1993 DENNYA [Denny Atkin] at 11:05 EST Has anyone ever tried hooking computers to both ports of a DeskJet? IE: An ST on the parallel port and a PC or Amiga on the serial port? ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 165 Mon Feb 22, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 19:17 EST I own the DeskJet 500C, which is "near true color" in its ability, using yellow, mageneta, and cyan colors in various dithered combinations to create "near true color" printing of anything from simple color tones to PMS colors to 24 bit color imagery. The 550C, annoyingly introduced not 4 months after I purchased the 500C, is a true 4-color process, featuring a second cartridge cradle so that, side by side, you have the CMY cart and the "K", or black cart. CMYK is for genuine "true color" work. Where the 500C completely lacks black with the color cart, having instead a "dark green", the 550C, with the black cart, obviously will add black to the color dithering, making for superior color imagery as compared to the "outdated" 500C. There are new drivers available for the 550 for both PageStream and Calamus. This is not to say the DeskJet 500C won't print black. It does, simply by switching carts from color to black ink. That's called black mode, not unlike the DJ500. Software wise, for color image printing, or black image, for that matter, you can't go wrong with PageStream (my personal favorite), or Calamus (very, very powerful, but somewhat cryptic and without PostScript support at this time). Both, however, will do great things on the DeskJet, either in color or black and white. I have uploaded to GEnie several DeskJet macros for PageStream for Avery label making: #'s 5160, 5162, 5196. 5160 and 5162 labels are good for addressing with Cardfile (with graphics if you want), and the 5196 is for 3.5 inch floppy labels. The macros are very versatile for label production, but you'll need PageStream to use them. For speeding up your printing DEFINITELY get OutburST! Even its little brother, FPPRNT.PRG, perhaps still here on GEnie, makes life better (for non- TT Ataris). There is soon to be a TT version of Outburst. My TT really needs it: my STe is faster than my TT for the DJ with FPPRNT!!!! Paper wise, there is one best paper company, specifically manufacturing COATED papers for use in laser OR DESKJET printers. I know the developer of the emulsion technology personally, but the papers are from Schoeller Technical Papers, and they are LaserEdge Lite, LaserEdge HR-10, and the heavyweight LaserEdge HR-20. For dramatically, and I mean DRAMATICALLY increased color saturation, you'll want to try LaserEdge IJ-30. The difference with IJ-30 is unbelievable to the point that the color and saturation levels of the original source pictures must be adjusted for optimum, awesome results. Now, you may find Schoeller papers hard to find, but, rumor has it that Paper Direct, the king of cool paper companies, offers HR-20 under the name "Inkjet Ultra" product number JU1000, and the super saturated IJ-30 under the name "Inkjet Color" product number CJ1001. Call Paper Direct to order at: 1-800-272- 7337. Paper Direct has a fabulous catalogue with about a billion products (+/- ). Get one! Also, for paper, HP makes it own, but only for COLOR mode called HP51630Y CX JetSeries CutSheet Paper. This paper is yellowed to compensate for CMY's lack of blacks. (I recommend the LaserEdge). For specialty papers, certain office supply stores and stationers will carry the diverse "The Paper Company" line of papers. Other companies also offer similar stuff, but The Paper Company is the best that I've come across. Of note, their nice A6 envelopes and matching 6 1/4 x 9 inch note paper make for great personal stationary. I happen to have uploaded to GEnie a PageStream template for both non standard paper and envelopes that makes using this stuff a breeze, perfect every time. Once again, this has a PageStream bent. Calamus, and I'd bet Calligrapher could do just fine with this. Caveat: avoid the nice Oriental papers: they are handmade and too porous, bleeding badly with inkjet printing. These papers are really for laser printing. Paper Direct ** will sell direct and features many 205 Chubb Ave. products similar/identical/acquired Lyndhurst, NJ 07071 to/from The Paper Company 800-272-7377 The Paper Company ** does not sell direct, only through 731 South Fidalgo Street dealers, but they are very nice Seattle, WA 98108 people and may direct you to the 206-762-9128 dealer nearest your location. ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 166 Mon Feb 22, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 19:33 EST Solid post Russ. I have not had enough guts to try it myself :-) Ron @ Atari Explorer Magazine ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 168 Mon Feb 22, 1993 M.OSTRANDER1 [Mike O] at 21:14 EST Mike Squire, Here's my opinions, to add to the others you're receiving. I'm using a DeskJet500 with my MEGA4 and ancient TOS 1.02. 1) I've had a ("classic") Deskjet, a Deskjet Plus, and now this DJ500. If I were buying a new DJ at this time, I'd pick the 550C, with the 500 as a second choice. I wouldn't bother with the 500C, even at just $100 over the plain 500. Why the 550C? Not because I _need_ color output, but just because it would be nifty to print the occasional color flyer from PageStream. I've never felt any need for hardware add-ons (more memory, cartridges) for any of my DJs. Closely related to a hardware add-on is the diode modification to the printer cable. It's relatively easy and it's a whole lot more convenient than the utilities that "reawaken" DeskJets. More than once, I've simply turned off the power switch on my DJ to interrupt a printout in progress; flip the power switch back on and no need to call up a utility to recognize that the DJ is back online. 2) Buy OutBurST! Period. It works great (noticeable! speedup with any graphics output) with Calligrapher3, PageStream, etc. The built-in spooler in version 3.0 is only for ASCII (non-graphics) output using the printer's own fonts. Other recommended programs: GEMvelope (for the obvious) & HP-5260 for Avery address labels. 3) Paper ... very subjective. Get in touch with PaperDirect, as already suggested. I use Weyerhauser First Choice for everyday first-class printing and Ink Jet Ultra for the occasional page that must be PERFECT. Anything that's handy is good enough for my drafts and temporary printouts. Try a variety of papers and pick out whatever esthetically pleases you. Enjoy your DeskJet, whichever one you choose! - Mike ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 169 Mon Feb 22, 1993 S.LAPHAM1 [Scott L.] at 22:17 EST I've seen the 500C at $529.00 everyday ($449.77 on sale) and the 550C at $699.00 everyday ($639.77 on sale) at MicroCenter here in Fairfax, Virginia. (703-204-8400 for info) Cheers. Scott L. ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 170 Mon Feb 22, 1993 S.LAPHAM1 [Scott L.] at 22:37 EST A previous post suggested buying the HP Epson Emulation cartridge for the HP DeskJet printers. Fine suggestion, EXCEPT for any of them that end with a "C". THEY WILL NOT WORK! It will work on a DeskJet, DeskJet+ and DeskJet 500 but NOT with a 500C or 550C. It's in the manual. Cheers. Scott L. ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 171 Tue Feb 23, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 05:59 EST Memory note: The DeskJet does not need additional memory like a laser may. The DeskJet forms it's image line by line as it is received. lasers however form a full page image in their memory so they have a much greater need for their own memory. The Atari laser used the computer memory to form an image so it does not need it's own memory. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 172 Tue Mar 02, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 19:11 EST I've been doing some casual hacking, and have a had a modicum of success in reverse engineering the printer definition files for Print Master. This may mean that a honest-to-gosh DJ driver is possible, tho it's a bit early to say for sure. Since I don't use PM that much, it's not a huge need on my part. However, if there is some interest, I might be convinced to investigate this further. Gordon ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 173 Wed Mar 03, 1993 T.EVANS21 [] at 07:11 EST Gordon, Hey! I purchased a Deskjet 500 on Sunday for $349.99 which is the best price I could find and a ream of Hammermill LaserCopy which has worked out real well so far. I am in the process now of converting my software over from the Epson FX printer to the Deskjet with most of it done except for LDW Power which is going to take a little time since each worksheet will need to be modified. I have another question, though. The Deskjet manual states that it will only print on envelopes that have the dimensions of 9 1/2" by 4 1/8" - is this true in actual practice or are they only referring to the size that the built-in envelope feeder was designed for? ... PACMan ------------ Category 4, Topic 9 Message 177 Thu Mar 04, 1993 R.SNYDER6 [Roger] at 18:06 EST Mike, I have run a few different sized envelopes through my DJ500 with little trouble. They have to be big enough that the drive wheels will catch them, (envelopes than are not are rare anyway). You do have to check sometimes that they fed straight. The only time I've had some trouble is feeding envelopes made from heavier/thicker paper--i.e. a 70# felt finish. They tend to feed crooked. --Roger ------------
