I've been reading this topic since I joined GEnie. To my knowlege it has only been used for miscellaneous Calamus messages. Since I am not rich, have moved to a new state and started a new job my funds are limited. What should I do, drop this topic??? Then I'd miss out on all of the non-specific Calamus help messages. I don't mind non-Calamus messages. It's just that I hadn't been on-line in a week or so. And since I use Aladdin, it automaticly grabs the messages in the topics that I specify. This being one of them. Imagine my surprise when I got to read a bunch of those other messages. Thanks for letting me air my grips. Nathan, will DMC be releasing a new Template to go along with the newly upgraded Calamus SL? Also, will you be releasing an updated index section for the docs? I just looked up something and since a few sections have been replaced/added to, the index refered me to the wrong section. An example would be Tabs. The index refers the user to section 5.6.3.1. But the scetion on Tabs is now at 5.6.5. I know that it was most likly stated in the read me file, but after a few upgrades, read me files become a whole new binder. Glenn... ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 2 Sat Oct 09, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 09:03 EDT Glenn, it is not really appropriate to redo the index at this time since all the changes occur in the reorganized TEXT chapter. As you guessed, this info is covered in the README and, as usual, you have Help Line messages that included the new chapter references. As for a new template, the old one should still be matched to your macro set. If something is missing, let me know and I will update the CKT and put it up in the library. For starters: I recently purchased a CD with a number of TIFF textures for 3D mapping and backgrounds. They are indeed in DOS format and read just fine on an IBM type machine. On my Atari however, they read as two files, identical names, one containing the large info for the image, the second a 727byre file that i can only assume might some type of header info. The IBM does not see these files as two files. I only read one image. Second: if i copy said image on an IBM from the CD to a disk, I can then use it on the Atari. Does anyone have any clue what might be going on and have any ideas of a way to fix the problem? My primary use will be Calamus SL and assorted graphic oriented utilities. I _love_ my MoniTerm monitor and have become quite spoiled not having to scroll around with a small window and all. I must also profess meager knowledge of VGA or Multisync monitors. SO. . . what I'm looking for is your advice and experience with monitors for the TT. I would like to keep things manageable in terms of cost, but I'm not on a shoestring either. Okay -- make me smart. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 17 Sun Nov 21, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 21:43 EST Dave, the CyRel card with a non-interlaced SVGA monitor from 15 to 21 inches... depending on your budget. My primary use will < > be Calamus SL and assorted graphic < If you liked your Monoterm, take a look at the Atari TTM194. Many of them were made by Monoterm. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 20 Mon Nov 22, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 10:35 EST The TM194 and TM195 came from either Moniterm or Phillips. If you wish to stay with a 19" monochrome, either go that route or figure out how to convert your Viking for use with the TT. If it is color you are now after, you definitely want a SVGA multi- frequency monitor from whomever. Personally we own a 17" MAG and we love it but there is an amazing variety of quality monitors available. When you get up to 17", 19" or even 21" the price rises dramatically. You'll also need to decide which graphics card fits your needs. If you want the best, check out the Cybercube topic right here in Cat 16. It is a hi-end quality card backed by excellent support from Cybercube Research Limited. You can get cards for less, even 24 bit cards. Again, personally, we love our Cybercube card, for the speed and quality and ease of use of the software/hardware combination. 1ST Class! Regardless, Calamus SL works on everyones cards although please stay away from 15/16 bit cards as Calamus SL runs in 1,4, 8, 24/ 32 bit only. We will be happy to help you out whatever your choice. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 21 Mon Nov 22, 1993 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 18:55 EST Dave, Congratulations on the new TT. SL should really fly for you now. :>) As far as a monitor goes, I would suggest a TTM195 for your primary monitor. Eventhough it's a B/W monitor it will give you the large screen that you're use to and you'll be able to use the B&W graphic programs such as Touchup, Avant Vector, screen. If you want color you probably should get a card and multi scanning monitor. I originally had a PCT 1426 Atari and I found it to be not very good for DTP applications (mainly size & resolution). For any serious DTP work 17" and up is the way to go. I have a 17" MAG and a Cyrel Card and that combination along with the TTM195 has given me a very good graphic environment. CyberCube by the way gives excellent support and is constanly working to improve its product both in increased speed and program compatability. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 22 Tue Nov 23, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 05:16 EST Joe, You might try and find a 17" color monitor that supports TT high. You can get a really good 17" model for about $200 more then the TTM. I think it would be worth the extra bucks! It should be possible to find something. Porbably require a special cable. You could get a switch box and switch between the TT's color resolutions and TT High. Then later, when you add the all incredible Cyrel card, you'll be set monitor wise! It's an extremely nice card! ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 23 Tue Nov 23, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:19 EST Lou: RE: My request for monitor recoomendations: I _do_ plan slam a CyREl card in the TT down the road but not immediately. Will the TT drive a large, non-interlaced SVGA monitor _without_ the CyRel card? Obviously, what I'd like to do here is select a monitor that will work (well) with the CyRel card rather than kludge together a system that will require a new monitor when the CyRel is added. Thanks for the tip on CyRel checking out monitors. Who should I contact there? Ralf? -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 24 Tue Nov 23, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:52 EST Ralf knows his monitors. ;-) As I mentioned earlier, we have a 17" MAG. We can easily remove the monitor plug from the card and plug it in directly to the TT instead. The TT medium resolution will drive all the fancy monitors, albeit not at their most brilliant resolution. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 25 Tue Nov 23, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 20:16 EST Dave, I have an AMAZING 14" SVGA hooked up to my TT. It works out of the box. The SVGA is capable of 1024 by 768. However, the AlberTT card I have needs a different kind of cable so I am waiting for a custom made cable. I also know that I will need a non-interlaced monitor to replace this one when I move up to the CyRel card. It's a shame because the difference in price was only 50.00. Ralf offered to post some test results a while ago. Bug him in the CyRel topic :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 26 Tue Nov 23, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 21:52 EST Nathan: Thanks for your informative reply regarding monitors. You guessed right regarding color. At the present all the color work I do is spot color stuff, I always look to the future when purchasing hardware. It's saved me a bundle. I'm looking at the MAG and NEC multi-sync jobs probably in a 17" version. What I'd really like to find is a place that deals in used or remanufactured Mags or NECs (Anyone out there have a source???) BTW -- is what model NEC is that Mario had with the "Road Show" in Asheville? The CyRel Card is already on the wish list along with more RAM, a MicroTek flatbed, more RAM, a CD ROM, and more RAM. . . you get the picture. Did it ever get released? Did you ever come to a decision on releasing Tms Cranache Studio as far as pricing and existing documentation goes? Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 29 Sat Dec 04, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 11:17 EST Type Art never had an English manual written for it unfortunately but it can be obtained in German if you'd like. The last time I spoke with the Dutch representative of TMS, he was working on completing the English translation of the program itself, again. It seems that TMS lost our original translation of almost 2 years ago. We are all to blame on this one but mostly the bottom line was that the market conditions in terms of new sales caused TMS to reconsider their direction on the Atari platform. I still hope to have an English version of Pre-Vision (the replacement upgrade from Cranach Studio) in the near future. In fact, I'll call Holland again on Monday and get a status check. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 30 Sat Dec 04, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 23:42 EST Thanks Nathan. I don't even remember _what_ Type Art was. As to German versions, I gave up on trying to figure it out long ago. I have enough problems understanding English translations of German interfaces ;-) Keep us informed, especially about Pre-Vision. Sounds interesting. Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 31 Sun Dec 12, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 23:51 EST I would like some opinions from all interested. I'm shopping for a new 600 dpi printer. I have looked at and printed samples from the HP4 and the HP4p. I have also read a little about the new TI 600 and the Brother 10 series. What I want to know: Those of you with the HP LJ4, 4m or 4p - 1) Do you have any problems with the SL drivers @ 600 dpi? For instance, can you access the enhanced mode in 600 dpi? 2) Is the LJ4p "limited" in some significant way, other than being slower? (I've have different printouts from each, and it's pretty hard to compare, but they look to be of similar quality. Salesmen are no help with this question.) 3) How long can a parallel printer cable be (with a TT) before it needs boosting? I need about 12-15'. 4) Any problems at all? 5) Cartridge life/cost? And does anyone have thoughts on, or experience with, the other 600 dpi printers. For instance, the TI 600 comes with true PS level 2 _plus_ PCL5 for the same price as the plain LJ4. How much memory do you _really_ need for 600 dpi full pages in SL? BTW, in the Twin Cities, the price of a LJ4 has jumped up $150 in the last month. Yikes! :-\ Thanks, Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 32 Mon Dec 13, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:02 EST Doug: > 1) Do you have any problems with the SL drivers @ 600 dpi? For > instance, can you access the enhanced mode in 600 dpi? By "enhanced" I presume you mean the RET. That is hardware controlled at the printer and not configurable by the driver, so it doesn't really matter. The original LJIV drivers, while not fully developed have always worked fine with my HP. I understand that the newer drivers had problems so I never bothered with them.... >How much memory do you _really_ need for 600 dpi full pages in SL? I seem to be the only person who runs his LJIV with only the stock 2 megs on board, but I swear that 95% of what I print in SL prints great at 600dpi. The exceptions are grey raster areas bigger than about 5" x 5" or some raster graphics bigger than that. The complexity of the page seems to have little bearing on whether the LJIV will print at 600 dpi or automatically downshift to 300 dpi. This includes full landscape legal pages with lots of graphic stuff and pages full of cvgs and whatever (say the RasGen Tutorial for example ;-) If I were to place say a 5% transparent screenover a page for a background however, the printer will only output at 300 dpi, so I avoid doing that :-). I'm sure my MSTE would print a bit faster with more printer memory, but it's still plenty fast with only the 2 megs on board. Of course I'm not exactly a power user, but I do use lots of rotated tifs and greycale things and get very good results. So if you go with the HP, you might want to see what your limits are before you pop for the extra ram. Hope that helps... The frugal benday ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 33 Mon Dec 13, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:06 EST Doug and Dennis, I believe you would need 6 megs if you wanted to tackle Landscape mode in letter size. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 34 Tue Dec 14, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 00:01 EST >Doug and Dennis, I believe you would need 6 megs if you wanted to tackle >Landscape mode in letter size. Lou, I just loaded a CDK of a 5-panel J-Card that is in legal landscape orientation. I then added a couple of fairly complex cvg's just to clutter it up. My LJIV output the page perfectly at 600 dpi in 2-1/2 minutes using only its stock 2-megs of memory. I realize that everybody says you need the 6-megs, but with the exception of the aforementioned large raster areas, I ain't ever needed it. Maybe I'm just lucky ;-) Anybody else out there have these results? I hate to think I'm the only cheapskate around here.... ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 35 Tue Dec 14, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 01:02 EST Thanks, Dennis and Lou. I am weighing the options with a wary eye at the moment. Why is it that when you decide to expand, something you already have goes belly-up? Tonight my internal Quantum developed a severe case of stiction. Or should I say, "stuction". A few quick raps with the channel-locks finally got it going, I have my doubts about longevity now, however :-) Anyway, I find 3 LJ4 drivers dated 10/24, 12/4, and 12/5/1992. Are these the drivers you are using? Dennis, what do you do for drivers with other software? Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 36 Tue Dec 14, 1993 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 20:55 EST Dennis, Doug7.. I just pulled out my extra 4 megs from my LJ4 so that it would become stock 2 meg. I tried printing 4 of my Leagal size brochures & flyers. one dropped down to 300dpi and another didn't print the bottom inch. The other 2 printed fine. I guess you could get away with 2 megs if you keep it simple and not use large rasters, but that's what I bought this printer for. :>) The printer drivers that is working the best so far is the ones you listed. the 10/27 is for European A4 paper 2551 bytes the 12/04 is for letter 2560 bytes the 12/05 is for legal 2560 bytes As far as drivers for other software goes most HP LJ III drivers work. (300dpi) In fact I still use 1.09N with the HP LJ II driver and it works at 300 dpi on the HP JL4. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 37 Tue Dec 14, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 22:18 EST Now try using the A4 driver on your HP4 in letter mode. It also works fine. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 38 Tue Dec 14, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:53 EST Dennis, cheap or not... it's great that you were successful. A one page CDK in landscape is probably pushing the RAM limit. Why not copy page 1 to page 2 and post your results. I am very interested. Bob, thanks for the post. I, for one, really appreciate that kind of detailed report. In fact, I have saved it in my REFER folder. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 39 Wed Dec 15, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 02:30 EST Well guys, HP4 it is! Heh, heh, I was so excited when I hooked it up that I forgot to install the extra 4 meg SIMM. My first CDK printout was a 600 dpi full-page grayscale in landscape. Gee, I was kinda dissapointed until my son asked me about the SIMM laying on the kitchen counter. :-) Great printer Thanks for all your help! Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 43 Wed Dec 15, 1993 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 18:57 EST Doug, Wise choice... You won't regret it. Have fun with all those 600 dpi rasters. ;>) Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 44 Wed Dec 15, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Kheldar] at 22:45 EST So let me see if i've got this right. I can buy Brush ($30), Color Sep ($50), Vector Editor ($100), and Mask ($150), for $330. Or i can buy the NT version of SL, with all this stuff, plus working printer drivers, plus PS output, for $300. Gee Wally, you think i oughta'. To me this is a fairly large slap in the face considering the fact that i've have support ISD/DMC for many years now. I too can see the writing on the wall for the ST/TT line but i had hoped to get a little more use out of it. What else can i say except that i'm disappointed, and disheartened. Isn't marketing wonderful. Jim. (A sad, and lonely Atari SL user) P.S. I just ran SL and there are still at least 5 functions that are not working. I think i complained when the last update came out, and we were forced to buy modules like compress. I don't mean to whine but i am very frustrated. When will OUR SL be (as Tasha Yar once said) "fully functional." ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 45 Wed Dec 15, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:08 EST Jim, just for clarification, printer drivers (including PS) are part of the Windows NT system. They are not specific Calamus drivers in the Windows NT version. The CWNT price quoted for Atari Calamus owners is a substantial discount over the release price. In that regard your point about the 300.00 limited time purchase of CWNT does not incorporate other factors, like the need to first purchase MS Windows NT and a new computer, laser printer, etc. As for being disappointed... you shouldn't be. In working daily with both systems, I personally prefer my TT to the 486 with Windows NT for running Calamus. You should also understand that Calamus SL development continues for the Atari version. There has been ongoing work on new modules as well as bug fixes and feature activation. I am not sure the 5 functions to which you are referring. Would you please post them for me to check out in the November 1993 version? ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 46 Thu Dec 16, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Kheldar] at 00:03 EST Lou, Thank you for responding, the follow is a list of inactive functions: Module Info 5.5.3.8 PKS Text Block 5.6.4.1 and 5.6.4.2 Monochrome 5.5.2.17 Grayscale 5.5.2.17 Color 5.5.2.17 Protect Text 5.6.1.14 Set Ref Mark 5.6.1.12 Select Ref Mark 5.6.1.9 My point about the NT version is that people buying it outright as new users (say for $550-600 discounted) will get things that we didn't with our versions. Why? The amoung other problems with SL, Master Pages still don't allow you to create different guidelines for different master pages with out going through some stupid load/save workaround. The "new" raster generator was bad from the start and we haven't heard a peep about a new one (I paid for it I want it). And everybody has had problems with printer drivers. Mine was the HP, and was told, "Oh, just rename and use the 1.09 driver it works fine." NOT! When can we get some driver that work. Oh and one more thing. The Printer Driver Generator has some major problems. Try changing measurements from cm to in. You can't set the margins in inch mode. Oh well, guess i'll have to wait another year for another version. Jim. P.S. I reported that Master Page bug after the original release of SL and it is STILL not fixed. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 47 Thu Dec 16, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 01:03 EST Thanks for the encouragement, guys. Maybe I should pass out cigars... Now all I have to do is sell twice as many jobs to offset the increase in hardware costs. Hmm, lets see... 1x2=2 Uh oh... Of course, within hours of spending everything on this beast, Nathan uploads another flyer with more toys. Geesh! Bob, what's a raster? ;-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 48 Thu Dec 16, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:06 EST Lou or Nathan: I'm rather intrigued by the upcoming SL/NT release, because we are in the midst of moving everything to desktop from Compugraphic and Quark 3.1 has not proven to be as robust as I expected and Archetype Designer....well, about as many people have heard of that here as Calamus and it's really limited. My constant harp about Calamus' superiorities is considered amusing by my colleagues but it's the same old Atari deal in the end. Therefore the thought of seeing SL running on our PC's has me very interested. I know that you have been reluctant to discuss SL/NT prior to its release, but could you at least mention the minimum hardware requirements? We have 5 - 8meg 486SX33's w/250 meg HD's. From what I've heard of Windows NT, that's about the minimum you can get by on. Will SL run all right on such machines? And do the Windows drivers mean that we can output at 1200 dpi to our Xante just as we would from Quark? And just how much is NT selling on the street? If SL will run with our existing hardware, than I want it...BTW Lou, what exactly is it that you personally prefer about SL on the Atari platform?... Back in Atari land...I noticed in the mailout that although LineArt is $150, you can upgrade from OL3.0 for $50 and you can upgrade to OL3.0 from 1.0 for $70. Therefore (ahem) could one upgrade from OL1.0 to OL3.0 and on the LineArt for $120? ($70+$50) and still get the 5 free typefaces? Now that would be a deal. Just wonderin'..... Hey Doug, I hope you enjoy your new LJIV. It is a nice piece of plastic. As Nathan once said: you'll never worry about hinting again ;-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 49 Thu Dec 16, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 05:23 EST I'm glad SL/NT is finished! Hope they sell a million! We'll have other people (not on GEnie) that actually understand what we're talking about for a change.:-) Besides the more copies they sell, the longer they'll be in business. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 50 Thu Dec 16, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 09:30 EST As Lou mentioned, the NT version of Calamus will use all the standard Windows NT drivers. This includes PS. The NT version of Calamus is a true NT version, taking advantage of what's there in the first place. I am the Publisher. The suggested retail price that I set is US $795.00 for the base package. I discounted that price more than half to our loyal Atari customers because they deserve it. We have NOT discontinued Calamus SL. It is still being improved, enhanced and upgraded and new modules have appeared without fail every few months all year long! Jim, many of us will have no reason whatsoever to purchase the NT version. Many of us have a rather substantial investment in our Atari platform and are really quite pleased with the quality of the product we are able to produce using Calamus SL, even with its idiosyncracies, perceived or otherwise. BUT, some of us use PC's at the office in our day job and some of us work for companies that, for the first time, will seriously consider Calamus because it is available for a platform other than Atari. And every single one of those people that purchase Calamus strengthen the company overall and put us in a better position to service our entire customer base. AND, since the NT version will take SL's CDK's, this opens up another aspect that will have a positive impact on our Atari workstations. Dennis ... If Windows NT is installed, Calamus will run! Microsoft recommends 8 meg. Personally, I think 12-16 is a more viable RAM figure, marketing hype aside. One of our workstations here is a 66 MHz 486 with 16 meg RAM and a 200 meg hard drive. Both Windows NT and Calamus run just fine. The words "big deal, I've been doing this for years on my Atari" have been uttered more than once in the past six months along with "What! You mean I can't do that in Quark? Well I sure can on my stinky ol' Atari" and "Hey, how come the WYSIWYG sucks...I'm used to *dead-on* display." Here are some answers to your questions. >Module Info 5.5.3.8 This is not a function but a potential link to external programs that might be created by a third party. If you are familiar with OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) in the PC world, you would have some idea of what I speak. >PKS Text Block 5.6.4.1 and 5.6.4.2 The cited chapter numbers are from the previous version of the Text Module. BTW, it is simply Text Block, not PKS Text Block. In the August 1993 version of the Text Module the Start Block and End Block functions _do_ work! > Monochrome 5.5.2.17 > Grayscale 5.5.2.17 > Color 5.5.2.17 These functions were never implemented in the Frame module due to the inability to stabilize the conversion process within that command group. However, these functions work perfectly in the new Bridge module with the added ability to vary between 1-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit and 24/32-bit planes. _And_ you can flip between color plane formats! All in all, the original concept for these functions was not feasible to implement because of the evolving complexity of the various color formats. However, as you can see, development -DID- continue and a finer product is now available. > Protect Text 5.6.1.14 The Protect Text Block function was moved out of the Text module to the PKS Module. The control codes can be inserted for Start and End. Unfortunately, the function does not seem to function as intended. I will add this to my list. > Set Ref Mark 5.6.1.12 > Select Ref Mark 5.6.1.9 > As above, these functions have been moved to the PKS module. It is quite possible to use these functions when applied inside the editor. I will continue testing in order to provide a more detailed report. >Master Pages still don't allow you to create different guidelines for >different master pages with out going through some stupid load/save >workaround. > The master page functions work properly. There is an oddity in the way guidelines are applied to all newly-created Master Pages. However, as you pointed out, saving and re-loading master pages with different guidelines works properly. I am sure a small bug in this area could be fixed. > The "new" raster generator was bad from the start and we haven't > heard a peep about a new one (I paid for it I want it). It has been fixed and our best beta tester has put his stringent seal of approval on it. A number of betas were sent back to us in the last few months that did not pass our standards. You are correct... you didn't hear about the beta testing. It is not usually public information. BTW, you get this fixed module for free if you request the November 1993 Calamus SL update (assuming you had the August version). > And everybody has had problems with printer drivers. > Not really, Jim. SLM owners have never had a problem. HP II owners had problems for which fixes are still being sought. As for the Printer Generator, this free utility suffers from niggly errors and inadequate documentation. I freely admit that more work is required. Hopefully it will not take the year you predict. Perhaps I could close with a general comment: the development of Calamus for Windows NT has not hindered the development of products for the Atari platform. If anything, it has helped things. The list of new and coming modules for the Atari version continues to grow because of DMC Publishing and its loyalty to its customers. If I had the time, I would find the post I made a few months ago listing some the many fixes that have been made since the Feb. 1992 release of Calamus SL. It is more than adequate to demonstrate that the Atari version will continue to grow. Dennis, nice catch :-) I was wondering who would be the first to realize that a couple hundred dollars of free software was available for a little bit of careful reading. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 57 Sat Dec 18, 1993 J.P.C. at 10:00 EST Kudu's to DMC for the upcoming release of SL/NT! It is DMC's policy to rectify the problems as soon as possible and to offer honest information in the interim. I have had the pleasure of hearing some of Nathan's calls to Germany. You think _you_ are complaining? :-) Regarding your marketing suggestions... I am sure Nathan will give them some careful consideration. OTOH, you should also know that the Eurpean price for Calamus products is much higher than in North America. Mask, for example, sells around 500.00 US in Germany. Bridge will be in the same ballpark, I hear. We don't usually discuss this kind of stuff and Nathan is probably going to smack me, but I thought you should have this bit of background. In reply, you were going to see if someone could do a review of PAPER PLATES but, you never got back to me. Maybe that's wrong. In any event, I would be more than happy to send you a copy ASAP, if you would be so kind to give me an address. All of the product registration cards that I've received indicate that everyone who has purchased PAPER PLATES is more than satisfied. In fact, one person bought Calamus 1.09N just so he could use PAPER PLATES!! Only one person mentioned any problems, that being that he considered it a real "pain" to convert the templates when loading them into Calamus S. I'm not real sure just what the problem is. And eveven if you don't make dotted line boxes there's over 60 other borders to choose from and you can make them any size you want up to 24"X24". The even a crop mark feature. Mine does really ugly (if at all) screen redraws that leave lots of garbage around. This happens after each change of an object, like re-setting the line width, etc. Often the garbage include the control boxes around the object frames. More disconcerting is that when working in a large zoom, new line widths are displayed incorrectly. If I zoom all the way out and then go back in they appear correct. A simple Clr-Home does not solve this one! Also, (I don't have the Nov. update yet so can't check this) I wonder whats being done about the color table in relation to Focoltone colors. Here's the thing. If I load a doc that uses several FT colors, and have the FT module loaded as well, and then go into the color table and select a FT color I will see the CYMK values for that color. This is as I would expect, but if I then select another FT color the area that displays the CMYK values vanishes. I have to quit the color table and re-enter it and thusly examine the FT colors one per each time of entering the color table. This seems might odd??? I also can reproduce very solid crashes by manually deleting colors and replacing with another choosen color. This is especially true when choosing the first color in the list as the replacement! Vat's da scoop??? ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 86 Fri Jan 21, 1994 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 18:20 EST About six - eight weeks ago we had a short discussion about grammar and spelling in Calamus. I said I thought I had seen some errors with the hyphenation using English.CWB and said I would keep track of any more I found. The other week I was sure I had found three: stand-ard, cat-ego-ry, and knowl- edge. I started writing a note to Lou to let him know. I pulled out an old Webster's (1962 editon I think) just to prove to him I was right. Turned out I was wrong and Calamus was right. So I had to edit my message before I sent it out - or look foolish when Lou corrected me. Not that I'm going to stop looking for errors, and rely on Calamus entirely for hyphenation. However, it remembers things better and longer than I can. If I think there's an error I hope from now on I will check first and then point my verbal finger. From its release, Calamus for NT will have that ability. You are correct on the "softripping". Calamus will continue to build the page internally and output the resolution of the output device. We already have a driver for the Ultre setter in place. There will be more complex info forthcoming. Frankly, we haven't finished it yet because Calamus itself is still a moving target. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 93 Sun Jan 30, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 10:36 EST Dave, CALAMUS USER is a British user magazine put out by a Calamus user. I am not sure if he is a user group guy or a dealer. In any case, I just read the first two issues and it was quite interesting. The most astounding fact is that DMC Publishing North American prices are _substantially_ lower than those in England. As I recall, Toolbox sells for L250 (about 400.00 US). Mask and Line Art were selling around 500.00 US. This kind of pricing makes me _very_ happy to be living on this side of the pond. They also acquired an undocumented English version of Type Art and reviewed it favorably. No price was quoted nor date for a manual. BTW, I have that version and it is extremely powerful. Other goodies you would find in this 16 page newsletter-mag include some Tips for 1.09N and SL. I don't want to brag, but our own USER to USER files are eminently more informative, sophisticated and valuable. Nevertheless, they had a few things that I did not know. As you would expect, the magazine is full of British ads for DTP software and hardware. The ads comprise about 40% of the magazine. I am not sure about subscription prices. Maybe Nathan can find that information for you. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 94 Sun Jan 30, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 13:13 EST I have just been asked yet again, in email, about the cost of purchasing a second binder as the first on is full for many of you. A voice from the dim and distant past - but someone is going over to the States, which means that mail can go - we have officially given up on the Nigerian Postal system, so we only send mail out when someone is travelling, or if we bunch a batch together and use a courier service. On the other end, the Provincial's office in New York is also sending over weekly packets of mail by private courier. So we are telling everyone - DON'T WRITE TO NIGERIA! Send mail to me c/o Kohlmann Hall, 501 East Fordham Rd, Bronx, New York, USA 10458, ATT: Fr. Wood, and it will be passed on. Actually, you have been on my mind for a while; I just wanted to let you know what an impact Calamus has made in Nigeria. I perhaps have the only Atari in the whole country - and when the dirt and the dust and the ants in the machinery finally crash me, I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do - but in the meantime, I have been knocking off the collective socks of the Jesuits and the general populace. I - who have the artistic and design ability of a mildly retarded chimpanzee - have been put in charge of the Regional Newsletter. From the rave reviews, you would think I had re-invented booze! I have been asked to do brochures, letterheads, bulletins for churches - all because Calamus makes me look so good. I have a Stacy 4, and a Canon Bubblejet - not brilliant hardware, but it is so far above anything they have seen around here that people are breathless. Unfortunately my floptical drive developed a terminal hiccup shortly after I arrived - it is back at Purple Mountain and I am hoping to see its smiling and recovered face soon - so my 40 megs of art and extra fonts are inaccessible. But even without that, thanks to Calamus, I have developed a reputation for knowing what I am doing. As an old theatre friend used to say, "Well, fooled'em again." So if you ever need a testimonial from deep in the African bush, count me testimonialized. One question - this is the old Calamus, not the SL - any reported glitches on the minimal margins setting on the page layout feature? I don't get consistent margin settings when I invoke that function, even though the page size remains constant - I always use A4 - but there are two different settings that can appear, and there seems to be no pattern. Only one is correct - ie, the printer observes the "true" setting no matter what the page shows - and I have learned to keep an eye on it and ignore the "phony" setting when it appears. But I wondered if that had been noted by anyone and if there was a correction. Otherwise life proceeds here apace. We are now in our fourth or fifth straight day without electricity, major travel snafu's for several of our men, bad brakes on the car, heavy rain - life in Lagos is relatively normal. The country is calm at the moment, although several student groups are promising more strikes, and the Petroleum workers are talking strike - which will quickly return us to a fuel shortage situation from which we have only recently emerged. (John continues here with some political commentary that I'd better not post publicly.) I have heard nothing from TAF. I brought over a FAX modem but the phone lines and phone system here are generally so dreadful I haven't even unpacked it. In the normal course of events, you can wait up to two minutes to even get a dial tone, and the average call to the States takes somewhat between 50 and 70 attempts to get through. The line usually disconnects before the number is completely dialed. I've learned not to count on the telephone. Greet your lovely wife for me, take care of your own charming self, and a belated but ongoing thank you for having helped bring this lovely program into the world. It certainly makes me look good, and I just wanted to say thank you. I had used the program in Canada and the U.S. - but over here, I am using it several hours every day - the more I use it, the happier a puppy I become. I just finished a 1994 Calendar for the region that's going into several thousand copies - it was originally intended just for our men, maybe 100 copies - but when the Superior saw it, he started adding people he wanted to send it to. (I think I'm rambling.) Greet anyone for me who should be greeted, and until our paths cross again in person... Are there any plans to port Calamus SL to a Windows 3.1 (or whatever) version for the PC user, since it may be awhile (if ever) before most of us see NT on our everyday work machines. I would buy one for my own use at work if I could. I am continually frustrated by the "tools" we have to work with in the "real" world! It would also be interesting to hear the rationale for the NT target. Is there a topic anywhere on GEnie for Calamus NT discussions? --Jim ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 122 Sat Feb 05, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:03 EST Jim, you are in the right place to discuss Calamus and Windows NT. For discussions about Windows NT, you can go to that specific RT... but you won't find any Calamus discussions there. You are correct in recollecting a previous comment about a Windows 3.1 version to follow the NT version. Can't remember who said it but that would seem to be the plan. As for the selection of NT initially, I would guess it has something to do with the sheer power of those systems with 150 Mhz CPU's, vast memory and storage, etc. These power features are an incredible advantage for professional DTP'ers. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 123 Sat Feb 05, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 21:26 EST NT was chosen for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that there are already NT versions for the Alpha and MIPS RISC chips, Pentium and standard PC. Both SGI and PowerPC have announced soon to be released versions as well. So NT should be not only readily available but on multiple platforms. The folks at DMC are still trying to figure out what happened the last time they wrote a great program, Calamus, for a great computer, the Atari. Seems the computer all but disappeared. Thankfully we have enough of us Atari type Calamus owners to keep us going regardless of how many Atari computers sold last year. ;-) The pending release of the NT version will strengthen us all. Another reason for the NT version is the 32 bit architecture. This was far more appealing to us than the old 16 bit in Windows 3.1. We'll stick with NT. Eventually Chicago will be released or whatever they call it at that time and it will replace Windows 3.1 with a low-end 32 bit Windows system. And then it will have all come together. Hope that helps explain our thoughts. I knew that would liven up the topic! :-) It certainly makes sense to pick the multi-platform solution. That should go a long way toward expanding the user base. I had forgotten the 16 bit vs. 32 bit issue, too. So now we're waiting for Windows to "mature" to the point where it's powerful enough to run Calamus. In other words, waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. I love it! Joe, I could buy Calamus NT only because of Nathan's generous offer to Atari users. I'm not sure Microsoft would be so generous! Besides the cost of Windows NT, I would still have the problem of upgrading my office PC hardware to run it. When I tell them the stuff Calamus SL does that PageFaker won't, or will do but grudgingly (such as simply grouping items), they don't know what to say. I'm looking at upgrading to one of the new HP4's to get that 600dpi output. Anyone using one have any problems with it and SL? Also, how much memory does it have to have? Calamus computes the page then sends it to the printer, the printer needs to be able to receive the whole page in its memory before beginning to print. A dot type printer only prints one line of dots (8,9,or 24) at a time so it does not need much memory, it just tells the computer to hold up till it prints the last line. The laser wants to know about a whole page before it starts printing that page. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 140 Tue Feb 15, 1994 Y.DUFRESNE [Papageno] at 00:18 EST Just to precise what Joe M said about laser printers: Non Atari laser need to hold the entire page in memory before printing it because the parallel port can't transfer the data fast enough for real time printing. Since the DMA allows 10 Mbit/sec, it's possible to transfer the page while it's printing assuming you won't need more than 10 million points per second of printing. It would theoreticly allow the printing of a letter page with no margin at 1034 DPI in ten sec. Pratically, 600 DPI printing should be possible. I only other computer plateforms had a DMA port . Though they >seem to expect Chicago to hit sometime this year, they don't expect NT >to really take hold until 1997. Interesting? NT and Cairo are different. NT is a niche product at this point. It's used for software development and high-end users for server applications and the like. Chicago is the mainstream product upgrade like Windows 3.x. Chicago (Win 4.x) uses the Win32 (32-bit) API, whereas Windows 3.x uses the Win16 (16-bit) API. (API is Application Programmers Interface.) NT currently uses the Win32 API, but can also use the Win16 API for software development. Cairo is something different, which will come after Chicago. Cairo is a 32- bit object-oriented OS. As far an NT not taking hold until 1997, I don't think Microsoft expects it not to take hold anywhere except its niche market. The system requirements for NT are simply too demanding for you and me to have a personal NT machine. In fact, I'm almost sure that Microsoft expects NT to take hold in its niche market well before that time, if it hasn't already. Chicago won't be available until next year at the earliest. Sure Microsloth said this year, but come on' -- what do you think? ;-) You'll be better off waiting for the x.1 version anyway. ;-) Actually, I was kinda surprised when DMC announced Calamus for NT. I mean, why NT? The NT market is barely the size of the Atari-capable SL market (I think they said that NT had shipped 1mil copies so far), so why focus on NT? Your grandmother isn't going to have an NT machine to run Calamus on because the system requirements are too severe. My guess is that the DMC folks didn't want to deal with Windows 3.x; that would be a step backwards in time, since they're accustommed to the ST/TT after all of these years. There's an area under the curve selected called "type"; underneath it says "Bezier". It appears there could be other choices available due to the arrow next to it. I can't get anything to happen here, and would like to know what it does. Anyway, maybe I'm just a bit daft here, especially on such a straight forward module, but I need to know. Then again, until I read the Raster Generator U2U file, I never knew how powerful this module was. Also, Mario, I sent you e-mail on some Raster Generator topics (i.e. supercell screening, etc.) Any response? One other loaded question. In monochome mode, you are able to see your dot patterns. Excellent function, can't find that anywhere else. Will it be possible to see the CMYK patterns (rosettes) on a color screen? Maybe this would be prohibitively processor-intensive, but it seems the technology is there, if you can make out dot patterns in monochrome. Lou, HERE! HERE! on getting MOUNT to be used with legal sheets. Actually, SL and the MOUNT Module will let you do this. I would just set a gutter value in my page setup, and just set MOUNT to print 2 pages on one sheet. Comparing to what Pagemaker does is the difference that you adjust for gutter/creep within their equivalent module, as opposed to within the main program The difference between 2-up saddle stitching and 2-up perfect bound is that the former prints 2 pages side by side. MOUNT already does this. Perfect bound is for when a series of booklets are put together, collated and bound (like a book). If it were to be incorporated into MOUNT, What you might do is tell it how many pages to cluster into an intermediate booklet, and then when those books are stacked, the booklets are arranged so the page numbers are properly consecutive. Re: Rosettes Have I missed something? First off, I thought the only way you could see any WSYWYG dot patterns is in mono mode (I've seen them), but I've not seen them in color. I do have my Raster Screen Display on, if I remember correctly. I'll check again, but in the meantime, could you tell me how this is done? Note I have a Crazy Dots 8 board, which gives me 256 colors. Now stand back and see what results. I can tell you that the RTF driver has been written for the NT version although that's not what you wanted to hear. I can also tell you that I've requested I get an RTF driver for the SL version, of course. I can further tell you that right now the relevant programmer is working on the completion of the NT version. As a result, I do not expect to get the SL driver until they get the NT version out the door. Again, not what you wanted to hear but a reality nonetheless, that insures our future. Can you understand that? Sincerely Nathan Potechin - DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 159 Sun Feb 27, 1994 DMCPUBLISH [Mario] at 20:00 EST Tom, Yes, I should have gotten back to you sooner, I am sorry about not responding, so here goes. 1. Photoshop curves can be utilised by visually copying them, several publications about photoshop actually show the curves in dialog form. You simply duplicate these curves in All-curve. Not too hard, eh? however duplication does not mean copying ... I mean adapting ... this should be done with full knowledge of what photoshop curve is actually doing to your elements. 2. The Type function is not active in Allcurve it simply allows you other types of definition (ala Calamus). The supercell screening issue is basically the same principle as is discussed in the Manual you were referring to. The Rosettes will only appear on colour modes that are 4 bits (16 colours - TT medium resolution or graphic Cards supporting 4 bit. The 8 bit and 24 bit modes use different display codes and therefore do not support the display of rosettes. Stephen ... The RTF driver will have a *.CIT extension and it will be available after the NT version is released. (Thanks to you too Lou, at least now I know how I can see the patterns) Anyway, I'll try 16 color mode agiain. My VDI drivers for 4 bit seem buggy, or else its somewhere in my Turbo board/CrazyDots/NVDI combo. Re: All Curve stuff OK, now I understand. I certainly can try some of those curves for PhotoShop with AllCurve. A friend showed me a curve he applied to text to give sort of a metallic or shiny effect. I know the shpe of the curve, but can't seem to apply it in SL. Not blaming SL, 'cause I still have a lot to learn with PhotoShop. BTW, could you recommend a few of these books? You know I already have The PhotoShop Bible; or better yet, how about uploading a few you may have created? ;-) Re: Supercell screening I wanted to be sure that the Raster Generator did supercell screening as described, so I can use it as a reference. THANKS! ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 162 Tue Mar 01, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 00:08 EST Tom, I believe there is a Mario file called SUPRCELL.TXT in Library 30. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 163 Tue Mar 01, 1994 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 21:15 EST Lou, Thanks! I'll check it out. Tom ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 164 Wed Mar 02, 1994 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 01:19 EST Mario, I wonder if you might elaborate on some points of the Bridge manual, as well as about a tip you have posted, concerning the converting of color images? My thought is that you might do this via an example by using an image, say a Kodak Photo CD image, and then describe the steps and settings to convert it to a CYMK file suitable for Lino output at 2540 dpi., for four color separations. Perhaps you could pick a medium resolution and a higher resolution sample of the same Photo CD image? Further, perhaps you could do the same for a scanned color image, say a TIF scanned at 300 dpi, and one at 600 dpi??? Now part of my confusion around this question comes from your tip and the 'hint' in the manual about setting the screen resolution in the System Parameters and then optimising the image for 'printer' at 1:1 before doing the Bridge conversion. It is clear enough when thinking of a printer that uses 300 x 300 dpi. (still a rather large file results, no?) ...But a Lino 'printer' at 2540 by 2540 dpi seems an unlikely setting for the Sys. Parameters. You see my confusion, I'm sure! I know this isn't the most fun for you, but explaining it by use of an example all the way through would possibly clear up a lot of questions for many users. Whatchatink? Thanks in advance, Stephen ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 165 Thu Mar 03, 1994 DMCPUBLISH [Mario] at 21:19 EST The crucial thing to remember here is to forget about your output device and to consider the line screen density you are looking for lets say you want a 4 x 4 photo at 133 lpi. You would scan the image at 266 dpi and then enter 266 dpi in the system parameters module. You import the scan and click on optimise to screen, you the use the raster generator to apply the screen values (133 lpi) and set the resolution for your output device in the dpi entry field (in your case 2540 dpi) the optimised graphic would be approximately 4 x 4 inches based upon your scan. The reason you forget about the resolution of of your output device for screens is that the scans are unaffected by the resolution of your imagesetter when you apply the 2xlpi rule. hope this helps ... Thus, you would set the screen rez in the Sys.Param. Mod to 266 and optimize for _SCREEN_. The picture will be scaled at 266. I know it's sort of ancient history, but Degas elite had a wonderful ablility to not only edit fill patterns but to also start that process by 'grabing' a section of the screen and then to save libraries of the fills thusly created. Also, in DE the fills could be made of up of whatever colors are on screen at the time. An advanced version of that would really be super keen. In the 'meantime' one can achieve some limited approximations of a custom fill look by creating bit map 'fills' as various kinds of bit image files in other programs, import them into SL and use Mask along with another shape to make what you want. Not a click-click process but it does produce some interesting results. %^) While we are on the subject of fills, something that would make bit map gradient blended fills, say of three colors, would be pretty nice too! Sincerely Nathan Potechin - DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 186 Fri Mar 25, 1994 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 00:46 EST Can anyone fill me in on video capture options with Calamus? Here's why I'm interested: Last weekend, my company did a show for kids at the Merchandise Mart. Part of our booth had a Pintaar Video System set up which allowed us to blend people into the cover of one of our publications (Chicago Parent), along with Barney or Bugs Bunny or Bill Clinton etc. We printed via a Mitsubishi video printer at low rez on cheap fax-like paper, stapled it into a folder and charged a buck. We made $600, which just about covered the equipment rental and the operator for 2 days :-). It was a hit. Anyways, at the theatre I work at we take a lot of Polaroids of customers in various gag and/or amorous poses with showgirls/guys/each other. The Polaroids probably cost a buck a piece and we sell them at cost as a promotion. The video output is B/W and probably costs 2 cents on the cheap thermal paper -but- it is video oriented and I saw how people went wild queuing up to get on TV. We'd like to try it at the theatre, but who wants to rent or buy a system if we can roll our own with what I already have. So...my question is, is there a way to import live video into SL, merge the picture with graphics and output them *quickly* to a printer such as the Mitsubishi? Quick turnaround is the key. The Pintaar system was a camera feeding to a laptop (looked like a Stacy...naah, couldn't be) and to the printer, very compact and fast. That's the key. So if anyone here has any wisdom on this, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks.... ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 187 Sun Mar 27, 1994 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 14:11 EST I have been thinking about switching from an SLM804 to a "standard" laser printer, possibly one with Postscript ability. I train people to use IBM type computers, so must have a DOS box on my desk as well as my ST, and must produce documents with DOS WordPerfect to show trainees what can be done with that system. At the moment I have both a dot matrix for the IBM and the SLM804 hooked up to my ST. I need better quality output from WordPerfect and I would like to have just one printer on my desk that I could use with both machines. Unfortunately that can't be the SLM804. I have 1.09N on my ST. Are there any serious deficiencies or differences between the output of an SLM804 and a "standard" HP laser (not the desktop 500 series) using 1.09N? The Calamus manual seems to imply that each Calamus page is sent to the printer as an image. While that would mean 2MB (or more) of RAM in an HP compatible, it also would mean no problems with rotated text on an HP machine, among other things. If I bought a new printer which was Postscript compatible (either Level 1 or 2) is there a Postscript driver for 1.09N? I want to gain back some desk space without sacrificing the joys and results of Calamus. Robert in Toronto ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 188 Sun Mar 27, 1994 DMCPUBLISH [Mario] at 16:42 EST Sorry Robert, there are no PostScript based drivers that are suitable for use in 1.09N ... however, the HP LJIV is a good printer that will work with both your Atari and PC. The quality difference between the SLM and the LJ IV is substantial and I would easily recommend it for both Calamus and your PC apps. Did a doc in a word processor, and printed on both a real HP III and the 804. You could tell a major difference in the quality of the text just by looking. The doc did not contain any graphics. I think you best bet is to try a printer before you buy it. I looked at new printers while on vacation (I live in the remote part of Alaska, and I took a STacy with me to the stores and plugged in ), and a case in point is the Okidate 410e. The graphics printing wasn't really any different, but the reso enhancement made a big difference in the text quality. Take a good look at what you will be printing, and then try them. You should get the file selector box at the point you mention (be _sure_ to include a .CVG extension when you enter the name). My other guess would be to check your file selector. I use UIS III. If you're using a non-standard file selector I'd disable it. One other thing you might check is the location of the of the files, they should all be in the B_BUNDLE folder. Border Bundle has saved me a _bunch_ of time and allowed me to produce _much_ more professional result than the competition (called a "leg up" ).
