A classic example is the latest discussion pertaining to a regular Calamus Newsletter, or DTP Newsletter or Calamus article or .... This discussion is currently going on in two other topics here. :-) Us Calamus people seem to go off on interesting tangents on a fairly regular basis. :-) I started this topic for all of us here that just love our little tangents. Please discuss anything of which we can possibly have a shared knowledge and interest, relating to the product line of course. While I will certainly comment on Atari's presence at Comdex over in the show Category, I will talk specifically on the Calamus and desktop publishing related aspects here if you'd like By the way, both Mario and I will be at Comdex all next week. For those of you unfamiliar with Comdex, it is the single largest computer and hi-tech show held in North America. They expect about 120,000 people. It is only open to the trade, not to the public, theoretically. Atari has a large exhibit in the Sands Convention Center. Oh yes, did I mention, it is in Las Vegas? Mario and I will staff a single loaded TT/Calamus workstation, using a Mitsubishi 21" hi- res monitor, a brand new 24 bit Cybercube card, a 300 dpi continuous tone dye sublimation printer (also from Mitsubishi) and the SLM605 etc.. Actually, Mario will staff it, I'll cover for him when he wants to eat or something. :-) Most of you will remember Ditek International. This Comdex will see the first public showing of the Windows version of DynaCADD 3.0. They also have a booth in the Sands. I expect I will be doing a little back and forth. Last I heard, DynaCADD 3.0 will be released under Atari, Windows, NeXT, Amiga and Mac in 1993. Imagine a scenario where Windows income supports Atari development. I like that. :-) Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 2 Fri Nov 13, 1992 DITEK [David] at 10:22 EST Nathan, >> Imagine a scenario where Windows income supports Atari >> development. Sigh. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 4 Fri Nov 13, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 19:55 EST Dave, I can only buy so many copies of DynaCADD a year.:-) On the newsletter issue... You know my address, ship it out!:-) Subscribe me up! I'd like to see coverage of all DMC products since they all work so nicely together. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 5 Fri Nov 13, 1992 J.KUDRON [Jim~ST Sysop] (Forwarded) Maybe we should cover all bases and have the newsletter apply to DMC products (Not just Calamus). That way, Invision Elite, Outline Art, and any future products would be covered. I also wouldn't mind _some_ advertising. As long as the ads were for products that made Calamusing easier! (Fonts, accellerators, 68060 chips etc). Jim Kudron 13Nov92 ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 6 Fri Nov 13, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 20:52 EST I imagine that any such newsletter would cover not only all DMC products, but all those peripheral products that are also affected by Calamus SL, from software to printers to monitors to graphic cards to CD players with lots of great art etc.. :-) Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 7 Sat Dec 12, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 12:12 EST So how was your Thursday/Friday? Let me tell you about mine. :-) Toronto received this massive snowstorm, compliments of our neighbours to the south. :-) I think we got something obnoxious like 2 feet of snow. Trees broke under the weight. Power, cable and telephone lines were down all over the region. This was more snow than Toronto had seen since before I was born. :-) We lost power 3:00 a.m. Friday morning, regained it for an hour and a half Friday afternoon, then lost it again until 1:45 a.m. this morning. It was cold at the Potechin household. One of my neighbours was seen shovelling his driverway at midnight. I nearly joined him. No power = no GEnie AND no TV. I couldn't sleep as Darlah and I were taking turns feeding the fireplace with logs so that the sleeping kids were kept warm. Try to imagine a campout on a hardwood floor in our living room, with sleeping bags and blankets, kids and dog. And now I have to go out and remove the 25 feet of evergreen that broke off the top of the 75 foot evergreen in my backyard, and landed right on the cable wire, ripping it smoothly right out of the wall. And how was your day? Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 8 Sat Dec 12, 1992 G.NORTON [Quay Comptrs] at 14:11 EST Nathan, You really should move to Vancouver! We haven't seen a snowflake yet...bit of rain maybe, but no snow! :) Graham ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 9 Sat Dec 12, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 14:14 EST Not to worry Graham... rain, FREEZIN rain, is forecast for this afternoon to make our driving even more fun :( ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 10 Sat Dec 12, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:23 EST Of course Lou lives 10 miles from me so we get entirely different weather. :-) Tell you what Graham, you move Quay (key) up here and I'll head over to Vancouver. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 11 Sat Dec 12, 1992 AEO.3 [Lyre] at 19:30 EST Nathan, Oh sure, blame it all on me! I did *not* invite that storm into Connecticut! However, on the more serious side, I do hope that things are okay at this point. I understand your situation - I've got almost the same except we didn't have permanent power outages. Just periodic brown-outs. Lyre ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 12 Sat Dec 12, 1992 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 22:02 EST Nathan, My Thursday/Friday was pretty much the same as yours. :) I'm one of those "neighbors to the south" you mentioned and here I got about 2 feet also. I've been without power for about 20 of the last 48 hours and like you have been stoking the wood during those power outs. I've burned through a few candles also. :-) This is the most snow I've seen in Connecticut in my 15 years here. Luckily my neighbor offered me the use of his snowblower for the afternoon. Otherwise I would have been shoveling until tomorrow afternoon just to get my truck out for work on Sunday evening. As it is I've got a path out the driveway, a small turn-around, and the walk to the house done. That was after 6 hours (STRAIGHT HOURS!) of working that 7hp self-propelled blower. As you can tell my driveway is a bit on the "long" side. :-) I guess that's what I get for living way out in the country on over 2 acres. I guess I shouldn't complain too much though. Down on the CT coast they got rain, killer tides, and winds. Many of them were flooded out and had to be rescued. All I did was sit around and catch up on my reading (by candlelight). :-) Wayne P.S. Lyre, Whereabouts do you live in CT? I'm in Burlington which is west of Hartford. I got just about all snow here. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 13 Sat Dec 12, 1992 J.RENNER1 [Jim] at 22:29 EST Nathan, I can appriciate your dilema. Two years ago in early 1990 we in Rochester New York and the surrounding area had a very nasty ice storm. I have never seen anything like it. We lost upto 50% of tree in certain areas because of the weight of the ice The power and phone lines were down to the point that we got extra crews from all over New England to help. We were without power and phones for 8 DAYS!!!!! No TV, no showers, no heat, and no computers (didn't even have my Lynx then). So i understand what it's like to be without modern conviences. I NEVER want to go through that again. But you know, as is was freezing rain, it was one of the most beautiful sights i have ever seen. (I think there is a Calamus analogy in there somewhere. ;^} ) Jim. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 14 Sun Dec 13, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 00:57 EST Sounds like FUN!! Wish we'd get some real snow... best it did here was rain and get cold. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 15 Sun Dec 13, 1992 AEO.3 [Lyre] at 11:08 EST Wayne, I'm in Naugatuck. The snow started on Thursday night and kept coming until late last night. I live, technically, on a mountain (it's the appropriate # of feet above sea level) although to the rest of Naugatuck it's just a large hill. BTW, think your neighbor will let us borrow the snowblower? ;) Lyre ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 16 Sun Dec 13, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:54 EST Most snow since 1944. Knowing Toronto, by Tuesday the snow will be all melted away again. :-) Meanwhile, I've finished converting big broken trees into little manageable logs and the troops (our kids) then carried them all around to the front of the house for pickup. I do agree though, a truly beautiful sight. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 17 Sun Dec 13, 1992 J.DERNAR at 21:12 EST I guess I am to blame for Nathan's troubles. Here along Lake Erie, just west of Cleveland, all we got was a bit of rain. We actually hoped to get some of that snow as the skiing has been lousy so far. But seriously, I hope that all of you and your families were unharmed by the weather. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 18 Sun Dec 13, 1992 G.NELSON16 [xoxo] at 23:12 EST I know this is slightly off the chain here but, I've just purchased today DynaCadd 2.04.02 (i think that was the release number) and will soon send in my warranty card. Any chance for anything similar for the Atari/Calamus users? ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 23 Mon Dec 14, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 23:54 EST Atari Calamus users want access to the engine. In this case, it is a 600 dpi engine. The addons do not change that fact. They use dithering algorythms instead. Now a 1200 dpi engine for a few thousand might be interesting indeed. :-) Meanwhile I love the 600 dpi engine! I the road to my house is uphill for about the last 4 miles. It's not a steep grade, but it's much higher than most of the surrounding hills. I just ventured out for the first time since the snow hit, and while I got over 20" of snow here, about 10 miles west (West Hartford/Hartford) they only got about 10" or so. And for that putridly small amount of snow they all went out and bought up every snowblower in sight. Monday's mission is to find a snowblower at a reasonable price. (GOOD LUCK!) I started working on the latest DMC Customer Mailout in October. I handled the mailout to Australia and New Zealand first. We went direct to our customers there this time, rather than using Atari Australia. Due to the right- sizing of Atari Australia, who handled Calamus support for me previously, and its impact upon my own Calamus user base there, they had not received an update since the February release. I am now becoming much more blase over receiving long-distance telephone calls from Australia. I received 4 today alone. I have to get these people online! :-) Regardless, I handled them first and then rewrote parts of the customer mailout for North America. And that's where I made a mistake. It took us three weeks to complete the mailout here. I never anticipated it would take so much time to fold up those posters and stuff from 11-14 pages into an envelope. Day to day operations cannot be allowed to stop simply to stuff envelopes so the actual mailout stretched out longer and longer. The end result is that many customers, important customers (ALL OUR CUSTOMERS ARE IMPORTANT) are only just now receiving their customer mailout, weeks after others received theirs. With the holiday season upon us NOW and the offices of DMC Publishing closing the afternoon of December 24, 1992 and re-opening January 4, 1993, it has become clear that I have done some of my customers a diservice for which I can both apologize and maybe even make amends. I am pleased to announce that I will extend the terms of all the promotions enclosed in our customer mailout. As of right now, the 40% promotional discount on all original typesetter fonts from AGFA Compugraphic, Linotype and URW, the ridiculous clearout prices on VIP, Masterplan and STAcounts, the dynamite sale prices on the Calamus Font Editor, Outline Art, Calamus 1.09N, the Clip Art, the User 2 Users disks etc. is hereby officially extended to January 31, 1993. Please accept this extension as a token of our appreciation to you all, our Registered customers and allow me to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best through this holiday season and a very Happy New Year. Merry Christmas to me! First question upon reading the manual, where it says that a registra- tion card, reference card and order form are all included along with the manual and program disks. They weren't. Of course, that was in the SL introduction, so maybe I haven't drawn the line of distinction between S and SL clearly enough yet. Remember, it's not so bad to make a mistake, it's refusing to admit it and correct it that will really get you in trouble. So far, you're not doing too badly. Don 8^) Happy Holidays ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 38 Mon Dec 28, 1992 POTECHIN [RT~Sysop] at 11:05 EST :-) Hmmm, a registration card might have been already handled when it was sent to you and the order form comes with the regular customer mailouts. You must have gotten the manual and program disks or I would have heard you yelling all the way to Toronto. Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 44 Fri Jan 01, 1993 POTECHIN [RT~Sysop] at 18:19 EST Yes. You haven't loaded one of the external modules named DOC_CONV.CXM. This module automatically converts a 1.09N document into Calamus S/SL format. I wish all answers were so easy. :-) Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 45 Fri Jan 01, 1993 D.HARRIS8 at 19:38 EST I'll check that one. Thanks. I hate to complain, but I feel like I've never used Calamus before! I'm having problems doing the simplest things that were a cinch to me in 1.09. After 10 minutes of tring to print one page, I finally had to turn my computer off. Yup, everything just went to sleep after printing half of a page. I'm using a 4 meg 1040 STe W/TOS 2.06 and an Adspeed STe. My printer s an HP Deskjet 500. Nope, it's not my connects. Never had this problem before or after dasheets. Please load in your Systems.CXM external Module and let us know the current settings for ST RAM and Vector Output Buffer. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 49 Fri Jan 01, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:08 EST Glenn, if you had 24 fonts in memory (to use up the 24 sheets) then your ST system memory was very likely maxed. There are a number of ways to solve your problem.... used less than 24 fonts, turn on the Virtual Memory, increase System Memory in the System Parameters module, or DELETE ALL modules after you have loaded in all your fonts. Any one or combination of these suggestions will work. FYI, I have used it without a glitch on my Mega 4, TOS 1.4, T25, SLM804 and the SLM needs 1 meg of RAM all on its own! I can print the 24 pages in less than 15 minutes. Your DJ is gonna be slower but it will work. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 50 Sat Jan 02, 1993 A.VALENT [Mike] at 09:57 EST Don, do you remember the message themes from last February (I think) and March when SL was first getting to the early upgraders? My impression then exactly matched yours. Mentally you MUST see SL as an entirely new program - not as an extension or enhancement of 1.09N. While you enjoy what 1.09N can do, your mind will have also accepted and dismissed those things that it cannot do. Thus use of 1.09N has become "automatic". SL not only gives you new functions, but it provides micro-control over individual elements of those formerly "automatic" 1.09N functions. At first I found this maddening, but soon enough that stage passed. Right now I'm reworking a user group flyer that I did in 1.09N, and that's demonstrating to me not only how much more capable SL is, but how much simpler it now is to do some of the special effects that I had to use "workarounds" to get in 1.09N. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 51 Sat Jan 02, 1993 G.GORMAN2 at 23:02 EST Nathan, My settings are as follows ST RAM = 65536 bytes and Vector Output Buffer = 225000 bytes. Again I have a 4 meg 1040 STe, w/tos 2.06 and an Adspeed STe, no math co-processor. I did as Lou suggested, dropping the modules that I didn't need. While this helped a little bit, it still took me 30 minutes to change 9 of the fonts. By this I mean, changing the font name and filename in the text frame. As a matter of fact. One time, after clicking on the Open Editor icon, it took 55secs for the editor to open. Also, this all took place with only 9 pages loaded. After replacing 9 fonts I figured that was enough. Question: Which Math Co-Processors does Calamus recognize??? I also sent Jim Allan a message asking about the Turbo upgrade. I was wondering if he had one for the 1040 STe. Glenn... ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 52 Sat Jan 02, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:38 EST Glen, that is unbelievably slow. Do you have any ACC's or AUTO programs loaded that might be interfering with RAM? ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 53 Sun Jan 03, 1993 A.VALENT [Mike] at 08:42 EST Glenn - up the ST Ram setting to 256000 bytes. My Mega 4 with T-16 should be operationally equivalent to your STe with Adspeed. It appears that your 64k setting is 'choking' SL on the operations you described. I also run 256000 bytes for the Vector Output Buffer. I do run virtual memory on a 4 meg hard drive partition. Have had no signifigant problems with vm, and SL doesn't have to use the vm all that often. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 54 Sun Jan 03, 1993 POTECHIN [RT~Sysop] at 10:35 EST I'd follow Mike's suggestions please. Also, if you wish, please email me the file in question. I'd like to take a closer look at it and maybe offer an informed opinion rather than guessing. But first, try changing your settings as Mike suggested and let us know if this changes things. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 55 Sun Jan 03, 1993 D.HARRIS8 at 13:10 EST Lou, thanks, I'll get the MARIOSET. I also d/l'd the tips and tricks Key Bindings Index that Mike Valent worked up. I think it will help, too. Nathan, I'm sure that will come. As it is, I don't use Calamus nearly as much as I used to, so I'm used to turning on the computer, working for a while, and moving on. Now I find I have to stop and think and search for everything I'm trying to accomplish. I knew there would be a learning curve, but I guess I want to leap instead of walk through it. Mike, thanks for the encouragement. I think I have come to see that S(L) is indeed much improved, and different. Most of what I'm having difficulty with, I think, is getting it set up so I can go ahead and start working. Like you said, much of what was automatic in 1.09, and that now I have to configure. It's back to work on Monday, so one day this week I'll have to drop my Auto folder and any acc's that I have and give it a try. Mike; Thanks will give this a try. Did you know there is a fix for your DJ (less than $1.00) that will eliminate the problem. it involves adding a $0.25 diode to the printer cable. If I didn't have the Moniterm or an accelerator, I think I'd find the money to move to a TT or perhaps a Falcon, if and when it becomes available. Speed on a Mega can be improved but unless you have better than the ST High 640*400 display, your working area's just too small. I used to run 704*480 on the Mega using Overscan and that helped, but the Moniterm's 1280*960 is ideal for (B&W at least) work. Just wish I'd gotten Moniterm's 24" monitor instead of the 19"... unlike young Jim Allen, I suffer from the dreaded 'aging eyes'. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 75 Sat Jan 09, 1993 POTECHIN [RT~Sysop] at 08:26 EST I have a 24" Moniterm Mike. I did change the Vector Output Buffer to 120,000 (then I even tried 640,000!) but didn't seem to help. Yes, the ST Ram was set at 8192. I wasn't sure what it was for, and I couldn't change it there. I thought maybe it meant as long as I had that much free RAM I was okay... No? gee. By the way, the pages have very FEW graphics! I have been adding some vector graphics to some, but it's mostly text... very s..l..o...w text. I'll keept at it. It'll come. Thanks. Also, I had the WARP9 and Border Bundle DA'z running, so that probably added to the slowzies. Lou, I did d/l the Defauts file, but if I'm not mistaken it was set up for a TT, so I didn't use it. Mike, I'm on a stock Mega 4 and the li'l SM124 mono. Does get to be a pain scrolling around the screen. Maybe a virtual screen will be one of the next enhancements, eh, Nathan? Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 78 Sat Jan 09, 1993 D.HARRIS8 at 22:12 EST By the way, should this be in the SL topic, or does S need a topic of its own, or is it okay right where it's at, or does anybody care? Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 80 Sun Jan 10, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 11:41 EST Don, the USER to USER files were created to load and print on all Atari computers. The SET file in DEFAULTS.LZH was created by myself based on an ST... my Mega 4. The MARIOSET.LZH .SET file may have been created on a Mario's TT but the only difference you would see might be the setting of TT RAM in the System Parameters Module. Other than that, there are no TT specific settings. Are you using a stock Mega 4 at 8 Mhz? And yes.. a TT is a terrific improvement although the better option would seem to be the TinyTurbo030 which is supposed to be 250% the speed of the TT! I'm sure I'll be upgrading to get the L after my S (am I allowed to say that?) sooner or later. There are some things I've seen in SL that I want or need, even color isn't one of them (yet). Lou, yes I'm on a stock Mega 4. I think I'm ready to give the TT a try. 250% speed increase on the TinyTurbo030? That's phenomenal. If I didn't already have the money out for a TT I might try that route. I'm sure I will be quite happy with the performance of the TT030, though. What I need to do also is to d/l the SL topic and wade through it. A lot of my questions have probably already been handled, I just have to fine them (make that "find" them), such as How in the world do you set the paragraph indents and margins? Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 86 Mon Jan 11, 1993 F.LOWE1 [FRANK LOWE] at 09:39 EST LOU I'm really getting confused. I read on here of so many different settings for ST RAM & Vector RAM and have changed my figures on five different occasions. Knowing that everyone has a different configuration has given me confidence to do these changes, but when YOU published your setting of 65,000 & 128,000 respectively I immediately changed them again because you have an identical set up to me. The time has come for someone to actually explain what happens when this RAM is set aside for the ST/Vector. It may have been fully explained before, but if you have a mo please give it another bash Lou. Secondly, someone mentioned that Warp 9 has, built in, a paging fix. I cannot get it to work and have to install Button Fix each time I run SL. Can you confirm this Lou? Apart from these two items I am still having great fun and am producing good work. I have just ordered, from my local Atari store in Vancouver (we actually have two stores here) a great program called CAL ASSIST; any special instructions for using this will be appreciated. Easy on the hair loss (heh) anywhere but the keyboard. Frank 6.15am Monday January 11th 1993. Minus 12C ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 87 Mon Jan 11, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:22 EST Hey Frank! Those settings I just posted were for my Mega 4 and they work very well for me. But please realize that things need to change depending on the nature of your documents.... the more fonts you load, the more vector graphics, the use or absence of caches all determine how much System Memory and Vector Buffer you need. My set up works very well for me: I load 4 to 7 fonts per document (I actually _use_ 2 or 3) and my projects are generally no longer than 25 pages. On my TT, I have more RAM so I use it! For example, the Font Poster chart was created with CDK's converted with Dataformer to CVG's. Some of the sections had as many as 60 fonts which required lots of ST RAM so my Sys Param module was modified for that work. On the EPS>CVG program, I needed more Vector Output buffer for the beta testing I did so that area was increased. As I hope you can see, the System Parameters module is configurable for the job at hand. Some general rules I follow: Leave at least 1100 Kbytes of ST RAM for SLM printing... therefore I do not set System Memory higher than 512000 bytes. Most document have a handful of vector graphics so I don't need to reserve more than 128000 bytes for the vector output buffer. I only use the Virtual Memory with very long documents... thereby extending the real and virtual RAM available. I never use the caches as they eat up RAM in a blink. If I get tired of watching the same frames redraw, I turn them off in the Frame Display command group. I always turn off the master page contents to speed things up. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 88 Tue Jan 12, 1993 G.GORMAN2 at 23:39 EST Making dasheets into less pages is easy. Lou or somebody, when printing dasheets, the very bottom raster area does not print with the rest of the page. It prints on a page by itself. It's a bit to close to the bottom margin for my Deskjet. Just click the master page icon and move the troublesome frame to a printable area. Here's a little tip if you want to do form letters, or some project with only one or two changing elements on each page.... put all the 'common' elements on the master page and use a simple text chain on the actual layout pages. While you are working on the actual layout pages, turn OFF the display of the master pages for extra speed! I just printed out 550 original tax receipts for a volunteer organization. Three copies of the receipt were located on the master pages. Three piped text frames were positioned on each of 185 layout pages. An ASCII list of donors was output from the original database. The job took 30 minutes to setup and 2 hours to print. Last year it took the treasurer 12 hours to handrwrite all the receipts. Well gee, sorry 'bout that, ...maybe try some Pepto Bismo.... (sorry folks, but I couldn't resist... cabin fever from all the rain out here!) BUT SERIOUSLY, NOW: OK... click on the Master page icon. Then use the Magnifing Glass to zoom in on the bottom of the page, so that your screen is ALMOST filled with the page and a little gray desktop shows left, right and bottom. Now select the Modify Frame icon [5.5.1.8] (or click the right mouse button) and the cursor should become the famous 'finger'. Place this on the strip of gray desktop at the left of the page, just a little above the two frames you want to move and with the left mouse button held down, drag a 'rubber band' box to generously engulf those two frames. (Be sure NOT to engulf any other frames!) When you release the left mouse button, those two frames will become selected. (since we're working with DASHEETS, be sure to wipe the 'finger') Now, hit Alt. G to group them. Then, rather than dragging them, use the X- Position Frame/Pointer [5.1.1.8] (which I prefer to call the co-ordinate display) to enter a new value for Y=. The original value for Y should read 10.590 inches for this group frame. Simply change it to what you want, like 10.000 or even 9.500.... whatever, and hit Return. Now with the Group Frame still selected, hit Alt. U, for 'Ungroup Frame', then click the Master Page icon again so it is de-selected, and you should be all set. I decided it must be there for a purpose, so I clicked on it! I've been a Master Paging Fool ever since! Lou, a clipart slide show from Calamus would be great. Even a feature that would allow you to view a pic before loading, ala CorelDraw! would be nice. You could call up the import module, click on a file name, then click on a view button (if there was one) and find the pic you want to load without having to load it and THEN look to see if that's what you wanted. There appears to be a market here for a project I have in mind and certainly the most economical means would be use of a tabloid. I've never done one and would like to get the run down on methods. I know the E. Arthur Brown Company produces their tabloid style catalog using PgS. If PgS can do it, I'm sure Calamus SL can do it BETTER. I'd like to hear from someone that has actually done production on a tabloid. Specific questions: o Is it possible to output full size pages in PostScript using DataFormer rather that tiling (I think tiling is how E.A. Brown does theirs). o What's "ball park" on prcing of tabloid runs in other areas of the country? o Any other tips regarding tabloid production would be appreciated. Unfortunately, I can't afford to wait very long for the templates. Right now all I'm realy looking for is someone that has done tabloid production using Calamus SL. Here's some questions for starters (for anyone that may know). o Aside from the obvious size restrictions for producing a comp, what is the best way to produce the layout? Is DataFormer stable enough in its present form? Is the PostScript format even feasable for tabloid format? Are most tabloid production plants (read newspaper printers) working off some other dedicated production system that generates output directly? Are we reduced to cut & paste of galleys on the 'ol comp boards (or maybe tiling)? o Does anyone know off a source of information regarding the larger production plants? I understand there are some bigger national operations that produce tabloids at a substantial savings. Again, I'm tracking on it, but would appreciate hearing from people that have used these services. o Are there any "hidden" costs in this type of production? A this point I've dusted off LDW Power! and I'm doing as feasibility study and really don't want to miss anything (new turf you understand). It doen't matter which position I have it set at under miscellaneous Settings. And another one. When in the text editor. If I click on the text ruller and set the lines/paragraphs to Absolute, there is no way of changing it back to Relative after I've sent it to the text frame. I've even tried adding another text ruller, but that one also comes up as Absolute. Also, will there be a new manual in the future???? I really hate these darn readme.txt files. Hey, here's a suggestion. How about instead of one long readme file, you could just redo the page in the manual. However, it would require that an entirely new manual be created in order to establish the page format required to handle this approach to upgrading. The problem with this is not in the software of SL, but in my present hardware configuration. :>) Before investing I would like some feed back as to the compatability with SL as this is the main program I use. As you know Nathan, my present configuration is a TT (32 TT ram, 4 ST ram), PCT 1426 color & TTM 195 monitors, and a Cannon flat bed scanner. Switching between the two monitors is very disconcerting, especially when I have a cusomer. So I'm looking for a high rez 17" or 19" color video. At the present time, as was previously posted, when I run SL in color I get noise tracks on the screen. Would this still happen with high rez color? I think Mario's configuration is similar to mine and he is not getting this video noise on his monitor. Am I right? It was also mentioned in CAT 7, Topic 28 that DMC is presently using a Microtek scanmaker(600dpi). From reading I guess that the software that is being used is TT compatable. Is that right and where is it obtainable ? Thanks, Bob P.S. Nathan ... any more info on the SIMMS? I still have good days and bad. As far as the Scanner Software is concerned there is a definate source for the Microtek Software ... US. We also have Software for the Agfa Arcus. As he posted earlier the noise problem only apperars with monstor programs like SL, Dynacadd ... etc , I get no noise with Calamus 1.09, Invision, Touch Up or Avant Vector.( I think Jim thought it may have something to do with the new placement of the GEsoft board) My question is, if I get a 24 bit card and new high rez monitor will this problem still be there ? and is there a solution to it since it has also been reported by at least 3 other people. It is, like yours, the Atari monitor. I don't get it on the mono. The noise only started after installing the GEsoft board with 32 megs and the Atari 8 meg ram boards. So far, no one has found a reason or answer to the problem, which is VERY annoying and VERY UGLY and VERY embarassing to show to a client! Especially a client that is used to looking at a nice Mac color display. I sure would like to know how to get rid of that 'noise'. Jim Allen of FAST TECH fame, has also seen it, as have a few others, so 'we' are not totally alone nor crazy. He suggested that it may be a 'flaw' in some TT's and that perhaps Atari should be informed. Please post any news you find about a cure. Thanks. PS. I thought, as Mario has suggested, monitor proximity to the CPU might be the cause, but that seems not to be so. Also, thought EMF and or 'line noise' might be it and tried a filter but no go. The filter, BTW, does kill line noise sucessfully, since I use it on a piece of very sensitive darkroom equipment. Anyway, neither of these solutions worked. Again, the noise was not there on my TT untill the ram upgrades were installed. However, now, even with the boards removed it still shows up. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 128 Fri Jan 29, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 06:34 EST Nathan: Did you get an answer regarding use of the Microtek Scanner on an ST system with an ICD AdSCSI Plus? If the 500C is prone to banding, that's good to know. I'm primarily curious as to how 24-bit Targa files (like those produced with Phoenix & Prism Render) look on these cheaper printers. In reviews I've read, there's never any mention as to how many colors are supported--It's stated that it's a function of the software (in my case that'd be Calamus). Nathan, you underestimate the value of your input :) If you think the Canon is better that HP, that's something. I've used the Kodak dye sublimation printer and a Tektronix Phaser wax transfer printer at work, so I certainly what to expect on those -- and no, I don't have that kind of money, The Tektronix Color Quick (around $2,200) looks pretty cool for graphics, but at 216 dpi I don't think it would serve for text very well. The Sharp JX700 at 180 dpi (approx. $1800) was tolerable. I just haven't the faintest idea what to expect from the Canon or HP. When I took the system into my dealer (yesterday) we did some testing and this is what happened. First we setup my system to make sure that it wasn't something coming from home. The noise was present so that ruled out something at home. Next we hooked up my PTC1426 to a different machince (DOS). Everything looked fine, no noise. When we hooked up a non-Atari monitor to my TT, the noise was still there but not as bad. Sorry, don't remember what the brand was. Last but not least we hooked up my monitor to a different TT. This was not really a far test. It did not have SL loaded on it but it seem to look cleaner though. Ringo ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 151 Sun Jan 31, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 15:08 EST Jim (and Nathan & Mario), The video noise is sort of a cross between a line and a bar, horizontially displayed. They are very light gray in color and kind of 'oscillate', not really moving up or down but just sort of 'vibrating' in place. They almost go away when the cursor is in a drop down menu box, but are otherwise constant. You don't see them on a dark colored screen (like a dark blue or black desktop) but they are VERY disturbing on a white page, ie. a typical SL page. I don't have another Monitor to try on the TT. Once again, they did not happen -before- installing the RAM upgrades, but once that was done they do remain, even if the RAM boards are removed. I too think it is something internal to the TT. Nathan, I agree it is time to 'Nail down' what is causing this noise and look forward to whatever you find. Like Jim Allen suggested, it may be something that Atrai needs to know about. I do harbour some fear over their response to the issue since it seems to involve the GEsoft board and 32 megs. Since this board is different in size and shape to their own 16 meg board I can already hear them saying "it's not our problem". But still, I'll hope for the best! %^) Lou, my TT was one of the earlier ones distributed by Atari Canada. I bought it from Sonny at Compuworld in Ontario, even though I live in California. I was told that it wasn't a good idea to send a resume with ALL the other papers that I had to fill out. But, I've really been brown nosing with my current boss. Their invetory and line up sheets were done with spreed sheet or a pen and a ruler, couldn't tell which. So, good old me, brought home the paper work and between 1am-3am and my 8 1/2 month old, I managed to redo the stuff for them. Yes, he was impressed. I guess that I should tell him that I do all my work on a toy computer, whoops, I mean on a 4 meg Atari 1040 STe running at 16MHz and Calamus SL, the best DTP program around. Gee, that just made me think. It's been a while now since I've used 1.09N. I found it through a review in one of the magazines (Publish or Personal Publishing or something similar). It's excellent. My copy must be an earlier printing/edition. I don't think I had a reply card. And the address shown at the end of the preface is the same except it says "c/o Kramer Communications". The book includes profiles of quite a few successful DTPer's, including Joel McIntosh, an educational consultant in Texas who uses (or used at that time) a Mega 4, an Atari laser printer, Calamus, and a Mac SE/30 and FileMaker. One of the appendices is titled "Resources" and provides healthy lists of other references, including general business books; books on small business & working at home; small business resources; books on marketing & selling; books on the business of graphics & DTP; DTP & graphics book clubs & sources; books on DTP & graphic design; magazines & catalogs; user groups, trade groups, & professional organizations; DTP & layout tools & supplies; and office & publishing supplies. That number's for order/account info. They also have an 800 number, I believe. But I don't have it handy right now. You typically get one book at half-price and one book free (from "the list", of course) to join. Then there's no further obligation other than returning the card each time. Maybe you can open a DTP business :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 184 Sun Apr 04, 1993 J.HICKEY6 at 15:56 EDT Nathan, I recently visited "Electronics for Imaging"(EfI), a San Mateo County CA based new venture in the "color publishing field". Their products Cachet(color editing software reviewed in MacUser March 1993) and Fiery(a Postscript RIP hardware interface for color copiers) and a color calibrating system for output devices and medium. They appear to be pushing the state-of- the-art. Their interface to the Canon CLC500 color copier(utilizing scanning and printing features)produces very impressive results. It would appear that Calamus SL and Retouche Professional are in the same league with this upstart. Since I only have Calamus SL, can you comment on it's ability to compete? Is Focoltone the "SL" way of handling the calibration problem? Is it as easy to use? Does it have "Gamut mapping" or some equivalent feature? Do you now have(or plan to have) the interfaces and/or drivers for the: Canon CLC 300, Canon CLC 500, Xerox 5775, Kodak XL7700, etc.? Jack BTW, EfI also works with Quark Xpress using EfiColor XTension. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 185 Mon Apr 05, 1993 G.GORMAN2 at 00:08 EDT Re: DMCFIX I don't know about your crashes. Glenn... ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 186 Mon Apr 05, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 00:18 EDT J.Hickey6, SL allows you to calibrate your output through the use of the gradient curves found in the Color Separation module. We also are working on a calibration software package to allow the automatic handling of recalibrating your output devices. (This is handled by using a test strip and then entering the readings from this strip into the program whch then generates the correct densities in a filter which can be applied using a special module we will be releasing shortly. Focoltone is a patented colour specification system designed for accurate colour specification at all stages of the production process. Hope this helps ... Most are oriented towards Mac's and DOS, of course, but there are a few generic titles included that someone may find interesting. Also a few training books for different programs, computer security systems, information systems management, and a few others. There's one on typography and one on spreadsheet layouts that some of the lurkers may find interesting. I'm going to get the spreadsheet one, and maybe the typography. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 188 Tue Apr 06, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 19:48 EDT Ken ... It's sitting on my desk, in the pile, still. ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 189 Sat Apr 10, 1993 P.MORALES1 [Pat] (Forwarded) Lou, Seeing as how you asked... First of all I'm a EE with 17 years (man, I must be getting old - NOT!) of hardware and software design experience. I must be one of a minority of defense engineers who still has a job in California. But then I know that I've been successful on every job that I've worked on over the years because I've never been afraid to work as hard as the job required. At this point, I'm mostly trying to learn to be a different kind of creative. Design of any kind and working to schedules is stressful. Playing around duplicating other people's efforts because I want to is an outlet for me. And right now, I'm learning some new skills. I own and have used most of the ST DTP programs. But for some reason, Calamus really did feel right even the first time I used it. No formal graphics/design training... but over the years I've been involved with Up With People and the Miss California Pageant and we did show programs. I find that my skills have allowed me implement other people's creative ideas. I guess we each need to know where out strengths lie. I'm really trying to develop as much of that creative spark as I can now. Color is probably in the future after I update from my 'old' reliable AdSpeed/Mega. I thought I was going to update sooner but the 20' Sea Ray in my back yard came first. Seems that my girl friend decided that I needed a different outlet first. You up for a little water skiing? Well, that's about it. Maybe as I improve my skills, I'll have what it takes for my next career when this one fizzles out all together. Until then, it'll be informal jobs just because I enjoy it. And heck, if Irag keeps firing at our aircraft (the news this am) maybe I can continue doing this stuff just because I enjoy it. Thanks for asking. Sorry if it got too long winded... Lasers, electro-optics, fiber-optics, electronic image converter cameras, I really had a ball. Last three years have been a sabattical for me. Honed those computer skills and applied them to political efforts to change "the status quo"(as in Tyranny of...by Milton Friedman). Calamus 1.09N and SL have played a major role in my efforts.(is this the right topic?) BTW, do you know Paul Sanfilipo from Redwood City? He's heavily involved in beauty pageants? Jack ------------ Category 16, Topic 24 Message 196 Sun Apr 11, 1993 P.MORALES1 [Pat] at 16:42 EDT Hi Jack, I'm in the LA area. I spent a couple of years in the Navy (71/72) doing every dirty job the POs could dream up. So I got out and went back to school. Those two year were the best thing that could have happened to me at that time in my life. No, I don't know Paul. I haven't been involved with pageants for several years now (I can't believe how time flies). But it was fun, and really rewarding, while it lasted. By the way, if you have been able to make a difference while dealing with the bureaucracy of the defense procurement system, I'm definitely impressed. Surfing, huh... I haven't tried it in years and I wasn't very good then. But I agree, I love the ocean. I'd miss it if I had to leave the area. Pat ...
