Enclosed are a number of text files concerning connecting a non-
Atari 3.5" disk drive to an ST. One, SGL2DBL.TXT, was written by me for the
Atari Interface Magazine, and concerns an upgrade of sorts -- how to connect
the drive if you've got an Atari single-sided drive to gut. (Or, looked at
another way, how to replace the single-sided mechanism with the double-sided
one.) The other major one, GENERIC.TXT, I pulled off of the Treasure Chest
BBS (313)973-9137. It contains instructions relating to adding a non-Atari
drive from scratch. Then there are two files with advice on a couple of
problems that you may run into (one of which was mentioned in SGL2DBL.TXT).
DISKCHNG.TXT relates to a problem with the "media change" signal on certain
drives. (Symptoms would be the desktop or an application being reluctant to
update a directory window or file selector box's contents.) DRIVSEL.TXT
deals with drive-select circuitry problems (symptoms would be a drive's
motor running but the system not recognizing it). This is mainly a problem
with 5.25" drives, but some 3.5" models might show similar behavior.

Note that I do not guarantee you can get these projects to work for
you; there are just too many variables, including the type of drive you use,
differences between your setup and mine, and mechanical aptitude. That said,
it shouldn't be too difficult to hook up an non-Atari drive to your ST, if you
don't rush things and pay attention to the instructions. Good luck!
