Curt ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 3 Fri May 28, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] (Forwarded) Curt, STalker might. I don't have a Falcon, but STalker obeys the rules and should work OK. Flash 1.6 breaks too many rules to run reliably on a Falcon. Flash II is being upgraded, in beta, for Falcon/MTOS compatibility. I'm probably not supposed to say that, as a beta tester; maybe the FII folks (Hi John!) will forgive me for plugging a not-yet-released product... ConNect is another possibility; have you tried it? It's German, as is StarCall. Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 4 Sat May 29, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) So what's the deal with Aladdin? No problem saying what you said. Flash II is being upgraded for the Falcon and MTOS right now and a free online upgrade will be available whenever the program is ready. In fact, Flash II version 2.1 will work under MTOS (although it's tricky) if you are running MTOS on a machine other than a Falcon (like a TT for instance). You have to twiddle with the program flags a bit though to get it to work. The Falcon is a bit trickier since Atari changed the hardware for Modem Port 1 on the Falcon. That means the current version of Flash II will run, but not talk to the serial port. We do have that working now and Flash II version 2.2(beta) runs on Falcons. If anyone has a Falcon and already owns Flash II 2.1, please contact me in email - I'm willing to send you a beta if you'd like. Aladdin won't work on the Falcon for the same reason that Flash II won't work on the Falcon. - the serial port hardware changes. Both Flash II and Aladdin control the MFP (serial) chip directly in order to extract the best speed and performance out of your modem. The Falcon now uses a Zilog SCC chip and we can no longer use the documented MFP interrupt routines for direct control. All telecom program now *must* use the OS for control of the serial port. It wasn't exactly the most "scientific" testing, but it does give you some info. Check the libraries and see what you can find out. It was uploaded several months ago. You're also correct that Pacific Software Supply was (is) doing a test of the software available on the Falcon as well. I believe that it is complete, but need to contact Peter Curry to be certain. regards, Bob Brodie ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 18 Mon May 31, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) If I had known that Falcon breaks Aladdin, I probably wouldn't have rushed out to buy a Falcon so quickly. The Modem 2 port does not have a Ring Indicator signal, Carrier Detect signal and a CTS signal hooked up. The lack of a CD signal makes it hard for Aladdin (the way it is done) to work properly. It is also hard to run a multiline BBS of of it. This is using the new SCC chip that is also in the Falcon. Can someone look in their Falcon owners manual and see if the above signals are hooked up. It would be a shame if Atari crippled the Falcon like they did the MSTE. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 21 Mon May 31, 1993 HUTCH [FAIR-DINKUM] (Forwarded) Just to make sure everyone knows, the latest versions of all Fair Dinkum Technologies' software are now Falcon030 compatible. Curt ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 46 Thu Jun 03, 1993 STEVE-J [Steve @ NLS] (Forwarded) One problem with Aladdin is that I believe ST Aladdin has its own serial port handler or somesuch (it doesn't use TOS calls for serial port handling), which is also why it takes the port 'hostage' whenever Aladdin is loaded. I believe Tim said this was done because using TOS wouldn't allow ST Aladdin to be written to GEnie's spec, but I don't know the whole story. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 47 Thu Jun 03, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] (Forwarded) Brian's right, if course. (I owe you this one, Brian) The subject of Falcon 030 compatibility is nothing to get all excited about yet. Yet. It would be expecting a LOT for every developer to have their updates ready at this early stage. Gregg ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 52 Fri Jun 04, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) Gregg you can use my comments. Especially if I say that a program does work on the Falcon or under Multitos. But don't take it as gospel if I say something _doesn't_ work because I may be doing something wrong or figure out a way to make it work later. For instance I _almost_ have Interlink running on the Falcon under Multitos now. I've found that if I run some other application like Talking Clock, first, then Interlink will run. But it is reacting very slowly and reluctantly to keypresses, making it still very impractical to use. Interlink seems to work pretty well as long as I use the ST High or Med Rez compatibility mode except that it doesn't seem to recognize when a call has been hung up, giving inappropriate messages when I try to quit about "Do you want to hang up first?" when I've already hung up. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 53 Fri Jun 04, 1993 AEO.7 [Gregg] (Forwarded) Thanks Dave, I'll wait until shortly before 'post time' to log on and update the go/nogo list from here. I am using Multitos version 4.0 with a release date of 2/16/93. Is this the version everyone has or is it a weird beta version? Connect isn't the only program that runs under Multitos on my STacy, runs ok on the Falcon w/o Multitos but dies on the Falcon when Multitos is installed. Am I doing something wrong to cause these "memory violations"? Can I fix them? ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 55 Sat Jun 05, 1993 J.STANFORD2 [John] (Forwarded) AEO: Here's an update on Falcon compatibility for the Lexicor products I've personally tested: Phoenix: Falcon compatible all 80 column & greater resolutions. (It might have a bug when run in true color modes, I forget.) Supports true color image preview on Falcon from any resolution. Will run in but doesn't like multi-tos (ie don't try to open other process windows.) A windowing multi-tasking Multi- Tos happy upgrade is nearing completion. Cyber Color: Falcon compatible all resolutions. No Multi-Tos Chronos: NOT Falcon compatible (Lexicor has stated elsewhere a Falcon compatible upgrade is in the works.) Prism Paint: Falcon compatible in all paletted resolutions. NOT Multi-tos compatible. Cyber Sculpt: Runs fine in ST-HI emulation mode only. This list may be edited and reprinted. DAVID: Try changing the program's memory flags to global using the program supplied with Multi-tos. If that doesn't work try turning memory protection in Multi- tos off with the CPX and reboot. The reason you're getting memory protection errors on the Falcon but not the Stacy is because only the 68030 allows memory protection. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 56 Sat Jun 05, 1993 BRIAN.H [ST~SysOp] (Forwarded) Dave, What version of MINT is it? I just ran a search on the keyword FPATCH and couldn't find it. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 62 Sun Jun 06, 1993 J.STANFORD2 [John] (Forwarded) Memory protection IS a good thing. It protects your other processes from being stomped upon by an errant application - causing them to crash and loose your work. It does this however by killing (terminating abruptly) the errant appliation. By errant application I mean one which is using portions of memory which it does not own or has requested access to. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 63 Sun Jun 06, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) Connect works on the Falcon. It dials just fine. UNTIL you try it under Multitos. With memory protection enabled the mouse will only move in a horizontal line and you can't get past the opening screen. With memory protection disabled everything works fine EXCEPT that the dialer doesn't dial. The Rufus Terminal program behaves exactly the same as Connect insofar as it refuses to dial under Multitos. D-Term works ok and dials in ST High mode - but not under Multitos. WIth or without memory protection - D-Term's mouse flickers, disappears and becomes generally ineffective, so I couldn't even get to the point of seeing whether it dials. Miniwin doesn't help. As I've said before Interlink works OK w/o Multitos except that it doesn't seem to recognize a hangup. With Multitos Interlink loads and runs if you disable memory protection and it even dials! But the bad news is that the keyboard becomes so unresponsive that the program is unusable. And as we all know by now Aladdin doesn't dial and Flash II doesn't work yet either. So far, as you can see, in my limited experience telecommunications on the Falcon sucks!!!!! Sure I know, everyone says just buy STalker. Well Stalker multitasks without the Falcon! I could have saved $1299! Atari Works needs a good terminal program! Someone mentioned a serial patch for the Falcon? Where is it? It's not here on GEnie. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 64 Sun Jun 06, 1993 J.NESS [Jim] (Forwarded) Here are some MultiTOS caveats that affect terminal programs. First, the memory protection. Most terminal programs written pre-MultiTOS enlarge the default RS232 I/O buffers. That's a requirement for high speed useage. Above 2400bps. Typically, the term programs tell TOS to use some of the term program's memory space for this larger buffer. So, in MultiTOS, the operating system is "invading" the memory space of the term program, causing the memory protection error. Thus, you have to turn off the protection, or make the term program memory "global" - available to all other applications - via a new PRGFLAG. Second, while it's always been true that GEM programs should not use BIOS (low- level TOS) calls for keyboard stuff, many programmers ignored that strong suggestion. In MultiTOS it's an absolute must. Any program that uses BIOS calls for keyboard stuff is going to have serious problems recognizing when a user has pressed a key. In MultiTOS, event_xxx calls must be used for that. -JN ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 65 Mon Jun 07, 1993 T.MCCOMB [=Tom=] (Forwarded) I would have thought they would have put it on everyones HD or Floppy backups. There's a bug in MiNT 1.0x (x <= 4) which can cause the mouse to not work correctly in non-ST modes with certain programs. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 68 Mon Jun 07, 1993 C.FLUEGEL [Curt] (Forwarded) for those who haven't dled the program (forget the name, it uncompresses to FS.PRG) to increase the Falcons rez, do so. It actually works real well on SVGA and Multisync monitors. Curt ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 69 Tue Jun 08, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) Eric, believe me, I've tried every compatibility mode possible on Connect and D-Term. The mouse bugs occurs also in ST high. It is becoming obvious that someone needs to write a good, simple, Multitos compatible, shareware terminal program for the Falcon. If even STalker violates memory protection, then there is apparently no existent terminal program which follows all the rules. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 70 Tue Jun 08, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) Curt, does the program work on the NEC 3D Multisync? The warnings about ruining your monitor scared me off. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 71 Tue Jun 08, 1993 J.NESS [Jim] (Forwarded) David - STalker works, and Flash II has a compatible version in beta test. For the problem of creating a larger I/O buffer, STalker has always used an AUTO program, rather than using its own memory. So, the AUTO program just has to be set up with the PRGFLGS to have global memory. Also, since STalker has always been fully GEM-compliant, it does keyboard input the recommended way. Basically, any term program still being updated is being modified to work with MultiTOS. It's the older ones that have problems. Alan Page's Storm would have been compatible, if he'd been able to finish it before he had to take on a conflicting assignment. Beta copies worked fine, and all he had left to do was finish up the built-in BASIC implementation. If you're planning to use MultiTOS on any machine slower than a TT, I'd warn you that 2400bps is the max speed you'll get away with. MultiTOS slows things down a lot. The machine simply won't be able to efficiently handle fast data rates. There'll be LOTS of flow control intervention. Same thing people have complained about with Windows-style multitasking for years. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 72 Tue Jun 08, 1993 DARLAH [RT~SYSOP] (Forwarded) Jim: Alan Page told me via telephone that after Double Click left the market, he wasn't aware of what was going to happen to Storm. I was quite concerned as I thought the program had potential. After getting involved, I found out via Mike at Double Click that Neil Symes had taken over the rights of the program but after talking to Alan, he had no idea. To the best of my knowledge, he still has not heard and thus this placed the program in limbo. He told me on our last conversation that he does wish to straighten this out and finish the program. I am hoping that this confusion gets resolved. You may not be aware though that he was working on Storm and another job at the same time. It is called eating and multitasking. I am sure you can relate to that. I certainly can! ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 73 Tue Jun 08, 1993 J.NESS [Jim] (Forwarded) Darlah - No, I wasn't aware that Double Click had transferred their Storm rights to someone else. That's interesting. I did know that Alan went to work for Ditek, when his personal cash ran out, and that he said that he hoped to someday get back to Storm. From what I saw in the beta versions, the program had terrific potential. Designed to be entirely GEM, GDOS, and MultiTOS compliant. A rich implementation of Basic, for use normally as a navigating language, but useful for other purposes. Plenty of file xfer protocols. Good competition for STalker and Flash II. -JN ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 74 Tue Jun 08, 1993 DARLAH [RT~SYSOP] (Forwarded) I too thought it had good potential. Duane ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 82 Tue Jun 15, 1993 GRIBNIF [Dan] (Forwarded) David, STalker is definitely not an "orphan". One way or another there will be updates to it. Eric, Gribnif Software, and another party are working on getting the rights to the code transferred around to make this possible. By the way, the only place where STalker "breaks the rules" is when it communicates with STeno and vice-versa. In this case, you do need to have memory protection set to "global" for both programs. This could be changed, but the only way of doing so would also break EdHack's communication with STalker. Even so, it is something we are considering. I begged them to reconsider and they said they would "note" my concerns, but they wouldn't even start working on a fix before this Fall at the earliest! Aaaarggghhhh! The funny thing is that although Band in a Box bombs in ST High and ST Medium, you can actually get it to run and play music in 256 color and 16 color 80 column modes. But the screen is all messed up to hell making it impractical to work with that way. Aaaaarrrrgghhh! Not very good news for what is supposed to be a musician's dream computer. I was able to load, modify, and save several files (no way to print test though, no printers handy). It does have a tendency to not recognise all available RAM. On a four meg Falcon it tended to trash a really large graphic during rotation if I added one too many CPXs.... However, I understand that the Migraph Hand Scanner/TouchUp combination does have a problem wit hthe Falcon. Something about 'garbage' on the screen during scans. Has anyone been able to test/verify this yet? Finally, there's not been a lot of new products for the Atari coming out of Migraph lately... sales for their Atari products just haven't been that strong for them despite some really excellent products. This is especially obvious on the 'new product' list. Migraph just shipped a new COLOR scanner for the Amiga line called 'Colorburst'. I hear it's an 18-Bit system... Is there a Colorburst coming out for the Falcon? Not yet, I'm afraid. However.... a little bird whispered in my ear that it wouldn't take very long to port the Colorburst (and other) system over to the Falcon IF enough units are sold to make it worthwhile. So let's get those Falcons moving folks ... you know what the worst thing about having a little bird whisper something in your is? That mess they always leave on your shoulder... YUCK!!!! Enjoy; Gregg ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 96 Sat Jun 26, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] (Forwarded) Two out of 3 Dr. T's music programs I tried to run today on a Falcon 030 would not work in ST High resolution 256 color mode. The two were Omega and The Copyist DTP. Both are the latest versions but I know that Omega 2 is just about to be released. The third was XoR which worked fine but keep in mind that this was a beta test version that is also about to be released. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 97 Mon Jul 05, 1993 C.OINES1 [Chazz] (Forwarded) Well... Opus 2.2 crashes out, and takes almost all the RAM with it. Guess I'll be keeping my STe for a while yet ;) Sudden View works from ST High and ST Medium without glitches. Cybersculpt works from ST High without problems, and works from ST Medium until you try to display the object's palette, which bombs it out. It also works from 640x400x16 mode, so long as you don't use 3D Preview (bombs on returning) or the palette. Crack Art _almost_ works, which pleases me greatly; I use Crack Art to generate image maps for Phoenix (save as PI1 and use a PI1 to GIF converter, or load them into Spectrum 512 and save out as a *.SPC). Most of it works great (even the floppy light trick), but it bombed out when I clicked on the Rotate Block function. So as long as you don't do that, it works fine from ST Low mode, and the speed increase from the STe is noticeable and wonderful. Pick up the whole screen as a block and move it around without the slightest flicker! It'll probably crash if you load a spectrum and try to select an area for it to pick the color map from. RayOid runs with no sound and perfect smoothness, but freezes the desktop when you quit out. I haven't played with any of the above under MultiTOS, since 4 megs is already cramped enough for my needs... maybe when I've got a 14-meg card, but not before. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 98 Mon Jul 12, 1993 P.LOUIE1 (Forwarded) David, I tried Band-in-a-Box on my dealer's Falcon and it seems to work in 2 color 80 column mode. Actually, STraight FAX! has been compatible since version 1.06, which was released just after we received our developer Falcon030 computer. Earlier versions of STraight FAX! will run on the Falcon030, but can not communicate with the Falcon030's Modem Port to send or receive FAX documents. Users that still have versions of STraight FAX! 1.05 and below can get an update from our support BBS (Toad Computers BBS) for free by requesting the update via private E-Mail on the BBS. STraight FAX! 1.07 also takes advantage of the 3D objects available on Falcon TOS 4.02 and higher and with MultiTOS release 1.00 or higher (on any computer model). Falcon030 users with TOS 4.04 or below should install the FPATCH1.PRG available from Atari (which is in the ST File Library). This patch is required to correct problems with the serial port handlers in TOS. STraight FAX! 2.0, which will be released very soon takes advantage of even more features of the new AES on the Falcon030 and in Multi-TOS. Version 2.0 will use hierarchical menus on the menu bar and will allow up to 8 windows when used with the new AES versions. Version 2.0 will also take advantage of the new Iconifier window gadget that will be available in a future TOS/MultiTOS release. This new gadget appears to the left of the Fuller gadget and will cause a window to shrink to a small icon sized window. The icon sized window can then be returned to its original size by double-clicking on its work area. The icon sized window may be dragged around the screen and topped like a normal window. Note: Registered STraight FAX! users can get the version 1.07 update by request from the Toad Computers BBS (410-544-6999, 300-14400 baud, allow up to 60 seconds to make a connection) by sending private E-Mail to the sysop, with your name, address and registration number. The update will be sent to your account on the BBS as F-Mail within a few days. Charles @ NewSTar ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 141 Wed Aug 11, 1993 AEO.7 [Gregg] (Forwarded) Yes.. You'd have to call Mighraph to be sure. They are working on a MONOCHROME scanner upgrade that will work with ALL Atari systems, Falcon included. They told me that there is a hardware problem with the current Scanner interface on the Falcon.... that the problems are HARDWARE rather than software (rats!). I've used TouchUp on the Falcon in several video modes and generally it works just great. It does seem to be a touch RAM funny though.... On a 4Meg Bird it tended to mess up a large .IMG file when rotating it. That demands a LOT of memory to work right but unless I kill a .CPX or two it tended to scramble part of the picture when rotating. Mine gives me nothing but wavy lines, kind of like I think it would appear if you were looking down on William Shatners head when he forgot his rug. You know, thin lines few and far between. MIGRAPH tells me they can do nothing about it because Falcon rewired the cartridge port and made odd to even and vice-a-versa so ANYTHING that works with the ST will not with the Falcon. Life is hell, hey. Anyway, the good news is that MIGRAPH is coming out with a Falcon comptable (specific?) FULL COLOR scanner. You will just need a new cartridge, hand scanner and software. But, I tell myself, that is the price we pay to be the first on the block. Oh, by the way. M-TOS and Geneva would not load at all (screen was really funny). Re-formatted with HDX (5.03c) with a partion scheme of GEM, BGM, BGM. This produced problems after about half an hour with what normally can be cured by installing folderxx. However, this did no good so I tried the ICD booter again but this time did not set the video. Booting the Falcon from the same floppy (bypassing the hard drive) causes the spooler to sometimes show up in the acc list, but it won't work. Other times I get two bombs. Loading in the spooler from the desktop gives me a message that it couldn't create the spool file. Is there any way something in the Falcon Hardware could have been messed up? Who would want to run DC without a coprocessor anyway??? ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 203 Thu Dec 23, 1993 S.WINICK at 05:51 EST CBARRON, DynaCADD-2D is identical in function to DynaCADD-3D except for the 3D wireframe functions. DynaCADD-2D also does not require that damn joystick port protection key that is most irritating on the 3D version (go figure!). And best of all, 2D is only about 1/4 the price of 3D! Both versions will benefit incredibly from a math coprocessor (FPU) which is highly recommended. Installing an FPU in the Falcon is a real easy task (but should be done by an authorized Atari service center if your computer is still under warranty so as not to void the warranty). However, installing IC's is NOT something that should be done by the typical end user who isn't properly trained in how to handle sensitive electronic components. At the present time, DynaCADD-3D does NOT run on the Falcon, either with or without an FPU present. If you need DynaCADD to run on your Falcon, get the 2D version for now, and plan on upgrading to 3D as soon as Ditek produces a revised version that will be Falcon compatible. Might be a 'serious' user replacement for the 'lost in action' TT's. ------------ Category 30, Topic 4 Message 206 Thu Dec 23, 1993 S.WINICK at 07:48 EST Joey, Well, Ditek didn't say anything to me so far about a Falcon compatible version of DynaCADD-3D. I know the version I have won't work; I remember trying it as soon as the Falcon came in last summer and talking to Ditek about it. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------
