Be welcome in our humble home. 203 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 1 Tue Jul 27, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 19:52 EDT Released in February, 1992, Calamus SL has proven to be a first class desktop publishing solution for the Atari platform. Compatible with all Atari computers, from a 1 meg 520 ST to the TT030 to the latest Atari Falcon030, Calamus displays in a variety of resolutions on all available graphic cards in 1, 4, 8 and 24/32 bit color or monochrome, above 640 x 350 resolution. Calamus SL is the centre of a modular universe, based on the WYNIWYG (What you need is what you get) concept. A great many optional modules are currently available with more scheduled to arrive shortly. Additional topics in DMC's Category 16 can be listed by typing TOPic. For those of you enjoying Calamus, whether professional or just for fun, all the topics in this Category will be of interest. A complete list of Calamus' features can be found in our own library 30: file #27367 compares Calamus 1.09N to Calamus S, #17426 compares 1.09 to everything a few years back, as did file #16892, #10521 is a 20 page list of Calamus 1.09N and Calamus SL features. A series of archived files of questions asked and answered in this Category from the initial release of Calamus up to and including messages archived last week, can be found and downloaded from the Atari RT Archive library #13. Just SEArch by the keyword Calamus. The Calamus 1.09 DEMO version is file #10521 while the Calamus SL DEMO version is file #24683. The Calamus Printer Driver Generator is also available for downloading, file #24135. As always, there are many of us that would be pleased to answer any question related to Calamus and desktop publishing on the Atari. Believe me, between those of us at DMC and the many 100's of customers of ours that also enjoy Category 16, we can usually handle about anything you can throw at us and remember, no question is too simple or too hard. Please do not hesitate to ask. Sincerely Nathan Potechin DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 2 Fri Dec 31, 1993 F.ZIMMERMAN3 [Frank Z.] at 20:32 EST Lou, 1) What kind of RAM board did you use to allow you to put the extra ST RAM in? 2) What reasons prompted you to use ST RAM instead of TT RAM? Actually, Calamus SL is the only program I'm currently running that could really use more than 4 megs of RAM. But I am also thinking of adding Geneva, and I don't want to face all those "insufficient memory" messages! I am interested in what would be the best route considering that the RAM upgrade is primarily for SL's use. I don't use my computer in a business, so ultra-fast speed is not a big factor. Price is certainly one of my main considerations, but I don't want to get something that will be inadequate in the future either. How much is the GE Soft board? What I have in mind is a board that can accept either ST or TT RAM up to about 20 Megs, and allow the user to plug in the extra chips as he needs or can afford them. Am I dreaming, or is such a thing available? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 3 Fri Dec 31, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 21:20 EST The GE soft products are reliable. We've been using various models of them for almost 2 years. Even better though, Cybercube is working on a memory expansion board as well and they only know how to make high quality products. And even best, the upcoming RAM expansion board from Cybercube is estimated to be somewhere around $300. The 32 meg GE Soft board, empty, is $400. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 4 Sat Jan 01, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 00:34 EST Frank, I chose ST RAM because Calamus runs it system file and its DMA imaging for my SLM printer in ST RAM. As for RAM boards, etc... that is not my forte. I'll leave that question to Nate and the techno-fiends. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 5 Sat Jan 01, 1994 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 13:46 EST In using the GEM IMG printer driver, I can't get it to print stable output at anything higher than 250dpi. I'm printing a 1/3 US letter page (8 1/2 by 3 2/3) using the layout button and a large page size. At 300 dpi a few parts of the page will become garbled with horizontal lines, with the image seemingly "streched" in areas. As the printing resolution goes up, the image gradually gets worse and worse, with the damage being the exact same no matter how many times I try printing it after reboots, dumping modules, etc. This sounds to me like the image compression routine is failing somewhere, but that is pure speculation. This will all be very much moot after I get my latest order, but this project is quickly approaching deadline, although I suppose there are less convienient ways around this. Sean Dougherty Two Worlds Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 6 Sat Jan 01, 1994 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 18:30 EST Nathan, ...you are absolutely correct about the F keys calling the modules properly no matter what order the modules are loaded in! I stand corrected. My comments about that being a problem stemed from a long time back when I do recall noticing it, but it seems to be now working beautifully. I just haven't checked it out since the 'early days'. %^) Thanks! Thanks also for the ST fax info. ********* Lou, about the VM limit problem. See, it -used- to be that we could set a VM size limit in the Sys. parameters, right? So, for example, I could set up a folder on one partition and limit VM to 2 megs. If SL then needed some VM it would use only that folder and if it didn't find enough memory there it would keep swaping out what it needed. Most often this would work, rarely it just ran out of memory, period. ...But there were two distinct advantages. (1) SL didn't trash a whole partition if it needed more memory than it found and... (2)since there was a small size limit on the VM (changeable at anytime, BTW) it didn't lock into one of those 'all night' sessions of VM use... (you know the ones that can occur during printing where hours go by watching the VM spinner spin!) So... I would dearly love to see the 'old' way of being able to assign a VM limit restored to us. Still, this has nothing to do with way SL uses only ST Ram for font and most module loading. On a lino machine it seems that a minimum of 2 megs of ST Ram has to be kept free for printing. Even with 10 megs on a TT the remaining 8 or less available megs of ST ram can get used quickly with larger files. I only mention it becaused I've experienced it! BTW, since VM has been implemented in the 'new' partition specific mode, I keep it turned off too!!! I don't care to reformat my drives to provide a - safe- partition just for SL's VM. ******* Ken, ...thanks for the info about ST fax printer driver. I guess what I was thinking about was that the driver could call up the file selector in the same was that the GEM_IMG printer driver does. I see a potential problem though with creating a 'set' of *.J0? fax files from say a 10 page SL doc..... as it now stands this can be done in one stroke and the pages will be named, Calpage.J01, J02, etc. I would prefer to be able to chose my own name for the fax files such as MY_FAX01.___, and then let the driver assign the .J01, J02, etc. to the various pages. Your info is however a step in the right direction! Thanks again. **** Frank. Z, Lou and Nathan.... Frank was asking about ST Ram on a TT! ...not TT RAM on a TT... The TT comes with 2 megs of ST Ram on the motherboard. Beyond that you can add ST ram board to increase that to 4 megs. and/or (if you can find the board) to 10 megs. Both these boards are Atari only as far as I have ever seen. Neither of them have anything to do with the GE Soft board or anyother TT Ram boards. They are separate issues. It seems that the larger ST Ram boards are -very- hard to come by. It took one of the Atari 'big wigs' almost a year to get me one and he had to get it direct from Germany ...and he couldn't get two! This would be an interesting place for a third party developer to look into!!! Perhaps (JIM ALLEN ...where are you?) even more ST Ram can be added to a TT and we don't know it!?!?!!! ****** ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 7 Sat Jan 01, 1994 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 18:50 EST Will future versions use the FPU? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 8 Sat Jan 01, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 19:57 EST Sean, the garbage you are describing also appears on printouts when there is not enough RAM. Have you checked your Statistics before trying to print to disk? I don't have version 2.0 of ST Fax, wonder if this has changed. Maybe you ought to request it. It is a nice idea, especially if you had two SL docs that you wanted to fax to diff people. It would be easily identifiable that way. Or I guess, as a work around, batch renaming would be possible. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 10 Sat Jan 01, 1994 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 23:11 EST Lou: > Have you checked your Statistics before trying to print to disk? Any > have you tried Dataformer or Bridge? I've got approximately 960k of RAM and 9000k of VM just prior to saves, and that's prior to dumping modules. The area I'm trying to print is 2550x1100 (in pixels, of course) which would take 350625 bytes for imaging, somewhat more if Calamus or the IMG format requires line widths to be a multiple of 16 (352000 bytes in that case). In either case I've still got plenty of RAM left over. Also, I did set my working area margins to zero and no crop/registration marks. As to trying Bridge, I'd love to, but it's not here, yet. :) Once it is, I suspect my problems will be over. Since I don't use the driver much, I tried it with other pages and the same thing happens on nearly any page I try, no matter the page size. At 250dpi it works fine, at 300dpi things begin to mess up. It messes up most on lines with a higher density of black pixels which is what seems to backup the conclusion that the compression routine in the driver is faulty. I'm going to try out a few things, dumping auto programs, CPX's, and so forth. If I get it working, I'll post. Also, the Falcon8 patch in 256 colors leaves behind the frame dragging thingies. Nothing big, Clr-Home fixes the problem, posting just in case everyone thought it was so insignificant that no one posted it. :) Sean Dougherty Two Worlds Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 11 Sat Jan 01, 1994 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 23:33 EST Lou: I dumped auto programs, ACC's, and flipped to ST HIGH making 1647kb of RAM and 9038kb of VM and *still* it insists on choking... Consequently, when printed at A4/300 dpi there was some garbage in the IMG file. (2) When your file was output at A5/300, part of the CDK was cut off because the A5 size was a little smaller than your page layout. However, the file was clean. (3) Your file at 300 dpi using BRIDGE was clean. I have sent that back to you in email. Conclusions: (a) The GEMIMG.CDT is having a problem with the A4 (letter) size. (b) Buy the BRIDGE module :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 18 Mon Jan 03, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 15:23 EST Please ask Cybercube directly concerning current information about their proposed expansion board. They do check in regularly to topic 12 right here in category 16. Mario uses an 8 meg ST RAM board. Atari originally produced a 2 meg or 8 meg ST RAM expansion board. Shawn has a 2 meg ST RAM board in his TT while Mario has the 8. It depends on your needs. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 19 Mon Jan 03, 1994 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 18:43 EST Lou: Thanks much for your work. As I said, the whole thing would be very moot after I get Bridge out of the hands of the postal service (assuming it's been mailed), or once I get my hands on a good IMG. What can I say other than the fact it's moot now. :) I did find a work around though, and that was to rotate the 1/3 page 90 degrees so that it was taller than wide. I printed it using the normally just smaller than needed size, hit print and much to my surprise actually worked. It took longer than it sounds though because I tried a page size or two before hand that didn't work. In any event, it only requires rotating it back with another program and saving it out. Again, thanks for your work and the IMG, Lou. I *can* set it, but if I access the file selector Calamus 'freezes' (i.e. the file selector looks messed up and then the program crashes). I've tried also sorts of variations and the same thing happens. Funny thing is, Reformat Document updates the time showing am or pm, but accessing the file selector ends things for me. I read the User-to-User document for the System Parameters module available here on GEnie, but it doesn't go into much detail about the *exact* syntax. The only thing I could change correctly was from 24 hour to 12 hour time format. << Neil >> ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 27 Fri Jan 07, 1994 N.ROUGHLEY [Neil] at 07:23 EST I had a last-minute thought after posting and tried something: I turned the Calamus file selector off and used TOS's. I don't remember getting any kind of answer. Is there a way to do this. I have a Moniterm and an SM147. I remember seeing someone do it at one of the earlier Glendale shows. It would be nice to have the icons in the smaller monitor where they would be easier to use and have the full screen on the moniterm. I remember seeing the pointer go back and forth between the two monitors seamlessly also. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Steve Lou, Irregardless of how much Ram I start out with, when SL boots the Bermuda clock drops the available ram down to 128kb. Is that normal, or do I have one of my settings wrong somewhere? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 29 Fri Jan 07, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 17:29 EST Neil, there is a bug in the Time settings for the SYS PARAM module. If I recall, it has something to do with a style for setting seconds. I will take a look again and get back to you. Steve, I find the same thing using other utilities. I can't say for sure but it looks like SL grabs all the RAM available. The System RAM is used for system functions, like printing, file access, etc. but not for data, font storage, etc. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 30 Fri Jan 07, 1994 Y.DUFRESNE [Y.Dufresne] at 22:02 EST Lou and Steve: SL does indeed take all available memory and leaves only an amount specified in the Sys Param. module. Dan Wilga says that SL does very strange things in allocating its memory. If you need more free memory, specify some other amount in the Sys module, save setup and reload. Be sure that you don't specify an amount so big that SL could not run. Be also aware that this amount is in BYTES and not in KBYTES. It would be a good idea to make a back- up copy of your CALAMUS.SET file just in case you set the amount of mem SL leaves out too big. Yanick @ CGA ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 31 Sat Jan 08, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 07:48 EST The two-monitor function was never activated in Calamus SL, Steve. We used to use it with Calamus 1.09N and switch back and forth if you were working on the SM124 and wanted to see a large IMG on the larger monitor. The specific Moniterm models I have dealt with are the Viking 2/91 manufactured in 1988/89. Don't ask me about the ones used with the MEGA-ST, I don't know. I suspect, however, that they may require changes in the horizontal scan rate. Do you have a lot of the MEGA-Moniterms either "in-house" or in your customer base? Does US$50 sound reasonable for a first article? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 40 Tue Jan 11, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 19:36 EST Actually, I was asking for my own personal use... at least until my AlberTT cable is ready. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 41 Wed Jan 12, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 10:06 EST A steady stream of people bought the Moniterm moniters for their Mega ST, myself included. Then Moniterm lowered their price from US $1895 to $995 on that monitor and another 4 dozen or so people immediately took advantage of the savings. I've know idea how many people own Mega ST4's and Moniterms but I'll guess it is about 100. I also want a cable so that I can plug my Moniterm into my TT if I should wish to do so. I have a Viking 2/91. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 42 Thu Jan 13, 1994 J.HICKEY6 at 11:18 EST Lou and Nathan, If you can get the pinouts of the Moniterm 9-pin connector, I will make up a cable for you(is 1 meter long enough?) My cable has a dual output, and a switch to go from TT high Res to multisync. I suspect you don't need anything so elaborate, and my cost would be less.(about half) The fact that your Moniterm is a Viking 2/91 is encouraging. What was the date of manufacture? The two I have were Mf'd in 87 and 88, and, after tweeking internal adjustments, they both work perfectly. If you don't have the pinout data(i.e. ECL video pins, voltage out, H&V sync, ground), a multi meter probing will suffice. Volts to shell(ground) for ECL is -1 to -2 volts. The voltage out(not required by the TT, but hazardous to its health) is >-8volts. Those must be measured with the monitor "on". The H & V inputs can not be readily identified, so I will assume they are the same as mine unless your probing shows that to be wrong. Grounded pins can be found by checking for 0 ohms(resistance) from pin to shell). The power seems awfully shaky. Do you have a recommendation regarding brand/model? Or ... what's the criteria to judge by? Maximum number of watts output? (Seems that it ought to be amps, but I don't know that stuff!) My TT is 95 watts; TTM195 is 100; PTC1426 doesn't say. Seems that even with an external CD-ROM player (I'm wishing) I'd be covered by one of the smaller units. I've seen some advertised in the $100 to $150 range that LOOK like they might do (including the APC Model 250). -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 65 Fri Jan 21, 1994 C.ALLEN17 [Cliff] at 22:17 EST Dumb question number one of the new year: I have again begun to play with SL and and came across a problem with the GEMIMG.CER (dated 03/07/92). Cliff (Ashevillite) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 66 Sat Jan 22, 1994 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 00:10 EST To follow up on my UPS comments (which may not belong here ... but _WILL_ help keep Calamus running when your neighbors are all standing outside checking to see if it's just THEIR power that's out) ...... The power requirements can be specified in either Watts, Volts, or Volt- Amperes. The "APC Back-UPS" units have model numbers that specify the number of Volt-Amperes that can be safely handled. Example, the APC-450 can handle 450VA. They sell a 250, 400, 450, 600, 900, etc. Since the equiment to be protected usually states the power requirements in terms of the MAXIMUM required, you can probably get by with a smaller UPS unit than what you'd calculate that you'd need. To convert ... [Watts * 1.40 = VA] [Amps * 120 = VA; for 120 volt. Use 240 otherwise.] So, my 95-watt TT030 and 100-watt TTM195 together require (max) 195 watts ... or 270+VA. I could probably get by with the APC-250 unit. I'd probably get the 400 or 450 unit to cover other devices and give me a little longer backup time. And the APC-250 is right around $100 to $120 (US, mail-order). Even the APC- 450 is under $200. -- Harry p.s. Don't connect your laser printer to the UPS. (:{ Grouch. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 69 Sat Jan 22, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 20:55 EST Here's what I'd do: First of all, don't get elegant. Just place your two graphic frames in the appropriate position. Then start your first text column under the first picture. Whenever I have 2 columns side by side I use absolute line spacing to insure the text matches by the way. Then create your second text frame. To pipe text from the first frame to the second go to the frame module to the text sub-menu. I think it's the far right icon, 3rd from the bottom, The icon help message says something like "piping from frame to frame". Activate the first text frame. Then click on this icon and click on the second text frame. This will create a piping chain from the first to the second frame and automatically flow into the second frame any text overflow from the first text frame. Once I had both the text frames the way that I wanted them, I would use a single text ruler to create a right indent for the text at the bottom of the second text frame to have it line up to the desired location to the left of the graphic frame. All you have to do is place your I-Beam cursor, while in text mode, in the appropriate location in your text and insert a new text ruler. Then, while insuring that no icons are activated in the text ruler function i.e.; TABs, click and drag on the right indent icon in the text ruler until it is in your desired position. That's it. I hope this helps. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 70 Sat Jan 22, 1994 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 23:40 EST A friend called me with a problem importing a 1st-Word+ file. He can view the complete file in PKS-Write. But he only gets the 1st 2 or 3 paragraphs in the text frame itself. The rest doesn't appear anywhere. I suggested he save an ASCII file from 1st-Word+, which he did. That file imported OK. It appears in its entirety in the text frame. Is there a 1st-Word+ import problem? I could have missed it easily since I don't let ALL the comments here soak in when they don't seem to apply to me. He has the 11/93 version of SL. -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 71 Sun Jan 23, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 08:34 EST I am not aware of a 1st Word+ problem. Perhaps your friend can send us the 1st Word+ file to test here or maybe even you take a look at it. Look for long lines without a break, as in a deliberate underline ---------------------- type thing etc.. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 72 Sun Jan 23, 1994 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 12:04 EST I 've seen this problem of missing paragraphs during imports not only from first word but also word perfect from IBM. When I see this problem I have always found that if the text is brought into the text editor and at the last place you saw a line on the screen you hit a return and then return the text to the screen all the text will appear. As Nathan said it's usually an unbroken text string, but sometimes it seems to be a hidden control character embeded into the imported file that doesn't seem to show up in SL. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 73 Sun Jan 23, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 12:13 EST Grouch, your ASCII art file got mangled so I am not sure if I am misunderstanding your question. If you are trying to flow text around a graphic, you should use the FLOW TEXT AROUND GRAPHIC functions in the Special Functions command area of the Frame Module. Rather than go into a lengthy explanation here, I will refer you to the manual. If that does not help you, please ask for further help here. In the manual refer to [5.5.2.7]; you might also check [5.5.2.5] and [5.5.2.6]. For information about piping text through frames, see [5.5.2.8]. Harry, the problem with saving an ASCII file is that hard spaces are inserted to lock all the words together; in addition, either soft or hard line ends appear at the end of each line. This ensures that the formatting is maintained when reading or printing ASCII files from the desktop. If you friend saved out an ASCII file, is it possible he then tried to import it using the 1stWord driver? In this case, each line in the file would be imported as very long, single text string made up of words locked together by hard spaces. If this is true, he he can still use the file. Go to the text editor and use the Search and Replace function to remove the hard spaces and insert only normal spaces. To do this, use the ASCII entry method.... on the Search line hold down the [ALT] key and type 5; on the Replace line type a normal space. You would also have to remove all the line ends. If they are soft line ends (a grey down arrow), put [ALT]23 on the Search line and a space on the Replace line. If all your line ends are hard paragraphs, put [ALT]10 on the Replace line and a space on the Replace line; then choose SOME and SKIP the replacement where you want to _keep_ paragraph ends. BTW, Stephen Samuels recently uploaded a new USER file called NICEASCI which contains a chart of all the control codes that can be inserted, searched and replaced inside PKS. This handy reference will also be included in Volume 4 of USER to USER. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 74 Sun Jan 23, 1994 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 16:12 EST NATHAN/BOB, When he was still using the Word+ file, he looked in PKS Write but didn't see anything "funny". I got him to delete some of the text surrounding the place where it had stopped. He still only got it to display up to that point. But if it was because of a long line, then he may have deleted only a portion of that line. I'll get him to try that out (to delete the entire line ... or to insert a hard return) and see what happens. LOU --- The 1st Word+ file he started with wasn't an ASCII file. I just got him to try saving it as an ASCII file to see whether he could get the whole thing into SL. (He was kinda frustrated at the time.) Thanks, -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 75 Sun Jan 23, 1994 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 17:18 EST Nathan (and all), In response to your request, I'll give a brief (?) rundown of my SL seminarat the ToadFest. FYI, the ToadFest was a "replacement" for the missing East Coast AtariFest in Reston, Virginia. Let me preface this by thanking Lou and Mario for supplying me info on areas of Calamus that make it unique compared to other packages on other platforms. I didn't really know what I was actually going to cover in the seminar because there was so much to SL that was worth mentioning. I finally decided to highlight the basic system and setup, with concentrations on what I thought were the best features of each module, including many of the items given to me by Lou and Mario. Without them it surely would not have been as successful as it turned out. Initially, I had some apprehensions. How many people would actually show up at the ToadFest, much less at my seminar? Then I worried that I couldn't represent the program well enough, that I might give misinformation about it, etc., etc. I prepared for all potential scenarios with samples of my work, sample demonstrations, etc., to really show off what SL could do. I didn't want to get too complicated, because of the various experience levels I would probably encouunter. About 20-25 people showed up at the seminar, with one guy even videotaping the event. IMHO, this was a good turnout. I began explaining the basic system and setup parameters and what I felt was a key advantage to SL over everything else, and that was the modularity of the interface. Other platforms are far more cumbersome in the way they approach this, with SL you can load/unload on the fly. Another key was the far- reaching configurability of SL, far more extensive than other layout programs. As I went through each basic module, I explained many of the great features of SL, including the very powerful text functions within the text module and PKS Write. I also included those modules that were with the last upgrade at that time. I showed some of the graphic-based features of SL, using the Raster Generater, Control Line, Linearity, and FOCOLTONE. Once I got beyond the basics, (time constraints wouldn't allow me to do it all), I showed off some of the other modules such as DataFormer (if only I had BRIDGE then), Mount, Toolbox, Clipboard, Brush, Color Separaration. Many of these I could only touch on, because of time constraints. During all this, I was able to field questions. No one tried to play "stump the band" or anything like that (*whew*). I was even able to dispel any concerns on film output by telling them of the 1 day turnaround by DMC on output. Anyhow, by the end, I felt that no one left with anything but pride in SL, particularly me. Not that it should feel otherwise, but let's face it, the way Atari deals with things, many a user has moved to other platforms. It was my intention to demonstrate we can do whatever the others can do, and then some. My feelings were justified when I had so many people stop me after it was over to ask questions, shoot the bull, etc. It was a lot of fun. I did videotape the seminar, for my own purposes, but haven't looked at it yet, so I'm sure I missed some things. Basically, I wish you were there. Nathan, maybe next year.... He used them to help clean up the ASCII file he had imported. But he was never able to get the imported 1st-Word+ file to display properly in the text frames. Tried inserting hard returns. Didn't work. I _DID_ find out, though, that the document originally was a document from a Concordance program on his IBM PC. He exported the file from there and imported it into 1st-Word+. He then (after cleanup?) saved the file as a 1st- Word+ file, which is the one he imported into SL. So, it could be that 1st-Word+ allowed some "funny characters" to get by. He's no longer worrying about it, though. He's more interested in getting all his settings right so SL will run faster. He's making some headway. In fact, he may even join GEnie so he can take advantage of all this support! Here's what's happening. I made 6 pages in lanscape mode. Five of which have GEM images loaded into them. The sixth one is just a plain text frame. The images and text that I used are from the file TOWERSMP.ZIP located here on GEnie. First, the lock up. After I sent the text into the frame from the editor, I changed point sizes. I than underlined and skewed the title. With the body I played around with the Height icons. From past expirences I than saved the cdk. It shoud be noted here that I did have the gem images loaded into the first 5 pages at this time. I than hit ALT-T or was it ALT-E to go into the text editor. And I got a lock up. Yup. All the text became highlighted and everything locked up. Of course I than rebooted and tried the same thing again. Only this time I used the mouse instead of the keyboard to go into PKS-Write. And the same this happend. I rebooted a number of times and it was the same each time. So, since I had luckily saved everything and it looked o.k. to print. I decided what the heck, lets print it out. So I delete all of the loaded modules and hit ALT-P. Before printing I highlight LANSCAPE and click 'Min' and 'Max' for the six pages that I want to print. I than click on print. The first page prints out and I get an el-Crash-O. Here we go again. Reboot. Since page 1 has printed I set the 'Min' to 2. Page two prints and another Crash. Hmm, I says to myself. Well, I said more than that but can't print it here. I rebooted again. Only this time I set both the 'Min' and 'Max' to page 3. Well page three prints and no crash. I than proceed to print the last three pages one at a time with no crashes. For the record. I use a 4 meg 1040 STe w/tos 2.06 and an Adspeed STe board. The only .ACC's that I have loaded are Button Fix, UIS III, Warp 9 and Jet-On. I have never had this problem before. Though I have had the lock ups at one time or another when tring to enter the editor. It has never happened over and over again with the same text frame. Yes, I still have the .CDK and also the one and only _CRASH_1.CDK that I was able to save. I'm putting together an Aladdin setup for him to help him out a bit. I'll give him Darlah's signup number to start out with, though. Can he log on the first time using that ID without first having called GEnie to sign up? BTW, can you give me (once again) the recommended RAM settings for a Mega4ST? I was working with Jim over the phone. Sounds like he's got the "slows" real bad. Got him to turn off Virtual Memory and disable a few ACCessories. And he dropped ST RAM from 256K to 128K. It's sped up a little with each change that frees up some memory. But he says it's still taking up to 30 seconds to draw the screen once it starts to fill in the text (text frames only). After importing the text into his 7-page document he had 100K or so avaiable memory (after making the changes I mentioned). -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 90 Wed Jan 26, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:33 EST Tom ... Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 91 Wed Jan 26, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:48 EST Harry, for a Mega 4 ST I would recommend a maximum of 128 Kb for both the System Memory and the Vector Buffer. You could probably get away with 64 Kb of each if you load a lot of fonts. That is a another thing that devours RAM... keeping too many fonts loaded. Also, use the modularity of Calamus SL and load the modules you need, not all the ones you own :-) Regarding your friend, he definitely needs to turn OFF his caches in the Miscellaneous Settings menu. The only one I use is for vector graphics. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 92 Wed Jan 26, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:38 EST Glenn Gorman... I checked out your file that you uploaded to our test library. I followed all the steps you detailed in message 84 and was not able to crash Calamus SL. The file loaded properly; I was able to change character height mode; enter and exit and re-enter the text editor; print in landscape and automatic settings. As for your setup, I tested your file on a MSTE4/2.06 using Bfix, W9, and UIS3. I don't have JET-ON or and AdSpeed. The only clue I have about your problem is that you were printing landscape pages in landscape mode. From my experiences, landscape printing is more memory intensive than other types. I suspect your problem is RAM related and suggest that you dump your modules before printing. I did not have to do this but it is worth a try. What printer were you using? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 93 Thu Jan 27, 1994 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 02:09 EST Thanks! I think Jim DID say he had the Text Cache turned on. He'll be thrilled. Almost as thrilled as when he realized this morning that he had a 1040STe sitting unused on the other side of the room. And it has an accelerator! All of a sudden he cut his times nearly in half. :-) -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 94 Thu Jan 27, 1994 Y.DUFRESNE [Papageno] at 18:51 EST Lou and Glenn, Landscape printing was memory intensive with 1.09n but I don't think it makes any difference in SL. The 1.09 used to draw the page in the landscape orientation and then rotate it so it would output right. SL uses a different technique; it draws the page directly rotated. I believe - correct me if I'm wrong - that it performs rotation on all coordinates instead of doing it on every pixels of the page. This is MUCH faster as there is a lot less coordinates than pixels on a page. It is still a bit slower than normal portrait output though. Glenn, You can modify your printer cable so you don't need that accessory or remember to turn on you DeskJet before you start your computer. If you are interested it will cost you just a self addressed Stamped envelope. The part cost me about $2.00 for 50 of them so I am giving them away and I will send a print out of the instructions along with a helpful hint or two I learned about using it. It does not interfere with the use of the cable in any way. I have that cable in use on a HP IIIp right now and I I use it on both a TT and a DOS box. I mentioned it about a year ago but didn't go any details. How to optimise a scanned image in Calamus SL so that it matches the 2:1 dpi to lpi ratio most often used for scans and halftones. 1. You import the scan into a raster frame. 2. Execute the system module and click on OWN under Screen Resolution and enter the desired resolution for your scan. for example a scan at 133 lpi should be scanned @ 266 dpi therefore you should enter 266 dpi in the horizontaland vertical resolution entry fields. You may also use these fields because you want to distort the graphic in a controlled manner by entering different values in each of the fields. Back to the optimization; you then go to the raster graphics special funtions command area and click on the Optimize Size for Screen function (5.5.2.21) Et Voila... you will have a frame optimized for your desired line screen. The u2u files are great but they are not in a format allowing small tips to be passed on and since I was not on GEnie a year ago, I never saw Mario's post. I'm sure something like an online newsletter could be set up. We could form a team of 6-8 people (yes, I'm volonteering) and make a little CDK with examples and tips every month or so. As ya'll know the normal SL clipboard does show color. This gets me thinking two thoughts (about as many as I can handle at one time) ... 1) ...now why don't the module use color? It is handy for identifying various versions of a similar image, eh? 2) ...why the heck is there a clipboard module anyway? All it really seems to add is the ability to save what you have in the clipboard to a file, right? Why didn't someone just add that ability to the clipboard in SL like it - should- have had in the first place??? ...right?, ...Right! ...gimme five dude! %^)))))))))) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 124 Sat Feb 05, 1994 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 08:45 EST The Newsletter IS a good concept. The main problem is taking the time to coordinate the info sent in from various sources. And believe it or not, not everyone is on GEnie here yet. :-( David ... I'm sorry. I don't use Speedo GDOS. All I can suggest is to disable FALCON8 unless using Calamus SL. Stephen ... no idea on the color. I'll ask. Your comment about the external clipboard module illustrated the fact that you don't have Line Art yet. Please resume this discussion once you've received your order. May the light shine upon your work. ;-) Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 125 Sat Feb 05, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 10:01 EST Stephen, the external clipboard is actually a dedicated module that is designed to work with Line Art. While the icons appear to work the same way, you can use the external clipboard to 'pass' frames and objects into and out of vector graphic frames. IOW, you can embed frames by cutting them TO the external clipboard, then pasting or copying them TO a selected vector graphic frame. As for the lack of color in the module, we have addressed this item to the programmer by asking for an upgrade of the display. I hate the miniaturization of items on the external clipboard. David, I am not sure on the SpeedoGDOS thing... I have it installed and it does not usually conflict with Calamus SL. However, I don't have a Falcon computer. Maybe Sean Dougherty could comment. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 126 Sat Feb 05, 1994 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 13:56 EST Ok Nathan and Lou, thanks for the explaination about the Clipboad Mod. ...as soon as Line Art arrives I'll understand better, I guess. ...and I'm glad to hear you are trying to get the author to make the clips display in color!!! (Lou, I don't mind the miniaturization of the items, except when things like a line of text don't show up at all! IMHO, the clipboards should at least provide some hint as to what type of frame they are holding, ala 1.09n style. ...but we've been over that before, right? ) Still, it makes me wonder why the special functions of this Module are not just re-programed into SL's own Clipboard, thereby eliminating the need for yet another Module?????? I also notice that the scroll arrows in this Module, like the scroll arrows in other regions of SL still move 2 clicks for every 1 click of the mouse. I don't mean to just be a complainer guys, but I -would- dearly love to see many of the little glitches in SL get cleaned up along with the ongoing release of all these new modules! ie. The color tables still don't update as they should, and the display in the color table of Focoltone CYMK values is still not as it should be. In fact, most of the very old problem areas that we have so diligently been reporting have not been addressed as yet. Scrolling of styles in PKS for another example. NOTE: In the MODULES that came with my update, the Raster Generator Module seems to still have the problem of not changing the settings for the entire document in one move. Lucky for me, I still have an old version of the RG that does seem to work correctly (most of the time). Has anyone else noticed this???? My old good RG is: 49914 bytes, dated: 7/30/92 The new 'bad' RG is: 43326 bytes, dated: 11/03/93 ...there have also been other versions of the RG, but the good one above is the only one I've found to work decently, 'most of the time'. By 'good', I mean that changing the values at the document level, automatically sets the new values for all frames and pages in the doc. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 127 Sat Feb 05, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 14:32 EST Stephen, I don't know if it would be possible to program the new functions into the old clipboard. Remember, it was NOT an external module, it was hard coded into the main program. BTW, did I mention that the original name for the external clipboard module was actually ClipArt (as in LineArt)? As for the old double-click problem, this was remedied a while back. Wasn't BUTNFIX.ACC or SCROLFIX.ACC the correction? Re other old problems... we are just as anxious as you are. Let me tell you that I have ALL your letter and notes and do periodically summarize them for another FAX. Now that I have STraight FAX with a Calamus driver, I may start sending them myself :-) Regarding the RAS GEN module, I am going to ask Doug Walter to help. You can't hardly use P-Maker AT ALL unless you have the manual open on the desk so you can look up the section that covers what should be a simple thing to do. Some things it does so clumsily (like grouping items? Forget it!) it's not even worth it. Other simple items it doesn't do AT ALL (would you like a little arrowhead on the end of your line? I downloaded DEADSEA.GIF, #31679, and HUBBLE01.GIF, #31681. As for the PCX files, it happens with all the stuff I got from a friend's PD grapics CD-ROM. It's all in PCX, and I have to convert them to IMG. They load fine into MVG. By the way, I thought I figured out the problem with using Aladdin with Outburst. The program came with two different versions of the auto prg. One called OBURST.PRG the other called OBURSTX.PRG. The first was offered as having been tested and "clean," the other was supposed to be faster, but offered as "not fully tested, use at own risk." I found that when I had the "clean" version installed, I could run Aladdin... at least sometimes. Tonight it that version the same thing. So back to rebooting without Outburst. (ORCA) >You see, there were a half-dozen betas between each release >version... (ST.LOU) At _least_ a half dozen. In the last few weeks before the November update was released, there was fast-n-furious activity to fix Rast_Gen. Seems like they cranked out a new beta every other day. I have a bityard full of scrap modules :-) The good news: The main issue - that of an incorrect raster matrix SIZE - has been corrected. Unfortunatly, some of the early "11/93" SL updates were shipped with another faulty Rast_Gen module (dated 11/03/93) _before_ further testing revealed a problem. The bad news: The "change" heirarchy still seems to be broken (as Rast_Gen has been in all releases since the 7/30/92 version you mentioned). Funny deal, this one: Choosing the DOCUMENT or PAGE options only effects the _blank_ page or document itself but NOT any of the frames contained therein. Works kind of like the "color choice" box on Ford's old Model T order form. :-) The only way I can find to change quantities of existing frames is by using SL's dynamic linking feature (Select All) on a page-by-page basis :-( Ok, with the exception of the strange heirarchy, here's what works - the elder module's extender renamed to avoid duplicity: RAST_GEN.OLD 49914 08-26-92 <- Rast_Gen "Classic". RAST_GEN.CXM 43421 11-24-93 <- The latest, corrected & stable. Of course, either module works with any update of SL, so if you still have the 8/92 "Rast_Gen Classic" in storage somewhere, please use it. Note that the 7/30/92 Rast_Gen version you mentioned has the same byte count as the 8/26/92 version. Hmm, I recall earlier discussions where after much confusion it was discovered that both dates reflected two "master disc" pressings of the same basic update package. Now for a question about it. In the .LZH there were two files. The RAS_GEN.CXM and a file entitled RASCACH.CXM. When I attempt to load RASCACH.CXM I get a message telling me that it is not licensed for my copy of Calamus and it refuses to load. I _did_ overwrite an earlier RASCACH.CXM on my hard drive (indicating to me that there was one there previously and therefore I _did_ have it. For the life of me, I can't recall what RASCACH.CXM was all about. I assume, from the name anyway, that it was some sort of raster caching module or something. Would you please enlighten me? Thanks. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 161 Wed Feb 09, 1994 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 09:00 EST Dave, Your original RASCACH was one of the earlier versions of the module with an added raster object cache of some sort. That version also had the incorrect SIZE display bug, so no real loss if you overwrote it. If you want it, simply reload from your old 8/93 update disks. :-) I'd bet that the newer version of RASCACHE was a _beta_ copy serialized for DMC Toronto's test copy of SL (which you now have as the finished upgrade). It was part of the 11/24/94 beta file I received and of course, I couldn't load it either. Perhaps that's the file that is being EMailed? Thank you for uploading the file of PCX pics you got from a PC CD ROM collection. They were helpful in tracking the problem. First the GIF problems.... You and others have reported that some of the GIFs from the Hubble Telescope collection do not load into Calamus SL. The reason is quite simple.... they are the newer 89a GIFLITE format. The SL driver only handles the 87a format. I discovered the format using a handy DA called WHATIS. I recommend you download it. > 28655 WHATIS65.LZH X D.BOWMAN9 930506 20224 228 2 > Desc: WhatIs version 6.5 file type ID'er > It is also possible to convert those 89a's to 87a's using a handy conversion program called 89a87a..... >27152 89A87A11.LZH X D.BOWMAN9 930101 12032 183 28 > Desc: Converts GIFLITE and 89a GIf's->87a > There are likely other conversion programs available to do the same thing. I did manage to convert a good number of the 89a Hubble pics that are in this RT's library. However, the HUBBLE01.GIF did not convert with this program. Perhaps GEMVIEW and DMJ_GIF would work. I did not try them. Now, on to the PCX import problem.... There were 7 files in your archive. All of them were described by WHATIS as 'unknown format' which is a very odd since PCX is such an old format. Perhaps one of our graphics experts like Damien Jones (DMJ), Mike Hill (M.HILL13) or Kelly Webb has an idea why this is so? Regardless, the DRAGON4.PCX and RHINO.PCX both loaded into Calamus SL using the PCX.CIR driver. The BELLS, BERNARD, BUDDHIST, CHIMERA and MEDUSA files produced the garbage that you reported. I then loaded each of the files into TouchUp and was able to convert all but BELLS and BERNARD to IMG format which loaded fine into Calamus SL using the GEMIMG.CIR drive. I have no idea what might be wrong with these files but I will continue testing other PCX file to look for a pattern. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 164 Wed Feb 09, 1994 C.ALLEN17 [Cliff] at 21:31 EST Lou, thanks, and I'll get back to you with feedback ASAP. 'Tis cool! Ok, on to some more problems I'm finding: 1) Can someone double check this, cuz I don't have a clue here: I have a HP550C printer and yesterday tried to print a page of plain text and it all came out RED! The color for the text style is K=100%, in fact that is the only 'color' used in the entire document. I'm using the latest HP550C driver, and the Linear Module, and have had this work correctly in the past, ie. pre-updated version. Loaded into the Linear Output Module is a CK4 that Mario made for the 550C. It works ok with CYMK files. I tried to print the 'black' text page with and without the Linear Module, but results were the same. (RED) ...Aaaargh! 2) In attempting to work with above problem, I came across something else. Using All Curve program to make a new CK4 file, one that eliminates the CYM and also reduces the K, I found that the CK4's saved by ALL Curve won't load into the Linear Module! ....Aaaaaaaarrrrgggghhh! 3) Next please, ...now that I have so many modules loaded at once, I thought it would be cool to record a macro that would work the "External Modules Scroll" arrows. You know, like to scroll the modules forward and back, right? Found out that although you -can- record such a macro, it won't work on play-back. Please try and see if it is just Orca?! I did find that you can make macros that will call up each of the loaded modules, as you would expect, I'm now using Control plus the Keypad numbers to call those mods. I would like to see the scroll arrows work in this way, ...any ideas? SAK :) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 167 Thu Feb 10, 1994 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 18:58 EST SAK, I use a Mac everyday, and I've had no real problems importing a TIFF file into Calamus. Whatever program you use to create the file, you need to do 1 of two things: 1. Save with Motorola settings. Apparently something about different byte orders and processing methods. Fortunately, some Mac programs can read both IBM and MAC TIFF's. 2. Don't use compression. This may not be an equitable solution, especially with the large size of color TIFF's ,but it's risky, IMO, when you want to go cross-platform if you don't know what compression scheme your destination program uses. FYI, the latest verison of TIFF (6.0) allows CMYK color specs as opposed to RGB. This means you can color seperate images, and you don't have to do it when you bring it into your layout package. Unique to Calamus is the ability to import and export files in this format. Hope this helps. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 174 Fri Feb 11, 1994 S.KALEITA [SAK] at 08:41 EST What would be nice, would be for some one to put together a list of all the IBM and Mac file formats, that Calamus 1.09N, Calamus SL, and even PageStream; can import. Then when we Atari DTP'ers, get files from the other platforms that we need to modify and output; we can specify to them the file types and the formats of those file types, that we need them to save their files in. Currently, there seems to be no problems with transporting files between MAC and IBM. However, even though Atari's can export files that import easily to IBM formats; their seems to be alot of problems with importing file formats to Atari Software; expecially since a MAC file format can import easily to an IBM program. If that file was then saved via IBM, us calamus SL'ers won't be able to import it. I have been getting files from a couple of my clients that are MAC and or IBM based. And being a graphic artist specializing in ScreenPrinting art and separations, many of the new accalimed graphic artists via computer software, don't have a clue as to how their artwork must be created in order to properly color separate it and output it. And when these type of artists save their files they just pick the formats that are available with in there software package, they know nothing of the different file formats, compression routines, or file headers...And to be honest; neither do I. We atari users need to know this stuff in order to keep pace with the rest of the world. These file import incompatibilities only make IBM and Mac users laugh at us. I have no need for an IBM or MAC, I can do everything I need to; on my TT. But when I must correct the problems of a peice of art created on a MAC or IBM, I run into all sorts of problems with importation of these files. And I'm sure that most of it is because of my lack of knowlege. I don't expect my clients to know why I can't read their file. I just need to learn how I can read their file. I thing between all the users online, Nathan, Lou and Mario; we should be able to come us with a list or even turoral, of HOW TO IMPORT files from MAC and IBM to Atari. Or maybe all this steam that I blowing off is wasted energy and my stupidy is the reason why I can't import these files.Maybe a simple one sentence reply will answer all my questions. See e-mail. SAK, I understand your predicament. True, platform switching can be a real pain sometimes. My experience taught me that since IBM and MAC users thought my using Atari was a joke, I remind them that most file transfer information and procedures I have learned have been from using an Atari. This immediately makes them sit up and take notice, because I can do the ob where they can't. Although it my seem like a hassle, it's actually been a plus because it's made me "smarter than the average bear" when using their machines. I work at a local print shop, which has in-house layout capability. I use a MAC all day long. I get a lot of calls from people who wish to output a file they've created in an IBM, and their assumption a lot of times is that it's no problem. Well, that kind of assumption is not entirely, but largely based on ignorance. Just try getting a file imported that you were told was a WordPerfect file, only to find out the file was created in MS Works and then saved as a WP file. Yeeech. Also, I've had no luck getting a straight Corel Draw file into a MAC application. It's gotta be exported to EPS, with fonts (unless converted to paths), and scanned images. On the other hand, things like MACLink have made it helpful, and many programs import directly. My point here is that if they understand the differences, we all learn. The problem is that some don't want to go that trouble. Well, so much for that slight diatribe. So what's the solution for Atari users? Well, several. Several programs will help you getting from MAC to Atari. If you have Spectre, Transverter is pretty cool. MacSee is also available, as a seperate program. I use it all the time to transfer files from my MAC formatted Syquest to the Atari, with very few problems. However, I can only seem to go from Atari to MAC using MacSee to a floppy, but it does work. Also, if you do use a MAC, PC Access, MacLink, and the ol' Apple File Exchange are good utilities that will read an IBM disk directly. Of course, MACs incorporate a SuperDrive, which reads IBM and MAC disks. I've used these a lot to move PostScript files around. As for the IBM side, I've had pretty good success, but alas, most of that is from text-based files (Word Processing, database,etc.). However, many PCX, IMG, GIF files that are supposed to be for IBM that I've downloaded have been OK for me, for the most part. From the Calamus side, Bridge is a good tool for getting stuff out to a MAC or IBM. Granted, for this purpose I have primarily used the Illustrator 3.0 export, and it works great. I'll need to really check out the TIFF filters. There are parameters to save a file with Intel or Motorola information. SL does have a TIFF 6.0 export filter outside of BRIDGE, but I only use it when I need CYMK conversion. Also, the program EPS to CVG converter works well too, if only using Illustrator 1.1 format. (Nathan, will there be a Illus. 3.0 or higher update?) A how-to tutorial would be time-consuming at best. Maybe someone will tackle it. The fact is, my guess is that the average user doesn't really care what format it saves in. I say this because I don't see too many people in the design industry taking a PostScript file to an imagesetter for output, but a Quark file, a PageMaker file, a Freehand/Illustrator file, etc., even though the PS file would cause the least hassle for all involved, because then the lino operator doesn't have to fiddle with the file. So I guess it's up to us to be a little smarter than the computer. I'll check into specifics, if you want to send me a test file via e-mail, and maybe we can all figure it out. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 179 Sat Feb 12, 1994 REALM [Joey] at 05:46 EST SAK, try the latest GEMview it gets better with every release. I was surprised, in oil city Calgary, not be be able to find any clipart that fits the bill. Anyone in Houston, Louisiana or Alaska have such an animal? A DXF file or anything that is detailed is what I need. I could spend a week creating one in OA3 but I don't have the time. Any help gratefully received!!!! Keith Brooks ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 193 Tue Feb 15, 1994 Y.DUFRESNE [Papageno] at 00:17 EST Haven't seen this one Vortext. If it happened in normal GEM, I would suggest PKSWRITE.MAC might be the problem... Whait a minute... Wouldn't you have 'c' as the "Close Window Gadget" keyboard equivalent in TaskMan? Any Codekeys or other kind of macro that could be doing so? I will suggest the old "Bare the system" method, adding TSR and ACCs one by one to see if they cause the problem. Make sure you don't have two copies of PKSWRITE.MAC baring the same name anywhere on the system. Sometimes PATH= definitions in the GEM.CNF might have SL load the wrong one. Please keep me posted and I'll try to help youthe best I can. Yanick @ CGA PS.: I forgot to mention a small cosmetic bug yesterday. The Module icons don't revert properly, ending that the wrong module is turned black. A real tiny buggy :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 194 Tue Feb 15, 1994 N.ROUGHLEY [Neil] at 02:37 EST When defining the spacing within a justified block, if the maximum percentage is set too high, Calamus comes up with the prompt, "The set boundries for your spacing could not be retained. Please modify minimum and maximum values or add a hyphen." It's here that Calamus seems to act odd -- I can't do any of the above. Yet I remember being able to do so with the original version of SL. In the layout window, all the text that did adhere to the spacing boundries would be displayed. The last line of text being the one where boundries could not be met. It was just a matter of adding a hyphen or lowering the maximum spacing percentage in the ruler. Now, with the current version of the TEXT module, I can't properly access the ruler to lower the percentage, nor can I insert a hyphen. Text work in the layout window is now effectively useless. The only way I can get things workable again is to go into PKS and change the ruler there to *left-justified* and flow the text back into the frame. I can then access the ruler in the layout window again. This just gets me back to square-one, though. Note that I can't change the 'Min. Space' and 'Max. Space' in PKS's Edit Ruler because it does not 'tie in' with the layout's ruler (this seems to be the only parameter that doesn't). Am I doing something wrong here, or is it Calamus? If the original TEXT module's spacing within a justified block worked, shouldn't it still work? I'm using the November upgrade, including the updated STYLE and TEXT modules. Also, when doing a search-and-replace, PKS will not allow you to CANCEL the operation. This used to work. << Neil >> ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 195 Tue Feb 15, 1994 G.FUHRMAN [gnox] at 05:46 EST Nathan, > If we pooled our knowledge here, perhaps we could save many of us a > great deal of trial and error time trying to figure out what worked > with what and maybe even why! Being only an amateur desktop publisher, I don't have a lot of useful information to add to the pool, but I hope others do! One comment though: > TIFF is a standard graphics format available across all platforms. It > handles 24 bit. I remember a comment somewhere in the MVG documentation that the TIFF format was standardized in name only. ;) I think this is even more true now than it was three years ago. On the rare occasions when I've used TIFFs generated on other platforms, I've had different results trying to load them into different (Atari) programs - ranging from complete success to extreme slowness to complaints about the format to complete failure. Same with EPS format. Sorry I can't be more specific! Perhaps if people follow your lead here, results will get more predictable. (Note to topic cops ... I don't own Calamus, but this is where Nathan suggested digging the pool. ;) gnox ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 196 Tue Feb 15, 1994 L.PECKHAM at 18:03 EST I just got my upgrade and MOUNT yesterday. On the Mount module, I'd like to say that, though I expected it, I am nevertheless disappointed that it can't handle printing 7 x 8.5 pages onto Legal-sized paper. I know that half-legal- size pages aren't as common as half-letter-size, but surely they are used often enough that the format should be supported. Also, the problem I reported several months ago with the 8/93 version still persists in the 11/93 version. That is, if columns are set up with absolute line spacing, and column one starts with a larger-sized header, the text lines will not be lined up with column 2 and subsequent problems, despite the specified absolute line spacing. (To be a bit more specific than last time, a short series of tests shows that this results when the header text point size is greater than {absolute-line-spacing - 2 points}. I.e., if the absolute line spacing is 12 points, and the header text size is 10.5 points, the lines will be off. Vertical alignment is set to 'TOP, Text Chain'.) Thirdly, has a final version of the HPLJ4 printer driver been completed? I'd much prefer to have a version that supports the common US paper sizes (letter *and* legal), rather than the single selection of A4 which the beta test driver has. (By the way, a newer version of the driver should be given a large time-out value - the HPLJ-4P can get behind the computer, especially in the 200 dpi draft mode. [And *that's* on an 8 Mhz computer.] Of course, the work-around is just to use 'Other', but still...) -- Linda Peckham ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 197 Tue Feb 15, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:22 EST Neil, to cancel a PKS Search and Replace, type 'a' for 'abbruch'... German for 'cancel'. Regarding the maximum spacing... as I recall it works in reverse. Set a small number to tighten the spacing between words. As for the hyphens... did you change your CALAMUS.SET file? The hyphens are set using the ASCII Entry method in the Key Bindings Editor. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 198 Tue Feb 15, 1994 S.KALEITA [SAK] at 20:49 EST Thanks, Tom; for the informative post. I will be saving it for future use. I also am wondering about Spot color in SL. JOEY, I suppose I should register for the latest version of GemView; Thanks SAK :) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 199 Tue Feb 15, 1994 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 23:27 EST Neil, Lou, Nathan... Well said Neil! You have described a good part of the problem with justified text handling, just as both Vortext and myself did about six months ago. In addition to what you have noted, I will -again- state that changing the style of the text to something that SL doesn't like to justify will produce the same 'Catch 22' situation as you have described. This has effectively left us with no 'real' working functions for justified text. ie., once you flow it in, -if- it fits you are pretty much stuck with it as it sits. I would call that a 'not really working function'. Perhaps there are great things going on behind the scenes, yet again, that none of us are aware of, ...but.... it has been a looooonnnnggg time now that we have not been able to use justified text in the manner that we should. I can't justify this! %^) *************** This part is for both DMC and Cybercube, but I will post it here. It is about problems running Calamus SL with the Cyrel card. 1) Try using All Curve ACC with the Card in TC mode. You'll see what I mean, I'm sure. FYI, I'm doing this on the 1426 monitor and with TC Shift prg. installed. What a mess. It also seems to not save a CK3 correctly in TC mode. Try loading one into SL. What I saved is not what I get. 2) Now I know that I've had a reply from Mario about this, but due to the serious nature of the issue I'm bringing it up again here. In both 256 color mode and True Color mode, Calamus does not display the TRANSPARENT write mode of any frames. They appear the same as OPAQUE frames! This is neither wysiwyg nor is it 'what you get is what you need'! It makes adjusting items in a layout impossible when you need to see through a frame. It has been suggested that this is a problem inside SL itself and not with the Cyrel card. If that is the case, I think it need some immediate and serious attention. As you -must- know, my main reason for buying a Cyrel was to use with Calamus SL. It is extremely upsetting to find things in SL that are not happy with True Color mode. ******** I have to jump back to All Curve prg. now. Perhaps some of this will be explained in the manual that I don't have, but.... All Curve lets you load a 'model' curve, ie. and existing CK4 file so that you can shape your new curves with something known as a reference. It will do so with a CK4 but will not with a CK3! Should it be renamed to 'Some Curves' prg. ...or what? %^) Further, why on earth wasn't it made to simply load all the standard SL CKx formats straight away? Rather than by having it's own native format and only using the CK's as 'models'. The more I see of it, the more I think this is yet another 'band-aid'. I mean that the better functioning of All Curve should really have been built into SL itself as a correction for the rather flaky gradient curve editor in SL. BTW, ...as always, all comments are welcome. %^) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 200 Wed Feb 16, 1994 REALM [Joey] at 01:11 EST SAK, Yeap!:-) You can send it to Cybercube if you want. Saves on trying to figure out the German stuff. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 201 Wed Feb 16, 1994 VORTEXT at 01:51 EST Neil, Welcome to justified h**l. I gave up on trying to adjust the settings moons ago. Anytime I played with them, I ended up being shut out of my text and nothing in my frames. Stephen and I played with it for some time, all to no avail, and I seriously doubt it will ever be corrected. I think its one of those "Ah, so what!"s Furthermore, while I'm griping. Hate to say it folks, but the crosshairs still disappear whenever I reformat a ruler. Moving to the left side of the screen brings them back, but its a real pain in the arrs. Another of those little bugs that only us "you do it wierd" users could find. Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 202 Wed Feb 16, 1994 N.ROUGHLEY [Neil] at 04:29 EST Lou: So it's 'a' to CANCEL in PKS. I'm glad to know that. As for the spacing problems, it's not my SET file or too large a spacing percentage (as both Stephen and Daniel can attest to). Like I said, this function used to work when SL was first introduced. Wish I kept my old copy of the program and modules to try it out again. Linda: About your problems having columns not align correctly when using absolute rulers. I ran into this problem, too. If the subhead was bigger than the body text, columns would not align. The solution ended up to be really simple: The body text's style code *has* to be on the same line as the subhead's text. Illustrated below is how I do it in PKS: body text body text body text body text body text body text body text body text.< [R]< [R][S]SUBHEAD[S]< [R]Body text body text body text body text body text body text body text body text.< The first two rulers in the above example are absolute, controlling the vertical spacing of the subhead in relation to where it fits between the body texts. Both these absolute rulers, when added together, *must be an exact multiple of your body text's leading* (point size plus line spacing). One can be a big number, the other small (whatever). But if their total is not a multiple, columns will not align properly. The third ruler (for the body text) can be either absolute or relative -- it really doesn't matter so long as the 'math' is correct. The style code after "SUBHEAD" controls the body text. It has to be on this line. If it's placed on the same line as the beginning of the body text (the logical place for it, really), SL gets confused when formatting the text. By using this example, the subhead's point size can be increased or decreased without the body text going out of alignment. All this without using the Vertical Text Alignment functions, which I've never had to use. << Neil >> ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 203 Wed Feb 16, 1994 S.BLACKBURN [STEVE] at 10:49 EST Lou, Every once in awhile, SL seems to partialy lock up (for lack of better term). It will allow me to select a frame but won't allow me to move the frame anywhere. I have to re-boot to get things working again. Any Ideas? SAK, Dont feel bad. You're not alone. I've been a professional photographer for the last 15 years and I've been a quasi-artist all my life. I do alright with what I do but I feel pretty feeble with the computer at times. (say most of the time:-) I agree with you (if it's possible) that a U2U on the nuances of importing files from other computers would be nice. Understanding file formats and their uses would be nice. Understanding how to get the best output from what you got would be nice. Putting Marios brain in a bottle and connecting it up to my computer would be nice.... TOM I imagine a lot of people "don't care" about different file formats, but the fact remains, those that do have an advantage. Steve ------------
