I didn't make any drastic changes. Somehow or other I munged the .SET file. It was really weird. I went back to 1.09n to do a brochure and tried to import some .CVG's from OLA 3 and found out that you can't do that. It was a pretty frustrating week. I really do appreciate all the the help...it would be pretty lonely without Genie, I don't know how people who don't access Genie can get through all the problems that pop up. Steve ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 3 Tue Jun 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 10:21 EDT I'm glad that you resolved things Steve. On the CVG from OL3 comment, you do realize that you have the option of exporting 1.0 or 1.1 CVG's? The majority of our customers still do not own a modem although a significant percentage does. We still do customer support by telephone, fax and even real mail in envelopes and everything. ;-) BUT, we hang out on GEnie because we enjoy ourselves and the atmosphere here so that is where you are most apt to reach us after hours. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 4 Tue Jun 15, 1993 BHARTSHORNE at 20:20 EDT Nathan, I recently had the good fortune to buy a Falcon030. What are the steps necessary to get Calamus operating on it, if you don't mind, pleeze! :>) Also I wanted to tell you I think the toolbox module is a terrific addition to SL...I use it all the time. I also noticed by the way that Softlogik is apparently dropping the Atari platform... and quite frankly I sincerely hope that the PC release for Calamus does not portend the same for DMC. If it does I just hope that the fearures not working yet especially some of the tab functions, and anchor picture. Can you give us any idea how you view the Atari market right now? (meant to say in the sentence before- will be implemented before that happens!!!) Also, you told me earlier you would have Mario post a list of possible uses for the mask module-did you ever do that? Thanks again for all your help- Bill Hartshorne ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 5 Tue Jun 15, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:44 EDT Hi Bill. I don't know if Mario posted a text file on Falcon uses. Use the REA 20 AUT=ISD CAT=18 NOR to search for Mario's posts. I do know that there are a number of TIFF files in Library 30 to SHOW some Mask effects. In addition, Mario is working on some sample "how-to" Mask samples. Mario! Get moving :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 6 Tue Jun 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 22:10 EDT Hi Bill. Just do not try and run Calamus SL in the Falcon "true color" mode because Calamus SL runs in 1, 4, 8, 24/32 bit color modes, not 15 or 16. Sorry. There is a new version of Calamus SL, on the Atari platform, destined to appear in the near future. I'm not prepared to get into details yet. And as you can see from the last mailout, more modules are coming all the time. Without a doubt the release of the Windows NT version of Calamus will have an impact but it will be a positive one. First of all, you will be able to import Atari CDKs into the Window version and second of all, the NT version uses all the NT drivers, and True Type and PostScript etc. etc. More later. This means that if I do my job correctly and sell a few pieces, we will no longer be so isolated with our Atari versions. I cannot predict the future and I WILL NOT second guess Atari. I can insure the future of Calamus, regardless of the computer and platform or die trying. ;-) Sincerely Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 7 Wed Jun 16, 1993 M.SHANNON at 01:53 EDT CALAMITES, It has been suggested that I clarify my relationship with Lou. I have no relationship with Lou other than by means of this medium and any issues arising in discourse or argumentation should have been confined to E-Mail as they represented my personal views only. My apologies to you Lou to any user who may have found this earlier string of mutual participation objectionable. I would like also to apologize for any inadvertant damage my posts may have caused. It was not my intention to malign or denigrate any of the personnel at DMC or in support of DMC or any of the users of DMC products. So, just to make my position clear, I'd like to say that in my experience as an owner of CALAMUS109N, CALAMUSL, and OUTLine ART, DMC and their staff richly deserve their already excellent reputation for supporting their users and their products. Issues I have raised here were ones I felt were relevant to product support, not sales or promotion, as the abundant and enthusiastic support suffices to insure both of these other issues a happy future; therefore I intend to restrict my future posts in this and other DMC topics to specific questions about DMC products. Today is different - I have purchased the most up to date copy of CalAssistant SL, version 2.02 and have been playing with it all morning. Overall it seems to answer the questions that I am always needing answers to. The manual amazes me though, incredible spelling errors and gramatical mistakes. How can this happen in the 1990's what with dictionaries and the like to help even the slowest learner. One major problem is the "Express Index topic selector", it will work in some instances but not others. One is supposed to be able to hit the alphabetical key respresenting the first letter of the word you are looking for. ie. "Go to beginning of Block", I need only hit the G key. Unfortunately it won't always go to the correct section. Hopefully, a minor adjustment on the part of the programmers will solve this problem. My question: Do you work "with" SPAR SYSTEMS in New York, who are the people who sell this product?, if not, do you actually recommend the product, or, have anything to do with it at all? Question two, if I may. My office are always impressed with my Calamus output and constantly ask if they can use the program on their 486 machine. I have no answers for them and wonder if you might help me pacify them. To exchange files with them would save me days of work, especially when it comes to 'price book update time' (July 1st, 1993, is the next one) I won't apologise for the length of this message 'cause I seldom communicate anything with other readers, today I get my dimes worth and, perhaps, start a new topic ???? FRANK FROM VANC. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 13 Thu Jun 17, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 20:33 EDT Hi Frank. Good to see you posting. ;-) We have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Spar Systems. Later this year we will be releasing a Windows NT version of Calamus which will be compatible with our Atari version. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 14 Fri Jun 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 13:39 EDT Frank, it is a pleasure to hear your voice again . I see Nathan already answered your question but, heck, I'm on a break for ten minutes and I want to post something tonight! :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 15 Sat Jun 19, 1993 S.WINICK at 08:59 EDT Nathan, The new operating systems for the Intel-based systems are long overdue and should finally unleash the potential power of those machines, especially when teamed with high-end professional software packages like Calamus/SL. Being able to easily move SL files between platforms will also be a major advantage - - especially for your existing Calamus owners who have always had to fight that battle at the office. However, do you have a good idea of when Windows NT will actually be released? The prices I've heard for what Microsoft will be charging for that new operating system, plus the sheer size of the package and its hard drive size requirements, will most likely make it unfeasible for most home users and many small business users as well. That fact may effectively limit your market area to large business installations, many of whom by now are most likely already locked into other DTP programs and will be reluctant to change. On the other hand, IBM rolled out OS/2 v2.1 last week for public consumption, at a price that everyone can afford. It also offers a 32-bit operating system environment with a user friendly interface and tremendous potential. And it is even backward compatible so it can run existing MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 applications in an OS/2 window (but probably not NT applications). It would seem to be a good idea to investigate the feasibility of either releasing an OS/2 version of SL or at least a Windows 3.1 version (although a Windows 3.1 version would undoubtedly not have anywhere near the power of an NT or OS/2 version). On the other hand, a Windows 3.1 version, if it would be possible to port a powerful program such as Calamus/SL over to such a patched together system overlay such as Windows 3.1, would open up your market to virtually everyone who owns a personal computer. DMC's major handicap in the past has been being limited to such a small market area (the Atari market). It's probably time to move beyond those handicaps, bite the bullet and realize that the majority of the world's computer owners have made their choice, and the marketing prowess of Intel/Microsoft/IBM has won. The buying public, by and large, simply plays follow the leader in their computer purchases. Now that you've let everyone know about the upcoming release of an NT version of SL (this is beginning to sound like a military operation with all those initials ;-), do you have any plans to begin showing some public demonstrations of SL/NT? Gosh, I can see it now, customers walking into the store and demanding "SHO/SL/NT/2/ME!" ;-] Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 16 Sat Jun 19, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 09:26 EST Nathan, I know it is a little early to ask, but, do you expect the Windows NT version to be limited to Windows NT? Will you have a Windows 3.1 version. I would love to have a Calamus for work. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 17 Sat Jun 19, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 10:15 EDT Yes, there will be a Windows version, probably 4.0 actually. ;-) And yes, the first official public showing of the Windows NT version of Calamus will be ... at the Asheville show. We'll have a 486 beside a TT I imagine, both running Calamus, displayed by Mario. (Pssst Sheldon, is that what you wanted me to say?) ;-) Last I heard, the latest release date for NT is August. I'd like to see the NT version on the market by October if possible, certainly before the end of the year. Remember, the files are compatible. This will be a tremendous boost for the Atari version, not to mention eliminating the entire local service bureau issue altogether. I will start a new topic in a few weeks specifically to discuss the NT version if you'd like. Let's please confine our questions to the Atari version here. We have a new version for the Atari coming out next month, with new features, with some long awaited inactive features finally activated etc.. There are also a few new modules. Development continues on the Atari platform! Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 18 Sat Jun 19, 1993 F.LOWE1 [FRANK LOWE] at 11:13 EDT Thanx Lou for interrupting your break to chat. Nathan did answer my question but, for some reason, did not elaborate. I intend to put out hours of time training our staff to use the up and coming SL for Windows; as well as spending, with Nathan, numerous dollars to purchase the appropriate software and modules to fascilitate a full Calamus system in the office alongside an extensive Atari system already in place. My question to him was based on the training aspect of the above; I felt that a simple program like CalAssist SL would greatly reduce my manhours (personhours, sorry). If DMC PUBLISHING have absolutely no connection with CalAssist then I could be wasting my money as there is probably no feedback between the author and DMC resulting in a good quality program lacking current information. I will re-phrase my question to Nathan - Have you used the program CalAssist, and if so, what are your imressions?. Give me a mark out of ten. Cheers Lou, FRANK FROM VANC, THANX. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 19 Sat Jun 19, 1993 DABRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 13:17 EDT Frank, I used CalAssistant when I first moved over to Calamus 1.09N. The program essentially provides a help file for the various menu and icon options. The main drawback from my point of view was that CalAsst's menu didn't _show_ icons -- only text, so I had a great deal of trouble identifying the icon which was related to the concept I wanted to pursue. I tried to use it for several days, but found that the manual combined with experimentation led to a quicker learning speed for me. I haven't followed the later development of CalAsst. If you are using SL, please be sure that there is an SL-compatible version. The 1.09N version would be useless in conjunction with SL. In conjunction with 1.09N, it could be useful for some, especially for folks who are already familiar with most of the icons. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 20 Sat Jun 19, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 13:21 EDT Nathan, ...how compatability the other way around, that is will NT CDK's also import to the Atari version of SL???? ...and if so, what happens to things like colors, fonts, etc, that are postscript versions? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 21 Sat Jun 19, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 18:32 EDT Frank ... There is NO communication between DMC and Spar. The first I heard of the program originally was after the fact. I've used it only to insure it didn't damage anything. There will be a new module offered in the very next mailout which is a HELP module. I think you will find it of interest. Naturally the NT version has a complete online Help system typical of Windows applications. Stephen ... the intent is for bi-directional. As you've pointed out, there are many variables. I'm not certain if the initial release will allow from NT to Atari and I would be getting ahead of myself to discuss it now. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 22 Sat Jun 19, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 18:40 EDT Frank, if you are thinking of moving on to the NT version of Calamus you will be very pleased to know that it has context sensitive help - just like the new Outline Art 3.0. (Unfortunately, the OL3 demo in the library does not contain that help file.) The help file in SL/NT is accessed by the F1 key, not as a DA like CalAsst. Today I was punching through the NT version and the online help is so good I am going to recommend that we not bother shipping a manual! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 23 Sun Jun 20, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 00:26 EDT I think Sheldons entire post sums up why I like TOS.:-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 24 Sun Jun 20, 1993 S.WINICK at 07:19 EDT Nathan, >> And yes, the first official public showing of the Windows NT >> version of Calamus will be ... at the Asheville show. Also runs DOS programs faster that in DOS. As a matter of fact I just downloaded some files under under OS/2 and was averaging 909.6 cps, then downloaded the same files under DOS and averaged 880.1 cps, both through PC Aladdin 1.63. I know off subject, but facts are facts and I think I'll keep my copy of Calamus SL because it seems I'll be able to run the Windows version in OS/2 if the conversion price is reasonable ? Hold the thought, I'm trying to come up with the money! :) I'm sure this has probably been hashed before, but- Has anyone done a driver for the Star NX 2420 printer? Im using the NEC C P6 driver and it screws up the page length... The GEM import driver I have always changes the frame size to the original GEM files parameters, anything newer? It's a pain to resize all the time. Any documentation for the PKS Write modules macro compiler? I hate TTP programs without docs. The manual, from page 1 to page 12 is devoted to the program; and page 13 to 52 are excellent tips on how to use certain functions in SL. I have uncovered a couple of tips that have helped me already. It is a DA though. I fear that it will interfere with something in my system ,sooner or later, (whoops, sooner it seems!!). Nathan & Lou, your posts made my day.(Yip-pee) A fully integrated help program and a new version of SL will do wonders for my upcoming tasks. Nathan: It does surprise me that SPAR did not work with you prior to producing such an intrinsic product as CalAssistant. Perhaps SPAR are the North American distributers and this program is written outside of NA. Could be from the UK or Germany and they may have worked with their respective SL people. Anyway, END OF STORY, I look 4ward to whatever you throw at me now 'cause it sounds great (WOW) I have a network of over 100 dealers; it only takes a whisper to get them excited. They all seems to use an IBM PC type system. "I have a dream" to be able to distribute their price books over the telephone line in a CDK file. HOW SOON? Put the pressure on :-) Sorry, I only answer support. Nathan does all the marketing questions Martin, welcome to Calamus support on GEnie. I am sure you're gonna love it here :-) Re your STAR printer... I would think you can use the EPSON LQ driver or the generic 240_180.CDT driver for a STAR which is supposed to be Epson compatible. Have you tried those? As for the GEM import - it is sizing your frame to optimum screen size. It should also be in Proportional Sizing frame mode which means you can quickly adjust the size by changing either the dX or dY. No need to drag handles. As I understand it, this is actually better than having to optimize and resize a frame. Now you only do one! For info on the PKS modules, see anything in Library 30 by A.VALENT. (Mike) put together the PKSWRITE.MAC that is now shipping with all version of SL. FYI, it is 3922 bytes. Please make sure you have _that_ version in your modules folder. If not, contact me in email and I will send it to you. If you would like a quick look at the support files, do a SEARCH in the library for "Calamus" and you will find about 20 pages of file listings which you can later browse amd/or download. Or you can download the file called CAL_LIB1.LZH # 26472 which has a long description of all files up to last November. (Hmmm, time to do a new one, eh?) If you are a beginner, also consider the USER to USER files in library 30 or order the two volumes (total of 9 disks) from DMC. I believe they are 20.00 per volume. Frank Lowe, now you have my interest! The Focoltone color matching system is available with Xpress and Pagemaker to name two off the top of my head, not to mention Calamus of course. ;-) Could you be more specific on the article in Byte and I'll go look it up? Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 44 Sun Jun 27, 1993 M.TERRY5 [Martin] at 22:53 EDT Well Lou, the generic Epson drivers do work fine, but what I'm looking for is a COLOR driver (which is why I'm currently using the CP6 driver) unfortuntaly, as I said, it seems to make the page about ^^^ C meaning color :) 13 inches long so I can't print more than a page at a time without resetting the printer. As to the GEM import the only beef I have is that I ALREADY have established the frame size I want, then do the import and BLAM it gets resized to the optimum screen size, even if the LOCK function is used on the frame before the import. Now I have to resize the frame... As for the PKS stuff I do have the PKSWRITE.MAC but what I'm interested in is the COMPILER... GO GET 'EM ;-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 47 Tue Jun 29, 1993 M.TERRY5 [Martin] at 23:26 EDT Nathan - I'm gonna jump in with a bunch of questions so take a deep breath... If these have been answered (many times) before, I apologize... In 5.1.3.4 of the S/SL manual it tells how you can make a copy of the command area by holding the shift key. How do you GET RID of the copy you make??? In 5.2.2.9 of same it shows a screen shot of the Print Document Dialog box. I have S instead of SL (you know, the crippled one :) ) and Instead of a COLOR SEP. button I have a TEST button. What does it do? In the same section (page 20-21) it talks about the Fill Pattern: x 1, x N, and x R buttons. On page 21 is says "To see how the different buttons work, change the screen magnification to Printer 1:1 and observe the results;" I can't seem to see a difference? I mean, I understand what the book says it does but I simply don't see the difference by performing the steps outlined. On page 5.2.3.10 of the manual is shows a screen shot of the Miscellaneous Settings Dialog. The program however has an option not shown in the manual; Screen Rasterization ON OFF. I think I've seen something about this somewhere else, but can't remember where. What does it do? Same section, page 46 talks about the cache memory. But what EXACTLY does Save Caches with Mask YES NO do?? Same section again page 47 Formula Postion; This doesn't seem to have any effect for me. The alerts ALWAYS show up at the mouse position, (not that I mind..) what am I doing wrong? In 5.4.1.7 Set Units of Measure at the end of this section the manual says "To change the base value for page, character and line measurements, click on the "Calculate New" field." Where is this field (button?) at? In 5.5.2.18 Set Control Line what does CLIPBOARD shown in the screen shot do? It isn't even acknowledged in the manual? And last but not least (for this post) Section 5.5.2.32 Automatic Tiling isn't present in the S version, even though that fact isn't mentioned on page 14 (of the S supplement) 'Calamus SL functions inactive in S'... Oh well, I know it's just another reason to upgrade to SL... It would seem that my ASCII entry ability has been disabled. In other words, when I'm in the text editor and I try to enter an opening quote by typing [A]#171, I get nothing. Furthermore, if I attempt to enter an opening quote using the macro for it [C]1, the 1/2 mark shows in the editor, but when I close the editor, I have a 1/2 in the text. Help. Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 54 Thu Jul 01, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 01:49 EDT Frank, Unfortunately, the current version of SL doesn't save RasGens's settings to the CALAMUS.SET file. So for now anyway, 28 LPCM is the defacto default :-) You may have noticed however, that all RasGen settings _are_ saved with the document. Martin, >In the same section (page 20-21) it talks about the Fill Pattern: x >1, x N, and x R buttons. I've never used these settings, but you may also need to have "Screen Rasterization" turned ON to see this on-screen. Further, most raster related functions require a monochrome monitor (or monochrome mode with a color monitor) to preview at Printer 1:1 accurately. Why? Because you are emulating your chosen printer, and (most) printers are "1 bit" or "monochrome" devices. Also, I believe that the xN and xR settings only effect the GEM fill patterns that you can select in the SET COLOR/FILL PATTERN sub-menu (found in places like the RASTER and VECTOR modules). Thanks Lou :-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 55 Thu Jul 01, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 22:26 EDT Doug ... the default can be changed by saving out the *.CRI to the default file CALAMUS.CRI or RASTER.CRI in the Modules folder ... This is how I have it on my system. I'll confirm this tomorrow and have Nathan say Yay or Nay accordingly. You are correct in the belief that the xR and xN settings affect the fill patterns only and not the screens as defined by the raster generator. Mario @ DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 56 Thu Jul 01, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 22:38 EDT No need to wait till tomorrow I just confirmed with my system that If you save your preferred *.CRI file to the Modules folder as Calamus.CRI it will then become your default the next time you load Calamus. Hope this helps ... Mario @ DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 57 Fri Jul 02, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 21:00 EDT A Few Questions (to anyone who can answer) 1. Is there a way to calibrate Screen Colors to Printed Colors? 2. Is there a way to calibrate Swatch colors to Printed Colors? I understand spot colors are usually custom mixed (such as Pantone, so the CMYK equivalent will be off a bit) but FOCOLTONE colors (made from CMYK combinations) I have tried don't match closely at all. Also, I've had to adjust CMYK amounts for some Pantone colors so that the print device (DJ550C) would match more closely. Have I missed something? I don't believe there is a problem with SL in this regard, I'm just looking for a workaround without having to manually change each color to suit the printer, save a new palette; and then before I go to film, recolor everything so that my final output from the printer will be accurate. 3. Is there a way to make a tint of a spot color? (example: 50% of PMS 220) Merely taking 50% of CMYK values doesn't make the tint right. Or will this be possible once Adornment Color is available for SL? 4. I'm having a problem using the inverse function for frames in SL. What I'm doing is this: a. Import IMG file (monochrome, not grayscale) b. Create 25% raster frame (OK, 24.7%) c. Set raster frame to inverse The screen shows a white image through a 25% raster frame (this is what I want). Instead I get the regular black image through a 25% raster frame. It works using a 100% raster frame, but not the way I've described? I have 2 printers, a QMS-PS410 (which does LJII) and a HPDJ 550C, and neither show any difference, so I don't think it's the printer? Any suggestions? 5. Also, screen updates of CVG's with gradient fills are S-L-O-W. Note it is somewhat faster in monochrome mode, but in grayscale or color, using a 50mhz processor, it still slows to a crawl. I've tried caching in SL, and all that, to no avail. Other full color files in other modes are blazingly fast, including GIF's and TIFF's. Are there some debugging routines being used to do this or what? Other than that, SL is *plenty* fast. Any ideas as to what I can do? Thanks, Tom Jr. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 58 Fri Jul 02, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 21:49 EDT RE: Saving Default Raster settings in CALAMUS.CRI Thank you Mario. See, I learn something every day ;-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 59 Fri Jul 02, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 22:04 EDT Tom I will attempt to answer you point for point. >1. Is there a way to calibrate Screen Colors to Printed Colors? A. There are only two ways to do this on the Atari, firstly, if you own a monitor that has adequate color calibration facilities built-in RGB, intensity, temperature definition controls (White point and Black point) and a good graphics card. Some of the graphics cards come with Gamma control software (such as the Cyrel Sunrise). You will also need a reference RGB TIFF (such as is supplied with Photoshop). The reference Image must have true color bars and a perfect 50% grey area (called a neutral gray balance area) and part of a referenced area. The second part to this is that you need to have a hard copy of the reference handy, and to do the test in accurate lighting conditions. Bear in mind that your calibrations will only reflect accurate cast in the lighting conditions you performed the calibration in. >2. Is there a way to calibrate Swatch colors to Printed Colors? Yes but again this requires the use of the color separation module and an Imagesetter($30K) and densitometer ($2K) and a few hours to perform tests as well as a good understanding of how the Color sep module works. The 550C is not a good enough printer for accurate color proofs however again the Color sep and Color Line modules allow you to fine tune your color definition curves to get a close approx. 3>Is it possible to produce tints....? Yes, once adornment is activated this will be possible. However someone with a good understanding of color mixing could produce the relevant tints. Perhaps this information is contained in the Pantone color reference guides.... On the other questions I will have to get back to you ... Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 62 Sun Jul 04, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:48 EDT I'm posting the following here, rather than in email where I received it, so that Mario, Lou and everyone else can get a look at it please. ;-) ----- We upgraded to Calmus S from 1.09n a few months ago, and much help here on GENIE, cause we need it. The hardware is a 1040STF with 4MEg ram, an SM124 and a Syquest 44, and the troubles below seem uninfluenced by the presence/absence of n't like either the IMG's from TouchUp, or the ones on the clipart disks we got from you. It may say the memory is full (on a 2K file), bomb or just return to an empty frame. 2. We can't draw line or raster area frames, apparently because it isn't possible to select the color black (?). When the color/fill pattern command groups are selected, the color lists don't show on the screen. All that appears are the RO, GO, BO, transparent and color/fill pattern selectors and the C/% sliders. Manual sections 5.1.6. and 5.9.2.1 don't help because they assume the color lists are displayed and can be selected. Might be our fault rather than S's, but we need help. es. If the trouble has been fixed, we'll order the DATAFORMER asap. No problem if it won't handle a whole cdk file as long as it will handle one page at a time. One frame at a time wouldn't meet our needs. 4. At present I'm still using 1.09n more often than S. It's lots faster on screen redraws and not so demanding of my own brainpower. But I did catch your suggestion to someone with a similar complaint to look at DEFAULTS.LZH, and I will do so. Pam needs more of S's features for her commercial DTP, so has spent more time wrestling with S. Again, thanks . First of all R0 G0 B0 is black. Select the line or raster area type and click on the first color name (R0 G0 B0). Make sure you have not entered a 0.0 line width or a line style that is not solid. You can easily create your own color list. Go to the color/fill pattern dialog as described in 5.1.6 of the manual and click COPY several times. Use the K slider to make a 'gray' to suit your needs and rename the color name. Before you exit back to the program, SAVE your color list as a CFT. If all this sounds complicated, there are a number of CFT files already to download in Library 30. Let me know if you need help getting them. >If the trouble has been fixed, we'll order the DATAFORMER asap. No >problem if it won't handle a whole cdk file as long as it will handle >one page at a time. One frame at a time wouldn't meet our needs. > The problem with the release version of DF was with PS output. It was not verified as 100% but ALL other formats were working fine. What file format do you want to output? I hope I answered all your questions... your formatting was a little difficult to read. HINT: Hit [Return] twice between paragraphs. Daniel, ASCII Entry is activated from the Text Module. See [5.6.1.15] in you manual. Once it is activated, SAVE SYSTEM SETUP. Re the disappearing cross-hair.... I can't make this happen on my TT. All redraws work properly and the cross hair shows properly. I wonder if something in your SET file is toggling the display? In my setup the ALT SHIFT F10 binding toggles the cross hair. What do you have? Morgan, do you mean that your I beam cursor does not move unless you press the space bar twice? Or were you referring to inserting spaces in the PKS editor? On the big dictionary, if you are working on a large file, you might try reducing System memory or turning on the Virtual Memory. The big dictionary I use (240 Kb) loads properly on my Mega 4. Maybe you should try to load the dictionary before loading your CDK!? Regarding double sided printing, I would suggest you set up your documents as LEFT and RIGHT page (Double-sided). Then print all the LEFT pages, flip the stack and check orientation, then print the RIGHT pages. Doug, what Mario said about the CRI files :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 64 Mon Jul 05, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 02:01 EDT Mario: Befor I start, I want to let you know about my system setup. You see, my last upload was my first to a BBS portion of GEnie, so I didn't communicate my details as well as I could. But now I know a little more thatn I did, being able to utilize Aladdin and all, so here goes. My system consists of a Mega 4 with Jim Allen's Turbo 030 (with 4 megs TT ram, soon to be 16), and Crazy Dots 8 hooked to a NEC 4FG. My printers are a QMS- PS410 (which does HPLJ II) and the HPDJ 550C. I also own virtually every module of SL (except Mask, Photo CD, and SpeedLine). Thought I'd establish that while asking all these questions. Thanks for the info on Screen Calibration. Much of what you said in regards to accurate lighting was in a recent issue of Publish! Magazine. I also downloaded a demo of Palette Master (from Cyrel). Apparently this will allow you to change the parameters you speak of (any chance you guys will be selling it as a stand alone program, as you already sell the card?). Also note that my NEC 4FG has AccuColor controls, but I can't figure it out...yet. One quick question, how can I get that reference RGF TIFF without buying PhotoShop? But for now, I'm more concerned with matching swatch colors to my printed proof colors so I'll mess with it later. Which brings me to the next subject. About calibration of swatch colors to printed colors. Insult my 550C printer, eh? Just kidding. I know what you're saying, I'll never get perfect color, nor do I expect it. Since I posted last, I've taken some time to experiment changing color lines in the Color Sep module. I tried many combinations, including total inversion of all lines, and got no change in my color printout! Then it dawned on me that the beta version of the 550C printer came not only with a German module called LIN.CXM, but a .CK4 to optimize colors as well. This does work with my printer driver, and well (THANKS, Nathan!) Anyway, colors are now much closer, just some tweaking now, that's all. One question, however, about how these settings affect the accuracy of the final output by the professional printer. For instance (using FOCOLTONE colors for process output), my thought is that if I change a control/color line to match my printer, when it goes to film (assuming those control/color lines are saved with the file), will it then be off in final print based on my FOCOLTONE swatch colors? Or, is this what I am to expect? Am I being clear? Maybe just ignorant, beacuse I'm not changing original CMYK percentage values, just intensities/contrasts of them. By the way, put me on order for an Imagesetter and densitometer. (Just kidding) Thanks again, Tom Jr. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 65 Mon Jul 05, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 04:09 EDT Tom Jr. ...just a small additional thought about your questions of color, particularly focoltones and the 550c printer. I also use that printer, thought only for a rough proofing of color work that will later go to lino. Anyway, the other day I made a silly mistake in choosing the cymk values from the focoltone swatch book's listings. I wonder if you have ever done the same. In the first part of the book, on the pages that list the cymk values, there are two sections. One is for the screen colors (that's the one we need to use) and the other is for actual percentages of inks or pigments and is for the ink printshop. It's pretty easy to confuse the info in these two sections when working quickly, ...I did just that. Now I have the second section of ink precentages marked in red magic marker at the top of each page. Just a thought. On the spot colors question. I currently have a job using two spot colors. One will be process cyan and the other will be Pantone 032. In doing the layout, I used percentages of cyan for the cyan plate as expected and used percentages of magenta for the Pantone 032 plate. Now, 032 is a Pantone ink, right? But, the magenata plate will give me percents or 'screens'. The black and yellow plates could be used in the same manner as well, -as long as- there are no mixing of the the colors, just real spot colors. In this way I can use the color separtation module to separate all the plates, even though Adornment color is not working. This is a 'work around' and will only apply to certain types of jobs. I might add that in my case, I've choosen to use the raster generator to set the screen angle of both cyan and magenta plates to 45 degrees. I also might suggest that if you can, write to Doug Walters, (you'll see him in this RT) and get his LDW spreadsheet for the raster generator. With this in hand, you will be able to print out a list of the truly useable percentages of cymk for any given combination of DPI, LPI and screen angle. In other words, there is no point in specifying a percent of c,y,m or k that can't actually be handled by a given combination. This will particularly be true on the 550c because of its 300 dpi resolution! BTW, I'm very pleased with the improvement of the 550c over the 500c. Durn useful tool for the price! It would be nice to get an improved printer driver out of DMC for it however. %^) RSN? The real problem with using screens or percents of a single c,y,m or k value for spot colors is having some sense of what say 25.1% of a given Pantone ink will look like when printed. As far as I know, you can only find this out from someone with that experience, though one of the Pantone guide books may show some %'s of the inks. One more 'trick' about spot color and I'm otta here... : I only do this when I just have to have a better look at the layout either on screen or via the 550c proofs. Rather than use only one version of a color in the color table, I will make many versions, each one named for its use in the layout. i.e., eyeball blue, sky blue one, sky blue two, ball blue, etc. Then for screen viewing or 550c proofing, I can assign whatever temporary cymk color that will 'look' correct. When I think it's all done, layoutwise, I make a copy of the document, and go into the color table and re-assign each of these to what I will actually use for the lino output. For example, ball blue might be a mix of c, y and k for on-screen, and get changed to 42% of only C for the lino. Again, this technique (read work-around) refers to the above mentioned spot color method. hope some of this is useful..... best of luck! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 66 Mon Jul 05, 1993 M.TERRY5 [Martin] at 20:13 EDT Lou and Mario- Thanks for your response on my questions... I'm gearing up for part 2 so get ready, I just have to make some more notes in my manual! But for now I have these: Concerning the import of GEM images (vector), If I import a GEM file and it uses the GEM fill patterns, the pattern themselves seem to be defined in a fixed size and do not size when a vector frame is sized. For example, lets say I have a GEM graphic that is simply a square filled with a diagional pattern (like so: /////) In a large size the square has many diagional lines which make up the pattern, but when resized to a smaller size, the proportions between the lines of the pattern do not change and therefore the square has less visable diagional lines making up the pattern. Seems to defeat the vector graphic's purpose, or am I getting this all wrong? If this is how GEM defines a vector fill pattern, how do other programs deal with the same situation (for example, Outline Art)? Also I got very tired of Calamus telling me it needed a specific font when importing GEM graphics when I knew that there were in fact NO fonts used in the graphic file. After some snooping I found the file GEMCIV.SET in the DRIVERS folder. This file seems to be mapping standard GDOS font ID numbers to a particular .CFN font file. So if the .GEM file has GDOS font 02 saved in it's definition Calamus will look up 2 in the table and load the assigned .CFN in its place. Is this true? It's unfortunate that these SET files (there are more) aren't mentioned in the manual AT ALL. Can this one be modified without undo fear? I have a good deal of interest in the PKS Macros and I'm currently trying to get a grip on their scope and use. I'm particularly interested in the ability with the Compiler to define your own, and my question is where can I obtain a complete list of the commands that may be utilized? And the mnemonics for the keyboard keys? for example: /*************** Macro file contents ****************** [S]ClrHome cgoto(%,0) "Zum Ende der Datei" ^ ^ ^ | | | Key to assign Command (1 of Annoying unconverted German Text macro to many apparently) for "To end of file" :) Again, nothing in the documentation about this file or its contents. I for one would, however, enjoy any information about it. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 67 Mon Jul 05, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:42 EDT Terry, re the GEM fill patterns: what you are seeing is the way it works. These are the standard 36 GEM fill patterns. If you were to design your own fills, they would size proportionally. Regarding the GEMCIV.SET... you can rename the original and make a new copy. Use a text editor to change all the fonts to one that you have. Since most GEM graphics are unlikely to have been saved with a font, the effect should be negligible. You are also correct that this SET file was not mentioned in the manual. It was another one of those late enhancements that arrived just before shipping the release version. I think it might be useful to add this information to our README. Thanks for mentioning it. As for PKS Macros, Mike Valent has put together the complete comprehensive set and designed an accompanying keyboard template. I would suggest you take a look at these files: No. File Name Type Address YYMMDD Bytes Access Lib ----- ------------------------ - ------------ ------ ------- ------ --- 26921 PKSINDEX.LZH X A.VALENT 921213 52352 68 30 Desc: Reference of all key bindings 26922 PKSMASTR.LZH X A.VALENT 921213 29440 80 30 Desc: Update macros for PKS Write 23067 PSKMACRO.ARC X A.VALENT 920307 2176 116 30 Desc: SL'ers - PKS macros in English! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 68 Mon Jul 05, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 20:54 EDT Orca, Thanks for your help. I'll give it a shot. If I understand right. just use CMYK as though they were 4 spot colors, just change the screen angles. I will, however, as Doug Walters for his spreadsheet for the Raster Generator. I'm in agreement about the 550C. A friend of mine has the 500C,and those pitiful balcks made from CMY mixing - YECCH! I trust Nathan will have a good, solid version of the driver soon. BTW, I asked Nathan, let me ask you, too. I've tried changing the .CDD to allow me to print on letter/legal paper rather than A4/B5 using PRINTGEN.PRG, but I can't. Using the PRINTER.RAW file supplied with the beta driver gives me an "internal error" message, and using the .RAW file that came with SL won't even let me load it. I do notice that particular .RAW file does not include CMYK-TIFF as a choice of printer, so... any ideas? In regards to percentages of spot colors, I have some resources to help me with the accuracy of such, and have done screens using another program. I'm just waiting for SL to be able to do it, and was looking for a cheap work- around. As per making your own versions of colors for proof work, that's exactly what I did for a presentation to a chic cafe owner. It's good for the presentation, but now I have to go back and reassign the colors to actual values, just like you. Here's hoping spot color for SL will be here soon. Thanks again, hope to return the favor sometime. Sincerly, Tom Jr. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 69 Mon Jul 05, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 21:01 EDT Doug Walter, Orca tells me you have a LDW spreadsheet for the raster generator on SL. Could I get a copy, please. You can send it E-Mail to T.HENRY12. Thanks, Tom Jr. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 70 Tue Jul 06, 1993 VORTEXT at 05:05 EDT Lou, Thanks. But I'm aware of the ASCII on/off switch. Problem is - it's ON! ASCII entry just stopped working is all. For some reason, if I type ALT numberpad 171, I get nothing. Furthermore, if I use the macro for opening quote 1, I end up with a 1/2 in the actual text instead of the quote mark. It used to work properly, now it doesn't and I can't figure why. The crosshair thing has always been a problem. Lou, try this. Create a text frame, or load a doc. Go into the text ruler editor (with the cross-hairs on) and select a ruler. Now change the paragraph spacing then with the cross-hairs over the screen, press the right mouse button to reformat the text and let me know what happens. That's when it dissapears for me and I need to move the mouse until shows over at the icons to get it back. Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 71 Tue Jul 06, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 08:12 EDT Daniel, I have never encountered the situation you described re ASCII entry. How about recopying your original CALAMUS.SET file and giving it a go again. I can't think of another suggestion to make at this point. I just had a thought: go to any input field (like the one found in the Search and Replace field) and hit the [Control][Esc] to bring up the character set. Then click the 1/2 symbol for opening quotes and see if it installs the proper character. Other than that, are you sure the font actually has the proper quotes? What font is it? Back to the disappearing cross hair: I was able to replicate your bug report. I will send a memo to DMC. Thanks for finding it. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 72 Tue Jul 06, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 22:37 EDT Daniel, It may also be that the font you are using has character in those positions that are different from the fonts you have previously used ... Muchas gracias Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 74 Wed Jul 07, 1993 VORTEXT at 01:39 EDT Re: ASCII entry. Thanks for the thoughts Lou and Mario. It is the wrong tree however. It doesn't matter what font i use, I get no response. I think I'll just have to reload and see what happens. I was hoping to avoid that remedy. Once I get my system set, I'd like to keep it that way. Of course...if I had had a back-up .SET file... Oh well. Maybe this time, once I have everything right, I'll save a copy off to disk. Really strange though. Daniel Well, the [c][esc] method in the search n replace works. Also, the [c]1 macro is working properly. I just don't get it sometimes, really. I'll use it that way until something else pops up I suppose. Still, a back up might be wise. Hmmm. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 75 Wed Jul 07, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 01:54 EDT Daniel, some months ago I remember someone discussing a problem that was traced back to a corrupted SET file. (I think it was Stephen Samuels). Anyway, when he copied the original SET file (or was it a backup or alternate version) the problem was corrected. Sorry, it is too late for me to check back through 26 megs of archives! The fact that you can access the correct character leads me to believe there is a possible internal RAM conflict. Have you added any new ACC, AUTO or CPX programs lately? In fact, are you using any? Morgan, the I-beam cursor only appears in the text frame. Your problem is in the PKS editor, right? Sounds like your space bar is somehow tied to one of the deadkeys. Let me explain. In the System Parameters module the bottom options allow you to use certain punctuation to accent regular letters. For all selected letters, you need to hit an arrow key, or the space bar to use the punctuation character on its own. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 76 Wed Jul 07, 1993 A.VALENT [Mike] at 07:43 EDT Daniel, check the font. The macro's actual command is "insc(171)" - that inserts the ASCII 171 character. If your font doesn't conform to the Calamus convention of character placement, that would explain getting a different character. (there is no "1/2" character in a standard Calamus font) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 77 Thu Jul 08, 1993 VORTEXT at 00:45 EDT Mike - I realize there is no '1/2' character. So imagine my surprise when it showed up on screen! Anyway, the fonts involved are DMC fonts, just to clarify that point. Lou, I'll run back through the ACC's. Might be one of those acting up. Ya never know. Daniel 26 megs? C'mon, ya read fast don't ya? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 78 Thu Jul 08, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 01:31 EDT Daniel .. Please be specific. Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 80 Thu Jul 08, 1993 M.SHANNON [Morgan] at 02:25 EDT Lou, The bad news is: Eliminating all the deadkeys doesn't help. The good news is: space-bar works like a charm?!@#%! Got any ideas? I'm out of 'em on this one, I can't figure out where it started... hmmm Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 81 Thu Jul 08, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 08:44 EDT Morgan, I saw that dictionary file but I don't think there is a way to append it other than inputting each word. Mario created the big SPELL.CWB by loading an ASCII dicitionary and literally 'spellchecking' it in SL - and clicking OVERWRITE a million times to add those words. Do you have the SPELL.CWB? On the [ALT]Spacebar, seems like you found a new macro. I suggest you look in the Key Bindings selector box to see what SPC macros may be stored there. It is possible that you have inadvertently turned on the Macro Recorder [Alt][Esc] and created this macro. To get back to all original settings, copy the CALAMUS.SET file from your original disks to your directory that has CALAMUS.PRG. Daniel, the 1/2 character is part of the Atari system character set. Its ASCII position (171) is used for the opening quote in all DMC fonts (I know you knew that). Somehow the system character is being accessed. I will ask Mario for further information when I see him later. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 82 Thu Jul 08, 1993 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 21:14 EDT Here are some interesting "complications" I've been encountering with Calamus SL. By "complication", I mean that they aren't really problems. But before we go any further, what my system is and the project. I'm using a 4/65 Falcon030 with all of SL on a 30meg partition, with an SVGA monitor in 768x576x16. I'm working on a two page landscape brochure in two colors with about 5 fonts and maybe 10 text styles. The pages contain 2 vector objects, and text from 2.5 point to 60 point sizes. The document is 80k on disk. And now for, the "complications" o For some reason, the color black converts to 100,100,100,0 in CMYK. Wouldn't that turn out to be a dark brown? o Adornment Color - won't activate, am I missing somthing? o 5.5.2.17 page 34, I would assume these icons to convert monochrome, Grayscale, and Color images don't work. o The Elongated Cross Hairs like to vanish occasionally. Most of the time going up to the drop downs fixes this, but sometimes the only way to restore the mouse cursor is by quitting the program. o After using PKS-Write editor, the frame fails to update after a placing the text in the frame. I believe it tries to redraw the frame, but doesn't completely. o I've read 5.6.3 about tabs, but just how does one get the regular typewritter style tab? o I can't seem to edit the hyphenation or spelling dictionaries. I click on that little dictionary and the mouse turns into a bee, and then -- nothing. I end up rebooting. (did I mention I loaded both dictionaries first?) and lastly! o Speed Line is quite nice, but it has alot of trouble with simpler objects. I've tried nearly every basic setting, but everything ends up quite distorted. Now, for the problem. I'll be working on something for about an hour and then the whole thing will freeze. No mouse arrow, no disk access, nothing. It happens mostly during zooms greater 800%, while reformatting text, or editing existing text. My solution is to use virtual memory (since it would seem likely that the program is running out of memory), and then this runs into problems. I will run into a "Out of Memory", and then the program crashes. It doesn't happen often enough to make it annoying, but it does happen enough to take a little off the program's otherwise spotless record. In fact, one of the largest problems with Calamus SL may be the fact it is so powerful, yet you don't get that impression because everything is very easy to use, basically, one would think it would take much more to do the same things. Sean Dougherty Two Worlds Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 83 Fri Jul 09, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 01:04 EDT Sean, thanks for the detailed post. I can answer some of the questions for you. o For some reason, the color black converts to 100,100,100,0 in CMYK. Wouldn't that turn out to be a dark brown? Is that what you are seeing? or what is printing? K is the black value. If it is 0, the color should be brown on the screen and the printout. o Adornment Color - won't activate, am I missing somthing? Not active yet. o 5.5.2.17 page 34, I would assume these icons to convert monochrome, Grayscale, and Color images don't work. Not active yet. o The Elongated Cross Hairs like to vanish occasionally. Most of the time going up to the drop downs fixes this, but sometimes the only way to restore the mouse cursor is by quitting the program. This is a bug that has recently been corrected. Look for it in the next update of the program. o After using PKS-Write editor, the frame fails to update after a placing the text in the frame. I believe it tries to redraw the frame, but doesn't completely. This can happen if you are changing text styles. The text flow to frame 'forgets' some lines. The fix is to flow out to the editor and then back to the text frame. o I've read 5.6.3 about tabs, but just how does one get the regular typewritter style tab? You have to manually set tabs on the text ruler or in the Edit Ruler dialog box. To use them, just hit the [Tab] key, like a typewriter. These are Sticky Tabs and there is a very good USER file in the library. 27804 - STICKY.LZH o I can't seem to edit the hyphenation or spelling dictionaries. I click on that little dictionary and the mouse turns into a bee, and then -- nothing. I end up rebooting. (did I mention I loaded both dictionaries first?) Sounds like you are using the big SPELL.CWB. It takes a very long time to load (7-10 minutes). If you use the shorter ENGLISH.CWB it will load in 3 minutes. o Speed Line is quite nice, but it has alot of trouble with simpler objects. I've tried nearly every basic setting, but everything ends up quite distorted. You have to experiment to get settings that meet your needs. Look closely at the samples in the manual. >I'll be working on something for about an hour and then the whole thing >will freeze. No mouse arrow, no disk access, nothing. It happens mostly >during zooms greater 800%, while reformatting text, or editing existing >text. Depending on the length of your text chain, it can take quite a while to reformat at high magnfications. This problem also sounds like a RAM clearing problem. It could also be a CPX, DA or AUTO conflict that get's triggered by a particular function. The next update of SL will be more bullet-proof. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 84 Fri Jul 09, 1993 A.VALENT [Mike] at 07:38 EDT Daniel, does 'showed up on screen' mean you see it in PKS (which you should), or in the layout window? As the DMC fonts have no '1/2' character, if that's what's showing in the layout window (and in printing) then you have an electronic miracle on your hands. PKS uses the system font - that does not conform to Calamus's ASCII slot usage. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 85 Fri Jul 09, 1993 VORTEXT at 08:08 EDT Well, as far as the ASCII entry goes, Popit is the problem. Somewhere within that little acc, I must have a conflict because when I shut Popit off, the ASCII entry works again. However, I know people use Popit with SL. So, I guess it must be an assignment conflict. Anyone with Popit have any ideas? Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 86 Fri Jul 09, 1993 VORTEXT at 08:33 EDT Mike, I guess we should bless my machine, because it looks like a miracle must have happened here. It was indeed very strange, for the 1/2 appeared within the text upon the page after reflowing back from the editor. Very strange indeed. And now, of course, it seems I can't get it to happen again. Must of been some very good drugs that night. Sean, as to the dissappearing cross-hair. For me it seems to happen primarily when SL reformats after a ruler change. Move the mouse around until the arrow reshows over at the icon menu to the left. Sometimes this takes a little playing around, but it always shows up. (At least it does for me.) Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 87 Fri Jul 09, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 08:56 EDT Daniel, I believe that Stephen uses PopIt. Why not compare notes with him. I seem to recall another report about conflicts involving the ALT key for ASCII entry.... does PopIt use the ALT for its macros? Regarding the disappearing crosshair... Thanks for the report. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 88 Sat Jul 10, 1993 VORTEXT at 03:20 EDT Lou, Glad to hear about the bug fix. Now I'm just waiting for the REAL good news. Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 89 Sat Jul 10, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 11:12 EDT Daniel, you'll have to wait a tad bit longer for that news . And if you had it to do over what would you do this time around? Thanks Morgan Lou, OK, fixed the (space)-bar problem even tho' I don't have an inkling of how it began (probably the sequence you suggested. As 'great' as it is, I've always been toooo dumb to get the Printer Driver Generator thingy to work for me... I would assume though that someone who wrote it or actually knew how to use it could fix up a printer driver for - anything- very quickly. This, of course, leaves me mystified as to why it takes so long to get fully functional, correctly working, English speaking printer drivers! VORTEXT: on yer ascii problem ...did you happen to install Popit lately? The version before the very latest release caused the ascii by numeric entry to fail, not only in SL but system wide also. The culprit was the auto prg. called REGACC.PRG. It has since been fixed and works fine. Just a thought??? Try numeric ascii entry in STeno and see if it works there. This will tell you if it is isolated to SL or if it is indeed system wide. *** PS. folks, I just called VORTEXT and this indeed is the problem. Daniel and Lou: to help your surely overworked memory , the SET file problem came at the time of the last update of SL. It is this: In the older, original version I used to be able to edit the SET files with a text editor, but in the update this caused corrupted SET files. The only way to alter them safely is to use Save Setup in SL. I wish one could still do it the text editor way!!! Add it to the 'list'???? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 92 Sun Jul 11, 1993 J.HICKEY6 at 00:51 EDT The mystery of the 1/2 can be resolved if one examines the old(1.09N) Times font vis-a-vis the CGTimes font that comes with SL. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 93 Sun Jul 11, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 01:34 EDT Lou and the user that wanted to add the extra dictionary file to SL's Dic: With a file like that where you know you want to add all the items in the text, and also know they are all spelled correctly, it is almost tooooo easy! You don't have to hit Return for each word, ..well not exactly. Just import the text file into SL, open it into to Text editor window, load the Dictionary of your choice and do a spell check on the whole text. As soon as it stops on a word, click the [OVERWRITE] option in the dialog. That make it the default until you click [PROCEED]... so, now with Overwrite defaulted, just sit on the Return key. It will work so fast the you will barely ever see the dialog box! You can put about a zillion words into the Dic. in a minute or two! Be sure and save the Dic. file afterwards ...and you might want to save it under a new name just to keep your original Dic. intact. BTW, that file you pointed out is a nice list! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 94 Sun Jul 11, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 01:47 EDT Hmmmm...ya larn sumthin avaryday! Here's what I just larned: If you have the text editor window open and do a spell check on the complete text (as if there was some other choice ) and -then- type a newly misspleeed word into the editor and run another check, it won't be found. To make it find that wurd you have flow the text back to the frame and then once again back to the editor! My, my... SX Lou, whachatink 'bout dat? Concerning the 1/2 (and other ascii oddities) ...I think there is some confusion going on about the actual ascii characters and some of the characters you may see in the SL editor windows. There are two (you need them both) Help files that will explain most of this. One is DEJAVUDU.LZH, two is DEJAVUTU.LZH. Remember, they are totally separate files, each containing a unique CFN font. Print them out, cut and paste them together and hang that paper someplace near your screen! (You're referring to the accelerator, right?) -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 97 Mon Jul 12, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:37 EDT Nathan; Sorry to keep bothering you with questions about Calamus S, but I have a few more: 1. After duplicating the Command Box/Area, how can one remove the duplicate without quitting Calamus? 2. After choosing "Show Text Flow," how does one get rid of the black rectangle that results? 3. Just curious about screen redraw speed: I realize that Calamus S does things differently from Calamus, but one thing I noticed is that initial screen redraws seem considerably slower than in Calamus. I ran a comparison on my ST-equipped Calamus just to see. I obtained the following results (definitely NOT a scientific study, but revealing all the same): through); 14 seconds (2nd time through). Cache masking didn't seem to make any difference on the ST. seconds (1st time through)/cache masking ON; 9 seconds (1st time through)/cache masking OFF. Of course, the second time through in each case, the redraws were too fast to measure; but each time a change was made on the page, the slow redraw reoccured. drew in 16 seconds (1st time through) with cache masking ON, and 11 seconds (1st time through) with cache masking OFF (2nd time through, too fast to measure, of course). From this, it seems that Calamus S redraws on the ST are significantly slower than Calamus at all times. Even on the quicker Falcon they are slower, even in the faster ST Compatibility mode on the first time through. Obviously, the speed is GREATLY increased on subsequent page redraws....until an editing change is made, then slowdown again. I'm just wondering whether these comparisons seem more-or-less correct to you, or am I doing something wrong on the Falcon/Calamus S combination to slow things down? 4. Also, I found one small error in the manual. On pages 4/5 it describes the use of the Alternate or Control + key-click to quickly enlarge an area of a document. On page 5 it then says that clicking a second time using EITHER Control or Alternate will return the page to normal. I found this to be incorrect. Using Control or Alternate in this way merely shifts the image to the side a bit. The proper proceedure seems to be to hold down BOTH Control and Alternate while clicking the mouse.... Thanks, Bob deWitt ---- Bob sent me these questions in email and I directed him to the bulletin board instead so that we can all participate. 1. You cannot. For some reason they cannot be reomved at this time. I hope to see this corrected shortly. 2. I'm not sure of your question. Clicking on the same icon again will turn off the "show tect flow". Hitting the clear home key will redraw the screen. 3. This part of your question was cut and past garbled. ;-) But obviously it has to do with speed. What are the settings you have used in your Systems Parameter module please and what hardware are you using exactly? The settins for ST RAM/ TT RAM if applicable and VECTOR OUTOUT BUFFER can dramatically affect your speed in many areas. 4. Thank you re: zoom and click. I know that this used to work. I just checked and you are correct. I wonder what happened. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. ----- The original Moniterm board was designed by Jay Craswell for Moniterm. It was created to fit into the Mega bus used in the Mega ST's. The Mega STe's switched to a VME slot instead. I believe that Jay designed a card for this slot as well. Since I am a relative late- comer to S/SL, I didn't want to bore other longer-time users by asking questions which had already been asked--and answered; and 2. If I didn't want to do that, I also didn't want to download a year's worth of SL dialogue in an effort to find answers to the questions I had; so, I just thought I'd take a short-cut and ask you directly. However, from now on I shall observe the etiquette of the board and post my questions here. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 103 Tue Jul 13, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 22:56 EDT Bob, trust me, none of us are at the same place at the same time and all of us enjoy helping out. :-) Please do not hesitate to ask us anything at all and start yelling if you do not get an answer quickly. Thanks. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 104 Tue Jul 13, 1993 M.SHANNON [Morgan] at 23:08 EDT Harry, Right, I meant the accelerator, and thanks for the TIP. Morgan Lou, Phantom is right! What a pain in the thumb. I'll check with Jim too. Thanks Morgan Steve, "Hands on" is about the only way to get the "ffel" of the modules and their abilities. All I can tell you is that they ALL work if you take the time to learn them. Right Lou?:^) Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 105 Wed Jul 14, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 02:45 EDT Morgan, ...so you have 200 conner too, eh? Nice drives, no? I'm not sure about why you care about the identical, or double use of words in the list. I say this because of my own uses for the list, that of increasing various dictionaries. The only ones I care about increasing are SL's and Word Perfect's. In both these cases, the double words in the list will not be added to the dictionary, since it knows when it has the word in it. In the case of WP, even if you have forced it to include the same word more than once (which can be done with WP), the SPELLER.PRG will optimise the dictionary and clear all that up beautifully, along with making the spell checks run faster. SL seems to have a very fast dic. and spell check. I just wish it did a bit more in the way of providing suggested spellings. I don't know of a utility to double check for twice used words throughout a text list without doing it word by word... which of course would not work for you! %^) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 106 Wed Jul 14, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 03:27 EDT Speaking of spellcheckers and importing WordPerfect files... I read an article today that says that wordprocessors and DTP programs use different kinds of tabs. In WPs the tabs are relative. In DTP they are absolute. According to this article, most DTP programs require the user to do a lot of reformatting when importing tabulated columnar text. Does anyone have further information? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 107 Wed Jul 14, 1993 A.VALENT [Mike] at 05:57 EDT Morgan, the Moniterm is driven by a circuit board that will fit only in an old- style Mega. Same applies to the T-16. The only difficult part of your project will be replacing the Mega's 68000 with a socket for the T-16. I'd suggest contacting Jim Allen once you have all of the components and ask him if he'd install the T-16 and check it out with the Moniterm board. The Mega/T-16/Moniterm combo makes a very satisfactory 'low-end' platform for Calamus SL. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 108 Wed Jul 14, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 06:53 EST > In WPs the tabs are relative. < I don't think so. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 109 Wed Jul 14, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 14:55 EDT I will be uploading this as a text file to the Press Release library in a few minutes for those that do not frequent the bulletin board but in the meantime, I think I'll place it out here first. We have been busy. We have been working. And this is the result: Press Release Toronto, Ontario July 14, 1993 DMC Publishing is pleased to announce a new upgrade to Calamus SL. The overall performance of Calamus SL has been dramatically improved. In addition, we are very happy with the significant features that have now been activated as well as the new features and modules that we are including. The new version of Calamus SL will include the following: 1. An upgraded Text Module which now includes both an activated Anchor Frame function and an activated Leader Tab function that allows the use of any character as your assigned Leader Tab character. The module also includes an improved Spellchecker and separate Hyphenation dictionaries, improved Vertical Text Alignment and improved M-Space handling. New features include the ability to insert and search Comments, manual kerning, inserting text style and text ruler information. 2. The new ROTATE.CXM module now gives us the ability to rotate Raster Graphics in any degree with or without anti-aliasing. This means that if you rotate a graphic that has straight lines, anti-aliasing will smoothen the settings and remove stepping. 3. The new COL_CONV.CXM Color List Converter module generates a color list from graphics that have been imported from Outline Art and other sources. It can also generate a list from free colors designed within the existing document. 4. The new COMPRESS.CXM is a compression module designed to save you storage space by compressing bitmap images within your document. Note: Calamus documents, CDK's, saved with compressed bitmap images using this module, will automatically uncompress those images when the document is reloaded into Calamus SL. 5. The new CYMKSWAP.CXM module swaps color planes. 6. The new LIN.CXM Linearity module allows you to set color values optimised for your particular printer. This module will be of special interest to those of you with an HP550C for example. 7. The RASTGEN.CXM Raster Generator module has been upgraded to include the ability to set Raster caches. 8. New drivers that will be enclosed with this upgrade for Calamus SL include: GEMIMG export, CVG export, a RAW import driver for bit planes, an improved TIFF driver, an improved TARGA driver, an RPS driver for Repro Studio and an improved GEM Metafile driver. 9. Set Layout/Working Area has seen some major changes. The automatic generation of both registration marks and crop marks is now activated, as are color plane names, double-page overlap, user definable settings and master page printing. 10. The new selectable document option, added as the far right pull-down menu, now allows you to click on the document you wish to access from the displayed list of all documents present in memory. There are other new modules expected shortly, but we've decided not to wait. All of the above are ready in-house and available for shipping right now. Look for a further press release in the not to distant future announcing the release of at least 4 new modules. The cost for all of the above, the latest and much improved Calamus SL as well as all of the new modules: ROTATE.CXM, COL_CONV.CXM, COMPRESS.CXM, CYMKSWAP.CXM, LIN.CXM, the upgraded TEXT.CXM, the upgraded RAS_GEN.CXM,the upgraded Set Layout/Working Area, the new Select Document and the new import/export drivers, on 3 disks, is US $75.00 or $95.00 CDN which includes shipping and insurance. Prices and configurations are subject to change without notice. Sincerely Nathan Potechin DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 110 Wed Jul 14, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 19:27 EDT Being a beta-tester has its pros and cons. On the pro side, one has the opportunity to see all the latest developments on a favorite piece of software and, occasionally, to suggest changes and improvements. On the con side, one is not able to share confidential information with the general userbase, some of whom are close friends, as well as knowledgable colleagues. Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to see a good number of the new developments for Calamus SL and now, finally, I can begin to tell you what is going to be available very shortly. To begin with, please read the Press Release that Nathan just posted here... or pick up a copy from the Library as soon as it is available. The PR covers a number of items which are new, as well as some features we have long been awaiting. Without further ado, I am pleased to share some observations on the newly- available upgrade for Calamus SL. (This is going to be a long post :-) (1) Leader Tabs work beautifully and, along with the sticky tab feature, you can create professional-looking lists using any available font character (or bullet) as the leader character. A picture might be easier :-) Frame Module ....................... 9 Page Module ....................... 12 Text Module ....................... 17 In the editor it would look like this: Frame Module 9[TAB] Page Module 12[TAB] Text Module 17[TAB] If you wished, you could replace the "." with the "_" underscore, or any other character available in the current font. (2) Index and Footnote Entry are now working with completely functional updating using the REFORMAT DOCUMENT function. You can now create footnote and endnote frames on any page; you can also create index frames that hold original page numbers and which can be updated when you reformat your document. This is a really professional feature that is highly configurable and it is finally working properly! (3) In MISCELLANEOUS SETTINGS, the Frame Cache functions have been optimized for speed and you can now configure them too! Caches are only created if a user-definable percentage of the selected frame type is visible. This really speeds up cache creation when working at high zoom factors. In the same dialog box you can choose to save the caches with your CDK! (4) You can now insert a COMMENT in your text. The comment window looks like any a regular editor window and you can store non-printing remarks about your work for your own reference. You can also search those comments for any text string located in the comment! (5) The dictionary functions have been separated and the alerts are much clearer. Two sets of icons exist for the loading, saving, editing and using _both_ the spellchecking and hyphenation functions. (6) Frame Anchors work now and you can lock any type of frame (including grouped frames) to a control code inserted at the cursor point. Once done, the anchored frame moves along with the text as your document reformats due to text or style changes. (7) Marking text blocks has been made easier than ever! Using a series of quick mouse-clicks you can mark a single word, a complete line, a complete paragraph or the entire text chain! 1 click - places the cursor (and does not affect any block) 2 clicks - marks the word under the cursor 3 clicks - marks the line under the cursor 4 clicks - marks the paragraph under the cursor 5 clicks - marks the entire text chain (8) The Set Layout/Working Area dialog now functions completely and even allows you to print the master page to check crop and registration marks by themselves. This function is described in your manual [5.4.1.6] but additional features have been added: <=> A guideline appears to show the amount of overlap. <=> You can define the line thickness of crop marks and the maximum size of registration marks. <=> There is a neat feature that allows the registration marks to proportionally resize according the size of the crop marks (which is regulated by your choice of margin settings). Please note that these LAYOUT features are only functional if you click on the new LAYOUT button at the bottom of the Print Document dialog. (9) Changing view modes was always a pain because you were presented with the x=0, y=0 display. If you were zooming in to a USER magnification, this meant having to scroll around the window to find the frame you wanted to work on. Now changing views will always display the same center point as the last view! (10) Minimum borders as defined by your printer driver now have rounded corners which makes it easier to assign borders on double pages. (11) When you turn off the display of any frame's contents, the frame is filled with a large X. This way it is easier to discern empty frames from invisible ones. It also makes it a lot easier to work on your document by turning off unneeded frame displays to reduce redraw times! (12) In the System Parameters module you can now select the TOS file selector. This means that fans of UIS and LGF can have access to their favorite file selectors and their myriad functions! (13) For you lucky Falcon owners there is an AUTO program called to improve your screen displays. (14) A new drop-down menu item shows a list of all loaded documents. You can click on any filename and it becomes the top window. (Don't forget that you can also cycle through documents using Control + Left Click on the window's Close Button.) (15) As for new modules, I think you will all enjoy the ROTATE module. It effectively removes the 90 degree limitation when rotating raster graphics. Its special anti-aliasing feature also creates picture perfect rotations of your graphics.... look ma, no jaggies! This little module also has an internal masking feature which automatically resizes your rotated frame to contain all contents. (16) The COL_CONV.CXM will capture all unlisted colors in your document and create the appropriate RGB equivalent on your color list. For example, when you import a color CVG from Outline Art 3.0, the colors do not show on any color list. Click this module and your graphic's colors are added to the list. From there you can click the color square of any color in the list and convert all values to CYMK, or other color systems in the SET COLOR/FILL PATTERN dialog box. The other use of this module is to capture any Free Colors in your document. The Free Color is the first color at the top of every color list. It is possible to have a different Free Color in each list. This module captures and lists them all on all lists - automatically! (17) COMPRESS.CXM is a transparent module. You can use it to compress the data from any picture frame or from all pictures in your document to save disk space. This is very useful for some of those huge color graphics! Another nice feature is the fact that pictures are automatically decompressed when you load your document! Well, I am sure I missed something but I can always post again later :-) There are also a few other goodies but I can't say anything about them right now :-) Hopefully they will be ready to discuss in the near future. In the meantime I would be most happy to discuss any of the items presented above. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 111 Thu Jul 15, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Jim] at 00:02 EDT Nathan, What about those of us who don't need most the modules you listed and just want the upgraded modules we already have? Count me in! Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 114 Thu Jul 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 01:30 EDT ALL of the above modules, new features etc. will be included with the Calamus SL upgrade at this time, all inclusive for the $75.00 Separately, those modules would probably total another few hundred dollars. If someone purchased a Calamus SL package, it would not include those modules so they would have to be purchased separately if they wished to do so. I look forward to receiving your order Morgan. Thanks. Jim ... In this case you'll get the whole ball of wax at a major discount. I hope that is ok with you. :-) Sincerely Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 115 Thu Jul 15, 1993 B.DEWITT [Nerd Perfect] at 01:30 EDT Sheesh, my wonderful question about the speed of Calamus S (yes, I admit it....I'm one of the few who owns "S," no "L"....) got so messed up that even I couldn't make any sense out of it when I reread it on the board! So here goes again, in a much abbreviated form: I am running Calamus S on a Falcon and it is significantly slower than my plain ol' Calamus/ST combination when drawing text onto a page (especially when loading a new file). This, of course, is not true when redrawing a page that has already been drawn (and has remained unchanged). I was just wondering if that is the way it's supposed to be, or if I have some settings wrong. (I am running it in ST High compatibility mode, with Screen Rasterization turned off and Vector Graphic cacheing turned off and Save Cache with Mask turned off). Secondly, I had a question about the Show Text Flow. When one selects this it places a black rectangle over whatever graphic the text in a chosen frame flows around. My question is: how does one get rid of the black rectangle? My solution so far is to trashcan the frame that is created to contain the black rectangle. Is that the proper way to do it? Bob deWitt ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 116 Thu Jul 15, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 01:45 EDT Morgan, the 75.00 US price is for *everything* - upgraded SL, new Text module, drivers, new modules, printed documentation - everything! I think this is a really good bundle (especially considering that there have already been 2 free updates). You're darned right about 'pretty exciting stuff' around here :-) BTW, are you interested in fonts? I believe the Font Promotion runs another month. This one is truly unbelievable - commercial typesetter fonts - your choice of 10 typefaces for only 100.00 US! These fonts regularly sell for 35.00 to 49.00 each!!! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 117 Thu Jul 15, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 02:03 EDT Bob, the FALCON8.PRG is going to significantly improve the quality and speed of your screen displays. It is included free with the just-announced upgrade bundle. Regarding the Show Text Flow... it took me a while to figure it out too! The Show Text Flow function actually creates VECTOR frame which can be altered using the VECTOR module. To delete it, use the trash can as you did. No trick involved :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 118 Thu Jul 15, 1993 S.BLACKBURN [STEVE] at 02:58 EDT >ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 00:12 EDT > >Steve, I will work on a text file with that info. B.DEWITT Very few of us have all the answers, and most often a simple question helps more people than you might imagine. I never get tired of reading solutions to Calamus problems, there are just Soooo many things to learn. Right Lou?:^) Time....you're probably right, its just that when I get into the different screens for some of the modules I'm lost. Speedline is an example. I don't have a clue as to what changes need to be made in the different boxes available. The raster generator is something else that is just over my head unfortunatly. There are a lot of options ready to use, but I don't know what I want to do with them. Suffice to say that the list of corrected program functions exceeds 6 pages of text. I would say that alone is worth half the upgrade price! I will post them as soon as I am able. BTW, thank you for your excellent list of suggestions regarding scrolling lists and the updating of same. I certainly hope they can be implemented by the next update. As you know, those suggestions would be useful in either version of Calamus so I am hopeful. Your pet peeve (and mine) was the buggy Search and Replace in PKS. Well, I have been working on new documentation for over a week and it has not yet failed nor has PKS crashed my system! You should try navigating them in German! :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 121 Thu Jul 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:58 EDT Bob ... I thought you were going to change your handle? :-) If you have activated your TEXT CACHE, then the first time the page is displayed on the screen, it caches or saves it into RAM memory. This takes much longer than if you deactivated the text cache. If you do deactivate the text cache, then the screen redraw will be much faster the first time but not as fast as a second redraw of the same page if you had it cached. Stephen ... You will not be disappointed. :-) Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 122 Thu Jul 15, 1993 SANDY.W [sysop] at 12:57 EDT The upgrade sounds great! Just curious. And now all these new upgrades for Calamus SL. I could scream. Looks like it will be a while before I'll be able to upgrade. But be sure that as soon as possible, I'll be doing it. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 130 Fri Jul 16, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 01:58 EDT Durn...#@%^$$*, on the wordperfect non-tab import! But, ya know, I've gotten so used to doing it 'my' way that I really don't give a big ....! Sandy, try this: the Calamus character for tab is ascii 9, in the system font it looks like a little clock, but in the Calamus editor it looks like a tab arrow. So...when you have a WP doc. and are in WP, prepare a special copy for import to SL, by doing a search and replace for the Tabs, replace them with asci 9. This can't be done, either in the WP special characters menu, or you can enter from the keyboard with Alt. 9 on Tos 2.06 and above. Just pay mind to where you want the spaces between tabs to go, so that they conform to the Calamus rules for 'sticky tabs'. It is really pretty easy. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 131 Fri Jul 16, 1993 S.RAMIREZ at 02:01 EDT Nathan: Thanks for the press release on the Calamus SL upgrade/update. It sure is quite a deal with all of those modules. However I have one concern (You just knew that someone was going to bring this up!). There are features that are still not functioning on my current version of SL (28/08/92 or 08/28/92) such as leader tabs and the spell checker. Nathan, when I placed my order for the original SL upgrade from 1.09N I did it expecting that the advertised features would be working. When they were not working I was assured by you and others at DMC that these were being taken care of. I assumed that this meant that when the were activated, they would be available to all registered users at no cost except for a nominal shipping fee. Well, now there is a new version of SL that has many of these previously inactive features up and working. But to get these working features not only do I have to use external modules but I have to pay $75.00? C'mon Nathan! I realize that for $75 I am getting some extras, but I am not interested in those extras (though I do agree that they are a steal at $75/US) I am only interested in having the inactive features of my current (standard) version of SL working. I don't think that I should have to pay an upgrade fee for what I and many other SL users need, an update to fix what doesn't work! Please let me know how much the shipping is for only the fixes to the original program (The one I paid over $200 to upgrade). I would like to have the extra goodies (which I do agree are worth the $75) but I don't have the money for that at this time. Nathan, I appreciate your hard work and that of the rest of the DMC staff. However I must voice my opinion on this matter. I hope to receive a favorable response from you. And BTW, sorry for the long post. I never saw an add for Calamus that mentioned or suggested the current version would do leader tabs for example (one thing I am glad is in the new version of Calamus). Every program grows and gets better (or dies). >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 133 Fri Jul 16, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 10:47 EDT Glenn .. What can I say, sell the house. :-) Thanks for your posts on Word Perfect TABS. I don't use the program myself (Word Perfect) so I appreciate when those that do take the time to share their knowledge, thanks. Sam .. The August 93 version of Calamus SL comes as stated. There are many activated features that were previously greyed out areas, many enhancements, improvements and brand new additions, outside of all the new modules. I cannot separate them out. A great deal of time and effort went into preparing this upgrade. It is well worth the price. I have done many free updates over the years. I cannot do so at this time. It will be up to you to decide whether you wish to upgrade or not. I cannot force you to do so but I can certainly recommend that you give it serious consideration. With any professional application of this level of sophistication, there are associated costs involved. I say that with no trepidation about you TT users out there because most of my work has been ON the TT. So far I have had two crashes in about 80 hours. With the automatic backup running, no work was lost. My favorite features so far include the Crop and Registration Marks, the Leader Tabs and the Rotate module. Not far behind is the Search and Replace feature in PKS Write. There are also a number of new drivers which should be fun. The ESM graphics are very impressive. I will be watching closely in a few days to see what you folks report. The manual for the Text module has been completely rewritten to reflect the changes. This will be a pull-and-replace deal if Nathan has his way :-) I also discovered a neat tip I'm going to give you... for free! You can dramatically decrease disk space on your saves by going to page one of a document, flowing your text into the editor and back out to the frame. By not going to later pages, Calamus does not refomat your layouts. On the above- mentioned manual chapter, a 430,000 byte file shrunk to 103,000 bytes. Amazing. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 139 Sat Jul 17, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:41 EDT In Defense of ISD: I've read several messages here concerning the $75.00 upgrade charge for Calamus SL and felt it time to add my two-cents worth. First, ISD/DMC has an excellent track record when it comes to correcting shortcomings in their products (e.x.: Calamus 1.09N). Let's face it _no_ software is bug-free. From a programming perspective there's a lot of "moving parts" in Calamus SL and problems are to be expected. Thus far, ISD has provided FREE upgrades that have made substantial progress toward providing a stable software platform that competes favorably with those of the "DOS Box" and Mac world. When one considers the costs involved, free upgrades have got to be substantial. Consider the disks, mailing, and labor folks. Now compare this to the DOS and Mac world. The fact of the matter is that NO software developer can afford to continually provide free upgrades ad infinatum. Was Calamus priced exhorbitantly when it came out? Certainly not when you compare it to the other platforms. The fact of the matter is ISD has offered excellent value, and good business sense says you simply can't go on supplying free upgrades and remain in business. I would like to see them remain a viable entity supplying a level of support that I consider unparalleled in the Atari market. The fact is that the capabilities of Calamus SL have expanded beyond the initial release version and there is a cost for continued development. Even at that we _still_ enjoy greater "power without the price." Consider where we'd be if ISD ceased further development and simply maintained the "status quo" as many other developers have done. Personally, I prefer progress. Nathan has my order and I consider it a bargain. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 140 Sat Jul 17, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 08:28 EDT >I also discovered a neat tip I'm going to give you... for free! Steve (Blackburn), your question on the Photo CD import and raster generator function is something that can be easily stated. To Import a Photo CD file you first need an XA compatible CD-ROM drive unit that is compatible with your atari. We will then provide you (at a small cost), an import filter to access the PCD files and their five resolutions (I must point out however that your Atari must have the appropriate memory capabilities for handling the various file sizes contained in the Photo CD format, sizes range from approx 300K to 24 meg per file). once you have the PCD file in your document you then use the raster generator to generate the halftone settings you require remember that a 300DPI laser printer is useless for screens above 55 LPI for greater line screens you should always send your files to a service bureau which can give you screens above that up to 200 LPI. (Our Ultre is rated to 133LPI but can give better than that for some projects). A very good User 2 User tip was uploaded to Library 30 for this very module try downloading and reading it. You provide the correct spelling. You Spanish dictionary file does not need to be converted to CTD to use. Import the file and run the Spellchecker; use the OVERWRITE key to add each Spanish word to your new dictionary and save it as SP**.CWB. I would like to use them to add spot color (a second color to a document). But it wouldn't be possible on an 8x11 sheet would it since I would be using the full sheet for the document? You are exactly right about the Letter size page. Obviously your layout page must be smaller than your paper size if you are going to use the crop and registration marks. These tools are most useful to people printing to film or typesetter roll paper. Or you could be printing half pages for booklets.... You can define your crop marks as small or as large as you wish. I guess you could create a document page that was 8.0 x 10.5 and use .25 margins for your crop and registration marks. Your request for spot colors is understood. I think Doug or Stephen have recently posted methods for doing spot colors. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 161 Tue Jul 20, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:06 EDT Lou: I don't LZH the Calamus CDK's from within Calamus. SAK :) Steve (S.BLACKBURN)...If you design a page that is 8.5 X 11 and print it with LEGAL size paper in your printer, your register marks could be located at the top and bottom portions of th page. It is described in th Page module. However, there are other choices in the newer version of the Page module you will get with your upgrade. Now you can set a maximum size for the registration marks (they change in proportion to the size of your margin) and you can also set the thickness of the crop mark. On our most recent manual pages, we are using .5000 for left, right, top and bottom; .5000 for Overlap, .2500 for line thickness. The manual pages are 5.85 x 8.28. When I print to letter size paper, everything prints on the page. On letter size paper, I can print a page with crop marks so long as the total width of the page plus left and right margins is equal to or less than 8.5 inches. The same formula applies to the length of the page. If I wanted to output letter size with crop marks, I would have to print to larger than letter size paper, such as an imagesetter. Have you checked the NEW_SL.LZH file in the library. It is the actual README for the new version. The simplest solution would be mount your 8-1/2" x 11" work on art layout boards. These usually feature a grid in non-repo blue for postioning along with registration marks. Talk to you printer. Some will even provide you with the boards. My printer is limited to 11" x 17" tabloid work. So typically what we'll do is bleed off one edge and then he'll trim for full bleed. This does result in off-sized newsletter, but they really aren't that uncommon when you get to looking around. You can hold your costs down be limiting the number of edges for full bleeds and subsequent trimming. You _can_ achieve what you want to do using your present equipment. The technique is something of a kludge but it does work. Do your layout with crop marks etc. inside the minimal margins. Two things are important. First you must maintain the approriate page aspect ratio (the ratio of length to width), and secondly, you must determine the a reduction factor for down-scaling and later enlargement. A proporational scaling wheel helps for these calculations. Basically you layout your work in correctly proportioned reduced size and then take it to your printer and tell them to "Shoot it at X% enlargement." There is some lost of quality but it can be controlled. The secret is to work as large as possible in your layout. When going to the lengths described above, the cost Linotronic PMG's becomes very appealing and you may want to consider using Lino (or similar high rez) output. This is particularly true if what you're doing is creating a "master" boilerplate overlay for newsletters. The cost of the lino work can usually be offset by the reduced printing costs of a longer print run. Some options anyway. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 169 Wed Jul 21, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 10:53 EDT Dave, your 'kludge' sounds quite workable. So a person with a LETTER size printer could create a work page of 7.727 x 10 with .500 crop marks all around, output the page and ask the printer to shoot at 110% for full letter size, right? Of course, this would mean using all font sizes and graphics at 10 % smaller than the final size. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 170 Wed Jul 21, 1993 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 18:20 EDT Steve: With the document we worked with, the registration was fairly obvious and allowed error (even though there wasn't any). Basically, we just handed the printer the two sheets and they handled the rest. The "kludge" works. One thing to keep in mind is that you should work as large as possible. IOW don't try to simply halve all the dimensions. The quality of the type will suffer. Yes, you need to scale EVERYTHING down including type. One possibility that I've not investigated as yet is the potential of using the scaling function in the printer dialog to do all the scaling. Think about it. You do do a standard layout usig the _full_ page dimensions and then simply down-scale for printing and tell your printer to "enlarge by X%." Clean, huh?!? If the scaling function would automatically center everthing on the page it would be a _slick_ feature. It certainly should be considered as an addition to future updates. It shouldn't be too hard to implement. What I'd really like to see is the ability to either "auto center on the page" or set an offset parameter for printing. Certainly a viable workaround would be as modified printer driver that sets things to a "standard" offset for a "standard" scaling percentage. Not _too_ difficult to manage, eh? I'm new to Genie, so please bear with me. I'm using SL on a Mega 2 running TOS 1.02. When using PKS Write, I find that each time I strike the quotes or apostrophe keys nothing shows on the screen until I type another/different key. This never happens when I use other software, e.g., WordWriter ST. Is this a bug in SL or what? Thanks for any help, Don. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 182 Fri Jul 23, 1993 D.SWARTLEY at 21:24 EDT Does SL work with Branch Always' Gemulator for IBM compatibles? Is there a color version (display) of SL? Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 183 Fri Jul 23, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 21:48 EDT Hi Don and welcome to GEnie and the ST RoundTable. I am sure you will find this a very informative area. You mentioned PKS Write.... there is a new version coming with the just-announced SL upgrade package. Many of the previous bugs have been worked out :-) With regard to your specific question.... it sounds like you have the 'deadkeys' activated. These are explained on page 4 of Chapter 5.11 (System Parameters module). It is also mentioned in Key Bindings Editor [5.6.1.15] page 17. A 'deadkey' is used in combination with another letter, usually a vowel, to produce an accented foreign character. In effect, it is a keyboard macro. There are two ways to deactivate this function. You can turn them all off by clicking OFF the check mark in the Key Bindings Editor (the dialog box says Built-In Macro Keys). When you try to use a quotation mark or apostrophe, Calamus 'waits' for the second character to make a foreign letter. If you hit SPACE or a CURSOR key, the punctuation prints. That is what is happening. No bug :-) You can turn individual deadkeys off in the System Parameters module. Click External Modules in the File menu and the 'Execute' with the SP module selected. You also asked about GEMulator and SL.... I recall seeing it advertised as Calamus compatible but that might have been 1.09N. I suggest you send email to Darek Mihocka, the developer of GEMulator. Darek has a GEnie account at BRASOFT. Do you know how to use email yet? Don, your name looks very familiar. Are you famous? :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 184 Fri Jul 23, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 23:05 EDT Last time I tested it, Calamus Sl also works with GEMulator. Welcome to GEnie, Don. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 185 Sat Jul 24, 1993 S.BLACKBURN [STEVE] at 10:55 EDT Lou, In 1.09 there is a function that lets you set the mimimum margins, which lets you know how far you can go on your document so that everything you create prints (and doesn't get cut off). Is that function somewhere in SL? I can't seem to find it. Steve ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 186 Sat Jul 24, 1993 G.WOOD14 [Garth Wood] at 11:23 EDT Steve Blackburn: It's not "obvious", but the feature you seek does exist. Go to "Frame Module" [5.5] on your icon selection set, click on it, then click on the "Frame Display Command Group" [5.5.5] icon, and then click on the "Guidelines Visible/Invisible" [5.5.5.6] icon. Your document should immediately acquire a set of two vertical and two horizontal dotted lines at its outermost edges, telling you the limits of printing. (You've probably noticed when you first load SL that the SLM804 module [assuming that's the one you're using] takes an unusually long time to load, and that the "Busy" light on the SLMC804 controller lights up while loading is in progress; that's the printer talking to the program -- I've always assumed that it was telling the program what it could and could not print, though I'm probably wrong and the limits are just coded into the printer driver. 8^> ). Anyways, to save this setup, just go to "Save System Setup" in your menubar and invoke it. Hope this helps. Garth Wood ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 187 Sat Jul 24, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 11:33 EDT Steve, the command you are looking for is Guidelines Visible/Invisible in Chapter 5.5.5.6 of the Frame Display Command Group. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 188 Sat Jul 24, 1993 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 12:45 EDT What if the guidelines are wrong, as mine seem to be for my DJ500? Also the guidelines seem to be wrong at the computer store where I do my laser printouts. The left margin seems to be .5 inches. I thought most were just .25 inches. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 189 Sat Jul 24, 1993 M.SHANNON [Morgan] at 20:16 EDT Lou, ANOTHER ONE! When in PKS (not upgraded yet!) I have a lowercase "u" with a carat "^" over it (deadkey-style) folloed bu the FILENAME.CDK and some other characters all greyed-out typeface. Got any Ideas? Where did the [R][S] in greyed-out go? WHAT HAVE I DONE NOW?! Morgan :^) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 190 Sat Jul 24, 1993 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 20:41 EDT Ran into an interesting "problem" today - I was working on a business card design so I created a 3.5" by 2" raster frame in the middle of the page, with a transparent fill. I then placed guidelines on the edges, and in the process zoomed to 1000% on the corners. Well, zooming took years. It sat reading/writing virtual memory constant for a few minutes, then thinking for another minute or so, and then going into the virtual memory fit again for another minute. After this venture, the corner of the raster appears. I realize that 1000% is quite a large factor, but 3 minutes seems a bit odd to calculate a corner of a raster... On another note - Calamus is certainly the program of large capabilities. After reading a section in a Design/DTP book on aligning objects by setting your software to maximum zoom, I decided to try. I was able to zoom upto about 200000% (maybe 2000000%, I forget how many zeros) before SL would give up. And then I attempted maximum font size, which ran out to around 1,150,000 points - or 1331 feet. I can't think of a use for text for this size (a frame 8.5"x11" ends up the size of a point on the page large enough to contain the letter "S" in full page mode), but I suppose someone will eventually find a use for it...maybe. Sean Dougherty Two Worlds Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 191 Sat Jul 24, 1993 M.SHANNON [Morgan] at 20:46 EDT Lou, It's either magnetic frames (activated) or memory deficiency (I have only 4mb) I'm still working on it... worked OK after a reboot tho'. Morgan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 192 Sat Jul 24, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 23:51 EDT Morgan, you should have your ST System Memory set to 128000 byte in the System Parameters module. This often takes care of a number of problems... including PKS Write. The fact that a reboot fixed your problem tells me it was RAM related. BTW, 4 megs is what I used for over a year... 98% black and white work. Now that I have moved to color, the 10 megs of ST RAM in my TT come in very handy :-) Sean, there are two reasons why your redraw took so long. The first is that you must have had Screen Rasterization ON in the Miscellaneous Settings. Turn it off unless you really like seeing the rosetta patterns . The other possibility is that your System Memory is too low or you have a ton of fonts loaded and have minimized the available RAM in your computer. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 193 Sun Jul 25, 1993 S.BLACKBURN [STEVE] at 01:57 EDT Morgan, You mentioned that you couldn't resize a text frame. I've had something like that happen to me and the reason for it was that it was part of a grouped frame. You might take a look at that. Steve ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 194 Sun Jul 25, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 10:27 EDT Sean: For what it's worth -- My experience hasd been that RASTER generation is somewhat slow at large sizes and when printing in Calamus SL. Perhaps some optimization of the raster generation routines might help matters..... Comments anyone? -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 195 Sun Jul 25, 1993 P-DIRECT [Sean@TWP] at 10:50 EDT Well, turned of rasterization, and now things fly. A fast program becomes faster... Another note - after exiting the vector editor module in the actual object editor, sometimes everything will rubberband box to an odd location on the screen (functions like the magnifing glass). The only way I've found out of this is to reset the screen size. Sean Dougherty Two Worlds Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 196 Sun Jul 25, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 11:27 EDT Dave, Calamus IS slow to redraw extreme magnifications. But remember that it's not only calculating all color planes for the screen image, but also changing and recalculating the entire raster pastern itself at any magnification other than VIEW PRINTER 1:1. All other magnifications actually _change_ the raster pattern, in effect, changing the printer resolutions chosen in RasGen's dialog box. This isn't specific to Atari, BTW. Magnification requires moving a tremendous amount of data around. You ought to see how long Pagemaker 4.2 takes to redraw on a Mac LCII :-) A trick I use is to turn screen rasterization off temporarily when viewing at high mags to line objects up. The rest of the time, I leave it on. I generally use magnetic frames or guidelines to align objects until the very end, where I wander around at high zooms checking and "micro aligning" objects. That way I don't spend as much time putzing around during the production phase. Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 197 Sun Jul 25, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 22:09 EDT Lou, Does this also apply to an imported .CVG with graduated fills? I've mentioned this before, but the new company logo I'm working on has a globe with a fill going from the outside to the center blue to white. Even on my 50 mhz 4+4 meg Mega it takes a good 1-2 minutes to update the screen when going to another display/user size. Also, if I remember correctly, my settings are even higher than the 128000 suggested. Tom [Tom Jr.] ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 198 Sun Jul 25, 1993 D.SWARTLEY at 22:34 EDT Lou, Thanks for the help with my dead keys problem. I turned them off and everythings okay now. You mentioned a new version of PKS Write coming with the just-announced SL upgrade package. I just recently sent for my upgrade package (version 8/28/92 was shipped). Isn't this the lastest? You said my name looks familiar. No I'm not famous. You may have seen my name as the originator of a Topic on printer drivers in this CAT. I once tried to reply or send a message and accidently started a new topic. I see it took off during my lengthy absence. What did you test it on? What CPU, running at what speed? Do you remember what version of Gemulator you were running? Was the speed fast enough to make it worth the investment? Thanks, Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 200 Sun Jul 25, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 22:50 EDT Tom, the CVG graduated fills are tied to the VectorOutput Buffer and yes, they will take some time as there is a lot of calculation in those fills. 1-2 minutes seems average for a large graphic. It is best to turn on the cache for Vector Graphics in the SYS PARAM module so that you only have to wait once per display mode. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 201 Sun Jul 25, 1993 BRIAN.H [ST~SysOp] at 22:55 EDT Don, arrow keys are a no no for deletion online. Different ink, paper, and every setting made a difference. Joe also now has a HP IIIp so I am not using my DeskJet as much any more. I am using it for a little spot color and for my primary work using a DOS machine, so I have little use for raster setting other than color and that is a whole new problem. In short I can not offer you much direct advice other than to do a little trial and error. Where in the PKS display does this appear? In the text? Let's see... lowercase 'u' mit '^' over it. Is the 'FILENAME.CDK' the file you're working on? How many control characters and what do they look like? What's the German translation for 'Sherlock Holmes'? I thought we'd discovered all of the undocumented PKS features, but maybe not - this one's new to me. Yeah, I've had the cache turned on already, but as you said, it does help. I guess I can't understand how even CVG updates are quick in Outline Art compared to SL. Not to digress from the topic, maybe it's just something I don't get, or maybe some debugging routines in SL that slow it down. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 210 Mon Jul 26, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 21:16 EDT Hi Tom. One of the things that I have noted with any problem CVG files is that the number of grouped frames can seriously slow down SL's calculations. I have a feeling that the calculator function's in OL generate a large number of elements which OL saves as a group when you export to CVG. When it draws in SL, you see each element appear on screen but when you use the vector editor you tend to see one group. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 211 Mon Jul 26, 1993 D.SWARTLEY at 21:56 EDT Lou, You said info on the latest SL upgrade is in Library 30. Don ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 213 Mon Jul 26, 1993 M.TERRY5 [Martin] at 22:41 EDT Hi All- I have a curious little problem I was wondering if someone could verify... I recently installed DMCFIX.PRG from my Calamus S disks into my AUTO folder. It's supposed to help disk access with large files or something (Not that that fact is mentioned in the manual or anything.. I feel sorry for Calamus users who don't have a GENIE account ) Anyway, STZIP 2.2 won't work with the DMCFIX.PRG program. Always gives and extraction error. Maybe someone else could tell me their experience with these two programs? DO YOU USE THIS PROGRAM DMC? Does anyone? Also, in the Calamus Vein- I imported a GEM metafile with grey scale fills but the fills always show up as BLACK in the Calamus document. I believe the grey scale percentage fill is part of GEM/3. Will this be fixed by the new GEM metafile import module listed with the new upgrade? I for one salute DMC's support... I really am glad to see the option to turn off the Calamus file selector! I hate to lose Selectric! Martin ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 214 Mon Jul 26, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 22:44 EDT Anyone figured out a work around SL's and Outline 3's inability to deal with large line sizes in the vector frames and module? This isn't Nathan's problem, it's the programmers'. Maybe they (the programmers) should walk over to the TMS Cranach Studio's shop, it does just fine. Even the CVG created from an OL file that's messed up in OL3 and SL loads fine in Nathan's Cranach demo. Even when you make the line real thick. Shucks. Here I am trying to extol the virtues of Calamus and Atari to the people I work with (and take grief from for owning ) and this line problem has been an insurmountable problem for me. Since this graphic needs to be a vector graphic, I'm dead in the water without a workaround. I simply can't draw it large enough in OL3 since the workspace's dimensions (millimeters) is not large enough to draw it in the size I need, i.e. eventual printout on legal sized paper. If anyone has any recommendations for another graphic program that will let me draw it large enough for legal printout, so SL doesn't have to deal with the line size too much, I would consider it as an alternative. It would need to import an IMG like OL3. (Or deal with a .WPG graphic file from DrawPerfect from yucchy DOS. Not likely here, since the only program I can find other that DP is HiJaak in the DOS world that would deal with the file. Not cheap.) BIG SIGH! Nathan, does the new update that I can't wait to get have any changes to the vector stuff? Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 215 Tue Jul 27, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 00:24 EDT Ken, calculate what the finished size needs to be, then figure the enlargement percentage needed based on your workscreen size. Set your line thicknesses with that enlargement factor in mind. When you're done, import and enlarge. The ONLY program I have seen that makes ragged "fatline" vectors is OL3. That's _not_ a typical vector characteristic. :-) Here's a thought for ya. OL3 must use LOTS of calculations to make those ragged edges on the lines. They are saved as part of the drawing, and importing to SL brings the same ragged patterns with. Looks more like a fractal than bricks. ;-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 216 Tue Jul 27, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 05:45 EST > Nathan, What is Windows NT?
