I need help!! I need to creat an index for a songbook. I would like to have each index entry to also have a reference to the page in which it is found. Also, I need to list the index entries in alphabetical order. I thought that the index entry feature in SL would prevent me from manually having to enter the song titles in the index frame but after trying what the manual said I got a bunch of unformatted text in the frame one one occassion and nothing on the other attempts. I created a piping chain between the regular text frames and a piping chain between the index frames and the first frame in the text piping chain but like I said before, No Go! Since I have a deadline of April 29 (that's this thursday!) I really would appreciate some help. I would hate to have to do it all manually. Thanks in advance, Sam Ramirez ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 3 Thu Apr 22, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:12 EDT Say, am I just ignorant or is there no way to export a CVG from within SL? I was trying to work on a CVG in OLA, but the file is damaged, so I tried to export it from within an existing CDK. The CVG driver is import only and an exported CVD won't load into OLA. I couldn't find any specific help in the manual. Am I missing something obvious? That will be the third (3rd) time I post this message with no answer from anybody. Here it is again: I tried to generate a EPS file with Dataformer and handed it to a print shop. I was told that it only outputted a gray box. Is there anything with EPS generation? Anybody can help? Paul @ Elan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 6 Thu Apr 22, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:37 EDT Paul, sorry if I missed your earlier posts. The original release version of Dataformer was not 100% with EPS and PS output although all other formats were perfect. The problem with EPS files was generally untraceable in terms of a specific pattern. I do have a new beta version and would be most happy to try to EPS your file. Would you consider uploading it to Library 43? I will give you access. Please describe the file as TEST-DMC. Sorry for the delay. I also see that someone was asking about the Index Entry function. From my recollection of some testing a couple of months ago, it was not working properly. However, I will check this out with Mario when next I see him. My apologies for delaying in this response too. Were there any other problems or questions that have not been answered yet? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 7 Fri Apr 23, 1993 S.RAMIREZ [Sam] at 02:14 EDT Lou...Thanks for the reply, I am the one who asked about index entries. Why is it that the one feature I really need right now is one of the ones that dosen't work like it should? Preparing an Index manually is a real pain! Hopefully you will have some good news for me! Also, keep the heat on those guys over in Achtung land to get all the features to work. To be honest I am spoiled by using Pagemaker 4.0 (windows) at work. How long has it been now that we have not had the 'advertised' features of SL 'not yet working' and/or not yet working properly? Like the Index that you need, the Footnotes, the Anchor Frames, the Leader Tabs, etc? For me, it's been over a year, that is to say it has been for as long as I've had SL! Modules galore seem to appear, but how about getting the basic Modular Shell, i.e., Calamus SL completely working???????????? PageMaker, Quark, FrameMaker all do what you need, as advertised and as you have mentioned. I guess that is because they are 'World Class' DTP programs, eh? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 11 Sat Apr 24, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 16:09 EDT Stephen ... There are a great many variables involved in the release of any new version of the program or module. I am hoping that in the not to distant future we will have an update for Calamus SL that will resolve many of the still not active features that many of us await. I'd ignore the second half of your post but that might encourage you or something. ;-) How much would you care to wager that hundreds of thousands more people screamed about the products you mentioned NOT working as they might have wished them to work for years. They did and they did. Meanwhile, development continues on Calamus SL and I hope we can one day make you proud of us. Actually, I think you're proud of us now but do want us to be the very best, yesterday. We're trying Stephen. Have you been following the new topic on marketing DTP? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 13 Sat Apr 24, 1993 C.ALLEN17 [Cliff] at 21:46 EDT Nathan, Thanks for the info. Nathan, Lou, A follow up question: In trying to import an IMG file, touch it up in Brush, and run it through Speedline, for some reason I can't get it to save as a VECTOR graphic. I can get it to save as a Calamus Vector Document. I looked for a U2U tip sheet but couldn't find one. I even read the manual (sections 5.2.2.11, 7.0, & 10.0). It will be my luck that it under my nose. Pros to the rescue. Cliff (Ashevillite) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 14 Sat Apr 24, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:01 EDT Cliff, you did everything right :-) If you want to save that graphic as a CVG you would need to use Dataformer Vector. Speed Line creates a proprietary vector graphic format that can be edited within SL using the VECTOR GRAPHIC module. If you wanted to use the same graphic in another document, you could merge documents and transfer via the clipboard or, as you found out, export it as a CVD and import into another document. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 15 Sat Apr 24, 1993 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 22:01 EDT Cliff, In order for you to save a Vector graphic, you need the data former module. SL presently only exports CVD's. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 16 Sat Apr 24, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 23:29 EDT Orca surfaces.... Well, hi there ya'all! I've got some obsevations about Outline Art 3.0 that I'm gonna post here rather than in the Outline Art topic since they involve its relationship with Calamus SL, Dataformer and such. If somebody just 'has' to move this post, then so be it. I made a CVG with Dataformer. It contains two items. One is a CVG itself, and over it is a Text Frame. I grouped these two frames and Dataformed them out of SL to a CVG file. It worked fine when using the frame function in Dataformer. It worked very badly when using the 'whole page function' in Dataformer. The later resulted in many parts of the page missing. The page is an 8.5 by 11 inch, standard page. Next, I loaded this CVG into the new Outline Art 3.0. The result was that many parts of the CVG were left out. That is to say that, though they are part of the CVG and -do- load into SL, they do not show up in OA 3.0. I can tell that once again, the OA creators have given us some limits. Admittedly, it doesn't crash when hitting this limit like the orignal version did... that is better. BUT, why does this limit on the number of objects (paths) exist in OA 3.0 and does not exist in SL? Curious, eh? EH?? I've checked out the CVG in question in some 'other' vector art programs and it loads completely with no limits. In other words, it -is- an acceptable CVG, both to these 'other' programs and to SL. If Outline Art had been made and marketed by some folks other than DMC I could complain about this. However since it is so closely related to SL and the family of prgs. and modules now appearing, I must again question the so-called 'logic' of it's methods. Some of you may recall that I've already questioned the same 'non-logic' of how OA 3.0 deals with colors and CFT files in relationship with SL. Are these 'intended' to be 'related' programs???? Let's look at two more IMHO real short-comings of OA 3.0. You cannot select more than one object and alter the outline and fill definitions. You -have- to do each and every object, one at a time! SL lets you do many at once! (as do some other programs) This, again, seems to defy what I see as logical. If the Vector Module in SL can do something, I would expect OA 3.0 to do it also, and at -least- as well! Woodent Ewe? Lastly (for now) is the lack of a 'rubber-band' method of selecting paths in OA 3.0. Shift clicking forever is not my idea of a good time! BTW, none of the above complaints can be considered as 'asking for too much' since there exist other programs that use these methods. SL itself, being one of these other! It all makes me wonder if the German DMC company that sends this stuff to Nathan (and us) cares about creating a real working family of programs in the DTP arena. Or is it gonna 'patches' for eternity? .................................Orca dives.......... ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 17 Sun Apr 25, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 00:03 EDT Hi Lou, ...yes, I've followed it but only a little. Actually, I've been busy with other things, not the least of which has actually been the marketing of DTP! Keeping my fingers and all else crossed at the moment. %^) Nathan, hmmm? "Hundreds of thousands" of people screaming, eh? Don't you just wish you had them screaming at you? %^) Maybe even Millions, eh???? I just want the stuff to work as it should and as it says it does today, though yesterday would have been nice! Yes, I want you to be the 'very best'.... during my lifetime, that is! The problem as I see it is that 'development continues' on all fronts, not just on DMC products. As you can read from my last post about OA 3.0, I see reason to be concerned about the quality of said development as well as the speed of it! I too wish we had "Hundreds of thousands" of people screamings... it would be easier to be heard, ..or is that herd? It's not a question of me being 'proud' of 'us', Nathan. I do believe that your 'real' feelings about development speed and quality are a whole lot closer to mine than you will ever admit on this RT. %^) ......It's a thankless job, but someone has to do it! %^))))))) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 18 Sun Apr 25, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:56 EDT True enough Stephen. Bill ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 21 Sun Apr 25, 1993 D.HOHENSTEIN [PRIMETIME] at 13:07 EDT Isn't it a bit silly to need the dataformer module to export a CVG from SL when you could do it with 1.09N without external help? Just an observation. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 22 Sun Apr 25, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 16:36 EDT Doug, before Dataformer was available, many folks wanted CVG export from SL as they had it from 1.09N. However, CVG's are now able to hold color information so that a simple export driver would no longer do the trick. Dataformer gives you the choice of exporting a vector graphic frame or page as CVG 1.0 or 1.1 (color). This situation is much like the difference between the text export functions for 1.09N and SL. In 1.09N you could export a CTX file. This CTX file will load into SL. The converse is not true. Because of the multitude of text style attributes, an exported SL text file cannot load back into 1.09N. Therefore SL has an upgraded text export driver that creates a CTD (Calamus Text Document) file. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 23 Mon Apr 26, 1993 JIM.K [Jim~ST Sysop] at 11:37 EDT Messages #2-185 have been archived and are in the library-File #28554. I have a text problem that perhaps one of you has run across and solved before. Out of an 18 page document, I have 2 lines of text that keep scrambling. The letters are interchanged and a few are laying on top of each other. This is usually just a part of the line. The text is CG Times, 12 point, no other attributes. No text ruler within a few lines either way. In both cases, there are however, IMGs on the page and the text is assigned to flow to the left of them. BTW, most other pages in the doc have IMGs also. I can reformat or reassign the same text style and it goes away. I save it "fixed". But, the next time I load the doc, or after printing - presto, it's back - and not always in the same place on the line. Kind of like a bubble under plastic. :-) Any ideas? Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 25 Mon Apr 26, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:45 EDT Doug, I have had that happen once or twice, but not in a repeatable way. Text flow around was the trigger. Jack ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 29 Tue Apr 27, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:16 EDT Lou, Got any large IMG's laying around your HD? Say around 200,677 bytes?:-) Hate to bring up an old subject, but it imports into SL incorrectly. Nowhere near as bad as the messed up imports of the screwed up driver. Dataforming the frame as an IMG and loading the DF'd file into Touch Up or MVG or Invision Elite and the garbage that is in the SL frame is in the DF'd file. So, it is not a screen display problem, I don't think. Fortunately I don't need it at true size, so I shrunk it via MVG down to the size I needed and this file imports okay. If you want the file to try out, I'll send it via Snail Mail. Just say the word. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 30 Tue Apr 27, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:58 EDT Lou, Regarding my last message, I just got email from DOUG7 about IMG's, since I wanted to know if he was having any trouble. Kind of a technical question about the innards of SL. How does SL react when importing a graphic, if there is not enough memory to handle the extra size of the graphic? Does it automatically write the excess to the HD, assuming virtual memory is on, or does/will it scramble something? My TT ram has gone bye-bye :-( for some unknown reason, and am back to working with just 4 megs ST ram. Working on TT ram problem as we speak. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 31 Tue Apr 27, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:18 EDT Hmmm, that's a pretty big IMG file but Mario routinely loads MUCH bigger color ESM and GIF files. So I don't think it is system memory. Have you tried loading this file right into a new document? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 32 Wed Apr 28, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 00:04 EDT Well, I think I have the "scrambled text" problem licked. Trouble is I don't know exactly what solved it. Spent most of the day on it. Jack - one of the lines was on a page without an IMG. But there _was_ one there at one time. Before I noticed the the text problem, I moved it to another page where it now resides peacefully:-) On the trouble page, I found a series of text rulers with a tabs hidden behind the margin flags at the extreme left. Deleted the tab, re-styled the text, and the problem went away - for that page. The more stubborn one is immediately to the left of an IMG. The offending text reads, "absolute or whole number increments." The strange thing is that the scramble has generally stayed with those words, even as they have moved up and down the page, (depending on what editing I have done elsewhere). I tried deleting the text and then re-entering it. I even tried rewording it. Different text styles. Different rulers. What seems to have made it stop was something I must have done in PKS while editing the previous page. All of a sudden it quit scrambling! Lou has the doc now for testing (its a U2U), so, I guess it's his headache now, heh, heh :-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 33 Wed Apr 28, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 00:43 EDT Ken, let's take part of this to the boards. My IMG problems were three-fold if my memory serves me (which it does less and less lately). The first was in exporting full page IMGs with the August '92 export driver. That was solved (I know you remember THAT one) and a new driver was sent out to those who had the problem. The second was with Dataformer's IMG output. What I found was a problem with the DF>IMG handling of outlined fonts. I put a doc together and sent it to DMC about 4 months ago. (Nathan?) But that was the only problem that I could find with DF. The rest of the IMG was perfect - mirror image. Some people have had problems with the IMG import driver. I occasionally have trouble importing an IMG, but usually they have been created or run through Invision. No pattern to the size though - even some small IMGs have scrambled in SL. I always use Gemview to test. If they load in Gemview, they will load in SL. I hav.nt found an exception yet. I hate to say this, but most of my IMG file problems (and PKS crashes) were on an overloaded MST4. When I switched to the 20 meg TT, EVERYTHING in SL started working better :-) I have been working with some 1-2 meg color IMG and TIFF files and they import just fine. You mentioned (in Email) that you wanted to include a copy of a page in another page (reduced in size, I presume). Try exporting as a TIFF. Larger file size, but generally has much better resizing abilities. Rock solid drivers too. Which leads me to my own question. What's available to edit color TIFFs and GIFs? Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 34 Wed Apr 28, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:09 EDT Nathan: I just finsihed reading your MAILAPR.TXT file and have some questions based on what I read: You mention that MT Scan is for the TT SCSI _ONLY_. A while back, you were questioned here in the RT as to whether or not ICD's AdSCSI (SCSI 2) would adequately support the MicroTek scanner/MT Scan combination. Your reply was, "I'll get the programmer and get back to you." I don't recall seeing a reply. Personally, I see no reason why it shouldn't be compatible and further, ICD claims the AdSCSI is compatible with _ANY_ SCSI 2 device. What's the deal? Has the "problem" wih EPS output been corrected in the DataFormer module? The text of the April mailout leads one to believe all is well. If so, shouldn't those of us that stuck our necks out and purchased the DataFormer module be getting an fully functional Dataformer module? I, for one, do not care to be sending EPS files for output only to find there's a "problem" in the conversion (i.e.: _MY_ problem...). What's the status? Is there a "new" Color Sep module? Additionally, the file indicated _DMC_ has developed a HP LaserJet IV printer driver. I'm aware of the "beta" driver. It has gotten a work-out around here, but a full fledged HP LJ IV driver is news to me. As you're aware I'm anxiously awaiting the "real" driver just to see if Mount will work "as advertized" with the LJIV. The way I have it figured, if the Calamus SL will print a page in landscape 600 dpi then it ought to do the same with Mount active. One thing is clear, either the driver, Mount, or use of virtual memory is broken. In summary, my gut feel is there is a degree of uncharacteristic "hype" and half-truths in the April mail out. This is atypical of what I've come to expect from ISD. If I'm wrong _PLEASE_ set me straight, but right now I feel like the kid that said, "Say it ain't true Joe!" -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 35 Wed Apr 28, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:55 EDT Dave: 1. Michael Bernards wrote MT-Scan. Best as I can determine or understand, Michael says there are a rgeat many variations or considerations when dealing with SCSI. For whatever reason, in response to a direct request for compatibility to The LINK type connections, Michael said "not at this time". So, when I did the mailout, I clearly indicated TT only as I know for certain that MT-Scan works perfectly with the TT. 2. I got caught between a rock and a hard place. There IS a new version of the Dataformer module that does work better than the original BUT I do not yet have the master in my hand. I should have had it. I expected to have it. It hasn't yet materialized. When it does, all those that had previously purchased Dataformer will be notified immediately. I have the beta and it is great. I will call Germany in a few minutes and get brought up to date. 3. No, there is not a new Color Separation module. I don't recall indicating that there was. Did I miss something here? 4. Again, I am waiting for the finished HP IV driver. You have the beta version. As soon as I have the final version I will say so here and upload it to those that require it. Dave ... You are making a mistake. You are assuming that everyone is as knowledgeable as you or, more apt, that every one of our thousands of registered customers are on GEnie. In fact, although I promote GEnie every chance I get ;-), the majority of registered owners, do not own a modem! This means that they have not heard from us since the last customer mailout quite some time ago, especially our customers in Australia and New Zealand. If you now re-read the mailout with that concept in mind, you will most likely arrive at a different conclusion. I have always left out the hype, preferring to stick to facts and let facts speak for themselves. I may get caught in a timing thing over the new Dataformer stuff but NOT intentionally I can assure you. Sigh. We are all frustrated, I more so than any of you. I will continue to do whatever I can to make it better for us all. Without your support, I can do nothing. In fact, without all of your support, I'm history. I appreciate it and I thank you. The view in PKS write reminds me of WordPerfect. I invariably wind up with LOTS of formatting entries negating those which follow. I shall clean them up before I try a full page GEMIMG print at 600DPI. I have also had problems when massaging IMG's in Invision, saving, and importing into SL.(or anywhere,it seems) Looks like an Invision problem. I must admit, there are two things that I have never mastered: how to make the hyphenation work the way I want, and how to build useable rulers/tabs in PKS. I understand the basics, but being as I'm not much of a 'text' guy, I place those sorta things _last_ on the curve. Yeah, I always ate my vegetables last, too :-) Lou, Thanks for the update. Hmmm, I thought it was the import driver that was given out. I know Lou sent me a new import driver and that cured my import problems until now. I thought the export driver with the last SL update would not work period. Lou, could you review the export driver status, so we clear our heads (or whats left of them ) about what's what with the IMG export driver? >The second was with Dataformer's IMG output. What I found was a problem with >the DF>IMG handling of outlined fonts. I put a doc together and sent it to >DMC about 4 months ago. (Nathan?) But that was the only problem that I could >find with DF. The rest of the IMG was perfect - mirror image. Hey! That's right! It does screw up the fonts. I noticed that too, when I tried it with the July(?) SL release and DF. But the IMG export driver worked just fine on the fonts, and, not being as active on GEnie then, I'm sure I didn't post anything about it. Fact is, I may not have been a GEnie member at the time. :-) (GEnie has not been kind to my financial stability ) >Some people have had problems with the IMG import driver. I occasionally have >trouble importing an IMG, but usually they have been created or run through >Invision. No pattern to the size though - even some small IMGs have scrambled >in SL. I always use Gemview to test. If they load in Gemview, they will load >in SL. I hav.nt found an exception yet. I'll try my problem IMG later tonight with GEMview and let everyone know tomorrow. The problem IMG was created with TU, and loads fine into Invision and MVG. As for the problem being somewhat related to memory, I'm sorry to say my TT RAM has died for unknown reasons at this moment. Am emailing back and forth with K.BROOK1 trying to figure it out. No doubt some $ will be built into the solution. >You mentioned (in Email) that you wanted to include a copy of a page in >another page (reduced in size, I presume). Try exporting as a TIFF. Larger >file size, but generally has much better resizing abilities. Rock solid >drivers too. To be a little more specific, I took my Bettles flyer, which you have a copy of and I sent Nathan a couple copies, and exported some frames as IMG files. I imported them into TU and fiddled until I could put them together so the resembled a partially open 3 panel flyer when viewed from the front and slightly above. (No, I'm not going to try and ASCII representation ) The resulting IMG was/is basically "lifesize". Taking the easy way out, I was just going to import it into SL, optimize size for printer, set to proportional sizing, and shrink the sucker to around 1- 1 1/2" in size. Could have done a TIFF, but there didn't seem much reason to do this for this exercise. If you educate me as to a real good reason to do so in this case, I'll do it. I'm not under any gun, as it is a personal project. Stuck with the IMG out of familiarity, I guess, and was surprised when it was screwed up with the new import driver. Which brings me back to my question of what does SL do when it finds it is importing a graphic and finds out that available ram is too small for graphic? And yes, I did try the graphic in a new document, no other frames in the document, and no other documents open. I did not check available RAM before loading, didn't think about it. Nathan & Dave, I think Nathan is right about the modem use among Atari owners. Fact is, if you removed full time businesses leaving the part time home business, I'll bet you fine very few modems, regardless of platform. I know personally that were it not for Nathan's mailouts, I would not have upgraded many times before going slowly broke using GEnie. I have often wondered how many Atari developers have missed out on $ for upgrades simply because the announcements were only online and in magazines. There are those who use computers (any platform), yet refuse to read a single magazine, and do not own a modem. Nathan & Lou Invision Elite Color (Colour?) Is this available in the mailout? Only reason I have not ordered OLA 3 via email was to wait and see what else was available, notably the additions U2U disks. Think you'll ever do Cranach? After reading an article on Retouche, would sure have fun playing with something like this, even though I have no real use for it. I'm just a software junkie!! Ken S. PS. I knew I would be buying something, would rather give DMC money instead of GEnie and phone company.:-) GEMIMG.CER being bum is what I remembered. As for the scaling function- a misunderstanding here. I was using portions of the City of Bettles flyer exported as graphic files for "tweaking and twisting" for incorporation as a grahpic into a different CDK. Only the resulting flyer graphic needed to be reduced, not the entire new CDK. In other words, a small graphic that shows a flyer I made. Anyway, back to the graphic. I tried Doug's method of checking the graphic in GEMview. I have ver. 2.2 from the library. Loaded in just fine, so tried SL again. Didn't work, checked standard free memory in statistices before loading, had 958 k. Removed a bunch of modules, checked and found 1438k, tried again, same result. Heaven forbid that the entire TT should be dying. :- ) Anymore thoughts? Jack(still hanging in there) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 49 Fri Apr 30, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:29 EDT Nathan: Thanks for the reply regarding my recent post. With regard to the MT-Scan/SCSI compatibility issue. Okay, I can accept what the programmer has to say. However, I'm surprised from a software developer standpoint you can accept that explanation. There _is_, in fact, a SCSI 2 standard which should be adhered to. Your post leads me to believe that good 'ol Atari deviated from the established standard once again in developing the TT. This is _not_ the fault of the programmer, but from a marketing perspective, I think I would push hard to support the protocols used in the most popular host adapter card for the rest of the market. In the COLOR SEP description the mention of undercolor removal is what threw me. That was the first time I've noticed that particular feature. Please note that the business of the COLOR SEP modules was posed as a question. >2. I got caught between a rock and a hard place. There IS a new > version of the Dataformer module that does work better than > the original BUT I do not yet have the master in my hand. I > should have had it. I expected to have it. I will call Germany in a few minutes > and get brought up to date. > Cynacism and sarcasism aside, nice defination of "Vaporware". I empathize with you. The position the Germans have placed you in seems to be central to many problems; Dataformer development, HP LJIV printer driver, and many of the unavailable functions (leader tabs, etc.). IMHO we _have_ been patient in waiting for something as simple as a full- featured LJIV driver. In most circles this would not be considered an major undertaking. Reality is that the LJIV has established itself as the new standard. I think you need to ask yourself whether or not Calamus adquately supports "the new standard? Does the competition? I agree that I try to keep myself informed and, by virtue of the fact I use GEnie and work daily with Calamus SL, may be better informed than the average user. The fact that there's an "information gap" for the average user only serves to strenghten the case for speedy development, and straightforward advertizing. No, I would not advertize a product of mine with copy that stated, "P.S.: The PostScript functions have problems and we're working on them. . .", but I think the customer deserves to be adequately aprised of the product and _not_ lead to believe that it is fully functional when it is not: > . . .For PostScript >files, the options include FILLED or EMPTY fills and you may choose to >save an image with the file. For EPS, you may choose to attach a TIFF with >the converted file. Your cost is US $100.00 or CDN $125.00. Nate, "ISD bashing" is just as counter productive as "Atari bashing". ISD has always provided exceptional support and unparalleled personal service. The bottom line is the same as I stated in the first message; _I_ detected a degree of hype and half-truths that were _uncharacteristic_ of ISD. If I, as an informed customer, feel that way, what should you expect when an uniformed customer orders a product that doesn't perform as advertized. I bought Dataformer fully knowledgable of its shortcomings. IMHO _every_ customer should have that same opportunity. If they don't they will quickly become disillusioned with the both the product and the marketer and promptly dump the product. Customer's perseptions are funny things, if inaccurrately read and they feel decieved you can kiss them good-bye. This was my concern and the purpose of my previous message. I know I'm preaching to the choir here. Your customer relations are superb. However, I thought you should be aware of _my_ reaction after reading the APRMAIL.TXT file the first time through. For advertizing purposes that's what counts. I _DO NOT_ desire for this exchange to set off a "feeding frenzy" on ISD. Nor do I think this thing should get blown out of proportion. We're all in this boat together. My sole purpose in initiating this discussion was to foster better relations between ISD and their customers. The mailing has gone out, therefore the point is moot. The root of the problem fundamentally lies in 2 areas, 1) ignorance of a number of things on my part, & 2) discovering the Fujitsu RX7100, LJ+ clone, is capable of outputting nice looking greys when the 804 can't. Compounding #1 is the fact that I owned the LJ+ before the 804, and had no idea I was already using the better printer for the conditions I was operating under. but the LJ+ clone is sssssssoooooooo sssssslllllooooowwww. A person could become a monument in the petrified forest waiting for it to print! I send each of you further details and samples via snail mail. Lou, it will be part of the readme file, and looks like Doug get real paper. Back when it was called FPRINT, I tried it and didn't have much improvement in speed with the LJ+ clone. Great idea guys, you must have felt the vibes. At least now we have the option of a high quality service to print our creations. Now we should all go over to Topic 27 and discuss how we can find customers that will pay for this service :-) A Question: What is the best way to get good results printing out raster graphics (shaded areas and such) within calamus outside of send the files to a service bureau. I use graphics created in Outline Art a lot but the dot size makes the image unattractive. I'm printing from an SLM 605. Is it a limit of the DPI that I'm printing with, or is there something that I can do to improve the appearance of the printout. I am getting fairly a fairly large dot pattern which is, I imagine due to the output method I have available. Is there something I can do to get better output. I've never really understood the raster settings in the print menu, anyone have a suggestion? Just hooked up a Moniterm to my system. BOOOOY....what a difference. Does anyone have any secrets to using a moniterm? I am having all kinds of problems booting the system even when I'm not trying to use the big screen. The system crashes (during the boot process) on a regular basis, it takes quite a few tries with different combinations to get it to finally run properly. Once I do get it to boot it seems to work fairly well. Are there some TSR's or DA's that conflict with the card that was installed in my Mega? Any help would be appreciated. Before the card was installed I had a pretty bullet proof system, now things are turned upside down and it makes me crazy after awhile. Anyone... What is the reference pin used for in SL. I had a problem with loading some ING files as well. It had nothing to with size as I have often loaded files as big as 500K or so. The tutorial and accompanying text also covers the conversion of your colors from CYMK to CYM or RGB and back, for use with Outline Art 3 and tms CRANACHE Studio (if) and any other program that allows color-value input. Included are 2 Pantone-based color CFTs (SL lists) - a 168 color list for SL and a shorter 60 color list for SL and/or OL3. The second file, CLR_TABL.LZH contains a 'reference' version of the the 168- color tables from above (larger and easier to read) along with a color conversion worksheet for creating or organizing new lists. Included is a _new_ 256 gray "K" list and .CFT that has all possible gray (or any other slider) values with labels. This list has been designed for correct K value alignment when using the Raster Generator and Color Sep modules. Please enlighten me. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 88 Sat May 08, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 17:33 EDT There is a crippled version of Calamus SL available named Calamus S. ;-) In fact, 99% of all upgrades from 1,09N went to Calamus SL. So, I stopped worrying about Calamus S and concentrated on Calamus SL. Yes, S is available as outlined in the mailout before this latest one. That is what we were trying to do, wasn't it? :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 92 Sun May 09, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:26 EDT Ken ... Optimise, then proportionally reduce it. Or, create the size that you want and then select best fit. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 93 Sun May 09, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Jim] at 12:26 EDT Lou, I am still having problems with some (many) of the GEM vector graphics that DMC sells. When imported the frame mode is set to proportional sizing and you can not get the proper proportions by clicking on the tool for vector graphic resizing (sorry i don't remember the icon name). Needless it is a problem because of the distortion. And again, i doesn't do it with any of my other .GEM vector graphics. Thanks, Jim. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 94 Sun May 09, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 13:40 EDT OK Jim. Now I recall the problem. Some GEM graphics are being imported at Optimum Size (Screen Resolution). Go to the Coordinate Display and simply change one of the dX or dY to resize the graphic. I honestly don't know why the DMC Library GEMs do this while others don't. However, I actually see it as a benefit because when I import a graphic (raster or vector) I always optimize then resize it. This 'feature' saves me a step :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 95 Sun May 09, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 14:12 EDT Nathan, Optimise is sort of what I did. :-) I was trying to hide some flaws in the IMG by reducing it, but discovered at 1:1 magnification that at certain reduced sizes the flaws were actually accentuated. Fat bit editing the original was going to take forever so was looking for quicker solution. Lucked out by using Dr. Bob's MVG and reducing the size to 75 % of original. End result was far, far better than I would have ever done manually. I was simply guessing that if one could select a geometrically smaller that original size, I could end up with essientially the same result and save some time. Ken S. As he scurries to the manual to look up "select best fit". :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 96 Mon May 10, 1993 D.HOHENSTEIN [PRIMETIME] at 00:59 EDT Bruce, I'm the only person in the free world cheap enough to have bought S instead of SL. Doug ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 97 Mon May 10, 1993 J.HICKEY6 at 10:55 EDT I have been seeking a way to output my Calamus SL documents in a compressed image format suitable for importing into "other" platforms used at printing/copying services locally here in California, for printou on high resolution devices. The Dataformer module I recently acquired was up and running, without a hitch, in less than 5 minutes. I immediately transformed a complex(50_GREYS.CDK), letter size page at 300DPI into an uncompressed TIF file. I then ST-ZIP'd it onto a 3-1/2" disk and packed it off to my local MAC dealer. He unZIP'd it using STUFFIT, imported it into a suitable APP and output it on a an APPLE laser printer. No muss, no fuss. I have not tried the compressed TIF transform built into Dataformer, but expect it will function well and be compatible. I also transformed that page to Windows Image format(*.BMP) with no problem. I plan on taking that to a copy place with a Windows platform and 600DPI printer. For anyone looking for a service bureau to output your creations, take a look at Dataformer. Your service bureau could be as near as the local CopyMat. The above transform(50_GRAYS.CDK transform page to TIF at 300DPI) was done using ST ram on my TT, and took 21 seconds(packed TIF took 45 seconds). Can anyone check how fast this is done if TT ram is used? It just might convince me to "sell the kids" to get some TT ram. Sam ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 100 Tue May 11, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Jim] at 02:15 EDT Lou, No, my problem is that the GEM vectors i import don't have the proper proportions (i.e. DX, DY are incorrect; stretched images). When i click on optimize the values don't change. I have played with several and there is no way that i know of to fix the problem. It is a real pain to manually size images to give you the proper size. Nathan, How about some CRI files for your service bureau. I Was reading the current CN and it sounded like it's ready to go, pending the release of the operating system. Will there be an upgrade path for SL users? The newspaper I freelance at puts out about 10 - 80 page tabloids a month using a 60/40 combination of Compugraphic and Archetype on a PC to Postscript laser. Of course, the stuff I do with SL and my HPIV is *much* sharper looking than the PC stuff, but I have to suffer the usual Atari ridicule from my co-workers who think it's so *cute* (grrr). So I'm all for SL being ported over to Windows (there, I said it ;-)... BTW the Cebit article in CN is a rather sobering read. So's the thought of anticipating something for a PC. So what's the buzz? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 106 Thu May 13, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 04:38 EDT I can't stand it! I can't just let this momentous event pass without comment, so here goes: Doug Walter has just finished a truly great piece of work that has resulted in the U2U tip sheets on process color conversion to and from RGB-CYMK, etc. Doug doesn't blow his own horn much, but I do happen to know that he's spent much of a year investigating this situation. (If you want all the gory details, you'll have to write to Doug yerself!) As a U2U writer myself, I have found that projects such as this one take so much time and thought and effort, that when viewed in terms of reward from U2U points, we end up working for pennies per hour. Doug knows this, Mike knows this, I know this and some others know it too. We share our efforts in a spirit of 'brother/sister-hood' with the user base and we do enjoy the warm gushy feelings of having helped others. Make no mistake, I believe all U2U authors enjoy that feeling as part of their reward. Also make no mistake, I'm not complaining about the point system nor asking for a 'raise'. I think it's ok the way it is and appreciate it for it's uniqueness in the DTP world. My hat's off to Doug and all U2U writers for their considerable efforts. I do have a complaint, however...(you knew this was coming, eh?) The basic thing is this. Though Doug did a great job, he should not have had to do most of it! DMC Germany program designers should have eliminated the problem by coordinating the Outline-Art & SL color handling. As Doug has pointed out in his tips, there are some serious deficiencies in the relationship between Calamus SL and Outline Art 3.0 as regards color handling. For examples: OA limits the items in a CFT to under 100, whereas SL allows many more. This means that you can't automatically use your large CFTs from SL in OA without modification. What is even more serious is that OA uses only RGB colors whereas SL allows for the use of RGB, CYM, CYMK, Focoltone, and maybe even HSI. So, if you have a CFT made in SL that involves the Focoltone Colors and load it into OA, those colors won't even load! To make use of these colors in OA with the intent of creating a graphic that will be imported to SL and eventually output to Linotronics and printed either via normal CYMK four-color process and/or the Focoltone matching system, requires several very time consuming steps of color conversion. How should it be? It -should- be that whatever can be done with color in SL and/or -any- of its modules (like the vector module) can be done - and- done in the same manner with Outline Art. Seems logical, don't it???? From my perspective there are other serious problems similar to the above between Outline Art and SL. Here's one that is directly related to the color issues at hand. In SL, with the Vector Module, you can select by shift-clicking many paths and then change the color parameters of them all at one time. This is good! This is how it ought to be in OA as well. But, alas, it is not. In OA you have to do each and every path one at a time. How come kids? Obviously the programming techniques already exist because we see them in SL! Why not in OA as well?! Try a work-around (God, I hate that term more and more) for the above problem. Here's the idea. Import the vector graphic from OA to SL and change the colors of the many paths there, right? It -should- be a piece of cake once inside SL because you -should- simply be able to change the color in question in the Color Table CFT list. Well, catch-22 time... because the graphic doesn't come into SL with colors in a CFT form. The colors are defined by OA as percents of RGB in a way that don't show in the CFT list. That is, you don't even get to visually see the durn colors, just the numbers up there at the top of the menu. Well, gentle reader, I think you may be starting to see my point(s). There's more, but I'll leave if for another time. Again, I point these things out about Doug's tips in the same way that I feel about my own DEADEYE.LZH registration and CYMK mark tip sheet. We both did good work that shouldn't have be needed in the first place. No slight intended to me or Doug or Nathan... only some well aimed criticism about the "state-of-the art" programming at DMC in Germany. I wish they would get their heads out of their ascii and take a look around! ....watch out! There's Orcas in the water! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 107 Thu May 13, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:00 EDT Dennis ... Calamus SL will be available for Windows NT later this year. You will be able to obtain it directly from us, at a reduced cost, as we've always done on behalf of our registered customers. Your Atari documents will be compatible. New product continues to be released for the ATARI version. And you all have to know that this only strengthens the Atari version for a wide variety of reasons. In the meantime, it doesn't exist and I'd really prefer to talk about what you have in your hands right now. Thanks for understanding. Stephen ... solid post as usual and destined for Germany once again. I agree. And by the way, if I haven't said it lately, I LOVE the User to User concept. It has been incredibly successful in terms of helping each of us to help each other. Wild applause to all those that have taken the time to participate and I only wish I could do more in return. One of these days maybe we'll publish a book and make you all world-famous. Thank you. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 108 Fri May 14, 1993 VORTEXT at 03:28 EDT I really must echo Stephens post. And let me reiterate that it is not a slam on Doug or nathan or anyone. The work that was done on the color conversion file was wonderful and very helpful. To bad it had to be done in the first place. OA is supposed to be part of a family of products that work together to accomplish a desired goal. Together means exactly that, TOGETHER. Do the Adobe products work together? You bet. I don't mean that you can simply load a file from to the other. OA should accept and produce files under the same set of conditions and circumstances as SL does, colors, limits, and all. If SL is to be the mother handler or centerpiece of a truely versatile and comprehensive publishing environment, (something I certainly hope to see) then its various support structures (and not just the dependent modules) should conform to its own standards, not some undercut version. Stephens points are well aimed and on the money. To bad he always has to be the pointing them out. It tends to give him an undeserved rep as a griper. He's not, he's just dedicated. Daniel ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 109 Sat May 15, 1993 C.ONGSTAD [CDO] at 20:36 EDT Just got an update of Calamus SL from 1.09N. Go to import command. 4. Highlite the Word Perfect conversion module. 5. Press import. 6. Item selector now is visible. Choose Word Perfect text file to import. 7. I had a dynamic greyscale behind transparent letters similar to the example on page 112 of OL's manual except that mine was dynamic left to right, not vertical like the manual. When I used the vector module to add thickness to some lines, the greyscale changed on the screen. It was now light on the left, dark on the right. I should have printed it but didn't think about it. The graphic consisted of 5 frames, and I'm not sure which frame was selected when it happened. Eventually got what I wanted, but thought you'd be interested. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 114 Sun May 16, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:28 EDT Ken, what did you do to restore the fill pattern? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 115 Sun May 16, 1993 C.ONGSTAD [CDO] at 23:39 EDT Let me explain. When I load in an Atari Word Perfect file (Ver. 4.1, April 18, 1991) that has a header or footer, the little hot cup of tea (that's what I think it is) is on for a second, disappears and the program ends up back at the dialog box that lists the Word Perfect module and has the import button. But, when I take out the header/footer control codes the Word Perfect file loads OK. Why does it load in fine in 1.09N but seems to bomb in SL. Could it be a bug??? Try it, and see if it doesn't do the same for you. One more question. Will I need more than 2.5 megs of ST ram to run the dataformer module if and when I should buy it? I want to turn CVG graphics into graphics that Word Perfect 5.1 can read. Nathan, did you ever get my CVG file I uploaded to you? Thanks to you guys for your quick response to my last question :). ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 116 Mon May 17, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 02:30 EDT This post relates to a comment Mario recently posted in reply to one of VORTEXT's questions about the Raster Generator Module. Mario suggested that the the surest way to affect the RG settings in a document was to do it frame by frame. Unfortunately he's correct! My point is that this should not be the case. It should be that you can change the settings in one fell swoop for the entire document -and- if you wish, can also change particular settings for either each page and/or each frame. That is how the RG should work and by golly -sometimes- it does. But it is not dependable that it will work that way, hence Mario's suggestion of the 'surest' or safest method. I certainly hope this problem will be addressed RSN as it has been pointed out some time ago. To me this is another instance of a faulty module that causes yet another time consuming 'work-around' or at least take more care and time than it should. .... end of sermon. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 117 Mon May 17, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 10:05 EDT CDO ... (Meaning print two pages on a single page, by using landscape & reduction. I'm not overly concerned with page order, I am just trying to conserve paper and toner for some purposes.) Thanks. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 120 Tue May 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:36 EDT Sandy, you can easily change Single to Double page formats using Set Page Format. However, the effect you want is best achieved using the Scaling feature in the print function. If you want to creat original pages in letter dimensions (8.5x11), then set your page format to 11x17. This double sized page (not a real double page with a left and right side) can contain two letter pages. When printing, simply set your scaling to 50% Landscape. Be aware that you will never be able to print your real page in full size unless you have an 11x17 printer! :-) The other thing you might consider is the Mount module but you would have to be laying out half page (5.5x8.5) to print on Letter size. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 121 Tue May 18, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 22:46 EDT Lou, Let's see if Aladdin lag can bite us! >Ken, what did you do to restore the fill pattern? It dawned on me a couple of hours after posting, you were probably referring to the raster fill printouts I sent you. I didn't restore anything, I changed printers. Just goes to show you that all lasers are not created equal. Notwithstanding Bob Brodie's post about putting the 804 and Atari computer up against any other combo, the printout simply proves that all lasers do not generate the same results. (And before we get into flaming and debating, that is how I remember his post. I apologize if I am in error.) The better looking printout is from a Fujitsu RX 7100, an old Laserjet + clone. No settings were changed before printing, just changed drivers and printers. I'm not giving up the 804, but it is obvious the Fuji can accomplish some grey shading effects that is, so far as I can tell, beyond the ability to match. I have a copy of Outburst on hold at local Atari dealer, but have a hunch it won't do much to improve speed of Fuji. I suspect that is a result more of aged laser than Outburst. Right now I'm making oodles of 50_GRYS.CDK with different raster generator settings, one from each printer. I have already discovered a couple of RasGen settings that cause the Fuji to give the same grey output as I got with 1.09n. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I stumbled on the grey output by just trying some printouts of fill patterns with Touch Up that, had I been more knowledgeable about rasters and such, I may never have tried. I was simply curious to see what the output would look like. Which brings up the interesting question, how does one shop for a laser knowing that they are not all equally capable? I doubt that the store will let you take one for a test drive. I have obviously discovered there is more to what a 300 dpi laser will do than simply looking at the resolution. Doug Walter and I have been batting this around in email for some time. Maybe he might want to jump in with some comments, the more the merrier! There's more I could post, but don't want to bore everyone here. Heh, heh. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 122 Tue May 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:54 EDT Actually Ken, I was asking how you restored the gradient fills you wer describing in your message about Outline Art and the Vector module. However since you mentioned your IMG files, did I ask you if you had selected the R button in the print dialog? That is the only reason I can guess for those streaking fills... other than an improper setting on your laser printer. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 123 Wed May 19, 1993 S.RAMIREZ [Sam] at 01:52 EDT Nathan, as far as Calamus NT, will Windows NT be an upgrade path for current Windows owners? Later, Sam ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 124 Wed May 19, 1993 SANDY.W [sysop] at 10:09 EDT Thanks, Lou, but I don't think that is quite what I want. I can easily create the double pages, but what I want to do is to take a document I have created as single pages, and change it to double pages for printing at 50% (landscape). The converting to double pages is easy, but what is the easiest way to transfer the second page contents to the second half of the first double page? I guess it will need to be done with group frames and the clip board? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 125 Wed May 19, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 10:28 EDT Sandy Exactly correct. Group the entire page, cut it to the clipboard and then paste it back onto the 11 x 17 page. Sam I have NT on a 40 MHz 386 DX and it runs ok. I am planning on removing the motherboard and replacing it with a 486. So yes, it will be enough but it will not be optimum. Greg ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 127 Thu May 20, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 02:18 EDT Lou, Ah so, the OL fills and the Vector module. To restore them, I rearranged the foreground/background order of the frames. To try and be more specific. 2 foreground frames side by side _____________ _______________ 2 middle frames sided by side _____________ _______________ 1 background frame ______________________________ (Hope it came out formatted on GEnie okay) The background frame contained the greyscale, the middle frames were text frames converted to object with a box added to each frame so the greyscale would show through. The foreground boxes copies of the original text frames with the text set to outline. I am in no way at the expert level of OL and the Vector module, but I _think_ what was happening was I had the middle frames on top when first trying for thickened outlines I wanted around the text. I believe that when I selected the frames for changing the outline thickness, I ended up selecting what was the middle frame in the end result because that frame was in the foreground in my first attempts. I just had a use for a number of copies in the magazine format, 2 5X8 1/2 pages on a single 8 1/2X11 page. Sure would have been nice to have 5 copies of the page 1 & 8 combo, then 5 copies of 2 & 7 combo etc, instead of 5 copies of page 1, then 5 copies of page 8, etc. Imbecilic question - I'm sure it's been covered before, but I couldn't seem to master page numbering. Multiple copies are printed in chronological sequence... not according to one of the Mount 'patterns'. Used to wait forever for Word Up to make multiple copies one at a time. Sure did like that program, but got tired of the bugs, plus got a TT. But what is the value of this way of printing multiple copies in mount? Hypothetical situation (but not too hypothetical for what I wanted to do ): I created a small manual, 5 X 8 1/2 page size. I wanted to send copies of it to 5 different individuals, in different parts of planet. I don't own a copy machine. Using mount and letter sized paper, you end up using 3 sheets of paper and get 5 prints of page 1, then 5 printss of page 2, etc. Pray tell, can you tell me why _anyone_ would want this output? Even though the multiple pages are 1111,4444,3333,2222, if the finished size of the page is 5.5 X 8.5, you will have 2 copies of page 1 on a single sheet of 8.5 X 11 paper. Time for the scissors. I have a list of objections, corrections and/or changes I would like to made within SL. I've been dinkering around for some time now and finally thought I would speak up and voice my complaints. I've been following the threads of this topic since it was started and must admit that a good deal of the conversation has been over my head at times. However, as I get deeper into SL and find myself beginning to use more of it's features on a regular basis, more of what goes on here makes sense. Let's start with the text style module, shall we? First, the ability to scroll through the available styles when clicking on the style mark within the text editor would be a wonderful addition. Having to click through your choices one at a time is annoying, to say the least. Working in this fashion it is almost pointless to deal with text style changes in this fashion. Yes it works well if you are dealing with only a very few fonts in your document at a time. But when you are using many styles, as I find myself dealing with in each issue of the magazine, it's next to pointless. Also, the ability to switch the positions of the styles within the listing itself would be wonderful. This would allow you to group your styles into categories or families, as it were, and make it easier to locate a particular style as you needed it. As things are now, unless you create your styles in a very careful way, they're all over the place. Yes there are work arounds, but I'd rather not. When cutting a piping chain, SL inserts a carridge return that just won't go away. Is there any way to stop this from happenin? Once again you are left with something non lethal, just annoying. I realize that some of these may not seem like such a big deal to some of you. To me they are. Changing them could make a great deal of work so much easier and cause just a little bit less stress. I hope that something can be done along these lines to help better this program. Regarding the 'tabs with a trailing space' - if you mean leader tabs, they are not active. If you literally mean a tab with a trailing space, then you are correct. In order for a tab to work, it has to 'stick' to the word it will be aligning. For a Left Tab, place the [tab]immediately in front of the word. For a Right Tab, place the[tab] right after the word with no space. For a Centering Tab, place two [tabs] immediately before and after the word. If you have something like "word [tab] word".... the tab has no effect since it is not 'stuck' to anything. On the other hand, it will have a cumulative effect: e.g. if there are three [tabs] in your ruler and you want to Left Tab a word on the third tabulator, then you would use something like [tab][tab][tab]"word". You could also use [tab][space][tab][space][tab]"word". ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 181 Thu Jun 10, 1993 SANDY.W [sysop] at 21:16 EDT Something to remember regardint TT vs ST RAM. Is it possible that you reduced your system memory before you saved the new SET file? When you say you can't load modules, do you mean that you cannot reload the ones you had temporarily deleted? If so, I cannot duplicate that situation. Are you using any ACC or DA programs that grab available RAM? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 184 Thu Jun 10, 1993 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 23:39 EDT Aha! ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 185 Thu Jun 10, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 23:55 EDT Steve another situation that can cause this is BAD RAM in the case of RAM that is either incorrectly installed or just simply flaky. What is your exact configuration. Mario @ DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 186 Fri Jun 11, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 01:47 EDT Ken S., Thanks for the information. I will look for Fontvertor at the CT AtariFest this weekend (though I do not recall if MegaType would be there again this year as it was last year, if not, maybe one of the dealers may have it). I was under the impression that I could do it with MegaType's Font Designer Plus package, but I will need Fontvertor...(hmmm maybe I am just missing it from my package...) Nathan, Thanks for the info. I will not touch the flags. I did try that once before and it failed the internal checksum, so I learned not to change the flags for Calamus. So I gather that Calamus will automatically use both ST and TT RAM when needed? Is there a way to import EPS graphics in Calamus SL? Thanks. --Lou T.-- Written: Friday, June 11, 1993 00:52 a.m. EDT ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 187 Fri Jun 11, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 11:11 EDT Yes Lou, Calamus SL will automatically use both ST and TT RAM when needed and when appropriate. We offer a standalone EPS2CVG conversion program that will allow you to convert your EPS to CVG which can then be imported into Calamus SL. It costs US $100.00. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 188 Fri Jun 11, 1993 B.AEIN [B Man] at 21:18 EDT What is the current date for SL? I am running the 2/4/92 version. Has there been updates? I just moved, and don't know where I put my DMC mailout, What will it cost to update SL? Thanks Bman ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 189 Fri Jun 11, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:08 EDT Bman, you have the original release version. There were two updates since then. The current version is August 28, 1992. A number of new modules were also released as well as other products like EPS to CVG converter, INVISION Elite and INVISION Elite Color. You can upgrade to the latest version of SL for free! You just pay the shipping and insurance charge of 10.00. If you need another mailout, leave your address in email to ISD or POTECHIN. You may also order your free update in email. ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 190 Sat Jun 12, 1993 CBARRON at 03:49 EDT Eps2cvg - Does it correctly shorten paths to cvg limits? Handle eps other than illustrator 88? Am wondering? ------------ Category 16, Topic 20 Message 191 Sat Jun 12, 1993 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 03:54 EDT One more thought on the 'endlessly' spinning yin-yang in SL. That spinning means of course that virtual memory is being used, right? So...if you have the path for vitual memory assigned to a HD partition with lots of space on it, you will see the VM write and unwrite itself to all availiable space on the HD. Try setting the limit for VM to something fairly small, like a meg and a half and see if it helps. ------------
