The dialog >box says to press ctl/shift/alt. This doesn't work. Do you mean you did not see an alert box that asked you if you want to CANCEL or CONTINUE printing? Or are you saying that the printer kept on printing? Are you sure the printer is not just emptying its buffer after you CANCEL? BTW, this message will be forwarded to the Calamus SL Topic, #20. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 3 Sat Oct 17, 1992 D.SWARTLEY [donboy] at 12:43 EDT I did see an alert box as described, but when I press those keys nothing happens, even after the printer buffer clears. I have a Panasonic KX-P1091i printer with only a 1K buffer. The alert box for 1.09N used to say to press UNDO. Even this doesn't work in SL. It did in 1.09N. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 4 Sun Nov 15, 1992 K.HEINRICHS [K.Heinrichs] at 21:53 EST I didn't really know just were to put this message but, here it goes. Lately I have been thinking that I would like to buy a new laser printer to move to a higher level of resolution. I presently am using a SLM804 and have been very happy with it. Now that HP has come out with the LaserJet IV, my thoughts of switching have become more serious. One problem is that there are no HP dealers within a short distants and I would like some input. From what I've read the PCL5 language of the HPLJ III's only improved on the fonts. Does SL see any improvements on the HPLJ III over other 300 x 300 DPI printers? Now that the HPLJ IV is out with a improved PCL5 language that claims 600 x 600 DPI, will we see an improvement over all when used with SL? And last but not least, will there have to be a seperate printer driver for the IV vs. the III? I understand that the IV has not been out long enough that many or anyone has had a chance to try it out but as I said before I am just looking for input at this time. Thankyou K.Heinrichs ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 5 Sun Nov 15, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:01 EST Don... you have to hold down those keys until you get the ABORT message. And even after that happens, there will be 2Kb of data left in your printer buffer. K.Heinrichs... there is no information currently available about drivers for the HP 4. As you said, it is real early. However, please know that one of the features of Calamus SL is its modularity... thus the ability to create new drivers. In my opinion, it will only be a short wait. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 6 Tue Nov 17, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 06:28 EST K.Heinrichs: RE: HP LaserJet IV: I'll let you know how well it works in a day or so (mine should be here by then). Nathan has assured us that he has someone developing a driver for the LJIV. Further, the DatFormer module DOES have a functioning export to HPGL now. The only problem in DataFormer as I understand it is with the PostScript end of things. You can bet I'll be looking hard at things once my LJIV arrives and will provide plenty of feedback on output quality. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 8 Thu Dec 03, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 23:23 EST Nathan... Don't forget me! I have been able to get the HP 4 to work on the 1.09n version, but not in SL. Looks great, but does take that extra time to do it's thing in 600 dpi! Thanks, Al. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 9 Fri Dec 04, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 10:49 EST Hiya Al. No way I was sending you a beta version of anything if you insist on lurking all the time. :-) We missed you. :-) CHECK your email. And POST your results please. Let's all learn how the driver is developing together in public shall we? Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 10 Sat Dec 05, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 03:04 EST Results have great! For all those who have discussed the need for 'hinted' fonts, this is the best solution. Go 600 dpi. I have spent the entire night working on changing the page size to letter and one for legal. Now it is easier to use. All grey scales are incredible!! The computers patterns are clear and crisp. The only drawback is the time. It of course takes 4 times the normal printing time at 300 dpi and 4 times the memory. The printer will do it's best on a full sized legal paper full on heavy duty grey scales or images, and it it runs out, then does an image adjustment. My HP 4 is still stock. I'm not sure if I will need an additional 2 or 4 megs to print all of the future projects that I am contemplating. I have gone back an printed out some old work and it is 4 times better. (No I am not working for HP!) Just impressed with what this ST system can do! Working, not lurking! Thanks, Al Davis ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 11 Sat Dec 05, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 09:06 EST A.H.DAVIS: The HP LJ III Driver works in Calamus SL at 300 dpi. However, Nathan now has a 600 dpi solution. The output looks great, although the driver only supports A4 page size at the moment -- contact him for details. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 12 Sat Dec 05, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 10:45 EST Al has the new 600 dpi beta driver Dave. He was referring to it. I WANT to buy one of those printers. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 13 Sat Dec 05, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 20:09 EST Life with the new prototype driver is incredible!! You can now use all of those 'slight' fonts like ARC10.CFN. Serif's are not artificially weighted so that you get distortions. Rasters and grey scales are wonderfully crisp and clear. I have made a page of font sizes on one half of a page and print it at 600 and on the second page moved the fonts to the other side, and printed it at 300, what a difference. Fonts like Times and Souvenier are good all the way down to 3 points!!! I mean they look like 300 dpi at 12 points. Now the problem seems to be the quality of paper. You really have to use laser paper or the quality is lost in the grain of the material. In rasters, you can now get 75 lines with no problem at all and not loose the speration of the dot pattern. Now you really have to use the raster generator for printing out the quality you always wanted. I really feel that all but the most discriminating customer will be more than happy with the results with this printer. Go take a look. Santa is coming, right! Update #2, Al Davis ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 14 Sat Dec 05, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 23:32 EST Keep 'em coming Al but, please, try not to make it so tantalizing :^) ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 15 Sun Dec 06, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 11:42 EST RE: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4 & Calamus SL I echo Al Davis' remarks. The output is absolutely superb. The only drawback is processing time and considering there's four times as much data this is understandable. Gut feel at this point is that the printer driver does not take four times as long to output with the 600 dpi driver as with the 300 dpi driver. I will try to do some timed tests in the near future. Bear in mind that this is 600 dpi with the HP Resolution Enhancement Technology (RET) worked on it. I believe this printer will cause a substantial reduction in the need to go Lino for output -- it's THAT clean. Unlike Al, I threw 4 MB RAM into the printer because I plan to do some PostScript output (6 MB required for PS). To be honest, I don't know how they cram all that data into 2 MB. I have found a fairly wide variation on the pricing of toner cartridges for the LJ IV. Best price so far: Publishing Perfection at $119.00 (see Computer Shopper). I'm looking for a toner recharge service that uses the ultrafine toner and haven't found any yet. If anyone knows of one I'd appreciate a note. Publishing Perfection also had good prices on RAM. Envelope feeds are smooth and wrinkle-free with 24# bond envelopes. The resident fonts (45) are superb and rival anything I've seen on the market including the IBM Lexmark series. Frankly, I believe the HP LaserJet 4 to be the hotest printer on the market today. For under $1,500.00 you get a lot of printer for your money. That's about $500.00 less than a Lexmark and I doubt there will be a Calamus SL printer driver for the Lexmark unless DMC releases the printer driver generator .CDD file and someone does the modification. Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 16 Sun Dec 06, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:23 EST Did I mention that I also have a new beta driver for the HP 550C? I am looking for an SL owner to do some testing for us please. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 17 Sun Dec 06, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 17:05 EST Al: I"m getting EXCELLENT results using Hammermill 24# Laser Print Paper for routine printing. Neenah Laser Comptible Classic Laid is also great for letterhead and correspondance. I've found the 24# envelopes of the same type do not wrinkle when run through the LJ IV as well. Lou: Al's comments are not over-blown. The results with this print are VERY impressive. I think it will put a serious dent in any need to go Lino for output. It's THAT good. Bear in mind that you are actually getting soemwhat better than 600 dpi due to Resolution Enhancement. How much better? 'Ah dunno... but I can tell you it's damn good. Check Nathan's reaction when he gets the hard copy I mailed him. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 19 Mon Dec 07, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 00:46 EST The more that I use the HP LJ 4 the more I am amazed. I find that now it is just harder to go back and look at the old stuff I did on the HP II. I am now busy reprinting some of my old documents for my personal use and what a difference in clarity. Time is a major consideration, but rather than send a page to be lino'd this I can live with. I just wish with the new driver or a futher version of Calamus SL that the option to print multiple documents would come into reality. I could just go to bed and 'walla' in the morning it would be finished. One thing that does help printing speed is to leave the screen viewing size of the document at the lowest possible settings. It just takes extra time to clear the VM folders for printing. A multiple tray option to choose from the print menu would be nice also. I also notice that the driver is not set up for TIFF. No time difference in printing but maybe in the final release. Also a tech tip.. the new ending code should be for END RASTER GRAPHICS *rC instead of *rB. This is the 'peferred way' that HP wants now. Like who cares if it works, right. Back to Calamus. Thanks, Al ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 20 Mon Dec 07, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 09:40 EST Thanks for the info Al. We appreciate it. By the way, the JOB module is exactly what you need to queue. Guess what I'm going to be playing with this weekend? :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 23 Tue Dec 08, 1992 L.LOZO1 at 06:10 EST Naytham i went to receive attached files after i got your message, ant the hp4 driver was not there, also i was also after the hp550c driver as well, Also HP head office is 3 minutes drive from my store!!! The HP 4 driver for SL, does that require 4 or 6 meg Ram in laser? or is the stock 2 meg will do all? ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 24 Tue Dec 08, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 06:50 EST Al: >I also notice that the driver is not set up for TIFF. Is it that the LJIV Driver is "not set up for TIFF" or the TIFF file is set at 300 x 300 dpi? I tried TIFFs as well on my LJIV and found no change in quality. I made the assumption that they were scanned at 300 dpi therefore there should be no gain based on printer resolution -- of course you might be using 600 dpi TIFFs.... Like you, I'm reprinting many documents. REALLY folks, hinting is no longer a need at 600 dpi. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 25 Tue Dec 08, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 11:47 EST Go look again Lucas. :-) Dave and Al, how much RAM do you have in your HP IV? I was just next door at Ditek. They put an extra 8 meg in theirs for a total of 10 meg. I'll play with it this weekend I imagine. Meanwhile, I received a package from Dave today containing sample output from his HP IV. I can conclude that this quality at this price will have a major impact on DTP AND service bureaus in that many applications appear great at 600 dpi and will no longer require higher res output at a bureau. A good example is a business card etc.. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 26 Tue Dec 08, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:14 EST Binary.... Nathan pulled a little trick on me today. We were talking about the HP4 output and he handed me a sample page - which I thought was 600 dpi - and I said, "Hmmm, not much better than 300, is it?" Then he handed me the real 600dpi page. WOW!!!! It looks like hi-res output. UNBELIEVABLE! Thanks for sending those great samples. I just decided on my next hardware purchase - the HP4 for hi res output in the HOME! ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 27 Wed Dec 09, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:33 EST Nathan: I plugged 4 MB (SIMM - easy installation) of additional RAM into the LaserJet IV. The main reason for doing this is that Hewlett-Packard says this is the minimal RAM for PostScript work. Even though I now have the LaserJet IV, as you've already noted, there will be times when PS output will be necessary. I plugged the 4 MB SIMM in while setting up the printer and thus have no experience running without it. The HP specs do claim you can run with the stock HP and output at 600 dpi. I believe this is what Al is doing. As far as I can see, other than the need for the additional RAM for PS there really is no need to plus up on RAM (that's a switch, HUH?). As far as RAM needs go, I did get a good price on a Pacific Data SIMM at Publishing Perfection (Computer Shopper). I did that in checking the market, RAM was HIGHLY variable in price right now. I would recommend that anyone buying RAM shop around for the best price. You stand to save $150 or more! The PostScript SIMM wasn't available when I ordered my printer andc I elected to hold off on ordering it. I would assume that third party companies will introduce their own versions of PS for the LJ IV. Notable among them is Pacific Data which has marketed the PacPage and PacPAge XL cartridges for the HP III printers. These carts have reputation for being MUCH faster than HP PostScript. I'm not certain if the existing LJ III PacPage XL carts will work on the LJ IV. I would like to know as suddenly there are several HP LJ III's hitting the market in Atlanta -- some with PacPage carts. I would cut a deal with someone for the cartridge alone if I knew it would work on the LJ IV. One other option that folks may consider is purchasing the LaserJet 4M. The 4M is a Macintosh version. The only differences are PS is built in, 6 MB RAM is stock (for PS), and there's an AppleTalk port. It runs about $500 more than the LJ IV. Advantage: if you where to sell an LJ 4M down the road you would have the Mac market open to you. Also, it's less expense than adding on all the extras. This is beginning to look like an anthology, so I'm open to questions if anyone has any..... Lou: Yeah -- like I've been saying SUPERB OUTPUT!!! I can say would hesitation that the LJ 4 has already made some sales for me. I can't help but wonder how long it'll be before the rest of the DTP market catches on.... I believe the LJ IV will be the default standard like TOMORROW. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 28 Wed Dec 09, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 10:39 EST Thanks for the post Dave. I do agree. The HP IV is HOT!! ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 29 Wed Dec 09, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 19:29 EST I received some mail from Lucas out of Austech Computers in Australia. I also sent him the beta HP IV driver. He says: hi mate I tested the HP4. It worked great with impressive results. A normal text page prints at 600 dpi with 2 m/b in the laser printer. Anything with some graphics requires 6 m/b. If you try and print with only 2 mb you get an "ADAPT page" message on the HP4 LED display and a poor quality print out. So the recommended base config for the HP4 is an HP4 with and extra 4 meg. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 30 Wed Dec 09, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 20:58 EST Gone to 6 megs. I too find that the ADAPT IMG results in a 300 dpi image of the printed page. You can use the 2 meg for some small text or img documents, but anything with around 25% graphics, either raster or vector push the 2 megs to the limit. Found the paper to match the HP 4. I suggest the Hammermill Laser Plus with wax holdout. This paper under high magnification is flawless. Perfect to work with the ultra fine toner that the HP 4 uses. A little bit more than Hammermill Laser, but I feel worth the price. Give it a go! Good for only one sided printing, but that's all you need for finals, and proofs. I am working on drivers for the raster generator and find that now you can have twice as many combinations because of the higher density. Look great though. Good printing, Al. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 31 Wed Dec 09, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 21:00 EST By the way, tell Lucas at Austech Computers "hi" from Al in Ohio. Lucas is quite the Atarian. I enjoyed the visit and miss OZ. Enjoy the printer. Again, thanks Al. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 32 Wed Dec 09, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 21:17 EST Lucas ... I just saw their table model IMAGE Plotter and for some strange reason I would like to know if there is a driver so one could be used with Calamus SL? Cliff (Ashevillite) P.S. Glad to hear the new on the HP IV dirver sucess and will ask Santa Claus. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 34 Fri Dec 11, 1992 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 02:32 EST A.H., Can you test a few questions for me on yer new printer? You say 6 megs for about 25% graphics....what happens with a page that is densely covered with many complex raster and vector graphics? What are the 'minimal margins' on the page on all four sides? How does it do in Legal size and with tiling frames for larger than normal pages? How does it do when reducing a larger page, say to print at 50%? How long does it take to print a text page, a heavy graphics page? BTW, ...I agree about the Hammermill Laser Plus with wax back...it's the best stuff, period, amen! I get it by the case which cuts the price a little. Thanks for the info you've posted and I look forward to more. %^) ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 35 Fri Dec 11, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 02:51 EST ORCA, I'm sorry, but I probably didn't make myself clear on that last one. I had originally only used the stock HP 4 with 2 megs. That is the one with the 25% graphics saturation point before the printer went into Image Adaptation mode. I then ran up to the 6 megs and have had no further problems. I still use the old 'minimim margin' term from 1.09n. It basically means that the printer is set by the driver to print to the very edge of it's capability. This will vary on each printer and within a model line. I find that the settings that I entered into the drivers that I uploaded to Nathan are the limits that my HP LJ 4 can use. I have used tiling only to a small degree with my tests but they seem to do just fine and use more paper area with less overlap needed. The reduction area would be fine if the total graphics area was again less than 25% of the total resulting page area. In essence you are taking a 300 image and printing it at 300 - no problem. BUT when you make a 600 x 600 graphic of the same area it is using 4x's the memory. The 2 megs that come with the HP 4 is equal to the 1/2 meg that originally came with the HP 2 that I had and I found it to be of similiar in it's memory usage. If you really wanted to push the limits, a 8 1/2 by 11 600 dpi scanned image would equal out to around 8 megs. I wouldn't suggest sending 'that' to the printer at 6 megs or less, but then I wouldn't want to wait for it to print either. Just imagine the toner use on a full brochure of that dense printing. Most designers would recommed a formula for the amount of high resolution pictures on a page and if you find one for your use, I'm sure you will be using less than 50% at the very most. Very easy for the HP 4 with 6 megs to utilize and you to live with. Hope that helps, Al. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 36 Fri Dec 11, 1992 L.LOZO1 at 03:40 EST Good to hear from you AL? how was you visit to austrlia? There is a very simple way how you work out required Mem for Laser Res * Res * Hor size" * Vert size" = number of bits of ram divide this by 8 = Bytes of ram eg: for HP4 running 11.5"x8.5" paper 600x600x11.5x8.5 = 35,190,000 pixels /8 = 4.4Mb Ram per page~r so the best way is to have 6m/b ram in laser also if you read the hp4 manual carefully it also says it needs 6MB ram to run 600 dpi in protected mode. the HP4M has 6 m/b and postscript standard, Calamus users do not need postscript. So save save money people buy the HP4 with 2 Meg and buy a 4MB 32 bit simm thay should be around the $180 mark US$$ Postscipt can be added later if you find you need it. The above formulae should work with just about any page printer. However the linotron works with only 2 M/B this is because the drum stops & starts imageing the page in sections~r. If you have a worn linotron you can actually see a faint line every 2 Inches or so, depending on what res you are printing. So i wonder when a 1200dpi Laser is coming????? regards lucas @ Austech ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 37 Fri Dec 11, 1992 K.HEINRICHS [K.Heinrichs] at 17:58 EST Nathan, Can you tell me how far away we are from getting a driver for the HPLJ 4 that has the works? Is it possible to send/print ascii type files to the HPLJ from the desktop? ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 38 Sat Dec 12, 1992 G.GORMAN2 at 01:41 EST Hi all, I'm new here. Just joined GEnie. Of course for the SL support. Anyway, does anyone have a complete printer driver for the HP Deskjet 500? The one that comes with Calamus SL will not print envelopes. When I try to alter the source file, it won't accept my codes. Like the envelope code is a 3. But when I try to make the .CDT file, it says that a setting is wrong. Be patient, one of our fellow Calamus types will explain all shortly (I hope). :-) Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 41 Sat Dec 12, 1992 S.SAMUELS [ORCA] at 22:48 EST Lou,..ever seen the output of the LazerMaster line of printers? 1200 dpi on paper up to tabloid size. However, I would clearly point out that LM 1200 dpi is not as good as lino 1200 dpi and the pres. of their company agrees, but they get better each year. Cost is still high, ie. pushing 10 grand. The HP IV sounds interesting, but I don't see much real use at high end ....ok, sure...quicky business cards, etc, and improved flyers, etc., well and good, but gee folks, 1200 dpi on lino is the LOW end of the industry! 2450 dpi is pretty common, especially for stuff going to color seps. Let's not toss away a persective that embraces the major part of the 'professional' DTP world. Al, thanks for the report on 600 x 600. I still think I'm gonna hang with the atari laser for proofing because of the speed and lino for output cuz of the resolutions and film capabilities. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 42 Sun Dec 13, 1992 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 08:36 EST K.HEINRICHS: RE: ASCII from the Desktop - You bet! You don't get the fancy scalable fonts but I'm sure you could send some PCL to get them. I've had to use the LJIII driver for WordPerfect. I called and asked them about a driver for the LJIV and was told they no longer supported WordPerfect on the Atari platform. That was news to me! I knew they weren't supporting DEVELOPMENT but understod they were supporting what was already there. The customer service person I spoke with was somewhat aloof and you could tell they were on the verge of saying "Isn't the Atari a GAMES machine?". This was a first for WordPerfect. I have _always_ found them to provide superb support. Bottom line is there seems to be a problem with sematics. At any rate they recommended I use the LJII driver which I've not attempted due to teh LJIII driver working fine. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 44 Mon Dec 14, 1992 J.HICKEY6 at 10:53 EST All - Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale CA has the HPLJ-IV for $1399 and 4 Meg upgrade for $229.99. Also, Computer Chronicles review of Comdex reported on a third party upgrade for the HPLJ-IV to 1200DPI, yup, 1200DPI. Jack ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 45 Mon Dec 14, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 11:14 EST Chances are a 1200 dpi upgrade is simply dithered enhancements for PostScript. The most exciting part of the HP IV is that it is a true 600 dpi engine at a much more affordable price than had ever been the case previously. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 46 Wed Dec 16, 1992 A.H.DAVIS at 04:13 EST I have run a simple test to check the timing of the HP LJ 4 and here are the results. I have a Mega ST 4 running at 8 MHz. Using a moniterm monitor, and Warp 9. The HP 4 is configured with 6 megs. Results have some variation in multiple runs. Variation is less than 15% in most cases. Using 1.09n and printing the SAMPLE.CDK from ISD; Start 300 dpi 600 dpi Box appears instant instant Print ends 1:13 4:13 about 3 1/2 times longer for 600 dpi! Using SL and printing the SAMPLE.CDK from ISD; Start 300 dpi 600 dpi Box appears 2 sec 55 sec Print ends 1:29 5:23 a little over 3 1/2 times longer! One point that was apparant is the fact that when printing at 600 dpi with Calamus SL you would be wise to close the Print Option screen before changing the resolution of the next print. This will allow for the emptying of the VM folders. I hope this gives some idea of the times that I am getting, with my HP 4. Unfortunately, this board uses TWO boards - one for the DOS Box slot and one in the LJ IV. It's also quite expensive. The two supplied drivers in SL, that would work with the 330, did not perform well. The Epson LQ was to heavy, it soaked the paper with ink. The bubblejet driver did not work well, I don't remember the reason, but I used the SL printer driver generator, to put together a driver that works very well, with one small porblem. I get a number of thin horizontal white lines going across the page, as the printhead makes a pass and drops down to make another, it will leave a thin white space on occasion, some are very fine and some are noticeable. The quality of what is printed is excellent, similar in feel to the SL manual, clean type and clear graphics. This "problem" does not happen else where, such as a text dump, or from EasyDraw, and I have cleaned and primed the 330's print head, numerious times. So does anyone have an idea, what I could do or where I might go to find out, how to solve this problem? Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 86 Thu Feb 04, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:05 EST The amount of memory shouldn't affect how much of the page is printed, because the printer has the "Image Adapt" function which steps the engine down to 300dpi when a complex page is too much to process, and it stays there until you reset. Regarding memory, I couldn't get the extra coupla megs when I brought the printer home, so I figured I'd just make do printing out simple files and go back for the SIMMs in a few days. But, what I found is that about 90% of what I've been feeding to the printer outputs perfectly at 600dpi. This includes a 5 panel cassette label in landscape on a full legal page, and pages chock full of vector graphics and clip art, ads, letters with art borders, etc. I'm truly surprised, having expected to need at least 4 megs to output anything of complexity. Where it *will* step down to 300dpi everytime is if I draw a simple gray raster area that's bigger than 5x5 or something like Stephen's 50_Grays cdk where there are fifty shaded boxes. I can get that to print if I clip a row out and print. I still need more memory of course, but the point is the out of the box printer is much more useful than I'd been led to believe... ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 87 Thu Feb 04, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:54 EST That is great news Dennis. And it's funny what'll print and won't. I have a promo sheet that's filled top to bottom with about 15 different cvgs and it prints out just fine - but like I mentioned, if I draw *one* shaded box on a page and make it bigger than about 5x5, it's too much for the printer to handle. And yet something like the Jitney and Gunth filling one page outputs fine. Weird. I'll be picking up them SIMMs of course, but I'm definitely a 2 meg envelope pusher :-) (find your own pun there)... I may also be the only person to actually speed up his output times by going to 600dpi. My LJIII *never* managed to work with the parallel port, despite a line booster and pounds of good advice here and elsewhere. Fortunately it worked just fine with the PC of the guy I sold it to. The LJIV doesn't have that spec problem, so things are actually coming out about 35% faster compared to the LJIII serial port. I have tried new ink carts and priming, refreshing the print head to no avail. Let me state the problem over again, with some additional info that I have found. The BJ 330 has a tractor and a friction(single sheet) mode. The friction mode eliminates 99 percent of this problem. Its the tractor mode that causes the white lines, as the head finishes a pass the tractor pushes the paper up, sometimes a little to far and I get a white line. I studied the codes in the BJ 330 hand- book, but can't find anyway to tweak, a code or a number, to reduce the tractor advance by just a little. Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 118 Mon Apr 05, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 23:28 EDT If youse got a printer port on your computer then get the standard. The M has a Mac specific interface, Appletalk and whatever, that'll do you no good and cost about $500 more. I don't get it cause the Mac versions of the DJ and Color DJ cost about the same as the DOS versions. I just plugged 'er in and it worked fine. And the standard 2 meg memory will handle about 90% of what you throw at it, portrait and landscape, unless your page has a grey area bigger than about 5x5, then it'll bump down to 300 dpi but still print. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 119 Mon Apr 05, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 23:31 EDT Has anyone tried any of the 1000-1200 dpi printers? I had just put in a lot of time on a 365 day calendar that showed my schedule at work (three shift rotation). Each time frame was represented by a different raster precentage. Also there is enough room for me to put my hours worked for each day. This all fits on a single side of a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Well anyway I was really proud of what I had made. At the time I had 6 meg in the LJ4. So when I tried to print it and it dropped down to 300 dpi (for those that don't know, the LJ4 does this automaticly when memory is limited), it really ticked me off. At that weak point in time, money must not have been important because I ran to my dealer and bought 4 more meg of RAM. The HP4 presently has one, the STraight Fax has 3 and the SLM 804 has 6). (IMHO) In order for this to be fixed there has to be a protocol for assigning paper sizes (if this is even possible). I recently purchased it for use with my LJ4 and encountered some problems with it bombing. I contacted the author, Frank Pawlowski, and he found the source of the error (addressing differences between the Falcon and the ST). Frank asked me to run some time trials for him as he didn't have an LJ4. What follows is my reply back regarding speed with the OutBurST! patched driveres: I got some interesting results when running some time trials with OutBurST! with Calamus SL and the HP LJ4. I don't necessarily believe all of this is related to OutBurST!. Let me explain: In printing a document from Calamus SL there are actually TWO dialogs that appear. The first has a title of "Print Document/Printer Setup" the second has no title, but the top line reads; "Page ___ is Drawing/(Printing)". If you power-off cold boot, load a document, and print it, what you'll find is an exceptionally long delay while the program sits at the "Print Document/Printer Setup" dialog and displays the Busy Bee mouse pointer. Eventually, the second dialog appears and the program goes through the drawing/printing modes necessary to output the entire page. Now we come to the tricky bit -- if you go back into Calamus SL and return to the printing dialog and print the document a second time you'll find the the business with the busy bee pointer either doesn't occur or very briefly occurs. I don't know what the program does during that mode--maybe clearing memory or something--but my gut feel is that it should happen every time. It ONLY happens on the first printing pass. Anyway, the bottom line is that this time dramatically increases the totally printing time. I've taken the time to break down the times for the purposes of time trials. The sample document had a mix of text, graphics, and vectors. Regardless of how you look at it OutBurST! has the edge. +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ | Conditions | Driver | Pg ___ Dialog | Total Printing| | | Used | Appears | Time | +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ | Power Off Cold Boot | Orig. | 7:51 | 10:11 | +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ | Second Printing | Orig. | 0:14 | 2:26 | +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ | Power Off Cold Boot |Outburst| 1:08 | 2:48 | +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ | Second Printing |Outburst| 0:10 | 1:45 | +---------------------+--------+-------------------+---------------+ So what this works out to is on the first printing OutBurST! prints in 1/4 the time of the original driver. On the second printing, the OutBurST! driver take 2/3's the time of the original. To the best of my recollection I didn't experience this before using the LJ4 driver with Calamus. I'd be interested in anyone else's input regarding this delay in going to the second printing dialog. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 158 Wed May 26, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 06:34 EST Binary, Thanks you seem to have hit on a factor I had not considered and perhaps why my experiences with OutBurst have been lack-luster in the the speed department while others have offered such rave reviews. I switched to letter sized paper format on the printer driver, printed the same pages and, lo and behold, everything printed correctly! I am very happy with the results. The colour output is superb and comes very close to the Pantone colours. I am using the Paintjet XL300 driver and converted it from DIN to Letter and Legal format. However, the top margin moves almost 3/4 of an inch down and the bottom is cut off. It also moves 1/4'' to the right. Perhaps there are still some remnants of the European format. Is there a working driver for us available. I remember a similar problem existed for the Deskjet500. If this little irritant can be fixed - I would say the HP 1200C is the next best thing after a $ 10,000 colour printer and equals in print quality the HP IV in black& white. Wolf ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 161 Fri Jul 16, 1993 JWKUEHN [Wolf] at 22:24 EDT I have experimented with the printer driver for the HP XL300 which is recommended to be used with the HP 1200C. The page is now centered but I still have almost 1/2 " margin at the top which cuts the bottom off. I tried all kinds of combinations without improvement. I really like this printer. The colour out-put is stunning. With a 32 lpcm raster and the 500C colour separation curve the colour consistency comes close to the PANTONE colours depending on paper. Even with regular paper I have printed GIF, TIFF and JPEG pictures you could hardly tell from a Canon Laser. The only problem - and this is true for all ink-jets is it prints slightly darker than the screen showes. Also I wonder why the raster settings cannot be saved with the system. It defaults every time a print a new page. Sometimes I can print only two pages in a row. Is there are timing problem. I get the message "your printer is disconnected". Unfortunately the HP1200C does not have any dip switches for this purpose. It must be done through the printer-driver. Perhaps you remember the control code? It must be something like &10L or &11L. It seemed very solid (especially since this was not even the "finished" driver). So I look forward to the new driver that you mentioned here. You may be getting confused with the HP LaserJet 4L (which is only 300dpi). But the HP LaserJet 4 and 4M are both 600dpi. The 4M offers more built into the printer such as more RAM (6 megs), postscript, Appletalk, etc.. So far from the limited tests I have done, the Calamus SL printer driver for the HP LJ4 works fairly well. I am looking forward to the new one as well though. Happy printing... --Lou T.-- Written: Sunday, August 15, 1993 03:21 a.m. EDT ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 172 Sun Aug 15, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 11:40 EDT Nathan or Mario, I got the beta version for the 550C printer. Much improved, I must say. Of course, I'm happy just to be able to use American-size paper sizes. Question(s): 1. There is a button that shows up in the printer dialog area when you load the driver (can't remember the German name). When you click on this, the bottom half of the box that appears seems to be for the type of paper you will be using (regular, transparency, gloss - nice touch). I'm not quite sure what the upper half is for, however. It appears they change with each type of paper you can select, but you can also adjust them manually. Just curious to know what it does so I can test it better. 2. Also included was a .CK7 file for the Color Seperator. Under what circumstances do I need to use this if I am also using the .CK4 in the Linearity module? I guess my confusion lies in the relationship between the color seperator control lines and the ones used in the linearity module. Until I got the first beta version of this driver, I thought changing lines in the Color Seperator module would allow me direct color control to my 550C. Now that I need the Linearity module to do this, I am confused. The only differences I can see in the Color Seperator are the UCR control and the ability to change a frame, page or document as opposed to the Linearity module which adjusts color info to the printer. Thanks in advance (as always). A good U2U on this would be great. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 173 Sun Aug 15, 1993 R.VOORNEVELD [BOB] at 13:09 EDT Lou T., Sorry about the confusion of the dpi's. The LJ4 is really a great printer and I am sure you will really enjoy it. For other programs that don't have LJ 4 drivers I've found that most L II & LJ III drivers work at 300dpi. Bob ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 174 Sun Aug 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 16:50 EDT By the way, does anyone happen to own an Epson Stylus 800? Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 175 Sun Aug 15, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 23:29 EDT A readme file was included with the latest HP550C beta driver that has been sent out to those of you that expressed an interest. Unfortunately, it was in German so I had it translated over the weekend and just got that translation back: Important reminder for HP DeskJet 550C! ======================================= This disk contains the following files: HPDJ550C.RME This file HPDJ550C.CDT Printer driver for CALAMUS SL (copy to the folder 'Printer') LIN.CXM Module to adjust the printer gradation (copy to the folder 'Modules') DEFLIN.CK4 Optimized control line for the DJ 550C (copy to the folder 'Modules') FARB_SEP.CK7 Default colour separation setting for the DJ 550C (copy to the folder 'Colours') The output of the DJ 550C is extremely unlinear. If you were to print with neutral control lines, the result would be a page smeared with colour. This does not represent the possible quality of this printer. CALAMUS SL: =========== To prevent this problem we have created the module "LIN.CXM" which allows you to adjust the gradation of any printer. But we urge you to be careful, since this module affects the gradation of all printers. You should proceed with the installation by first copying the files into their designated folders. After that, you should copy the file DJ550_LI.CK4 into the module folder and rename it to DEFLIN.CK4. When running the LIN module this file will then automatically be loaded. If you use more than one printer you should not save the LIN module not with your setup, but load it only when printing. Please also be reminded to remove the LIN module for memory again before you output to another printer. Also copy the file COLR_SEP.CK7 into the folder 'COLOURS' (or the equivalent folder, if you have changed the paths) in your Calamus directory. The colour separation information is very important since otherwise black is printed with 400% (100% for C,Y,M,K respectively) if you have set up with RGB values (also with 3 colour images). It would be best if you would use a four-coloured (CYMK) colour definition in the future, as it is also commonly used in the printing industry. CALAMUS S: ========== With Calamus S you don't have to look after anything, the control lines are also contained in the driver. On the other hand you DON'T have any influence on colour and raster. It would be best if you would use a four-coloured (CYMK) colour definition in the future, as it is also commonly used in the printing industry. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 181 Thu Aug 19, 1993 C.ALLEN17 [Cliff] at 20:11 EDT Nathan, We, Sheldon and I, talked to a man today that was showing us info on a 1200 dpi printer (ImagerPlus 12) that, even though on vacation, looked us up because we are an Atari Dealer. Even knows about Calamus and SL and states his company supplies a driver with this printer. Nave you heared of this printer (beautiful printouts)? This printer will do 600 dpi drafts and 1200 dpi proofs. Contains PostScript, PCL IV, and HPGL plotter emulators. Comes standard with 40MB upgradeable to 96 MB. Handles up to 11x17 sheets and will print edge to edge. Let me know and I will FAX you the literature he dropped off. Come on Ed MacMann. This eliminates the problem of font computability. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 184 Fri Aug 20, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 10:19 EDT Lou, Joe's answer is correct. You can currently purchase Dataformer to create PS files or wait a while and get BRIDGE which does PS and a number of other things. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 185 Fri Aug 20, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 22:20 EDT Cliff, Do you suppose you could photocopy and mail the info to me? Sheldon should have my address in his files. :-) Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 186 Sat Aug 21, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou @Machine] at 00:56 EDT Lou, I have heard of Dataformer, but offhand I am not sure about BRIDGE. Thanks for the information. So far I had only time to do a few tests with Calamus SL and the HP LJ4 printer driver. From the few tests I did do, it seemed pretty fast. I just thought it would be even faster if printed to the printer in straight postscript. --Lou T.-- Written: Saturday, August 21, 1993 00:17 a.m. EDT ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 189 Sun Aug 22, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 15:06 EDT Hey anyone: I have the most recent HP550C driver. I was pleased to see added improvements, and especially American page sizes. Yesterday, I was doing a few pages in landscape mode (letter size), and had an unusual printable area on the right sid of the page. It looked to be about a 1/2-3/4" space to the edge of the page. Consequently, I couldn't print my full page, it would cut off at the right side. I tried to use the .CDD and Printer Generator Module (the one that came with the driver), but it still wouldn't give me the printable area I want. It would show it, but not print it. Anyway, I should be able to print out to the edges to about 1/8". I also lose all the new stuff added to the original driver (i.e., button called "Farbkorr." in Print Document dialogue box, which allows choice of paper type). Can anyone confirm this or provide a solution? I understand this is only a beta version, so I'm not griping, but wanted to report this problem. Thanks, Tom ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 190 Sun Aug 22, 1993 S.WINICK at 21:00 EDT Ken, I'll double check on Cliff tomorrow to make sure he can find your address in the database. ;-] By the way, the July Colorado trip was great. The only problem came when we couldn't get across Independence pass because of a snow storm that closed the road the afternoon we needed to come across. Wound up taking the long way around to Aspen the next morning and came back across Independence pass a few days later on our way back to Denver. Thanks for the recommendations --- we had a great trip. The 1200 dpi laser printer specs look very impressive. We should be able to get a copy of them in the mail to you tomorrow. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 191 Sun Aug 22, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 22:12 EDT BRIDGE will eventually be the upgrade for the Dataformer Module, Lou. Calamus SL should be faster in its native mode and WYSIWYG using the HP4 than anything you could do using PostScript. And at 600 dpi, the quality in Calamus' native mode is excellent! Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 194 Sat Aug 28, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 20:58 EDT Sheldon and Cliff Thanks for the info on ImagerPlus 12. Did a little research after getting the info. The manufacturer's name, NEWGEN, rang a bell. They have been making Mac compatible printers for some time. So off I went to my latest copy of MacUser. (I'm a GCR owner!) Sept. issue, page 236, is an ad for the ImagerPlus printer, 800-756-0556 for details. Typical ad, doesn't tell you much. Same issue has extensive article on PS printers for the Mac. Based solely on a quick look at the charts, NewGEn doesn't rate all that well, but then the LJ IIIP didn't either in one area. LJ4 did get one pick. I think the only way to know what you are going to get from a laser, when doing anything other than text, is to try one with your software. _Not_ an easy task. Also, the Aug issue of Computer Shopper has an add from Publishing Perfection where they list a NewGen Turbo PS1200 B. I wonder if the ImagerPlus is just the latest model? A dollar will get you a doughnut (even in Alaska ) that it is only a 600 dpi engine, with resolution enhancement technology (Love big techie words!) to get 1200 dpi. Would be interesting to see how it compares to HP LJ4. Especially when printing fonts in small point sizes. I'd be afraid to ask the price. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 195 Mon Aug 30, 1993 TPHOMMEL [brother Denn] at 07:42 EDT This is my umpteenth request: does anyone have a driver for the HP LJ II that actually works without offsets and works when printing multiple pages (not multiple copies, but multiple pages). Or could someone even get me a raw file for the printer generator, one that is in English with North American page sizes, etc.? If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. It really ticks me off that a programme as great as Calamus SL falls apart at that level, the printer driver. Isn't that the purpose of the programme, to get the output to paper??? Dennis ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 196 Mon Aug 30, 1993 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 08:37 EDT Dennis, I've forgotten the details of the problem with the HP LJII driver. I'm using the LJII driver for my LJIIIp and have been for a while. "Works without offsets"? Not sure what you mean. But I don't "add" extra margin or anything to get it to work. I definitely print multiple pages with it. Either multiple copies, multiple pages, or multiple copies of multiple pages. -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 197 Tue Aug 31, 1993 TPHOMMEL [brother Denn] at 07:03 EDT Harry, using the supplied HP LJ II driver with SL, if I try to print a mutli- page document, the first page prints pretty much OK; succeeding pages are shifted to on side, approximately 3/8"! Keep in mind that happens if I use the driver as a parralel device; if I switch to 'Other' there is no offset, but print time almost quadruples! I want a driver that works... Dennis ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 198 Tue Aug 31, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 18:25 EDT Hey all: Does anyone know if there are any available drivers for the QMS-420? I talked to a guy from QMS about it, he can't confirm an LJ4 driver would work. I'd like to know about this, the 420 is comparable to the LJ4 (600 dpi), but includes PostScript I&II, and various PCL to take advantage of LJII & III. And it's cheaper, too! I'd like to take advantage of 600 dpi if I do get this printer, so any info given would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 199 Tue Aug 31, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 19:36 EDT Tom, I have been drooling over the QMS 230. The 420 sounds better. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 200 Tue Aug 31, 1993 T.HENRY12 [Tom Jr.] at 23:39 EDT Hey, Lou, get a drool bucket. I saw the 420 going for $1,995 in BYTE magazine. That's from an ad from QMS, so street price will most likely be lower. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 201 Tue Aug 31, 1993 J.RENNER1 [Kheldar] at 23:45 EDT to all those using SL with an HP II compatible. I use the printer driver from 1.09 and everything works fine. No offset or multiple page problems. All you have to do is rename the file 'cause the extensions are different. Why they haven't fixed it, who can say. (only the shadow knows! And prbably a pocket protected german geek.) Jim. ------------ Category 16, Topic 23 Message 202 Wed Sep 01, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 00:07 EDT Yikes! That means about 1600.00 on the street. How does it compare to the Spectra*Star printers?
