This topic is for discussion and support of Calligrapher - the next-generation document processor from CodeHead Technologies and Working Title US. 198 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 1 Thu Jan 14, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:53 EST For Immediate Release CodeHeadQuarters Tuesday, January 12, 1993 ------------------------- ******************************************************* * * * Calligrapher 3 * * * * The Next Generation Of The Ultimate Writing Machine * * * ******************************************************* LOS ANGELES - CodeHead Technologies and Working Title US are proud to announce the release of Calligrapher 3! If you're already familiar with Calligrapher, you know it's a powerful, intuitive, graphics-based word processor. Now, Calligrapher 3 adds terrific new features, streamlines the installation procedure, is compatible with the Falcon030 and MultiTOS, and no longer uses GDOS! This document describes the enhancements and changes in Calligrapher 3, as well as the procedure for upgrading to version 3. If you are unfamiliar with Calligrapher and its features, you can obtain an excellent overview by trying out the Calligrapher 3 demo package, available by calling CodeHead Technologies (213) 386-5735, or by downloading the demo from any of the popular online networks. Enhancements -------------- o GDOS (G+Callig) and Line_Arc have been built into Calligrapher itself, so there is no longer any special startup disk and nothing is required in the AUTO folder. This makes it much more compatible with other GDOS programs since there is no overlap, and also makes installation and setup MUCH easier and less trouble-prone. o If you have a hard disk and 2Mb, Calligrapher displays vector fonts on screen. The new edition caches screen fonts more intelligently, speeding up the opening of documents and moving through documents that contain vector fonts. o Supports Esc-P2 printers (Epson Dot Matrix printers that support 360dpi compressed mode). o Allows you to reduce the amount of memory taken by Calligrapher to make it compatible with multitasking operating systems such as MultiGem and MultiTOS. o A new easy-to-use fast install program supporting 1.44Mb disk drives and the new features of Calligrapher. This program uses a GEM dialog box and is more intelligent; it reads in as many files as will fit in memory and then writes them to the hard drive, and requires a minimal amount of disk swapping. o Templates - documents with the extension CAT, are treated as base documents. (Similar to 'stationery' documents on the Macintosh.) Calligrapher will prompt you to rename them when they are saved. Also there is a default template that is loaded when Calligrapher is first started. This allows you, for example, to save the ruler settings for your default ruler. o The FlexText module now allows you to USE ANY URW typeface, not just the included ones. o On a TT, Calligrapher now moves its code into TT RAM to run 30% faster. o Import/export of Rich Text Format (RTF) files has been added to the import module. These files allow you to keep the style and fonts within a document, together with any footnotes, when you transfer to other programs that support RTF. o The integral symbol and brackets in Calligrapher's mathematical formulae have been improved. o There are new commands in formulae to cover set symbols, and things such as products. Equivalents have been added in the interactive formula editor. o When you adjust markers on the ruler (margins, tabs, etc.), a vertical line is drawn to help you gauge positions. o Mark a section and increase or decrease all font sizes proportionally (by the proportion 9/10ths or 10/9ths). o Keyboard shortcuts have been added to the interactive formula editor. o A new program allows you to change Calligrapher's internal setup. This allows adjustments to its memory, printer and other internal details. o The supplementary language disks have been improved. Spanish includes a Catalan dictionary and a Spanish thesaurus. German has a German dictionary and thesaurus. Italian has a Catalan dictionary. o A triple click on a paragraph selects the whole paragraph. o When running under a multitasking operating system, the disk-based clipboard is switched on, allowing you to cut and paste text dynamically between applications. o Two printers are supported at the same time, allowing you to switch between them at print time. o A separation line has been added between footnotes and the body of text. o Calligrapher 3 remembers the pathname when inserting multiple graphics into a document. o There is a driver for the Ricoh 1200 laser printer at 400dpi. System Requirements ------------------- o Calligrapher 3 Professional requires 1 Mb of RAM and a floppy disk. Calligrapher 3 Gold requires 1 Mb and a hard disk. Version 3 requires more memory than version 2, so if your documents are at the limit of memory with version 2, you will be over the limit with version 3. New Fonts --------- o There are 20 new URW typefaces available, number 67 through 86. o These new fonts will only work with version 3 of Calligrapher. o Previously purchased font disks can be re-installed to work with Calligrapher 3 by using a new install program included with the upgrade. o Font charts files will be uploaded to the online services, allowing you to print out sample displays of the new fonts on your own printer. o The new fonts are as follows: 67 Goudy 72 Stencil 77 T-bird Cond. 82 Olde Towne No. 536 68 Grotesque No.9 73 Stop 78 Latin Wide 83 News Gothic 69 Hobo 74 Serpentine 79 Murray Hill 84 Raleigh 70 Nevison Casual 75 Thorowgood 80 Park Avenue 85 Romana Demi Bold 71 Playbill 76 Thunderbird 81 Maxima 86 Stymie Items Removed -------------- Some things have been removed due to the changes in the way Calligrapher operates. If any of these things are essential to your needs, you should not upgrade, or you should make sure to save an installed copy of your current Calligrapher. o Bitmap GDOS printer fonts are no longer supported. Only URW outline fonts will be output to your printer. o Sizefont, Editfont, and Assign Edit have been dropped as they are no longer relevant. o The ability to print to disk in PTD format has been removed, along with DiskPrnt. o FlexText no longer runs as a separate program, due to the lack of GDOS/G+Callig support. It must be run as a PAK. Some changes have been made to reduce the amount of memory it consumes. (It can run on a 1 Mb system). Upgrade Procedure ----------------- When you upgrade to Calligrapher 3, you're also entitled to one FREE URW outline font disk (worth $34.95). And since the new version of Calligrapher only works with the URW outline fonts, any additional font families that you purchase along with the upgrade are only $25 (a $10 discount). o The upgrade price from version 2 to version 3 is $45. o The upgrade price from Calligrapher Professional version 2 to Calligrapher Gold version 3 is $100. o The upgrade price (either $45 or $100) includes ONE FREE URW FONT DISK, worth $34.95. Any one of the existing typefaces may be chosen, including the new fonts mentioned above. o The upgrade is available to anyone who owns the Working Title US (CodeHead) version of Calligrapher and has received a registered disk 5 from us. o The upgrade may be purchased by phone or E-Mail by supplying us with a credit card number (including expiration date) and a shipping address. It is not necessary to return your original disks. o The upgrade may also be ordered by mail with a check or money order. o The upgrade includes five disks plus the free font disk and printed documentation for the new additions. o Additional URW font disks may be purchased with the upgrade at the price of $25 each. o Shipping and handling charges for the upgrade are $3 US, $4 Canada, and $6 overseas. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title US, a division of CodeHead Technologies, is the official US importer of Working Title products. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 2 Fri Feb 12, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 22:17 EST John, Thank you for the instructions on how to use Calligrapher's drawing tools. I haven't had time to try them again, but appreciate your effort. I have tried several times to use the INSTALL.PRG on Disk 42, and I get a blinking, square cursor. I seem to be having the same problem as someone else had with it a day or two ago. You told that user he should use INSTALL3.PRG from Disk 2, but it isn't on my Disk 2 or any other. I'm sorry my "user error" caused you a problem on Tuesday night. I thought I had posted a correction soon after posting the problem message, but I just discovered that I slept for about 6 hours between the two messages. The upgrade package was here when I got home from work around 8:30 P.M., and, of course I was eager to try it. I installed it, and then remembered that I had decided not to use Data Diet with any of your programs, so I made a DeskManager setup to cancel Data Diet when I run Cal 3. Unfortunately, I remembered a little too late, so Data Diet had been on during the installation, and some of the Calligrapher files were Dietized, causing a crash when Data Diet was not turned on. Data Diet did what it was supposed to do, it was my error, but I didn't know it. I remembered that some others had had some difficulty with some aspects of installation, so I did what seemed to be the appropriate thing to do. I posted a message about the situation at 23:24 on 930209. After that, I slept about 6 hours, got an idea about what might have been wrong, confirmed it, and posted a correction at 6:36 on 930210, hoping that you hadn't yet read the first message or at least hadn't acted on it. I wish I had posted it at 23:25 on 930209, but I obviously wasn't thinking too clearly at that time of the night, and hadn't a clue. I was just disappointed after the long wait for Cal 3, and hoped I could get it going soon. I suppose I could suggest that you should have waited 24 hours to look at my problem, but that wouldn't be very fair, would it? I'm glad you appreciated that I got back with you as quickly as I did. I normally eat breakfast first thing after I get up at 6 A.M., but on that occasion I was on the computer right after I got up so I could see if I could solve the problem and get on line to let you know as soon as possible. (I even had to forgo a goodbye kiss from my wife, because she figured if the computer was more important than being by the door when she left, I didn't deserve one, although if I had know that that's what it would come to, I wouldn't have given you priority.) Data Diet wasn't responsible for the problems I had when LINE_ARC wasn't in the right position in the AUTO folder and some others, either, so I don't think it's accurate to say that it caused most of the problems I've posted here. That is your perception because you automatically associate that program with me. I can report the same problem someone else reports, but in my case it has to be due to Data Diet. That doesn't sound like support to me. I'm hesitant to ask for help here because I'm liable to get clobbered. I think I'll just become a silent observer here. You and I don't need any more stress, and I don't think the other users appreciate the discussion. This is going nowhere. Let's just forget about the problem with Disk 42, too. I don't need that typeface that bad. Ken Van Dellen ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 3 Sat Feb 13, 1993 CODEHEAD [Charles] at 00:55 EST Ken, Touchy, touchy. It wasn't an exaggeration; several of the problems you've reported lately _have_ had a common cause. I was attempting to gently point out that it might be wise, when you have a problem, to first look at that program you're not supposed to know is there -- you know, the one you've told us we should never mention as a possible cause of problems? I'm sorry you're unhappy with our support; I thought you might have some appreciation for the fact that we look into problem reports almost immediately (when possible). I admit it's slightly frustrating, when doing technical support for our products, to have the same program come up over and over as a cause of problems; and it's slightly more frustrating when people are so attached to this program that they won't even let us mention it. But I hardly think our messages to you warrant such a response. - Charles @ CodeHead Tech Friday, February 12, 1993 9:34 pm ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 4 Sat Feb 13, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 01:06 EST John, sorry I led you slightly astray. I did get the Calligrapher manuals and original disks. Am very aware of the "piracy" aspects of getting only the files on the HD. (You should hear me get on my soap box about that to all the people I know who own DOS clones and get virtually _all_ their software by this method. Then they go buy a cheat book at the store, and are terribly proud of themselves for having found such a good deal!) Would never have asked without the original disks and documentation. Besides, I'm a very happy camper with a number of your products, registered by the way. :-) Not only did I get CAL2 Gold, I got Multi Deluxe, Warp 9, and a couple others I don't remember. (Come to think of it, the Warp 9 copy I got with the TT is a newer version than the one I own. ) I haven't decided what to do with the extra copies yet, but will there be any problems getting registration on these others changed also? When I do decide, will ask as to the exact instruction for each product. Any idea how long you will be offering the upgrade price? Would like to have a chance to get the TT under control (it's only been here 3 days) and get familiar with CAL2 before deciding on the value of the update to me. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 5 Sat Feb 13, 1993 J.MILEWSKI at 13:22 EST WAS as trying to construct a simple work schedule and I find I can only make 4 verticle lines. Is this a limit on the program or is there some way I can override this? Thjan anks John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 6 Sun Feb 14, 1993 MIKE-ALLEN [NM~SysOp] at 00:15 EST Hmmmmm - maybe I'm a little dense, but I am having very little luck getting the Block Start (^B) and Block End (^E) functions to work. As a matter of fact I only made it work once, and I'm not sure how I did it! A friend of mine brought over an RTF file (from Ami Pro) that had an imbeded Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) in it. I figured Callig wouldn't import the Bitmap, but I was kinda hoping that it would at least ignore it. Nope! I ended up with 27 pages of ASCII encoded bitmap and one page of text. I wanted to delete the 27 pages of bitmap. Clicking and dragging throught 27 pages would take a long time so I thought I'd just mark a block start and block end and delete everything in the middle. Absolutely no luck at all. I ended up clicking and dragging a bunch. So, what am I doing wrong? I tried on some other docs (created in callig) and still no luck. HELLLLLLLLLUP! (Mel, are you there?) BTW, I am rather disappointed in the Calligrapher implementation of RTF. Very limited. I do hope that WTUK comes up with a vastly improved Pak in the near future. Mike ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 7 Sun Feb 14, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 01:24 EST Mike, Hmmm...that's an odd one. I've been able to get the Block Start/End commands to work alright here. I tried this in regular Callig docs and RTF imported ones. Also tried a Block Start, jump to end of document, Block End. They all worked. In fact, I've been putting these to use recently when I found the triple clicking, to select a paragraph in Callig 3, required more dexterity than I possess. So I created a Codekeys macro that I can execute with my left hand, after placing the cursor with the mouse in my right hand. I place the cursor in the paragraph I want and then hit Shift-F1 and the paragraph is selected lickety-split for cutting/deleting. The macro uses the Control-B and Control-E functions. Here's the Codekeys macro: Left Shift (move cursor to beginning of paragraph) Right arrow (move cursor to right before the first character) Control B (start block) Right Shift (move cursor to end of paragraph) Control E (end block) The only thing I can think of is either that the DIB bitmap is messing with Callig's internals or some tsr is stealing your Control-B/E keystrokes. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 8 Sun Feb 14, 1993 M.SQUIRE [Mike] at 07:06 EST John, > It just occurred to me that you may have zeroed the bytes in the LAC > on your font disk. Perhaps I was unclear. You should zero out those > bytes on the installed LAC file -- the one in your font folder. I > think if you try again, you'll find that it will work. The LAC file that I zeroed out -was- the one in my \CALFONTS folder on my hard drive and not the one on my Commericial Script fonts diskette. I originally installed this file for Calligrapher 2 using INSTALL.PRG and when I installed Calligrapher 3, I deleted the original installed files off my hard drive and then reinstalled Commericial Script using INSTALL3.PRG. My question remains what can I do next for, as far as I can tell, I've followed your advice to the letter. I -do- have a backup of my entire Calligrapher 2 setup just before I deleted it to reinstall Calligrapher 3 - should I restore a copy of -that- Commericial Script LAC file and zero out the appropriate bytes in accordance with your guidelines? Or would I be better off e-mailing you the present file in use and asking you to modify it for Flexitext use? Or would it be easier for you to e-mail me a modified Commericial Script LAC file which I could then install using INSTALL3.PRG (or just copy into my \CALFONTS folder)? ... Mike Squire ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 9 Sun Feb 14, 1993 M.OSTRANDER1 [Mike O] at 09:27 EST Mike Allen, If this is way below your level of expertise, please don't be insulted. Here's what _I_ did wrong the first time I tried to zero out the appropriate bytes in my .LAC file to make font 42 work with Cal3: zeroed out the wrong bytes. It's been a long time since I worked in hex (haven't been allowed to be a programmer for years), so when I followed John's instruction to "zero out bytes 32 through 36," that's exactly what I did: zeroed out the bytes labeled 32 through 36. The font still worked, but not with FlexText. Then the light went on and I reread John's message, especially the part that said "that's five bytes starting at the 33rd byte." Tried again with a fresh .LAC file and zeroed out the five bytes which my editor labeled "20_1 through 20_5" and I was in business. Now, all my fonts work with FlexText. I am not, however, nostalgic about going back and reading core dumps (does that date me?). - Mike ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 10 Sun Feb 14, 1993 MIKE-ALLEN [NM~SysOp] at 16:31 EST Mel, I figured out what was going on thanks to your timely reply. I still don't think it is right. If the cursor is moved using the keyboard then the ^B ^E sequence works fine. IF, however, the cursor is placed using the mouse, no ^B ^E. I think it's a bug, not a "feature." Mike Mike O, I think you were referring to Mike Squire, not me. I too had to reread John's message before I realized he was talking decimal and not hexadecimal. I cheated - I used Memfil30 and put it into the decimal mode. 8^} (I always assumed that the CodeHeads, being assembly language programmers, even kept their checkbooks in hex.) CORE DUMPS! Goodness that brings back not-too-fond memories. Remeber drum memory? Mike Allen (So many Mikes, so few women!) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 11 Sun Feb 14, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 16:49 EST Ken Van, In order to do all we can to make you happy, I will both E-Mail you the INSTALL3.PRG and send you a new font disk, since you seem to think we would not be willing to replace it if it was damaged by Data Diet. After all, it's my fault that I didn't include INSTALL3.PRG and we can't expect our customers to go to extra steps to install things, even though we try to offer ways that they can get things working without having to wait for a replacement. I can't understand why the original font installer won't work to install the font into your Cal2 setup. You just have to make sure that your C:\ASSIGN.SYS file is Calligrapher's, and that you type in the correct paths for Calligrapher and your fonts. The font installation has always worked correctly in the past. Maybe if you try again, you'll find some part of these instructions that you weren't following. Make sure that neither ASSIGN.SYS nor CAL.PRG are dietized. For future reference, you could have deleted your message by first setting Category 32, then typing "DELETE 32 162". But that wouldn't have changed things because I had already spent some time trying to duplicate your problem. I'm sorry that I made references to Data Diet once again where you are concerned. I've got to simply resign myself to the fact that dealing with these problems is a fact of Atari life now. Our technical support with regard to Data Diet does suffer because I refuse to take the chance of installing it on my system. Perhaps I should devote an entire system to it so that we could test our software and offer warnings about potential problems. But I simply don't have the time required to tinker with it nor the sense of adventure required for its use. We really do appreciate all comments documenting potential problems with the use of Data Diet and our software, but of course it makes us much happier to hear about these problems _after_ they've been solved. Ken Springer, The $45 upgrade price will not expire. As for reregistering our other products, in general, the fee is the same as an update (typically $10) and in the process you will get the latest version. For this reason, it makes sense to wait until you want to update. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 12 Sun Feb 14, 1993 J.WILSON103 [John] at 17:06 EST I need one of the 'pro's' help. Using the 'set paper size' under the 'file drop down', I can attain 1" margins at the top and left sides of the paper. I am close enough on the right margin. The bottom is where I am having my problem. It has now gotten to be an obsession with me. Can anyone direct me on how to change the bottom margin, WITHOUT screwing up the other three? Thanks in advance! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ /\/\/\/\/\/ John S. The numbers I listed were in decimal (I wouldn't use hex without specifying "hex" or "$"). The Cal3 master disks now contain a program called FIX_LAC.PRG which will simply zero out the correct bytes. I will F- Mail the INSTALL3.PRG and FIX_LAC.PRG files to anyone who would like them. I'll start out with Ken Van Dellen, Mike Allen, Mike Ostrander, and Mike Squire. Anyone else who would like these files, please let me know. John Milewski, It appears that 4 vertical lines it the maximum allowable in any one ruler. I don't know of a way around this. Have you tried using the "tables" feature? Mike Allen, That's right. To use the Control-B and Control-E commands to define a block, you must move the cursor with the keyboard, not the mouse. And yes, it is less than convenient, but you may be forgetting another method of setting a block. If you shift-click, it will extend the block to the point upon which you click. This would have made easy work of you major-sized block selection. I just pulled the LAC file into the sector editor and looked at it. Your decimal base was very obvious from your comments and the actual contents of the LAC file. It worked the first time. I appreciate the FMail, but you really didn't have to - my LAC was fixed moments after I downloaded your message. Thanks also on your confirmation of the ^B ^E issue. Now that I understand the limitation, it is no big problem. I'm not sure that I would have twigged to it without Mel's message. I couldn't find any reference to it in the Manual(s). [see, I do RTFM before yelling for help!] As a matter of fact just finding any reference to the ^B ^E in the manual is difficult. The index wasn't too helpful. I'm still playing with the "shift-click" thing - I'm not too comfortable with it yet. I guess we Mikes are just impatient. Thanks for bearing with us and all the help. Mike (Gee, if you use "$" for hex representation, your checkbook MUST be in hex.) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 16 Sun Feb 14, 1993 M.OSTRANDER1 [Mike O] at 20:17 EST Mike Allen, Sorry I got my Mikes mixed -- I, at least, have reason to be more careful. Speaking of marking blocks in Calligrapher (_now_ I've got the right Mike), I've always been a click'n'drag fan, even when it took a long time to scroll to the end of the desired region. It always seemed too IBM'ish to mark starts and ends from the keyboard, so I went out of my way to avoid it. I think the triple click to select a paragraph in Cal3 is a great leap forward. What I'd pay money for is the option to use left and right mouse clicks to select any area; preferably, with subsequent right mouse clicks extending the selected area. Just personal preference, I guess. Drum memory ... yeah, that was interesting, and punched paper tape for recording programs. These weren't state-of-the-art when I was using them 20 years ago, but they worked and it wasn't economically reasonable to upgrade the hardware (specialized military stuff). A really scary memory is my TOS-on- disk 520, before there were any CodeHead helpers to make life as fun as it is now. So, what's going to be in Calligrapher 4? Mike O. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 17 Sun Feb 14, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:18 EST John, Thanks for the update info. Have no idea at the moment what I will be doing with the duplicate copies I got with the TT. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 18 Sun Feb 14, 1993 BHARTSHORNE at 21:29 EST John, I am quite impressed with CAL 3-I printed a 110 page 280K document today and it took less than an hour -hear that pagestream and Calamus? and yes it was in graphic text mode (holland 12 point) Looked terrific! Oh by the way I was using a Deskjet 500C,. I love the features this program offers and the terrific ease with which I can compose a document. I have only a minor complaint and that is the scroll bar and the redraw speed. Now if I could just get Wordup to esport ASCII files Calligrapher would be the only word processor on my hard drive! Thanks for a terrific product! PS I had no problems with installation of either the program or old or new fonts. Bill Hartshorne ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 19 Sun Feb 14, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 21:39 EST John Wilson, To change margins on your documents, you should not change the "Set Paper Size" settings. Here's the concept once again (which is _not_ spelled our very clearly in the manual): 1. Determine the "printable area" of your printer. This can be obtained from your printer manual, or by using PRNTGRID (Cal3 has PRNTGRID as a pak, Cal2 has it as a separate program). 2. Use "Set Paper Size" to enter the printable area into Calligrapher. This is your "physical page" (not necessarily the full size of the piece of paper). This setting is global and will be saved into your CAL.OPT file when you quit the program. You should not alter the paper size unless you change printers or use a different sized paper. 3. Each document you compose has a "virtual page" size. The virtual page size is determined by two things: a. The virtual width of any particular page is equal to the largest (rightmost) right margin on that page. b. The virtual height is determined by "Page Length" in the Customize box. This is saved separately for each document. Ideally, your "virtual page" is a rectangle that surrounds your block of text. Since your virtual page starts on the left at zero inches, you should always leave your leftmost margin setting at "0". This way you have defined the right and left edges of your virtual page by text, not white space. Your "virtual page" must fit _within_ your "physical page", so it should be smaller than (or at most, equal to) your Paper Size settings. Most printers have a printable area about 8.0" x 10.5". This leaves an unprintable margin of .5" around the edges of the paper. You position the virtual page within the physical page by using the alignment settings in the Print/Preview box. It's easy to experiment with how the page will look by using "Preview". You'll see a white rectangle over a gray filled area. This is your "physical page", defined by your "Paper Size" (remember that it's not necessarily the true dimensions of your piece of paper). Within the white rectangle, you'll see a dotted line which contains your text. This is your "virtual page". If you want to center your document, it's an easy matter to select "Centre" for both horizontal and vertical alignment. Note that if your document is less than one page in length, the text itself will not be centered vertically if it doesn't extend to the bottom of your virtual page. Let's assume your printer has a printable area of 8.0 by 10.5 (and you've entered these settings for your "Paper Size"). If you want a one-inch margin on all four edges of the paper, you'll set your right margin at 6.5" and your page length (in the Customize box) at 9.0" (two inches less than the real dimensions of the paper). Then it's just a matter of using "Centre" alignment in both directions to position your text with a one-inch margin. If you want to position your virtual page differently, you can use the offset settings. Let's say you want a 1-inch margin at the top and a 2-inch margin at the bottom. First, make sure to set your "Page length" in the Customize box to 8.0 (3 inches less than the real paper size). Then set "Vert Offset:" to 0.5 (remembering that you've already got a half-inch space at the top before your physical page starts). This will give you a "real" margin of one inch at the top and two inches at the bottom. I hope this is not too complicated to follow. It's a very important concept that should be grasped when using Calligrapher. As I was writing this information once again, it occurred to me that I should compose a sample document that demonstrates the "do"s and "don't"s of page sizing. It might be a great help to all. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 20 Sun Feb 14, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 23:33 EST Mike Allen, Hey, I didn't know about that problem of the positioning the cursor via the mouse and Control B/E. Thanks! I have a little cheat sheet of Callig hotkeys that came with my old package. But you can generate your own by using EDITKEYS.PRG on disk 1 of the Callig 3 master disks. Just run it and point it at Callig (Callig can't be packed or EK won't work) and it will display all the hotkeys for Callig. Now click on Document to save these to disk. Now run this file through one of the numerous file sorters on GEnie and you quickly have an alphabetized list of hotkeys for framing or placement near your screen. :-) You can even go one step further and import this list into Callig, go to Graphic Text, set the text to a small point size so you can fit everything on one screen in 3 columns and save it to disk. Now you can load this document up as a cheat sheet (perhaps as your DEFAULT.CAT) and open another as your working document. A simple Alt-W toggles you back/forth from your working document/cheat sheet. Another avenue would be snapshotting the cheat sheet page to disk as a Degas or Tiny pic and having it load in automatically as a background pic when you boot Callig via Warp 9. The only drawback, though, is that it's harder to check it out since you have to resize or close the current window. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lyre, Thanks for your kind words. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mike O., Yes, I think That's Write does things that way, using various combos of left and right mouse clicks and double clicks to start/end blocks. But I always ended up using the keyboard commands. Shift-clicking will extend an existing block in either direction. I never could seem to get the triple clicking to work half the time, I was either too fast or too slow. :-) So I created a quick Codekeys macro that works every time. Nice since it appears that Callig buffers the keyboard enough that I don't have to add pauses to my CK macro. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bill, Yes, it is a neat program. I'm sure the programmer has heard more than one request for faster screen paging/scrolling. It's #1 on my wish list too. :-) But I gave up on some faster wp's because of Callig's power, compatibility with other prgs and ease of use. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 21 Sun Feb 14, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 23:55 EST Was that a typo or did someone really say that Cal3 can print 110 pages of graphics on a Deskjet 500 in less than an hour???? One that just allows the user to input top, botton right and left. The computer then can do all the calculations based on info from the setup defaults. That way if one wants a 1 inch top, two inch bottom, 3/4" rt and 1/2 left all he has to do is type in the 4 values and print. Yes, you could input a left margin, but if you also input a right margin, Calligrapher would have to negate all functionality of the rulers, eliminating an incredible amount of power in the creation of your documents. Other features also figure in, such as Alternating margins for odd/even, Size%, etc. What you _can_ do, if you want it to work this way, is simply use the "offset" values in your Print/Preview box. This will force the top and left margins to what you want, but you'll have to figure in the unprintable area yourself. Part of the confusion comes into play by the fact that most printers won't print out to the edges of the paper, and it probably would be less confusing for the user if he didn't have to be aware of that fact and the software figured it for him. You'd still have to tell the computer how far from the top and left your printer starts printing, though. I should mention that the user doesn't _have to_ follow these principles either, as long as he's aware of how Calligrapher handles these things. It's perfectly all right to select "US Letter" as your Paper Size and to use "Left" alignment, as long as you understand that you cannot exceed the actual printable size of your printer when you define your right margin and your page length. You can then simply define your left and right margins with the rulers, as long as you understand that the printer drivers thinks that "zero" is the leftmost (or topmost) point that your printer allows you to print. There's a lot of flexibility in page layout and you can use as much of it or as little of it as you want. But if you want to avoid extra line feeds and strange printouts, it's imperative that you understand the concepts of virtual and physical pages. That's why we try to explain these concepts when users report strange results. Lorne ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 45 Thu Feb 18, 1993 R.BROTHERHO1 [Rog] at 00:43 EST I just have a quick question regarding the screen fonts in Calligrapher3. I downloaded the demo, and on looking it over I thought the screen fonts were VERY difficult to look at, compared to, say those of WordUp (sorry). I don't mean to be insulting - obviously the program is incredibly powerful, and attractive to me. I've been looking for a replacement for WordUp for a long time. I'm just wondering if this is a problem with the demo only. I have a 14" hi rez mono monitor. I tried the 24 pin font demo, and the output from my printer is fantastic. It just seems it might be difficult to look at the screen for any length of time. I'd appreciate some feedback on this - had anyone else felt this to be true. Thanks, Rog. By the way, the larger fonts (14 pt.) were more difficult to look at. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 46 Thu Feb 18, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 15:27 EST Rog, Calligrapher's screen fonts are typically a bit smaller than the equivalent point sizes in other word processors. This provides a more true "real" point size (try comparing the size of 12pt text from a printout with 12pt text on the screen). It's a true WYSIWYG display. When Calligrapher finds a GDOS bitmap font for the size selected, it will use it, otherwise the font will be built from the outline font engine. There is no GDOS bitmap font included with Calligrapher for 14pt text. That's why the 14pt text display suffers. Calligrapher doesn't use "hinting" (a process used in DTP which helps in the generation of small resolution outline fonts), which is required by any computer generation of bitmap fonts if you want good looking fonts at small sizes. Instead, it uses GDOS fonts in the more popular sizes to achieve good looking screen fonts. The use of a GDOS 14pt font will solve this problem for anyone who finds the frequent need for a 14pt size. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 47 Thu Feb 18, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 16:19 EST Rog, 14 point and other vector sizes will also look better if you have 2 megs of ram free for Callig to display the vector fonts, otherwise they don't look as nice, but rest assured, as you've noticed, the output is top-notch. If you have less than 2 megs of free ram, try the "Full Scale" option under the "Format" menu bar. It makes the vector fonts look a little better, for those with less ram. Hope this helps. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 48 Thu Feb 18, 1993 M.SQUIRE [Mike] at 18:04 EST Lorne, I've also enjoyed good results with moving documents back and forth between Microsoft Word for Windows (v2.0a) for the IBM PC and Calligrapher 3 using the new RTF Import/Export PAC. The only area in which I've seen a problem is that the Calligrapher 3 PAC tends to add an extra character at the very beginning of each page after the 1st page. If the first word is underlined and bold, the RTF PAC adds a capital H (e.g., HWork Experience, HReferences). If the first word is regular text, the RTF PAC adds a capital F. I've done this test with 2 documents, a resume for my son and a file containing the minutes of an RTC held in one of the GEnie Roundtables and both exhibit this problem. The work I had to do to remove these extra characters, though, was a tiny effort in comparison to the reformatting work I would have had to have done without the RTF PAC. Mike Squire ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 49 Thu Feb 18, 1993 M.EVERHART2 [MIDIMIKE] at 20:09 EST Good point, John E. After considerable fussing around trying to get one setup for graphics and text-only printing, I found that having the printer feed 1" down from the top of the page and then using a vertical offset of zero and a horizontal offset of 1" enables one page size and print setup for both. I still have not been able to avoid the 'double page feed problem' noted by another here on-line. Whenever I am printing in single page-feed mode, there is a final formfeed after the page has printed. This requires running a spare piece of paper through the printer after each page printed. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 50 Thu Feb 18, 1993 L.BUDNICK [Lorne] at 22:04 EST Mike, I have noticed the same thing regarding the extra characters being inserted. I will certainly agree that the entire process of porting documents between the two WP's using the RTF PAC has significantly reduced the effort required. I am quite pleased. I have a 4meg STe, so free RAM should not be a problem (my question was concerning the screen font display). As far as John's suggestion regarding using G-dos fonts is concerned, would I take a 14 point G-dos font from another program and install it in Calligrapher somehow? By the way, I'm using G+ Plus. I should probably remind you that my question was concerning the "fuzzy" quality of the display of certain screen font point sizes. Thanks, Rog. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 52 Fri Feb 19, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:33 EST Rog, Right, the reason why I mentioned the ram situation is because if you don't have 2 megs available, it will affect the appearance of the screen fonts. But since low ram just causes the screen fonts to appear thinner, with less weight (you can try this by installing a large ramdisk and then booting the program), I'm sure the 'fuzzy' quality you mention is just the way the font appears. (BTW, with 2 megs, the Quick/Full Scale options have no effect. They only apply for those with less than 2 megs.) The larger point sizes look great. What I normally do when I need graphic output is just do all of my editing in Text mode and then switch to Graphic text mode for final font sizing, hyphenation, etc.. You can use Control plus a letter, but remember that this Control+letter combination will take precedence over any Calligrapher keyboard command already given the same assignment. If you remember, we had a phone conversation a while back about the printer problems I was having. Well I'm having them again because I reinstalled everything. The fix before was related to changing something in the assign.sys file, either erasing "dummy.fnt" or everything before it or after it or something I can't remember. When it worked, I would command the program to print and it would show the display "Building printer fonts" and then print on its merry way. Now, because I screwed up the fix, when I want to print is displays "Insert printer driver disk. (this may be caused by lack of memory)." I hope you can remember what you told me to do before and repeat it to me. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 57 Sun Feb 21, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 19:29 EST Flakes, Yes, I remember what I told you to fix your printer problem. I told you to free up some space on your hard drive. Calligrapher uses a disk cache to create its bitmap fonts. If you don't have enough free space on your drive, it comes up with that message. The cache size is determined by the settings in your LINE_ARC program. I strongly recommend updating to Calligrapher 3. It has none of the "GDOS" installation problems of past versions. Bill Hartshorne ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 59 Mon Feb 22, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 01:42 EST I agree with you on the font seeming to be too small as compared to the actual laser output. The screen fonts seem to be a little out of proprotion to output so it is not quite a WYSIWYG, I don't mind this minor problem as the program has so many strong points that out weigh the negatives. Sorry I just read the next massage and I guess it is a true WYSIWYG display. I guess after using WFII or WORD up it may seem that way. I wonder if if Calligrapher will swith to support the Speed-o-gdos fonts supplied with the Falcon?? No biggie as I am doing fine with the supplied fonts. I think the HP-laser printer driver could be tweeked a bit. The prints are very good but do not seem to be as crisp as the output from WFII(Buggy FSM- Gdos) or pagestream. Has anyone else noticed a difference? Mel, How can I tell if it is using the vector fonts?? I have a mega STe/4 with 2.8 free memory and the 14pt still look choppy. Also does anyone know the name of the file that the printer code setup gets saved to?? When I installed version 3.0 I noticed that I lost all the printer codes I typed in. Mike, I have also had the double line-feed syndrome. Try setting the print option to print from page 1 to 1 instead of 1 to 999. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 60 Mon Feb 22, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:34 EST Bob, As I mentioned, just create a big ramdisk that assures you don't have 2 meg free and then boot Callig. If the fonts look the same as they did before, then you're not looking at the vector fonts. (You might also want to temporarily enable more free ram than 2.8 megs, just to be sure that you have enough when booting Callig.) Well, you are, but they don't look as good as they could. I noticed that upon installing Callig 3 that I wasn't getting the vector fonts displayed onscreen although nothing else had changed in my system ramwise. (I even freed up more ram, as suggested above.) So I used the CALSETUP.PRG to alter the amount of minimum/maximum memory grabbed, the last two fields down at the bottom. I think they came with a default of 512k and 8192k. I set them to 512k and 2048k and now I could see the vector fonts in all their glory. :-) Otherwise, if you have low ram, they appear thinner with less "weight" or body to them, kind of like they're on a diet. :-) This is not a bug, just Callig's way of accomodating users with lower memory allowances. And as mentioned, no matter how they appear, the printouts are top notch. The printer codes are in the CAL.OPT file. I had that happen to me too, when upgrading to a newer version of Callig in the past, so this time I saved my old .opt file and copied it back into my CAL directory and everything was hunky-dorey with my printer codes intact. Hope this helps. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 61 Mon Feb 22, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 15:52 EST John, No, that wasn't it. I've plenty of space left on the HD. The problem was related to the font building process. What you told me was to change the assign.sys file in some way so that the program would build fonts every time it printed instead of using the installed fonts. This involved something to do with the dummy.fnt thing. The closest I recall is that you told me to delete some lines in the assign.sys file, but I can't remember which one. It was working before. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 62 Mon Feb 22, 1993 J.DUFFIN [JAYDEE] at 19:20 EST I have Calligrapher 3 Gold, and so far like it very much. Two problems have arisen however. 1) I cannot see text that I place in a graphic area, until it is actually pasted in. How do I see the text before placing it? 2) Lines containing subscripts and superscripts have an extra spacing between lines, even when double spacing is used. The appearence is unsightly. How can I obtain the same line spacing between lines with and without sub- super- scripts? James Duffin ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 63 Mon Feb 22, 1993 WWD at 20:48 EST For those of you with postscript printers, the upgrade to CAL 3 is well worth it just for the improved printer driver. The old postscript driver worked well enough, but it didn't handle justified text right, somehow messed up the printing of helvitica docs, wouldn't print the outline from the outliner, and didn't box text properly. There were adequate work-arounds for all of these problems, but the new driver does all of these things correctly. Thanks for a nice upgrade. Bill Destler ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 64 Mon Feb 22, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 20:49 EST James, Those are two limitations one has to deal with in Callig. It's more a word processor than a dtp, but it does throw in some very handy dtp features. For what you are doing, a dedicated graphics or dtp program would produce better results. Text placed in a graphic area is only visible after it's pasted. But you can "preview" it, in a sense, by placing the desired text right beneath the graphic area to see if it will fit therein. Once you have it in the desired location, copy it to the clipboard, then place the pointer at the desired vertical axis above the text, in the graphic area, and as close as you can get it above the first letter. Yes, that's the way sub/super scripts are handled. You can lessen the effect of this added space between the lines before/after the sub/super scripted text by either reducing the point size of the sub/super script text or by putting a ruler before/after the sub/super script line with a smaller line spacing than the rest of your document. For example, picture a document with a ruler at the beginning for double spaced text, then a single space ruler, a line containing superscript text, then a double space ruler to return to double spaced text. By placing a single space ruler before the sub/super scripted text, you can minimize the extra line spacing before/after this sort of text. You can also use the Custom Spacing feature in the rulers to possibly further minimize the extra spacing that comes with sub/super script text. Say, if the 1-to-2 ratio mentioned above wasn't cutting it, you could go with a ratio of 1-to-3, or whatever, since this feature allows you to specify a range of 1-13 extra points between lines. These workarounds can't compare to the tools that Calamus or Pagestream offer, yet Callig does offer a long list of power wp features with a good sprinkling of dtp options. I would love to see line spacing by .1 increments and easier to use graphic tools in Callig, but the wealth of other features makes up grandly. Hope this helps. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 65 Mon Feb 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 21:19 EST Bob Jones, As I mentioned before, 14pt screen fonts will not look very good if you don't have a 14pt GDOS bitmap font. This is because Calligrapher does not use hinting to help generate its screen fonts in low resolutions. The higher the resolution, the better your fonts will look when built by the outline font engine. This is a fact of life with all DTP work, not just a Calligrapher problem. If you're using Calligrapher on a color monitor, you might want to consider investing in a mono monitor and you'll instantly have twice the resolution. To determine if your screen fonts are "vector" fonts, try sizing some text to a large size without a "pt" after it (like 90pt). If it looks relatively smooth, you're getting "vector" fonts. Otherwise, it will be very blocky looking. This may solve your problem, but the presence of the file placed there is not a problem unless you've done something to change your setup. An unaltered setup after running INSTALL.PRG will work just fine. It is user or program intervention that causes problems. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 67 Tue Feb 23, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 00:41 EST As to super and sub scripts, I think having the extra space appear between lines should be considered an unacceptable situation for any ST word processor. I have old Atari 800 word processors that would do super and sub scripts and not add the extra line spacing. This is especially true on top of the line processors. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 68 Tue Feb 23, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 01:22 EST Thanks Mel, I'll give it a whirl! Too bad I didn't save the cal.opt file as if took a long time to get all the codes in for all the greek characters of my Oki-400. Oh well thats computing. I wish Calligrapher offered a longer input line so I could use codes for super and subscript for oki-400 internal fonts. The codes I have to input are about 10 characters to long for the current input fields. No biggie as I only use the text option for quick draft prints, but it would be a nice addition in future versions. John, Sorry if I'm harping on the 14pt fonts, I'm not. I read a message form another user about vector fonts, and I wondered if I was was actually taking advantage of that feature. He stated that he had to run the cal setup program to alter the min & max amount of ram grabbed at startup. I'll never look at or mention the 14pt font scaling again, and I did not bring it up this time. I fully appreciated your first explanation on the scaling, and I have had a monochrome monitor for 8 years now, there must be some other Bob Jones using color and Calligrapher not this one. The sound of your message gave me the indication of "Whens this guy gonna learn that facts of font scaling? Quit beating it Luke!" The last one is from the Movie "Cool Hand Luke". I must have uploaded a duplicate message or something, I don't remember asking that one again. Anyway, I think the fonts are fine in Calligrapher and the program is what I have been looking for in a WP on the ST for many years. Also appreciate all the online time you spend answering questions, I know how Geni bills add up. If I may ask, what current projects are planned from codehead? Are you busy with IBM, MAC or upgrading current products to meet falcon and multitos criteria? I hope you will come out with more software written in house for the ST, I know the PC's and MACS need a Codehead injection to get them up to speed, I hope you still have time to dable in new atari projects. In the system font Text Only mode, sub/super scripted text is handled like most other system font wp's, the sub/super scripted text is simply reduced in size to the tiny system font, with no extra spacing between lines onscreen or in one's printout. So in Text Only mode, Callig is the same as other wp's out there in handling sub/super scripted text, whereas WordWriter, First Word Plus, WordPerfect, Protext and some others don't have a Graphic Text mode with scaleable fonts to try their hand at sub/super scripted text. Just a thought. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 71 Tue Feb 23, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 03:17 EST There seems to be quite a misunderstanding here about Calligrapher's superscript and subscript usage. When these attributes are used, the text is shifted up (for superscript) or down (for subscripts) IF that's all you do. To truly use them correctly, you also need to decrease the point size (by approximately a third). For instance, if you've got 12pt text, you can create a very nice superscript by setting the point size to 8 points. This will NOT INCREASE YOUR LINE SPACING. It could be argued that you shouldn't have to take the extra step to produce the superscript that you are trying to get. But it could also be argued that by dividing this process into two steps, you have more potential power because it allows you to adjust the point size to whatever size you wish and there may even be times that you actually want the text to be the same point size but shifted up. If you examine the spacing of your text, you'll realize that if you shift the text up to superscript without decreasing the size, extra line spacing is required in order to keep from running into the text in the line above. So far, I haven't found a need for using either superscript or subscript, so it's hard to offer a solution to all potential problems here. If someone can give me a specific example of the use of these tools that cannot be solved by following the above advice, I'll be happy to try to work with you toward a solution. But if the reason for the complaints has been simply because the feature exists and you don't even want to use it anyway, maybe I don't need to consider it a priority. If you don't have the 2 megs of ram for Callig to display the vectors, the Quick and Full scale options now apply (otherwise they have no effect). Full scale calculates the height and width of the characters, while Quick scale only calculates the height. Full looks better, but redraws slightly (very slightly) slower, having more weight to the characters. I'm surprised noone else can see this since I can reproduce it regularly if I boot Callig with under 2 megs of ram. Note that subscript usage will always cause extra line spacing, even if you decrease the point size. But you can just decrease the point size without selecting subscript if you want that effect. Another suggestion for the frequent use of something like the small "o" for degrees, is to create it once and capture it as an abbreviation. Once it's included in your set of abbreviations you can reproduce it in two keypresses ("o" Control-A). Note that it will always appear in its original typeface and point size, though. I've been using abbreviations more and more lately and find them to be very powerful. I have abbreviations for letterhead, FAX cover sheet, outline bullets (!!), umlaut-o, and some assorted graphics. I've also recommended abbreviations as a solution to several other problems folks have had. For instance, some people have asked about other math symbols that are missing from the font, or other types of unusual characters that might be needed. Some of these things could be replaced by designing a bit image and saving it as an abbreviation. As a reminder to those who don't want to bother to crack the manual, I'll recap the process. Simply select a block (including any combination of text, rulers, graphics, etc.) and save it to the clipboard (Alt-C). Select "Abbreviations" from the menu, type in a name, and select "Add Clipboard" (or hit Return). You can use an abbreviation by typing its name and Control-A. Note that you must have a space before the name (or CR) and nothing after it (or a space). I can just type "fax" and Control-A, and my entire FAX cover sheet appears, complete with different typefaces, sizes, and a graphic (even a signature). Abbreviations are saved "globally" so you always have your entire set available in any document. (They won't be saved until you exit the program so don't power down without exiting.) I high light the labels square for labels, set the print for 30 as per the number of labels on the sheet. Then click on O.K. and the labels format comes up on the screen. I set the measurements as requested and then go to O.K. The printer, a BJ-200 is set up right as I have no problem with regular letters. What I get is one label printed on a sheet and then the program askes for another sheet of labels. I even tried the settings for the metric values for the label size but to no avail. And "screen(ing of) vector fonts" is selected using the new CalSetUp program. So your conversions made me try it, and my "opinions" are: 1) Using bitmapped (non-vector) fonts is definitely faster. 2) Quick scale is fastest and doesn't look half bad, particularily at the smaller point sizes. 3) Those who don't mind a little blockiness... the bit mapped fonts don't appear to have the dropouts that folks don't seem to like with the vector fonts. Let me know what your settings are under Quantity, Size, Offset and Separation. I noticed you said there were 30 labels to a sheet. How big is each sheet of labels (width x height in inches) and how big is each individual label (ditto)? It sounds like you're going through the process correctly, but the problem is probably in your numbers that are plugged into the above variables. This bit me for awhile also, until I figured out what was going on. In the meantime, here are a few excerpts from messages I've post before about the Label pak. If they seem unrelated, keep in mind that they're random posts from the past 6 months or so to other users. Labels.cpk isn't supposed to show up in the Open Pak listing of available paks. You design your label onscreen and then go to the Print section of Calligrapher. Page 14 of the Gold extension manual then leads you through the required steps. Hmmm...I don't know what to say about Print Grid crashing. I just ran it the other day for the first time and it worked great, popping out a grid to show the printable extent of my printer. It is intended to make aligning of label sheets easier by printing a grid over a sheet of 'em so you can take measurements off of it when you use the Labeler pak. I used the inches and tenths setting. Must be a tsr/acc conflict perhaps. To add to what the others said, the Labeler only works in Graphics Text mode, not Text Only. So you would be dealing with the bitmap/vector fonts (which start at a tiny 6 points). - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 84 Wed Feb 24, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 22:59 EST Gordon, Thanks for the tip about the book. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 86 Thu Feb 25, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 20:15 EST Other tips about labels: Note that your label .CAL file should contain only the information for one label. It may actually be positioned anywhere on the page. The label pak will center the label within each label block as defined by the dimensions in the label dialog box. The alignment settings in the Print box are ignored. This centering is done by using a rectangle that encloses the block of graphics/text defining the label. If you're printing a simple address label, this shouldn't be difficult. Basically, the label printer sees your label as a "page" and it takes that page and tiles it upon your physical paper in the manner described in the labels dialog box. Here's an example where I printed: CodeHead Technologies P.O. Box 74090 Los Angeles, CA 90004 In 14pt Holland font, this text is less than 2 inches wide and about 5/8" tall. It will fit well within a 2-1/2 by 1 inch label. To print it on a page of labels this size that are 3 across and 10 down, I went to the Print box, selected "Print Labels", "Nos Copies :30", and "OK". (My left margin is zero, right margin 7", and page length is 9.8) The Labels box appeared and I entered: Quantity Columns:3 Rows:10 Size (") Width:2.5 Height:1 Offset (") Across:0 Down:0 Separation (") Across:0.25 Down:0 This printed a perfectly aligned page of 30 labels. Note that my printer has a built-in 1/4" margin at the top and left due to the printable area that has been discussed at length here. This makes my "0" offset settings in the label box shift the page just right for the label pages I have which start about a 1/4 inch down and left. Your settings may vary and you might try a few test pages on scratch paper to get your settings right. Note also that there is some kind of floating point calculation that causing hundredths of inches to be rounded down in the label box. I think it's due to the fact that internal calculations are done in millimeters. This causes a setting of .25 to reappear as .24 next time the Labels box is opened (the label pak saves your last settings, with this minor discrepancy). As a little test, I just tried maxxing out the label printer. Since the maximum in the number of copies is 999, I chose 980 and tried to print 20 across and 49 down with a very small piece of text. My TT chugged through the first 200 copies very quickly, but then started counting at a snail's pace. I aborted and retried with 200, with 10 across and 20 down (.5 width and .5 height). This printed out nicely with 200 copies on a page. I hope the solution to your problem is within this message. Today I had to give a case presentation on Ocular Histoplasmosis. I needed to make 8 copies of a 4 page handout. I set Calligrapher to print 4 copies of the document and left the room for some coffee. I returned about 10 minutes later and it was only on page 2 copy 3, this seemed very slow in comparison to Pagestream multiple prints I had done in the past. I found the slowdown not to be related to the speed of data transmission but in the logic the program uses when printing multiple copies of the same page. For example: To print 8 copies of a 4 page document Calligrapher method: TIME Send page 1 copy 1 ====> Laser prints page 1 1 min Re-send page 1 copy 2 ==> " " " 1 1 Min " " 1 3 1 min 1 4 1 min ----------------- --------------------------------------------- Total time for 4 copies of page 1 = 4 min --------------------- Total time for 8 copies of = 16 min a 4 page document. Pagestream driver: Print page 1 copy 1 ===> Laser prints page 1 1 min No resend needed as laser can print remaining 45 sec copies from internal image at full speed of the laser. In my case thats 4 ppm. ------------------------------- ------------------------------- total time to print 8 copies of page 1 is 1 min 45 sec Total time for 8 copies of 4 p doc is: 7 minutes Thats over twice as slow, it seems it would be a easy patch to allow the current driver to send one image per page and set the printers internal copy counter to the desired number. It may be a limitation of Gdos because Wordflair II prints the same way. I tried sending 1 page from Calligrapher to the printer manually set for 4 copies, the printer still printed only one copy. Is there something I overlooked? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 89 Fri Feb 26, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 01:47 EST John and Tomas- Thanks for all the time you spent on the phone with me today trying to work through my outliner printing problem. Maybe a file got corrupted somehow. After getting nowhere at work today I resorted to Mac Wordperfect's outliner. I quickly discovered that Calligrapher's Outliner is MUCH nicer! Mac WordPerfect 2.1 has no graphic equivalent to Calligs outline boxes. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 90 Fri Feb 26, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 01:55 EST Bob, Yes, that may be a limitation in the print routine or the gdos driver. An unrelated point is that you can use the Collate function to print pages 1- 4, 1-4, 1-4, etc., although the manual warns that this should increase the time for the print run. A good spooler might speed your printing appreciably or using the Codehead Ramdisk's ability to spool a page(s) to a disk file, then print this, specifying the number of copies. Of course, a 4-page doc will take up a fair amount of ram. In order to save spooled data to disk, you will need to have a big enough spooler configured to capture the entire document. The Codehead Ramdisk is part of Codehead Utilities Release 4. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 91 Fri Feb 26, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 09:27 EST Lorne, We'll be happy to replace your disk if you want. However, it sounds like it might be almost readable. If you can achieve a good copying of CAL.PRG by any means (copy it from drive B, or another machine), you can place it on your hard drive. The only thing the INSTALL program (on disk 5) does is copy CAL.PRG and copy the settings from your previous CAL.PRG. So if you can get a decent copy of it, you only need to run CALSETUP.PRG on it to set the path, etc. Let me know if you have success with this, or if we should send a replacement. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 92 Fri Feb 26, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 10:57 EST Bob Jones, As you surmised, the intelligence for printing multiple pages is within the printer drivers, not the program. GEM does not have a system call to tell a GDOS driver to print multiple copies of a page. We don't have the source code for any GDOS printer drivers or it would be possible to insert a mechanism to provide this function. Depending on the amount of RAM in your computer, such a function would allow the driver to construct the page in memory once, and simply send it to the printer over and over. Or in the case, of some printers, it might be possible to send it to the printer once, and tell it to do multiple copies from its own retained image of the page. The latter would definitely be the fastest possible way to do multiple pages. (This is the way Calamus does output to the SLM Laser printers [kind of -- actually the image stays in RAM]). The next best solution is what Mel mentioned, to print the page once into the CodeHead RAM disk's spooler, save it to disk, and print it multiple times (up to 999) to your printer. Then the pages will be reprinted as fast as your printer can take the data. As for your manual attempts, I'm not sure. Perhaps the printer driver tells the printer to send only one copy (sheesh). I haven't tried this (with my HP- compatible Epson Action Laser) with Calligrapher. There is a printer command (EXC&l#X) to set "number of copies", which you could send with MaxiFile (or some other utility) but it may be cancelled by the driver. I may test this and get back to you on the results. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 93 Sat Feb 27, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 03:35 EST I did some digging into the problem of printing multiple copies with the HPL300.SYS driver. As Bob Jones noticed, setting the printer to do multiple copies does no good. This is because the driver begins its printout with a number of initialization commands, one of which sets it back to one copy per page. :-( So... I did a bit of hacking. I found the spot in the driver where it sets the number "1" into the command. I then made a copy of HPL300.SYS, called it HPL300_2.SYS, and changed the number to 2. Using this driver caused two copies of each page to be printed, with only one copy of the data being sent to the printer! Do this patch at your OWN RISK! In a copy of the file HPL300.SYS (the one that comes with Cal 3 and is 51541 bytes long), search for the hex string: 01 00 00 BA 6A You should find it at offset $A7FB into the file. You can change the "01" to whatever number of copies you'd like to print. Remember that it is a hex number if you're using a number larger than 9 (10=$A, etc.). I don't know exactly what the limit is but I believe that it would be at most, 255 ($FF). Also remember that you should just leave the number of copies set to "1" in the Calligrapher Print dialog box. You can install this as an alternate driver using CalSetup. I admit that something else should be done to facilitate this feature in an easier way and for more printer drivers, but this at least provides a way to get fast multiple copies. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 94 Sat Feb 27, 1993 J.MILEWSKI at 11:19 EST Mel & John Thanks for the tips. I am still having trouble. I'm using the Avery labels number 5160. The sheet size is 8.5 by 11.0. Normal U.S. sheet size. I design my label, 3 lines, go into print click on labels, insert 30 then O.K. The labels box comes up and I enter the following. Quanity Columns:3 Rows:10 Size(") Width:2.5 Height:1.0 Offset (") Across:.25 Down:.50 Seperation(") Across:.12 Down:.0 This is about the same as the example as the one John posted here in reply to my question. In fact I tried John's set up on a plain piece of paper and I got the same problem as I have always got. rinted one label and then asked for the next sheet of paper. John mentioned his page size "(My left margin is zero, right margin7", and page length is 9.8). This confuses me a bit. U.S. paper size is 8.5 by 11.0. Am I missing something here? My left margin comes up (default) 0 and the right margin comes up at 7.5. I dont know if setting things up metric would help but I've got something stareing me in the face and I just can't see it. Duane ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 97 Sat Feb 27, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 14:03 EST John Milewski, What are your settings for "Set Paper Size"? They should be in the vicinity of "Other: Width:8.0 Height:10.5". What kind of printer are you using? The 9.8 page length is found in the Customize box. If you have not yet heard my dissertation on physical & virtual page lengths, I suggest you read message 195 from February 14th. I see by the message numbers that that message must already be in the archives. (Perhaps it is still here but has a different number). I've posted that long tutorial so many times that I'd rather not burden everyone with it once again. Your problem could be caused by incorrect page/paper size settings, since the label printer will try to create a page sized according to the dimensions you've entered. Why are you using .25" and .50" for the Offset values? Have you tried with zeroes there? Is it really 2-5/8" (2.5" + .12") between labels horizontally on your label sheets? Why don't you try some other things like 2 columns and 5 rows to see if you 3x10 settings were maybe extending beyond the page? Remember to do all this testing on scratch paper. Once you get it right, you can print on your labels. If you haven't been following this topic regularly, it will probably be worth your while to read the rest of the messages in the archives anyway, since there is a constant flow of good information emanating from this topic. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 98 Sat Feb 27, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 15:59 EST Lorne, Great. The saves us both some time. Duane, During the first part of the print process, a message is displayed: "Building Printer Fonts". As the printer fonts are built, they are stored in your disk cache. The size of your cache is set in the CalSetup program. If Calligrapher finds the "built" fonts it needs are already in the cache, this part of the process is much faster. This means that the second time you print the same document (or another document using the same typefaces and point sizes), this part of the print procedure will be faster, i.e. printing the second time is faster than the first. After the fonts are built, the page is constructed in memory. The speed at which this is done is dependent on your CPU speed and type. A TT will be much faster than an 8MHz 68000. After the page has been constructed, it is sent to the printer driver. The speed of the printer driver varies between various printers. It will be limited by the speed at which your printer can accept the data. The best way to speed up the printing of a page which you will need to print repeatedly is to use the CodeRam spooler to save the raw image to disk. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 99 Sat Feb 27, 1993 M.EVERHART2 [MIDIMIKE] at 17:46 EST D.CHARTER - my frustration also. Print speed is more a result of the printer than the program. I have a 24pin dot matrix printer. The best speed is the one with the least density - 180dpi. Speed is also enhanced DRAMATICALLY by using text only mode. I use this to check draft or submit draft for proofs. Cal 3 is faster than Cal 2. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 100 Sun Feb 28, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 00:35 EST John E., I've included your excellent "Set Paper Size Primer" in this month's issue of GEnieLamp ST. I'll experiment with the spooler option. I wonder why the programmer of the print driver did not take that into account? With so many HP printers being used today you would think they would have exploited the printers built in capabilities. I see you've gone crazy on the screen savers lately, I'm eating my words about the slow speed issue. The new ones are super fast, flying shapes is great! best one yet, good show. Bob Jones...... John, Just read your second message, man that was fast on the fix. That's good news and probably something for a future update in Calligrapher. I'll take the risk, and appreciate the help, you saved me hours of time trying to find a solution. Bob..... Update: This must be my lucky day, I fixed a 2 week old bug in one of my GFA programs and I found a great fix for the HP multi page printing routine. As you suggested I edited the Hex string 01 00 00 BA 6A in the hp300.sys, but instead of setting the 01 value to a higher number I set it to 00. I then manually set my laser to print 2 copies and set calligrapher for 1 copy. I printed and out popped 2 pages having only sent one copie from calligrapher. It appears that 0 copies is a invalid number, either the printer ignores it or the driver does not send it, in either case the internal printer settings remain intact. Now I'm riding the gravy train with biscuit wheels!!! ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 103 Sun Feb 28, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 15:13 EST Bob Jones, That's great. This problem exists with the Grid Print and every other thing I try to print. I am not able to get the virtual page to either move to the top or to centre toward the top. I was attempting to print some labels that are 2.625" wide and 1" high. This was a 3 across by 10 down Avery 5260 8.5 by 11 page. The following is the page settings I have been working with. Paper size: Width = 8.0" Height = 10.5" Customize Page length setting = 10" Vertical / Horizontal Align Centre Centre or Top Offset=0 Offset=0 All the labels print just fine, but the top margin is too large resulting in each label being too far down on the page to match the 5260 label layout. I have experimented with Vertical align set to top and to centre, but the top margin remains the same. When viewing the print preview the virtual alignment looks fine. This appears to be a problem with the printer driver. The results are the same with the deskjet500 and the deskjet printer driver. Does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening? Has anyone printed this type of label using the DJ500? If so, what printer setup did you use? Any help in this regard will be appreciated. Yes, I have read the docs over and over along with John's message 195. BTW, I am using Cal Gold Ver. 3. Thanks in advance, Lorne.... ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 106 Sun Feb 28, 1993 M.OSTRANDER1 [Mike O] at 21:27 EST Lorne, I hadn't tried the LABEL.CPK before, but I was inspired by this ongoing topic. I'm using Cal3 Gold on a MEGA 4 (TOS 1.02) with a DJ500 and the DESKJET5.SYS driver which came with Cal3. I set my page/paper settings as you specified: Paper size: Width = 8.0" Height = 10.5" Customize Page length setting = 10" Vertical / Horizontal Align Centre Centre I'm using the same Avery 5260 labels. I typed a 3-line address in my .CAL document and asked for 30 copies from the PRINT (LABELS) dialog. In the LABELS dialog, besides specifying 2.625x1 for the labels, I set: OFFSET (") Across: 0 Down: 0.35 (for 3-line address labels) SEPARATION (") Across: 0.125 Down: 0 This gave me a page of labels that look centered just fine (to my eyeballs) on the 30 labels. I guess (haven't tried it) that I would have to set the 0.35 Down OFFSET to a smaller value, if I were using 4-line addresses. I hope this information helps.... - Mike ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 107 Sun Feb 28, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 22:08 EST Lorne, You mentioned that your problem also exists with Print Grid. What you don't realize is that Print Grid is telling exactly where your printer can print. It's giving you the _answer_ to your problem, not causing it. The purpose of Print Grid is to fill a page with as much graphics as your printer will allow. It gives you an exact visual representation of the "printable area" of your printer. Your printer manual may also document this. After using Print Grid, you'll be able to determine the top and left offsets between the corner of your paper and the upper left corner of your "physical page". This is "0" as far as Calligrapher is concerned since your printer is incapable of printing above it. If you've chosen 10ths of inches for your grid, you'll also be able to determine the width and height of the "printable area" of your printer. These are the values you should enter into the "Set Paper Size" dialog (not US Letter). As I mentioned before, the label printer will ignore the alignment settings of the Print box. The label printer dialog box has its own alignment values (Offset -- Across / Down). If your labels are still too far down the page with a setting of "0" for "Down", then the only way you'll be able to achieve success is by starting with the second row and setting your "Down" offset appropriately (although I don't think this will be necessary once you grasp the concept). John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 108 Mon Mar 01, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:51 EST In solving a tech support problem, I discovered that the 24-pin driver (NB15.SYS), or at least our 24-pin printer (Epson L-1000) and the 24-pin Panasonic used by the customer with the problem, required an even lower paper height setting than we've been recommending around here. If your 24-pin printer is having problems with an extra line feed or an extra page feed after a page, set your paper size to 8.0 by 10.2. In general, we recommend 8.0 by 10.5 for the paper size of most printers, but after running Print Grid on the 24-pin, I discovered that our L-1000 will only print 10.2 inches vertically. Of course, as we've advised before, you should run Print Grid on your own printer to determine the exact settings, no matter what printer you have. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 109 Tue Mar 02, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 02:25 EST John, No it was not one of your modules, I know you codehead boys feel the need for speed, and it shows in all of your programs. It was written by another fellow, I won't mention which one now because I originally thought that it was a limitation in EOS. I now understand it's up to the programmer of the EOS module as to how fast it can go. The ones from you really impress me. I stumbled opon the code you used for the flying shades mod. it was in one of my GFA subroutines folder, looked very similar to the EOS version. Was that originally a GFA sub. that you modified? Just curious as GFA is the only language I use and maybe when I get some time will have a go at my own EOS mod. It will probably be one of the slow ones. That way I can flame my own work here on Geni!!! bob.. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 110 Tue Mar 02, 1993 L.BUDNICK [Lorne] at 21:55 EST Mike O, Thanks for the info. It sounds as though are settings are the same. I am convinced that the problem is not in the manner in which the setup is done. The problem must be elsewhere as I will explain below. John, I believe that your response confirms the fact that I have some kind of a problem other than my setup. Why he asks? :^) You indicated that by doing the Print Grid I would be able to determine the exact maximum virtual page possible on my printer. Well, Print Grid is not telling me that at all. :<( When I do a Print Grid what I am getting, using 10ths of an inch BTW, is a page starting 11/16ths of an inch from the top of the actual page and continuing down until it reaches 3/8ths of an inch from the bottom of the actual page. AND THEN, it ejects the first page, continues to print 3/16ths of an inch below the top of the actual 2nd page for 4/10th of one inch. AND THEN, it ejects the second page, and continues to print beginning 1/16th of an inch from the top of the actual 3rd page, and continues printing for 1/8th of an inch finally ejecting the 3rd page and quits. Based on your description of what I should be expecting from Print Grid, I do believe that I have some sort of problem present. Hopefully after reading the above, you will AGREE, and even more hopefully, will be able to render a solution. Sorry for the long post, but I think it is necessary to explain the problem as clearly as I can through this media. Looking forward to your response. Thanks in advance, Lorne.... But even so, Print Grid is telling you what area you printer is allowing on a page. You should listen to it. Based on the numbers you posted, your printer is allowing a printable page length of only 9.9 inches: 11" - (11/16" + 3/8") = 9-15/16" You should "Set Paper Size" to "Other: Width: ? Height: 9.9" (you didn't mention the width of your "Print Grid" page). This tells Calligrapher what it can expect to be able to fit on a page. Double-check your DIP switch settings. Another thing to check is to make sure you don't have an ACC or AUTO program that's configuring your printer every time you boot up. One thing I frequently do in Calligrapher2 is print several documents in one session. I'll get their icons on the Calligrapher desktop then drag them all to the printer icon. The demo of Calligrapher3 seemed to do away with the internal desktop (I presume for MTOS reasons) so is there some other method to do what I have described? It has the dimensions that you set in the "Set Paper Size" dialog box. This should be the _printable_ _area_ of your printer, NOT the actual dimensions of the piece of paper upon which you are printing. Somehow, I don't think my explanations of this are not getting through. If you can figure out where I'm being vague, please let me know. The dotted line within the white box in the preview screen is your "virtual page". The virtual page is defined by the largest right margin on any individual page, and the "page length" in the customize box. These dimensions are saved separately with each document you create and should be smaller than the "physical page" which is defined in the "Set Paper Size" box. To what size have you set your "Set Paper Size" dimensions? What is the size of your "virtual page"? John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 120 Thu Mar 04, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 22:31 EST Gordon, That's interesting. I hadn't noticed that the Cal 3 demo didn't have its own desktop icons. The release version still has the desktop stuff. I also didn't realize that anyone actually used that stuff. It's good to know. Thanks for the FAX last night. We got a good chuckle from it! (It also had not occured to me that the three of us make up one name: John Charles Tomas). Duane, Warp 9 does not watch the printer port for activity in its countdown. This would slow down the overall screen acceleration of Warp 9 and be counter to its purpose. Perhaps the reason it refrains from kicking in with Calamaus and other programs is that they may use VDI graphics to display their progress messages. To eliminate the problem in Calligrapher, either use a screensaver that does not take so much processor time, or move the mouse to the Don't Fade corner, or disable the screensaver for CAL.PRG in your Warp 9 DAT file. Lorne, I'm glad you figured out a workable set of parameters for the labels. All other window sizes are saved, except the one that opens _every time_ the program is run! Humpf! Of course, for those of you who don't use the icons, this isn't a problem. But I have my icons and first three document icons configured to line the right hand side of my screen - which leaves me a nice 7 inches of text window to view! With the custom document icons I have created for most of my work, it looks sweet (after I re-size the blasted first window)! Second is the addition of the second choice of printer drivers. I have installed STFAX.SYS as the second driver and it makes great faxes for me. I wonder if there is a way of changing the path in that driver so that it sends the completed fax file to F:\STFAX\FAXES instead of to the root drive? I guess I should ask elsewhere. Now that I have my stationary designed, I would like to be able to print out envelopes on my laser printer but this involves manually inserting the envelopes sideways and the printer has to be reset to accomodate this. Bill Destler ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 132 Fri Mar 12, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 10:06 EST Bill Destler, There are sometimes some very slight discrepancies between the screen and the printout when characters are place very close to the next Tab setting. If you're having problems with it, you should adjust your Tabs a little bit, or shorten the text. Tab 1 Tab 2 Decimal Tab 3 | | | 1. some text some more text $1.00 2. some longer text more of the same $2.00 3. some even longer text $3.00 In line three above, it's possible that the end of the text might be too close to Tab 2. If so, the printout might have the "$3.00" pushed over to a fourth tab (assuming there are two tabs before the "$3.00"). Try moving some of your Tabs slightly (a pure pleasure if you've got Calligrapher 3!) and I think you'll get a handle on the problem. You may remember I upgraded to Calligrapher 3 at Sacramento last Saturday. I just got around trying to install it & weird happenings have been happening. 1. After running the Install programs and creating folders CAL & CALFRONTS on drive D, I created a folder CALLIG_3 also on Drive D. Then I asked MAXIFILE to move folders CAL & CALFONTS into folder CALLIG_3 (open, of course on drive D as destination) and received the prompt "You cannot copy a file into itself." ? So I created a folder CALLIG_3 on drive E and the folder CAL & CALFONTS marched into it like good little soldiers. Then I erased CAL & CALFONTS and moved the folder CALLIG_3 onto drive D. But that prompt doesn't make sense, does it? 2. Okay. Then I inserted disk 5 (Which should have had freebie font GARAMOND on it, shouldn't it? It only has CAL. PRG & INSTALL.PRG.) maybe I'm kinda of vague about what to do with disk 5, but I selected INSTALL.PRG. It said it was reading CAL.PRG for a while & then gave me an "Error in reading disk" for several attempts. 3. Okay. I'll drop a message to the CodeHeads & find out how I've screwed up this time, but let's at least see what CAL3 looks like. Clicked on CAL.PRG., got the beloved "Insert Main Program Disk" prompt. Now, if I remember, that should be disk 1...dropped it in... got same prompt...over & over. Okay. Let's try disk 5... maybe, since I'm legit that's the "master disk". Same prompt. "Insert master disk." Okay. Let's try replacing the CAL.PRG installed from disk 1 by copying the CAL.PRG from disk five to drive D. Sure! That's the one that makes one legit. Why didn't I think of that before? Done. Click on this CAL.PRG &.... BINGO!... "Insert master disk". Okay. Let's insert disk 1. "Insert master disk." Hm. This is growing tedious. Okay. Drop a note to the CodeHeads. Hope eveyone's okay. My best Stan ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 135 Thu Mar 18, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 04:10 EST Stan, You should try running CALSETUP from your CAL folder on the hard drive. This will allow you to set the path for Calligrapher's fonts. I think this will solve your problem. However, as an alternative, you could delete the current installation and re- run the install program from disk 1. Calligrapher installs itself into two folders on the root directory of whatever partition you choose. The program expects to find its files there. Disk 5 contains the non-protected version of Calligrapher 3. Running it's install program will give you the ability to run Calligrapher without the need to insert a disk. Your free font should have been on yet another floppy. ===Tomas=== March 18, 1993 @ 1:03:03 am PST ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 136 Thu Mar 18, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 11:06 EST Stan, Tomas answered your question (mahvelously, I might add :^). I've always thought my expository writing was reasonably clear, but senility must be closing in. I'll try real hard this time. > You should try running CALSETUP from your CAL folder on the hard drive. This >will allow you to set the path for Calligrapher's fonts. I'm sorry, but I don't recall mentioning a problem with fonts. > However, as an alternative, you could delete the current installation and re- >run the install program from disk 1. Calligrapher installs itself into two >folders on the root directory of whatever partition you choose. The program >expects to find its files there. This is what I did in the first place and, yes, this is indeed what the Install program from disk 1 did...it created two folders om the root directory of the partition I choose. What puzzled me was: when I asked MAXIFILE to "copy" these two folders into a third folder with the name "CALLIG 3" I received a prompt that said "You cannot copy a file to itself". I wasn't copying a file, so s file couldn't be copied to itself...I was trying to copy two folders into another folder. This is what I was questioning. I've copied folders into folders before without this happening. Where did the difficulty come from? Some misreading in MAXIFILE? or something in CALLIGRAPHER? When I asked MAXIFILE to copy the two folders created by the Install progroam on disk 1 into another folder named Callig 3 on a different partition, I didn't receive the prompt "You can't copy a file to itself." Instead the folders were copied normally. > Disk 5 contains the non-protected version of Calligrapher 3. Running it's >install program will give you the ability to run Calligrapher without the need >to insert a disk. I thought I indicated that running the Install program on disk brought up a prompt that read "Error in reading" and the non-protected version did not get installed. Further, clicking on the copy protected version of CALLIGRAPHER 3 on disk 1 brought up the prompt "Insert master disk", but with disk 1 inserted I kept getting the same prompt over and over Now, after getting your messages I finally figured out the first part of this problem...the two folders, CAL and CALFONTS, have to remain on the root directory when using the Install program on disk 5 and, as I indicated, I had copied them into another folder, which was a stupid thing to do. I just did the Install program on disk 5 with the two folders in the root directory and it ran through to "Installation complete". The size of CAL.PRG installed is the same size as the CAL.PRG on disk 5.....BUT when I click on CAL.PRG the "Insert master disk" prompt STILL comes up, although this should be the non-protected version, and inserting disk 1 still bring up the same prompt over and over. > Your free font should have been on yet another floppy. Well, what I got were five disks, four of them shrink wrapped, and number 5. No big deal. Any further help much appreciated. Stan m200 ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 138 Fri Mar 19, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 04:49 EST Stan, Calligrapher's install program creates two folders in the partition of your choice: CAL and CALFONTS. It then proceeds to install all of the files and finishes by altering CAL.PRG internally with the path of the font folder. If you change the drive or the name of the folder containing the fonts, you need to run CALSETUP.PRG and alter the path line (the one ending with "*.SYS"). This will once again change CAL.PRG internally so that it will not come up with the "Insert the main program disk" alert box. You described how you had copied your folders to another location. You didn't mention a problem with fonts, but you mentioned getting the alert box and we know that the reason that the alert box comes up is because Calligrapher can't find its fonts. That's why we told you to run CALSETUP. Please try it and see if it solves your problem. (There should have been a "Read Me Now!" insert in your update pack which tells you all about the way these folders are handled. Our apologies if this wasn't included in your package. Let us know if you need us to send you one.) The install program on disk 5 just copies CAL.PRG into your Calligrapher folder and makes the same internal adjustments as CALSETUP. We will be happy to replace your disk 5 if you can't read it. But if you are able to successfully copy it to your Calligrapher folder, you can run CALSETUP and you should be in business. Please give it a try. I do remember making your Garamond disk while you were talking to me at our booth in Sacramento (do you remember me applying a disk label to a blank disk?). The free font is on a disk of its own. We didn't find an extra Garamond disk after the show was over. If you can't find it among your show paraphernalia, let us know and we'll send you another. As for your message in MaxiFile, I don't know why that would happen. The message is only supposed to come up when you try to copy a file over itself. I would suggest that maybe you were mistaken about the source and destination directories, but you sound pretty sure that that wasn't the case. If you can duplicate this message with some combination of folders and files, please document it so we can look into it. Note that to GEMDOS, file and folder names are the same so you can't copy a file into a directory containing a folder of the same name (e.g. can't copy a file named "AUTO" to the root of your C drive). (Also, when you copy folders containing files, you _are_ copying files.) I hope this helps. Let us know if we can be of further assistance. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 139 Mon Mar 22, 1993 S.FARWIG [STAN] at 00:46 EST John: Thanks for the clarification. While I didn't change the name of the folder containing the fonts or the drive, I did, as indicated change the path by copying both the CAL folder & the CALFONT Folder into a a third folder CALLIG 3. It was strange than even after realizing my mistake and coyping both CAL folders back to the root directory and running the INSTALL program on disk five and receiving an installation complete message, CAL.PRG kept demanding the "Master disk" and then not acting upon it. In any case, I erased everything and started from the beginning and now everything is fine. Re: the copy problem in Maxifile...this is for real. I just tested it again with essentially the same results, only this time the prompt read "You can't copy a folder to itself." I'm positive the previous prompt read "file" not "folder"...believe me, I read it enough. Here is the setup: On partition D I created a folder named CALLIG 3 and that was opened on D as the destination with no contents in it I highlighted CAL folder & CALFONTS folder and issued a "copy" command. Three distinct names are involved, but the "You can't copy a folder to itself" prompt appeared. Now. when I created the same CALLIG 3 folder on drive E as the destination and issued the "copy" command, the CAL folder & the CALFONTS folders are copied across partitions without difficulty. Forgive my tech limitations, but is it possible that when copying on the same drive, only the first three letters of the name is being read, somehow, somewhere? Re: the Garamond font...mea culpa...I *am* sorry, John...the separate font disk got mixed up with the old Calligrapher disks in my Calligrapher box. I feel very foolish. As for the MaxiFile problem, I was indeed able to duplicate it. Further testing shows that if (on the same drive) you try to copy a folder whose entire name is contained in the destination folder, you'll get that alert. It looks like a bug to me. It doesn't happen on the desktop. I think the routine probably compares up to the end of the folder name and thinks it's found a match. Charles? When I exit the program, and later rerun it, I get two bombs and the system locks up when I try to load the file with the graphic. If I cave the file with the graphic not shown (frame only) it reloads without problem. I haven't made any changes in the system that I am aware of, and did not previously have this problem. It occurs in medium and hi resolution. 2) Due to a mishap I am using a medium resolution monitor only. Calligrapher was installed to use medium or high resolution. when printing or previewing, Calligrapher does not take into acount the change in aspect ratio and will print only 1/2 of each page. Any suggestions? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 156 Tue Apr 06, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 01:14 EDT Midimike, Well, I just tried creating a file with 4 GEM metafiles, 3 in the same directory as Callig and one on another partition, with 3 visible and one as frame only and it loads fine. I recall working the other week with a few files that all had GEM metafiles in there and they all loaded without a hitch too. That's weird that it just started happening. Offhand, I would first check the .GEM graphic files to make sure they haven't become corrupted somehow. Look at them in a viewer or Cropmeta.prg. Do you see the "Scaling filename.gem" Callig message, before the bombs show up? How big is the file? Enough free memory? If worse comes to worse, email the file (lh5'd or zip deflated, if big) and I'll check it out. I must confess that I never use Callig in medium rez. Perhaps someone who does will chime in if they had something similiar happen with the medium rez setup. Of what you can see on the preview screen, does the virtual page extend down to the bottom, with the greeked text stopping halfway? Does it do it in both Graphic Text and Text Only modes? If the medium rez fonts are where they're supposed to be and the font folder hasn't been moved or renamed ... hmmm, that does sound odd. I would suggest trying this using while all of the text is at a bitmap point size and then all a vector size, but I really don't think that would make any difference. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 157 Tue Apr 06, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 02:23 EDT Bob Jones, I've never tried using tabs within tables. He mentioned that he didn't remember there being a problem in Cal2, it caused me to investigate, and I found out that the HP driver with Calligrapher 2 does print the number of copies set on your printer (it doesn't cancel it back to 1). I copied HPL300.SYS from my Calligrapher 2 font folder into my Calligrapher 3 font folder. When the "name conflict" came up, I renamed it to HPL3_OLD.SYS. I then ran CalSetup to assign it as my driver and it allowed printing the number of copies set on my Epson Action Laser (HPLJ-compatible). You can keep both drivers installed and select between them from the print box. The driver with Cal3 is improved, so unless you're printing multiple copies it may be better to use the newer one. The first thing I'd try is to boot up with nothing else installed to eliminate the possibility of external problems. Ken Van, Yes, depending on which printer you have, dot-matrix output can be very slow. But _Calligrapher's_ part of it will be faster. The lower the resolution, the faster Calligrapher can build the fonts (or maybe they're already in the cache). What we sometimes forget (and some people don't know) is that a GDOS program, including Calligrapher, will send the exact same set of VDI commands to print a page, no matter what the output device is. Differences in the speed of these processes are determined only by the efficiency of the (GDOS) driver and the physical speed of the printer. As for cancelling a printout, that's also a function of the driver. When you tell Calligrapher to abort a printout mid-stream, it will stop what it's doing and "close" the printer workstation. The driver may perform an "update workstation" call which will usually spit out a page on a printer. Although, I've had to cancel a number of printouts, I try to minimize it by using Preview to examine it first. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 164 Fri Apr 09, 1993 M.EVERHART2 [MIDIMIKE] at 01:36 EDT Well, it is definitely the fonts. GEM metafiles without fonts load flawlessly. More on medrez: Using the graphics mode, I am able to print and preview OK, barring the change in vertical scale. No matter what I do, when using text only mode, the program gives me a message that the page size has been reduced to fit the paper - even with 25 by 25 inch paper size! Using the horizontal and vertical align functions I have overcome this problem by putting the left upper corner of the text where I want it and letting it print from there. When attempting to use SEBRA, the monochrome emulator, the program scaled each font in half to print (12pt printed as 6pt, etc). ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 165 Fri Apr 09, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 02:46 EDT Midimike, Just another off-the-top-of-my-head thought. Check the "% Size" field in the Print or Preview dialogs. It's the one down in the very lower right hand side. It should normally be 100%. But I've seen times when, due to weird settings I accidentally used in the Page Length option of the Customize and Preferences sections, that the program scaled the page for me, with the message you described, and I didn't catch this until later I discovered that my succeeding printouts were being reduced/enlarged until I reset "% Size" in the Print dialog back to 100%. If the "% Size" figure is something other than 100% (unless you set it to something else) then something, like specifying too large of a virtual page length for the paper size, can be causing the auto scaling of the page to fit. For example, let's say you're using 8.5 x 11 paper size and accidentally specify a 20 inch page length in the Customize or Preferences section for the virtual page. Obviously, Callig will then have to scale the virtual page down, to fit the 20 inch page onto 11 inches, in this case to 73% (at least that what Callig just showed me, percentage-wise). :-) One important tip to keep in mind, also, is that, when changing the Page Length in the Customize and Preferences sections, changing this figure and then hitting Return _cancels_ your edit since the default key is the Cancel button. You must edit and then click on OK for the changes to take effect. That's interesting about the problem of loading GEM metafiles with text in them, although I'm not surprised. Seems most graphics prg's have trouble displaying GDOS text properly when it's in a metafile. I don't know if this is due to a lack of standards for implementing this text in a metafile, or what, but I've always added my text later, when using other art/vector prg's in the past. It was easier and looked better. Oh well. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 166 Fri Apr 09, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:58 EDT Thanks for the explanation, John. Your attempts at fixing it with Paper Size were only making it worse. The page length in your Customize box must be less than the length in your "Paper Size" setting if you don't want the reduction. I'm not familiar with SEBRA, but there's nothing Calligrapher can do to overcome shortcomings in the way an emulator works. It is, however, the only mono emulator that runs with any reliability on my TOS 2.05 machine. Not a bad effort. THe twos only appeared when I swiched to 14 pt. I will have to experiment with disabling some auto programs and acc's to see if it's a conflict problem. With this glitch fixed, prints fine from medrez. Because the finer dpi screen fonts in Cal, Medres is actually easier to look at! Regarding the program "Resizing the virtual page to fit the paper" in TEXT ONLY mode - this is pretty wierd, but you have to set the page length in the CUSTOMIZE dialog to some amount very small, say 0, and the program then prints and previews text-only without any problems (using page length in lines-per- page as set in the TEXT PRINTER dialog). Boy, I hope I can get a Monochrome monitor soon. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 179 Sun Apr 11, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:16 EDT Midimike, Hmmm ... that's odd. I use Text Only mode all the time and I never have to fiddle with the Page Length setting, but this is in monochrome. I leave mine set to 9.7 inches. Previews and Prints are fine. Has the prg done that from day 1? One other small point that is unrelated is to be sure that you have the proper measuring system format specified in the Preferences section. I use inches. Having this set to centimeters can obviously mess things up when you're thinking you're dealing with inches in the various areas of the prg. - Mel (Off topic thought- I too was impressed with Sebra, the monochrome emulator for color monitors, file #26462. Have you tried a simple, basic file (such as just the word "Test")? It would be unlikely that PageStream would be able to handle every feature of Calligrapher (such as something as unique as tables). It wouldn't make sense for the author of PageStream to completely clone Calligrapher within the import module. The few files I tested with PageStream's import module were fairly simple. If I'd had a problem importing a document, my next step would be to try a simpler document in an attempt to determine the nature of the problem. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 181 Mon Apr 12, 1993 J.WILSON103 [John] at 20:57 EDT >John Wilson, > >Regarding your problems with importing CAL files into PageStream, have you >tried more than one file?hHave you tried a simple, basic file (such as just >the word "Test")? > John Eidsvoog, You are of course correct. The file I tried to import had some fancy dancy stuff in it...I had already backed off to simpler 'plain' text type, and it imported fine. Actually I had been trying to pretty up a resume. (G). BTW, the problem with wordwrap on screen with 10pt fonts being shorter than on printer is gone in Cal 3. I got my mono back, so it's moot. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 183 Tue Apr 13, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 02:15 EDT I just found an anomoly while creating tables Calligrapher. If you are creating two tables on a page, having one above in created form and one below in broken form and then create the second table (bottom table),calligrapher will move the second table to the next page if its too large to fit in the vitual page. This part is fine, but if you create one large Table, one that in broken form is almost as long as your virtual page Calligrapher will attempt to move the created table down to the next page, since the next page is the same length as the one you started on it attempts to move it to the third page and so on. This continues until all the memory is used up and a fatal crash is the result. The program does give one final warning, allowing you to save before the crash, it then crashes during the save. It's a problem that will be avoided by me in future sessions, but hopefully it will be trapped out in future versions. Bob Jones ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 185 Mon Apr 19, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 01:45 EDT John, Are there plans to allow use of the speedo gdos bitstream fonts within calligrapher?? A few requests for future versions of Calligrapher: Locking rulers. It's a bit annoying watching the ruler slide out of view when editing margins, text etc. A graphical ruler option. This would be a ruler in addition to the current one. Make it icon based similar to the Mac Wordprocessors and even like Atari Works. Icons could include underlining, centering, justification, spell check etc. Any chance of seeing some of these within the next year?? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 186 Mon Apr 19, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:35 EDT Bob, Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing a fixed ruler at the top of the page, when moving about the document, the ruler always reflecting the settings of the last placed one in the document. Currently, if you need to continually refer to the ruler, you can open two copies of the same document and use Alt-W to switch between the two, keeping one window fixed on the ruler while the other is on your current point of editing, but if you change the ruler settings in the first, the changes won't be reflected in both windows. Another trick you can use, if the ruler you need to edit is somewhere else in your document, is to place a marker by it and then use the Find Marker option to move to it quickly. But, yes, a fixed ruler at the top of the page, always reflecting the settings of the last placed one in the document, would be a good feature. The toolbox option at the top of the screen is one that seems to be popular in Europe with several wp's (Signum, Script, Papyrus) and in the upcoming Atariworks. Personally, I love to have as much of my document visible as possible, (wouldn't mind seeing the rulers in Callig about half the height they are now, even ) but a toolbox is good for getting to grips with a wp quickly. A popup toolbox wouldn't be bad, that allows you to choose your function with the mouse and then it disappears, or else an option to remove a toolbox at the top of the page. The icons in Wordwriter and First Word Plus were nice since once you knew the keyboard equivs, you could full size the window to cover them. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 187 Mon Apr 19, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 10:45 EDT Bob Jones, Thank you for your suggestions. I use Calligrapher a lot. I'm writing the MIDI Spy manual with it, and there have only been a couple of instances that I've wanted to do something that Calligrapher can't do (where Calamus or PageStream would do better). But it would be nice to have the current ruler displayed at the top of the screen (I don't think I'd call this "locking rulers", though). I can't say whether these will be added to Calligrapher in the next year or not. I hope so. Do you have AtariWorks? I haven't seen it yet. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 188 Mon Apr 19, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:17 EDT Another ruler trick is to define one of your style tags as a ruler only. I can press F7 and my "body text" ruler appears. If you only want to grab a quick look at it, you can just press Undo to remove it. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 189 Mon Apr 19, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 23:38 EDT Oops, a longish post: beware! Ditto what Bob Jones and Mel said: "Locking" ruler and TOOLBOX: one shouldn't need ruler after ruler just to justify text right, left, or center - these things should be obvious and NOT require a browsing of the manual. It's those wacky Europeans... Re: docs - I don't think I've read 10 pages of the PageStream manual (no need - it's obvious) and I use it professionally every day. I find myself _delving_ into the 300+ page Calig manual. BTW- I have played extensively with Atari Works and Speedo GDOS (-wow-), and feel it would be very smart to support Speedo in Calligrapher, which I've yet to register (floppy bummer-whatever happened to registration programs?). Speedo is cleaner and draws faster on screen than Calligrapher's font handler, and prints a bit faster with at least the same quality. The main Speedo asset would be cross-program uniformity (a la the Mac, Type Manager, etc.) wherein Speedo could offer all developers a common, high-end output option. I've seen it work in A-Works as well as WordFlair 2 (not FSM- SPEEDO in WF2)- and it's terrific. Still feeling out Calligrapher... not quite sure how it fits yet, but Flex Text is very cute. One thing I did notice: Calligrapher prints off-center for me (DJ 500C), especially relative to the print preview views (with no offsets set). This requires some hit and miss margin adjustments to get text straight on the page, a real bummer with multiple rulers up. One thing Atari Works does nicely: upon adjusting any element of the ruler (tabs, margins, indents, etc.) alignment guides drop down, and a 1/100 inch dialogue displays exact coordinates. Atari Works allows different tabs, etc. for each line or paragraph or page or document based upon what's higlighted when fooling with the ruler items. I have some ambitious ideas for Calligrapher, and would quite enjoy seeing some "speedy" enhancements to the interface. Finally, I find it odd that Atari hasn't sent CodeHead Speedo and Atari Works, etc. Who better to evaluate, implement, support, and improve these cornerstones of Atari's future? People who have never even _seen_ an Atari dealer know about CodeHead... - Richard Brown ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 190 Tue Apr 20, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 00:52 EDT Locking, fixed, chained, any one of the three would be a great addition. As for Atari Works, doesn't everyone have it? (Grin) Take a look at the March issue of ST informer, they included some nice screen shots. I like the idea of the toolbox at the top. It allows the user to quickly click on icons B,I,U,Ss,Sb (Bold, itallic, underline, super/subscript) which would seem faster than the calligrapher method. I'm not sure if it allows for hiding the tools, it would be a nice option. Yes, I agree in advance that it probably cannot come close to Calligraphers power. Calligrapher does approach perfection in wordprocessing I only use pagstream if I want a fancy title page or special text effects. Bob J. John, I like the F7 ruler trick, I'll give it a go! ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 191 Tue Apr 20, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 17:29 EDT Yeah John, thanks for the F7 ruler trick, it'll come in handy. Sounds like a natural addition to that CodeHead Companion book, eh? :) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 192 Tue Apr 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 20:20 EDT Of course, you don't have to assign your ruler style tag to F7 -- it can be any of the function keys. Here's another tip about the rulers. As I mentioned, I have a "body text" ruler as one of my style tags. Throughout the MIDI Spy manual, there are a lot of other rulers used for graphics, captions, columns, etc. After each of these sections, I usually return to my body text so there are dozens of body text rulers thoughout the 60+ pages. The document will use justified text when it's finished but it's a lot easier to work on the document with left justification. At first I thought I'd have to alter every ruler each time I wanted to switch between left and full justification, but it's much easier than that. All I need to do is double-click on any "body text" ruler and select the type of justification I want. An alert box will ask if I want to change all tags of that type. Just answer "Yes" and the entire document will be reformatted. The same is true of any function of the ruler, such as setting the right margin. This process applies also to other tag styles as well, making it easy to experiment with different type styles, changing all headings or all sub-titles or all body text by simply placing the cursor within the appropriate style and selecting a different font or point size. It certainly makes things easy.
