This topic is for discussion and support of Calligrapher - the next-generation document processor from CodeHead Technologies and Working Title US. 203 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 1 Thu Jan 14, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:53 EST For Immediate Release CodeHeadQuarters Tuesday, January 12, 1993 ------------------------- ******************************************************* * * * Calligrapher 3 * * * * The Next Generation Of The Ultimate Writing Machine * * * ******************************************************* LOS ANGELES - CodeHead Technologies and Working Title US are proud to announce the release of Calligrapher 3! If you're already familiar with Calligrapher, you know it's a powerful, intuitive, graphics-based word processor. Now, Calligrapher 3 adds terrific new features, streamlines the installation procedure, is compatible with the Falcon030 and MultiTOS, and no longer uses GDOS! This document describes the enhancements and changes in Calligrapher 3, as well as the procedure for upgrading to version 3. If you are unfamiliar with Calligrapher and its features, you can obtain an excellent overview by trying out the Calligrapher 3 demo package, available by calling CodeHead Technologies (213) 386-5735, or by downloading the demo from any of the popular online networks. Enhancements -------------- o GDOS (G+Callig) and Line_Arc have been built into Calligrapher itself, so there is no longer any special startup disk and nothing is required in the AUTO folder. This makes it much more compatible with other GDOS programs since there is no overlap, and also makes installation and setup MUCH easier and less trouble-prone. o If you have a hard disk and 2Mb, Calligrapher displays vector fonts on screen. The new edition caches screen fonts more intelligently, speeding up the opening of documents and moving through documents that contain vector fonts. o Supports Esc-P2 printers (Epson Dot Matrix printers that support 360dpi compressed mode). o Allows you to reduce the amount of memory taken by Calligrapher to make it compatible with multitasking operating systems such as MultiGem and MultiTOS. o A new easy-to-use fast install program supporting 1.44Mb disk drives and the new features of Calligrapher. This program uses a GEM dialog box and is more intelligent; it reads in as many files as will fit in memory and then writes them to the hard drive, and requires a minimal amount of disk swapping. o Templates - documents with the extension CAT, are treated as base documents. (Similar to 'stationery' documents on the Macintosh.) Calligrapher will prompt you to rename them when they are saved. Also there is a default template that is loaded when Calligrapher is first started. This allows you, for example, to save the ruler settings for your default ruler. o The FlexText module now allows you to USE ANY URW typeface, not just the included ones. o On a TT, Calligrapher now moves its code into TT RAM to run 30% faster. o Import/export of Rich Text Format (RTF) files has been added to the import module. These files allow you to keep the style and fonts within a document, together with any footnotes, when you transfer to other programs that support RTF. o The integral symbol and brackets in Calligrapher's mathematical formulae have been improved. o There are new commands in formulae to cover set symbols, and things such as products. Equivalents have been added in the interactive formula editor. o When you adjust markers on the ruler (margins, tabs, etc.), a vertical line is drawn to help you gauge positions. o Mark a section and increase or decrease all font sizes proportionally (by the proportion 9/10ths or 10/9ths). o Keyboard shortcuts have been added to the interactive formula editor. o A new program allows you to change Calligrapher's internal setup. This allows adjustments to its memory, printer and other internal details. o The supplementary language disks have been improved. Spanish includes a Catalan dictionary and a Spanish thesaurus. German has a German dictionary and thesaurus. Italian has a Catalan dictionary. o A triple click on a paragraph selects the whole paragraph. o When running under a multitasking operating system, the disk-based clipboard is switched on, allowing you to cut and paste text dynamically between applications. o Two printers are supported at the same time, allowing you to switch between them at print time. o A separation line has been added between footnotes and the body of text. o Calligrapher 3 remembers the pathname when inserting multiple graphics into a document. o There is a driver for the Ricoh 1200 laser printer at 400dpi. System Requirements ------------------- o Calligrapher 3 Professional requires 1 Mb of RAM and a floppy disk. Calligrapher 3 Gold requires 1 Mb and a hard disk. Version 3 requires more memory than version 2, so if your documents are at the limit of memory with version 2, you will be over the limit with version 3. New Fonts --------- o There are 20 new URW typefaces available, number 67 through 86. o These new fonts will only work with version 3 of Calligrapher. o Previously purchased font disks can be re-installed to work with Calligrapher 3 by using a new install program included with the upgrade. o Font charts files will be uploaded to the online services, allowing you to print out sample displays of the new fonts on your own printer. o The new fonts are as follows: 67 Goudy 72 Stencil 77 T-bird Cond. 82 Olde Towne No. 536 68 Grotesque No.9 73 Stop 78 Latin Wide 83 News Gothic 69 Hobo 74 Serpentine 79 Murray Hill 84 Raleigh 70 Nevison Casual 75 Thorowgood 80 Park Avenue 85 Romana Demi Bold 71 Playbill 76 Thunderbird 81 Maxima 86 Stymie Items Removed -------------- Some things have been removed due to the changes in the way Calligrapher operates. If any of these things are essential to your needs, you should not upgrade, or you should make sure to save an installed copy of your current Calligrapher. o Bitmap GDOS printer fonts are no longer supported. Only URW outline fonts will be output to your printer. o Sizefont, Editfont, and Assign Edit have been dropped as they are no longer relevant. o The ability to print to disk in PTD format has been removed, along with DiskPrnt. o FlexText no longer runs as a separate program, due to the lack of GDOS/G+Callig support. It must be run as a PAK. Some changes have been made to reduce the amount of memory it consumes. (It can run on a 1 Mb system). Upgrade Procedure ----------------- When you upgrade to Calligrapher 3, you're also entitled to one FREE URW outline font disk (worth $34.95). And since the new version of Calligrapher only works with the URW outline fonts, any additional font families that you purchase along with the upgrade are only $25 (a $10 discount). o The upgrade price from version 2 to version 3 is $45. o The upgrade price from Calligrapher Professional version 2 to Calligrapher Gold version 3 is $100. o The upgrade price (either $45 or $100) includes ONE FREE URW FONT DISK, worth $34.95. Any one of the existing typefaces may be chosen, including the new fonts mentioned above. o The upgrade is available to anyone who owns the Working Title US (CodeHead) version of Calligrapher and has received a registered disk 5 from us. o The upgrade may be purchased by phone or E-Mail by supplying us with a credit card number (including expiration date) and a shipping address. It is not necessary to return your original disks. o The upgrade may also be ordered by mail with a check or money order. o The upgrade includes five disks plus the free font disk and printed documentation for the new additions. o Additional URW font disks may be purchased with the upgrade at the price of $25 each. o Shipping and handling charges for the upgrade are $3 US, $4 Canada, and $6 overseas. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title US, a division of CodeHead Technologies, is the official US importer of Working Title products. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 2 Mon Apr 19, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 01:45 EDT John, Are there plans to allow use of the speedo gdos bitstream fonts within calligrapher?? A few requests for future versions of Calligrapher: Locking rulers. It's a bit annoying watching the ruler slide out of view when editing margins, text etc. A graphical ruler option. This would be a ruler in addition to the current one. Make it icon based similar to the Mac Wordprocessors and even like Atari Works. Icons could include underlining, centering, justification, spell check etc. Any chance of seeing some of these within the next year?? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 3 Mon Apr 19, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:35 EDT Bob, Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing a fixed ruler at the top of the page, when moving about the document, the ruler always reflecting the settings of the last placed one in the document. Currently, if you need to continually refer to the ruler, you can open two copies of the same document and use Alt-W to switch between the two, keeping one window fixed on the ruler while the other is on your current point of editing, but if you change the ruler settings in the first, the changes won't be reflected in both windows. Another trick you can use, if the ruler you need to edit is somewhere else in your document, is to place a marker by it and then use the Find Marker option to move to it quickly. But, yes, a fixed ruler at the top of the page, always reflecting the settings of the last placed one in the document, would be a good feature. The toolbox option at the top of the screen is one that seems to be popular in Europe with several wp's (Signum, Script, Papyrus) and in the upcoming Atariworks. Personally, I love to have as much of my document visible as possible, (wouldn't mind seeing the rulers in Callig about half the height they are now, even ) but a toolbox is good for getting to grips with a wp quickly. A popup toolbox wouldn't be bad, that allows you to choose your function with the mouse and then it disappears, or else an option to remove a toolbox at the top of the page. The icons in Wordwriter and First Word Plus were nice since once you knew the keyboard equivs, you could full size the window to cover them. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 4 Mon Apr 19, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 10:45 EDT Bob Jones, Thank you for your suggestions. I use Calligrapher a lot. I'm writing the MIDI Spy manual with it, and there have only been a couple of instances that I've wanted to do something that Calligrapher can't do (where Calamus or PageStream would do better). But it would be nice to have the current ruler displayed at the top of the screen (I don't think I'd call this "locking rulers", though). I can't say whether these will be added to Calligrapher in the next year or not. I hope so. Do you have AtariWorks? I haven't seen it yet. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 5 Mon Apr 19, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:17 EDT Another ruler trick is to define one of your style tags as a ruler only. I can press F7 and my "body text" ruler appears. If you only want to grab a quick look at it, you can just press Undo to remove it. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 6 Mon Apr 19, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 23:38 EDT Oops, a longish post: beware! Ditto what Bob Jones and Mel said: "Locking" ruler and TOOLBOX: one shouldn't need ruler after ruler just to justify text right, left, or center - these things should be obvious and NOT require a browsing of the manual. It's those wacky Europeans... Re: docs - I don't think I've read 10 pages of the PageStream manual (no need - it's obvious) and I use it professionally every day. I find myself _delving_ into the 300+ page Calig manual. BTW- I have played extensively with Atari Works and Speedo GDOS (-wow-), and feel it would be very smart to support Speedo in Calligrapher, which I've yet to register (floppy bummer-whatever happened to registration programs?). Speedo is cleaner and draws faster on screen than Calligrapher's font handler, and prints a bit faster with at least the same quality. The main Speedo asset would be cross-program uniformity (a la the Mac, Type Manager, etc.) wherein Speedo could offer all developers a common, high-end output option. I've seen it work in A-Works as well as WordFlair 2 (not FSM- SPEEDO in WF2)- and it's terrific. Still feeling out Calligrapher... not quite sure how it fits yet, but Flex Text is very cute. One thing I did notice: Calligrapher prints off-center for me (DJ 500C), especially relative to the print preview views (with no offsets set). This requires some hit and miss margin adjustments to get text straight on the page, a real bummer with multiple rulers up. One thing Atari Works does nicely: upon adjusting any element of the ruler (tabs, margins, indents, etc.) alignment guides drop down, and a 1/100 inch dialogue displays exact coordinates. Atari Works allows different tabs, etc. for each line or paragraph or page or document based upon what's higlighted when fooling with the ruler items. I have some ambitious ideas for Calligrapher, and would quite enjoy seeing some "speedy" enhancements to the interface. Finally, I find it odd that Atari hasn't sent CodeHead Speedo and Atari Works, etc. Who better to evaluate, implement, support, and improve these cornerstones of Atari's future? People who have never even _seen_ an Atari dealer know about CodeHead... - Richard Brown ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 7 Tue Apr 20, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 00:52 EDT Locking, fixed, chained, any one of the three would be a great addition. As for Atari Works, doesn't everyone have it? (Grin) Take a look at the March issue of ST informer, they included some nice screen shots. I like the idea of the toolbox at the top. It allows the user to quickly click on icons B,I,U,Ss,Sb (Bold, itallic, underline, super/subscript) which would seem faster than the calligrapher method. I'm not sure if it allows for hiding the tools, it would be a nice option. Yes, I agree in advance that it probably cannot come close to Calligraphers power. Calligrapher does approach perfection in wordprocessing I only use pagstream if I want a fancy title page or special text effects. Bob J. John, I like the F7 ruler trick, I'll give it a go! ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 8 Tue Apr 20, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 17:29 EDT Yeah John, thanks for the F7 ruler trick, it'll come in handy. Sounds like a natural addition to that CodeHead Companion book, eh? :) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 9 Tue Apr 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 20:20 EDT Of course, you don't have to assign your ruler style tag to F7 -- it can be any of the function keys. Here's another tip about the rulers. As I mentioned, I have a "body text" ruler as one of my style tags. Throughout the MIDI Spy manual, there are a lot of other rulers used for graphics, captions, columns, etc. After each of these sections, I usually return to my body text so there are dozens of body text rulers thoughout the 60+ pages. The document will use justified text when it's finished but it's a lot easier to work on the document with left justification. At first I thought I'd have to alter every ruler each time I wanted to switch between left and full justification, but it's much easier than that. All I need to do is double-click on any "body text" ruler and select the type of justification I want. An alert box will ask if I want to change all tags of that type. Just answer "Yes" and the entire document will be reformatted. The same is true of any function of the ruler, such as setting the right margin. This process applies also to other tag styles as well, making it easy to experiment with different type styles, changing all headings or all sub-titles or all body text by simply placing the cursor within the appropriate style and selecting a different font or point size. It certainly makes things easy. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 10 Tue Apr 20, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:41 EDT John, Calligrapher 2 mail merge question: Is the Superbase merge file a comma delimited file or something similar? The mail merge section of the CAL manual doesn't say, and I don't have Superbase for a database prg. Thanks, Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 11 Wed Apr 21, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 19:56 EDT Ken Springer, I haven't tried the Superbase option. I assume that it uses Superbase files in their native format. If you want to use an ASCII (comma) delimited mail merge file, use the third option: "Other Format". This allows you to select the field and record separators you wish to use. See page 161. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 12 Thu Apr 22, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:17 EDT John, Thanks. Seems I misread that paragraph first time through. I read/remembered only the record separator part. Drats! :-) Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 13 Sun Apr 25, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 11:32 EDT John, Does CAL2 have widow/orphan protection, the ability to prevent just 1 line of the paragraph from being printed on the bottom or top of the page? I thought I saw it in the manual, but now all I can find is "Keep Toghether", but that is not what I want. Somewhere in one of my prg manuals, I saw the feature listed but under a different name, and can't remember where. Drats! Thanks, Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 14 Sun Apr 25, 1993 BHARTSHORNE at 12:21 EDT I have had no trouble importing Cal files into Pagestream 2.2 but I have never tried tables or Art. Flex text files did okay from Cal 2, but Flextext does not run separately now. Bill ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 15 Mon Apr 26, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 11:33 EDT Ken Springer, You've already found the closest thing I know of to widow/orphan protection -- "Keep Together". If there's another, I don't know what it is. I'll have to sit down and read the manual one of these days. Bill Hartshorne, Thanks for the report on PageStream importing. It's true that Flextext doesn't run separately in version 3, but you can still run the Flextext from version 2 as long as you have G+Plus (or GDOS?) installed. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 17 Tue May 04, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 00:30 EDT I have a brief question. I recently purchased a Canon BJ-200 and have reconfigured Calligrapher to use it _quite_ painlessly. Unfortunately I am a bit disappointed at the print quality. I had heard the driver supplied with Calligrapher is only 360x180DPI. Ugh, talk about hobbling a great printer! Are there any plans of getting a better driver, or are there any workarounds that I haven't thought of yet (like using the Epson mode in the BJ and trying the NECP6 driver)? John E. Gniewkowski Editor, GEnieLamp ST ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 18 Tue May 04, 1993 E.JOLLEY [Eric] at 04:28 EDT Howdy All, Has anyone noticed that it's very hard to get text to center when you're typing in underline? I noticed the bug when I had Call 2, and it still seems to be in Call 3. Could somebody confirm this? It may only happen in text-only mode, because that is what I use. All I know is typing at a center tab without underline, it centers, with underline, it doesn't. Have you noticed that? -Eric ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 19 Tue May 04, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 11:56 EDT Eric, No, I hadn't noticed that before, but it's difficult to get center tabbed, underlined text started. Once you get a piece of it to center, it seems to be OK. Have you tried just using a center-aligned ruler. That seems to work find with underlined text. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 20 Wed May 05, 1993 R.JONES82 [Bob Jones] at 00:45 EDT John, I was wondering why the printouts from calligrapher to my Oki-400 laser are not as crisp as those of Wordflair II or pagestream. The fonts just look less defined on paper. Is it the fonts themselves or the printer driver? Has anyone else noticed this? Are there fonts available that print with a cleaner look than those included in the package? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 21 Wed May 05, 1993 E.JOLLEY [Eric] at 00:53 EDT John, Thanks for the tip. I hadn't even thought of using a center aligned ruler. That should save me some frustration. -Eric ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 22 Wed May 05, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 23:02 EDT Bob Jones, I noticed the same thing. Though I can not compare it to Wordflair since I never used that program. I did notice a difference compared with PageStream. I first I just chalked it up to the GDOS output that Calligrapher 2.x used. I noticed the same results in v3 as well. Maybe it is the printer driver? I do not know. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 23 Fri May 07, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 00:21 EDT John, Charles or Tomas, ...speaking of print drivers - any comment about the Canon Bubblejet driver at 360x180DPI? John E. Gniewkowski Editor, GEnieLamp ST ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 24 Fri May 07, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 18:30 EDT John G., Calligrapher 3 comes with a BJ driver that does 360x180dpi. Is that what you're asking about? John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 25 Mon May 10, 1993 L.BUDNICK [Lorne] at 19:20 EDT John or Charles, I have a couple of questions regarding the table function within Cal3. 1) Is there a limit to the number of lines that can be included within a table? I have been using Cal3 to produce project plans which can very easily exceed a single page. If I try to incorporate all of the text into a table, the text seems to disappear and I end up with a empty window and NO table. 2) If there is no way to include text which would require more than a single page worth of data to be included in the table, is there some way to determine when you reach the maximum amount of text that will be successfully incorporated into a table? 3) If multiple pages are not supported, is there a way in which to insure that when a table is created for each page of text in a document, that the sizing of each table created is consistent from page to page? Hopefully the above is understandable. If not I will be happy to try to explain further. BTW, I have RTFM, but cannot find the answers to the above. Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated. Lorne.... Monday May 10, 1993 04:32:52 p.m. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 26 Tue May 11, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 11:23 EDT Lorne, I noticed that too, the disappearing table if the data exceeded one page. Couldn't get it to reappear either. I guess the author figured most people would only create tables under a page long. (I suppose you could fudge here and set up Callig for legal size paper, to get a few extra inches out of each table, although I'm not sure if the GDOS printer driver can do 8.5 x 14 also. Never printed anything yet, on 8.5 x 14 paper. The table length limit appears to be based around the page break.) I'm not aware of any indicator by Callig as to how much text can be included in a table before you reach the vanishing point. I think the best thing to do, if you have a long table to print, would be to break up your table over pages, making sure that none of the pages contain a full amount of data right up to the page break limit. To play it safe, maybe stay X lines (in a sense, since you're in Graphic Text mode) away from your page break and use the same number of lines in each table so they will be consistent. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 27 Tue May 11, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 20:03 EDT John, Yes, do you think a BJ driver with a resoloution of 360x260dpi is possible? John E. Gniewkowski Editor, GEnieLamp ST ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 29 Tue May 11, 1993 L.BUDNICK [Lorne] at 22:33 EDT Mel, Thanks for the response regarding the table function. At least I know that what I have been experiencing is not just with my copy of the software. I also could not make the text reappear. I have done as you suggested making multiple tables for each page of text. I have not experimented with exactly how many lines of text will successfully be accepted prior to the page break, but I do know that I have experienced the problem when trying to include all of the text up to the page break. I think I will go back a play around with it one line at a time until I reach the point where text disappears. Hopefully this will be consistent from page to page. All I need to do is find the time to get to it. :^) Perhaps there will soon be some feedback from the CodeHeads in this regard. Lorne.... Tuesday May 11, 1993 09:26:36 p.m. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 30 Wed May 12, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 05:42 EDT Lorne, I'm sure that there's some kind of a limit to the number of lines in a table, but I haven't tested to find out how many. If you're going to create very complicated tables, it may be better to use a DTP program. You'll have a lot more flexibility. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 31 Sat May 15, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 23:45 EDT Spreadsheets are also _very_ good at handling large tables, tho they typically don't have the best printed output. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 32 Sat May 22, 1993 T.CARMAN [Tom Carman] at 17:20 EDT I am using a Turbo 25 accelerator board from Fast Technology in my Mega ST4. I could never go back. I have noticed intermittent problems with Calligrapher 3 (also happened with Calligrapher 2), however. If I am running at 25mhz and try to print more often than not I will get a message that the program could not load the printer driver. If I reboot and switch to 8mhz, run the program and print all is fine. I have noticed similar problems with other GDOS based programs. If this is speed related, do TT owners have a similar problem when running GDOS based software or is this possibly a conflict with the onboard caching in the T25 board? On another note I have had problems with the intelligent quotes in Calligrapher 3. When using Zurich 12 point and inserting an intelligent quote with the Control-2 command, before a phrase, I get the quote mark that should end the phrase. At the end of the statement I press Control-2 again and get a straight up/down quote mark on screen. When I print this I used to get the correct intelligent quotes, but more recently I have been getting the exact opposite (the end-quote mark at the beginning and vice/versa). By the way, I notice that when I change the font to another typeface the quotes appear correctly on screen. This is also true when I use Zurich at another type size. I wonder if one of the Codeheads could respond as to whether you are aware of these problems and what fixes might be in the offing. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 33 Sun May 23, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:45 EDT Tom Carman, I don't know anything about your problem with the Turbo 25. My assistant, Tomas, uses a T-25 and has not reported a problem. Which printer driver are you using? Perhaps there's an alternate driver that doesn't have the problem. There is no such problem on the TT. Regarding intelligent quotes, it appears that the quote characters contained in the 12pt Zurich screen font are incorrect. The opening smart quote appears as a closing quote and the closing one appears as straight quote marks. This appears only in the 12pt screen font and I assume it could be fixed by editing the font file. The quotes print out correctly on the printer. If you're getting the opposite, look for a lone smart quote in your document. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 34 Mon May 24, 1993 BAREFOOT [Brad Cox] at 13:12 EDT Hi All! Is there any way to include an abbreviation in the Replace field of search and replace? Is there any way to change fonts or search for text that is in a certain font? I'm changing the font in an entire document and need a way for my bullets (in ornaments font) to change back after changing the rest of the text. I've been using abbreviations to change occurrences of Y back to ornaments, but I'd really like to automate the process with a global search and replace. Brad @ BAREFOOT ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 35 Mon May 24, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 19:33 EDT Brad, You can't direct "replace" occurences with an abbreviation, but you can do it in a two-step operation by replacing the occurence with the name of the abbreviation. If you then replace them one at a time, you can just hit Control-A after the replace to insert the abbreviation. As for changing the text in the entire document, it's a bit late now, but if you had used tag styles for all text, it would have been a simple one step operation. I know you're working on a 500-page document. You probably know more about Calligrapher than we do now -- at least you know what you'd do next time around. We finally got MIDI Spy out the door and I was real happy with the way Calligrapher handled the manual. It's full of references to various page numbers in the contents, body, and index, all handled (pun intended) by the Indexer. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 36 Mon May 24, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 23:14 EDT Brad, As John mentioned, you could have the Search and Replace option search for a string and replace the string with the abbreviation, but then you'd have to hit Control-A to expand each abbreviation. (Pasting from the clipboard, after finding the string, would be about the same number of steps.) A Codekeys macro would help to automate things here. One thought I had was to use Spelling Sentry, which has a robust abbreviation expansion facility, to spell check your document. First you do a global Search and Replace in Callig, replacing this with that. Then you create your expansions in Spelling Sentry and tie these to the abbreviations present in your file. When SS comes to the abbreviation, it will expand it to whatever you want lickety-split. But you would have to save the Callig. doc. out as ASCII, to import it into SS. If you haven't used Tags in your document, changing the font will basically be a matter of highlighting and specifying the new font. (Wouldn't be a bad idea to make liberal use of tags at this point.) You could try hacking the font designators in a .cal file via Edhak, or saving out in RTF, hacking the font designations and importing, but this would require extensive knowledge of the Callig and RTF file format, as well as a lot of trial and error. No fun. I don't know of any way to search for a font. The Search and Replace function is very robust in allowing you to search for font attributes and a host of other stuff, but not a font itself. Guess that's why they created tags. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 37 Tue May 25, 1993 BAREFOOT [Brad Cox] at 12:48 EDT John & Mel- Yea, I'm really happy with the Indexer so far too, except I wish there was a way to read the handles list back in. I've got that Control A bit down, I just wanted to automate the process. As it turns out, I don't have to replace anything, I just defined the abbreviation as the Y that shows up from the font change, position the cursor and control A away! The type-ahead is great for this when they are on successive lines or every other line. Thanks! I have been doing a little bit of fooling around with my set-up lately and find that if I do not have G+Plus installed while I am running Calligrapher it seems to print more reliably. I have not eliminated the problems entirely, but it is much better. The problems seem to arise more on the second or third print job, not the first. I'll keep fiddling on the theory that it is a software conflict. I took your advice about editing the font. I found the font editor included with version 2.87, ran it, loaded the font, and couldn't find a left hand or right hand double quote, only a vertical quote. I then guessed that the program was creating the intelligent quotes from single quote marks paired together. I found them, made the necessary corrections and all is working as it should. BTW is there any chance that smart-quotes might be incorporated as a configuration option, not requiring a special key combination ala MS Word and others? How many rulers are there and how far apart are they? I've used up to 4 or 5 rulers at a time, in a doc., but didn't notice any problems when backspacing. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 43 Fri May 28, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:34 EDT Ken, This seems too obvious, so maybe I'm missing something, but have you tried just starting the headings/subheadings at the left margin and then hitting Alt-Z (Indent Paragraph) for the paragraphs? This will cause each paragraph to have a left margin at the tab setting you chose, with headings/subheadings at the left margin. One thing you can do with the rulers, after they're all established, is to turn them off so they're not visible while editing. If you keep the various ruler configs handy in Tag Fkeys, then even if the ruler display is Off, you'll just be able to press the Fkey where you want the new ruler and be assured that it's now in place. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 44 Fri May 28, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 13:53 EDT Calligrapher handles redraws on a priority basis. If you perform a lot of activity on your keyboard, the cursor and the area immediately around it will keep up with you but the full screen will only redraw when you pause long enough for it to catch up. If your page is full of rulers, some of them may not draw right away, depending on your activity. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 50 Sat May 29, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 00:51 EDT Ken, Oh, o.k., now I see. Well, you could either do as you suggested, have a ruler assigned as a tag for the heading/subheadings and another for indented paragraphs. Inserting them at the appropriate points. A definite two step process for building each heading/subheadings. Or you could simply eliminate any automatic paragraph indentation by keeping the little arrow doo-dad (for paragraph indenting) flush with the left margin and just hit the Tab key for each paragraph. Painless headings/subheadings, but a press of the Tab key required for every paragraph. Which method you use will depend on how many headings/subheadings you have in your document, versus paragraphs. *** Late flash I just realized that you could greatly simplify suggestion #1 by either using the clipboard or the Abbreviation facility. In other words, create two rulers on your document for your heading/subheading with a little space between them for the actual heading/subheading. Make the first ruler's left margin and paragraph indent icons flush and the second ruler with the paragraph indent over to the right however you want it. Now highlight everything, the two rulers and the space in between them and save the whole kit and kaboodle to the clipboard. You can now either paste the whole kit into your document where needed, or (if you make frequent use of the clipboard) you can assign the whole beast to an abbreviation. I like to use simple one letter abbreviations, like "h". Now, whenever you want a heading/subheading, just type "h", press Control-A and there she is, viola! And the second ruler gets you back to the default paragraph indentation setting. A Codekeys macro can make selection of the Hide/Show Rulers option a breeze, to turn 'em On and Off. Hope this helps. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 51 Sat May 29, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 03:07 EDT Ken Van, Yes, you need a lot of rulers to get your subheadings over to the left margin. Assigning Codekeys macros in Callig, which uses plenty of its own hotkeys, brought back the thought of how to generate a nice reference sheet of Callig's hotkeys. Just run EDITKEYS.PRG (one of Callig's utilities) and point it at Callig. It will load the current hotkeys from the prg and present them in a scrollable window. Now click on 'Document' and save out a text file with all the hotkeys. Use your favorite file sorting utility to put it in alphabetical order and you now have a nifty cheat sheet for reference when assigning Codekeys macros, so there won't be a conflict between Codekeys' and Callig's. John Koller ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 77 Fri Jun 04, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 04:21 EDT Ken Van, The Atari Laser Printers require over one meg of free memory just to create a virtual page in memory. This is true of any program that prints to the SLM. The memory usage allowable for AUTO programs and ACCs varies from program to program, but I've found that usually you'll need about 2.0-2.5 meg free before running Calligrapher or Calamus if you plan to print to an SLM. A bit of experimentation will pin it down. Unfortunately, the SLM GDOS printer driver supplied with Calligrapher doesn't recover very gracefully from insufficient memory problems. John Koller, Please call our office to find out about re-registering your used copy of Calligrapher. THanks.... --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 83 Thu Jun 10, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 05:16 EDT Lou, There is a strange quirk in Calligrapher with tabs and point sizes. It affects the calculation of positioning for redraws and gives the kind of results you mentioned. The problem occurs when a line contains a tab character that is in a higher point size than the rest of the text on that line. If you place the cursor at the beginning of a 12pt line of text, set the point size to 18, and enter a Tab, you'll see the problem occur. Look in your document for a Tab character of a larger size, remove it and reenter it in the correct pt size. Or select an entire area, if it's all supposed to be all the same size, and set the point size. This problem is in all versions of Calligrapher. There must be some other reason why it's just occurring now for you. I've also had the effect of characters jumping up and down when typed in. It seems to have something to do with super- and sub-scripts, apparently some sort of residual information even after the special scripts have been edited out. Must be for people who edit other people's documents but don't want to do the actual deleting of text. Just want to show someone else what they think should be struck. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 87 Thu Jun 10, 1993 D.CHARTER [Duane] at 22:40 EDT Mel, You are correct on why strikeout is used. There is a group of us composing a document. When somebody makes a change he EMAILs it to the others for review. We use strikeout for deletions and bold for insertions. If approved the changes are made and we end up with a new revision. If this is how Calligrapher works, I believe it is a problem with the program. The reason I bought the program was because the different users have MACs and PCs...RTF being the method of compatiblity. Fortunately I can see the strikeout on the screen and then take it to work for printing on the PC. Duane Note: This was not meant as a flame to a good program. I like Calligrapher, and I am not sure yet if there is a way to print strikeout. I shall see. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 88 Fri Jun 11, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 01:48 EDT John, Thanks for the information on tab character point sizes. I will have to look into it. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks. --Lou T.-- Written: Friday, June 11, 1993 01:42 a.m. EDT ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 89 Fri Jun 11, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 06:19 EDT I've just gotten into the 2-key commands and other keyboard commands (never read to the back of the manual), and it's like a free upgrade. Some of the 2- key commands don't produce anything on-screen, and some that show on-screen don't print. These - ij, IJ, >=, <=, |-, and .. - don't work in one of these ways. This evening I ran into a problem something like the one I commented on here today. I was working on a double-spaced document, and part of the time my text showed up in what was supposed to be the blank line, and I even had a duplicate of the active line in that area for a while. Sometimes the cursor was in that area, too. It was difficult to get the cursor located properly with the mouse or cursor keys. It seemed to occur mainly (entirely) between particular rulers. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 90 Fri Jun 11, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:54 EDT Mel, You have the right idea on strikeouts. Sometimes it's important, say with revisions of contracts, constitutions for organizations, and the like, to show what the original language was for comparison with the proposed language that is to voted on. If you want to distribute the document in that form, it's important for the struckout text to print. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 91 Fri Jun 11, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:44 EDT Ken, Off the top of my head, I would use the Key Selector pak and see if the special characters denoted by those key combos are in the font you're working in and to be sure that any of the keystrokes aren't being grabbed by Codekeys (e.g. either Control-I or Control-J isn't being used in a Codekeys macro). Is that problem of text showing up in the wrong line caused by the screen redraws, or did it stay there for quite some time? I think the screen redraws automatically if you don't type anything for a second or two, so any duplicate text should disappear by then. Yeah, if you need to print strikeout text, you may find this feature strikes out. (I know, bad pun ). - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 92 Fri Jun 11, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 16:59 EDT I wasn't aware that strikeouts did not appear in the printouts. That's not very friendly. It sounds like something to do with the printer driver. Ken Van, The purpose of the 2-key commands is to provide a means for inserting characters which normally can't be typed from the keyboard. But a 2-key command won't do anything if the character it represents is not in the character set. Try doing "IJ" or the other ones in "Text Only" mode and you'll see them appear. There are a lot of quirks in Calligrapher, or any word processor. Keep trying and you'll find them all. I don't see them as often as I did when first learning it. I don't know if I subconsciously avoid them or if I just use the program in a different way. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 93 Fri Jun 11, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 18:58 EDT John, A little more on my text and cursor between the lines problem. I've discovered that the rulers for the two sections of my text that are giving this problem are weird. A copy of each will occasionally appear behind and one line below the real one. Remember that I'm using double spacing. I wonder if the phantom text between the lines is related to the phantom ruler. Either the real ruler or the phantom one can be selected (reverses) in either case, but the phantom ones always stay half behind the real one. Later.... I noticed that the rulers for strange areas were accidentally set for single-spacing, unlike the rest of the document, although they appeared to be double-spaced. I corrected that and also adjusted the left margin setting. When I edited the text in those areas, the problem was gone. I guess I don't need help, but this might be something of interest to the developers. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 94 Sat Jun 12, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 00:55 EDT Ken Van, Do these ruler and text redraw problems happen when you boot with nothing installed? John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 95 Sat Jun 12, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 08:37 EDT Mel, I'll have to do a test of both screen and printing with the Key Selector on the special characters and let you know. BTW, I was using the file generated by the EDIT2KEY.PRG. I've reorganized that file and the one from EDITKEYS.PRG, and made a nice printout of each to keep handy while working (instead of the manual). The text problem persisted even when I moved the slider to cause a redraw. The situation came and went. The strange thing was that the ruler had gotten set to single space somehow, although I was doing everything double-spaced, but the problem area came out double-spaced, anyway (with duplicate text, and occasionally the cursor, between the lines). John, Part of the problem is figuring out what's a quirk and what isn't. ;^) So apparently some of the 2-key characters aren't available in all character sets. The ones that didn't work for me aren't too common. I think the ij combo is used only in Dutch (it means the same as y, as in Meijer = Meyer), which I occasionally use. You can ask Wilfred about that, too. Would you like a copy of the files to include on the disk? Re: redraw. It only happened the last few days, but sounded like what the other user reported. It went away now, as mentioned. Hard to check for if it isn't happening anymore. I'll see what I can do if it comes back, but I'd prefer it didn't. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 96 Sun Jun 13, 1993 B.MCCORKLE at 00:06 EDT I received Calligrapher 3 about two weeks ago and I am still in the process of getting the 'feel' of it. I have noticed that if I try to load a chapter.lst file or a *.out file, Cal will try to load and then crash. I tested other file types (wp, txt) and was told the file was the wrong type. Is there any way to set default paths for Calligrapher? My Calfiles and graphic files are on a different drive/directory than the Cal program and I'd like the correct drive/folder to be there when I import graphics or open a file. Presently I have a desktop icon which is a read only default.cat which loads Calligrapher. This helps the cal file path but graphics will first open the drive/directory where Cal.prg resides. Also, is there any way to change the date format on the insert date function? Brian ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 97 Sun Jun 13, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 00:28 EDT Brian, A chapter.lst file is an internal Callig file and isn't intended for loading into the program via the Open command. Callig accesses it, as needed, when you use the Chapter Linking feature. The .OUT outline files must be loaded with the Outliner window open. It took me awhile to notice, but when you open the Outliner, the GEM menu bar changes and under "File" you can use "Load" to load an .out file. There's no way to set up default paths for Callig, although once you set the fsel to another path (other than the one Callig ran from), Callig will remember this new path the next time you load another file. Ditto with the graphics. You must set the fsel, when you choose Insert Graphic, to your pic path the first time. With my wp files, what I do is use Hotwire to pass a filename to Callig on a programmable commandline so that the prg runs and loads the file in one swoop. Drag and drop (as you described), on the newer TOS's, would accomplish the same thing. And no, there's no way to change the date format. So I started using Codekeys to insert times and dates since it gives you a lot of flexibility in configuring how your time or date will appear. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 98 Sun Jun 13, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 21:12 EDT Does Calligrapher 2 work on the Falcon? You should run in either ST High compatibility mode or the TT medium-like mode (which is 16-color, 80-column, no double line [love these descriptive video modes...NOT]). I never specifically tested Calligrapher 2, but I don't think there's anything that would prevent it from working on the Falcon. Calligrapher 3 definitely works. John, since I just got a Falcon can I ask a question in order to do right by you-I have been loading Calligrapher from a floppy at work because the license says "one computer at one time"? which is of course a pain but I am trying to be honest-is it illegal to load on my Falcon hard disk if I only use one computer at one time? (it would be quite difficult to use both computers at once-it is hard enough for me to use one at once some times :>)) This is getting silly but my question is a serious one to me-do I make any sense-obviously the answer is to buy two copies of Cal which I eventually plan to do but am I acting above board-till then? Sincerely, Bill Hartshorne ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 104 Sun Jun 20, 1993 BHARTSHORNE at 21:01 EDT Don't anyone misinterpret what I am going to say because with no qualms whatsoever Calligrapher is my wp of choice and I have tried the others including Redacteur, but in a way it is too bad that Cal's authors wouldn't consider Speedo Gdos or that it wasn't out sooner. I got it with my Falcon and it really impresses me. Bill ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 105 Mon Jun 21, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 01:30 EDT Bill Hartshorne, I see nothing wrong with your keeping multiple copies of Calligrapher installed on different machines as long as only one is being used at a time. I appreciate your honesty. The Calligrapher author has not stated that he won't add SpeedoGDOS compatibility. I believe he's currently working some other job. Life as an Atari developer is no better in the UK. If the Falcon begins being sold in real quantities to customers new to Atari, it's feasible that sales could pick up for Atari developers everywhere. We'd then see a great surge in software support on all levels. Stranger things have happened. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 106 Wed Jun 23, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:16 EDT Charles, John & Mel, After spending altogether too much time playing with the Callig demo, and especially after seeing the CodeHead price reductions, I have decided that Calligrapher may be just what I need; it is obviously very powerful. I have a couple of questions first. What is the Calligrapher Gold extension? Do you have a deal (even beyond your price cuts) if I order 5 or 10 font packs at once? Now to the harder part. The screen display leaves a little to be desired, since it uses older-style GDOS screen fonts. Somewhere (probaboly in the msgs here, which I have read and reread) someone mentions that a way to get better screen displays at sizes of, say, 36 pts would be to add a 36-pt GDOS screen font to the Callig font list. Are these available? I saw none among the GDOS fonts on GEnie that would include sizes that aren't the standard ones (12, 18, 24 and so on). I realize right away that my comment above is misleading. The display *at the screen fonts' designated sizes* is excellent. I'm referring to Callig's inability to show resized characters properly unless they fall at the matching sizes for the screen fonts. Somehow, I had gotten the impression that some of the fonts, at least, were using vector methods for the screen. (I realize all of them are vector fonts for printing.) Fromm the demo and the messages, I also figured that rulers could be customized to the extent of appearing with (for example) the justified-text symbol already on them; is this the case? I may be missing an entire procedure here. I was not happy to hear that the developer has stopped work on Callig. CodeHead doesn't have access to the code, is that correct? Does this mean the current version is the last? And can I assume that you'll take an e-mail order via credit card? Thanks. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 107 Wed Jun 23, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:57 EDT Al, The Gold Extension is a collection of Paks for Callig. The Thesaurus, Grammar Checker, Label Printer, Barcoder, Indexer, Auto Save, Formula Editor and FlexText text effects. I believe it also includes a free URW font disk of your choice. Four of the point sizes have bitmap files on disk that are used for the screen display, although all printing is vectored, 10, 12, 18 and 24 points. The rest are generated by vectors. To view the vectors in all of their glory, be sure to have 2 megs free before you run Callig, otherwise the depiction of the fonts is blocky and then the Quick/Full scale option comes into play. I'm not sure if, on version 3, that extra GDOS screen sizes can be added since an assign.sys file isn't used anymore. There is a font path in the setup prg from where the fonts are loaded. I wonder if it could be as easy as putting the font there and making sure the font id matches? Yes, the symbol for justification shows up on the rulers. They're called Align symbols in the ruler dialog. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 108 Wed Jun 23, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 11:45 EDT Al, The Gold Extension is simply an upgrade package from Professional to Gold. It is now priced the same as the difference in price between the two products. Originally, we had a price break down to $25 if you bought more than 3 fonts. Now the price has been cut to $25 for even single orders. So far, we do not have any discount below that. Our license fee is a flat fee per disk, so I don't think we can afford to cut the price any more unless we can renegotiate the license fee. Regarding the screen fonts, you will get vector screen fonts if you have at least 2 meg and a hard disk. If memory gets too low (I don't know the exact amount needed before running Cal), the screen fonts won't be scaled. There's also a setting for this. So a 34-pt screen display should look very good unless you're low on memory. My previous comments on this were relating to _small_ sizes. For instance, a 14-pt screen display will not look as good if you don't have a 14-pt bitmap font (especially in ST Medium). This is because Calligrapher doesn't use any hinting and vector scaling at low resolutions is not that accurate. To create alternate-sized bitmap fonts, one could use Fontz or the font editor that comes with Calligrapher. But the jaggies would have to be straightened out. I've never spent any time doing this, but I'd imagine you could create a large bitmap font (50+) and the down-scaling for other sizes would be pretty good, only requiring minor tweaks. Rulers can be cut and pasted just like any item. To default to justified text, you can use a number of methods. You can create a deault-load document with only a justified ruler in it. Then any pasted ruler will be a copy of the same. Or you could save the ruler as a tag style or abbreviation for easy access with one or two keystrokes. I don't know that the developer has "stopped work" on Calligrapher. I just know that he may need to do other things besides Atari work to feed himself. I wouldn't say that the current version is the last. Time will tell. Yes, you can order Calligrapher through E-Mail. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 109 Wed Jun 23, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 20:34 EDT John and Mel, Thanks for the explanations. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 111 Thu Jun 24, 1993 R.GREGORY4 [Rob] at 19:37 EDT Is there a simple way with Calligrapher Gold to have each new line on a double- spaced page numbered (as in Word Perfect)? Each new page must begin with the number 1 to the left of the margin. This is essential for the transcripts that we need to print. Thanks, Rob ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 112 Thu Jun 24, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 22:31 EDT Rob, Here's how I'd attack your problem. It assumes that your text is all in one point size and typeface and that you have only one ruler at the top of your document. First, drag your right margin all the way over to about 1/4". (Your formatting will look very strange, but ignore it for now). Then double-click on the ruler at about 3/8" and select New Column. Now drag the right margin of your second column over to 8" (or wherever you want it). You'll now have a skinny column on the left and the bulk of your text on the right. Double-click on the ruler within the first column and select double-spacing. Then place the cursor at the top of the first column and number your lines with a carriage return after each number until you reach the bottom of the page. After the last number insert a column break. Now select the entire first column including the column break and copy it to the clipboard. You can then go to the beginning of each page and paste in a copy of your numbers column. If you need to insert more text anywhere within the document, the formatting will get all messed up, but this is the only "easy" way I can think of to do what you want. Another $25 to $75 for physical dongle protection would've been fine by me. Might I send in the original disk(s), manuals, boxes, etc. to somehow register the package, or must I buy anew? Secondly, are there any plans for Calligrapher to eventually support Speedo GDOS? The combination of the two would be advantageous. I'm aware of Calligrapher's incorporation of its own "GDOS," but having tried and printed with both, I'd still like to see Speedo support in Calligrapher. By the way no cricism of Calligrapher-I've loved it since I first got it-but I am also very impressed with Speedo, and in honesty it makes Wordflair II (which i had all but discarded) sing. Can some one respond to this statement made by the program's author; Charles Smeton: "To: R.STEGELMANN/O-ZONE, Codehead Technologies has indicated that Calligrapher 2/3 can only be used with drivers from the original GDOS. STraight FAX! is supplied with a driver built from the original Atari GDOS driver builder library archive, i.e. STFAX.SYS. We can not guarantee any degree of compatability with Calligrapher 2/3 and the FSM/Font GDOS driver or the Speedo GDOS drivers supplied with STraight FAX!. Please also remember that Calligrapher 3 bypasses the normal GDOS system and uses its own method to access the printer drivers. The STFAX.SYS GDOS driver is built according to Atari's standards, it should work with Calligrapher 3 assuming Calligrapher 3 works with standard Atari GDOS printer drivers from the original version of GDOS. It is possible that Working Title has modified their GDOS drivers in a way that is non-standard. The original GDOS drivers had a limitation of 128 points in a polygon, the FSM/Font GDOS and Speedo GDOS drivers have a limit of 1023 points in a polygon. If the drivers supplied with Calligrapher 3 have been modified to support more complex polygons, this may explain some of the problems you have described." Are these staements correct? If so I wonder if someone from Codehead might get together with Charles to modify or reconstruct one of the drivers so that it will work correctly. Thanks. I have a couple of oddities to report, even before I finish installing this (Love that Geneva! Just bop over to another window and run Aladdin....) First, the Read Me Now! sheet says that when Callig is ordered directly from you, five disks are sent, instead of the usual four. No, that's not correct. Second, the manual is clearly out of date. I *know* there is a supplemental pack of pages that the user is supposed to insert into the manual, and I will gladly do that, and happily read all the addendums. And I realize you guys are the distributors and not the OEMs for this thing (and considering that limitation, you do a great job of support). But buying a premium product with an out-of-date main manual -- especially one that has extensive sections referring to processes that are clearly superfluous or just plain confusingly at odds with the way the software works now -- is a little disappointing. Third, the authors of the main manual must have had a different kind of experience with IBM-compatible PCs than the rest of us have had. On page 51 of the manual, they state: "The ST can read text files from IBM-PC formatted 3.5 inch floppy disks, although it cannot save to them." This is quite a puzzle. Fourth, in the preceding sentence the authors might have made a little better use of Calligrapher's grammar checker. Hypens are missing there (and elsewhere) in the manual. Maybe this is an example of British style, which is fairly loose with some of the rules we Nurth Amurricans abide by, but it's not a good sign. I recently tested THREE stand-alone grammar checkers for use at our newspaper office. I simply ran their own documentation through them, and canned all three when they failed their own tests. If the authors of expensive PC software don't believe in using their own product, I don't either. That's not a comment about Callig, by the way. It's obviously very powerful, and the manual is very thorough. I'll be using it for a major Atari-related documentation project, starting tonight, and I haven't felt this good about a software purchase in years. But I don't see any point in failing to be honest about my first impressions of the manual and the mistake in the Read Me Now! sheet. I have been using for about a year now, and so far have been pretty happy with it. John, >We can always dream about a day where there are lots of new Atari owners. "I have a dream...." Of course, I would never think of going that far to make a customer happy, would I? ===Stealth Clerk=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 131 Thu Jul 15, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:16 EDT Al, Glad to see you got your Cal Gold. Sounds like you like the program so far. I'm not surprised. The manual is actually pretty good, but I agree it has some shortcomings. I thought the captions, as on p. 219, with no spaces between words were novel. I'm sure the guys will set you up with the supplement soon, if you didn't get it. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 132 Thu Jul 15, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:37 EDT Stealth, You'd have to get past the guard. He's keeping my copy of Callig under close watch. It's a thing of beauty, guys. And powerful. Great job. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 133 Thu Jul 15, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 18:01 EDT Ken Van, Been sitting in the sun this afternoon reading the manual. The power of this thing is incredible. I'd suggest that the 'Heads could advertise the flexibility even more than they do now. Nothing comes close. Unhappily, the screen display is second-rate, but the print quality is outstanding. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 134 Thu Jul 15, 1993 H.WOLFE1 [Harvey] at 21:42 EDT I have been recently exchanging Email with John Eidsvoog and he suggested that I outline my problem in the Calligrapher topic. I have finally decided to buy Calligrapher if it is possible to run it while keeping some version of GDOS installed (I need GDOS for Gemvelope, Kspread and Superbase). John said that he doesn't recall any reports of problems with FONTGDOS and said "there are no known problems with GDOS/G+Plus and Calligrapher once you've added the correct screen device numbers." He also took a look at my ASSIGN.SYS file and suggested one revision which I incorporated before performing my final tests. Hopefully, my ASSIGN.SYS file is now OK. Since I do not have Calligrapher, I tried the next best thing, the Calligrapher 3 demo. I performed the tests on my TT, which has 4 megs of ST Ram and 4 megs of TT Ram and I ran the tests in TT medium resolution. I also have TOS 3.06 I have encounted some very strange problems in my tests and I am hoping that someone with a similar system and similar programs can let me know if they can duplicate my results. First, I ran the Calligrapher 3 demo without any varient of GDOS installed and I had no problems. It worked with all my DA's and TSR's. Secondly, I ran the Calligrapher 3 demo with absolutely no desk accessories and with one of the GDOS varients as my only AUTO folder program. Here are the results. 1. With either FONTGDOS or FSMGDOS, the demo displays an alert box that it is scaling logo3.img (this alert box is never removed) and then it stops doing anything, i.e. it never draws the white background for the window and it never seems to puts anything into the window. Since print preview works, though, the text must be there. It just isn't visible. However, then it doesn't remove the print preview box. Finally. it also locks up the computer if I then quit Calligrapher and attempt to run it again. 2. With GDOS 1.1 and 1.4, the Calligrapher demo works with GDOS installed. Prior to that change, it had never worked with with GDOS 1.1 installed. Unfortunately, further problems which I will detail below arose when I attempted to run my normal configuration. When I added my usual complement of AUTO folder programs and DA's, I discovered that with GDOS 1.1 the Calligrapher demo wouldn't run. Then I began eliminating DA's and TSR's. Finally I determined that, at least in TT medium, the Calligrapher demo will not run if STalker and STeno are both loaded and if the option to use GDOS monospaced fonts has been selected in STalker. Once I turned off this option, the Calligrapher demo ran. Unfortunately, when I selected "quit" the demo crashed back to the desktop with two bombs. Moreover, when I performed additional tests with some of my DA's installed, I encountered more problems. First, the EdHak DA will not open its window properly. Furthermore, version 3.4a of Multidesk displays the message "unable to open workstation." This is the first time I have ever encountered that particular message. Besides, I thought I remembered John saying in the Multidesk topic that it could only occur with GDOS 1.4 and Multidesk 3.4. When I performed the same tests with GDOS 1.4, I discovered that GDOS 1.4 also causes Multidesk Deluxe to display the message "unable to open workstation". It also causes some quirks in the Calligrapher display. Moreover, if I run GDOS 1.4 as my only AUTO folder program and Multidesk as my only DA, then the computer crashes during the boot cycle as soon as it tries to load Multidesk. Finally, I tried running my usual configuration with the demo of G+Plus loaded. Everything was fine until I was in Calligrapher. Then EdHak would not open its window and Multidesk again displayed the alert box saying "unable to open workstation." However, if I deleted STalker or STeno from my list of DA's, then EdHak and Multidesk behaved normally. If anyone would like to attempt to duplicate some of the problems that I encountered, just run the following programs on a TT with TOS 3.06 in medium resolution. in the AUTO folder G+CALDEM.PRG (TT version - 10,452 bytes) Desk accessories Multidesk 3.4a EdHak 3.01 Stalker 3.02 STeno, either version 2.00 Finally run Calligrapher and then try to access either Multidesk or Edhak. The same problems occur if only one of EdHak and Multidesk are loaded. If you can duplicate my problems with the G+CALDEM.PRG, I'd also be interested in hearing whether they also occur with the regular G+PLUS.PRG. Thanks, Harvey Wolfe ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 135 Fri Jul 16, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 00:58 EDT Harvey, I'm not trying to plug a competing product, but I'm sure Charles and John won't mind if I simply mention that NVDI, which has its own version of GDOS, may solve your problem. With NVDI on my TT, Callig runs fine, and you may be able to run the other applications without a problem. (Personally, I could not live without Warp 9, the "other" accelerator. But there are times when NVDI can be handy.) Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 136 Fri Jul 16, 1993 H.WOLFE1 [Harvey] at 18:11 EDT I just realized that I left one crucial point out of my previous message. The reason for the message was that I am hoping that someone can suggest some way of circumventing the problems I encountered. I also hope that there are some people out there who have a TT and who also have Calligrapher and some versions of GDOS, since they are obviously in the best position to tell me whether I am encountering a problem that is limited to the Calligrapher demo. Finally, I was also wondering if the full version of G+PLUS might work OK, even though I encountered problems with the demo version. Thanks again, Harvey Wolfe ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 137 Fri Jul 16, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 22:24 EDT A neat little feature of Callig came to mind when I ran a bunch of tests last night. When you make selected text bold or italic, Callig uses the actual bold or italic faces, if available, instead of merely bolding or italicizing the roman face. That's an excellent feature. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 138 Fri Jul 16, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 22:43 EDT Al, I told you you'd like it. It has features I haven't used yet, and I'm very pleased. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 139 Sat Jul 17, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 10:08 EDT Speaking of italics, I'm using the monofont (whatever it's called) because I think my editor would not prefer proportional, since it's hard to count words. When I try to italicize a block, the block jumps a little, but doesn't get italicized on the screen. I don't know if it would print italicized. It works fine on proportional fonts. Is this normal? Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 140 Sat Jul 17, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 11:35 EDT Ken, If you don't have enough free ram to display the vector fonts, then yes, the Unitype font word will just jump a tad to one side, I guess to give Callig an indication that this italicized word needs a little more room on the line. But if you can view the vector fonts onscreen, then Unitype does show up italicized. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 141 Sat Jul 17, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 18:02 EDT Ken Van, It seems that the 10 and 12 point sizes of Unitype will not italicize onscreen. This may be due to a setting in the GDOS bitmap font files (FNT). I don't know. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 142 Sat Jul 17, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 19:59 EDT Another report on Callig. Initially, I was VERY disappointed in the screen display. I can't say that strongly enough. The thing ate grass, so to speak. But today a miracle happened. (OK, Al, cut the melodrama...) I played with all the fonts, creating files that each had one font in them at about 50 sizes, up to 100+ points, and allowed Callig to create disk caches for the fonts. (I had the cache size set at 9 megs, but I am sure that's about 8 megs more than I need!) I then assigned Callig 2 megs minimum of memory when running under Geneva. Whooptedoo! The vector screen fonts finally come through just fine. (Yes, I had the display setting in the proper mode all the time, but the amount of memory and/or the presence of the caches did the trick.) Ken, I have edited other writers' copy for 31 years, and I *prefer* proportional printing, since that is actually easier to read. Yep, easier to read. Do a test and you'll see. My editor at Fanfare Magazine (another of my three careers, sigh!) likes my Garamond just fine. I've used GeoWrite with its URW fonts for years, but am now switching to Callig (with its URWs, luckily). As for the italic showing up on screen in Unitype, yep, Mel is right and John, for the first time in a few years, is wrong. With 2 megs assigned to Cal (and with the caches at a god size, if that helps), the italic shows up nicely. I switched over to Cal just now and did it. If you have Easy Draw or one of the pd/shareware vector graphic editing prgs here on GEnie (the english version of My Draw comes to mind), it should be a cinch to load in the GEM file, do a flip and rotate and save it back out. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 145 Sun Jul 18, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 00:35 EDT Thanks Tomas and John. I was going to change my bootup setup to get more RAM until I read John's message. I've been underlining, but I guess I don't need to. Of course, it's a little hard to tell when things are italicized and when they aren't, but I may give it a try if I know it prints. Well, Al, I guess I'll have to try your advice on the memory and the font. I read somewhere that editors don't want manuscripts in proportional because it's too hard to count the words to estimate space. I'll give my man a call and see what he likes. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 146 Sun Jul 18, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 02:56 EDT Ken, Since Cal gives you a word count anyway, why not do a word count after writing the piece and then putting it at the top? As for the italics, I tried it again, and there it was. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 147 Sun Jul 18, 1993 H.WOLFE1 [Harvey] at 15:49 EDT > With NVDI on my TT, > Callig runs fine, and you may be able to run the other applications > without a problem. Al, thanks for the suggestion. It's an interesting idea. However, it just isn't worth it from my perspectice. I already have Warp 9 and NVDI costs about $70 or $80, i.e. almost as much as Warp 9 and Speedo GDOS combined, and not much less than Calligrapher. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 148 Sun Jul 18, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 16:50 EDT Al, I had 11 megs of free memory before running Calligrapher. I'll try freeing up some more to see if the italics will skew. (This is 12pt Unitype we're talking about, isn't it?) Ken Van, You can get a word count through "Show Info". Then you just have to get your editor to believe you. :^) John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 149 Sun Jul 18, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 20:03 EDT Al, Wow, I could give the editor a count and save him the trouble. He should like that. Sometimes we have tunnel vision, and overlook the obvious. I'll let you know what he says. John, Uh, I'm using 10pt. It seems to be large enough. I haven't yet tried Al's idea. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 150 Mon Jul 19, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:09 EDT I can't find a cache setting selection under Misc, so I can try Al's suggestion on italics. Where's that 256-meg TT RAM board I asked Santa for? Italics show up with 2 megs of memory set aside for Cal on my system, and 9 megs set aside for the disk cache. I doubt that the disk cache has anything to do with it, but that's the setting. Hmm, I just rechecked after switching back to Cal from Aladdin and I was using 14pt. In my system, all the sizes larger than 12pt show up as italic; 10pt and 12pt do not, no matter what; sizes smaller than 10pt show up, and 11pt shows up. So it's just the 10pt and 12pt sizes that don't display in italic. Sounds like a bug. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 152 Mon Jul 19, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:42 EDT Ken, The cache setting is in CALSETUP.PRG. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 161 Fri Jul 30, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 20:31 EDT Tomas or John, My margins for the document that printed as scattered characters were the same as another document that printed correctly (0 and 7-1/2). Moving them to 1 and 7-1/4 didn't help. I've discovered that page 2 of the problem document prints correctly, _and_ that when I preview, the margins go right to the edge of the page (virtual page?) on page 1 of the preview, but are recessed a bit on page 2. How can this be, when I have no ruler between the pages to change the margins? Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 162 Fri Jul 30, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 20:51 EDT John, Thanks. Click on OK to exit the dialog. Your document is now named Untitled. ^ note the period Now select SAVE...a document called UNTITLED. will be created. If you select CANCEL from the information box the period won't be inserted and you'll be prompted for a file name upon SAVE. Hardly earth-shattering, eh? This contains a document explaining Calligrapher's concepts of Virtual and Physical pages. Every Calligrapher user should check out this file. The document contains two-pages of text including everything I know about solving printing problems with Calligrapher. The third page contains a graphic showing how the pages fit together. My goal was to explain concisely and clearly how to set your Paper Size and Virtual Page size. I hope I've succeeded. Also included is PRNTGRID.CPK. Have you tried removing all other software? Gordon, Thanks for the quirk report. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 169 Mon Aug 02, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 20:24 EDT I've downgraded it from a quirk to a quark. And how do the cache filenames correspond to the typefaces created by the vectorization (scaling) on the screen? I keep finding new cache files. BTW, someone asked in another topic how Cal and AW compare in speed of scrolling. My tests, using large caches in each application, show Cal to be ahead. It seems pokey at times because of the way it scrolls, but the actual time to scroll through huge documents with a variety of fonts is smaller with Cal. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 172 Mon Aug 02, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 22:46 EDT John, Harlekin II and Cal 2 seem to be fighting over something. Regardless of any default settings I've set up so far in Harl II, Cal 2 crashes with 2 of the well known cute littles bombs back to the desktop. Delete H2 from the accs list, Cal 2 runs fine. Hmmm. Now that I think of it, there is a possibility that acc running under MDD, H2, and Cal2 combined is causing the problem. I sort of doubt it, since there is nothing strange and weird in the way of accs in the MDD list, a total of 4 at the moment. I'll specifically try H2 and Cal2 by themselves later tonight, and let you know if the run okay. I'm looking down the road for when the GE Soft memory board is repaired. I surely would like to rung H2 and the upcoming H3 with Cal 3 at the same time. If someone lurking out there can answer this question, please post. If it works, I'll upgrade. I installed C3 and everything went well until I tried entering data. All I see is the first letter in yellow and no subsequent letter even though I continue to type. The manual addendum says to install the program in High res., (I have a VGA monitor) which I did. I usually run in 256 color mode. I tried switching to 2 color mode and then the program works. Does it not run in 256 mode? ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 184 Sat Aug 07, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 18:01 EDT I can't answer for Calligrapher, but it seems to me you're putting the Falcon through more computational hoops than it needs. Why bother running a word processor in 256 color mode? That's just a ton more screen data to move around for no real benefit. Just IMHO of course. :) ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 185 Sat Aug 07, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 18:34 EDT Gordon, 1) The screen is bigger in 256 mode. 2) I don't want to have to switch resolutions if I switch over to C3 from something else, especially when multi-tasking. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 186 Sun Aug 08, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 04:24 EDT Flakes, No, Calligrapher does not run in 256 color mode. You'll find that there are a lot of programs which do not run in that mode. After the novelty wears off, you may find that you'll only switch to 256 colors when you do something that requires it. Screen size is not dependent on the number of colors. Changing the number of colors will not change the size of the screen. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 187 Sun Aug 08, 1993 J.WILSON103 [John] at 06:39 EDT I am having some problems with the Table cpk in Calligrapher. It is a simple table actually. I want it to look like this: A B C D E F with all the lines drawn etc. Once I invoke the table, all looks good excpet that the C & F are to the RIGHT of the appropriate verticle line, approximately 10 spaces, i.e. using the above: A B C D E F The verticle lines are still in the correct place. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 188 Sun Aug 08, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 09:58 EDT What Gordon said. A word processor doesn't need 256 colors, and Cal ain't got more than 4 anyway. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 189 Sun Aug 08, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 14:34 EDT John Wilson, Are you using spaces in your table? What is the exact text of block which defines your table? (Make sure to leave a space before each line so that GEnie doesn't reformat it.) Here are two possible combinations which work: A |B |C D |E |F A | B | C D | E | F Make sure to select "Centre" in the Table Dialog Box. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 190 Sun Aug 08, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 15:55 EDT John, You are correct, sir. Sorry about that. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 192 Fri Aug 20, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 02:47 EDT I guess this one's for all: Perhaps I'm missing something, but after finally locating and sending in my Calligrapher registration, I'm finally using the program, but am having trouble with output quality on the DeskJet. Is there some internal setting that more fully emulates the look of a vector font? Having used Speedo GDOS fonts in various programs for some time now, I'm finding Calligrapher a huge step forward in word processing, but a couple of steps backward on output quality. Any suggestions? -Richard Brown ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 193 Fri Aug 20, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:48 EDT Richard, There's quite an interesting description of the advantages of the various printer drivers in the manual. You may get better quality by using a different driver. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 194 Fri Aug 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 07:58 EDT Richard, Can you give us more information about what's wrong with the quality of your DeskJet output? John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 195 Fri Aug 20, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou @Machine] at 22:49 EDT John, I recently bought the HP LaserJet 4M. It is a postscript printer. Using the Calligrapher postscript driver I am able to print my Cal file to disk. Once the Cal postscript file created (DATA.PS) I can then dump it to my printer and I get wonderful results. My question is this, why not have a driver that will also print straight to the printer? Is there one? If not, will there be one? Thanks. --Lou T.-- Written: Thursday, August 19, 1993 11:42 p.m. EDT Also just a warning for others, the postscript file will only write to drive A and the file name will always be the same, so it will over write any other file you have created using this driver on that disk. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 196 Sat Aug 21, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 09:29 EDT Lou, It will write to the hard drive, not just to drive A:. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 197 Sat Aug 21, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 18:53 EDT Lou, The PostScript driver will write its file to whatever you've entered in the PostScript Driver Options box. If you want it to write the file to a different location, just change the filename. If you want to send the file directly to your printer, just select Printer Port or Serial Port, depending upon which port your printer is connected to. See page 30 of the Gold manual. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 198 Sat Aug 21, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 22:45 EDT Al and John. I've tried two different DeskJet drivers with similar results. The main things I'm seeing in the outputs: 1. Generally, the "Roman" weights of Calligrapher fonts are somewhere between Roman and Demi in weight, while the Speedo variants (Holland=Dutch=Times Roman more or less) are closer to Type 1 fonts at a Roman weight (as they would print, for example, to the DeskJet from PageStream). The added weight in both the Holland and Zurich faces next to their Speedo counterparts, Dutch and Swiss (again, more akin to Type 1) makes a regular text block seem heavy, lacking the "clean" look normally associated with vector fonts. 2. The Calligrapher fonts vary perceptibly in quality as sizes vary. Holland appears to consist of several different outlines as you move from 10 to 72 point. Serifs are not maintained accurately through the smaller sizes (10-40 point). While not appearing as crude as an enlarged bitmap, they also do not maintain a smoothness associated with a vector font. Distortions in curves (flat areas and ticks) are quite obvious at certain sizes (i.e. Holland at 40 point) but strangely, are not magnified, but rather change at larger sizes (Holland at 128 point). Perhaps this is a problem in the scaling algorithm? --- Performing identical tests with Speedo, granted that Dutch is not truly the Holland face, you still get the feeling of a single outline being scaled, without ticks, flat spots, or shape changes at any size. So far, I've only tested this on the DeskJet 500C. My laser and Bubble Jet results will be forthcoming. However, the versatility of the inkjet is often more apppropriate to non-DTP related tasks, not to mention more common in the user base. That's the why of my interest/concern. Some of this may be splitting hairs to some, but after being involved in typesetting and lithography for years, I've found the little things become a center of focus. John- samples will be mailed to you Monday. ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 199 Sun Aug 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:58 EDT Richard, Thank you for providing more detail than I'd ever hoped for. I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done to change the way Calligrapher outputs its fonts to the printer. Perhaps Calligrapher is just not up to the standards of your discerning eyes. If you find this to be unacceptable, please contact me in E-Mail and we can discuss a suitable resolution. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 200 Sun Aug 22, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 15:50 EDT R.Brown, I'm not using the PS driver at home (ahhm jest a dot matrixer heah), so I can't comment on the print quality vs. scaling issue. I can say from comparisons of the way Speedo GDOS and Cal print via an Epson driver that Cal's output is clearly better. But then I'm using the quad driver for Cal, and Speedo ain't got one of those. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 201 Sun Aug 22, 1993 MIKE-ALLEN [NM~SysOp] at 18:04 EDT in re Calligrapher vs. Speedo print quality. With my BJ-300 the Speedo output is definitely better. However, I don't know if this has to do with the font scaling engine or not. The BJ printer driver for Calligrapher is only 360x180 whereas the Speedo driver is 360x360. The scaled on-screen fonts are also better with speedo in ST Medium, but John has already explained the difference between hinted and non-hinted fonts. However, I find that Calligrapher is still heads and tails above whatever else is available for high-end word processing. I am still a satisified Calligrapher3 Gold customer! Mike Allen ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 202 Mon Aug 23, 1993 R.BROWN30 at 01:14 EDT John E.: Thanks for your comments. I think I'm going to do my next screenplay in Calligrapher anyway. After 120 pages of haggling, albeit a simple task for a word processor, maybe I'll see things differently. E-mail sometime soon. Congrats go to CodeHead: as Mike Allen points out, we all have reasons to be, at the very least, pleased with CodeHead. Perhaps I'll see you at Glendale... --Richard Brown ------------ Category 32, Topic 32 Message 203 Mon Aug 23, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:31 EDT Mike, Good point about the print drivers. As for the appearance of the fonts on screen, I've found some interesting aspects of Cal vs. Speedo. Some fonts at some sizes are scaled exceptionally well by Cal; others are not. UniType looks far better than the Speedo monospaced font, also. An oddity: Speedo's font cache takes effect on the first display of a document, but Cal's doesn't do much to help scrolling until the cache mechanism has seen the document. I just load it, scroll to the bottom and back up, and then the rest of the time I am working on that document the scrolling speed is very fast (faster than Speedo's). Al ------------
