I printed out the document with minimal problems (i.e., paper alignment ;). I opened that document today to use as a master for another, very similar document (margins and text boxes stayed in the same places {i.e., stayed "protected"}, but fonts changed from Times 50 to Swiss 50 {still 14pt}). when I printed it out the top of the page (left-side actually - it's 11 x 8.5) has the first couple lines all scrunched together. I tried moving the entire frame waaaaayyyy over to the right, thinking it must be getting squished/crowded by the margins, but to no avail...still, the first couple characters down the left side (top) of the page are scrunched together. What must I do to alleviate this particular problem? The aspirin, penicillin and Entex LA are working wonders for me, but didn't do a thing for Calamus. ;- ) Regards, Wally (the befuddled) of the North P.S. If you 'unprotect' a "protected" frame will it file charges against you? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 2 Thu Feb 18, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 08:20 EST Wally, there is no explanation why a CDK would change its fonts without your knowing. However, it is possible that a style list can get jumbled if you change the order in which fonts are loaded. The style list recognizes fonts by their loading position in a document. This is not the case in your example since you were loading a saved document, not a style list. As for the first lines getting squished... I think you will find that the text ruler might have inadvertently been set to relative instead of absolute. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 3 Thu Feb 18, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 09:13 EST Wally, are you using Calamus 1.09N? Send me the CDK but first look for a guilty ruler. :-) Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 4 Fri Feb 19, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 06:35 EST Howdy, Lou and Nathan, thanks for the tips. Best regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 5 Sat Feb 20, 1993 S.BLACKBURN [STEVE] at 12:13 EST I created a 2 page .CDK file (horizontal). I spent quite a while on it, and when I went to print the program crashed on me. I mean this is a crash like I've never seen before. The whole screen shows a strange pattern and there are no little bombs or anything else. The only other thing on the screen is the mouse pointer and a little area underneath it. Does anyone have an idea why this would happen? It's only on that one file... Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 10 Tue Feb 23, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 07:22 EST Howdy, Lou and Nathan - I figgered out my problem. I had a page with three identical columns... Now, I didn't draw them up separately, nosireebob. I grouped the frames, and made two extra real copies. This is where it gets whacko. Apparently, when I moved (or whatever) the original frame (the frame on the far left of the page) I accidentally resized it. This, in effect, cramped everything together on the left side of the frame (where the resizing of the grouped frame took place). Viola! Fixed. Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if this was the problem, so I tried to duplicate it just to be sure. It is very definitely duplicatable in this manner. I couldn't find anywhere to put my text rulers to 'absolute'. I looked, honest, but find, I could not. Thanks again for the quick helping hand. You's guys is great! Best regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 11 Tue Feb 23, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:34 EST Wally ... Glad to hear it. You couldn't change a text ruler from a "relative" designation to an "absolute" designation? It is in] the Text Module, in the Text Ruler Command Group 5.6.3. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 12 Tue Feb 23, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:40 EST Oops, I just realized Wally is using Calamus 1.09N. ;-) Go to the Text section, then to the 4th sub menu, Text Ruler. The second icon down is Absolute spacing. Activate your text ruller and then click on Absolute line spacing. Clicking on Relative line spacing will space your lines the size of the font PLUS the point designation you have entered. The default is 2 pts per line and 6 per paragraph I believe. If you select Absolute, you will start with 0 size for the font as only the spaxcing measurement you have entered in Line or Paragraph spacing will apply. I hope this helps. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 14 Sat Mar 06, 1993 GREEN at 23:22 EST Hellpppp11!!!! I am just staritning to use calamus and am going crazy! First, th at , the margins that I set up are displaced in the printing by about a quarter inch , is there a printer offset setup to take care of such problems, like the one in Publisher? I don't want to wing each page set up if is is not printing right. Next, I can't get any frame borders, just a black box and I am going to shoot this thing! Repeatedly I have tried to get the border function to generater a square border in the raster palne but notheing except a black box. Please, I BEG YOU, HELP! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 15 Sun Mar 07, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 02:34 EST Green, I can't remember exactly where everthing is but maybe this will help. After you make your black box if you leave the frame selected on the page you can change it's options while your looking at it. If you pick on the "?" mark while the Raster Icon is selected you'll get another set of choices. The first one will be different shapes. Then there will be 3 more icons one for the box shadow, one for the box fill pattern and one for the box border and line thickness. You can set anyone of these to anything you like. If you want a frame border just set the fill to transparant or white and then set your border thickness. If you find the area I'm talking about I'm sure you can figure it out. Just keep clicking, it's there and possible.:-) Dont' know about the margins, I've noticed that myself on my SLM. I usually just compensate for it. Instead of placing individual help lines for your borders use the column guidline option. You can set the top, right, left and bottom margins all in one shot. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 16 Sun Mar 07, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 06:51 EST Howdy Green, ______ ______ ______ ______ |---\/\| | ? | |_____|| |a | |---/\/| | | | +| |folder| --------------------------------------- | _______ _______ _______ | Pick the shaded-in | | | | \ | | ..... | | square for your | | ABC | | \ | | ..... | | border. My single-sheet feeder is now marked for the proper place to insert a page (I used a small, permanent marker to do the dirty deed...heck, it's my printer :-). Otherwise, I don't know of any way to set the offset for printing, other than fudging your margins and cheating your page sizes, which would be actually more trouble than making a small, black mark on your printer for the correct positioning. Hope this helps ya' out. Best regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 17 Sun Mar 07, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:04 EST Thanks for helping Joey and Wally. Wally, great post! ;-) Green ... After you load your printer driver, go to the PAGE pull down menu and select Page Layout. Then click on the minimal margins option. This will exactly indicate the physical limitations of your printer itself. As long as you have activated your help lines located in the last sub-menu of the frame area, you will then see a faint dotted line indicating that limit on your page itself. I hope you followed this. If not, please do not hesitate to say so and I will take you through it step by step. I'm currently away at a convention typing on my STacy so I can't check out the steps before posting so I'm going on memory. Wow, that little ditty must have taken you half the night! I'm sure that GREEN appreciates the work involved. Folks, We have a true ASCII artist here :-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 19 Sun Mar 07, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 15:32 EST Green, know how you feel. Took me 3 weeks to get a single dot on paper after first buying Calamus. Long before I had GEnie access. Also, watch out for the color icons- trying to print a raster on the page, getting nothing, and then discovering you have selected white "ink" can be rather embarrassing when done in public! :-) Wally, you don't need Calamus, just do ASCII! :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 20 Sun Mar 07, 1993 GREEN at 16:58 EST Thanks, K. I finally got the border to print, I had the raster palne set to black, therefore one could not distigush the border! I still haven't got the answer for presetting the printer so teh print is ont eh page where teh print is one the screen. No offset? One thing I find extremely frustrating with this program is its tendency to shift to drw frame when you set it to change frame. You select a frame, nooooo!!! suddenly your drawing a new frame. Arrgh! At any rate, one thing this program does to me is realize the deficiencies of the st by not having a scalable font system like calamus has. Its terriff! Of course, Mac has one and withthe Mac LCIII at a very competative price vis a vis the Falcon, Hmmmm! We Will See. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 21 Sun Mar 07, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:23 EST GREEN, what printer are you using? If it is the Atari laser, it is the laser which has an unprintable area, not Calamus. If you are using a 24 pin EPSON, you will probably be able to print right to the edge of the layout page. If you are trying to offset print your work, I recommend that you GROUP all frames on the page and then manually offset the one large group frame. The Right Mouse button toggles between Draw and Change mode. Sounds like you are forgetting to right-click before left-clicking to grab or resize a frame. BTW, SpeedoGDOS for AtariWorks is a scalable font system like Calamus. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 22 Sun Mar 07, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:06 EST GREEN I wonder if you are accidently hitting the right mouse button. When in some of the different areas, clicking the right button swaps between create frame and change (edit) frame. I take my cue from the mouse pointer. If it is an arrow, it is going to draw (create) a new frame. If it is a pointing hand then you will change (edit) the frame you click on. Overlapping frames and frame position as to foreground and background have thrown me at times. Did you see Nathan's post about the paper and margins? Just in case you missed it for some reason, I'll try to make everyone feel ignorant. :-) After loading Calamus, make sure your printer driver is loaded. Select create document. Go to and select page layout, and click on minimal margins. Exit the dialog box and your document should show dotted lines at the edges. Keep you frames inside these lines (like the Isuzu commercial, "Stay inside the lines") and everything should print out just fine. If it doesn't I'll give better than even odds it's something you are doing to/with the paper and printer. It's always worked for me, and on three different printers. :-) Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 23 Sun Mar 07, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 22:58 EST Howdy, Green, the right mouse button will abort any frame being drawn. You can also click on the right mouse button to change between DRAW FRAME and CHANGE FRAME. It is a big assumption on my part, but do you know that you have to see the "hand" pointer (and not the cross-hair pointer) on the screen before you can _select_ a frame. Another tidbit on "frames"...if you want the frame to have a shadow, you'll need to pick 0% raster so the box that makes up the shadow won't show through the frame. Then you have to send your raster frame to the background so your text/graphics will show. What type of printer do you have? On my KX-P1124 there is no difference between the tractor feed and the manual feed (as far as alignment goes). I have found that one of my older programs (WWST 2.0) doesn't use the same "left- side" of my printer that Calamus does, but I just increased the left margin for WWST and left my paper in the same spot. I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean, now that I think about it. In Calamus, I use a standard setup with .5" margins all the way around, and I find that Calamus uses the little "0" embossed on my printer as its starting point. After a closer look at my setup, I noticed that the mark I made is right at the embossed "0"... Must have been one of those "late nights". Ken, that is an incredibly dreadful thought...heck, I'll just use the text editor in Flash! for all my DTP work (gosh, that'd be almost as good as using the BTOS computers at work...they've got the full PETASCII character set to play with in Document Designer). Doug, only about an hour to do it up. I couldn't think of any other way to do it without uploading screenshots. A poet, maybe...an artist, Not! I can't write a poem on my computer and I can't draw a picture on paper, but I can write a poem on paper and draw pictures on my computer. Go figger. :-) Best regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 24 Sun Mar 07, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 23:02 EST I think Green was saying his printing is off a 1/4", which minimal margins won't fix. My SLM does the same thing. If I place a line 1" in from the edge of the page it actually measures 1.25" from the edge on the printed sheet. Unless your saying 0 is actually where the minimal line appears? If it is, then thats a terrible way to do it.:-) I assumed it was to strictly display the part of the page that was beyond my printers ability. If it becomes 0 then so should the measurement system. When I upgraded to 1.09n I had to move my shipping labels since the no longer lined up correctly. In other words... I was printing my labels then sticking them back in and printing the names later from inside Informer. When I upgraded to 'n' all my frames where printing over to the left. Since it appeared nobody was going to update Calamus it didn't make sense to complain about it. I'm not doing anything that precise anyway.:-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 25 Tue Mar 16, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 18:50 EST I'm a Calamus newbie. I've been determined to mine the wealth of information in the library, but my impatience has finally caught up with me. I'm going to ask this question that has probably been asked a gazillion times before... Is it possible to 'print' an IMG file to disk using Calamus 1.09n? I've noticed the SLM driver has a function that will let you do this (for those who are tight on RAM it appears) but since I don't have an SLM that driver complains about not being able to find one somewhere in my DMA chain. So, short of buying an SLM or upgrading to Calamus SL, is there anyway to get a document in IMG format? Thanks, Gordon ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 26 Tue Mar 16, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 19:54 EST Welcome aboard Gordon... better late than never :-) The method you described will create a PAGE.IMG file for which you would used the DSKPRT.PRG to print to the laser. I have never tried to print the PAGE.IMG to a non-laser printer. Has anyone else tried this? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 27 Tue Mar 16, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 20:20 EST The DSKPRT.PRG and PAGE.IMG combination was written to specifically use the SLM804 at the time. Nathan@DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 28 Wed Mar 17, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 06:14 EST Howdy, Yeah, I just noticed that same problem after trying it myself... I go to the Print option and the click on "Load Driver" I select TODISK.CPD and click on "OK". I then get a dialogue/notice that my printer is offline and my HD hangs in a read status. I click on "OK" (since that is the only thing I can click on) and my HD unhangs. Then the print options area shows the following for my choice of printers: Printer: >>> PRINTER ERROR <<< I use a Panasonic KX-P1124. I tried the Epson FX/LQ drivers, and they don't seem to offer a way to print to disk. I also tried several other printer drivers with many an interesting result...like, "Fatal error, your computer will blow up in 5 seconds and you can't do anything about it because your keyboard crashed and we've hidden the switch". I barely escaped with my life. Strange (I was going to say, "Very strange", but it really was just "strange" ;). Bob Beauchea ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 37 Fri Mar 19, 1993 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 21:37 EST Howdy, I've heard a lot about "sticky" tabs in another Topic...are the tabs in 1.09n "sticky"? Does this mean I can disable a tab by placing a space between it and the word, or enable a tab by placing it directly by the word? If I'm guessing this correctly I'll be extremely happy. I needed something basically right-justified against a tab, and tried two different ways and both worked. All that means is that I really don't know what I ended up with. So...I guess the $97.00 question is, "What are sticky tabs?". Regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 38 Sat Mar 20, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 00:16 EST Wally, sticky tabs are only used in SL, not 1.09N. There is a full tutorial in Library 30 if you're interested... which I doubt since you don't have SL. Basically, sticky tabs are a system that uses only one kind of tabulator icon in the text ruler. You can sticky text to the the left or right of this tabulator by putting a tab character immediately before or after, respectively, a word (or phrase joined by hard spaces). You can also center a word (or phrase) by putting sticky tabs at BOTH ends of the word. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 39 Sat Mar 20, 1993 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 01:04 EST Bob Beauchea: The current HPIV driver for SL works just fine with 1.09n albeit a tad slower. There doesn't seem to be any screen redraw time at for .GEM files (which on another DTP program you will have to wait a little for the metafile to redraw itself).. Also, it printed out very quickly using a HP II compatible laser printer (where on another DTP program, I would have to wait a while... a long while). At first the many icons and such seemed a bit overwhelming, but once I got the feel of it, I kind of enjoyed them (after all I am a visual person). So I am now anxious to do more and learn more with Calamus. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 52 Fri Apr 09, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 05:25 EDT Glad to hear it Lou. Ask us anything. ;-) Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 53 Fri Apr 09, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 11:21 EDT Hi Lou. Do you have a copy of the Guide to Desktop Publishing. I found it to be an invaluable resource in the days when I was learning 1.09N. Costs about 35.00 ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 54 Sat Apr 10, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 03:21 EDT Nathan & Lou Rocha, If I do encounter any questions I will be sure to ask. Thanks Nathan. Lou, yes, I do have The Guide to Calamus Desktop Publishing. I got the special edition that contained the book, Calamus 1.09N and the Font Editor (haven't even got to the Font Editor yet, though I have been using Font Designer Plus by Mege Type in the past to some degree). It is a good set up... I am looking forward to getting Outline Art now. Then I eventually will want to upgrade to SL. Speaking of SL, and forgive me for asking in this TOPic, but does SL only support ST High & TT High resolutions like 1.09N? The reason I ask is because I am using a color SVGA on my TT and would like to see Calamus in TT Med rez (which is better than ST High) even if the program was still monochrome colors (like HyperLink is still black and white even the color TT Med ). I guess I just need to add a nice 19" TT High rez to my system as well in the future, but I just can not afford that now. ST High is not that bad. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 55 Sat Apr 10, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 08:57 EDT Lou ... not to worry, Calamus SL fully supports TT medium resolution, in color. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 56 Sat Apr 10, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 10:09 EDT Lou T., Calamus SL runs in all TT resolutions. I am using a SVGA to run in 16 color TT med at the moment until I can afford a color card. Honestly speaking, I still prefer to do most of my work on my Mega4/T25 system using the SM124. I guess I am a creature of habit :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 57 Sat Apr 10, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 21:03 EDT Nathan & Lou Rocha, Thanks. I am glad to hear that Calamus SL runs in TT med. I may be upgrading sooner rather than later then . (but I do want to get a better feel of 1.09N before doing so). With the Falcon age upon us now, maybe future versions of Calamus will even support color to the repect of letting you choose Pantone colors and placing them on your layout and such (I believe that Quark does that on the ..well you know.. the "other" platform). Lou, really, you leave your TT for the Mega for DTP work. Interesting... --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 58 Sat Apr 10, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:29 EDT Lou T., the Pantone color tables are already available for Calamus SL... free. Just download them from the library here on GEnie. I use my Mega4/T25 because a) it is almost as fast as my TT, and b) I don't get a lot of orders for color work in my customers although I could handle such. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 59 Sun Apr 11, 1993 ISD [Mario] at 19:28 EDT Calamus SL only runs in TT MED and High Resolutions but will also run in additional resolutions produced by graphics cards such as the Cyrel Sunrise, the Matrix Coco and the Crazy-Dots cards. Mario @ DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 60 Sun Apr 11, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 23:43 EDT Sounds great. SL is becoming more and more attractive. Mario, you mentioned that Calamus SL will run with the Crazy-Dots card and other graphic cards. Will it take advantage of what the cards offer as far as color goes? Another words, if I was doing a color layout and needed to choose colors I can choose the color I want and with the graphic card, it would be represented on the screen, thus I would be presented with what the final layout would look like right on my screen? Since I had my TT, I love TT Med rez, it is good to have a high rez with color. Though I am disappointed that I have to jump down to TT low rez just to have 256 colors. TT Med rez should've given us that right out of the box without having to get an expensive graphic card like the Crazy-Dots. Lou R., Yeah, I do not think that I will have have to do any DTP work that involves color in the near future. I am just thinking ahead. Plus, unfortunately most all of my friends and peers have recently got nice systems for DTP work on other platforms (one in particular which I will not even mention, other than say there is a hamburger out there with the same name ). These systems handle high rez color very nicely. I would like to able to do the same. Sometimes you do not need what you want, but you still want it. Anyway to home this back in to the topic here, I am wondering if I should have just gone with Calamus SL and just skipped 1.09N. Though I must admit that part of the reason I went with 1.09N was because I got it at the same time of my TT, and I could not afford the price of SL. But it looks like I will be upgrading to SL when I can. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 61 Mon Apr 12, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 00:06 EDT Lou T., most folks went to SL because of the incredible upgrade price Nathan offered. Many of those folks are now using SL although some remain more comfortable with 1.09N to suit their needs. I can tell you from experience that once you get comfortable with SL, you will definitely prefer it. BTW, there is a file in the library called CAL_FEAT.TXT which has a pretty good feature by feature comparison of 1.09N and Calamus SL. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 62 Mon Apr 12, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 11:40 EDT Lou ... The other factor to bear in mind is the fact that the Cybercube card is Fast (When compared to other 24 Bit cards it is a cool winner ... Mario @ DMC Publishing ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 64 Mon Apr 12, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 23:34 EDT Lou R., Thanks. I will have to download that file to get a clearer picture of the differences between 1.09N and SL. I will most likely get fairly familiar with 1.09N and then upgrade to SL. Unfortunately, this past week really did not offer me the time I had hope to further my experience with Calamus. Maybe in the next couple of days I will have some time to do so. Nathan, Sounds GREAT. Calamus SL has really come a long way from 1.09N. At least more than I thought before getting Calamus and beginning our discussions here. Nathan, will DMC be represented at the CT AtariFest this year? It would great for me to see SL in action there. Mario, Hmmm... the Cybercube card sounds interesting. I have have not heard much about it. I had looked into Crazy-Dots, but at this time I just can not afford it. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 65 Mon Apr 12, 1993 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 23:58 EDT Lou T. >Will it (SL) take advantage of what the (graphics) cards offer as >far as color goes? >...if I was doing a color layout and needed to choose colors, I can >choose the color I want and with the graphic card, it would be >represented on the screen, thus I would be presented with what the >final layout would look like right on my screen? Lou T, you do not choose the colors with the graphic card. Color choice is a basic function within SL. It has the ability to import and/or create custom color pallettes, and you can choose freely among the entries, regardless of what resolution or color ability you are currently running in. For instance, I have a set or "table" of Pantone colors I load into SL when I want to add color to a document. I save the color list, and and all its attributes with the document. (BTW, I work with color documents in Crazy Dots 1024x768, both in 256 color and monochrome. The colors are still there in mono, just represented on screen as rasters or "k" values). When finsished with a document, I delete all the _unused_ colors, an optional automatic feature of SL that saves memory. Opinion - Although TT med with 256 colors would be nice for general use, it's kind of a mute point for serious DTP work. Even at that level, you would eventually want 15 or 24 bit color and a larger screen/pixel count to work with. There are 16,777,216 colors (24 bits) avaliable for us to use, and 8 bits just can't represent enough of the pallette to _justify the issue_. :-) As far as screen representation of the finished printed colors goes, be aware that it is difficult to accurately represent the actual printed colors on a monitor, even with expensive color calibration hardware and software. This equally applies to _any_ CPU platform and display system, not just Atari. While a monitor is transmissive (additive colors), the printed page is reflective (subtractive) - two completely different animals. The printed colors are very dependant on such variable conditions as ink mixes, registration accuracy, ambient light conditions, and the type and color of paper stock used. That's why all color jobs require some form of proofing :-) Enjoy 1.09! You will _know_ when and if you need to upgrade :-) Doug7 ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 67 Tue Apr 13, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 20:56 EDT Calamus handles GEM metafiles much better than my other DTP program. All the curve lines are correct, all the lines that should be hidden are hidden, and the screen fills are correct. Having said all that, it seems that Calamus 1.09N sometimes chokes on certian files. One GEM file it presented me with an alert box reporting some sort of error and asking me whether to continue or cancel. If I continue I get bumped back to the desktop. On the other GEM file it loads it and then the program freezes up and all I can do it reboot. I thought that maybe both of these files may be corrupted so I tried them in my other DTP program and it did load without a problem (though did not handle them will as I am sure Calamus would have if it loaded them). These two files are really unimportant because they are not for a client or any job that I was doing for myself, I had just been "playing" around with Calamus in order to learn more about it and get a better feel of it. Okay... I just tried the first GEM file that cause problems importing to Calamus with Calligrapher Gold, and Touch Up and it loaded fine and displayed it properly. The second one caused problems with the other these two as well, so I am not worried about that one. I just tried the same GEM file in Calamus 1.09N. When it tries to load the GEM file I get an alert box that states, -------------------------------- | Fatal internal error ! | | 2/11/ex/96C04 | | What now? | | ----------- -------- | | | PROCEED | | EXIT | | | ----------- -------- | -------------------------------- All I can do really is exit, because I think the computer crashes if I choose proceed. I am using a TT030 with TOS 3.06. I just find it odd that loading a GEM file would cause such a "fatal error" while loading the same GEM file into other programs does not. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 68 Tue Apr 13, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 21:32 EDT Lou T. when those error messages appear in Calamus SL, it is usually indicative of a RAM based problem - often related to the RAM address of an ACC or AUTO program. I would suggest you strip out your system, run 1.09N and see if they load. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 69 Tue Apr 13, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 22:09 EDT Doug Walter, Thanks for your opinion of Calamus SL when using the Crazy-Dots card. It helps a great deal to read how you use the combination. Maybe one day if the prices fall (or my financial condition gets better) I will get the Crazy Dots 15 (or another card similiar to it) for my TT030. But I will probably upgrade to SL before that. I do not need the color features at this very moment, but I feel better knowing now that it is available. I am also glad that DMC has kept on improving Calamus to the level of SL (and probably beyond) for the Atari. Again, thanks for your input. --Lou T.-- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 70 Sat Apr 24, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 10:52 EDT Nathan, Do you have an 804 that you are confident is in 100% good working order? I have be emailing back and forth with DOUG7 about this and related areas. IF you have the time, and IF your 804 is 100% okay, I have a favor to ask. Contact me via email if you are interested. It's not a large or time comsuming question, will probably take almost as long for for me to write the email and for you to read it as it will take to do it. Post here if you do not have the time. Thinking I had major problems with an LJ+ clone, I bought a used 804 from another GEnie user. To my chagrin, I found that the 804's output of some raster patterns to be "major inferior" to the clone output. These rasters were created with Touch Up and 1.09n. Where the LJ+ printed a real nice grey pattern, the 804 produced ugly striped or striated (where did that word come from) grey. I tried cleaning and replacing toner and drum to cure the problem, but that did not work. It dawned on me one day that maybe the 804 was simply not capable of matching the LJ+ output in this area. But I have no way of determining this since there is no other 804 around here. It occurred to me, finally, that if anyone would have known good 804, it would be you. :-) So, if you're willing, this is what I would appreciate you doing: 1. Using 1.09n, create new doc, and the create a raster frame that basically fills the page. I've been doing my tests on letter sized paper, but I don't think that has anything to do with the problem. :-) 2. Go to Raster special functions, select raster, then select raster fill patterns menu. 3. Select 12% raster, color (colour?) 1, so the frame is filled with 12% raster. 4. Print it on the 804, and mail to me. If your print out matches mine, I will conclude my 804 is okay, and the 804 cannot do what I want. If your's is different, then I will conclude my 804 is defective in some way. DOUG7 & I have exchanged samples, and he says my 804 does better than his. And you could always put the printout in my copy of the mailers that are going out tomorrow. :-) Let me know how this sounds. Thanks, Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 75 Sun Apr 25, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 16:36 EDT Ken, there are a number of fill pattern sample sheets here in Library 30. I should have your address from the disk you sent a while ago, but email it to me again. I will mail you samples from each and a disk with the original CDK's so you can print them on your printer for comparison. BTW, the 'real look' of the fill pattern would likely be different based on the size of printer pixels for each respective printer. I have seen differences from one HP printer to another. There are differences between the 605 and 804 too. In CALAMUS SL the raster generator module is used to control dot size, shape and angle. You can also vary the resolution (lines per inch) of your printed output. Doug Walter is one of the experts in this area. BTW, thanks for the nice compliment in the GEMVIEW topic about my ALAD_MAN.LZH file. That little 12 page tutorial took two weeks to complete and I learned a few things about GEnie along the way :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 76 Sun Apr 25, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 17:13 EDT Ok. I'll get this out to you. By the way, did you play with the Raster settings in the Print dialog box of 1.09N? If memory serves, select 1X and RASTER for the best output. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 77 Sun Apr 25, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:29 EDT Nathan & Lou, Make sure you guys get together on who is sending what. No use flooding the postal service. :-) Lou, Address coming in email. I think just the one sample via instructions in previous message is all I really need. I'm not trying to gather a bunch of sample sheets, just trying to determine if my 804 is operating correctly. A 12% raster print will answer the question as this is the worst case scenario on my 804. Assuming your 804 is 100% okay, if your printout matches mine, then I am trying to get the 804 to do something it can't because of its design, which is okay although disappointing from my end. Differences between 804 and 605 is totally logical, since one is Oasys based, and the other is Canon based. I wish my LJ+ clone would print lighter than it does, but nada that I can do about it. Have heard that NEC's also tend to be dark, but have never tried one. Hope to try my friend's LJ4 when enough snow goes away we can walk across the ground without worrying about falling through the snow. :-) Finally getting some kind of handle on the SL raster generator. Wanted to eliminate the raster generator as contributor to the test, which is one reason I requested 1.09n. Your welcome, as to the GEMVIEW post. Maybe you could talk to the Aladdin boys and get still another outside job. Ken S. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 78 Sun Apr 25, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 22:08 EDT Too late, Ken. I mailed the samples this afternoon before your email arrived. Unfortunately, I did not put your PO Box on it. So, how many Ken Springers are there in Bettles, AK? The page I mailed is a 1.09N/SLM804 printout of the CALAFILL file in Library 30, in case you want to print one on your machine to compare. My 804 has a brand new drum so the comparison should be valid. Regarding the Calamus Aladdin manual, I have already sent copies to Mike Keller and Ron Hunter. I am waiting to hear how they like it. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 79 Mon Apr 26, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 13:39 EDT Lou - I enjoyed your Aladdin manual too, I've filed it away for the next time I need a sample layout to steal from. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 80 Mon Apr 26, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 21:50 EDT Lou, Not to worry, only one in Bettles. I sincerely apologize for not yet finishing what I started. Due to the fact that I may need surgery to both shoulders, it may be a while before I complete the project. Sorry. Also, because I've received only 3 (three) thank you messages/E-mail for my efforts to date (with over 60 downloads of the files), I will most likely not be uploading the rest of the Templates when they are done. I am going to take Nathan's and one user's suggestion and market them on a retail basis. I anticipate asking $59.95 for the complete set of templates (over 130 in all). I'm an almost happy Calamus 109.6 user, and have not logged on Genie for a year or two. My program will not successfully merge documents If I have two pages of one newsletter and would like to load the last page of another to use, the program always crashes. Is this a problem just with my own program, or is it with that version of Calamus? Do I have to upgrade to solve it? I use Calamus primarily to produce a newsletter (unpaid) for a non- profit organization, and am not really able to upgrade at this time. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help; hope I'm somewhat in the right category/topic, and hope to hear from someone soon. Thanks p.highet s ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 129 Sun Aug 08, 1993 P.HIGHET [p. highet] at 21:13 EDT Hi again. Another question. . . I have the Mega STE with SLM804. If I accidentally send a print command while I'm out of paper, the printer out of paper signal comes up, then the printer driver crashes. BOOO! Then I have to scroll through the list of printer drivers to reload it. May I go into my directory and delete those other drivers (in the hard drive) without upsetting anything else? (I know it might be easier to keep paper in there but when this happens it is a big pain). If just the one driver came up, it would not be quite so irritating. Thanks again. p.highet ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 130 Sun Aug 08, 1993 G.GORMAN2 [Glenn Gorman] at 23:55 EDT P.Highet or is that Mr. P. ??? Anyway. I don't know what's causing your printer crash. But by all means. Delete "ALL" of those unused printer drivers. If you only use one printer, than those others drivers are just taking up space. Calamus has no need for them, unless that printer is in use. As for your merge problem, I'm sure that someone else will be able to help you with that. Glenn... ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 131 Mon Aug 09, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 08:50 EDT At least, upgrade to Calamus 1.09N. You are using a version that has been replaced by a much better, faster improved and enhanced version, 109N. The upgrade charge remains at $29.95 these past two years. There are a few possibilities for your crash. First of all, is it possible that you have exceeded your available memory when you loaded in that 3rd page? (certain death) Is it possible that the page format of one is not the same as the page format of the other? Are you using the double-page layout, left and right hand pages? As Glenn mentioned, the only drive you require is the one for the printer you wish to use. No others ever need be present. Sincerely Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 132 Wed Aug 11, 1993 P.HIGHET [p. highet] at 02:33 EDT to G. Gorman2 and Potechin thanks for your suggestions. I'm wiping those other drivers out tonight. Nathan... I don't think I'm using too much space. This baby crashes when I load a blank page. When I'm trying to merge anything. When I'm just trying to bring a blank layout page in to use with another short document. In short, I just can't merge anything. No, I don't think I'm using a different page format. But frankly, I'm not sure. I'm just taking the same documents which change slightly from month to month and trying to draw certain pieces of last month's document in so I don't have to do it over again. No, I'm not using the double page format. Should I be? I got that to work once and it seemed that I was limited as to what I could do. So I work one page at a time. Another question. On my front page (and other page) format everything is laid out the way I want it from month to month. But the text changes, of course. I want to keep my text boxes and delete the text only. But I have not been able to do that without losing the text rulers and all of my specs for those boxes. How can I get rid of the text only and keep the other vital info? Another question. In this new version of Calamus, may I permanently change the DEFAULTS? What I mean is, I use a certain leading and font size regularly. I'd like to set those and not have to change them every time Calamus comes up. I cannot do this in my current version. Answer yes and you have a sale! Thanks for your help and time. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 141 Sun Aug 29, 1993 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 15:14 EDT I've got a problem with 1.09.6 and this is the closest category I could get. (Do you take upgrade orders by e-mail - silly question?) I have a MegaST4 with Megafile20 and SLM804. Over the last 2 days I have been building a newsletter from a disk of ASCII text. The file has grown to nearly 190K from a start of 15K. My normal procedure is to load the CDK, then load the dictionary (Standard.CWB at about 180K), set hyphenation on and then add frames and import text. Usually the importation works. The articles come to me with titles on, which I then move into their own frames and tag for fonts. The ERROR usually happens when I am moving the text. I cut it from the original article using the text clipboard. Often the removed text shows up on the clipboard but the system hangs and doesn't rewrite the screen. Other times the cut works but when I go to paste the title into its new frame I get the following: Fatal Internal Error -6/2/in/0 followed by TOS - Error Error #1 Other times I have no trouble at all with one text file, but the next one, or the next one after that cause a crash. Is it me, is it 1.09, (I don't think it's the text files), is it my ST, what is going on? BTW: I started this process by keeping the laser unplugged from the ST - saves power and noise. When I started getting this error, I plugged it in and turned it on to see if that was the problem - nope. Any ideas? Robert in Toronto ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 142 Sun Aug 29, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 16:38 EDT Robert, first of all... UPGRADE :-) I think it is 30.00 from your version to 1.09N which is rock steady. As for your problem, sure sounds like a RAM problem with the clipboard. If each article is separate, why not import them directly into their own frames? Don't bother using the clipboard. Lou (in Toronto too) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 143 Tue Aug 31, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 13:16 EDT Robert ... Please drop into DMC, in Markham, and upgrade to 1.09N which will have a dramatic affect on your work in progress. Call us at 479 1880 and I'll be happy to give you specific directions from anywhere in Toronto. And this is EXACTLY the right place to ask any 1.09x related questions. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 144 Tue Aug 31, 1993 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 18:22 EDT Each text file is separate and, as you suggested, I do import them separately (one at a time) into frames. This error has happened irregularly and infrequently since I got this system (Apr 93) but it happens so frequently with this news letter I figured I should find out what's going on. I only used the clipboard to cut and paste the article titles which are part of the original text, but which I put into separate frames for ease of use (2 column text, 1 column header etc.) I've started typing the titles directly into their own frames (ie not using the clipboard) and that's working OK. Something I didn't mention is that I use KAOSDESK, the PD desktop. I gather it uses up RAM. Maybe with the original desktop plus Kaos plus Calamus plus the dictionary there just isn't enough RAM even on a Mega4? Robert in Toronto ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 145 Tue Aug 31, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou] at 19:35 EDT Robert, that is a distinct possibility. If the problem occurs only wityh one file, it is possible the file is corrupted. I would rebuild the file by exporting each frame (or text chain) to its own ASCII file. Create a new document and the required frames and import the ASCII. Reformat your text styles. Now try those cut and paste functions and see if you still have the problem. If so, strip out the AUTO and ACC's. I am sure you have more than just one of them. Sometimes they are fine by themselves but do weird things in combination. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 146 Tue Aug 31, 1993 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 19:55 EDT Nathan: I called today for an upgrade. Don't know who I talked to but after I said I'd like to order an upgrade he asked for my name, my credit card and my Calamus registration number, said he would send out the upgrade and almost hung up. I asked "Which upgrade will you send?" He said "The most recent one, July's" I said "I have 1.09, and am only going to 1.09N for now." "Oh," he said. I wouldn't have been too happy to get an upgrade for SL and I hope your customer database would show I don't own SL. Still, maybe I'm the only person left who hasn't bought the 1.09N upgrade and that's why he didn't ask what upgrade I was looking for. Anyway I look forward to getting 1.09N in the next few days. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 147 Wed Sep 01, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 09:13 EDT Sorry about that Robert. :-) Actually, there are still thousands of people with Calamus 1.09N. It was just a question of timing. I did a mailout a few weeks back to the Calamus SL customers only concerning a major new upgrade from the older version of Calamus SL to the latest version. So most of the telephone calls and email and letters that have arrived these past weeks have been for the SL upgrade. There is a serious improvement in the manner in which 1.09N handles text flow, over 1.09x. You will notice the difference immediately. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 148 Wed Sep 01, 1993 R.BOARDMAN [Robert Board] at 19:33 EDT Lou: You guessed right about AUTO and ACC's. I do have a few, 6 show on the desktop. Since I installed Hyperpaint (which won't run) recently I also have GDOS lurking underneath somewhere too I think. And Kaosdesk seems to have some incompatibilities as well. I don't think this newsletter is corrupted, although I have had some thoughts in that direction. When this Fatal Error happened the third time with any particular file, I exported the text, deleted the frames, closed the newsletter and imported the text into new frames and tried to duplicate the error. I also tried the same thing with the original text files. Nada When I couldn't duplicate the error except in the newsletter itself, I began to suspect this Fatal Error was an "Out of Memory" or "Memory Conflict" error. I was hoping somebody here could tell me/us what the error coding means. Is there a file here somewhere which lists the error codes generated by Calamus? Neither the Manual nor the Guide have lists. I want to make a series of calendars which sometimes will be printed full 8 1/2 X 11 page and sometimes other sizes. Do I have to draw the horizontal and vertical lines in frames and set up each size separately or is it possible to generate a table in a frame fairly automatically which can them be adjusted to fit the page size? Once the calendar "date boxes" are made then I will enter the relevant data. However I suspect putting text or graphics into little cells will be easier than getting the cells to appear in the first place. Perhaps there is a calendar generating programme for ST's which uses a file format I can import into Calamus, even in a graphic format. At least then I could alter the size to fit the printed page. I could convert it, if Glenn doesn't mind to CVG format using DATAFORMER, so that you could adjust the size to fit your needs. The CVG file can easily be imported to 1.09N If I do convert it note that Dataformer alters the vertical height of the CVG so that if you select [Ideal size] the CVG goes out of proportion. Maybe someone at DMC could convert it using BRIDGE or maybe loan me a copy. *** ~.* \_/ BTW I don't see anything wrong with your name Bob on Long Island ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 160 Sun Oct 31, 1993 G.GORMAN2 [Glenn Gorman] at 05:02 EST Nathan, don't forget to write in your wedding anniversary. I really don't know what your doing with the different size calanders, but a non-computer way would be to make one master the largest size and then reduce it using a copy machine. That way you would not have to do all the resizing manually. What I am doing is making event/birthday calendars for my congregation. In order to save paper and cut costs (and save trees of course :-) ) I wanted to print a half sheet master - horizontal format - for each month. We are a fairly small group (about 80 adults) so not too many days have more than one birthday or event, i.e. I'm not too worried about running out of room in small boxes. I was just looking for an easier way to make the boxes than drawing and aligning all those horizontal and vertical lines. Programmes I have used and am using in the IBM world can generate tables (lines and all) based on tabulated data. I had hoped Calamus would do the same. Guess nobody has pushed Ditek to develop such an attribute. Thanks for all your suggestions. In return for your help, when I get the blank masters done I'll upload them in case anyone else needs something similar. I've downloaded a bunch of utilities that convert GIf files to various formats, but none of those formats can be imported into 1.09N. (GIFSCALE does a great job of gray scale conversion and DMJ_GIF3 is very flexible, but neither converts to a STAD, IMG, or other 1.09N format... same problem with all the others I've tried. Have I missed a real gem somewhere? I've only searched in GEnie and (excuse me) CompuServe.) I'll be grateful to any other 1.09N users who let me know how they've solved this problem. Thanks! There is a great graphics conversion programme available for DOS machines called Graphics Workshop. It's shareware as well. If you have access to one of these DOS boxes then convert the GIF on it with Graphics Workshop to an IMG and then use it in Calamus. I've done it lots of times and had no problems. GemView is an impressive program. It seems like it will convert from nearly any format to just about any format. I'm going to play with it some more then decide if I'll be using it beyond it's 14-day free trial period. If so, I'll register it and put it into my graphics utility folder. Dorothy... I've got MVG 2.1, but never ordered Dr. Bob's utility disks. After reading the messages in the MVG topic, I've decided to order those disks. While GemView's specialty seems to be image conversion, MVG is a real workhorse that I've turned to when nothing else I have can do what needs to be done. Robert... I've got an old Toshiba portable I use for doing the very few things I can't do on my STe. I'll doGraphics Workshop to find out if it has any capabilities missing from GemView and MVG. Try to load it in, even showing 3MB free RAM and it gives a "not enough memory error." The ENGLISH.CWB which comes with 1.09N works every time. I've never had any problems with it. I don't know why this is so, I haven't asked what the differences are, I don't care to know. It works and does a great job (most of the time) so I use English.CWB instead of Standard.CWB and am a happy camper. On the SLM 804 you have to move a >lever to signal Calamus that you are using Legal size paper. The DMA port has all the lines needed for two-way communication. Atari did not see fit to connect the handshaking lines on the parallel port, so the printer is not allowed to tell the computer anything (unless you have a Falcon). That's why you have to use special software to dump stuff from a Portfolio to an ST through the Parallel. It is also why you can't use a parallel port tape drive for back-ups on an ST. Like all 1985 hardware designs, the demands of the end user were greatly underestimated. 01/13/94, 16:45 All, I talked with Canon Tech Support today. Seems I owe the Calamus programmers an apology. The programmers' technical manual for the BJ100/130 has the same shortcoming as the the one for the BJ200/230; it does not cover the extended control codes needed to make the ?30 model print in wide carriage mode. In other words, the codes necessary to make the 130 or 230 print in tabloid or even legal-size landscape mode are UNPUBLISHED! The guy kept trying to tell me that the Windows 3.1 driver that came with the printer already supported those modes & I kept telling him that I did not CARE what Windows supported. I finally told him that while I preferrred the print quality of the BJ200, I would be purchasing a DeskJet in order to have support from an intelligent staff. The new Epson Stylus printers (also 360 dpi) are out of the question because the minimum right margin is too large (.38 inches or .97 cm) giving a centered print area less than 7 3/4 inches wide. 01/13/94, 22:40 I have a DeskJet 500. I'll set it up tomorrow. When I called HP Tech Support, I went through the recorded messages (quite informative) and still had some questions so I hit "0" to get to a real person and the lady on the other end said, "Hewlett Packard ink jet printer PRE- PURCHASE SUPPORT. May I help you?" That did it. Thanks for all the input, both here and in Cat. 6, Topic 5 & 9. John L. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 197 Thu Jan 13, 1994 J.BATTEY1 [J. L.
