I'm still using 1.09 since my upgrade has not showed up yet (sigh). While running a file about 400k I was tring to to some fairly extensive search and replace functions for some text. This was proving to be very slow so I had the brilliant idea to take about the first 2/3 of the file out of the editor and put it in a clipboard to see if it would speed things up. Wonder of wonders, it did so I merrily went and did about 2 hours of work. I then put the stuff from the clipboard back where it belonged and saved the file. Unfortunately when I went back to the file, everything that was not in the clipboard section that was pasted back was gone (which was all my work of course). I tried again and after I had pasted the clipboard back to the beginning of the file I scrolled to the end of the editor. FATAL INTERNAL ERROR etc. etc. Is this me or a bug? Needless to say this did not make my day. Gord ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 2 Sun Feb 23, 1992 R.BROWN30 at 04:52 EST D.SIMMER: A while back, you mentioned a problem with color information in an IMG file making further bit editing impossible. The shareware program GEM View by Dieter Fiebelkorn (another smart German), _might_ take care of your problem. GEM View will load a great many ST graphics formats, and produce Degas or IMG files as output. However, the current GEM View _does_ support color XIMG, even in saving. However, I believe the program has flexibility in color selection and compressing color maps. This is truly a must-have graphics viewer/processor for Atari users. TIF 5.0 is expected to be supported in its next upgrade. - Richard Brown Read more in GEnie Lamp ST right here on GEnie! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 3 Sun Feb 23, 1992 D.KERR1 [Drew] at 22:38 EST RICHARD: I asked this question elsewhere -- how does GEM View save/convert (if it does?). Looking forward to your article... Drew ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 4 Wed Feb 26, 1992 K.MILLER69 [Kyle Miller] at 00:37 EST ISD or anyone, I have Calamus 1.09N. I want to print right onto envelopes with my SLM804. I make a pagelayout the size of an envelope. When Calamus prints, it prints on the right side of the manual feed. The SLM804 will only grip the envelope on the left hand side of the manual feed. Is there anyway to fix this without turning frames all over the place? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 5 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 08:02 EST I just hooked up a used SLM804 in order to print from Calamus...I get a great -- quick -- printout -- and then Calamus bombs out. What is wrong. I did a garbage collection before my last attempt, and there were two megs free. I can only print one page at a time, reboot, print another, reboot, ... Any ideas appreciated. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 6 Wed Feb 26, 1992 S.WINICK at 08:17 EST Dorothy, By having 2 megs free, do you mean you're using a 4 meg machine and have 2 megs free after loading everything? If so, you should have plenty of memory (in your computer ;-). If you only have 2 megs of RAM total in the computer, you may be running out of memory. If that's not the problem, check all your connections to the SLMC804 laser printer interface. It's also possible that the SLMC804 may be malfunctioning. If you have someone nearby with an Atari laser printer, try borrowing their interface and try again. If everything works properly, you'll know that's the cause of the problem. I've seen a few systems malfunction similarly due to a faulty SLMC804. Replacements are available from Atari; and I believe we also have at least one in stock as well if you need one quickly. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 7 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 09:00 EST Yes, Sheldon, I do mean that there are 2 of 4 megs available, even after Calamus and my document are loaded. I'll look at the cables...it doesn't help that we are sans manual here; maybe I can borrow a friend's while we get it going. Thanks for the interface tip. We'll check it out. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 8 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 11:16 EST Sheldon, actually, with experience I've discovered that there are two symptoms of trouble: (1) the bombing upon printout (although the printing is successful) and (2) a difficulty in convincing my hard disk to boot up with the interface connected to it (succeeds perhaps 1 time out of 3). I have to actually turn the computer _off_ to reboot as well. A pal with a manual and an interface will be enlisted tonight for some tinkering. In the meantime, with my hd apparently at risk and containing all sorts of stuff I haven't backed up (!), I have disconnected the SLM. Did go ahead and do the load-printout-reboot-load... thing 28 times to print the first draft of my new program's manual, though. Even with this silly routine, it's faster than printint to my DJ. Somebody back a few messages had set up his envelope DTP on the opposite side of the page than the printer needed. Did you try choosing INVERT from the PRINT dialog (this is in 1.09N)? That ought to work. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 9 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 14:43 EST Um, never mind! A helpful Atari employee suggested that I put the laser printer FIRST in the DMA lineup, and now Calamus is humming along, printing without bombs. ;-) Guess a manual would have come in handy. Got quite a deal on it: $300, but without the manual. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 10 Wed Feb 26, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 15:13 EST >Live from Germany........ Gord...my apologies. 1.09N has been known to encounter difficulty when cutting large amounts of text to the clipboard. Your concept was good, Richard...thank you for sharing the GEM View info with us. As I sit here with another one of those "smart Luxemburgers" :-) I can only applaud the timing of your comment. Kyle...Simply create a rotated text frame, rotate it to 90 degrees and insert your required text. Then select manual on your printer and print. You WILL be required to turn one single frame though. Glad to hear your printing problems are now resolved Dorothy. Thanks for lending a hand Sheldon. I was not surprised to read the fix. :-) Nice price for the SLM804. By the way, the real fix would have been add a 7407 to the interrupt line of the SLMC804. Tschuess ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 11 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 15:39 EST Hmmm...The fellow who sold it to me made some mention of having "modified' the controller. I'll check and see if your fix has been done, Nathan. I still seem to be having a little tiny bit of trouble getting the hd to boot; never had this before with this hd. It was booting 1 time out of 3 before, now it's more like 9 times out of 10 (doing a lot of booting today!). Anyway, the joyful part is that I can set a whole manual to print, walk away, and come back after a snack to find it finished! ;-) Amazing. Nothing short of it. Thanks for checking in from Germany! I used to have occaisional boot failure from the HD after buying the Laser. When I was tinkering one day I changed it to the last device in the chain and have never seen a boot failure since (except when I forgot to read the manual and DCSquished my boot.sys...) Gunner ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 20 Sun Mar 01, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 14:17 EST Thanks for the hint, Gunner. I'm about to add a TOADFILE removable 44 to the chain, so I'll try that when I do. I'm still experiencing some flakey booting. Fortunately, though, if I can get to my Drive E, I can run and print from Calamus wonderfully fast! Last night, I had to add some stuff and subtract some stuff from a two-year-old manual I'd done in Timeworks (I am upgrading the related product). I thought about how horrendous it is to print from Timeworks on the HP -- and I'd have to completely reinstall TW to get it to print to the SLM -- and I decided it would be quicker to redo the whole dang manual in Calamus than to print out minor mods in TW. So in the next HOUR, I built the manual in Calamus AND printed it out on my SLM! Just have to edit today! ;-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 21 Sun Mar 01, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 17:19 EST WOW Dorothy, am I jealous. I had a similar project over Christmas but my original DOC files went missing and I had to retype 75 pages of text for a sports manual I was redoing in Calamus. I asked around about a utility to extract ASCII from TWDTP and SGUBER and others provided some ideas...but no utility. I took a long time to decide on OCR software...now that I have one, the original project is long finished :-) Regarding the DMA chain....Gunner is dead right. Set the laser at 7 and things should hum. I have two HD's and a SYQUEST 44 in my chain and everything works beautifully with the SLM at 7. (Darn...I shouldn't have said that so loud) :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 22 Sun Mar 01, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 17:48 EST Fortunately, I had the benefit of my original DOCs. ;-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 23 Sun Mar 01, 1992 A.VALENT [Mike] at 23:24 EST You're right, Nathan, the 32 lpcm 5x5 raster setting works beautifully printing at 300 dpi. I have had a great deal of trouble trying to get that setting applied to *documents imported from 1.09N* but seem to have no problem getting it to "take" on a new SL document. Could this be related to the inactive 'Set Document Parameters' module? I was able to get one of these imported docs to print using the 32 setting, but had to set every rastered frame on the page individually. Saver the doc that way, but it reloads exactly as it was before I did all the resetting. The '32' setting you recommended produces actually a slightly "cleaner" looking raster than 1.09N did... very nice! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 24 Sun Mar 01, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 23:58 EST Mike, I haven't tried this but I think it might work. If you want to change the raster in several frames at the same time try the DYNAMIC LINKING feature of SL. This is introduced in a short summary at the beginning of [5.9]. I have used this feature to change color, fill patterns, shapes, radius settings, etc. so I think it might work for your purpose. Select all frames to be changed by clicking on one of them and then using the Select ALL (ALT) A. Then bring up the Raster Generator module and set your lpcm. If I had time I'd try it ... please let us know. BTW, the RASTER GENERATOR module does have "Document" setting. How come you have to change each frame individually? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 25 Mon Mar 02, 1992 N.B.GARDNER [BRUCE] at 04:33 EST Nathan or anyone who knows anything, I've got a question for you Calamus gurus. I have been trying to import a text which contains tabs from WordPerfect into SL. I can't get any of the tabs to import. Is this not working correctly or am I doing something wrong? I have tried to substitute the tab character for something else and then do a search and replace in SL, but I can't get the search and replace function to accept a tab. Does anyone know how to make this happen? Also the virtual memory works weird on my machine. (mega 4ST) When I set it to clear instead of disable the virtual memory it will work just fine until I turn off the computer. When I reenter the program and you see the little virtual memory spinner (sorry it's the best I can do) goes round and round showing you that its loading, it gets slower and slower until it stops and then nothing more happens. No more loading of the program. I have to reset the computer and physically delete all the folders in the VM folder before I can get into SL. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? I didn't get the SL 511.cdk doc with my disks. Can anyone E-mail me that doc? Thanks, <<<<<<<< Bruce Gardner >>>>>>>> ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 26 Mon Mar 02, 1992 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 06:25 EST Bruce, I think, your tab problem can be fixed by addin a text ruler to the frame in SL, with the tabs you want. I have not played with Sl enough yet (I have been rather busy) but I beleive there is a was to set this up as a default. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 27 Mon Mar 02, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 12:37 EST I intend on uploading the 5.11 CDK to our library later today. One change in the TAB settings for SL is that you are required to have a space after the TAB because of the many possibilites of which you are now capable. Try adding a single space Bruce. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 28 Mon Mar 02, 1992 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 21:44 EST Lou, What OCR software you working with? And do you like it? Doug ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 29 Mon Mar 02, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 22:10 EST Bruce, I am not sure about the WORDPERFECT import of tabs...although I would have thought it worked...but you can search and replace tabs in the text editor. Use any uncommon symbol (or combination like /*) and replace with the character created by pressing [CTRL] and [i]. Been using it for years. Regarding the Virtual Memory problem...I wonder if you have set up your VM folder on a drive that has too little free space or has been highly fragmented. So far you are the first to report this problem with the virtual memory. I suggest (if you haven't done so) setting up VM as a folder on the root of your drive partition. Don't forget to reset your system paths and SAVE SETUP. When you reboot, you may be OK. Let me know how that works. J.MEEHAN....that's a great idea...and so obvious I forgot about it :-) Thanks, Joe. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 30 Mon Mar 02, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 22:41 EST Doug, I just spent 409.00 on Migraph OCR and the scanning tray. My problem is that the WP import driver doesn't seem to import any of the tabs that in a WP document. I don't see any tabs in the PKS module after importation. I could get around this problem if I could search and replace with a tab character. Any help would be kindly appreciated. Lou, Thanks for your suggestions about the virtual memory. I will try it and see how it works. I am also anxious to try the [CTRL] and [i] combination in the search and replace mode. There are so many great new features in SL. I love this program. I now wish I had more speed though. Nathan, how long will the special go on for the TT030 board? It might take some of us a while to get the bucks for it. <<<<<<<< Bruce Gardner >>>>>>>> ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 32 Tue Mar 03, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 04:38 EST Bruce, I've had the experience of importing 1st Word Plus files containing tabs, only to have those tabs NOT show up in my Calamus text box...If I later insert a tab in the Calamus box (it's on that text ruler icon thing), the 1st Word Plus tabs are restored and all the expected tabbed lines move over to the correct position. Maybe this would solve your problem, or am I being too basic here? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 33 Tue Mar 03, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 06:55 EST Bruce...I need to dig out my Word Perfect and try some things. I'll get back to you on this. As far as speed goes, not to worry, between T25's and Turbo 030's from Fast Technology, not to mention boards from ICD, Gadgets and a few others I'm probably not even aware of, :-), you have time. Jim will honor the Turbo 030 price for the time being, without a doubt. :-) Thanks Dorothy...anythings possible. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 34 Tue Mar 03, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 08:44 EST Dorothy, your answer about importing Tabs in any wordproccesed file is EXACTLY right. They need to be created on a ruler before SL can move the words...otherwise, where would they be moved to? :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 35 Tue Mar 03, 1992 SFRT-ASST [Kene @ SFRT] at 12:07 EST I seem to be having the same problem. I used Edhak you place TABs in a document but 1.09 doesn't show its version of the TAB character when I import the document. (something from a spreadsheet--MasterPlan) Really weird. Do I need to create a ruler _before_ I import TAB text? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 36 Tue Mar 03, 1992 SANDY.W [RT SysOp] at 12:48 EST Bruce - I haven't had any trouble importing tabs from WordPerfect with the original Calamus. I wouldn't know about SL, but then the SL topic is Topic 20 in this category. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 37 Tue Mar 03, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 18:25 EST Well Ken...IF you create a ruler with tabs before IMPORTing text, then the tabbed text should move to the appropropriate place. However, just as you can change tab positions after importing, so can you set them after importing. BTW, remember two things about SL tabs: 1> They work differently since they can be used to Left, Right and Centre words and phrases [5.6.3.1], page 28 in the Text Module. 2> They can be moved/set in at least two ways: a> Point and click on the ruler; b> EDIT RULER settings by double-clicking the [Ruler] button in the PKS editor. I am going to look for the ASCII value for the TAB and then I will post a tip on Searching and Replacing tabs in the PKS editor. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 38 Wed Mar 04, 1992 SFRT-ASST [Kene @ SFRT] at 01:51 EST TABS are Control-I's. Thanks for your help though and as I mentioned in an earlier post, I just changed the tabs in WP to *'s, then did a search and replace in SL using the [ALT] #9 combination and it works just fine. It would be nice just to have the WP import driver just import the tabs, but SL is smart enough to get around that. Sandy.W, I didn't have any trouble with importing tabs in 1.09n either. It's just the new driver that seems to have this problem. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 40 Wed Mar 04, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 04:30 EST Thanks for the info on Tabs = ASCII 9. I want to print right onto regular business envelopes with my SLM804. I do a layout and put my text on. My problem is that when Calamus rotates the envelope, it rotates the wrong way. It rotates to where the top of the envelope is on the right side of the feeder. The 804 has its pinch rollers on the left. Without having to compose my envelopes upside down, how can I correct this problem. My solution would be to have Calamus to print on the left of the feeder, the bottom of the envelope flush against the left. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 43 Fri Mar 06, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 18:22 EST Kyle, I just made one envelope side ways and saved it. All you have to do is change the name once the frames are set. It works really well and you don't have to wait for the page to rotate. Put the top of the envelope toward the center of the page, that way you don't have to worry about your border and you can print closer to the top edge. I also had a problem with some envelopes catching on the corner inside the printer. I had to put a little piece of tape on it. The seam on the Envelope stuck right on it every time. Cheap envelopes I guess.:-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 44 Sun Mar 08, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 10:08 EST As Joey mentioned Kyle, just used rotated text, save the layout and simply change the names when required. I have two questions. When printing raster frames at less than 100% (gray) it produces a poor output ie lines and streaks. I have a 1040STe w/4megs, AdSpeed, TOS 2.06 and an Oki Lazer 800. Before you ask this printer does superbly with PGS 2.1 when printing grays etc. No streaking! I tried the x2 with raster button selected but that did not produce a gray scale look (there were'nt any lines though. Also I can't get Calamus to boot with the fonts I have selected in the load font section from a previous session (yes I saved the set up after selecting the fonts). I have to manually load the fonts each session. The only font that loads automatically is the Swiss100 (I think). Also I printed the pretty girl graphic included on the program disk and the print was beautiful (no streaking etc.). Please someone tell me these aren't bugs! Thanks Jack BTW I've read the manual cover to cover. I assume your default font is Swiss100 which gets automatically loaded on boot. Personally I load my start the day template that is actually my letterhead CDK which contains the 2 fonts I most commonly use, in the correct sizes, the frames in the right position etc.. The Pretty Girl is a Vector Graphic, which explains the quality of the output which you should now get selecting 1X and Raster as I mentioned above for raster graphics as well. Nope, not bugs. :-) Jack, PLEASE BUY The Guide to Calamus Desktop Publishing, which should be available everywhere. It is everything the manual was not. (sigh) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 58 Fri Apr 10, 1992 R.MONFORT1 [LEXICOR] at 21:19 EDT Jack, I recommend "The Guide to Calamus Desktop Publishing" it makes learning Calamus so much easier. Now for the fonts try creating a sheet with the fonts that you use most often and saving it for future font use. Put your CDK document on the TOs 2.06 desktop so that you can double click on the ducument and it will loadup Calamus and also your sheet with fonts. Once you get familiar with Calamus try Calamus SL you will see hundreds(?) of new funtions. I am sure other will jumpin and will give you a helping hand. Ringo. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 60 Fri Apr 10, 1992 J.LEMLEY [Jack] at 23:34 EDT Nathan, I did try the 1X and RASTER setting but still had lots of streaking and lines. Any other suggestions? I'll get the Guide in the next couple of weeks (cash flowing out not in). I guess the answer to the font question is you have to load a ddoc with those fonts selected that you want loaded. Can a macro be created to accomplish that also? Everything else is great. I do wish the raster frame would print better. sigh! Thanks Jack Ringo, I like your idea of putting the CDK on the Desk!!! I'll give it a try. Thanks Jack ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 62 Sat Apr 11, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 09:03 EDT You can use a CDK or a PAGE or a STYLE saved with the fonts of your choice. I would love to get SL, but the need or the money is just not there right now. I would like to see an upgrade to 1.09 not that it doesn't have just about every feature I need, but it would be great to have the ability to rotate raster, vector, etc (for example). This evening I will upload a text file done my user Kyle Miller which shows most of the features in Calamus SL and also highlights a number which are also in Calamus 1.09N. Hopefully this will help you decide to buy 1.09N and eventually upgrade to Calamus SL. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 80 Wed May 20, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 13:20 EDT Text rotates 360 degrees in 10th of a degree increments, flawlessly and fast. Eventually there will be an S version BUT best as I can determine, it would simply be a crippled version of SL. I went with my WYNIWYG concept to compensate. One fact is certain; you will never be penalized for owning a earlier version of the software and Calamus 1.09N is a solid and excellent product! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 101 Sat May 30, 1992 J.LEMLEY [Jack] at 19:46 EDT Hi All! Got my Guide to Calamus Desktop Publishing yesterday. I learned more about the operation of 1.09N in the first 20 pages of it than in my TWICE reading of the official docs! Great book and (now that I know a little about the multitude of features in 1.09N) Great Program! Nathan you were right as were many others who told me shortly after obtaining 1.09N that the Guide was a must. I managed to pick up a used copy at a decent price. Talk about fast service, I ordered several upgrades the same day and you beat almost all of them from Canada. Even one company here in CA. Thank-you, it's greatly appreciated. And thank-you, also, for The Guide to Calamus... I guess I must have been quick too. Now I have one quick question. Is there a Calamus "S" in addition to "SL" and, if so, how do they vary. I "see" the "S" reference occasionally but I can't find it explained anywhere. In case it's not obvious, I'm already beginning to look ahead. SL, Outline Art... Oh my! For now, I look forward to some late nights while I learn the details of this program. So far, I'm impressed. I guess my initial reaction was, "wow, this sucker is FAST." Oh, can you write me a quick note to explain to my boss why I'm coming to work bleary-eyed?!!! Thanks, again, Pat ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 104 Fri Jun 12, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 08:37 EDT Get used to the fast response from us (we don't know any better) and to the fast output. :-) Calamus S was originally supposed to be a modular version of 1.09N. I'm not sure yet exactly what happened but apparently they added and interconnected so many features that they past a point that made it very difficult to release a crippled version of Calamus SL. So, all I've released is Calamus SL, but made it as easy as possible for someone to only obtain those particular modules that they might have wanted and not made them get them all etc.. There may yet be a Calamus S which will be some kind of disabled Calamus SL I guess. What is your boss's name and where do I address the letter. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 105 Fri Jun 12, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 20:55 EDT What would the chances of a Calamus 1.09N.01 tha runs in TT Fast RAM? Dave ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 134 Thu Oct 08, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 03:07 EDT Dave do you have anything else that uses GEM? Like Easy Draw? I know Calamus does the same thing swith the GEM files coming out of DynaCADD. I could load those into Easy Draw fine and save them out, then they would fine? I don't know why but it works.:-) If you want to send me one in E-Mail, I'll try it in SL for you. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 135 Thu Oct 08, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou (Sysop)] at 07:03 EDT Dave, maybe it was a GEM3 file. Since I bought Calamus, I haven't used Pagestream but once or twice. Calamus is so fast for printouts on the DJ500. All these years all I heard about was Calamus's conusing icons. I don't find them confusing at all, in fact they save me time. Email to ISD for prices and ordering info or call 416-479- 1880 with a VISA or MC number. Wally, there are tons of PD and Shareware fonts in Library 30. You can easily search for them by using CFN as the search word if you are using Aladdin. If not using Aladdin, M475;3 to the library and type 3 for search. Then enter your "CFN" search word. One thing the regulars here could help us with is when did Calamus SL come out? Seems like after that time alot of SL specific things are in the library and just looking at the brief listings of files thru my Aladdin saves don't really let you know the file is specific to SL. Looking thru one of the saved message files Mike Valent suggests file 13015 revised Calamus help file and 56 key/function key bindings plus a keyboard template. If you think you'll need a type style page 2 files I believe are in the libraries are FONTVIEW.ARC and SHOWFONT.ARC. Speaking of fonts if your on the West coast you might want to checkout the Codehead BBS they have alot of Calamus fonts. So folks is there any file that will give us the full browsed list of Calamus related files? Short descriptions can be confusing, example of this is the description of TIPLIST4 -- browsed list of tip files, the browsed list is almost all SL specific, not mentioned in the short description. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 156 Tue Nov 03, 1992 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 00:53 EST Howdy, Between Lou Rocha and Dave Gross I'm set until I can see and order (and be able to afford) some of those fonts. I just got a glimpse of a font named something along the lines of Triumverate...another "must have" in my book. I just found a short page of font types on the back of a page in the package Ed Krimen sent me...I think I've got fontitis. I just layed out a little doozey in 45 minutes, that would have taken me the better part of an entire day using my old DTP program. Not to mention the fact that I had to lay out three identical columns on one page (something I couldn't have even started in the five or so minutes it took me with Calamus). I won't even talk about the time it _used_ to take to print these things out. This job will more than pay for my new fonts. I'm so incredibly psyched. Thank you All for the help. I'm new to this section, and need some help. Having been supremely impressed with the results I've seen from Calamus 1.09N, I've pretty much decided to purchase a copy for myself; but I'm also wanting to purchase the new HP 600DPI laser printer. Can Calamus be used for this printer, and is it a good match? Is the initial page print speed the same as the SLM804? Can I print whatever fonts I purchase from ISD, or am I limited to the fonts resident in the HP printer? I know some of these must be pretty basic questions, but hey, I'm brand new to this. Any help would be appreciated! Regards, Charlie ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 162 Sat Nov 14, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 17:02 EST Charlie, welcome aboard the Calamus train! To ansv r your questions, DMC Publishing is currently investigating the new HP4 and will make every effort to provide those drivers ASAP. However, as with most HP products, the current Calamus printer drivers should work with that printer (obviously not including 600 dpi output). As for fonts, Calamus uses scalable outline vector fonts which are drawn both on screen and in RAM for your printer. So, no, you are definitely not limited to the resident printer fonts. With Calamus you can scale fonts from 1 point to 999.9 points (72 points = 1 inch). With Calamus SL the sizes possibilities are even greater. There are also hundreds of Calamus fonts and clip art files, plus archived messages in Library 30 and 13 here on GEnie. I suggest you download CAL_LIB1.LZH which was just released. It provides over 100 pages of Calamus file descriptions for you to browse and download at your leisure. I would also recommend you download the file CAL_FEAT.TXT 24155 for a 20 page listing of Calamus 1.09N features compared to Calamus SL. This will certainly demonstrate the many powerful features of Calamus. Charlie, when you buy Calamus 109.N be sure to register immediately. A newsletter is about to go out that announces an incredible sale on Compugraphic, ITC, Linotype and URW fonts (as well as other Calamus related topics). This is going to be a HOT Christmas for Calamus users! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 163 Sat Nov 21, 1992 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 22:08 EST Howdy again, again, When I set the following lines (in my CALAMUS.HLP file) to use the keypad all I get for the key commands for each command in the indicator window is ">", and using the Alt-keypad number doesn't work...I don't get it. To TOGGLE between Create a new frame or modify the existing frame, simply click the right mouse button. Ok Wally ;-) first of all, backup your Calamus.HLP file please. Now load the file into your favorite word processor or mine, the Calamus Text Editor. You can change the help message if you wish by retyping it. Remember to leave a space between the # and the message. Do NOT change the numbers. If you want to change or assign a key binding code, make sure that you leave at least one space between the message and the key binding. You can bind any key from the keyboard BUT I don't think they ever activated the use of key bindings from the numeric keypad. And this probably lies at the root of your problem I just realized. Please do not use the numeric keypad. You can use any combination of keys (upper or lower case). Wally, I apologize for not responding to this immediately. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 173 Sat Dec 05, 1992 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 01:36 EST Howdy, Wow, what a bummer; I bought this program with the understanding it was 1.09N. The guy I bought it from must not have realized it either. As soon as I get the check my bank is sending me I'll be upgrading to 1.09N for the time being (by the middle of next week, I suppose). Since I'm already here... I'll go ahead and send in my Calamus disks with the upgrade order. Should I also send in my Font Editor disks? Which should I get first, Outline Art or Invision Elite? I want to know how people are creating black backgrounds with inverse lettering... The way I'm doing it (with Touch Up) is the kludge of the computing world. Regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 174 Sat Dec 05, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 08:54 EST Keep the Font Editor disks. They've never changed. Outline Art is a VECTOR graphic drawing program. Invision Elite handles RASTER graphics real well. :-) You can easily do black backgrounds on white letters IN CALAMUS Wally. :-) Create a black raster frame. Place type on it. Select color 0 for the type style, making it white. If you had 1.09N you could simply define the percentage of black for your letters. This feature does not exist in 1.09.6. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 175 Sat Dec 05, 1992 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 09:43 EST Wally, I do not believe you have to send in disks when upgrading. Just email your registration number to [ISD] along with a VISA/MC. If you want to write a cheque, attach a note with your name, address and registration number. I would suggest you get INVISION Elite as many Outline Art features are available in the Vector Graphic module of Calamus SL ... when you eventually upgrade to it! ;-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 176 Sat Dec 05, 1992 LYRE at 14:55 EST Wally, I would also recommend Invision Elite. It is a very good program with a very intuitive user interface. Every option in Touch-Up that I have ever used is in IE except for the standard Atari fills. Other then that and the Save Clip function, my usage of Touch-Up is for art file conversion. Here's to waiting for checks in the mail. Regards, Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 178 Sun Dec 06, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 02:53 EST Wally, If your just wanting to do text effects and general graphic type things you'd be better off with Outline Art. I still use it instead of the Vector program in SL. I don't really like the way it works. I'd rather have Outline in Color.:-) Invision is more of an Art program and it won't use your Calamus fonts. The idea thing would be to get both as they both of specific uses in which the excel.:-) But I prefer Outline for doing my graphic type things then Invision for touching up scanned images. Personally, I think my Outline paid for itself the first month.:-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 179 Sun Dec 06, 1992 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 23:00 EST Howdy, Joey - Hmmm... Fonts in Outline Art... Hmmm... Thanks. Wally ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 180 Sat Dec 12, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:30 EST For those of you that might be new on GEnie or new to this area, allow me to take this opportunity to point out that we do get a great deal of traffic here. To make things easier, once messages reach the 200 mark or so, they are automatically archived (cleaned and compressed) and placed in the Atari Library #13 for your downloading pleasure. This allows you the ability to download past messages and read them at your leisure. To get to this library, type m475;3. Then select 8 (SET Library) and SET to library 13, the archival library. If you then do a search by Calamus, you'll get a complete list of all available Calamus messages. For that matter, the same logic applies to all the relevant messsage areas. Any of the hardware and software get archived in the same fashion, with the exception of Category 18 (Flames) and other reasonable facsimile's. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 181 Sat Dec 12, 1992 J.PIERCE5 [Rob] at 19:59 EST I have a question for all you Calamus 1.09N experts: I want to flow some text around an object. When using the Flow Around icon, it flows around the Frame, not just the object. In otherwords (and for example), I have an image of some fruit. It forms a flat-looking pyramid (sort of). The frame, though, is a wide rectangle. What I want to do is flow the text around the actual object, rather than the frame. How can I do this? I hope this makes sense. I want the text to flow around the shape of the actual object. Thanks! Rob ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 182 Sun Dec 13, 1992 S.LIVERSIDGE [STEVE L] at 08:59 EST Rob (re irregular text flow): The way I used to do it was create a number of empty frames (raster frames with everything transparent worked well, I remember) to roughly trace the shape you wanted your text to flow around. Then flow the text around those frames. A bit Rube Goldberg-ish, but it worked. Steve L. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 183 Sun Dec 13, 1992 POTECHIN [Nathan @ DMC] at 14:28 EST As Steve mentioned, there is no single command for "irregular text flow". It will be necessary for you to either follow Steve's suggestion above, using little frames and selecting them all and then flowing around them OR by using multiple text rules and left or right indents. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 184 Sun Dec 20, 1992 T.PLOWMAN [BEER GOD] at 21:39 EST Help me! I'm having a little problem with Calamus. I've been trying to cut a frame from one page and paste it to another, but as soon as I paste the frame to the new page and attempt to move it or make any changes to it I get the fatal internal error message from Calamus. What gives? Is it something simple that I'm overlooking? I've looked through the manual and I believe I'm doing it correctly according to the manual. If anyone has any ideas I would certainly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance, Tom. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 185 Sun Dec 20, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 23:59 EST Tom, I'm just a bumbling user, but this kind of thing has happened to me upon occasion, and I've found a few means of coping. ;-) Try doing a garbage collection right before your move...This will clean up memory. (I can't remember exactly what the menu item is called, but it's some- thing about "Statistics".) Save your file ! Then click on the clipboard icon, cut the frame to the clipboard, move to your new page, and paste the frame to the new page. The SAVE your file! Then see if you can move it. If you get the fatal error at this point, when you reboot and reload, your frame will at least have progressed to the desired page. Hope some part of this scenario addresses the quirk you've encountered. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 186 Mon Dec 21, 1992 POTECHIN [RT~Sysop] at 09:58 EST Assuming you have 1.09N, the first thing that occurs to me is to ask if the frame you are CUTTING is a text frame which just happens to be part of a text chain. CUTTING it without first deleting it from the chain would be certain DEATH!! Otherwise, Dorothy's suggestion is bang on. Please let us know and Dorothy, thanks for posting. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 187 Tue Dec 22, 1992 T.PLOWMAN [BEER GOD] at 01:44 EST Nathan- The frame in question is a group frame which contains a text chain. However, the chain is self-contained in the group frame and has no ties to the page from which it's being cut (at least as far as I know, but I'll check it out). Thanks for the replies Dorothy and Nathan, I appreciate the help! Good day, Tom. Okay, I removed all of the piping from the frames within the group frame and everything is just dandy now. Thanks again for the help. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 188 Mon Dec 28, 1992 WALLY.W [ _Wally_ ] at 23:56 EST Howdy, Well, after a week and one-half with no mail (due to weather, of course), I finally received my 1.09N (that's an "N") upgrade. I've already found a couple things other than what you'd mentioned (Nathan), and it doesn't appear to be as prone to 'fatal internal' errors (like, none so far). Thanks for the great products, and keep up the good work. I'll prolly be back with a couple questions sooner or later. Best regards, Wally I hope everyone's holiday season has been treating them properly, and would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 189 Tue Dec 29, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 00:51 EST Wally, I'm a devoted user of N. I want to make a large text box and add three items in the box with the first at the right, the second in the center, and the third to the left, The items would be Volume #, date, and Issue #, withthe obvious changes made as needed each month. In timeworks it is quite easy to set up such a text box and have the items come out Just. Rt., Ctr. and just. lft. Hoe, opps, how can I do this in Calamus Thanks. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 196 Tue Jan 19, 1993 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 23:33 EST I don't know what the _real_ way to do this is, but I set up three separate text boxes. Each one has different centering attributes according to its position. I do this for headings in various newsletters I publish, so I believe I understand what you are trying to do. --Also a former Timeworks user ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 197 Sat Jan 23, 1993 GREEN at 00:26 EST Thanks, D.A. That is what I am presently doing, I hoped that here was a better way with this great program. (know what makes o it great from a a GDOS users /Timeworks perspective? Scaleable Fonts!) 8s ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 198 Sun Jan 31, 1993 B.ROBINSON5 [BRIANMATE] at 14:41 EST Reply to GREEN Message 195 Tue Jan 19 I don't know if this is the best way for your problem with justified text, but it works for me. Create a text frame and use PKS Write to enter your Volume #, Date and Issue #. Select write and return to main page. Then insert a ruler in front of each line for right, center and left. Each week, just use PKS Write to alter the details making sure not to erase any of the rulers and your text will come out just fine. Brian Robinson. ------------
