I can't seem to find anyone who knows its capabilites in the professional arena. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE FALCON IN THE STUDIO!!! ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 2 Sat Jun 12, 1993 ARCHIVIST [Charlie] (Forwarded) R.Randolph, I'd love to. I'm not sure this is the best category for it, though. Perhaps Brian could move this to category 10, Sound and Music. Frankly I'm not sure how much impact the Falcon will have in the professional studio. I think it will become a standard in the Home Studio very quickly though. It will likely have a big impact on the Indie market because of it's low cost and high quality. As the owner of a professional studio you're likely to see people bringing in their demo 'tapes' for final work on removable media in the future. Life is going to be interesting. :-) Charlie/sysop ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 3 Sat Jun 12, 1993 POTECHIN [Nathan] at 22:06 EDT James Grunke is more than qualified to discuss this. Nathan @ DMC ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 4 Sun Jun 13, 1993 JAMES-GRUNKE [James] at 21:52 EDT Hi Folks, F030 in the studio is sure to be a valuable tool.. for pros and semi-pros alike. Consider the records cut with the venerable 1040. Using MIDI apps of course. Digital audio opens a whole new ballgame for Atari technology. For home users, the F030 offers high quality Crystal DACs, on-board. Pro users may elect to add on external hardware... providing XLR IO, AES-EBU, SPDIF, etc. STs are used with AMEK TAC pro automation consoles. ($100K +) At NAB, they had voice cue'd automation with a human voice giving instructions from the ST 8 bit audio outs. The British accent slayed me... :) The largest TV show in terms of worldwide viewing audience, Sabato Gigante uses AMEK products to mix down the show. Thanks for your support and keep up the chatter out there. James ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 5 Sun Jun 13, 1993 ATARI.BENLUX [W. Kilwinger] (Forwarded) Falcon030 in a professional recording studio: I have some interesting points. I installed the Falcon030 in 2 studio's so far and there are some things you should know. 1 of those studio's was from Radio Nederland World Broatcast. In general the sound was suprisely (for studio use) good. I can imagen that you use one of the external audio analog/digital boxes that become available (and will give you full 8 channel in/output). In that case quality is depanding on that box but in general real good for professional use. The following applies for using the internal audio cirquits of the Falcon030: On the audio output cirquit Atari installed a Bass boost doing 6db at 100hz till 0db at 1000hz. This is to improve the audio on 'walk-man' speakers/haedphones that have a bad low frequency respons. You probable have to correct this with your studio equipment. Further most studio's are symmetric and offcource the Falcon030 is asymmetric so you need a little adaptor to convert (which is quite normal for a lot of other equipment too). If you don't convert than you might here some buzz. The Falcon030 audio input is on microphone level not on line out level, you probable need some weakening of the incomming signal. For home use this can be done by adding 220KOhm in series with the left and right channel but for studio use I think there are better (more quality) ways to do it. I'm currently doing some experiments so I can't give it to you now. Probable you can arrange this also with your studio equipment. If you use the Falcon030 audio connectors be aware that some manufacturers make connectors that won't fit correctly since they are slightly too small. I have seen that several times. Oh Yes, be carefully while starting up audio applications since in most applications you will hear the audio matrix switching during setup and if the volume of your equipment is high I'm sure your tweeters won't like that. (This probable counts more for P.A. than for studio's) Regards, Wilfred ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 6 Mon Jun 14, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:27 EDT Love that blank verse, Jim. Is anyone here CURRENTLY using a FALCON in the studio? If so, how do you like it, and, what software do you run? James Grunke's comments were informative. I would like to hear more from you James, about the FALCON. I don't need to be sold on the ST, 'cause I have 4 of them and love them all. I have used ATARI in the studio for almost 6 years and there GREAT! I am running the new Tascam DA-88's, so I am just getting into DIGITAL. I know very little about the FALCON. (elusive bird isn't it) It really interests me, and I am very seriously considering the purchase of one. First though I need to know if it will do what I want. Regards, Wilfred ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 16 Wed Jun 23, 1993 R.SNYDER6 [Roger S.] at 20:26 EDT David, A headphone output is usually an attenuated power amp output (i.e. the line that goes to your speakers). Sometimes it has its own power amp (such as in tape recorders or CD players). These outputs are controlled by the volume control, but idealy I don't think you would want to use these into a microphone input. --Roger S. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 17 Wed Jun 23, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 22:54 EDT Roger, the reason I asked about headphone output is that MUSICOM actually recommends using the headphone output for recording. I've tried it and it seems to work OK depending on how you set your volume and input levels. The Falcon is unballanced ( so what's new ... no sweat) BIG QUESTION.. what are the S/N, freq response specs on the mic level front end? attenuating a nice clean wide dynamics signal to slam it through an unnesseccary mic opreamp is pretty annoying.. what's it take to bypas the mic preamp and go right to the last line level stage ahead of the A->D convertor? clean . real line in/line out ports on this are a real want here... even if they gotta be -10db hifi levels. my 150$ cassette deck does this.. (I can't even BUY a cassette deck with mic preamps anymore!) why the crazyness on the Falcon? Why build a digital deluxe Mr Microphone and then try to sell it to serious audio workpeople? I thought Larry was handling it, Larry thought Gordon was, and Gordon thought I was. So it didn't get handled. I've re-uploaded the file so it should appear at the top of the file list sometime tonight. I just have to clear a few files ahead of it. BTW, from reading the manual it looks like this recorder doesn't pay very close attention to files already present on your harddisk. The doc's mention that it will start recording at the first free blocks on your HD and keep going until it reaches the end. It's not clear if it would over-write any files... but it might be a very good idea to de-frag your HD before playing with this program. You would get better read/write performance that way, anyhow. You are right, it politely asks if it may use the latest partition on UNIT 4 (which is the internal IDE drive), if you comfirm and record data than your latest partition doesn't have a directory structure anymore so all other files are lost. That's why I clearly stated READ THE MANUAL FIRST ! It is not that dramatic as it sounds as long as you remember that you need an empty latest partition on any drive you wish to use for DAME recording and editing. You might skip installation on UNIT 4 and than it will do recording/editing in memory, just for tests of the program this might be usefull. Anybody with problems how to pass the opening screen ? I finally got D.A.M.E. up and running. This program is very complex with only the sketchiest of documentation. Any help and tips from fellow Falconers would be greatly appreciated. It took me an hour just to figure out how to record longer than 1.5 second soundbites. I've done my first overdubs, but I still don't know what most of the icons mean. I've noticed that the file created on my last partition can't be removed from the desktop :-( I'm not sure if DELETE WORKSPACE actually deletes the file or just blanks it. From all indications I think D.A.M.E. has taken my F partition hostage. Oh well I wasn't planning to use it for anything but sound anyway. This program looks like its going to have a very steep learning curve. But it also looks like it will be a quite powerful tool once I've tamed it. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 29 Sat Jun 26, 1993 BRIAN.H [ST~SysOp] at 17:06 EDT Dave, the topic started just find. My care package from Atari arrived today. I am having a blast with D2D Demo which, to my surprise, seems to have greater editing, sound fx, and overdubbing capabilities than I had been led to believe. In fact it seems to easily allow unlimited stereo overdubs so long as your sampling rate is 33 kHz or less. Until one of the combination sampler/midi programs in the works comes along, D2D demo will suit me just fine. Musicom was severely limited, Winrec was a little better, D.A.M.E. was incomprehensible, but D2D Demo is great! I may upload a few later tonight. I've found that the easiest way for me to get sounds into my Falcon is to record them first onto a cassette using a good cassette deck, then put the cassette into a walkman which I can place right next to my Falcon and manipulate easily. Plug the headphone out of the Walkman into the microphone input of the Falcon, adjust input levels if necessary (although I found it easier just to adjust the headphone volume on the walkman), set SAM to record (but don't click OK yet) and then turn on the Walkman amd listen. When you get to the part you want just click on OK. Click the left mouse when you're done recording and use SAM to edit to taste. It's easy! Most samples don't need a very high quality or fidelity setting or even need to be in stereo to sound quite good. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 36 Sat Jul 17, 1993 W.DEAN4 [D'noski] at 00:15 EDT Question? Oh, and an ADAT compatable optical interface, and a DA-88 interface (can't leave Tascam out). This would allow direct digital I/O between DAT and F030 for editing purposes. When that hardware and supporting software becomes available, I'll get one. What I want is a system that will allow me to remove tracks from my ADAT, play them in sync with the ADAT, and allow for editing and flying back to tape. Then after mix time, use the system for editing the 2 trk master. All transfers being digital of course. Some hardware guru should jump on this since there are about 15,000 ADATs out there. Atari lives! ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 40 Thu Jul 22, 1993 D.LIGHT2 [DPL] at 01:14 EDT D'noski, Things do look promising for the Falcon/ADAT (or DA-88). I only hope that someone pops an optical I/O, or at least an AES/EBU for digital transfers. With SP-DIF or AES/EBU you could use the Alesis AI-1 unit. It converts 2 trks from an ADAT (trks 1/2,3/4,....) to and from optical to both AES/EBU and SP- DIF. It also does sample rate conversions (something I like to avoid, but..). This would get digital audio into the Falcon (any respectable I/O box would have at least SP-DIF). The problem then would be getting the Falcon to lock up to the ADAT. Cubase Audio could probably do this by syncing to the same SMPTE/MTC source as your ADAT. Wow, it just might work! DPL ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 41 Thu Jul 22, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 19:44 EDT I've been thinking about building a sampler using components at hand. The Falcon can record a digital signal directly through its mic. input and save it to some sort of file. Hopefully one of the digital editing programs like Avalon could read this file. Since the falcon has audio outputs I should be able to listen to the sample through my audio system while editing. When the sample is prepared to my satisfaction, I can then save it as a standardized file and dump it to my T3, as soon as I get the sample dump upgrade. The only flaw is portability but this could be solved by purchasing one of the Peavy modules, (SX or SP, I can't remember which.) One neat feature I remember is that the program can remove all the dead air from your digital recordings and also create "ghost" copies of digital segments. This greatly reduces the amount of HD space your recordings take up. I bought the latest version of Cubase so I could get a break in the update costs and the program looks like it is running in ST HIGH resolution. Before anyone comments, it is running in a 640 x 480 16 color res and it does use the whole screen. What I am saying is that it looks rather plain. I was hoping the Cubase Audio would be prttier to look at. Also, what kind of digital effects did it support internally? Could you load external DSP modules? ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 52 Sun Oct 24, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 14:28 EDT Sorry Spud but I really don't remember if there was any color in Cubase Audio, and I don't remember the specific DSP FX it used or how it loaded them. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 53 Wed Nov 03, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 23:40 EST Well, I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm going to take the plunge and purchase CUBASE AUDIO FALCON! I never thought I'd ever pay this much money for a piece of software, but the main reason I bought my Falcon last May was for its promise of multitrack digital audio and midi driven sample sequencing. 6 months later, only CAF lives up to that promise. I was disappointed with Musicom 1, D2D Demo, D.A.M.E., and Winrec. None of them can multitrack. (D2D Demo can do rudimentary overdubs but they are impossible to mix or otherwise control and they quickly overwhelm earlier takes.) I was unwilling to spend $595 on D2D 4T-FX, feeling that it was too much to charge for a first generation piece of software that only allows 4 tracks and which nobody here on GEnie seems to own. I was also unwilling to spend $595 on Digitape (but I would have eagerly paid the originally quoted $199 for it.) Musicom 2 looms on the horizon, but I can't get any details as to what it will do or what it will cost. All I know for sure is that it won't be hard for it to beat Musicom 1. And then I saw CAF demo'd at the Glendale Atari Show. It was the single most awesome piece of software I'd ever seen or heard in my life. Ordinary Cubase without Digital Audio is already an incredible program. Add digital audio into that same intuitive graphic interface together with pinpointable DSP FX and you've got God in your computer. There was just one problem. $999! And then along came Curt Fluegel of the Guitar Center. I don't think I can state his price right here. But if you're at all interested in this program you had better send E-mail to C.FLUEGEL fast! He has a limited time only introductory price that presents an offer you can't refuse. Now my only problem is that I need a great big SCSI external hard drive. If anyone here has any recommendations or offers in this regard (I can't spend more than 4 or 5 hundred dollars) please speak up. I'd like to know what kind of minimum specs I need for D2D recording. Curt says the access time should be 12-15 ms, but I've also heard that the data transfer rate is also important. I'm considering a Maxtor 345 meg HD, but I have no idea if its transfer rate is adequate. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 54 Thu Nov 04, 1993 W.DEAN4 [D'noski] at 00:31 EST David, what are some of the DSP features offered by Cubase Audio Falcon........D'noski ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 55 Thu Nov 04, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 01:12 EST Re DSP FX, I don't recall exactly which FX are included. What I was more interested in, and what the Steinberg rep confirmed for me, was that I would easily be able to zero in on a single note and add echo to just that note, or add flange phasing to just one measure of one track, etc. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 56 Fri Nov 05, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 23:03 EST David, I am also getting Cubase Audio. I have a standing order in with the Computer Studio. So as soon as Sheldon gets it, he'll send me my copy. I bought my Hard Drive from Toad computers. The reason was they are close by (hour and a half) and are knowledgable. They also have one of the best cases going. I'm getting mine in a 4-bay tower-like case. It has two fans and a hefty power supply. I plan on installing a tape backup drive in bay #2 and will have 3 and 4 ready for more drives as I need em...maybe a removable. Check the specs with CA, but I think any SCSCI II drive will do the trick. Oh yeah, Toad ships HD's free and it comes complete with one of those hard to find Falcon SCII cables. I agree with your sentiments on other HD recorders for the Falcon. I believe that Cubase Audio will be THE standard by which all other recorders are judged. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 57 Sat Nov 06, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 10:23 EST I sent my check for CAF to The Guitar Center in Roseville, Minnesota yesterday. So hopefully I'll have it in hand in a week or two. I probably could have got it quicker at the Guitar Center in L.A., but since Curt Fluegel is at the Roseville store and posted the original great offer, I gave him my business. I ordered a Maxtor 345 meg SCSI II external drive from Demand Systems in Camarillo,CA my local Atari Dealer. The price was $448 which isn't bad for an external. And they promised to get it into "Plug & Play" condition for me, formatted to order with the proper cable, ID#, terminator setting, etc. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 58 Sat Nov 06, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 17:20 EST David, I guess you and I are in the same boat. We both are in the Wait-For-It-To- Get-Here mode. Has anyone decided on a good way to backup these big drives? I would like to use DAT but a regular tape back-up would probably do a good job too. Can anyone expand on these two options (or any other they know of). ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 59 Sun Nov 07, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 11:56 EST I'll be sending out my check to The Guitar Center tomorrow. I'm opting for a 1.2 gig HD. I sent GEmail to Toad Computers asking about a price for that size HD built into a case with a comparible tape back-up system. I considered the DAT option but how in the world would you interface the computer with the DAT machine? Would the computer recognize the DAT as a SCSI-2 device? How would the software deal with it. I know that Diamondback 3 allows back-up to tape but I don't know about DAT. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 60 Mon Nov 08, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 21:01 EST Flakes, From what I understand, there will be a digital interface made by the Cubase folks that will act let you use DAT to backup your music data. I don't know how it will work, but on other systems I think they just play the music in realtime and you digitally record the info on DAT. Does anyone else know more about this? ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 61 Tue Nov 09, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] at 19:35 EST Spud Boy, I guess that would work OK, but you'd only be able to use 2 tracks per tape. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 62 Tue Nov 09, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 21:28 EST Flakes, Hmmm, I don't know how it is actually implemented. I was just guessing. I sent in my Cubase 3.02 dongle today. My upgrade for Cubase Audio should arrive within a week...I'm counting the days! Does anyone else use any other program to fo Hard Disk recording on the Falcon? ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 63 Sat Nov 13, 1993 G.NORTON [Falcon Systm] at 13:42 EST Spud Boy, What sort of $$ is Steinberg charging for the upgrade? I haven't heard anything other than the MSL price. Graham @ Falcon Systems ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 64 Sat Nov 13, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 17:12 EST Falcon Systm, Steinberg is asking (and getting -grin-) $437.50. This will get you from 3.02 to Cubase Audio Falcon. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 65 Sun Nov 14, 1993 B.AEIN [B Man] at 00:54 EST Spud, What was the upgrade price? Is it cheaper to upgrade than to get CBA for $599? Bman ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 66 Mon Nov 15, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 23:04 EST I was able to buy Cubase 3.02 for $399. Plus the $437.50 gives me Cubase Audio for $836.50. If you can find it for less than that then go for it. I think there still is a trade in offer for Notator users though. As far as I know Cubase Audio retails for $999. Of course it does depend on where you shop. I just can't wait for it to get here. I am expecting it to arrive in the mail this week. I will definitely let everyone know what I find out. ------------ Category 10, Topic 12 Message 67 Fri Nov 19, 1993 B.AEIN [B Man] at 00:04 EST Spud, There is an add on Genie selling CBA for $599 Bman ------------
