Is there a significant advantage (or better still what are the advantages) of going to TOS2.06 instead of staying with TOS 1.04 + NEODESK + UIS etc. I'm NOT intereasted in 1.44 floppy capacity (DSDS is fine). I do know that some software will not run on 2.06 like the Spectrum Holobyte flight simms and Cyberpaint (I think). I'm not sure what else won't run, and no one has offered any reply to my question about this in the TOS 2.06 RT. Although I don't play the flight simms all that often I do enjoy them once and while. I do however use Cyberpaint more often. So that's it. I do have a MEGASTE at home and it does seem to be a bit faster than my MEGA4 with a T16 + NEODESK etc... It is called T205COMP.something (LZH or ZIP). I do need to update it. Hmmm - 2.0x vs. 1.04+NeoDesk. Hard call. I do believe, besides adding the NewDesk desk top that has many (not all!) of the features of Neodesk, that many of the internal routines were cleaned up. Cookie Jar support was added and maybe some extra system calls. Oh yes, 2.0x adds the capability of recognizing 'alternate' ram. (AKA TT Ram.) So if anyone ever comes out with a ram expansion board to take us above 4 megs, 2.0x or above will be needed. It STILL has problems with rts/cts handshaking on the serial port! Of course you will save ram/gain speed with 2.0x vs. NeoDesk (depending on how you have NeoDesk set up). I actually stopped using NeoDesk for a while after I got my MSTe. Now that I have Geneva, NeoDesk is back! With either configuration, Warp9 is a necessity! I'm not trying to be a smart a** either. I really want to know the answer to this. I'd really like to hear from the CHs themselves on this. Here we are in the CHs topic area, who make Hotwire and MaxiFile, Which have virtually completely stopped me from using a Desktop, and people are still asking about Desktops. Why??? I really don't get it. Is there ANY reason why people what to upgrade from 1.4 when they have Hotwire and Maxi for a LOT less? Well, obviously there is, but what are the reasons. I'm honestly interested, because I almost never go to the desktop anymore. I only go there if I want to quickly check out a picture I loaded into Warp9 or if I'm maybe setting up something new and for some reason need to experiment there or something like that. And then 1.4 is always sufficient. I've always thought of Hotwire and Maxi as a replacement to a desktop. Am I wrong in this? For all normal everyday use, I never look at the Desktop. I like the TT desktop With the operation system keyboard commands, that you can configure to your likeing. On the TT you can Func-keys to launch up to 20 programs. You can install Icons on the desktop for Folders, programs, etc and you may launch a program by draging a, say a text file, to an icon of WP and the WP will execute with that document installed. You can have color in the Icons, change screen color at will, change resolution from Keyboard, Set a file mask for looking for specific files and a number of other advantages. I believe TOS 2.06 and up have these capabilities. Plus the fact at least the TT is much faster than the mega st and Stacy. To each his own. I beleive in using the Operating system as much as possible to save as memory for intensive programs. Remember W.D., me and Operating systems. HotWire and MaxiFile are extensions of our thought processes. We wanted the Atari to operate exactly as our minds did so that's what we created. There is no faster, more efficient way to use Atari computers and I doubt that anyone could perform the same tasks with any other environment faster than Charles or I could with our "computer/mind link". Of course, that doesn't mean that everyone thinks the same way or has the same desire to eliminate needless actions. It also requires a bit of dedication on the user's part to thoroughly learn the capabilities of the software because not all of the features are as intuitive as the basic ones available when first installed. We've given up long ago trying to force our "virtual brains" on anyone else. If you like it, use it. If not, we won't force you. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 24 Sun Jan 16, 1994 OUTRIDER [Terry] at 15:00 EST Mike, You can "point and click forever" _with_ HotWire/MaxiFile. Although both offer hot keys for everything, they don't force you to use the hot keys. For example, you can point and click on up to 54 programs in any single HotWire screen, or point and click on a selection to bring up yet another 54 programs, and on and on and on. I personally love hot keys, but even if I didn't, I still would use HotWire/MaxiFile, because they offer the best of _both_ worlds. __ /erry .\\ay ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 25 Sun Jan 16, 1994 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 16:21 EST I always loved the desktop when I first got my Atari. Then I got Neodesk because it did so much more. Then I started building macros for everything. Then I discoverd Hotwire/Maxifile, (unbelievably, too many years later), which to me is the fastest way to go. When you know what your tasks are, there are no faster way to do them then with Hotwire.Maxifile with one key click away. A desktop is a great way to learn. It's such a wonderfuly intuative and visual medium. I havent' ventured into Geneva enough to know if it's key assignment will replace Hotwire. I do love the way it gives alternative key commands in various menus. I think my ultimate system will be Geneva managed by Hotwire. John B. P.S. I think Hotwire/Maxifile, Geneva/Neodesk, are all wonderful products and the choice of use is a matter of taste. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 26 Sun Jan 16, 1994 MIKE-ALLEN [NM~SysOp] at 17:06 EST Terry and John, You both have some very valid points. I didn't mean to denigrate the way other folks use their Ataris. I must admit that I am a little lazy. I don't want to put a great deal of effort into starting to realize the benefits of a particular piece of software. I am one of those guys who RTFM, but constant use and rereferencing to the manual is my way of learning software. If I can't at least begin to use the software after a few tries, I'll scrap it. That's what happend to me with STDCAT. This is NOT to say that CodeHead stuff falls in this category. It certainly does not. Their apps and utilities that I have are well documented and easy to start up. (As a matter of fact, their documentation goes far beyond the call of duty and explains much of the guts and feathers of not only their software, but other folks software and the Atari machine.) The CodeHeads have obtained, if not Godhood, at least Sainthood in my estimation. I have many of their products (and they my money ) and my Atari wouldn't be complete without CodeHead (and Little Green Footballs) products. The matter of personal choice when using an Atari was really brought to my attention at Glendale through a couple of incidents. Kenne was kind enought to loan us his MSTe for the GEnie booth. Kenne is a HotWire/MaxiFile afficianado. He also prefers text to icons. (I prefer icons) I had a devil of a time finding my way around his machine even though I use an MSTe at home. (HotWire kept popping up at the strangest times. ) I finally got familiar enough with it that I could at least use Aladdin and CodeCopy on it. Our on-line MSTe at the show was mainly using Flash - a favorite of several of the SysOps. I wanted to use Aladdin on it so I asked one of the other SysOps how to exit Flash - the response was "The same way you exit Aladdin." Well, I exit Aladdin by dropping down the File menu and clicking on Quit. What the SysOp meant was that alt-X is the hot key for exiting Aladdin AND what Flash uses to exit. There was no way I could exit Flash the same way *I* exit Aladdin - there was no menu bar! Sometimes I have to use hot keys - maybe there isn't a menu option or, as in the case of the Aladdin Copy Command, the menu doesn't work but the hot key does. I just prefer the menu path. One of the strengths of the Atari platform, with appropriate 3rd party software, is that it seems to be infinately variable in its configuration. Users can configure it to their own particular tastes. Viva la difference. This, I think, is great. HotWire and MaxiFile are two of the few CodeHead products I don't have. I do use MultiFile from MDD and am impressed enough that I will probably purchase MaxiFile in the near future. I'm not sure that HotWire would fit into the way I use my machine, but bless the CodeHeads for giving me the option. ('71 survivor, Canoga Park) Frank L ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 41 Mon Jan 17, 1994 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 21:44 EST We're OK here. The power finally came on about 3PM. I didn't really have a chance to log on until now anyway, but if the power hadn't come back on, I was going to log on with a portable. The top of the chimney (above the roof) fell. There were still a number of bricks loose up there, so I went up and knocked out everything that was loose. We've had 200-300 aftershocks today. The quake was centered in Northridge, about 20 miles from here. But this was definitely the worst one I've felt (I know I said that last time, too). We've been cleaning up on and off all day, mostly broken plates, vases, etc. Our china and crystal survived quite well, though, with only one champagne glass breaking. It's strange what breaks and what doesn't. We had three vases on top of a 7- foot cabinet. One stayed up there. Another fell and broke, and the third fell on a hardwood floor and _didn't_ break. The computer offices are on the third floor and definitely got hit the hardest. Two monitors fell on the floor. The Atari SC1224 fell from shoulder height. It looks OK, but I haven't fired it up yet. The other one was the Mac monitor. It landed upside down and almost pulled the computer down with it. It works as if nothing happened. The rest of my equipment is just fine and the two drives that were powered on during the quake seem to be OK. The power went out about 1-2 seconds after the quake started, so the drives would have been auto-parking almost instantly. Cases like this make me glad that I don't have a UPS. Still, I've got some great pictures of the mess. The floor was strewn with CDs, magazine, developer books, and glare/radiation shields (I ended up stepping on one and broke it ) as well as whatever else the severe shaking decided to throw. One laser printer and its stand tipped to a 45 degree angle, leaning against a monitor, but it's OK too. The cats are quite upset. Sam has spent most of the day under the bed. We comforted Muki for a while right after the quake, but then she disappeared somewhere in the house and we can't find her. See Flat, In retrospect, my answer about a Geneva-compatible HotWire was a little snide. The project is currently on hold and we hope to return to it soon. There is no projected release date. Mike, The time saved with HotWire is not just in the keypress vs. a double-click on an icon. Far more time is saved by having everything on one screen in front of you, whether you hit a key or click the mouse (once). There's no need to open drives and dig into folders. That's what I hate about using the desktop. John P.S. During her testimony, Lorena spoke of her wedding. When it becomes not fun to use a computer it's time to do house chores! :-) Warrl, You have your hand on the mouse every second you are using your computer? Alternative key commands are definitly faster. without a doubt. No contest. Example: A program is seven folders deep. Is it faster to shuttle through windows to get to it, or to hit one key? The next fastest way is to have an Icon on the desktop but there is a limit to this. In Hotwire, you just hit one key and you have another 50 or so prg to choose from. Not too mention the gazillion other features. ;-) ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 43 Mon Jan 17, 1994 DABRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 22:10 EST So relieved you made it through. Also multiple filters so you could see all types of executable files only, for all types of doc files only, for example. I believe the current filter will either show only one type, or show all but one type. And Hotwire could benefit from the ability to use the clipboard to cut and paste individual or non-sequential entries between setups. The current way of marking, saving, loading, and pasting blocks of entries is nice for a group of entries, but not very efficient for just one or two. We're now back in Germany... as of noon today. Geez, looked like we left Cali just in time... we left Los Angeles 48 hrs before the quake and flew out of SF at midnite, 4 1/2 hours before the BIG one hit. When we arrived in Ohio the next morning we heard about all the mess. Was really scary to see those roads all torn up and realizing that we had just driven around on them a few days ago. Hmmm... Gee, John, after having met our kids, doesn't it seem a little unfair that your house survived THEM -- only to be damaged by a mere earthquake?? (a Kathryn comment) (Kathryn commenting here...) I have to admit that I don't have any idea what made me think about it, but the whole time we were at Disneyland I kept wondering what would happen if there should be an earthquake while we were there -- Sure creates a whole new feeling about riding 'Big Thunder Mountain Railroad' or one of the other rides that sort-of push the edge of sanity. Somehow I feel grateful to the Powers-that-Be for NOT deciding to shake everyone up during a time when the amusement parks were open, or during a rush hour when more people were on the freeways. If it had to happen, at least it happened at a time that helped limit the number of casualties. I STILL have nightmares about the big one that hit SF -- the news service shots of the stacked bridges and highways that fell and crushed all those people, and the buildings in the older parts of town that just collapsed. While we were driving around in SF it was obvious just how much recovery is STILL going on. I sure hope LA manages to dig out quickly -- and to think about all those people (Us included) who thought the Ventura Freeway was a pain to drive around on... I can only guess at the horrors of commuting NOW. Take care yourselves -- we'll be keeping positive thoughts about stable, unshaking ground -- even if I DO keep hearing Elvis singing 'All Shook Up' when I see the news reports... Mike and Kathryn (PS to John -- Be sure to give Muki and Sam a good rub from all of us. I really sympathize with Muki and her flight into a small mostly quiet space -- I have vivid childhood memories of the really bad earthquakes I experienced while our family was stationed in Japan -- I always wanted to find a quiet, dark place to hide too! -KMS-) ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 82 Wed Jan 19, 1994 M.RIVMAN1 [MATT] at 22:05 EST Tomas - " Boy howdy " !!!! The best way is to put Warp 9 as close to the beginning as possible; there are very few programs that need to be run before Warp 9, and Warp 9 itself doesn't care about loading order (although some other programs might). Using both Warp 9 and PinHead is not really recommended, but it shouldn't cause any problems as long as you turn Warp 9's fastload feature off. If the fastload feature is active in both programs, you might have trouble. The best thing to do would be to reorder your AUTO folder so that Warp 9 loads early in the sequence; if you have something in there that needs to load before Warp 9, we'd like to know about it! - Charles @ CodeHead Tech ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 90 Sat Jan 22, 1994 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 14:42 EST What does Mouse Matz do? Still, even with MKM's default feature, I would recommend Mouse Matz because of its small size, low memory consumption, no ACC tied up, and the ability to replace all seven mouse pointers. If you have this problem with MKM, then you'll almost certainly have it in an "animation-aware" version of Mouse Matz too, because there's only one way to achieve animated mouse cursors. It turned out to be Warp 9's #4 mouse acceleration setting. That's right, #1, #2 and #3 cause no problems, but #4 causes the pointer to drift to the right. I tried it with nothing but STE fixes, Warp 9 and MKM installed. And I've never edited any of my acceleration settings. MouseKa animates the mouse by faking a one pixel move of the mouse (and then moving it back). This move is amplified if your mouse acceleration setting for a one pixel move is greater than one. You can still maintain a #4 setting if you can live with a 1 in the first setting. Personally, I can't stand to use anything but a 1 there because it means you can't move the mouse by one pixel no matter how slow you move it. The "flickering cursor" in Atari Works to which I referred happened when you used the earlier version of Mouse-Ka- Mania with an animated mouse shape. Since Atari Works is constantly setting the mouse shape, the older version of MKM flickers between the arrow and the animated shape. It's very distracting, and the new MKM fixes this problem completely. I think the flickering that you guys would like to see fixed is the flickering that happens as you type text in Atari Works; the whole line of text flickers as you add characters to the end. Unfortunately, this is an Atari Works problem (the code is written inefficiently) and nobody can fix it except Pradip. Since he's indicated in a recent message that he's working on the code (during his free time, maybe?) anyone who'd like to see this problem addressed should make their wishes known to Pradip soon. - Charles @ CodeHead Tech ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 145 Sun Jan 30, 1994 J.HUGHES23 [Jack ] at 01:12 EST >may release it again as shareware. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 187 Sat Feb 19, 1994 T.DUNBAR2 [Tommy] at 13:58 EST Tomas - The Beatles broke up?! What are you talking about? :-> . Don't mean to outrage all of you but I heard Dylan went electric. Uh, I mean, uh Warp 9..... ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 188 Sat Feb 19, 1994 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 14:25 EST John, is Leonard6 some type of 'exception vector' handler? Hmm... How does it do the remote reboot? --Kevin ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 189 Sat Feb 19, 1994 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 15:45 EST John, What you need is a few more computers.... Grin. Ron Re: reseting computer via phone call. Sure, all it takes is a hardware device to sense the ring on another line, and toggle power. Would reset the whole mess. Of course, that requires another line, and could be annoying when those 'demon dialers' get going. Grin. But I have heard of some BBS operators using such devices. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 190 Sat Feb 19, 1994 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 16:37 EST John, Yep, can reset that puppy via the phone. You have to make a minor modification to the reset switch though. We used a Fax switch, tied a relay to the Fax line coming out of the switch and the other end of the relay to the reset switch on the computer. When we entered the code to select the Fax line via touch tone phone, it toggled the relay which reset the computer via the reset switch. Worked like a charm. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 191 Sat Feb 19, 1994 D.GEPPERT [MR.DON] at 17:29 EST Thomas.......what do you mean.... "You know about Santa. right" ?? Is there something I don't know ???? John.....I new a guy once who always reset his BBS by phone, he just called up his girlfriend and asked her do do it. She used to hate the drive though...... ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 192 Sat Feb 19, 1994 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 18:09 EST Wayne, re: fax switch, that's very ingenious. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 193 Sat Feb 19, 1994 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 18:17 EST Wayne, So... what is your FAX #. ... I also thought it was a neat idea. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 195 Sat Feb 19, 1994 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 21:19 EST Tomas, You can't shatter my life - I know there is a Santa! (Always wanted to be a Beatle, I did!) Hmmm, wonder if the remaining 3 will actually do that studio gig I keep hearing about? And of course, the burning question.... will Sean step in to do Johns' parts? Matt (asking that musical question... Can a girl from Buffalo find happiness with a guy from _normal_ parents!) ;-) ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 197 Sun Feb 20, 1994 D.FARRINGTO1 [David <>< .] at 00:09 EST John: That's what I was talking about a while back, when you first started telling me about your reboot problems. We've been using that type of reboot on our 8 bit machines for several years now. Works great. We use a multi-port fax switch so we can share lines with voice traffic. We use old 300 or 1200 baud modem as the ring detector and use the off hook led to drive a relay and the relay to reset the computer. This gives a nice 30 reset. We use it for cold boot because we want to clear the memory of trash but should work fine on warm boot also. Anyway, got any old modems and a fax switch. Like Wayne said it's easy if you have the time. :) ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 198 Sun Feb 20, 1994 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 05:22 EST All you have to do is tie the output from the Fax line (ring) on the Fax switch to the relay. No need for another modem, another phone line or anything. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 199 Sun Feb 20, 1994 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 10:15 EST Mr. Don, I don't think John should use your system, it might shorten his life. >> Joe M << ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ more.... Kevin, I believe Lenard6 intercepts bombs and delivers an English messages rather then bombs. All it would have to do is do a re-boot based on specific error reports or just reboot at any crash. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 200 Sun Feb 20, 1994 DAEDWARDS [Warrl] at 13:30 EST Off topic: The word I consistently hear is that while three musicians named Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George might get together, there will *never* be a Beatles reunion. That all three of them are very firm on this, and that John Lennon formerly was equally firm but hasn't been contacted lately. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 201 Sun Feb 20, 1994 MUSE [Tomas] at 16:37 EST Warrl, It's George Harrison.
