Give the CodeHeads your ideas. 205 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 3 Thu Jul 08, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 03:39 EDT CodeHead: Even thought most CodeHead software seems to run fine on the Falcon, I've encountered a couple of problems worth mentioning: 1) CodeKeys works fine, except that the "hot" keys for starting a timed or untimed macro recording cause bombs and a "lock-up." Attempting to add a pause when editing (both shifts plus control and alternate) have an indentical effect. 2) PopIt works, except that the Falcon doesn't recognize the assigned "hot" keys, which essentially cripples the purpose of the program. I've eliminated all other TSR programs from the AUTO folder and also disabled all ACCs to check for software incompatability. No luck!! Just thought I'd post these findings FYI. No problems as yet with HotWire, MaxiFile, or MultiDesk. Mark @ VISION Music ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 4 Thu Jul 08, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 04:57 EDT Mark, Thanks for the report. We'll check it all out. A rigorous testing of all CodeHead and LGF products is underway right now and your timing is perfect. Any information Falcon users can provide on your experiences with CodeHead software and the Falcon030 will be greatly appreciated. There are certain things to remember when reporting compatibility problems. The most important information is whether the problem exists when the software is run on a bare system. Bare has only one meaning in this case: boot from a floppy with only the program you want to test. That's where the buck stops. Add things one at a time and report what you find out. Add to that a description of your system and your normal setup and you've got a proper bug, er... symtom report. Have all of you folks received our mailing? ===Tomas=== July 08, 1993 @ 1:44:37 am PDT ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 5 Thu Jul 08, 1993 OUTRIDER [Terry] at 10:30 EDT Tomas, Shouldn't you also report whether the incompatibilities exist in the ST- compatibility modes in addition to the Falcon-specific modes? I recently received your mailing and was wondering since I have sent my Warp 9 registration in can I just fill out the yellow order sheet to upgrade or do I have to send in the disk? ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 8 Thu Jul 08, 1993 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 19:49 EDT Tomas, No mailings rec'd here yet and I'm looking everyday, expecting AV so my eye is peeled.(my good one) Frank ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 9 Fri Jul 09, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 01:55 EDT MCH, Thank you for the report. I have just finished testing CodeKeys and PopIt extensively on the Falcon. I can find no problem with PopIt. It's completely Falcon compatible as far as I can tell. I was about to tell you the same about CodeKeys until I tried it in "true color" mode. It seems to crash in this mode when you try to record a macro (although there's no problem with playing back existing macros). Are you using "true color" as your normal mode of operation? As for your problems with PopIt, here are some other things to remember about using it (on any system): REGACC.PRG must be in your AUTO folder. POPIT.ACC must be in the root of C (not in MultiDesk). You need to either copy your POPIT.CFG file to the new location or define new hotkeys before PopIt will pop up any ACCs. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 10 Fri Jul 09, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 02:03 EDT Terry, Yes indeed, a full bug report would include that conditions under which the symptoms occur. Resolution, memory, CPU speed, monitor(s) used, internal modifications, dongles attached, external hardware, TOS version, software versions... all that stuff! We should probably come up with an ASCII bug report template. Ken and Frank, The Avant Vectors still have not arrived. I'm looking for a big shipment in the next two weeks from Trade It. The mailing was done with a bulk mailer and this will result in sporadic deliveries. Be on the lookout for it. It includes details on giveaways of over $5000.00 worth of CodeHead products. Everybody wins something! Dave Glish, Sorry, you must send in your disk to receive the upgrade. Not sending the disk will delay your order, but you'll still be entered in the giveaways. Only Calligrapher 2 to 3 upgrades are currently processed without a disk exchange. ===Tomas=== July 08, 1993 @ 10:56:23 pm PDT ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 11 Fri Jul 09, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 02:28 EDT Tomas, I too received the mailing, and am quite impressed. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 19 Sat Jul 10, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 00:48 EDT John, I took your and others' suggestions and tested CodeKeys and PopIt on a "bare" system, booted from floppy. They both worked flawlessly! My problem, as you surmised, was resolution-related. I was running in 256-color mode, which not only caused the previous problems but some other strange ones as well. In 16- color or other modes, no problem! Thanks, Mark @ VISION Music P.S. Would love to see WarpNine for my Falcon! See Flat, All you have to do is mail or FAX it back. No purchase necessary. We're craaaaaaazy. Ken, I'll ask John to remind me not to forget to remember to enter your name in the drawing. I started processing entries on the 30th of June. If your name isn't pulled from the CodeHead (we have a hollow ceramic ceremonial CodeHead thingy) then your name stays in the drawing. John will anounce the winners as soon as he recovers from the $5000.00 figure in my last message. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 22 Sat Jul 10, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 07:28 EDT When we were preparing the mailing, we were faced with a decision. We wanted to have a giveaway as an incentive for people to order some of the things they've been putting off purchasing. But the post office takes anywhere from 2-7 weeks to deliver a bulk mailing. We wanted to be fair to those who might not receive the mailing as early as others, but still give an advantage to those who respond soon. So we decided to have five weekly drawings, starting the 1st of July. We had the first drawing and John Markarian is the lucky winner of a Calligrapher Gold. As the time for the second drawing rolled around, I realized that most folks on GEnie still hadn't started talking about the mailing. So we've pushed the other four drawings back a week. It looks like this was good timing because most of them seem to be getting out this week. This means that most people still have a chance to get into the second drawing. Your name stays in the hat (the CodeHead) until the drawings are over or you win something, so the earlier you respond, the more chance you'll have. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 23 Sat Jul 10, 1993 D.D.MARTIN [Swampy] at 08:56 EDT Nice mailing, CodeHeads! Very professional and high quality. We have friends all over the globe and one in outer space on a Starship or something. Those addresses are a little harder to handle in a "bulk" mailing. Fear not however, those that hear about this offer via modem can call the office and we'll fill out the order form and enter you in the giveaway. How's that? Have a credit card handy and figure a little extra shipping to locations outside the US of A. If you did get the mailing, make a copy for your users group and pass it around. Duplicate entries will be fed to the paper folding machine and recycled as kitty litter. Having the folders in one window with a folder's files in another is nice. I wish LGS had that. I'd also like the "PATHS" visible at the same time in LGS along with a more flexible FIND option. As it is you have to hook into Maxifile. And while Maxifile's SEARCH feature is the best I've seen on the ST it's about a step behind SUPERBOMERANG on the Mac where you can search a file with fields than can be LIKE, CONTAINS, BEGINS WITH along with keyword searches for file contents. LGS is good for what it does and the amount of memory it uses. I've actually nothing bad to say about it. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 66 Fri Jul 16, 1993 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 18:42 EDT John E, Doug sure writes some nice stuff. I use Opus (registered :-) on a daily basis. I have now started using Lookit. It amazes me how fast text can scroll. I have no idea anymore what is making everything faster. Warp 9 must have something to do with it. :-) Kenne, It's not that I think Lookit's file selector is not great. It is that LGS is already all set up and I love just hitting a function key to instantly go where I want too. Thanks all. John B. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 67 Fri Jul 16, 1993 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 21:04 EDT Yeah, that's what I figured, Be Flat Sharp. File selectors just haven't quite made it yet. SuperBomerang is close, though. I don't think it can be managed on an ST. I can picture a cross between LOOKIT's selector and LGS with the addition of radio buttons that can be assigned paths. Add the ability to load and save the path info along with hooks into another program that loads setups for each application (ala CODEKEYS) and it would be really sweet. Then all that you would need are hooks into DA's like Maxifile and a real trick File/Text Finder ACC. But I'm dreaming. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 68 Fri Jul 16, 1993 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 21:06 EDT Ooh! And there could be two default radio buttons. But keep in mind that some of the older (original?) STe's have the 28 pin chips in them and you need to remove them and add the 32 pin sockets before you can put the TOS 2.06 chips in. I don't remember that TOS1.0 was this slow. How soon we forget maybe? Question. I own quite a few Codehead program (just noticed that my name was drawn in your Contest!!!!! Yeah!!!) and use them exclusively! The club Im in (Cin'tari) always has a booth at Mist each year, the past two years we would make X amount PD disks to sell at the show. The problem was that we would never make enough disks of the ones that were popular, and we would always go home with tons of disks we couldn't sell. We also had problems with quality of duplication since the members that did the disks in the past used a Blitz cable. Well this year I did things differently! I decided to only make 12 different PD disks for the show. I used CodeCopy to load them and save them in CCP form to my hard drive. I then created a Hotwire menu that had the 12 disks listed. You would put a blank formatted disk into the drive, click on the Hotwire entry for the disk the customer wanted and Hotwire would tell Codecopy to load the disk image write the disk, verify it, and then exit back to Hotwire. All with one mouse click! This had HUGE benefits for the club, first we were able to sell more disks than we ever had before (and I only made 12 different PD Disks for the show! Previously we made 30-50), secondly the problem with not having enough of one disk was resolved because we would create the disk on the fly when the user asked for it. And finally our quality problem was resolved since Codecopy did a verification on the disk! The only thing that would have been better is another system set up to run the Hotwire/Codecopy combo (My system was the only one making disks, the others were doing demos). I think our club will have to order Codehead Utilities and Hotwire before the next show so we can be even more effective! Thanks for the great software Codeheads! I always seem to find more uses for your software every day! Mike ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 126 Sun Aug 01, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 18:28 EDT See Flat, With TOS 1.02, you'll want Fatspeed to help out on disk speed, and either PinHead or Warp 9 to fastload your programs. Mike Hill, That's exactly how we have our URW fonts setup, both in the office and at shows. We have a couple of menus which allow us to make any of the URW font disks in about 20 seconds (to pre-formatted disks). I'm glad you can also make use of the same setup. Another thing you might consider is to set up CodeRam entries in your HotWire menu. Using a command line and the same set of CCP files you already have, you can create and load a RAM disk image of your master disks in about 2 seconds, all by clicking once or pressing a key. It's a very quick way to get at any individual file on your master disks. I wish I would have thought of that before the show! Every once in awhile I needed to refer to a file on one of the disks. You mentioned that you write your URW fonts in about 20 seconds to a formatted disk. Are these disks close to full? It seemed like my disks took longer to write (they were preformatted). Is there a way to turn off the verify option? Possibly some trick I missed in the manual? Course next time I do this at a show I might trying changing the setup so the CCP files are archived and have the hotwire entry uncompact the CCP file (with ZIP or LZH) and then have it fire CodeCopy. That way I can fit more CCP files on the hard drive. We keep several separate databases. The only way to get in the registration database is to mail in a reg card. If something happens in the process what can I say? Updating (by sending in a disk) wouldn't necessarily correct an error in the reg. files. I had thought that the databases were combined for the mailout, maybe not. I spoke to a buddy that I _know_ is in the database and he hasn't gotten it either. We tried to reach everyone who has ever purchased a CodeHead product. So anyway, we'll be happy to correct any errors in our records. Gerry, You're right. Photocopying is a bad idea. Now that I think of it, it doesn't even prove ownership. Perhaps it's an outdated address. Mike Hill, The reason our URW fonts only take about 20 seconds or less with CodeCopy is that they're small. They don't even fill a single sided disk. We preformat the disks with Interleave 11 and they fly quite quickly through the write and verify stages. If you're filling double-sided disks, the best speed you can get is by preformatting the disks with MaxiFile's "skew" option (or an equally fast formatter). Even so, it might take a minute or two to write & verify a full disk. We use a Blitz cable at the office. It's the fastest way to make disks, but since it doesn't verify, we still use CodeCopy on another machine just to verify. I wish I could get the code for the Blitz software. I'd add it to CodeCopy to verify the disk in the same operation. See Flat, I don't know anything about FastCache. I know Fatspeed works and I trust it implicitly. Al, TurboDOS is a known problem causing program. I wouldn't recommend it. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 137 Mon Aug 02, 1993 M.HILL13 [Mike] at 22:16 EDT John, Yes our disks were double sided and quite full. I had a Syncromesh and another member had a blitz and the club had nothing but trouble with em. Just copying with Fcopy and no verify was more reliable than the blitz syncromesh. Id bet Codecopy with no verify would be just as reliable. But I couldn't see how to tell Codecopy to do just a write with no verify. There is nothing but TROUBLE to be gained by making copies tht might be in error. Why do you think they DO write verify by default? Floppies are prone to write errors, which are usually correctable by an immediate retry, but you won't KNOW if you don't do write verify. Sure, it takes extra time to do this, but does the saved time justify a bad copy? I just remember that after reading the post, I concluded that >it simply made the Atari more powerful and I, of course, couldn't have >anything less than the best. I think its like this: GENEVA is a replacement for the AES and "time-slices" the CPU. MTOS is an OS using the existing AES and is "pre-emptive" or true multitasking. The "slowness" of MTOS is that it is still using an older AES. MTOS is based on Erik's original MiNT multitasking kernal. Adding MiNT to GENEVA's new AES will give a increased speed of the AES time-slicing on top of the pre-emptive multitasking capability. . . . . .or so I heard. Ron - ABUG ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 183 Mon Aug 30, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 06:54 EDT Terry, HotWire works fine with Geneva. Since HotWire itself doesn't yet support multitasking, anything run under HotWire won't multitask. But you can switch back to Geneva and run something else via Geneva's own launcher at any time. I'm not a HotWire user, but the beta group has wrung this one out pretty well, and HotWire works fine as a single-tasker under G. Ken, Dan Wilga is working on MultiTOS compatibility for Geneva. The only reason to be interested in running MTOS under G is the use of MTOS's 68030-specific protected mode, in which apps make use of that chip's more advanced design, and MTOS's preremptive multitasking. Geneva's mutltasking is cooperative. I have no idea yet if G will speed up MTOS. If it doesn't ... yech. Wayne, But why would you run MiNT udner Geneva? Geneva handles the multitasking itself. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 184 Mon Aug 30, 1993 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 08:03 EDT I was told by Gribnif that in order to multitask TOS programs, you need to run MiNT under Geneva since it doesn't MT TOS programs. Being on the road with Jarreau for 2 months kind of threw off my Macintosh programming schedule, but I'm forging ahead again. (Actually, I'm splitting my time between Mac development and the Warp 9 Falcon/SpeedoGDOS upgrade, which means updating all the existing EOS modules to run on the Falcon too.) A program like MaxiFile doesn't translate directly to the Mac environment; almost every aspect will have to be totally redesigned, so there's plenty of work to do. Gotta say I'm pretty excited about the future of the Apple line, especially the PowerPC-based Macs that will start appearing next year. Can't wait to upgrade this here Centris 650 to a PowerPC machine! (Not that I'm waiting much with the Centris as is... ) - Charles @ CodeHead Tech P.S. Gee, so I come back after two months, and what's happening with the Falcon? Where are all those new dealers? Where are the ad campaigns for the Falcon? Where's the _real_ Falcon -- you know, the faster, 040-based two- piece model? Where's the SCSI2->DMA converter, so people with Atari laser printers and Atari hard drives can use them with their new Atari computer? Where are all those new developers? I wonder how many Falcons have been sold in North America this year? P.P.S. Not the answers most of us wanted to hear. Sam has been quoted as saying that 80% of Atari's business will be game machines. Seems like the remaining Atari resources are being directed towards the Jaguar. The rationale is that it will create positive cash flow, some of which can be applied to the computer line up. My thought is that some positive cash flow could have been generated with proper handling of the Falcon. BTW, I have yet to see a Falcon serial number over 1000 (ignoring the initial digit and all the following zeros) reported in NA. Getting back on topic (hi, Brian), I still would like to see a language sensitive editor (like LSE on VAXs under VMS), but suspect that the sales probably would not justify the development costs. Another thing would be a general purpose CD-ROM driver. From what I can tell, the ones that are available don't handle all the various formats. I'd just like to see a CD icon on my desktop that I could double-click on and then open the CD appropriately. I think there is a market for such a thing. I've seen lots of BB traffic on the subject. SCSI CD-ROM drives are dropping in price and increasing in capability. Who knows, maybe Atari has a PowerPC Falcon (or Eagle?) in the works. Seems like a neat chip, although I still prefer to work with CISC rather than RISC. Just as long as it isn't some Intel kludge. Glad to see you back.
