John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 35 Fri Apr 02, 1993 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 21:02 EST John or Charles, Back in October of 1987 the was a program (demo) on the Compute!'s Atari ST Disk called 'LINES.PRG' which would make (I beleive) a good Extend-O-Save module. This program was various lines of all different colors swinging all over the screen. The user could change to three different modes through the use of keys, (maybe configured in Warp 9) an 'H' for a horizontal mirror and a 'V' for a vertical mirror. You could use both at the same time (which if preferred). On the disk is a copy of the machine code source file as well as a basic source file. I have the original disk and I have used it on my old tin cladded TT in ST low resolution (very quick). I don't know who the Author was but it was a good demo but the only way to quit was to reboot. Some where I do beleive that I still have the magazine to go along with the disk. I would make you a gift of the magizine and disk (instead of sending you a 'pirated' (gawd I hate that word)) if you thought it would help with a new exteno module. What do 'ya think? Since this is the 'day & age' of GUI's with fancy buttons, etc., why not use some of that brilliant brain-power you folks have to create an error-free, intuitive GUI 'front-end' for Aladdin -- (which is NOT an intuitive 'front- end' for Genie)? All one has to do is read the messages in the Aladdin RT to conclude that almost every new user, (even some regular users!), are BAFFLED when it comes to Marking Topics. To me, the 'command-line syntax' required by Aladdin is utterly vague. I'll bet I could upload my MS-DOS CONFIG.SYS file as a reply to one of those messages and it would fit right in! REA DAT >930404 NOR QWK-JUMPTO TOP 25-35 C:\INPUT.TXT Kinda rediculous isn't it, when clicking on a button or two should be able to send the appropriate data to Genie? Maybe you could also tell the Aladdin folks how to let the users ADD or IGNORE a topic _WITHOUT_ having Aladdin go through the entire list of topics each time any single change is made!!! Can't Aladdin just 'flag' the individual modified Topics & let the mainframe do the work? You don't have to reply to this reply. Neither do you have to suggest that I take this topic up over in the Aladdin RT -- I've already asked for some feedback on this subject, but it's like trying to get Atari to give a straight answer. I think I may have hurt someone's feelings. That was never my intent...all I want is to get away from acronyms and command-line syntax. It's been working all week, but in trying it just now I find that none of the lines are answering. Thank you for reporting this. Since we installed an uninterruptable power supply about 6 months ago, the BBS has been operating very reliably. It's located in a restaurant, and we had a lot of problems due to people flipping the power off and on for whatever reasons. If you're logging on at 2400 baud, you shouldn't have any trouble unless the first two lines are busy and you get bounced to line three. For some reason, this will give you a bunch of gibberish. The only solution is to wait a few minutes and try again. If you're using a high-speed modem, you _must_ set your baud rate to 9600, nothing higher, and call line #2 if you have HST, or line #3 if you have v.32. Line #1: (213) 461-2095 Line #2: (213) 461-2096 Line #3: (213) 461-2097 I'll try to find out what's wrong today, but I'm not sure why you'd have had problems "for a few weeks". John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 89 Wed Apr 21, 1993 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 20:38 EDT Wayne Watson, MNP-5 is a compression standard whereas MNP 1-4 are error correction standards. An MNP-5 connection would result in speed losses on transfers of files that are already compressed. Since they are already compressed little or no gain in compression is realized and in some instances they even get larger. That plus the time to attempt the compression means you end up going slower. That goes for here, or anywhere else. As far as I know GEnie doesn't offer MNP-5, sorry if it was my message which misled you on that. [Wayne] at 19:32 EDT Just any FYI here John, but a mega works great using a PC style power supply. My Mega's power supply blew up a couple years ago shortly after a power surge incident that required major repairs on the Mega. Within a month or so the power supply went flaky and then blew up.(literally). At the time I had my HD's in a clone desktop case powered by a clone power supply. I salvaged the motherboard connectors off the Mega power supply and made up a set of power wires with the Atari connectors on one end and clone style power connectors on the other. Plugged it in, and my Mega has been humming along just fine ever since. Shortly after that I moved everything to a tower and it's now running off the tower power supply along with the HD's, floppies, Icd Host, etc. ------- Wayne, Sorry about that, I didn't make myself very clear on the MNP-5 point in my original message. My comment wasn't intended to "rub it in" or make others feel badly about not having a Falcon while I do have one. It was intended solely to encourage the 'Heads to debut their Falcon-compatible version of Warp 9. My Falcon has literally spent more time with others than with me since I acquired it. It has visited two user groups in Wisconsin and three in Illinois. It participated in a multi-platform show in the winter (IEEE). It has also been in the hands of other developers who wanted to make their own products Falcon- compatible. Even a young friend in the 8th grade spent a week exploring its potential. It's home now, probably for good, since the for-sale models are near shipping, and I'd like to make better use of it by taking advantage of CodeHead's Falcon- compatible offerings. I notice that you've complained about the delay of the Falcon in Cat 18, too. I can understand how this would be a concern to folks who are waiting in line to purchase their own, and I sympathize. That is, even in the Atari configurations, it puts an $E9 in the first byte of the boot sector (believe it or not, that's all you need to do to a disk to allow most DOS machines to read it). MaxiFile's MS-DOS formatting options change other things that some clones require for successful disk access, such as 3-sector FATs, 2-to-1 interleave, etc. I suppose it's possible that older versions of MS-DOS might require disk labels, but I've never run across this on any of the machines I've used. I having to decide each session which to use; MTOS or Hotwire, MDD, W9, CKs, and Maxifile. Guess which one usually wins? Yep, Codeheads. Unless I am doing b/u. ~~~~Brian ... Written on Sunday 04 July 1993 at 12:11 p.m. ADT ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 190 Thu Jul 08, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 03:39 EDT CodeHead: Even thought most CodeHead software seems to run fine on the Falcon, I've encountered a couple of problems worth mentioning: 1) CodeKeys works fine, except that the "hot" keys for starting a timed or untimed macro recording cause bombs and a "lock-up." Attempting to add a pause when editing (both shifts plus control and alternate) have an indentical effect. 2) PopIt works, except that the Falcon doesn't recognize the assigned "hot" keys, which essentially cripples the purpose of the program. I've eliminated all other TSR programs from the AUTO folder and also disabled all ACCs to check for software incompatability. No luck!! Just thought I'd post these findings FYI. No problems as yet with HotWire, MaxiFile, or MultiDesk. Mark @ VISION Music ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 191 Thu Jul 08, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 04:57 EDT Mark, Thanks for the report. We'll check it all out. A rigorous testing of all CodeHead and LGF products is underway right now and your timing is perfect. Any information Falcon users can provide on your experiences with CodeHead software and the Falcon030 will be greatly appreciated. There are certain things to remember when reporting compatibility problems. The most important information is whether the problem exists when the software is run on a bare system. Bare has only one meaning in this case: boot from a floppy with only the program you want to test. That's where the buck stops. Add things one at a time and report what you find out. Add to that a description of your system and your normal setup and you've got a proper bug, er... symtom report. Have all of you folks received our mailing? ===Tomas=== July 08, 1993 @ 1:44:37 am PDT ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 192 Thu Jul 08, 1993 OUTRIDER [Terry] at 10:30 EDT Tomas, Shouldn't you also report whether the incompatibilities exist in the ST- compatibility modes in addition to the Falcon-specific modes? Yes, I received the mailing. Very nicely done! __ /erry .\\ay ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 193 Thu Jul 08, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 11:26 EDT Tomas, Nope, no mailing here. Awaiting recently ordered AV while John was in KC. Besides, you know where I live now. Ken S. ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 194 Thu Jul 08, 1993 D.GLISH [DAVE GLISH] at 19:43 EDT I have a question. I recently received your mailing and was wondering since I have sent my Warp 9 registration in can I just fill out the yellow order sheet to upgrade or do I have to send in the disk? ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 195 Thu Jul 08, 1993 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 19:49 EDT Tomas, No mailings rec'd here yet and I'm looking everyday, expecting AV so my eye is peeled.(my good one) Frank ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 196 Fri Jul 09, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 01:55 EDT MCH, Thank you for the report. I have just finished testing CodeKeys and PopIt extensively on the Falcon. I can find no problem with PopIt. It's completely Falcon compatible as far as I can tell. I was about to tell you the same about CodeKeys until I tried it in "true color" mode. It seems to crash in this mode when you try to record a macro (although there's no problem with playing back existing macros). Are you using "true color" as your normal mode of operation? As for your problems with PopIt, here are some other things to remember about using it (on any system): REGACC.PRG must be in your AUTO folder. POPIT.ACC must be in the root of C (not in MultiDesk). You need to either copy your POPIT.CFG file to the new location or define new hotkeys before PopIt will pop up any ACCs. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 197 Fri Jul 09, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 02:03 EDT Terry, Yes indeed, a full bug report would include that conditions under which the symptoms occur. Resolution, memory, CPU speed, monitor(s) used, internal modifications, dongles attached, external hardware, TOS version, software versions... all that stuff! We should probably come up with an ASCII bug report template. Ken and Frank, The Avant Vectors still have not arrived. I'm looking for a big shipment in the next two weeks from Trade It. The mailing was done with a bulk mailer and this will result in sporadic deliveries. Be on the lookout for it. It includes details on giveaways of over $5000.00 worth of CodeHead products. Everybody wins something! Dave Glish, Sorry, you must send in your disk to receive the upgrade. Not sending the disk will delay your order, but you'll still be entered in the giveaways. Only Calligrapher 2 to 3 upgrades are currently processed without a disk exchange. ===Tomas=== July 08, 1993 @ 10:56:23 pm PDT ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 198 Fri Jul 09, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 02:28 EDT Tomas, I too received the mailing, and am quite impressed. It's rare these days to see such quality advertising for ST products, and in a strange way makes me feel a little more secure about the state of Atari developers. The prices are pretty impressive too! - Mick ------------ Category 32, Topic 11 Message 199 Fri Jul 09, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 06:23 EDT Dave Glish, Please send us your disk. We need it for our inventory system. As we've said many times, you don't need to buy any special mailer or even pad the disk. Just throw it in a regular envelope with a sheet of paper wrapped around it. Will we be eligible to win a prize? I don't remember when I made the purchase at CAF 93 if Tomas mentioned a drawing. I love to win stuff :-) ------------
