Johnson (yours truly!). If you have problems with or questions about ARC Shell, here's the place... 201 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 1 Sat Dec 07, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 23:58 EST Hiya folks! I'm just about to upload ARC Shell 3.0 to the library. It will be available as soon as the sysops clear it. New features: o Vastly improved interface for Thomas Quester's LHARC programs, allowing access to many of their special features. o A "Group Extract" function that lets you automatically extract all ARC/LZH files in a directory to their own individual folders. o An improved "Install Application" dialog box. o Greater configurability. o And of course, the obligatory LOTS MORE. Have fun with the new version; please note that if you've already paid the shareware fee for ARC Shell, I'm asking a small upgrade fee for this latest version. I think this is very fair, since I've been continually upgrading and enhancing ARC Shell for years without ever charging an upgrade fee. Thanks to all the folks who've paid the shareware fee for ARC Shell -- you're the ones who've made it possible for me to continue improving the program for all this time. But payments have slowed down drastically recently, and if you'd like to see me continue to support and develop ARC Shell, an upgrade payment will do wonders toward that goal! Thanks, and have fun with the new version. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 3 Sun Dec 08, 1991 OUTRIDER [Terry @ T2] at 23:38 EST Charles, The new ARC Shell looks real good. However, I cannot get the new "Group Extract" function to work properly. It seems ARC Shell wants to try and extract _every_ file in my directory, regardless of extender (or no extender at all). I tried *.ARC for a filename, but still no go. Maybe it's because I'm using MaxiCall? Also, I was pretty excited when I read about the new "Install Application" box. I assumed I would be able to save all settings so that I would never have to see it again, i.e., double-click on an archive, have ARC Shell put it into a folder and then exit, all without further intervention on my part. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to save the settings, which leaves me wondering what the purpose is for setting all the options prior to the extraction. Doesn't seem to be any easier than the old method. If anything, it seems slightly more intrusive. All in all, a fine upgrade, though. Thanks! - Terry - ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 4 Mon Dec 09, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 11:13 EST Terry, As the docs say, the "Selection" line of the file selector is ignored in the Group Extract function. If you want to extract all files with an .ARC extension, you should make sure your _directory_ line ends with *.ARC. It sounds like you've changed the default directory file mask from *.ARC to *.*. The settings of the Install Application box _are_ saved when you save your ARC Shell configuration; but as you point out, if you set it to exit, there's no way to save that setting. A small oversight. :) - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 5 Mon Dec 09, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 19:25 EST Hi everyone. As is usually the case, I test a new version of ARC Shell as thoroughly as I can (yeah, right!)... release it, and bang, the bugs start coming out of the woodwork. I discovered today that some things aren't working exactly right, like the automatic deletion of LZH files after extraction. Sorry...I've already found and fixed all the bugs, and added a couple of further enhancements to the "Install Application" box while I was at it. (You can now set the destination for extracted files, and save the options.) There will be a version 3.1 soon, folks. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 6 Mon Dec 09, 1991 D.WEIMAN [Don Weiman] at 21:32 EST How can I, without resorting to the ALT key every time I want to do something, get Arcshell ver 3.0 to: 1) Make the date be the same as the latest file I have added to the .LZH file instead of using today's date? (The "t" switch) 2) Automatically create the sub-directories (sub-folders) when extracting and when I want to use the "Group Extract" button so that I don't have to sit there and push the Y key (J in the german version, 201i) every time a sub-folder needs to be created? (The "m" switch) I tried an earlier version of Arcshell which didn't work so well so I gave up on it and have just been using LHARC.TTP which works great. I just thought, after reading Charles F. Johnson's messages about ver. 3.0 that I'd give it another try. Any help is appreciated. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 7 Mon Dec 09, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 23:07 EST Don, Both of those features will be in ARC Shell 3.1, which I'll upload in the next day or two. Thanks for the suggestions. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 8 Tue Dec 10, 1991 M.CHANDLER [Matt] at 00:12 EST Jeez, Arcshell 3.0 is just Great! So -easy- to configure. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 9 Tue Dec 10, 1991 OUTRIDER [Terry @ T2] at 09:47 EST Okay, Charles, I guess the guilty culprit is MaxiCall, since it doesn't allow you to edit the path file mask. Guess I'll have to bypass MaxiFile as my file selector when I want to Group Extract. Thanks for the info, and looking forward to 3.1... - Terry - ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 10 Thu Dec 12, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 21:20 EST ARC Shell 3.1 is almost ready to upload! I actually ended up adding several important new features to this version, including the ability to use ARC 6.02 and LHARC's "indirect" file features, when you extract files "W/ Query" or when you add/move/update/etc. files using MaxiFile. This means that these functions don't have to call ARC or LHARC repeatedly any more -- they can simply call the program once and add all the files you specify ... including files on more than one drive, and in more than one directory. This is a nice timesaver. I also added support for almost every other feature of the Quester LHARC programs to ARC Shell 3.1; the only one left out now is the "Generate Compatible Headers" switch, which will be of very little interest to most ST/TT users. The "Install Application" box has been considerably enhanced too. And all bugs reported and discovered over the past week (and there have been many) have been exterminated. Watch for ARC Shell 3.1 soon at your local neighborhood info service. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 11 Thu Dec 12, 1991 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 23:59 EST Wow! Charles, if you keep adding features, you will need to raise the asking price! No, wait--- I didn't say that..... ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 12 Fri Dec 13, 1991 MUSE [Tomas] at 03:27 EST Gee Whiz, Charles. I just got 3.0 running last evening! A person gets a lot of practice just configuring your programs. :-) And already an update. I wouldn't get anywhere near as much out of being online without Arc Shell. Thanks. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 13 Fri Dec 13, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 15:42 EST To all, I just discovered something troubling about both ARC 6.02 and the Quester LHARC programs. If you pass them the name of a file that is NOT an ARC/LZH file, both programs will print an error message on screen (usually something about a "bad header") but they DON'T return an error to a calling program -- which means that ARC Shell has no way of detecting this error. This means that you should be _careful_ when using the "Delete After Extraction" option of ARC Shell's Group Extract function, because if one of the files that ARC Shell finds is not an ARC/LZH file, it will be deleted after returning from ARC 6.02 or LHARC if you have that option selected. There's no way for ARC Shell to detect this, because the programs don't return errors to ARC Shell's Pexec() call. Arrgh. In fact, I'm thinking of removing the "Delete After Extract" operation now, for this reason. Opinions? Remember that you specify the "mask" for files to extract on the "Directory" line of the destination file selector; if you want to extract all ARC files, for example, your directory line should end with *.ARC. The file selector's "Selection" line is _ignored_ when you use ARC Shell's Group Extract function. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 14 Fri Dec 13, 1991 W.LORING1 [BL.A.ST] at 23:34 EST Charles, It wouldn't bother me if you took out the 'delete after extract' button. I don't use it anyway. I'm much too cautious (read: anal) for that. ...bill (whose upgrade check will be in the mail on Monday) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 15 Sat Dec 14, 1991 M.JONES52 [Jonesy] at 00:16 EST Charles, I could live easily without the "delete after extraction" - especially since it'd make things safer. It's more laborious, sure, but I prefer to do my own deleting manually. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 16 Sat Dec 14, 1991 D.WEIMAN [Don Weiman] at 00:36 EST Charles, In Arcshell version 3.1, the "No Warnings" option: ( m: Beanworte alle Fragen mit ja) still doesn't work with "Group Extract." It works fine with a regular "Extract." ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 17 Sat Dec 14, 1991 ST-REPORT [Lloyd Pulley] at 00:49 EST Charles, I can swing either way on the "delete after extraction"....just don't take out the Batch mode!! ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 18 Sat Dec 14, 1991 MUSE [Tomas] at 05:44 EST Charles, I use the delete option all the time. I copy all my new downloads to my ARCHIVES collection (I'm up disk #068) and then I can delete as I un-ARC/LZH. Of course, I haven't used the "group" features yet. BTW, I hadn't been able to delete LZH files with the Quester program in Arc Shell prior to v3.0. I'm getting the 3.1 version tonight. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 19 Sat Dec 14, 1991 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 08:27 EST Charles, Please don't remove the delete after option. However you might remove the option to make it the default choice. At least that way it would force a little more care. Another option would be to call MaxiFile to allow the user to delete, but I think that would be the same potential problem. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 20 Sat Dec 14, 1991 MIKE.KELLER [ST Aladdin] at 12:28 EST Joe: I think that's what Charles meant. No "automatic deleting." You would still be asked if you wanted to delete or keep the file. After all, you _were_ watching the screen and saw the unarc fail, right? %%%%%%%%mike%%%%%%%% ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 21 Sat Dec 14, 1991 M.CHANDLER [Matt] at 15:27 EST 3.1 is even better than the last version! I especially like the big "Quester LZH Mode" button" and assoiciated LZH options. This is the first time ever that I've configured Arc Shell's default to "LZH" mode, when running it. I'll bet ARC files will be a thing of the past pretty soon. LZH is just too fast, and compresses too small compared to ARC. You might want to re-name the program "Lzh Shell" :*) My check's in the mail, and I hope everyone elses is too, as it only gets better and better. Matt p.s. Everything's fine except for that grammatical error on the "cOnvert" button. (Just kidding...:*) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 22 Sun Dec 15, 1991 F.BELL1 [Frank @ Home] at 11:01 EST Charles, Generally I doen't use 'Delete After'. But there are times when its very usefull. Please DO NOT remove 'Delete After' and insert a warning in your documentation instead - it might even get read. I also have a small wish: would it be possible in the next version to put the '"Extract" 'List' and 'Exit'' roll of buttons at the bottem of the dialog box where they're supposed to be? Frank... P.S. I love 'Indirection', a beautiful feature. Read the Docs guys. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 23 Sun Dec 15, 1991 R.NORTON6 [BOB NORTON] at 19:24 EST Are you planning on implementing the "c" switch of Questor's LZH in the future? I need the ability to create afx archives. Bob ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 24 Tue Dec 17, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 02:38 EST Wow. I just checked the download count for ARC Shell 3.1 --and there have been well over 600 downloads in just four days! That's great! What's not so great: the number of names in my shareware database is not even close to that amount... and that's for ALL my shareware programs, not just ARC Shell. There sure are an awful lot of you folks out there using ARC Shell without paying for it; and I'll bet that a lot of you use the program almost every day. How about it, guys? It's Christmas -- a great time to pay the ARC Shell shareware fee, and get that off your conscience. I've gotta tell you -- if shareware payments don't start picking up, version 3.1 will very likely be the LAST version of ARC Shell. I simply do not have the time to devote any more energy to this program, if the majority of the people who use it won't bother to pay the very reasonable $15.00 fee. If you'd like to see further support of ARC Shell, you have to do your part too. - Charles P.S. Thanks very much to those of you who _have_ done the honorable thing and paid the shareware fee. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 25 Tue Dec 17, 1991 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 08:21 EST Charles, I DL'ed ARC Shell 3.1 a few days ago but haven't read any of the DOC's. I assume $15 is the suggested "upgrade" fee for folks who have previously paid up (for an earlier version)? If so, then there are probably some folks who could easily be justified in sending in a larger amount (to cover the last year or 2 ... or 3). -- Harry :-) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 26 Tue Dec 17, 1991 ST-REPORT [Lloyd Pulley] at 09:38 EST Charles, Wow!! What a guilt trip!! I am sending in my update fee, I am just waiting for the guy to send me my check for the STacy that I sold. Lloyd E. Pulley, Sr. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 27 Tue Dec 17, 1991 F.HENSE [FRANK] at 22:35 EST Charles, Remove the delete after extract, I've always been too timid to use automatic delete actions from within programs/shells. And Thanks for your continuing shareware efforts to bring SANITY into the compression world. Frank ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 28 Tue Dec 17, 1991 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 22:47 EST Charles, I'm one of those who downloaded Arc Shell 3.1 and haven't sent in my fee yet. :-( I AM however one of those who did pay the shareware fee for the earlier Arc Shell. :-) I'll get the shareware upgrade fee out to you soon. I've just moved and haven't found my desk and checkbook yet. :-) Wayne ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 29 Wed Dec 18, 1991 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 06:26 EST I agree with removing delete after extract. First, because I save my archives for upload to the user group BBS, and for archiving to floppy. And second, because I don't like the idea of losing any data if something goes wrong. It is quite simple to click on the file(s), and then on the trash icon (ugh) in MaxiFile. Wayne, Well, at least you found the important things, the computer and modem. But how is computer operation on the floor? Grin. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 30 Wed Dec 18, 1991 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 18:09 EST Charles, I am sure a lot of people will be sending in the Shareware fee. Just give the a little time. Times are rough at the moment with some of us being given days off at work and not paid for it (I.E. EXTRA holidays but without the pay) and Christmas coming up. Look for my check in the mail soon. As soon as I can see sky again. Thanks for a great Shell. I just downloaded it last night and got it setup. To the Codeheads and their families, I wish you a Happy Holiday Season and may the New Year be Prosperous. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 32 Wed Dec 18, 1991 WAYNED. One for the Computer, and the other is a *normal* desk with all my paperwork, checkbook, etc. I guess you could say I'm AMBI-DESK-EROUS. :) Couldn't resist that one! Wayne ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 33 Wed Dec 18, 1991 MIKE.KELLER [ST Aladdin] at 23:29 EST Charles: If we send in shareware fees for more than one item, can we just write one check and list the various registrations on separate paper? %%%%%%%%mike%%%%%%%% ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 35 Thu Dec 19, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 00:17 EST Mike, Sure, you can just write one check and list the programs you're paying for on a separate piece of paper. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 36 Thu Dec 19, 1991 N.WEINRESS [IAAD Member] at 00:18 EST Charles, my check was handed to your erstwhile partner. Grin. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 41 Thu Dec 19, 1991 OUTRIDER [Terry @ T2] at 21:25 EST Interesting that people are asking (if not telling) Charles to remove the "Delete after Extract" function because THEY don't use it. As long as it's an OPTION, who cares? If you don't like it, DON'T USE IT, but don't solicit its removal. Sheesh. - Terry - ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 42 Thu Dec 19, 1991 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 22:01 EST Um, Terry...It was Charles who identified a problem with Delete After Extract and Charles who then polled the users on their sentiments regarding retaining the option in spite of this problem. The folks who are offering their opinions here are thus doing what Charles has asked (if not told) them to do. Sheesh. ;-) ------------ John, There was never any doubt in my mind as to which desk would get set up first. :-) Wayne (Made a PUN, now in his room having Computer FUN) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 44 Thu Dec 19, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 22:37 EST I've figured out a way to detect if an error has occurred during a Group Extract operation, so it won't be necessary to remove the 'Delete After Group Extract' option. Let's see....another update? Hmmm. How about if I agree to do another update if I get five shareware payments in the next week? (That would be more than I've received in the past two months...) I wasn't kidding about shareware payments slowing down _drastically_, folks. Even when things were at their peak, it was nothing to write home about (who can afford a stamp?). But lately, it's been simply pathetic; almost not worth renewing my PO Box. Is everybody selling their STs or something? - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 47 Fri Dec 20, 1991 R.NOAK at 04:23 EST Charles, Do you accept shareware payments via credit card or gift-of-time? That might help with the payment flow. If you accept the cards, etc., I'll do it right away, if not, you'll have to wait for the mail. ;-) (hey, I sent the LGS payment, I _mean_ it!). Randy @ Southlake, Inc. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 48 Fri Dec 20, 1991 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 06:47 EST No, Charles, it's Christmas and most of us are BROKE, as in out of MONEY. Hang on a couple of weeks... ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 49 Fri Dec 20, 1991 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 21:12 EST Oh, no! I was ready to plow through my stack of upgrade notices and take care of them all (ArcShell, MultiDesk Deluxe, Scanlite, Copyist, dBMAN, EdHak, Diamond Back, etc, etc) when I noticed that I hadn't paid my car payment this month!!! Yech! I wondered why things seemed so good! :-{ -- Harry (It'll be there soon, though!) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 50 Fri Dec 20, 1991 C.F.JOHNSON [CodeHead] at 21:13 EST Randy, Yes, I can accept a credit card number (in Email, please!) for shareware payments. We'll put it through the CodeHead account. Gift-of-Time is a good idea, but since I already have a free flag here on GEnie (so I can do support for CodeHead without going broke), I'm afraid Gift- of-Time isn't something I can use. - Charles ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 51 Fri Dec 20, 1991 C.GEEROMS at 22:26 EST Ok, Charles, put that gun down.....don't do it.....and back away from the window slowly....a check is now winging its way to you $15 for arcshell though I contributed that amount a while ago...it's definitely worth it. How about public humiliation of non-payers....in the docs, simply list all the shareware contribu- tors "without whom this program would not have been possible." And just leave off the names of contributors who don't want to be identified (for whatever reason.)..That way we can SEE how many are or are NOT contributing!! Codehead software means Supported Software!! Believe it folks....there's none better! So _then_ I'll be registering ArcShell 3.1... Do you accept Visa/MC? ;-) I still wish it had a Zoo button, so I could Zoo from ArcShell, too... Any particular reason why it doesn't change the title in LGS anymore? And I'm gonna register LGS, and PinHead, too, believe it or not... Oh, and DeskManager! (And Bill Aycock's Cal... Anna ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 60 Sun Dec 22, 1991 C.NICHOLLS [BILL] at 01:16 EST Charles, If I'd known you would accept a shareware payment by credit card, you'd have had my upgrade contribution a while back. My problem is that as a Canadian, I can no longer write a cheque on my Canadian bank in US funds without exorbitant bank charges at both ends. When I'm very busy, as I am now, I tend not to go to the bank and line up to buy a US$ money order. I wish more people would accept shareware payments by credit card. My payment will be in the E Mail tonight. Bill ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 61 Sun Dec 22, 1991 C.HERBORTH [Morpheus] at 12:59 EST Oooh, oooh! I think I might have found a bug in either ArcShell or (another one in) Questor's LZH program... I was packing up a bunch of humourous text files from the internet to upload to a local BBS, and I was using the exceptionally handy indirection with MaxiFile... Here's my setup (sorta): LZH files being written to j:\whatever.lzh First batch of text files from j:\info.net\humour\{a few files}.txt Second batch of text files from j:\info.net\quotes\{a few files}.txt When packing the stuff in the \humour\ dir, everything was nice and fine, and the LZH.TXT file was being written there. When I went to add the quotes, the LZH.TXT files was _still_ being written in \humour\, and LZH couldn't find it, so it said "No files matched." and flipped back to ArcShell. Yah, a minor bug (the only kind CodeHead seems to let out the door! Yahoo!) but still... ;-) It doesn't seem to make a difference if I turn on the "Delete Ind." button or not. In fact, I exited ArcShell, and ran it again, and it was still writing the LZH.TXT file to j:\info.net\humour instead of to j:\info.net\quotes... That's the weirdest part... -Chris- ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 62 Mon Dec 23, 1991 B.NYSTROM [Bry @ Ahh] at 01:30 EST Charles, Not that I should speak up about shareware payments (but since I hardly ever use my ST anymore)...I think that a plea for payments for Desk Manager would be in order now, also. (working from a non-fuji based machine) ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 63 Thu Jan 02, 1992 A.CASSINO [Andy] at 00:12 EST Hi, I've noticed a problem when creating an archive with ArcShell 3.1, MaxiFile III, and Quester's LHARC 2.01G. The situation is that I have 3 text files to archive, sizes approximately 69K, 177K, and 138K. Case A. Using GULAM, with an environmental variable "TMP=H:" (which is my 590K CodeRam ramdisk), the command "lharc a foo.lzh foo01 foo02 foo03" yields a new archive of size of 161070 bytes. Compression is 41-42%. Case B. Using ArcShell with the temporary directory set to H:, and with Quester LZH mode set (LH1 and LARC options are off), selecting "foo01", "foo02" and "foo03" with MaxiFile to be archived into "foo.lzh" yields a new archive of size 200600 bytes, even though compression is still shown as 41- 42%. Case C. As in Case B, except archiving foo01, foo02, foo03 to an archive named "test.lzh", the archive size is 161070 bytes! In all cases, files extract with no problem. I have not been able to create a command line scenario that results in the larger archive size. Quester's path handling strikes again? Andy Cassino ps. I am preparing to send my ArcShell Upgrade fee (as soon as I figure out if I've sent one for LGS or not). ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 64 Fri Jan 03, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 20:48 EST I have been using Arcshell 3.1 for 2 weeks and its works perfectly when extracting Quester LHARC files. Quester lzh programs use a different command sequence so if you aren't using their command mode they can't find the files. I had the same problem when first using the new quester LZH programs. Make sure the quester mode is selected. Fred ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 68 Sun Jan 05, 1992 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 16:36 EST Eureka! Thanks, Fred! And thanks to Mike for asking. I finally D/L'd it last year when ARCs with folders became common, and the LZ5 or whatever files began making UNLZH burp. Now I use it all the time, and yes, I have registered folks. Folks, not paying for shareware that you find truly useful is not just dishonest, it's STUPID. (Now, I'll bet this is an ARC quirk rather than ARCShell, but I'll do it anyhow.) You know how when you verbose list, you have to press a key after the initial display and then it displays a whole bunch of info you didn't need anyway and then it lets you press a key OR press a mouse button? How come it doesn't give you the choice both times? How come only a key the first time. My hand is on the mouse in ARCShell, not the keyboard. By the way, the version I am using is, if I recall correctly, 2.6. Thanks for any info. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 77 Tue Jan 21, 1992 JEFF.W [ST Sysop] at 10:42 EST Bob Z - I think the documentation that came with v3.1 notes that the "Left- Double-Click" has been replaced by "Right-Single-Click". Just click once with the right mouse button on those boxes to get the same thing as you used to get with a double click of the left mouse button. I like the new arrangement much better than the old one. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 78 Tue Jan 21, 1992 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 14:39 EST Bob Z, You can _single_ right-click on any of the options (or use a Control-keypress) to invoke them. To me, this is easier and handier than double-clicking, but some people may not think so. Depending on your opinion, you may still find this useful feature too annoying to justify paying your re-registration fee. Dorothy, That extra screen of info in the verbose list is provided by ARC 6.02. If you don't like it (as I don't), simply use your alternate ARC utility (I use ARC 5.12) for the Verbose option. You have taken a proven program and made it better. It has been awhile since I used ARC Shell because I was using DC Xtract. However, after my first encounters with LHZ (LH5) compression, DC Xtract didn't cut the mustard. So I was ripe for a utility that would get the job done. After bumping into a few brick walls, I started using your new and improved ARC Shell. Not only could I handle LH5 files with ease but your 'Group Unarc' was a feature I was dying for. I agree with the recent posting from Ralph asking for adding support for ZIP files. (Zoo suppport would be Cool too). Thanks for the lastest upgrade to ARC Shell. I will be sending an additional shareware donation this week. THX N3. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 97 Tue Feb 25, 1992 J.ZORZIN [Joe] at 06:45 EST In the continuing saga of LZH decompression utilities- I once again have had a problem!!!! I'm no dummy- I've been using and programming ST computers for 6 years and I still can't figure out this stupid LZH stuff and I'm getting ticked off about about. I just DL'd FGRAPH_D.LZH. According to WHATISIT.PRG, it is a LH5 type. I tried: (1)using LHARC.TTP by itself [no luck] (2)using LHARC.TTP with the arc shell -with and without the infamous Questor button [no luck] (3)using MINILZH.TTP with much better luck but the doc file came out scramled. What gives with this LZH stuff? I have more damm hasstles with this than anything else in 6 years of intense use of ST's. First of all anyone uploading a file should give detailed instructions on exactly how to decompress. Second, I'm ticked that I still haven't come across the complete English instructions for the stuff in the LZH201I folder. Someone did a translation of part of the manual which still doesn't explain what the other files are!!!!!! This is no way to run a library or an online service. In the past if I mention a problem with LZH people always suggest, "Use the Questor button". Well I'm getting tired of this bull. I suggest that either this LZH stuff gets simplified or we just stop using it. If I'm having trouble with it I'm sure that people new to computers are going to have an impossible time with. In contrast, I never had a problem with good old arc files. I suggest that someone do a complete translation of the LZH201I manual once and for all. I thank you in advance for the headaches I won't have anymore. And I suggest that it become a public policey that all uploads contain detailed instructions on how to decompress the file. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 98 Tue Feb 25, 1992 F.KOCH [Fred H. Koch] at 08:36 EST Joe, Since you seem to have LZH201I (actual file !LHARC.TTP) all you should need do is use it with a good ARC shell like EDM Shell or Charles Johnson's ARC Shell with the questor button selected and it will unLZH all files regardless of if they are LH1 or LH5. I haven't found an LZH file it won't unLZH yet and I check most of the files uploaded to GEnie, as well as other sources. I know it can be frustrating when progress changes things we are comfortable with, but change is inevitable. Without it we could all still be using quill pens or worse, I had a boss who refused to use anything but pencil and paper for writing since computers were "too confusing" to him. If it is only one file you are having problems with, it might be the file, although the ST RT sysops check all files before releasing them, so someone got it to unLZH correctly. Fred ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 99 Tue Feb 25, 1992 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 16:17 EST Joe, I'm not sure why you're flaming in the Arc Shell topic. Charles has done everything he can to ease the use of all types of ARC and LZH utilities. There's no way that Arc Shell could be easier to use than it currently is and still be compatible with all of the formats. The doc file tells you how to deal with the various formats. As Fred mentioned, LZH201I handles most, if not all, LZH files just fine, as long as ArcShell's Quester button is selected. There's no other way for ArcShell to handle this. I can understand your frustration, but I think your wrath is misdirected. There is nothing I know of wrong with the LZH program (LZH201i). If you are having trouble with it, most likely you have a bad download. IF you downloaded it with xmodem, you could get a bad download. If you are one of those trusting souls who run with write verify off on his disk drive, you could have a bad write to the drive causing trouble, OR, you could have had an interrupted zmodem download, leaving the file incomplete. Try downloading it again before you get a nervous breakdown. Ron ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 103 Sat Feb 29, 1992 J.ZORZIN [Joe] at 04:49 EST Ron: You're right I should calm down. Heck I can't help it, I'm Itallian. Its in my DNA. And if I had 4 arms I'd be typing with 2 of them and waving the other 2 around with rapid hand movements. Later- I just DL'd FGRAPH_D.LZH again. Then I tackled it with again with LHARC.TTP by itself, then LHARC.TTP with arc shell with and without the quester button, then the MINILZH.TTP, then LZSHLARC.TTP, then UNLZH271.PRG. And all I ever get is 3 bombs. I use ZMODEM, have a new Supramodem, and never a problem with my telecom. stuff except with LZH. If someone can actually decompress FGRPH_D without getting a nervous breakdown please EMAIL ***exact*** details and save me the cost of a valium prescription. Thanks. Later still- I DL'd ESH222.LZH. No luck with LHARC.TTP with or without the arc shell but MINILZH.TTP did the trick! So the lesson is that I must have a large suite of lzh programs with their German docs and try them all with each new download. That sounds intelligent- highly efficient. I also DL'd several arc files and decompressed them with **no** problems. But of course this is highly inefficient. Shame on me. Later still- I used the EDM shell (in ESH222.LZH) to almost successfully decompress FGRAPH_LZH. The EDM shell started to choke on the bad doc file but recovered. I think I have it all then. So either I simply not using the arc shell correctly or it can't recover from defective files. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 104 Sat Feb 29, 1992 ST-REPORT [Lloyd Pulley] at 10:51 EST Joe Zorzin, I just decompressed FGRAPHD2.LZH and had no problems. Pulley, Sr. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 105 Sat Feb 29, 1992 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:18 EST Joe, I think you mentioned in a previous message that you do have LZH201I. Also, many people have mentioned that this is the latest LZH utility and will handle the compression used in virtually every LZH file. It only requires that you click on the Quester Mode button in ArcShell. Please try using LZH201I.TTP. I personally have not found any LZH files that it would not extract (I don't even have an "Alternate" LZH utility installed), but I'm sure others spend a lot more time with LZH file than I do and may have found some obscure ones. Our CodeHead Demo/Shareware disk contains ArcShell and LZH201I.TTP and all of the other files are compressed in this format. Here's the step-by-step procedure that I list in the README file for extracting them. I hope it helps: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Run ARCSHELL.PRG. 2. Click on LZH, Config, and Locate Default Archive Program. 3. Locate LZH201I.TTP. 4. Click on Quester LZH Mode. 5. Click on Config, Save, Save, and Exit. 6. Click on eXtract. 7. Click on Go!. 8. Locate the LZH file you want to decompress. 9. Choose a location to put the extracted files (with plenty of disk space). Leave the Selection line blank and click OK. 10. Click on To Folder and the files will be decompressed to a folder with the name of the LZH file. 11. Repeat steps 7 through 10 until you are finished. If you have problems (and even if you don't), read the ArcShell documentation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Maybe this will help you determine the missing link or the step you've been skipping in trying to decompress your files. Good luck! John ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 106 Sat Feb 29, 1992 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 14:47 EST Joe, LZH201 will recover from MOST bad files, however, some may be damaged beyond the program's abilities. Again, I have NEVER had a bad download with zmodem, and never had ANY problem uncompressing LZH files with LZH201i and ARCSHELL or EDMshell. There ARE a couple of things that cause people trouble, such as not enough ram and not enough disk space. The program doesn't always handle these problems correctly (I think TOS/GEM is the problem there). ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 107 Sun Mar 01, 1992 J.RICE5 [Joe Rice] at 00:17 EST Joe, If MINILZH.TTP works when LHARC.TTP doesn't, I wonder if there's any chance that your LHARC.TTP might be corrupted somehow. I get this while extracting any LZH file on drive "P", (my ram disk). Haven't tried to compress a file yet... Don't do much compressing. The file I am extracting I also put on the ram disk. So it's a plain "P to P", manoeuver...And I/m pretty sure I have 3.1 all configured properly.. I try the extract and click on the "Folder" button, and then the "DEVIL" takes over..... I have UIS III 3.32 & ArcShell 3.1 is located on Drive "C" of my the hard drive in an "ARC program folder. The funny thing is today, I did some ARC. decompressions and they were fine. The trouble lies with LZH somewhere! Here is what I got today using 3.1. Arc602.TTP un-arced fine... LZH both version i & k. Failure.. Gem screens: #1 ERROR: Unable to run Archive .PRG Please check your configuration! #2 Drive (Blank): is not responding please etc. And the drive space is blank, no drive letter shows. I think the simple solution would be for me to create a "HotTouch folder on my ram disk every time I want to LZH??? Could it be that one of my Questor LZH's is screwed up & every time I use it to un-LZH the next it transfers some info to the new version?? Well now I am grabbing at straws.. John E, & Ron. I've checked & double checked the configuration set up, it was probably the 1st thing I did a month ago...... 2-day I uncompressed the latest version of Questor's LZH, this one is "k" I believe, then reconfigured 3.1 to use the fresh unLZH'd version on drive "P" the ram disk, still got the same da** thing... I take it this means you may not completely understand everything in the Configuration Box. The path that I suspect is the "WORK DIRECTORY". It's the third box from the top. It doesn't matter how many times you relocated or reassign different LZH and ARC utilities...if the path listed as your "WORK DIRECTORY" does not exist, you may have problems. Click on "Set Directory" and change it to a path that exists. If you still can't get it functioning correctly, start with a fresh copy of ArcShell (download it again if you have to). Copy it to a floppy disk and copy ARC602.TTP and LZH201K.TTP to the floppy disk also and run ArcShell from that disk. Try to unLZH some files and you should have no problem. Once you've determined that it _is_ possible to have success running ArcShell, you can begin correctly installing it on your hard drive. Success is right around the corner...I can smell it. One good technique when trying to troubleshoot problems that occur with ArcShell when the LZH/ARC program works OK by itself, is to examine the command line that ArcShell creates (its shown on the screen when the program is called). If the command line does not match what the documentation says the program needs, you have a good clue. In this case, it would be the requirement of an extra space for Quester's LZH. Well, Jason, the terminology (jargon) is always what's so confusing about computing, is it not? You probably drag and drop all the time. Take an easy example: how do you copy a file on the ST? You: 1) Position the mouse pointer over the file icon to be copied 2) Press and hold the left mouse button -- a ghost of the icon appears 3) Move this ghost to wherever you want it to (e.g. another window) 4) Let go of the left button. The file is then copied. Steps 1-3 are collectively referred to as a "drag" and step 4 is the "drop." So, in computer-ese, you "drag" the file to be copied to its destination, and "drop" it there. In the case being referred to here, they weren't talking about copying a file. They were talking about "feeding" a file to an application. So in that case you "drag" a document to the icon for your word processor (for example) and "drop" it there. The word processor (if properly written) then starts up, and immediately loads the document you "dropped" on it, thereby saving a step. To do this on an ST would be the equivalent of doing the following on a D*S machine: C:\> wp document.wp Where "wp" is the word processor (where you dropped it) and "document.wp" is the document to be processed (the "drag" file). Hopefully this answers your question. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance. - T.J. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 193 Thu Mar 04, 1993 T.EVANS21 [] at 06:45 EST >Message 191 Wed Mar 03, 1993 >OUTRIDER [Terry] at 21:44 EST > > >(Wondering what people see in desktops...) >---------- Terry, I think they see all the pretty colors, and your Moivng Pic's program.. :) <-:}Ted{:-> Thursday, March 4, 1993 - 6:41:52 am ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 194 Thu Mar 04, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:52 EST Jason, Secrets of NeoDesk has a nice little section on drag-and-drop, and it's not just specific to NeoDesk, of course. Actually, I doubleclick on files that I want to de-arc in MaxiFile and that runs ArcShell. But I appreciate the new perspective. - Jason Saffer Hercules, California Thursday, March 4, 1993 12:11 am ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 196 Mon Mar 08, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 00:47 EST I had read that ArcShell has trouble on the Falcon (MTOS). If this is the case, I hope it is updated to be F030 friendly. I don't know how I would get by without this gem! Lou ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 197 Mon Mar 08, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 04:20 EST Lou, I think you heard wrong. Someone else sent us E-Mail asking when we were going to "fix" ArcShell to work under MultiTOS. When we tested it, we couldn't find a problem so we asked the person what problems he was having. He never got back to us. If someone has "trouble" with ArcShell with MultiTOS, I certainly hope they'll be kind enough to report it to us (explicitly). You may wish to check out the file to see what was said. Kent ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 199 Mon Mar 08, 1993 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 10:18 EST > I think you heard wrong. Something to do with a GEM program calling a TOS program, or some such.. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 200 Mon Mar 08, 1993 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] at 19:22 EST The OLDER versions of Arcshell were mentioned. That must mean the newer one is OK. ------------ Category 32, Topic 13 Message 201 Mon Mar 08, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 23:46 EST John, Yeah, I heard it from Eric Smith from the Dateline Atari conference with Bob Brodie (3/5/93) that ArcShell did not work well with MTOS or such... I am pleased to no end that I had heard wrong. I have a habbit of supporting all the shareware software that I use, and ArcShell was one of the first, I would hate not to have it on the F030.
