Shrink Print 1.2 By Don Alexander Copyright (c) 1991 Softech Design Program Description: Shrink Print is a desk accessory written in 100% assembly language that allows your Epson compatable printer to utilize it's condensed mode printing feature. This printing mode enables your printer to output wide carriage printouts (136 column) on an 80 column printer, thus eliminating wrap around. C programmers may find this especially usefull when printing source code that has deeply nested control structures and/or long comments. Assembly language programmers will also find this usefull for assembly time listings wich may contain more than 80 columns of information. Using the program: Shrink Print is an accessory which means that it must be placed in the root directory of your default drive. To use shrink print you must access it from the desk accessory menu (the one with the Fuji symbol). When clicked upon, Shrink Print will present you with a GEM dialog that contains three buttons, one of which is hilighted. This is the default selection. By using the mouse pointer to select either the first, second, or third button, you will enable Shrink Print, Disable Shrink Print, or cancel without changing the setting. At this point the GEM dialog will vanish, returning control to the currently running application. From now until the setting is altered, any subsequent printouts will be printed in either condensed or normal width character size. Each access to Shrink Print via the menu will toggle the default button selection. This feature was implemented so that the user may quickly toggle between the two modes, by just pressing return, without having to explicitely select it with the mouse. This will also enable the user to know which mode was previously enabled. Note however, Shrink Print has no way of detecting which mode the printer is in. For instance, if you were to reinitialize the printer, the default printing mode would be re-enabled, likewise if you had toggled the printer's power switch. Shrink Print would be unaware of this change and in effect would not accurately display the previously selected mode. In this case, you would select the desired setting using the mouse pointer.
