Before you discard it as not representative of the real version of G-Print, let me tell you how it's disabled. The G-Print demonstration version works exactly like the commercially available version, with one exception. It prints the words "G-Print DEMO" on every page you print with it. Some of G-Print's advanced features will be difficult to figure out without the manual, but I'll explain some basic ones here to get you started. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Unless you already have GDOS (Atari's Graphics Device Operating System), with an appropriate printer driver, installed in your system, you will not be able to run this demonstration. The fully-functional version of G-Print comes with all necessary GDOS files and an installation program which will set up G-Print for you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- When G-Print first starts up, after displaying the information box (and in this version the "order me" box), it diaplays the "Novice Menu." This menu is intended to get new users up and running with G-Print as quickly as possible. It is then possible to save a default configuration which will not display this box when you're ready to do so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GETTING STARTED ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The six options: Load a document into G-Print: "Press" this button (click the mouse button while the pointer is over this option) to load a file which you plan to print. You may load files from 1st Word, 1st Word Plus, Word Writer ST, and ST Writer* as well as plain ASCII text files. Change the font your document will be printed in: This option allows you to select a GDOS font and size to print your document in. Since G-Print reformats your document based on the size of this font, your lines will always be approximately the same length! Change the spacing of your document for printing: G-Print allows you to set the spacing between lines to anything you desire, but single, one-and-a-half, and double spacing are provided to make things simpler. Change the margins of your document for printing: G-Print allows you to set the left, right, top, and bottom margins to any value you desire. The default settings show the distances in inches, but you can set G-Print to use centimeters if you desire. Print out the document you have loaded into G-Print" This prints your document (surprise). It allows you to choose which pages to print and whether to pause between pages or eject a sheet of paper after printing. Leave the G-Print program: Yes, this gets you out of the G-Print program. Switch to advanced user menus: This option lets you switch to the part of G-Print that uses standard GEM menus. There are many, many more options available here. If you click the "Novice Startup" option so that the checkmark doesn't show and then do a "Save Configuration..." with the file name GPRINT.GPR, G-Print will start up in the "advanced user" mode next time you run it. You can change any other parameters you wish and have G-Print start up with them too if you change them before saving GPRINT.GPR. * ST Writer is in the public domain and is available for download from many on-line services as well as from several public domain software dealers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SAMPLE FILES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Several sample files are provided in the archive with the G-Print demo. To try them out, load in the file, and then use "Load Configuration..." to load the configuration file which starts with the same name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STUFF TO TRY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of G-Print's most unique or useful features are listed below. Try 'em out! Set Document Styles... This option lets you change the way styled text is printed. For example, you can set G-Print to print out all underlined text as outlined. You might also set G-Print to print all light text in the "Extra Font." You can then set the extra font to anything you want to add variety to your document. I use the extra font for things like titles and headings. Orientation... This option lets you print pages in ladscape (sideways) mode as well as in "booklet mode" (referred to as dual page mode). This special mode sets up two pages on each piece of paper and chooses the pages so that when the pieces of paper are folded together, they'll read likle a booklet. Title Page... This is the most complicated option in G-Print. It allows you to designate part of your document as the "title page." You can choose the first page in your word processor as the title page or decide how many lines whould be the title page. Then you can center those lines, print them in a special fonts, put a border around that page, and more. Fast Preview... This G-Print function allows you to see how the lines and pages of your document will break. You can also proofread here. It allows you to move around the page quickly. True Preview... This option lets you see what your document will look like printed. Each time you move around the page, it will be reformatted so it can be slow for large pages. Unless you load the screen fonts (see the File menu), the text may be difficult to read. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPGRADES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrades will be available for $4 to protect your investment. Already, an update to support additional 1st Word Plus features and the new TX2 format is planned. Although G-Print is already FSM GDOS* compatible, as soon as it becomes available, G-Print will be updated to support FSM's new features such as continuous font scaling. * FSM GDOS is Atari's new GDOS which supports outline fonts. It uses the same set of fonts for the screen as well as all supported printers. Many new printer drivers will be supported including color printers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO ORDER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G-Print is available from Authorware (a division of MacDonald Associates Publisher who publish ST Informer magazine) for $25 + $2 P&H.
