Double-Page File Printer II for the SLM804 by Douglas N. Wheeler Copyright 1990, All Rights Reserved INTRODUCTION Double-Page File Printer is a utility which allows SLM804 laser printer owners to print text (ASCII) files such that two "pages" of the file are printed on each sheet of paper. The pages are full 66 line by 80 character pages reduced in size so that two of them can be printed side-by-side on a standard 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper. You also have the option to print on both sides of the page, which allows you to print four pages on one sheet! This had two advantages over standard printing: 1) You will need half (or a quarter) as many sheets of paper to print the same file. This becomes very important with long program listings. 2) Since the Double-Page File Printer puts a larger margin along the "top" edge of the page, it is a simple matter to three- hole-punch the pages and put them into a 3-ring binder even if the page contains full 80 character lines. USING THE DOUBLE-PAGE FILE PRINTER The Double-Page File Printer was designed with simplicity in mind. When you first run the program, you will be presented with a short title and copyright dialog. Once you click on OK (or press RETURN), you will be presented with a File Selector where you can choose which file you'd like printed (if you are unfamiliar with the use of the File Selector, consult your ST owners' manual). You may also select cancel if you decide not to print a file. After selecting the file, you are given your choice of tab spacing; either 2, 5, or 8 characters. You will then be given the choice of printing single-sided or double-sided. Single-sided printouts will print on only the front of each page. Double-sided printouts will print on both sides of the paper. Once you have selected a file, the tab size, and the number of sides you want, your file will be printed. If you have selected double-sided printing, the program will print all of the "front" pages then request that you turn the stack of paper over from left-to-right and reinsert the pages into the paper cartridge, after which it will print the back pages. The Double-Page File Printer will keep track of what pages go where, so they will all remain in order. Also, the pages printed with the double-sided option are laid out so that when the pages are placed in a binder, the text all faces the same direction for easy reading. Once the file is completely printed, the program will present you with the File Selector once again so that you may print other files if so desired. If you don't wish to print more files, just click on Cancel in the File Selector. IMPORTANT NOTES There are two versions of the Double-Page File Printer. The one you use depends upon the device number of your SLM804. If your SLM804 is set to device 5, use DUBLPAG5.PRG, and if your SLM804 is set to device 7, use DUBLPAG7.PRG. If your SLM804 is any other device, you will have to change it to one of these for the Double-Page File Printer to work. If you don't know which device your SLM804 is set to, you can either open your SLMC804 Controller and look (consult your SLM804 owners' manual) or you can just try both programs and see which works. Generally, SLM804s purchased in the past year or so are set to device 5 and SLM804s before that are set to 7. SHAREWARE Like much of today's "free" software, this one isn't really free. You are free to try it out without payment, but if you decide you like it and would like to continue using it, I do request that you send me a small shareware fee ($10 is suggested) to help offset the time I've spent developing this program. Shareware payments also help decide the future of this program. Send any shareware payments to the address below. VERSION II This is version II of the Double-Page File Printer, and adds the ability to print double-sided pages, as well as an information line at the top of each "page" consisting of the filename, date, time, and page number. THE FUTURE I have a few ideas for future versions of the Double-Page File Printer. Whether or not there even IS a future version depends upon shareware payments. I may add the capability to automatically determine the device number of the SLM804. If there is enough interest, I could also have the font file be stand-alone and editable.
