Direct Print - Written by Stuart Coates Version 1.10 - 26 August 1991 Direct Print is a small utility that allows you to print out ASCII text files by saving them to disk with a filename of 'DIRECT.PRT'. This is useful for programs that handle text files but don't have a print option - just save the text as DIRECT.PRT and the file will be printed. Or if you are using a comms program that allows you to capture to disk - why not capture into a file called DIRECT.PRT and keep a hardcopy of your session for future reference. The file DIRECT.PRT will NOT be created on disk. If your printer does not have a built-in buffer then saving a large file may take a long time, Direct Print uses the standard BIOS calls to print so you should be able to use any software printer buffer - plenty are available in the public domain. To print a file from desktop, simply rename the desired file to 'DIRECT.PRT' and then copy it to another drive/folder, the copy will not be made but the file will be printed. To install Direct Print simply place it in the AUTO folder on your boot disk, or double click it from desktop. Due to a bug in TOS, if you run Direct Print from within another program it may crash on exit due to its memory being re-allocated. If you encounter any programs that don't work with Direct Print then I'd be grateful if you'd let me know, and if possible send me a copy of the offending program so that I can fix the problem. About Direct Print: Direct Print is Shareware, which means that you may distribute it freely, but if you find it useful you are expected to send a small registration fee. The registration fee for this product is 10 pounds sterling. Registered users will receive all updates, technical support, and any other programs that I have written. Magazines may publish this program on cover disks only with my permission, and payment of a small fee. The latest version of this program can be obtained from the totally brilliant Arcade Fantasy BBS (0533-376056 8pm-8am 300- 2400 baud) in the Hitchhiker Software section. You can leave E-Mail on this board or on CompuServe (100010,2106) and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. I am currently on the look out for new projects to work on. If anyone has any ideas for a small program then drop me a line and I'll consider writing it, and releasing as Shareware or Public Domain. If you are using a fast modem (2400 +), then I'd recommend that you use a printer buffer so that the printer can keep up...! Will perform a form feed at the end of the print.
