============== TITLE: Iron Bomber III =
    ===============================================================

Iron Bomber III: Alien Defense is finally here. This third installment in
the Iron Bomber game series is the best one yet.

This games puts the user in command of a planetary defense ship. Aliens
have decide to take over your planet, and will stop at nothing to take it
away from you. Your mission is go through all 50 levels of the game to
reach the alien mother ship. Destroy it and you will win the game. Like
Iron Bomber I and II, it is an arcade type on-line game.

Game controls consists of moving your ship left, right, or firing your
gun. There is great variety in the kinds of alien ships that attack your
planet. They all have different shapes, sizes, plans of attack, and
weapons they can use. For example, some ships have the idea that
following you would be the best policy, while others try to avoid action
as much as possible. Besides regular bombs, certain alien ships can also
drop nuclear bombs. When these hit the ground, they send out an
explosion which can even destroy your ship if the bomb did not land
    directly on top of it.

Another weapon at the disposal of one specific type of alien ship is the
tractor beam. Around level ten or so, this ship will first appear. When
this ship activates its tractor beam, your ship will be captured if it
runs into its beam. Once the alien ship captures your ship, you will be
given another one provided you have another life left. If you destroy
the alien ship that has captured one of your lives, the captured ship
will become free and join your other ship. This forms a double shot ship
which greatly increases your hitting accuracy.

The mother ship at level fifty is especially hard. It has all types of
bombs to throw at you and is very difficult to defeat. Hopefully, you
have learned a few things during the earlier levels that can help you
    defeat it.

Unlike Iron Bomber I and II, there are also preset levels instead of just
totally random levels in Iron Bomber III. At first the levels start out
easy, but then get harder on the higher levels. New alien ships are
introduced with deadlier weapons at their disposal. Each level consists
of three waves of alien ships which must be destroyed in order to
progress to the next level of the game. Also, for every five levels that
are completed a password is provided to immediately go to that level.
Since fifty levels is tough to go through in just one sitting, a password
    function was necessary.

Like its predecessors, Iron Bomber III contains separate high score
tables for high speed callers, 2400 baud callers, and 1200 baud callers
to make scoring fair. Since the difficulty of the game varies with each
of the different modem speeds the scores had to be interpreted fairly. A
utility to reset these score tables is also included.

A news file is kept containing the final score and level of everyone who
has recently played the game. The amount of time the user is allowed to
play the game each day is also an option that can be set.

Any questions, comments, or suggestions about the game can be sent to the
Iron Maiden BBS, (717) 333-4564, Isis Node 1/12:21. Iron Bomber III was
created by James (David Rudda Jr.), the Co-SysOp of the Iron Maiden BBS.

    ===============================================================

Well, I told Rich I would write a few lines for the next Express! ST
newsletter and I hate to tell a lie. So here is something that has come
    into my thoughts lately.

There is much-to-do lately about Message Base programs for BBS Express!
ST and not all of the to-do has been conducted in a gentlemanly manner
    about the interested parties.

First of all, I as a SysOp really want to see a good working, dependable
Message Base for BBS Express! ST. I really mean something that would
operate along the lines of Fido or Atari Net but be exclusive to our BBS
program. Of course, I have some specific thoughts about that type of
    Message Base also.

First: I want a message base that allows my Users to communicate in a
number of different interest areas in an intelligent manner. I want them
to be able to quote part or maybe evem all of a message so that
continuity in the message is maintained. I don't want messages thirty
pages long because 7 Users decide to copy everyone elses comments and
then add their own. Shades of CM (Conference Mail) gives me shivers.

Second: I certainly want a dependable means of transmission for the
message base and that could only be accomplished with the use of ISIS at
this point in time without initiating another type of Networking program.
I have found that ISIS is more than dependable and has been working in a
flawless manner on my BBS even when hosting 7 other Nodes when I was a
    Hub.

Third: The Message Bases must have a monitor. The responsibility of the
monitor would be to prevent what I am shivering about as mentioned in the
    item 'First:'.

Forth: In no way, shape or form would I want the Message Base to affect
or require access to my BBS System files in order to operate. I just
would not feel safe knowing the operation of my BBS depended on a Message
Base program operating safely and efficiently and if an error occurred, I
would not be placing operation of the BBS in jeopardy. Simple as that!
Do a job but keep out of my system operating files.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd items above don't seem to be a problem and can be
worked out very easily with the quality of programmers we have both for
BBS Express! ST and the ISIS Network. The fourth item seems to generate
quite a bit of 'Bashing' as I call it due to conflicts between some
programmers and the author/owner of BBS Express! ST. This has definetly
got to be worked out. Being as simple minded as I am I can only see one
way for a Message Base program to work in conjunction with Express! And
that is for coordinated efforts between the author/owner of Express! and
any third party wishing to establish an external program to accomplish
the task of NetWorking an Express! ST type of message base. I honestly
think that a third party developer has no right to ask the author of an
established and efficient progrm to change his or her program to
accomodate the third parties programming. Coordination and professional
courtesy between all parties involved is the only way to fulfill the
desire to have a decent, well mannered Express! networked Message Base.
    Period, it is that simple.

For closing remarks I want to state I see the entire Atari system going
to pot at a steady pace. There are too many existing Atari Systems in
existence to make any real effort to program to accomodate TOS 1.0, TOS
1.4, TOS 1.62 TOS x.xx and now the Falcon series of Atari's. That's not
our fault for choosing Atari but I don't have the $$$ to keep up with
upgrading to each new system Atari comes out with. Especially when the
improvements don't relate very well to previous system versions. Why
doesn't Rich Sanchez make Express! ST compatible with a Falcon? Maybe
because it works so well with all the other ST and STe versions there
isn't a need to reprogram to accomodate the changes for a Falcon. Why
the hell would I buy a Falcon to run a BBS? I might buy a Falcon for
myself and put my older ST/STe online for a BBS but not the other way
around unless my name was Perot or I just won the biggest state lottery.

BBS Express! ST is steadily improving. The memory requirements have been
kept low with good solid programming and thought to folks with existing
systems of 520K or 1 Meg. I would like a network-able message base
within Express! ST but what would the price be in areas of memory and
such. And would all existing owners be able to accomodate the
    requirements.

Yes I like Express! It's a solid BBS program with a good internal script
I can use and understand as a novice and I have many third party programs
running with and alongside it that are extremely dependable. But I want
a Message Base that is networkable with Express! and/or other system
owners so that we can exchange new, exciting and informative types of
messages and information packets. A mini-Fido type of thing. The only
way that is going to be possible is with coordination, coordination and
more coordination. Not bashing, back-stabbing and immature behavior.

So with a couple of folks putting their brain power to work and trying to
establish a networkable message base, I might get my wish sometime in the
future. I just don't want this squabbling to divide the present Express!
base into armed camps. Look what division is doing in what was Yugoslavia
and now in the Soviet areas of Georgia. Wasn't there a quote at one time
that went 'United We Stand - Divided We Fall?'

Let's get our act together guys or the only NetWorking we'll be doing is
changing from ABC to NBC and CBS.

    1. Don Swelgin (Weapon Master) of The KEEP BBS (717-675-4068) Located in
Shavertown, PA has using a CD ROM on his Atari with BBS Express! ST
under a variety of configurations and various results. One configuration
has been with the File Transfer Utility (FTU) by Jay Bray. The other
configuration has been with using the existing Express File SIG's.

    2. Kelvin Atwell (SysOp Kelvin) of Games Inc BBS in California has been
using a CD-ROM with BBS Express! ST. His configuration has been by using
the Express Script language. It does in fact work with Script, at least
during the few times we did some test batch downloads of a few large
    files.

    3. There still seems to be problems with attempting to use a CD ROM on
the Atari. Or at least a lot of confusion and/or mystery.

    ==============  ISIS Network Update                  =
    ======================================================

    1. ISIS is a networking program which works with BBS Express! ST as
well as some of the other BBS programs for the Atari ST (It has been
used with UBBS and Ratsoft BBS). The development BBS for ISIS is
Quantum Thump BBS at 512-795-9175 in Texas. The author is Marc Ferrari,
    his voice number is 512-795-9875.

    2. As of 24 Sep 93, the ISIS network has 68 nodes listed however some of
them may no longer be active.

    1. Jon Odom (Legolas) SysOp of the North Texas Atari Computer Team
(NTACT) BBS in Fort Worth (817-581-8512) has been working on a message
base system for use with ISIS. The program is called CBase and is in
fact functioning with three BBS's networking with a public style message
base system. Jon is connecting to the Next STep BBS and THE KINGDOM BBS,
both also in the Fort Worth area.

    2. This long awaited feature will allow virtually all Atari BBS's to
network in a fairly simple manner.

============== Abort, Abort and Abort =
    ======================================================

    1. During the period 1 Jul 93 to 19 Sep (81 Days) 93 C&R BBS had 981
callers. Of those 981 callers, 64 different callers downloaded 1,458
files. There was also 160 aborted downloads by 24 different users.

    2. The popularity of Zmodem is evident in the following breakdown of
each protocal and number of files downloaded:

1,243 files downloaded with Zmodem Batch in 346 batches
114 files downloaded with Ymodem Batch in 33 batches
62 files downloaded with Zmodem (not batch)
          31 files downloaded with Xmodem
           6 files downloaded with Xmodem-1K
1 file downloaded with Ymodem (not batch)
1 file downloaded with Ymodem-G BATCH

    3. Some users seem to encounter a variety of problems as 24 of them
showed at least 1 aborted download. However 80 percent of the aborted
downloads was confined to 24 users with four of them showing 26, 23, 20
and 19 aborts. Some people are very persitant...

    ==============  In Closing                           =
    ======================================================

It seems like the Atari BBS scene has been slowly dwindling. We have
also been losing BBS Express! ST SysOp's at a slightly greater rate than
    we gain them.

The loss of Express SysOp's generally fall into three categories:
    A. They Move on to another Atari BBS software. B. They Move on to BBS
software on an other platform (primarily the IBM/PC arena), or C. They
suffer from I call BBSBO (BBS Burn Out).

One of our loses was the Real Round Table BBS in Vincentown, New
Jersey. After returning from vacation to his homeland in England Darren
decided not to put the BBS back up. I spoke to him voice and he wishes
to pursue other hobbies which will allow him more outdoor activities. I
will miss King Arthur and the Real Round Table BBS...

Another recent BBS loss was WBBS-FM in Conroe, Texas. George pulled
the plug on WBBS-FM on Saturday, 7 August 1993 after several years of
    operation to seek other adventures...
