A popular way to earn a living from computer software is to sell your
 own software yourself.  You can do this by placing advertisements in the
 popular computer magazines, describing your product, your price and your
 address.  To succeed at this you must sell the right product at the right
 price and advertise at the right place.  Most types of software will sell
 well, but football games and utility programs seem to do the best.

     In order to sell your own software you will have to produce a
 presentable package.  For example, you will need cassette/disk box inlays,
 labels, instructions and cassette or disk duplication.  There are many
 companies that will do these tasks for you, but this can be very costly and
 it will also tie up your cash flow.  If you are just starting off, then it
 is best to produce everthing yourself.  Then when you have more cash flow,
 you can start to use the other companies services.

     When advertising your software products, select a magazine carefully.
 If you are selling a Spectrum computer program then advertise in a Spectrum
 dedicated magazine.  If you are selling an Atari ST computer program then
 advertise in an Atari ST dedicated magazine.  By doing this you will be
 allowing more potential customers to see your advertisment.  Contact
 different magazines to find out who offers the best advertising rates.  The
 bigger the advert the better the response will be.
 As part of your marketing strategy you could also send copies of your
 software to as many computer magazines as possible.  If your product is
 well presented then the magazine will review your software and they do not
 chargefor doing this!  This amounts to FREE good publicity which can prove
 very valuable to small businesses who have just started.

     The main advantage to selling your own software is that you receive ALL
 the profit.  The amount of your profit will depend on certain factors which
 include: How much it costs to produce the software package, how much you
 charge for the software, how much it costs to advertise, how good your
 advertisment is and how many people read your advert.  Once you have 
 considered all the factors then you will find that it is possible to earn a
 few hundred pounds every week.
 When your business is established and you have created a larger cash flow
 you may like to contact software distributors who will distribute your
 software to shops and stores nationwide (List supplied in section 1).
 Although they will only accept a  high quality product and will take a
 percentage of the sales.  You can also publish other programmers software
 and pay them a percentage of the sales.  Start small and work your way up
 to a higher level, otherwise you may go over your head.
