While I myself find this to be a most ex- -cellent program, it unfortunately does have a limitation. The ffollow- -ing information is for those people who DO NOT AS YET have a CD-ROM unit: In Message #163 of this topic, Marlin refers to the fact that: ".....am not suggesting that an ORIGINAL ICD host adaptor works with ExtenDOS." Marlin is more than correct. For the last 2+ weeks, with the aid of some friends of mine, as well as with various set-ups and c config- -urations, we have discovered the following: 1) The program will work according to what Roger has stated in the accompanying manual-----that an ICD >AdSCSI< host adaptor is the preferent host, when connecting thru a DMA port. To further clarify, my friends and I have discovered (!) that only thease specific items work: ICD AdSCSI---ICD AdSCSI PLUS----The Link (I or II)----SUPRA host Note that these are specific for hook-up to the DMA slot. Granted, the Link will work with your ORIGINAL ICD host, but that really defeats the purpose of having this particular host, as you will >DEFINITELY< need one of the afore-mentioned in order to use your CD unit. 2) Roger and I have gone back and forth regarding this in e-mail, and while he has been the pillar of help in trying to get it to work, he has admitted to me prior that the program was checked against that which he had available to test it with (i.e., hosts he had at his place). As such, those of us with ORIGINAL and/or Advantage hosts by ICD are basically left out, save for enpending to upgrade. Roger informs me that this has to do with some kind of "ICD trick".\ As I know not what that is, I am left only knowing that my set-up wi ---will not work, UNLESS I acquire an NEWER host, or else have a Supra. 3) Roger has informed me tonite that he will be commenting on this in the Pro manual. While I myself have asked to see an advance peek of the specifics, I still felt the need to post this info here, in case there are others out there, with ORIGINAL hosts, who are con- -templating CD units. Product notwithstanding, it is better that everyone know this up front, BEFORE they go for it, rather than buy, and end up having to shell out more for something that they already have, but not total. I hopes this helps anyone who needs it. A little bumped, but upgrading anyway...... ***FALCONER*** ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 2 Sat Sep 03, 1994 G.IKEN [George @HACE] at 01:16 CDT Roger What is a SUN COMPATIBLE CD DRIVE? Nice info but I'd simply like to point out that the need to upgrade should be no real matter. Let me make it clear that I am not arguing with your post or trying to be hostile in any way. It is good to point out that if someone has one of the older versions that they be completely aware of the fact they would need to upgrade their equipment in order to operate a CD-Rom drive. This should not however keep them from doing so. In the PC world they have needed to upgrade whole systems, several times. We get so cheep minded we fail to recognize this fact. If you want CD, spend the money, get the upgrade and continue to have fun. Before the Rock Ridge extensions to the ISO- 9660 there were too many limits to use ISO-9660 effectively on UNIX machines. So before that time they would just dump a hard disk to a CD which most use 512 bytes per sector. -- Albert ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 10 Sat Sep 03, 1994 B.WILLIS3 [Bill] at 23:24 EDT Greg, I've got PageStream set up to read the 500 BitStream fonts directly from the CD (a cheap NEC-25 single-speed unit). The process of installing the fonts into PageStream's font manager was glacially slow. But the normal use of the fonts is not much slower than using the fonts on the hard drive. It takes a split second longer to retrieve the data when you first use a font, but there are no noticeable delays after that. Loading the program seems to take no longer than before. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 11 Sun Sep 04, 1994 R.BEATTY3 [Buffalo Bob] at 00:28 PDT Greg, I have literally hundreds of fonts in my PageStream "suitcases" by directing them to the CD. I just wanted to help urge folks to splerge a bit and darn the torpedoes, full steam ahead! There aren't all that many CDs available for the Atari, but it does make certain applications much nicer to deal with. Mostly what we now have is access to photo work, clip art and font libraries. Sounds like mostly DTP stuff to me, a decidedly smaller Atari market. I do wish there was some way to get at some of them other really nice CDs. I've heard about this MOST reader, but I have no intention of dropping $375 on the CD to see if works. Daniel ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 24 Thu Sep 08, 1994 FALCONER [FALCONER] at 00:50 PDT Agreed, Friend VORTEXT..........AGREED!! :) Yes, to expend that amount of funds with no real proofing that it will work right out of the casing would be considered gutsy. Unless of courcourse, you could >RETURN< the CD, or else try it in-house at the dealer's where you can buy it. I am fortunate in that I have a dealer who pretty much tries out everything that he brings into his store (take a >BIG< bow, Steve Kipker, of Steve's Software!! :0 ). This way, I know what I am am spending the BIG $$ on BEFOREHAND. Heck, he even goes so fair as to allow me HANDS-ON with most all that I am interested in, and has yet to ste ---steer me towards something that I would not get much use out of. And I do pride myself on being a >HEAVY DUTY< user of my Atari system(s)!! :) Like I said before, and will maintain continuously.........it seems a shame to have to expend MORE $$ for something that I already have, and have been using for some time, with no problem, only to have to change it out fo --- for a NEWER model. Had I of known this when I started out on this "adventure" into CD-ROM, I would not have been caught short, or else used up -- up so much time to get to the newer host. I look at it like I do my car; I have a 1968 Buick. It runs fine; it's not as good looking as it was when I first bought it, but hey, it does what I want from it---it runs, gives me no real problem, and gets me where i want to be, with little maintanence and --- and attention. The day it finally croaks, then I will go after something --- something else. Until then, why replace what does fine?? Also: if the replreplacement comes with new features, then it is a sign of its time of being manufactured. As time does not stand still, so also will manufactur- - ers not stand on the old. Anything that can make a GOOD product even more appealing, or EVEN MORE better, will always find someone interested (myself included). Thanks for your remarks, all the same!! Good solid feedback is ALWAYS welcome here on GEnie, yes?? :) To Everybody Who Reads This Topic: A question, please: I notice that in Message #189, Greg points out that the NEC-25 can read Corel Photo CD's. I would appreciate it greatly if someone would give me a briefing on what PHOTO CD is, how it works, what it does, by itself AND for us. I have sseen the words KODAK Photo CD several times, and only know that this is a process wherein one can transfer photos to a CD. Disk "Movies on TV and Videocassette" for $30 at MicroCenter and it works pretty well with the current version of the Atari M.O.S.T. driver. You can read reviews of any of the 19,000 or so movies included or cross reference via the 400 or so entries of persons involved in movies. The search feature doesn't work yet, but there's supposed to be an update out in the next two weeks. I think this is a software product we need to support as it is one of the few that allows us to access CD-ROM data via a database front end. There are also available text books on CD-ROM. I've got one called "Desktop Bookshop" that contains about 409 MB of text in both compressed and uncompressed forms. To quote the packaging, "Included are works by Plato, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Aristotle, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, Buddah, Lord Byron, Darwin, Martin Luther King, Kipling, Lincoln, Jack London, Plato (they must really like him), Jules Verne, Voltaire, Thoreau, H.G. Wells, Oscar Wilde, and many more. Hans Christian Andersen fairytales, Aesop's Fables, and Lewis Carroll adventures will delight the entire family. The works of Charles Dickens are here, along with Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Silas Marner, and The King James Bible. A truely amazing collection! Researchers will appreciate the numerous treaties and international agreements, hundreds of legal forms, Supreme Court decisions, dozens of historical documents, dictionaries, census data, complete Internet RFCs, the CIA world factbook, and on and on." Using programs like MasterBrowse you can start reading a book and save a "bookmark" so you can easily pick it up again later. Tintin ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 32 Thu Sep 08, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 23:24 EDT FALCONER, Good question re photoCD! Briefly, photoCD is the following: 1. a special graphics file format which stores a number of versions of the same photo in different resolutions in the same file 2. a CD that is written in XA mode (different at a hardware level from the mode used for standard CD-ROMs), but using the ISO9660 file system format (the _same_ as standard CD-ROMs). These are usually produced by Kodak (or another photo finisher) from the roll of film (or slides) that you give them. Corel CDs of photos use the graphics file format but not the XA hardware mode; photoCDs from your photo finisher use both. Greg Kopchak is really the expert on this; I leave him to make any corrections or additions. Roger Burrows / Anodyne Software ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 33 Thu Sep 08, 1994 R.NELSON48 [Grouch (:{] at 22:06 PDT FALCONER - Photo CD is indeed a medium where you can have your photos placed on a CD ROM. Developing charges are not too bad, about $25 for 2 rolls of film (48 shots). For this price you get one (count them, 1) CD ROM and a bunch of color prints not quite 2cm square as a visual index. One time I got my ROM in a cardboard tacky holder, another time it came in the regular jewl box. The advantage is that the photo info is now digital so you can use it with your computer. With photo show you can make a very nice slide show, even move it over to video tape to send to relatives. Now instead of viewing a second set of prints, they are viewing a TV show with your slides 19, 27, 35 inches diagonal (whatever the size of their TV is) and with a narration by you. This is an excellent way to bring the far away relatives up to date on what is happening in your life. Another advantage is you can make prints from the ROM, so in a way it is an archival storage device. Finally, and here is the good part, you can manipulate this digitized data with paint programs. You can touch up a smile, change the color of a coat or put yourself in a photo with Nixon. The possibilities are endless and limited only to your software and imagination. You and your family could be part of a video game or be a desktop background photo. Anything is possible. My 12 year old likes to use COMPO's studio convert to swap heads around and then print out the photos on the laser printer. She keeps asking me when I am going to upgrade to color! (:{ Grouch. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 34 Fri Sep 09, 1994 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 10:54 EDT Falconer, What Roger said. Also to expand on XA hardware mode. Basically you have several types of tracks on the CD and they have different formats. There is the Yellow Book standard (CD-ROM) and it defines a track type. This includes sub-header, sync and user data, etc. [ sub-header | sync | user data ] <--- track layout] It is based something like the above but not exactly the same. Then comes CD- ROM/XA (Sony/Philips/Microsoft) standard that defines the track somewhat differently from the Yellow book standard. Basically the number of bytes for sub-header, sync and user data is different. The XA standard is basically for compressed Audio (ADPCM), data and video picture data. Then there is the CD-Bridge format. This format is what Kodak's PhotoCD uses and it is built on top of CD-ROM/XA standard. It is modified slightly so it can work on CD-I machines as well. The main difference is the user data is only 2324 bytes compared to 2048 bytes in CD-ROM/XA (mode 2, form 1). The 2324 bytes is for CD-ROM/XA (mode 2, form 2). There is probably more details missing on the EDC (error detection code) and ECC (error correction code) but that is main issue. One can think of XA as an extension to the CD-ROM standard as well. So the now I will draw a diagram of the standards. [ CD-Audio (Red book) ] | [ CD-ROM (Yellow book) ] | (this is the CD-ROM, mode 2 branch) | [ CD-ROM/XA ] | [ CD-Bridge disc ] <= a example is Photo CD Then there is an issue of single-session and multi-session. Is this done through Aladdin...and if so, how? I just experimented and I can make the original message "active" by moving the mouse cursor up there and clicking on it...but nothing else works...ie no click and drag for block manipulation (that's from REPLY mode, where Aladdin opens up a REPLY message window on the bottom of the screen). ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 38 Sat Sep 10, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 04:49 EDT Ah, George, you're in the same boat I was in a few years back, until I found that we could quote from Aladdin's message-and-mail reading application. Here's Joe Meehan's tip on how to do it. There are several Aladdin tricks you need to know: 1) You can copy the whole original message by pressing [alt] C. 2) You can paste the original message using [alt] V 3) You can paste a quote (same as above with the ">"s by [alt] Q 4) You can copy a section from your reply (maybe part of the original message by highlighting it with the mouse (hold left button) and pressing [alt] C. 5) Paragraphs can be reformatted by using [alt] P. 6) [Alt] D delets a line or all highlighted text. It's a good idea to copy the ooriginal message, delete what you don't want to quote, reformat the remaining message (the lines may be too long if you skip this step, then highlight the text, do an [alt] C to copy; [alt] D to delete; then an [alt]Q to quote. It all works a lot faster than it sounds. Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 39 Sat Sep 10, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 09:07 EDT Albert, So, does orange book come after this CD-Bridge you're talking about ? Daniel, Okay. The ultimate goal of the M.O.S.T. driver (as I understand it) is to allow access to Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia, but at the moment that is for a future time which may be a long way off. At this point the M.O.S.T. driver theoretically supports about eighteen disks that are in Compton's current catalog in the M.O.S.T. format. Compton's has about 100 titles in their Spring 1994 catalog, but only about 18 of them are in the M.O.S.T. format. For portability the M.O.S.T. format currently seems to support text, pictures, audio and video. Each title has check boxes on the back saying which of these features that particular title includes. For example, the "KGB/CIA World Factbook" includes only text and pictures (maps and charts) and the "Movies on TV and Videocassette" includes only text. Naturally the catalog doesn't detail which titles include which media. The beauty of the M.O.S.T. format is that Compton's can produce one disk and one set of packaging and produce a title that can be used on Windows, Dos, Macintosh and the Sony Multimedia CD-ROM player. It's interesting that the catalog doesn't mention that the M.O.S.T. disks are usable on the Macintosh, but the label on the box does. And oh, by the way, there's this crazy man (Hi Brian!) who's supporting the M.O.S.T. format for the Atari ST, but you probably won't find this out from Compton's. Compton's seems to have taken the attitude that Brian is welcome to do this without their help. If he can figure out how to read their index files he'll have a better program, if he can't it's no skin off their nose. His current version supports seeing the table of contents, reading selected articles from it and reading the "cross reference section" as found in the "Movies" disk where you can look at an entry for an actor and get a list of movies which can be clicked on to see the review of each movie. This is hypertext. In a release to be coming out "real soon now" it should also support the pictures as found in the "KGB/CIA World Fact Book". (These tend to be small GIF pictures of line drawn maps and charts.) The important thing here is that this driver will give us the ability to access these hypertexts off CD-ROM and get the benefits of this information without having to go out and purchase a P.C. I bought the "Movies" disk at a Micro Center in Atlanta and I've seen both "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies" and "The Pill Book" here in Macon (85 miles south of Atlanta) in an Office Depot store. Note that the M.O.S.T. driver requires ExtenDOS or a similar low-level CD-ROM driver in order to work. For fear of having a "long post" I won't detail the M.O.S.T. titles here, but could be convinced to do so later. EACH and every picture is stored on the ROM 5 different times. That's right, you get five (count 'em, 5!) different photo resolutions with each picture. This means that with the right software you can display everything from a corner screen snapshot to a wall poster. If you ever saw Harrison Ford in BLADE RUNNER perhaps you remember an important scene where he is viewing a photograph and keeps having his computer zoom in and enlarge a portion of it until he uncovers a major clue. Well, with Photo CD it is possible to emulate this effect. So, even though you can only get a maximum of about 100 photos on a photo CD, you really have 500 pictures counting all the resolutions available. I assume it might be in one of Kodak or Philips specifications since PhotoCD is their standard. Or maybe in the Green book (the CDI standard). The Orange Book details with recordable CD standards. There is the CD-MO (compact disc-magnetic optical) which is part 1. And the CD-WO (compact disc write once) standard which deals with the single and multi-session issues. This means that with the Grouch: Interesting you should mention this. Just the other day I was looking at the directory on a Corel Professional Photos CD and found that there was only one file for each of the pictures. There appeared to be nothing in hidden directory listings, and the file size of each pic was relatively small (4 MB if I recall correctly). This lead me to believe that the Corel disks do not feature all PhotoCD resolutions. Interestingly enough, I have found a couple CDs that have data in hidden directories that normally would be inaccessable. I'm unsure as to whether or not the PeeCee "install" routines would install these hidden files, but I'd say it's worth checking. MaxiFile shows the hidden files as greyed out entries in the listing. -- Dave @ Binary Ink ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 44 Mon Sep 12, 1994 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 07:55 EDT Dave, From what I recall PhotoCD pictures are compressed in the file. If all the pictures were expanded to full size is around 18 to 25 megs if memory serves me correctly. If you have hidden directories that could indicate some problems when the disc was created. Sommetimes when the disc was first written there was a slight "glitch" during the writing phase. This can happen when the data being read from the source (usually a hard drive) can not keep up with the CD-Writer and so garbage is placed instead. If this occurs in the right place you can have a new disc you can use as a frisbee. Another cause for "hidden" directories are discs that do follow the ISO-9660 format to the letter. Commodore CTV/CD-32 discs come to mind immediately, etc. Some discs were included specifically with certain drivers that can handle true ISO-9660 and extensions. One good example is having directories deeper than 8 levels deep. This MS-DOS limit was included in ISO-9660 and some CD-Writer software allows one to over-ride or ignore this limit of 8 levels. If the driver limits itself completely to ISO-9660 standard then these "extensions" will not be compatible. This is especially true of Unix ISO- 9660 discs since Unix does not have limits when it comes to depths of directories and most CD-Writer software allows the user/operator to override this "feature" on Unix machines. Another problem could be when the disc image is created on the source machine it could include non ISO-9660 compliant information. And since this is not always checked when the disc is created it can result in compatibility problems on many systems. -- Albert ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 46 Tue Sep 13, 1994 DMJ [dmj] at 19:39 CDT Dave, Albert: A single .PCD file can contain _all_ the different size images for a single photo. With ExtenDOS Pro, you can play audio CDs as easily as you can access the data on CD-ROMs. Put a CD-ROM in your drive, and access it like a large removable hard disk, or pop in an audio CD and use the included program to turn your CD-ROM drive into an audio player. Audio support ------------- ExtenDOS Pro includes the following audio functions: . play/pause/stop/eject . track/index forward or back . skip forward or back . cd repeat/shuffle. These are provided through an interface visually similar to a standard audio CD player, with clearly-marked buttons and a complete time/track display. If you have more than one attached CD-ROM drive, you can control each of them individually from the same easy-to-use control panel. ExtenDOS Pro conforms to the proposed CD-ROM software interface standard, simplifying use of CD audio by third-party products. Further details are available on request from Anodyne Software at the address below. Data support ------------ ExtenDOS Pro also satisfies your CD-ROM data needs. You can access any ISO9660 or High Sierra format CD-ROM as if it were a removable hard disk, switch between supported disk formats without a reboot, and access files of any size. It even provides a built-in configurable cache facility to speed up data access. And with the right drive, ExtenDOS Pro supports single-session or multisession photoCD as well. Hardware requirements --------------------- ExtenDOS Pro requires a SCSI CD- ROM drive connected directly to a SCSI port, or connected to an ACSI port via an ICD AdSCSI (or equivalent) host adapter. Simulator, There is a feature of newer SCSI CD-ROM drives called audio over SCSI. Basically it allows you to read the audio data over the SCSI bus rather than sending it out the audio outputs. You can write a program to save the data (audio) into a file for further processing or conversion. The Toshiba 3401 has this feature and so do some of the newer drives. -- Albert ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 89 Sun Sep 25, 1994 GREG at 00:58 CDT Albert: The SCSI Red Book to file transfer would allow a person to sample on a non- Falcon machine without a digital cartridge. It would also allow true digital editing as the D/A of the player and the A/D of the computer would be bypassed. I have a couple hybrid CD's now that have the Red Book audio tracks also listed in the directory of the CD in an AUDIO folder. ExtenDOS has been able to read these directories. I haven't tried to read them to the computer memory or copy to the HD. I'll have to give it a try. I would imagine on most Red Book audio tracks the copy protect flag has been set for the track. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 90 Sun Sep 25, 1994 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 03:33 EDT Greg, That was hilarious! The audio module works flawlessly and it is a real pleasure to use. There is one curious quirk that I noticed as well with my previous CD audio program: whenever the .ACC window is open there is a periodic electronic "pop" noise (rather like a crack or scratch in 78rpm records...something you've most likely never experienced) whether there is or is not a disc in the drive, before and while music is on. Shutting the .ACC window ends the noise. No big deal, but I wondered if you might have any idea what causes it. I did not upgrade because my dealer needs all the sales he can get and in this modest price range, it worth far more to keep him going. I promise, really I do, to get the registration cards for both versions to you. Thanks again for supporting Atari computers (and may we one day be able to write those words to the Atari Corporation). KenO. :) ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 106 Tue Sep 27, 1994 ARCHIVIST [Charlie] at 18:57 EDT See Flat, Peter demo'd the SARA program at the Sept. TAF meeting. It's an application to read the custom format of some IBM CD's. I forget the brand, but it's like the M.O.S.T. program. Perhaps someone here will know from this hint: I recall one of the disks he demo'd the program with was the 'Time Man of the Year' CD-Rom. You see, a lot of these 'informational' CD's simply have one giant text file with a second index file, and then a bunch of pictures that are called up as you read the text. SARA is a driver to interperate the index file and extract the appropriate section of text (plus pictures). It's still a little rough around the edges but Peter mentioned that he plans to release it as shareware when it's done. It should be a nice addition to ExtenDOS and the M.O.S.T. program. Peter doesn't have a GEnie account as far as I know, so if you need more information you can either ask Howard Carson (H.CARSON1 ... hey, he uploaded the press release) or Robert Boardman, TAF's secretary and Newsletter Editor, respectively. I can forward questions to the TAF BBS here in town, if you like, as well. We had one hooked up to a PC here a couple of years ago and I believe it used a proprietary interface so it would be a "no go" for the Atari. KenO: You need a SCSI-2 connecting cable for your drive. They are a little harder to find than a SCSI cable. If you are going to get a custom cable done, just tell whoever is making it that you need to hook a CD rom drive to a Sun workstation. Works every time. I think most Atari dealers carry these ready made too. Sorry for the resulting delay in responding, let's start catching up: Des, ExtenDOS supports the NEC 84-1 "out of the box". You may be able to get the Sony 555 working by twiddling an ExtenDOS parameter, but I don't have any experience of that particular drive. Albert, The kind folks at Plextor have just shipped me the manula for their 4plex drives. At a quick glance it's pretty SCSI-2 compliant, so will probably work by tweaking the D= parameter ... but in any case, I'll be adding support for it. Any beta test volunteers? The new Toshiba 3501 was just reviewed by a UK PC magazine ... they rated it as about 50% faster overall than the 3401. Specs: One-third stroke seek time 175ms Max transfer rate 1.8Mb/sec (burst) 600kb/sec (sustained) D.FARRINGTO1, I'm not sure about the problem with skipping or ejecting the CD. Please remind me what kind of drive you have. As far as stopping playing, you are probably experiencing a bug that I discovered yesterday. It was introduced at the last minute when fixing another problem (the programmer's favourite explanation). Selecting SHUFFLE and/or REPEAT on the accessory doesn't work properly once the accessory window is closed. I'll be posting a fix here as soon as possible. Lee, Thanks for reposting the announcements! Simulator, Your suggestion has been under consideration for a while! However, before anyone gets too excited, be aware that most CD-ROM drives don't provide support for what you want. A few do, including Toshiba and Sony. If anyone can point me to a file layout for .WAV files, I'd appreciate it ... Stan, Thanks for the kind words (the ones that suggested that I was too young to have heard a 78). Greg's suggestion re cables is a good one. Spud Boy, Sounds like you have ExtenDOS v1.20. Look for EDOS_121.LZH which upgrades it to v1.21 & should fix your problem without tweaking parameters. I hope they take CD-ROM into account! One thing that I do to make searching for things on CD-ROM easier is I do a directory of each CD-ROM into a file. Then when I'm looking for something, I can search the file. The best method I've found to do this, unfortunately, involves a PC utility called WHEREIS. Using PC Whereis (on a PC naturally) you can get a listing of all files on the CD-ROM with the full path listed at the end of the same line that has the filename on it. That way you can use a GREP-like search utility to get a listing of the files you're interested in - each listed with their full path. We need an ST utility that will do a directory listing like this. Thanks! ========> Sam_030 ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 197 Sun Oct 30, 1994 J.BATTEY1 [Dal.I-Dotter] at 23:40 CST Lee & Hal, The rumour is false. The interal drive on my MegaSTE is formatted with ICD's software ( I have a LINK on the external ) and has the Supra booter installed. It runs just fine. The ICD software should work fine. I've also forgotten what kind of CD-ROM you've got. If it's the only external device it probably needs SCSI termination. This may be available inside the drive or you may need an external terminator. What SCSI ID numbers are you using for all the devices ? BTW, to have Aladdin retain your line spacing, put a space in front of any lines you don't want wrapped, like your signature. John L., Thanks for the info. Do you have ExtenDOS and/or a CD-ROM drive ? Take Care, Lee B. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 199 Mon Oct 31, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 23:17 EST If you're looking for an excuse to buy ExtenDOS. but you don't have a CD-ROM drive yet, Anodyne Software has a very small quantity of Toshiba 3301 drives for sale, packaged with ExtenDOS Pro. The Toshiba 3301, the precursor to the popular 3401, supports both single-session photoCD and full audio. The 3301 is a single-speed drive with relatively high performance, as measured by CDBENCH: Random Full Data Drive access stroke transfer ----- ------ ------ -------- AppleCD SC Plus 385ms 550ms 147 kB/sec NEC CDR-25 982ms 2004ms 151 kB/sec Panasonic CR-501 450ms 770ms 147 kB/sec => Toshiba 3301 355ms 484ms 151 kB/sec <= These drives are as new, although not in their original boxes, and include a caddy. They do not include a SCSI cable, since the type of cable you need depends on your system. The external drives have standard Centronics 50-pin connectors for SCSI-in & -out. US prices are as follows: Internal drive with ExtenDOS Pro $99.95 External drive with ExtenDOS Pro $129.95 Please add $10 for shipping. Please contact Anodyne Software for further information.
