Any news? Daniel ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 3 Mon Jul 18, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 18:56 EDT Glad to see an ExtenDOS topic. I have "Secret of ExtenDOS" ... that's right, a singular version of my "Secrets" tips 'n' tricks. (That's because I've only had a day or two to work with ExtenDOS.) IT MUST NOT HAVE THE TT RAM FLAGS TURNED ON. It crashes when EXTENDOS.PRG is set for TT RAM. I suspect Roger is not a TT user, or he would have spotted this right away in development. I don't know yet if the BOS and DOS drivers can have their TT RAM flags on, but ExtenDOS can't, at least not in my system. I suspect others may be the same. ... Flash! I have a second secret, so now I can say I am working on "Secrets of ExtenDOS".... This one is neat. Listen up, folks. You know from the documentation that after the BOS and DOS lines, you can enter the full pathnames of programs you want to run after ExtenDOS, right? Heck, that's only half right. You can use ExtenDOS as an program launcher any way you want. In other words, you can comment out the BOS and DOS lines and just have ExtenDOS run specific programs (in the order you list them), or you can have ExtenDOS run specific programs BEFORE the BOS and DOS drivers as well as after them. Here's an excellent example. ExtenDOS will not work properly if ICD's write cache is active. If you normally use the write cache (which speeds up hard- disk operations by a factor of 3 to 10 or more), you can't boot up with ExtenDOS without running ICD's HDUTIL.PRG, setting the write cache to OFF, saving the configuration and rebooting. But because ExtenDOS will run any program BEFORE the BOS and DOS drivers, all you need to do is put a line like this before the BOS and DOS lines: c:\drivers\cacheoff.prg (with the pathname changed to the location of your ICD cache utilities -- you know, the ones that came with your ICD software) and you can boot up with ExtenDOS perfectly. Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 4 Mon Jul 18, 1994 D.MCANDREW at 22:06 EDT (Goodness, I had no idea this came about as recent as this...) Has anyone been successful in setting up the CONFIG file for dealing with 2 (or more) CD-ROMs within a system setup?? I recently added a Toshiba XM-4101B within my tower & coexists with a Syquest 270 and an external NEC CDR-25. Right now the boot-up seems to recognize everything, but I cannot open a directory window to the Toshiba. I can to the NEC-25. I have SCSI IDs set at 0 for the Syquest, 4 - Toshiba, and 5 - NEC. The physical and logical ids are Z:5 & P:Z for the NEC, and W:4 & Q:W for the Toshiba. I'm still testing and am beginning to suspect I may have a problem with the Toshiba. Hope to hear tha Anodyne is out here in cyberspace somewhere! It's All Relative ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 6 Tue Jul 19, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:39 EDT I haven't tried ED with two drives yet. (Gimme a chance, will ya? ). Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 7 Tue Jul 19, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 21:19 EDT (In my worst... Gilda Radnor impersonation... "Never mind"!) Woops, my fault. It turned out that one of the mounting screws was too long and preventing the CD drawer from operating freely. The Toshiba now coexists somewhat happily with everything else. Something to add with your "Secrets.." file, Al. In order to add additional CD-ROMS, all you need to do is add duplicate (essentially) ...*BOS and *DOS dirver lines in the CNF file. You just have to ensure that you work 'backwards' from the drive letters Z (for physical id) and P (for the logical id). Hope that makes sense. Now what I really would like to know is just how Photo CD multi-session really works. I mean specifically. Does Extendos care about this or not ? (Transparent maybe?) I try using Calamus SL and its PCD driver to read such a disk, but it just accesses the CD... forever. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I shall be cruising through the cat/topics to see if this answer lies elsewhere. Thanks folks. Time to cut it short. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 8 Wed Jul 20, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 06:17 EDT I have one Photo CD so far, and ExtenDOS is able to handle it. I wonder if there are varied standards for Photo CD disks? Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 9 Wed Jul 20, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 20:51 EDT Interesting question; I have recently acquired two (but my first) Photo CDs. They appear to be relatively new on the market. There are 100 photos of a particular theme on each disk. One is called SKIES and the other is called WALLS. (I am anticipating using them for DTP if you hadn't noticed... but then alot of what I do is usually quite obvious.) So far I have not yet been able to see them onscreen, yet the packaging shows the 100 thumbnails. They look good (but then my vision isn't doing so hot lately). Catch you later. (P.S. Al, if you don't mind my asking... just how are you able to cover so many categories and topics within these RT's???? DO you have an automatic retrieval somehow I suspect? Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 17 Fri Jul 22, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 07:22 EDT In fact (as VORTEX might also be indicating), I notice that EXTENDOS seems to work for the most part under GENEVA, but gives an error message of -1 each time you access the drive. THat is to say, any time you open the window or change to any other directory level - this error prompt comes up. It doesn't do this if I am not running GENEVA. Will this be made compatible soon?? ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 18 Fri Jul 22, 1994 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 09:32 EDT Simulator, How technical of an explaination do you want on how multi-session works? For technical details you need the Orange Book and look in the part II section which details the multi-session for CD-WO discs. Also Kodak was giving away their multi-session spec that they use for Photo CD. The one that Kodak uses and other manufactures use is slightly different and can cause some problems. From what I recall the Kodak multi-session specification was free to anyone who wanted it just by calling them. There was a little bit about it in AEO vol 2 number 1 in my CD-ROM article. But it was a logical explaination rather than a very detailed technical examination of the multi-session topic. -- Albert ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 19 Fri Jul 22, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 21:12 EDT Hhhmmm... I see I should have thought about that a tad more. Perhaps I should have said something like, without using something such as the PCD driver of Calamus SL or Photo SHow Pro, can one view a 'directory' of such a photo cd to determine the 'files' that represent any of the five resolutions of one photo. Would you see such a list? Not yet having made the "experience" I don't yet know what to expect. I am aware of the identification of the different specs, red book, white book, yellow, (whatever other colours... yuk, yuk), 9660, and High Sierra. But until one (particularly me) actually gets his hands on, it is difficult to visualize just what to expect. (Guess this explains why my hobby is so blasted expensive.) Hope that gives a better idea of where I'm coming from. Talk at ya later. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 20 Sat Jul 23, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 08:36 EDT Al, No problem. Well, golle, shucks, and hush my mouth (sheepish grin)./ OK, folks. I finally learned something today. And all this time I'd been using GENEVA on my Falcon, little did I know that Photo SHow Pro runs under Multitos... and the Photo CD ROM (XA) driver only operates under Multitos. Now I know. Oh, I'm not complaining. I enjoy learning new stuff. It just takes me time is all. Now I know what I've been hearing/reading all this time. As for my rambling I will now get to the point of this topic (and, of course, my question), will EXTENDOS be upgraded at some point to include the XA standard (as it already deal with the other two) ?? Later, 'gators. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 22 Sat Jul 23, 1994 VORTEXT at 22:15 PDT As to the error -1 message under Geneva. That is to say, when the program relies on the the system path it can't find it's resource files on other partitions, and the Geneva file selector couldn't access the CD-ROM either. I have been testing a fix for this (up until it quite working a few days ago, I think the beta version expired or something) and it had been working great. The other problem with the error each time you open the drive or folder on the CD ROM had to do with an option in NeoDesk. Under 'Set Preferences' and 'More...' there is a switch for checking executable boot sectors. With this turned off, the problem went away. Not sure if this only happened with Geneva and NeoDesk or not, but it was fixed by changing this in NeoDesk. RandyH ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 26 Mon Jul 25, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 07:17 EDT Randy H., It was the NeoDesk "check executable boot sectors" switch that I was thinking of. Look out for an announcement here shortly, including upgrade info. Al Fasoldt, Thanks for posting the info re TT RAM etc. There's now a note in the README file about not setting the TT RAM flags. BTW, ExtenDOS 1.20 should now get along just fine with the ICD write cache. D.MCANDREW, ExtenDOS works fine with multiple drives (I've had up to 3 attached concurrently). All you need to do is have 2 *BOS lines & 2 *DOS lines ... it sounds like you're doing the right thing. In fact, the drives can be any letters that aren't used (actually the _physical_ drives are distinct in ExtenDOS's tiny mind from the logical, so you can even have them the same, but I thought that might be a mite confusing to try to explain in the manual). Before that I wasn't able to boot off the hard drive at all and even after I unplugged the CDrom it was a disaster. Any way lesson to the wise the Mac World Nec came with the Id set to 4. The two little buttons in the back + advances the number - reduces the number. How cute. Then as Al said it is plug and go and don't forget to back up your important hard drive data!!!!!!!!!!! Mine just plugged in and worked (after I set the RAM flags to ST RAM). ID 4 worked fine, too, since my TT internal drive is ID 0, my big Toshiba is ID 1, my Floptical is ID 2. The SCSI IDs don't have to be sequential on the TT (nor on the Link, as far as I know), so I just left the NEC 210 at 4. You can read the full text in EXTENPRO.TXT and EDOS_V12.TXT which have (just) been uploaded to the libraries. ExtenDOS v1.20 is now available. It fixes the Geneva problem, works properly with the ICD write cache, and supports multisession photoCD. Suggested retail remains at $29.95 (your mileage may vary ;-)). A patch file will be uploaded to the GEnie libraries (probably next weekend) to allow owners of previous versions to upgrade. ExtenDOS Pro will be available in mid-August. It provides all of the functions of ExtenDOS v1.20, plus audio CD support for many drives. The audio support is built into the drivers, thus allowing future third-party software to control/play audio CDs in a device-independent manner. ExtenDOS Pro includes a DA/GEM program that implements an audio CD player. Suggested retail price is $39.95. Upgrades will be available to existing ExtenDOS owners. What I did was to put the termination restors back on the hard drive. When I did this I was able to have my hard drive 1st. When I had the CD-ROM 1st. the files on the HD were getting corrupted. Everything works fine now with this setup. Joe ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 39 Thu Jul 28, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 22:01 EDT TO: Roger, Well, what I really mean is that it appears I can read the directory structure of either an ISO9660 or High Sierra as if it were 'just another hard drive'. This I can do just in opening a window to the device (while in Neodesk/Geneva). But it appears I can't do that with a Photo CD in place. Why not? In order to run Phot SHow Pro & subsequently view any Photo CD, it appears I must boot up under Multi-TOS. If it weren't for the memory requirements... why couldn't I do this under Geneva/Neodesk? Will the XFS driver work under that environment? If so, how? (Until I can actually max my Falcon's memory without losing some portion of its internals... maybe the Barracuda can help there... will it possible to have a CD driver that can provide all 3 formats transparently to the user?) I hope this is making sense, as anyone can tell this is not an area of expertise for me... at least not yet. Thanks. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 40 Fri Jul 29, 1994 GREG at 20:13 CDT D.MCANDREW: You need MultiTOS to run an XFS driver. Anodyne has an update to ExtenDOS coming that may help you. Wouldn't you know it, that I'd be asking such questions without even knowing about Anodyne's anouncement this weekend?? Go figure. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 42 Mon Aug 01, 1994 S.MCGEE2 [Sam] at 18:33 PDT Anodyne Software, I noticed that I can run EXTENDOS.PRG from the Desktop but then there are occasional performance problems: long CD access times, CD not found, etc. I only power up my CD player on demand which is usually after my system has been running for several hours. Can the program be changed to run from the Desktop reliably or is the AUTO folder TSR necessary? Secondly, will there be a fix for the P>15 problem using the GEMini disc? Both of these requests are trivial but it never hurts to ask:) Sam ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 43 Tue Aug 02, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 00:06 EDT D.MCANDREW, I don't believe the NEC 25 will support photoCD, but the Toshiba will. Please send me the exact message (spaces are important). ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 44 Tue Aug 02, 1994 GREG at 20:10 CDT D.MCANDREW: The NEC-25 will not support Photo CD. This is a hardware limitation, not a software one. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 45 Tue Aug 02, 1994 D.MCANDREW [Simulator] at 21:40 EDT To: GREG and R.BURROWS1 Well, the packaging for the NEC 25 said that it is PHOTO-CD CAPABLE but not multi-session. When I obtained OEM documentation on this from NEC, they sent me a doc on the model 35 (I called and a technician said they are functionally equivalent.) I have yet to test this (imminent within 24 hrs). According to the bootup, Extendos displays the following device ID names: NEC______CD-ROM_DRIVE:25 for the NEC 25, and TOSHIBA__CD- ROM_XM-4101TA for (the obvious). I used underscores for the blanks so they would be easier to count. For the Toshiba, the enclosed manual reads for the model(s): XM-4101B/TXM4101L1. I expect no significant differences from the manual and the enclosed equipment. For what it's worth, the only 2 Photo-CD disks that I have appear (from what I understand) to have 100 photos with an average compressed file size near 4megabytes. (Now that I can read these under MultiTOS. I can finally read the disk like any other disk! Duh, takes me a while. However, I believe this experience tells me that these were 'pressed' in a single session. Just how does one 'experience' multi-session? Is it multiple windows as a result of multiple accesses to the drive?? Just a dumb*** guess, but I'd love to know.) Thanks guys, nice to be around. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 46 Wed Aug 03, 1994 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 01:43 EDT Simulator, Multi-Session just adds another TOC (Table of Contents) on the CD that gives it the locations of all the directories, files etc. This includes the new data that was added to the disk. The new TOC is not at the beginning of the disc that all CD-ROM drives look at first. If it is multisession it searches the disc for more TOCs. When it finds that last TOC )on the disk) it knows that it is the most current (up to date TOC) and uses it. -- Albert ps: From the user point of view the CD-ROM feels just like a normal single session experience. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 47 Wed Aug 03, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 06:26 EDT Simulator, The disks that have 100 photos are probably COREL photo disks, right ? They are ISO 9660 Format, not true Photo-CD format, like what Kodak sells and you can have made at the photo shops. L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] While I think I understand that, I was under the impression that if the disk were made in compliance with ISO 9660 - then I should be able to see the directory just by opening a window under Geneva/Neodesk as booting with Extendos... (this I usually do). Such is the case for a variety of other CDs that I have that seem to indicate their intended use for either PC/clone or Macintosh, or both. Yet these two CDs (which I did pick up at a computer show) don't seem to show me any reference to Corel or its trademark (what is that trademark anyway? I do see the Kodak Photo CD trademark but no other. Hhhm, stranger and stranger.) J.ROBORECKY [RAILROAD] I'll be glad to help. I can get this info uploaded tomorrow's date. A mechanical failure or delay during the writing of a disc can also make a single roll multi-session. If you request single-session only, most photo providers will honor your request. almost ALL commercial CD's in Photo CD format are single-session. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 51 Wed Aug 03, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 23:32 EDT Sam, Running EXTENDOS.PRG from the desktop should work just as well as from the AUTO folder. Roger Burrows / Anodyne Software ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 52 Thu Aug 04, 1994 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 00:57 EDT Simulator, ISO-9660 is a filesystem, just like DOS, GEMDOS and MAC's HFS filesystem. Some people call is a DOS filesystem but that is not really correct. The main reason is the ISO-9660 filesystem has many of the same limits that the DOS filesystem has. For example the 8 character limit on filenames and 3 character for extensions. That is the lowest level of compliance with the standard ISO-9660 (level 1). Levels 2 and 3 allow for 30 character filenames with 30 character extensions. This or rather these levels are rarely used at all. On Unix you can have 255 character filenames and many more attributes the simple ones that DOS/GEMDOS allows (hidden/system/read-only, etc). The Rock Ridge extension allows one to use the system use fields in the directory entries that are not used. In these special spaces one can store any operating specific stuff and still remain complain. Under Unix, Rock Ridge can store all 255 character filenames, have deep directories (DOS/GEMDOS is limited to 8 levels, Unix does not have a limit), store the permission bits for user, group, etc. Also you can store symbolic links (which allow one to use alias filename) for a file. For example on a normal ISO-9660 it displays the same icon for each file and folder when displayed on a MAC. By using Apple's extension to the ISO-9660 they can add icons and the specific MAC filesystem specific stuff and still remain compliant. This is why the system use fields are so useful. In general since almost all operating systems support the minimal level one standard for ISO-9660 there is really not much need to use the extensions. The exception would be the UNIX filesystem which really needs the Rock Ridge extensions to be effective. But even with the extensions it is still ISO-9660 complaint so it can be read on an DOS box, MAC, and the Atari. Another area where the ISO-9660 filesystem different is in the way the filesystem is defined. Under DOS/GEMDOS there is the FAT (file allocation table) which specifies which sectors are used for what files. On the ISO-9660 filesystem there is no FAT at all. Everything is simply defined as an offset and a length. Where the offset is the start sector and the length is how many bytes the file is. One must perform some simple math to calculate the number of sectors. Everything on a CD-ROM is contigious ... there is no need to jump all over the CD-ROM searching for the next sector. Just seek to the correct sector and read the X bytes which is defined by the filesize. Like DOS, the ISO-9660 has a boot record called the primary volume descriptor. This gives some background information on the CD-ROM, such as creator, date and time, etc. This primary volume descriptor (PVD) is just like the boot sector on a floppy or hard disk on a DOS machine. Under ISO, the PVD is at sector 16 which is different from DOS which needs to have its boot sector at sector zero. The PVD also includes the sector where the root directory is located. The root directory itself is actually a file that has a start sector and length. The difference is the contents of the file is the actual directory for other sub-directories and files on the disc. So in reality the ISO-9660 is a very simple filesystem to use and understand. Much simplier than DOS or GEMDOS and most definitely the UNIX filesystem. -- Albert ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 53 Thu Aug 04, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 02:23 EDT Roger, Thanks for the tip. It is overkill for most uses and hardware requirements are very heavy. Unless your doing magazine covers or wall-sized posters, the Photo CD Master format will suffice for your uses. The highest resolution of Master is 3072 by 2048 which would convert to a 18 meg TIF or 36 meg EPS in true color. Check out Damien's post in CAT 30; TOP 9 on the Photo Show Pro update now in the works for the TT. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 107 Sat Aug 20, 1994 FALCONER at 05:19 PDT Hi, Y'All........... :0 A question, please, regarding the use of ExtenDOS: On Page 3, >System Requirements< , it states that "SCSI CD-ROM drives are supported.......via the ACSI DMA port AND the ICD ADSCSI Host Adapter (or equivalent). Now, knowing that there are SEVERAL VERSIONS of this fine device out and about, I am curious as to whether or not this program is meant to work with ALL KNOWN SCSI CD-ROM drives, and ALL of the versions of this host. I know that it works under the LINK, as the LINK can reconize ad acknowledge darn near EVERYTHING. What I would like to know is this: I have a CDR-25BJ unit, which is said to be the NEC 25. I am of the notion that this is a SCSI-2 device/unit. Am I correct?? If so, WHICH of the existing ICD hosts available will recognize this unit, or will THEY ALL do so?? Last item: Page 18, Appendix C: Troubleshooting---it mentions that SCSI equipment requires a >terminator< . Could somebody please clarify this for me/us, and tell us how/what we need to do to set this function (!?)?? Also, is this drive indeed a SCSI-2 drive??? So many questions, and all we want to do is >FINALLY< use the CD's we have been accumulating!!! THANKS in advance for all HELP!! :) Ta..........Tracy......(Long Time, Huh?!) :0 ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 108 Sat Aug 20, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 09:30 EDT Greg, Roger sent me an upgrade via e-mail, asking me to test it. You're right; it's wonderful. Falconer, The NEC-25 and all SCSI devices need to work on a SCSI bus that is terminated by resistors on each end of the bus. Usually all you need to worry about is the termination on the outer end, which means you plug a terminating connector ($5 or so) into the SCSI OUT port on the drive, or just flip a switch on the drive. Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 109 Sat Aug 20, 1994 GREG at 12:23 CDT Al: The update to ExtenDOS is available for download on GEnie. I think the filename is EDOS_121.ZIP. All users, particularly those with v1.20, should upgrade. The patch archive is called EDOS_121.LZH. I'm also uploading two other files that ExtenDOS users may be interested in: CDBENCH.LZH this is a benchmark (performance) program for your CD-ROM. Just how fast is it anyway? SUNFIX.LZH this is a program to allow Sun-compatible drives to be used with ExtenDOS. Feedback is encouraged, as always. Roger Burrows / Anodyne Software ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 111 Sat Aug 20, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 17:56 EDT Albert, I've seen the announcement re Plextor (they used to be Texel in case anyone is interested). It looks very good. Do you know if they are shipping yet? Steve, I just got a registration card from a user with the Reno portable and a Falcon. I haven't had any phone calls from him, so I'm assuming it works OK. Do you know what the Reno really is (i.e. what id ExtenDOS display when it boots with the Reno)? Also, if anyone has access to one of these, I'd be interested to see the performance reported by CDBENCH (just uploaded here). FALCONER, You should have my email by now. v1.21 will fix your problems. Also, the NEC25 is definitely _not_ SCSI-2, although it really doesn't matter for the basic functions. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 112 Sat Aug 20, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 20:42 EDT Roger, have you tested the Plextor? I read a PC CD mag that had the Plextor rated as "best value". Their external kit is much 200.00 less than the Toshiba. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 113 Sat Aug 20, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 22:07 EDT Greg, I downloaded the upgrade, and applied it to my copy of 1.20. But I am also testing the Pro version, and I am assuming (from the larger file size of ExtenDOS in the Pro version) that I can't just interchange the files. So I'm not using v. 1.21 yet. Lou, I'd say the best value is the NEC 210 that MacWarehouse is selling for $199. It's an external drive, no caddy needed, and you get a cable free. Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 114 Sat Aug 20, 1994 GREG at 23:40 CDT Al: Is the NEC-210 a SCSI-2 device or only SCSI-1? Lots of complaints on the PC side. We had it as a not- suggested brand for the Falcon due in part to its PC problems more than anything. Once adjusted for write-once it then had problems reading stamped CD's. I think they may have changed names to shake a bad reputation and get a clean start for their new models. We've got no Plextor complaints to date. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 116 Sat Aug 20, 1994 B.SALDANA1 [BOB S] at 22:26 PDT Greg I believe it's Scsi 1. I had a Texel [plextor] and had problems and took it back but when I think about it may have been a parity or termination problem. Bob S ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 117 Sun Aug 21, 1994 STEVE-J [Steve @ NMG] at 06:31 EDT R.BURROWS1 - Maybe I can borrow one of the Reno drives from work (we sell them for $329.99) -- one was returned "defective" a few days ago, but I've moved to a different store. Of course, I'd have to have a copy of ExtenDOS too! The packaging clearly claims a 180ms access time, though, on EVERY side of the box (it's also has a SCSI-2 interface -- cable included!). I still can't really justify that kind of expense for my system, though, even with my discount. ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 118 Sun Aug 21, 1994 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 09:23 EDT Thanks for the tip, Al. Sometimes we neglect to let people know that we appreaciate their efforts. ExtenDOS is a much needed and welcomed tool. Nice work and cudos on the fixes. Daniel ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 144 Sun Aug 28, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 12:26 EDT Roger, I need help. I picked up five new CD-ROMs from Greg at the CAF. They include the first ones I've accessed that have Atari programs on them -- and the three that have programs (Gemini and the two German collections) are giving my setup fits. I'm using the version of Pro 2.0 you sent to test. When I try to run a program that's on the CD, I get bombs from Geneva. If I copy the program to my HD (along with any supporting files and so on) I get bombs. If I go to the packed or zipped version on the CD and extract the files to my HD, the program will run. In other words, something is interfering with these executable files. Text files come up in my viewer just fine, however. In brief, even when I copy the files from the CD to my hard drive, they can't be run. MaxiFile copies them without protest, but the files are just not intact, apparently. Also, NeoDesk 4 can access any of the files and folders on all of these CD- ROMS, but cannot copy them successfully when any nested folders are traversed. I can go down into the folder tree with Neo 4 and then copy files from that folder, but can't (for example) drag a folder from the CD-ROM to a location on my har drive. Neo 4 gives me an alert saying that a file can't be accessed and then tries to access the others. This message apparently refers to the folder access, since it's the first thing Neo 4 does before trying to copy the actual files. The mystery is that no matter how I copy the files (MaxiFile, which I trust implicitly, or Neo 4, which I have no reason to mistrust), they are not runnable. I've eliminated all the usual possibilities (RSC fiels that can't be found, and so on) by concentrating on files that are stand-alone apps or DAs. STZIP complains aout the ZIP files, but usually the programs that it extracts run OK. The complaint ("fails CRC check") may be telling us something about how the data is being (mis)handled off the CD drive. Roger, I'm at a loss. I've played with the ExtenDOS cache settings without much effect. I haven't gone back and installed any of the previous versions of EDOS, in the understanding that this one should be *better* behaved in every way. It certainly seems that way. I also tried turning off the ICD cache, and that (oddly enough) made things worse. What would cause this oddity with the integrity of files on the CD-ROMs? And why wouldn't texts be affected? (Or, if they are, is it possible that the change to the byte structure is so minor that it isn't even visible when a text is read?) Argh! Help!! Al ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 145 Sun Aug 28, 1994 M.EASTER [Mike] at 11:06 PDT Al - re unexecutable executables on/from CDROM Wonder what you would find out if you used Compare to compare the executables which would run (decompressed from CDROM to HD) to those which would not (copied from or non-compressed on CDROM)? I'm assuming there are compressed versions of the non-compressed on the CDROM. We generally try to send a copy to a developer whose product make the front page. John L. Battey Dal.I-Dotter ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 148 Sun Aug 28, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 18:28 EDT Mike and everyone, Thanks for the quick replies. I got everything working again after some app (was it Geneva? I dunno; all I saw was an alert from something that was running) telling me I had a bus error -- hardware! So I checked the cable connections and one of the SCSI cable-ends was slightly loose. It was on the last device in a good-size chain, too, which may have worsened things. Neo 4 still has a problem with access into nested folders, but a change in the EDOS buffers may fix that. (It can access nested folders fine to run programs on the CD-ROMs, but it complains when I ask it to copy stuff that is nested inside the current folder.) Luckily, MaxiFile is still here, and I would not leave the home row without it. :-) The Fractal Frenzy CD-ROM I got a CAF is a knockout, BTW. (Now that I can view it!) John B., Six hour drive back, then seven hours at the keyboard. Yech. I'm worn out. Loose connectors. Too long a SCSI cable (Chinon drives in particular) Interference. At CAF we had our SCSI cable looped around the monitor and were getting random read problems until we moved it a couple inches from the monitor. This can be a tough one as the read error are more random than those caused by other problems. P.S. Don't try the D.A.M.E. recorder demo on the GEMini CD when you are tired. Its first question when it boots is "Is it OK to reformat your hard disk for sound storage?". ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 151 Tue Aug 30, 1994 P.FLETCHER4 at 18:57 EDT I was wondering if anyone can tell me why my apple cd-300 works perfectly with my Falcon, but not at all with my 1040st. I have the device driver at BOS, C:\EXTENDOS\CD.BOS T=16, Z:5. My falcon finds the drive at scsi 5, but the st seems to not find it at asci 5. Do I have to change the device line for the St or should they be the same? I also thought that maybe the apple cd-300 does not power the link. If that is the case I assume I cannot use it with my st. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pete ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 152 Tue Aug 30, 1994 DMJ [dmj] at 18:37 CDT Greg, After you get finished going through the disc, make sure you find a PC and install FractInt and start playing around. Then you'll never have to worry about running out. (Any fractal generator on the ST will do as well, but as yet I haven't seen any that generate nearly as many fractal types as FractInt. Oddly enough the sources are included; anyone feel up to an ST port?) ~dmj ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 153 Tue Aug 30, 1994 GREG at 20:30 CDT DMJ: Somewhere/someplace I saw a copy of the port posted. The Link IS getting power! But, if you are using a Link or the older versions of the ICD adaptors they need Parity turned off. In order to do this on the CD-300 you must disassemble the case and get at the back of the drive. I believe there is a purple wire back there (Okay so it may not be purple BUT it is labled parity) - Clip it. It should now work fine. PLUS, if you are also using it on a Mac it will STILL work fine (even with the wire clipped). I am assuming it works on a Falcon because the Falcon does not care about SCSI parity. But, since I do not own a Falcon this is only a guess. Hope this helps. P.S. I used a CD-300 on my ST & STe with a Link Host Adaptor until I got a CD- 150 for $99 and put the 300 back on the Mac. Truth be told the 150 is actually faster on the STe than the 300 is on the Mac! ------------ Category 2, Topic 30 Message 155 Tue Aug 30, 1994 FALCONER at 22:38 PDT Marlin: Are you running a CD-ROM unit with an OLDER version of an ICD host?? I think they're getting $39 for the CD, which contains 500 fonts in TrueType and PostScript Type 1 formats. ------------
