*** Terradesk AUTO-boot configuration *** (c)1994 Tony Smolar WHY I WROTE THIS PROGRAM: I decided to write this program for several reasons. First I use Terradesk on my default boot partition, the problem was it would load my monochrome DESKTOP.CFG no matter what res I booted in, I would have to manually load in another configuration everytime I booted, so I wanted a program to automatically select the right .CFG for the resolution I booted in. The second purpose was that I wanted to select the resolution I booted up in at boot-up. Terradesk offers no built-in way to switch resolutions. and one of the accessories I use doesn't like to have the resoultion changed and it usually bombs. The solution was to pick the resolution before the accessories are loaded, this is done by selecting the appropriate DESKTOP.INF file, which tells GEM which resolution to boot into (Assuming the TOS version\ you use supports this properly, some don't handle this properly.) This program is designed with Terradesk in mind, it can be used for other applications that need different configurations for different resolutions too. I use this program with TOS 1.62 in my STe, with Terradesk set to AUTO boot. It should work fine with any TOS version, although versions less than 1.4 will require Headstart or Startgem to auto-boot a GEM application. USAGE: TERABOOT.PRG goes in the Auto folder of the disk or partition that you boot from, when loaded, it reads in its configuration file, and if the machine is booted in color, it gives the user 3 seconds to select low res, this program was designed with the standard ST modes in mind, I don't know how well it can be used on a TT or a Falcon with their extra modes. In any case only three graphic modes are supported. When the program knows what resolution is going to be used, it checks for the DESKTOP.INF, and DESKTOP.CFG files, if the right ones are already selected, the program does nothing further, if the right file are not already selected, it will activate the appropriate ones. It does this simply by renaming the files. TERBTCFG.PRG is used to set the pathes and filenames of the DESKTOP.INF and DESKTOP.CFG files. The Desktop.Inf files should be in the root directory of the boot drive. The desktop.cfg files should be in the same directory as Terradesk. All desktop.inf files must be in the same directory, and all desktop.cfg files must also be in the same directory. when running TERBTCFG.PRG, the desktop.inf files and DESKTOP.CFG files should have their alternate filenames, I use DESKLO.INF and DESKLO.CFG for the low res files, DESKMED.INF, and DESKMED.CFG for medium, and DESKHI.INF and DESKHI.CFG for High resolution. There should be no files named DESKTOP.INF and DESKTOP.CFG at the time this program is run, However those names must be manually typed in when the configuration program askes for them. Future versions of TERBTCFG.PRG will be more automated. take a look at the included TERABOOT.CFG file to get an idea of what it should look like. That is the configuration I use. This program has made using my computer much easier, I hope it does the same for other people.
