MUSICALC v2.02 Copyright 1989 By Steve MacMillan with GFA Basic Musicalc v2 is a complete re-write and includes all previous Musicalc functions plus the addition of footage calculations. Musicalc should prove useful for musicians, recording engineers, home studio owners, and people working with video and film. In addition to normal numeric calculations, Musicalc will preform time base and footage calculations. The most unique feature however is its ability to calculate bar (or beat), SMPTE time, and footage offsets referenced to a starting SMPTE time. Musicalc also includes several useful utilities such as a metronome, a stop watch, and it generates delay charts based on tempo. All time entry is based on a 24 hour clock with hours, minutes, seconds, and frames (HH:MM:SS:FF). The frames will depend on the SMPTE mode. 24 frame SMPTE is the film standard and each second is divided up into 24 frames (each frame corresponds to one frame of film). 25 frame is the European standard or EBU (European Broadcasting Union) code. 30 frame is the American black and white television standard and the most common type of SMPTE for pop music production. Drop frame SMPTE is a special adjusted version of 30 frame SMPTE where certain frames are skipped in order to correct for American color television. Drop frame is used extensively in video production. All footage entry is broken down into feet and frames, or feet and inches depending on the film type selected. Frames for the three film sizes (16mm, 35mm, & 70mm), and inches for the three tape speeds (7.5, 15, & 30 inches per second). While entering footage the decimal button allows for entry of frames or inches much like the fraction of a floating point number. Numeric calculator: Select the 'Numeric' mode and Musicalc is a normal numeric calculator. Time Base calculator: Select the 'Time Base' mode and Musicalc will add or subtract two SMPTE times. Or you may multiply or divide a SMPTE time by a number. All answers are based on a 24 hour clock: 12:00:00:00 + 12:00:00:00 = 00:00:00:00. Footage calculator: Select the 'Footage' mode and Musicalc will add or subtract two footage entries. Or you may multiply or divide a footage by a number. Note: all three calculator modes may be printed at a printer by enabling the 'Print' button on the calculator module. SMPTE Locator: Select the 'SMPTE Locate' mode to calculate bar or beat, SMPTE time, and footage offsets from the SMPTE start time. Set the 'Start' time to the SMPTE address of beat one of your song or segment. The start time is the SMPTE address of zero film or tape footage as well. You have the choice of entering bar (or beat) numbers, SMPTE time, or footages, by selecting the entry mode in their corresponding windows. By entering a bar number, Musicalc will then calculate that bar number's SMPTE address and the difference in footage from the start. Negative bar (or beat) numbers and footage are allowed. The locator calculations are affected by SMPTE type, film type, tempo, and time signature. Stop Watch: Use the 'space bar' to start and stop the clock. The clock may be reset while running or stopped, with the 'Undo' button. Metronome: Use the 'space bar' to stop or start the metronome. The metronome has an eigth-note mode where it clicks twice per beat. The metronome runs at the speed selected in the tempo window. The current time signature affects the bar/beat display. Delay Chart: Selecting 'Delay Chart' prints a breakdown of the current tempo's note values in milliseconds to the screen and/or printer. Note values are affected by time signature as well as tempo. Time for four bars, and frames per beat, are also calculated. Entering tempo: Select 'Enter' and manually enter a tempo between 50 and 250 beats per minute. The tempo may also be set by selecting 'Tap'. The first tap on the space bar starts the clock and 16 taps later Musicalc computes the average tempo for quarter-note taps. Entering Time signature: One of four time signature can be directly selected or the 'Other' button allows for manual entry of any unusual time signature. Quit w/Save: The SMPTE start time, SMPTE mode, film type, tempo, time signature, locate mode, and current Musicalc mode, can be saved while quitting. When Musicalc finds "MUSICALC.INF" in its current path it will auto load these settings when first run. Version 2.02 fixes a display bug when Turbo ST 1.82 is present. And Musicalc now runs in HiRez but only on half the screen. Please send suggestions, bug reports, or gifts of time, to my Genie address: S.MACMILLAN. Thank you and enjoy.
