Image Editor DA v0.65 Demo by Mike Bergman Copyright 1988 WARNING: This program only works in high resolution monchrome. Attempts to use this on a color system is futile...but it won't crash anything! Maybe later versions will support medium resolution... Purpose : To provide tool to edit monochrome .IMG files for desktop publishing and related activities. There are no less than three DTP programs and a "draw" program that incorporates .IMG files and two scanners that have an optional save funtion to .IMG format. Degas and Degas Elite file formats have become the standard for the Atari ST which weakens the capabilities of the end-user. Degas Elite is limited to 640 x 400 dots per file whereas the .IMG format is only limited to 35,535 x 35,535 dots per file regardless of the resolution or the number of colors used. The accessory allocates a block of memory on start up. The block is used to hold brushes, fills, files and the actual image in machine-specific format which is why the accessory scrolls as fast as it does. The default setting is 100K bytes. The default can be changed by installing a file called IMAGE.INF which hold an ascii representation of the number of kilobytes to be allocated. For instance, if "200" (without the quotes) is saved in the file then 200K bytes will be allocated. Keycommands: F1 Pencil Allows you to draw freehand. If the tip of the pencil is on a black pixel it will draw white. If it is on a white pixel it will draw black. F2 Brush There are twenty brushes available that enable the user to edit the picture with pattern overlays within the brush area. The brushes can be selected by pressing a and toggling through the "attributes". F3 Fill 36 Standard Atari fill patterns can be used. The patterns can be "locked" where the fill pattern will remain the same regardless of the position of the window or the image in the window, or it can be "unlocked" so that patterns can be offset. F4 Eraser A pure eraser. By selecting 1 an 8x8 eraser is activated. By selecting 2 a 16x16 eraser can be used. By selecting b the eraser becomes an inverted eraser that erases white pixels from a black surface. w changes it back to a white eraser. F5 Lines Allows the user to draw straight lines. The line pattern or line width can be changed by toggling through the attributes. F6 Ellipse Hollow ellipses can be formed with this function. Circles can be made by pressing the key while pressing the left mouse button. F7 Boxes Hollow rectangles can be formed with this function. Squares can be formed by pressing the key while pressing the left mouse button. F8 Polygon Polygons with 63 sides can be made with this tool. F9 Magnifier Sections of an image can be magnified by a factor of 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 by pressing 1-5. To leave the magnifier, press or click on the closer box or fuller box. F10 Not Implemented. All tools are implemented by pressing the left mouse button and stop when the left mouse button is released with the exception of the Polygon and the Magnifier. By pressing the left button a corner of the polygon is fixed in place. Release the left button to move the next side. Press the right button to close the polygon. Esc, Undo Erases the last command permanently. o Restores the original image. All editing to that point is lost. Arrow Keys Scrolls 25 pixels at a time. The window arrows scroll one pixel at a time. Paging moves the images half a page at a time. s Saves the image. The original .IMG file is saved as .BAK (not implemented on the demo version). r Reverses the image's colors. a Allows the user to set attributes of the lines, fills and brushes. This is similar to the command mode in UNIX vi. It suspends all editing activities until the user presses . Each attribute can be accessed by pressing the left and right arrow keys. Each attribute can be changed by pressing the up and down arrow keys on the cursor key pad. This is only a demo version. The "Save" function does not work and you can only look at .IMG files. The "full" version will allow you to load MacPaint and Degas Elite (uncompressed and compressed) files and save them out to .IMG files. Also, an "Undo" function is implemented in the full version. The full version is available from me for $25. My address is at the end of this document. "Full version" is a misnomer. You may find the keycommands to a little harder to use than drop down menus. Also, the tools are somewhat primative (but a damn sight better than Super Charger) and more powerful tools may be needed. This will not be the final version of Image Editor DA. The next version will have dialog boxes and pattern menus and some additional tools but I do not expect to finish it before the 1st of March. It is likely that the next version will be a commercial product that will sell in the neighborhood of $40. However, anyone who buys this now will be entitled all versions of the DA up to and including the first commercial release for a nominal cost (i.e.: send me the original disk plus return postage). This offer expires 31 January 89. Questions and comments can be sent to me at the address below or you contact me through the San Diego Atari Computer Enthusiasts (SDACE) BBS at (619) 284-3821.
