New stuff is coming out left and right. Check out the utterly excellent Vroom by Lankhor; it's simply the best Formula 1 racing game I have ever seen on any machine, computer or console! Heck, it's better than some coin-ops! It's listed under UBI Soft (UK/FR). I was hoping to attend COMDEX this month, but those plans have been dashed to the ground. However, I'm definitely gunning for Winter CES in Las Vegas! The "Top Ten UK Games" chart has been modified somewhat. It's now the "Top Twenty UK Games" chart. The numbers and symbols inside the parentheses provide some additional info about the games: (*) if it's new, (RE) if it's returning to the chart, and (number) shows last month's position. Don't panic if you see a number higher than 20 in there, it's because my source chart lists the top 30 games. (But the top 20 are the most interesting!). If you really want to see the top 30 games, tell me so at the usual BBSs. As if that wasn't enough, I spent 3 hours alphabetizing all the game titles in the Guide itself. It's now even easier to find a specific game! Errata: the Magnetic Scrolls Compilation Pack was not released in August. It's scheduled for November '91. Also, Pool Of Radiance was never officially released here or in the UK. Happy Halloween, and see y'all in 31! -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Z Gaming News: -------------- New This Month: --------------- Domestic: --------- Are you kidding? Mindcraft's PR told me that if enough people write or call in, they would do an ST conversion. So, here's their address and phone number: Mindcraft, 2341 205th Street, Suite 102, Torrance, CA, 90501, (213) 320-5215. Mindcraft distributes all Omnitrend products, and is in turn distributed by Electronic Arts (who won't distribute ST software). ST Thrown Out Of The Arena! --------------------------- Spectrum Holobyte's new division, Arena Entertainment, will not carry any ST titles after all. Arena will be releasing US versions of various Mirrorsoft products, including Cadaver (Bitmap Brothers), Reach For The Skies (Rowan Software), and Red Phoenix (based on the Larry Bond novel). Cadaver already came and went, and a scenario disk was recently released by Renegade (the Bitmap Brothers' new hangout). Reach For The Skies also goes under the name of Battle Of Britain Jubilee and has not been released anywhere as of yet. With Flight Of The Intruder taking so long, Rowan's other projects were bound to be affected. No release date yet. As for Red Phoenix, it's way too early to tell. Looks like it's back to the import rack... The SSI Position: ----------------- SSI US will not be designing anything for the ST. They will simply distribute US Gold creations in the US, like the upcoming Shadow Sorcerer. Licensing Hit List: ------------------- Ocean snaps up yet another movie license. This time, it's the upcoming Hook. It's a sort of big budget remake of Peter Pan with Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook and Robin Williams is in there somewhere. A small glossary of game description terms: ------------------------------------------- --Adventure simulation: a graphic adventure where the environment is simulated with 3D polygons and/or sprites, and you move inside it. Examples: Damocles, Infestation, Corporation, Interphase, Castle Master, Cybercon III, etc... --Beat'em'up: legs-flyin' karate-choppin' two-fisted action-packed action! --CRPG: computer role-playing game. People have been arguing over this term for years! Some people believe there's no such thing and that all CRPGs are nothing but graphic adventures. They are usually the ones who play real RPGs. But since everybody uses the term anyway, I have to comply. --Graphic adventure: any adventure that doesn't use a command line as its sole interface. Examples: quite a lot of stuff really (Sierra, Lucasfilm, ICOM...). --Hack'n'slash: razor-sharp double-edged slice'n'dice fun! --Platform: jumpin'/climbin'/runnin'/slidin' action. --Puzzler: what you play when you want to use your brain, for a change... --Shoot'em'up: if it moves, shoot it. If it don't move, shoot it anyway. Usually combined with another game type. --Text adventure: any adventure that uses a command line as its only interface, even if it has pretty pictures (The Pawn, all Infocom games except Battletech). --Wargame: move your armies around. Mouse-driven or text-driven. --Perspective: sideview, overhead view, cockpit view (1st person), chase-view (viewed from a camera following your vehicle), isometric (three-quarters). --Scrolling: sideview scrolling (left and/or right), vertical (up and/or down), omni-scrolling (all directions), flick-scrolling (jump-scrolls from one screen to the next), non-scrolling (it just sits there). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have any questions, comments, criticisms or suggestions, you can contact Zenobot at the O'Mayer V BBS (213-732-0229, 1200/2400/9600), the Jungle BBS (213-254-9534, 2400/9600), or on GEnie (ABITTON1). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This publication or portions of this publication may not be edited in any way without prior written permission.
