I'm shocked. Just 3 month ago, they were saying they were dropping US ST support. But wait a minute, the warranty registration card inside SSII has the UK address on it! Hmmm, talk about mixed messages... They have yet to return my calls. More next month. Bullfrog Makes The Jump (groan): -------------------------------- The makers of Populous have decided to become their own publisher. There will be 2 more games released by Electronic Arts UK, Populous II, and an upcoming design called B.O.B. (working title), then all other titles will be released by Bullfrog Productions UK. This Cyberstudio Doesn't Run On STs! ------------------------------------ Spectrum Holobyte has started a new division, called Cyberstudio, that is dedicated to developing software for the Virtuality entertainment system. Virtuality is the first coin-op system to use virtual reality as a game environment. Designed and manufactured by W Industries in England, the system was unveiled there 6 month ago, and is set to make its US debut at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions' annual convention in Orlando, FL, November 13th through 16th. The system will also be demonstrated during a brief road show with stops in Dallas, Los Angeles and the SF Bay Area. The system consists of a custom computer running the special Virtuality operating system, a helmet (called a "Visette") equiped with twin color LCD monitors (one for each eye) and quad audio speakers (for true 3D sound imaging). Wearing the Visette is like being dropped inside a 3D polygons game like Castle Master or Starglider II, except that you can look around just by moving your head in any direction, since the Visette is equiped with motion sensors. Most games are played from a large molded plastic seat with twin joysticks, or a steering wheel. For stand-up games, the player must strap on a backpack and use a joystick, a setup that makes him/her look like a Robot Rocketeer. It's not known when Virtuality will hit the US arcades, but when it does, watch out!!!! Licensing Hit List: ------------------- Ocean strikes again, but this time they've snapped up the whole World Wrestling Federation! The game will be called Wrestlemania, no release date yet. A small glossary of game description terms: ------------------------------------------- --Adventure simulation: a graphic adventure where the environment is simulated with 3D polygons and/or sprites, and you move inside it. Examples: Damocles, Infestation, Corporation, Interphase, Castle Master, Cybercon III, etc... --Beat'em'up: legs-flyin' karate-choppin' two-fisted action-packed action! --CRPG: computer role-playing game. People have been arguing over this term for years! Some people believe there's no such thing and that all CRPGs are nothing but graphic adventures. They are usually the ones who play real RPGs. But since everybody uses the term anyway, I have to comply. --Graphic adventure: any adventure that doesn't use a command line as its sole interface. Examples: quite a lot of stuff really (Sierra, Lucasfilm, ICOM...). --Hack'n'slash: razor-sharp double-edged slice'n'dice fun! --Platform: jumpin'/climbin'/runnin'/slidin' action. --Puzzler: what you play when you want to use your brain, for a change... --Shoot'em'up: if it moves, shoot it. If it don't move, shoot it anyway. Usually combined with another game type. --Text adventure: any adventure that uses a command line as its only interface, even if it has pretty pictures (The Pawn, all Infocom games except Battletech). --Wargame: move your armies around. Mouse-driven or text-driven. --Perspective: sideview, overhead view, cockpit view (1st person), chase-view (viewed from a camera following your vehicle), isometric (three-quarters). --Scrolling: sideview scrolling (left and/or right), vertical (up and/or down), omni-scrolling (all directions), flick-scrolling (jump-scrolls from one screen to the next), non-scrolling (it just sits there). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have any questions, comments, criticisms or suggestions, you can contact Zenobot on GEnie (ABITTON1) in the ST RoundTable, Category 9 (Games), Topic 22 (Zen-ST).
