Interesting. Not a pleasant experience for ST users. Hog heaven for video game fans though... My next trip will be to the next Vegas COMDEX in December. Errata: Blue Max was released by Mindscape International (UK), not 360 (US). 360 products are now being distributed by Electronic Arts US and UK. Blue Max for the ST was a left-over from the Mindscape contract. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ST Gaming News: --------------- New This Month: --------------- Domestic: --------- --Disciples Of Steel (MegaSoft Entertainment). --Vengeance Of Excalibur (Virgin). [ (*) = new item, (RE) = re-entry, (#) = last month's position.] Big Wonderful Winter CES Report... NOT!!!!!: -------------------------------------------------------------- This was NOT the show to go to if you are into STs! Nevertheless, I did meet some interesting people, including Peter Molyneux of Bullfrog (with Populous II just released), Martin Kenwright who IS Digital Image Design (look for Robocop 3 and Epic), Adrian Stephens of The Assembly Line (of E-Motion/Pipedream/Interphase fame), and the man who created Midimaze who was there to push his Faceball 2000, a modified Midimaze for consoles. This one might even make it to the Lynx! Speaking of the Lynx, Atari didn't have a booth. They had some reps at the Telegames booth, since that company makes Lynx games, and a suite at the Rio, but no Atari booth. None. Zilch. Zip. Nada... I mean, Commodore was here and they were showing CDTVs and Amigas! What's the deal here? CES not big enough? Are they really pushing the business angle by skimping on CES and gunning for COMDEX, CEPS, NAMM, and Seybold? I guess soooo... Anyway, here's a few tidbits I've been able to gather: --UBI-Soft US will no longer distribute any ST software in the US. It turns out that all the main US distributors buy straight from Europe anyway. --Electronic Arts UK wil NOT be releasing the following games for the ST: Indianapolis 500, Centurion: Defender Of Rome, and Starflight 2: Trade Routes Of The Cloud Nebula. EA UK now distributes 360 products, but there aren't any ST versions planned, so no Harpoon. --Lucasfilm has essentially dropped the ST. --SSI has done the same. The ST is not even listed on their 1992 catalog! We might see a few SSI conversions from US Gold (UK), but that's it. --Codemasters, those wacky British "Budget-Game Kings Of The Universe", are now assaulting Nintendo machines, thanks to Camerica. That's not a whole lot of news, hey? That's the ST in the US for you... Spectrum Keeps Busy ------------------- In addition to the Cyberstudio Virtuality project, Spectrum Holobyte has signed up to be a Nintendo developer. They will be concentrating on the Gameboy and the SNES at first, and they are working on Falcon (SNES) and Wordtris (SNES and Gameboy). They have also signed a contract with Paramount to make Star Trek: The Next Generation games for the SNES, the upcoming Nintendo CD-ROM, the MS/DOS and Apple platforms, and the Phillips CDI. (No CDTV, ST, or Amiga? Weird...) Meanwhile, Microprose UK now distributes Spectrum Holobyte products in Europe. As to what this means for ST users, I have no idea. We'll just have to wait and see. "Make Mine Mono" Update: ------------------------ Here's a bunch of recent titles that support both color and monochrome: --Boston Bomb Club (Palace/Silmarils). --The Secret Of Monkey Island (Lucasfilm). --Wonderland and the Magnetic Scrolls Collection (Virgin/Magnetic Scrolls). --5 Intelligent Strategy Games pack and Backgammon Royale (Oxford Softworks). And here's everything else: (in no particular order) --Everything by Infocom (except Battletech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception). --Starglider, Tracker, and Universal Military Simulator (Rainbird). --Starglider 2 (Rainbird), only game disk that works with both STs and Amigas. --Pro Flight (Hi-Soft), the exhaustive Panavia Tornado simulator. --Scrabble (Virgin/Leisure Genius). --Flight Simulator II and Jet (Sublogic). --Empire (Interstel) and Imperium (Electronic Arts). --Club Backgammon (California Dreams). --Shangai (Activision). --Ogre (Origin). --Midimaze (Hybrid Arts). --Eight Ball (Michtron). --Chessmaster 2000 and Software Golden Oldies (Software Toolworks). --Missile Command, Robotron 2084, and Crystal Castles (Atari US). --Bridge Master (Atari UK). --Black Gold aka Oil Imperium (Electronic Zoo/reLine). --Scapeghost (Level 9). And the following Sierra games: all Space Quest, Police Quest, King's Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry games; Manhunter New York, Manhunter San Francisco, Colonel's Bequest, Conquests Of Camelot, and Quest For Glory I. If you have a game that works in monochrome and is not listed here, I want to know! Drop me a line at the usual places. A small glossary of game description terms: ------------------------------------------- --Adventure simulation: a graphic adventure where the environment is simulated with 3D polygons and/or sprites, and you move inside it. Examples: Damocles, Infestation, Corporation, Interphase, Castle Master, Cybercon III, etc... --Beat'em'up: legs-flyin' karate-choppin' two-fisted action-packed action! --CRPG: computer role-playing game. People have been arguing over this term for years! Some people believe there's no such thing and that all CRPGs are nothing but graphic adventures. They are usually the ones who play real RPGs. But since everybody uses the term anyway, I have to comply. --Graphic adventure: any adventure that doesn't use a command line as its sole interface. Examples: quite a lot of stuff really (Sierra, Lucasfilm, ICOM...). --Hack'n'slash: razor-sharp double-edged slice'n'dice fun! --Platform: jumpin'/climbin'/runnin'/slidin' action. --Puzzler: what you play when you want to use your brain, for a change... --Shoot'em'up: if it moves, shoot it. If it don't move, shoot it anyway. Usually combined with another game type. --Text adventure: any adventure that uses a command line as its only interface, even if it has pretty pictures (The Pawn, all Infocom games except Battletech). --Wargame: move your armies around. Mouse-driven or text-driven. --Perspective: sideview, overhead view, cockpit view (1st person), chase-view (viewed from a camera following your vehicle), isometric (three-quarters). --Scrolling: sideview scrolling (left and/or right), vertical (up and/or down), omni-scrolling (all directions), flick-scrolling (jump-scrolls from one screen to the next), non-scrolling (it just sits there). --DS only: shipped on double-sided disks. Single-sided disks can usually be ordered from the company with a coupon included in the packaging. --1 meg: one megabyte or more required. --1 meg enhanced: it works with 512K, but you get a few extras with 1 meg. --STE enhanced: uses the advanced STE features. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have any questions, comments, criticisms or suggestions, you can contact Zenobot on GEnie (ABITTON1) in the ST RoundTable, Category 9 (Games), Topic 22 (ST Gaming Digest).
