The DungeonMaster's Workbench by Tyson Gill General All rules are taken from the 2nd Edition Player's Handbook and DM's Guide where applicable. Some 1st edition rules such as Assassins, Monks, and Illusionists, as separate classes are retained for those still using them. Psionics have been added as a separate class. Any of these can simply be excluded from the general population distribution if you do not wish to include them in your campaign. The Program To run, just execute DANDY.TOS on Atari ST systems or DANDY.EXE for MS-DOS systems and select from the options at the bottom of the screen with single keypresses. The Party Screen This main screen shows you the entire party of up to 20 characters. You can move the character selector arrow --> using the up and down arrow keys. The player with the --> pointing at him/her is the current player. P)layer Press P to go to the player screen described in the next section. The player screen allows you to view detailed information on the current character or create new ones. C)ritical I added my own critical table for sadistic DM's. What I do is roll a second 20-sided on a natural 'to hit' of 20. If the percentile rolled is GREATER THEN the roll needed to hit, I press the C key to see what critical damage has been inflicted. For example, if the character needed a 15 to hit and rolled a 20, he needs a 16 or greater on the second roll to inflict a critical hit. Obviously, if the character needs a 20 to hit he cannot ever inflict a critical. When you press 'C' a random critical will be described along with the damaged done and the cure required. D)ismiss This toggles an asterisk before the characters name. When saving the party file any players with an asterisk will not be saved. O)utput This makes a full printout of the currently selected --> character. On MS-DOS machines, the printer is expected on LPT0 and no handshaking is checked. F)ile Options to save or load party or setup files. Q)uit Exit the program after saving current party and setup files. The Setup File The setup file contains all program settings including population distributions and the last party name. The computer dice roll settings are also stored for in the setup file. The Party Files The party files contain specs for up to twenty characters. You can have as many parties as you wish. The Player Screen This screen displays detailed information about one character. A ** before the character's class indicates that this particular character meets all of the required prime attribute ratings for that class and typically qualifies for a 10% experience point bonus. Class, Race, and Level are self-explanatory. The x.p. is the minimum experience points for that level. It can be edited as players gain more experience. When it reached the next cutoff the player's level and skills will be automatically increased. Use the E)dit option. The THAC0 is the To Hit Armor Class 0 rating. Strength bonuses to hit, if applicable, will appear in parentheses after the THAC0. Be sure to add additional modifiers such as weapon, surprise, conditions, etc. The titles are taken automatically from the 1st Edition where applicable. These can be edited if desired. Use the E)dit option. The attribute levels are self-explanatory. The hit pts status indicates the maximum and current numbers. The current number can be edited using the E)dit option. Any exceptional strength percentile for warriors with 18 strength will appear in perentheses after the base strength. The modifiers on the right side are the Damage Adjustment for strength and the Reaction Adjustment, Missile Attack Adjustment, and Defensive Adjustment for dexterity. Listed below the character attributes are spell levels known to Priest, Ranger, Paladin, Bard, Mage, etc characters. These maximum spell ratings are automatically adjusted for intelligence and level. D)istribution This workscreen allows you to set the probability of finding characters by class, race, and level. You can set up it up to reflect the natural population distribution for a particular area and same as many set up files as you like for different regions. I)nfo Pressing 'I' displays additional information about the current character. This includes special abilities due to the character's class and race. Where applicable, abilities are automatically adjusted for the character's level and attributes. This section includes thieving abilities for rogues and attack/damage/special abilities for monk characters. Thieving abilities are automatically adjusted for level, class, race, and dexterity. E)dit The edit option allows you to modify the character's attributes, experience, current hit points, name, etc. N)otes Pressing the 'N' key brings up a listing of 40 lines of free from information that you can view or edit relating to the current character. Here you can record the character's possessions, quirks, encounters, etc. J)oin This option adds the current character to the party list. You will be prompted to enter the character's name. P)arty Return to the party display. Any other key creates a new random character according to the distribution you specified. All class attribute minimums, level and race restrictions, and restrictions are adhered to. Bonuses for class, attributes and race are computed. Hit points are computed correctly with constitution bonuses. Special skills, abilities, and spell capabilities are computed taking into account race, attributes, and level. Computer dice roller Press shift-Function Key to set any of the ten different dice rolls. You will be prompted to enter the die type, the number of rolls, the bonus per roll, and a minimum total. By pressing the corresponding function key thereafter that roll will be displayed in the upper right hand portion of the screen. The rolls are stored in the setup file. Some mechanism for moving characters between parties. I would welcome your suggestions as to the best way for the user to control this... 2. An actual distribution levels rather then just a linear range. 3. Expanded info. Other things you would like to see? 4. Multi-class characters. 5. Implement the suggestions of registered users!
