No longer will you have to rummage around looking for a calculator to calculate your weekly totals and average or wait until the end of the year for your league secretary to provide you with a summary of your year of bowling statistics. The Bowling Statistician provides the capability of recording data from many different leagues over the same season or different seasons for a single person. This feat can be duplicated for several different people like members of the same team as long as you don't run out of storage on your disk. PAGE 4 The Bowling Statistics Owner's Manual There is no storage provided in Bowling Statistician program for team or league statistics. There is a program available for that function called The Bowling Secretary. See section 14 for a description of that program. The Bowling Statistician program is programmed in a data base language called dBASE III developed by Aston-Tate. It was developed for the Atari ST to operate using the dBASE III look alike, dbMAN developed by VersaSoft Corp. The Bowling Statistician program has been ported across to operate on most IBM PC look alikes also using dbMAN. Enough of this! By this time you are ready to get started using the program. There are four courses open to you. If you are a knowledgeable ST user and understand how to format disks, copy disks, use menus, then jump right in. Make a copy of the program disk and work with the copy just to be safe. If on the other hand you understand the ST computer operations, but would like to go through a tutorial on the program, then again make a copy of the program disk and proceed to section 15 of this manual for a program tutorial. For those of you that are still reading I would suggest that you continue reading straight on through this document. You will learn all of the details behind each action used in the tutorial when reading section 4 through 13 which cover all menu selections used in the Bowling Statistician program. Closing I would like to mention section 14. This section is provided to entice you (if you are a league secretary) into looking into The Bowling Secretary program. 2. Equipment Required Bowling Statistician requires the following equipment as a minimum: a. Atari 520 ST with 512K of memory and TOS in ROM. b. A single sided double density disk drive. c. Either kind of standard monitor. (Color monitor using medium resolution or a monocrome monitor) The program will operate with an Atari 1040 ST, double sided double density disk drive, 5-1/2 inch disk drive (although the amount of data which can be stored is very limited), and a hard disk. PAGE 5 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual 3. Getting Started This section usually provides instructions which are already included in the system manual thay comes with your computer. I will not try to duplicate these instructions. I will say that the Bowling Statistician Program will work with the minimum Atari 520 ST system sold with the operating system installed in ROM and not read in from floppy disk as it was when the computer was first released. The minimum requirements are given in section 2. The first thing you must do to start using the program is to make a copy of the disk to use. This will allow you to put the master away in a safe place to bring out and use in case anything happens to the copy you are working on. Make this copy on whatever media you are going to use for your system (single sided disk, double sided disk, or on hard disk). If you are not going to run the tutorial, then you do not need to copy the following files: TEST.DBF, TEST.DFX, TEST1.DBF, and TEST1.DFX. There are two ways to start the Bowling Statistician program. The first is to double click the left mouse button on the correct disk icon (for instance the disk A icon) to open the floppy disk directory. Then double click the left mouse button on the DBEXE.TTP icon. This will open a TOS take parameter box where you will enter "BOWLSTAT" (no quote marks please) followed by a RETURN. This will, after a few seconds, make the dbMAN credit screen appear. Press return when you are ready to proceed and the Bowling Statistician Main Menu will appear. Continue your exploration of the program by proceeding to section 4 (Main Menu selection descriptions) or section 15 (the tutorial). The second method is the way I recommend. After you have opened the correct floppy disk directory as described previously, single click on the DBEXE.TTP icon. Drag down the Options menu from the top of desk top screen and single click the left mouse button on the install application selection. A selection box will appear on the screen. Enter "RUN" for the Document type and then click the left mouse button on the OK box. Drag down the Options menu from the top of desk top screen and single click the left mouse button on the Save Desktop option. A selection box will appear on the screen. Click the left mouse button on the OK box. This action will save your selections to your disk so that the next time you startup your system using this disk all you will have to do to run Bowlstat is to double click the left mouse button on the Bowlstat icon and the program will run. The program operation is exactly the same as described before. PAGE 6 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual 4. Storing Your Own Bowling Data To have the most benefit from this program you must collect a certain amount of data for each person the information is being recorded for. This information includes for the first time the following: a. League name b. Season (example: 1986-1987) c. Bowler's name d. The number of games bowled each night (either 3 or 4) The following information is needed for each time weekly bowling data is entered: a. Date bowled (example: 1/28/87) b. Alley lanes bowled on (example: 3-4) c. The number of games won d. Score for each game as prompted (example: 162) 5. Main Menu The main menu allows selection of the various functions. It is shown in figure 1. There are nine options selections available. They are selected by entering a number (1-9) followed by pressing the RETURN key on the key board. The selections perform as follows: 1 - Quit The Program How you leave the Bowling Statistician. No matter what menu in the program you are in, this selection will return you to the previous menu or exit the program as in this case. 2 - About Bowling Statistician Program Display tells the program designer information. 3 - Select Data to Use Allow selection of which bowling data records the Bowling Statistician program is to use for the current session. Edit League or Scoring Data Selection of this option doesn't take you right to where the action is like most of the other selections. It takes you to a second menu which is displayed in figure 6. The selections on this menu are self explainatory. Selecting one (1) allows return to the main menu. Two (2) selects league data to edit and three (3) selects the weekly scoring data to edit. Selecting two (2) will cause the program to prompt you to enter the league number for the league data to edit as shown in figure 7. Use the league list you have generated and have discovered something you want to charge to find the correct number and then enter it. This will cause the program to find the data and display it for you to edit as you choose. The data will be displayed as shown in the example shown in figure 3. Use your arrow keys to move up, down, or across to the point where you want to do your editing. To delete characters the backspace key deletes the character behind the cursor while the delete key deletes the character under the cursor. When you have finished your edit, hold down the control key and press the s key. This will return you to the Edit Data menu (figure 6) where you can make another selection. Future Products The Bowling Statistician Program is the by-product of a program which will be released in December 1987. The next program to be released will be The Bowling Secretary. The Bowling Secretary is a program which allows a person to keep track of several different leagues no matter what kind of leagues they are. It is able to handle traveling leagues, handycap leagues, along with scratch leagues. It automatically calculates averages, produces team handycap reports, and the weekly league summary report. Reports for the end of the season are available for individuals, teams, and for leagues. It greatly reduces the league secretary work load. This program too will be released as Shareware. Look for it on wout favorite board or send the registration fee for the program of forty dollars. You will get for the fee the full version of the program, a hard copy of the program, all updates of the program, and notices of new PAGE 18 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual releases. 15. Tutorial The intention of this tutorial is to cover the use and operation of the Bowling Statistician program (or Bowling Stats as it is sometimes refered to), not to teach you how to setup and operate your computer. Instructions for these actions are provided in your computer operator manual. The first thing you must do to start using the porgram is to make a copy of the disk to use. Open the disk directory by double clicking on the correct disk icon. Then double click on the DBEXE.TTP icon. This will open a TOS take parameter box where you will enter "BOWLSTAT" (no quote marks please) followed by a RETURN. This will. after a few seconds, make a dbMAN credit screen appear. Press RETURN when you are ready to proceed and the Bowling Stats Main Menu will appear (See figure 1). To have the most benifit from this program you must collect a certain amount of data for each person the information is being recorded for. The number of games won PAGE 19 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual d. Score for each game as prompted] (example: 162) Select item 3 from the Main Menu. The Select Data Menu (figure 3) will be displayed. Note that item 1 on the menu is the Return to the Main Menu selection. This is always true on any menu in the Bowling Stats program. For the present we will skip the next two options on the menu and select option 4, Change League data file name. Answer the prompt that appears by entering "TEST" followed by a RETURN (Note: RETURN will be uesd throught this document to represent pressing the Return key on the key board as a terminator character). The Select Data Menu will be redisplayed with the league name changed from "LEAGUE" to "TEST". Select item 5 from the menu. Answer the prompt that appears by entering TEST1 RETURN. The Select Data Menu will be re-displayed with the Score data file name changed from "SCORE" to "TEST1". What you have just done is to select a set of files which were supplied with the program in which a set of data has already been entered. Now return to the Main Menu by selecting option 1. Make sure your printer is setup and has a supply of paper. Select option 9 from the Main Menu and a League report (see figure 15) of the recorded data will be produced. After the printout is complete, the Main Menu will be re-displayed. Select option 8 from the menu produce a Personal Scoring report (see figure 14). Now its time to learn how to enter new data. First lets add a set of league data. Select option 5 from the menu by entering 5 RETURN. The Add League Data Display (figure 5) will be displayed on the screen. The normal editing functions are now in effect. These functions are that the arrow keys can be used to move the cursor around the screen, the BACKSPACE key will delete the character to the left of the cursor, and the DELETE key will delete the character under the cursor. The program supplies the league number which will be associated with the data you are about to enter. A series of prompts will be supplied, each expecting a response on your part. The first prompt is for the league name. This is entered as a character string with the maximum character count of thirty. Don't worry if you exceed the character count, the program will only accept the first thirty and throw away the rest. The second prompt is for the current season. Enter the season using the "XXXX-YYYY" format. For example, enter 1986-1987 as your entry followed by RETURN. The next prompt is for the number of games bowled on a league night. This entry will be either 3 or 4 and for this example enter 3 followed by a RETURN. The next two prompts are for the bowlers first and last name. Enter your name here. The last prompt for this screen allows you to loop through the prompts again to enter another set of league PAGE 20 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual data. As you can see from the kind of data entered, you are concerned about who the bowler is and other unique identifying information. Enter N followed by a RETURN for this prompt. This will return you to the Main Menu again. Now lets add a set of weekly scoring data for the bowler described in the currently selected league. Which league is that you ask? It is very simple to find out. Select option 3 from the menu and the Select Data Files to Use Menu will be displayed. The second option on this display is for the current league number (which is 1). Useing the data you printed out for the League Report (figure 15), see who the bowler, league name, and season are for the league number. Now you know and when you are through, select option 1 to return to the Main Menu. Now select option 4 from the Main Menu to enter a set of scoring data. Another series of prompts are displayed which you must again respond to. The prompts and some sample responses are shown in figure 4. The first prompt is for the date. It is in the form of month/day/year, where the month is a two digit number (01-12), day is a two digit number (01-31), and the year is a two digit number (00-99). These numbers can be entered either with the leading zeros (for example 01) when required or without them (example: 1). Enter 1/1/90 followed by a RETURN. The next request is for the lane bowled on. The data is entered in the form "XX-YY". Now enter 23-24 followed by a RETURN. The third entry is considered by some the most important entry, how many games were won. Enter 3 followed by a RETURN. The last three entries are for the score bowled in each game. Notice the program will only ask for three games here instead of four. The reason is that will be the number of games specified in the league data. If the league data should be four games. then 4 would be entered here. Enter the following scores, each followed by a RETURN: 175, 195, and 145. After the last score has been entered, the program will return to the Main Menu. Print out the Personal Report by selecting option 8 from the Main Menu. Notice the data you have just entered is included in the correct location, with all the data sorted by the date bowled. After the report has been printed the Main Menu is displayed again. Let us now suppose that some piece of league and scoring data has been entered wrong. First lets edit the scoring data by selecting option 6 from the menu. The Edit Data Menu (figure 6) will be displayed on the screen. Selecting option 3 from this menu will cause the program to prompt for you to enter the date for the data to be edited. Enter 01/01/90 followed by a RETURN. Note that the leading zeros MUST be included in the date or the program will bomb because it will not be able to find your date. The data that is stored for the entered date will now be displayed on the screen. PAGE 21 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual You can use your arrow keys to move up, down, or side ways on the screen. The BACKSPACE key is used to delete the character to the left of the cursor while the DELETE key will delete the character under the cursor. Arrow down to the GAME_3 display and change the value to 165. Now arrow down to XTOTAL and change the total value from 515 to 535. After that has been completed, hold down the control kay and press the S key. This will store the changed data and return you to the Edit Data Menu. The following is a list of the meanings of the data names displayed: LEAGUE_NO - The number of the league LEAGUE_NAM - The name of the league HI_10 - The season high single game score HI_30 - THe season high series score LO_10 - The season low single game score LO_30 - The season low series score CUR_DATE - The date of the last entered set of bowling scoring data NO_GAME - The number of games bowled in league play per session BOWL_FNAME - The bowler's first name BOWL_LNAME - The bowler's last name Any of the entries can be edited, but it isnot wise to PAGE 22 The Bowling Statistician Owner's Manual edit the numeric data HI_10, HI_30, LO_10, LO_30, NO_GAME, or LEAGUE_NO). The editing could have a weird effect. If you changed the NO_GAME for instances from 3 to 4, the next time you entered data and then printed it out, the average would be calculated wrong along with the win percentage. With that in mind, lets change the league name (LEAGUE_NAM) from what it is to something else and then hold down the control key and press the S key to save the data. When the data is saved, the program will redisplay the Edit Data Menu. Select option 1 to return to the main menu and then print out the League Report by selecting option 9. After the printout is complete you will see that the name was changed to what you entered. The last selection from the Main Menu that we haven't explored is the Delete Score or League Data option. Select option 7 and the Delete Data Menu (figure 11) will be displayed. Lets delete the league data that you entered by selecting option 2. The program will prompt you for the league number of the data to be deleted. Use your League Report and enter the league number followed by a RETURN. After the data has been deleted, the program will re-display the Delete Data Menu. To delwete a set of scoring data, select option 3. The program will prompt for the date of the scoring data to be deleted. Enter the date for the data you entered earlier (01/01/90). Note again that the leading zeros must be used. After the data has been deleted, the program will display the Delete Data Menu again. Select option 1 to return to the Main Menu. Now print out a new Personal Scoring Report and Leagfue Report. You will see that the data deleted has disappeared from the report. Thats about all there is to operating this program. Have fun with it and good bowling! PAGE 23
