After the title screen and credits appear you will see the main battle screen. ITEM IDENTIFICATION: The first thing you have to do is learn what each item on the main battle screen means. The large blue square in the upper left hand corner of the screen is where the five ships will be displayed and will also display the hits or misses fired on your opponent. The line just below this box is called the Computer Line. This is the computer's display line. When the computer tells you something, such as "WE HAVE BEEN HIT" or perhaps "THEIR SHIP IS SUNK", it will be displayed on this line. Pay close attention to it. The line just under that line is called the Text Line. This is where the phone number for the game to call will be displayed, or the incoming or outgoing message will be displayed. The five ship slots are used when deploying ships at the beginning of the game and ship status for your ships as well as your opponants ships afterwards. The two arrow buttons are used to tell the computer IN which direction to orient the ships during deployment. The Radio Button is used to send a message to your opponent during game play. The hit and miss symbols are there only to show you the difference. You are now ready to deploy your fleet. DEPLOYING YOUR FLEET: First choose your ship coordinate. This is the coordinate that the beginning of the ship will be at. Move the mouse pointer to this location and press the left mouse button. Now go over to the five ships and choose which ship you would like to deploy. Now go over to the two arrows and choose the direction of the ship. Do this for all five ships. At this point the word "WAITING" will appear in the computer line and three boxes on the text line of the screen labeled "CALL", "QUIT", & "PLAY". With the mouse pointer you may choose one of these options. If no options are chosen the computer will continue to wait for its modem to answer the phone when another player with the same program tells his/her system to call yours. QUIT OPTION: Choosing the "QUIT" option will end the game and go back to the desktop. CALL OPTION: Choosing the "CALL" option will allow you to enter a phone number for the computer to call. There must be a person with the same game running in their computer standing idle in the waiting mode. Also make sure that you type the proper Call Waiting Disable codes, followed by a comma, if you have Call Waiting. After the call is placed, if the program answers on the other end, the Computer Line will display that it is scanning for ships, followed by a detection of enemy ships and finally that it has detected five ships within range. You may now begin game play. PLAY OPTION: Choosing this option will allow the user to play against the computer. This mode is the same as playing an opponent however the computer will lay out its own fleet and calculate its own moves. BEGINNING GAME PLAY: If you have placed the phone call or chosen the "PLAY" option you will be shown a blank target screen which will show your previous shot results and you will be asked to choose a target coordinate. This is the spot at which you would like to fire your shot. You may only fire when the crosshair is a yellowish color. Fire your shot and hope for the best. After your shot is fired and the computer tells you whether it was a hit or a miss you will be shown your fleet layout screen and your opponent will be allowed to choose his/her shot. This will be the same whether it is the computer opponent or a human opponent. Continue this until one of the players has sunk all of his/her opponents ships. SENDING A MESSAGE: When it is your turn to choose a target coordinate and fire a shot you may move the mouse pointer over to the radio button and send your opponent a message. Press the left mouse button with the arrow on the radio button and a computer message will appear telling you to enter your message. You may type up to 30 characters. When finished just hit the "RETURN" key and the message will be sent. If the message you send is "SURRENDER" the game will immediatley come to an end. You may only send messages to a human opponent. FINISHING THE GAME: After one of the players has no ships left the game is over. You will now see two boxes in the text line labeled "VIEW", and "QUIT" described below. VIEW OPTION: Choosing this option will toggle between the hit/miss screen and the ship deployment screen. QUIT OPTION: Choosing the "QUIT" option will end the game and go back to the desktop.
