Is there a dichotomy between art and science? Was C.P. Snow correct about the two societies? Can a series of stupid questions lead you into reading the rest of this document? Having recently written a program to mathematically manipulate public domain Calamus Fonts, I wanted to show off the fonts. The program is my Fonts Utility program which can be found on this BBS. The new fonts are visual puns and some of the letters look quite interesting, depending on their ancestry. The program itself does some real work, including bolding, compressing, enlarging, slanting, and rotating of the letters. But I also wanted to have some fun too. The program will take the letters and 'explode' them out from the center of the letter. This gives them a quirky look, very fiftyish and modern. The triangle function can also be called a pin head function. It squeezes the letters at the top forming a letter that strongly emphasizes the serifs that are present. The sphere function maps the letter onto a sphere. Lubalin is normally a staid serifed typewriter font. It is used for legibility and for dull routine work. With these modifications, the font is now exhilarating, electrifying, fun. This example should make you want to order the complete font utility today. You should. You will be very pleased with it and the many fonts that will be produced. You can order the Calamus Font Utility from Fonts by Guber 717 Elkington St. Louis, MO 63132.
