With the introduction of hinted CompuGraphic fonts, the PageStream font management system has a new file. On the Atari ST this file is called FONTEQIV.V2. What this file does is tell PageStream that a certain CompuGraphic (CG) font is the same as a certain PostScript (PS) font. This way you can use your CG fonts to the Atari laser or dot matrix printer, and then use PS fonts when printing to a PostScript printer service, or to a PScript printer or through UltraScript. The FONTEQIV file slows PGS down a bit, and here's why. Each time the program gets a new font, it has to compare that font with the fonts listed in the FONTEQIV file. The more fonts in the FONTEQIV file the longer this comparison takes. Now PageStream ships with only 3 CG fonts: Triumvirate (which is the same as Helvetica), Times and Garamond. So if you don't have any other CG fonts (and I bet 99% of PGS users do not) then you don't need any other fonts listed in the FONTEQIV file. I've edited the FONTEQIV file to include only the 3 CG fonts that we all own, and the speedup is dramatic. Doing a test of a full viewed page of 12 point Times (with greeking off) the page redrew in 18 seconds instead of 29 seconds. In other words, the page with the full FONTEQIV file is about 50% slower than the page with the edited FONTEQIV file. To use the new FONTEQIV file. First, make sure your original FONTEQIV.V2 file is safe on your master PGS disk. Now copy the enclosed FONTEQIV.V2 file from this arc into the PSFONTS folder (or wherever you have installed it on you working copy of PageStream), overwriting the existing file. Now run PageStream. That's it! If you want to you can do some speed tests. I am sure you will appreciate the speedup. --Nevin Shalit Sysop, SoftLogik RT on GEnie (m385;1)
