If DOOM is locking up, there can be many causes depending on where it
locks up.

The first thing to do if DOOM locks up it turn off the machine and boot
clean, either with a system disk containing no config.sys/autoexec.bat
or boot clean by pressing the left shift key or F5 key (DOS 6.xx only).

This will tell you if it is a software driver loaded at boot that is
causing the problem or if it is a possible hardware conflict.

After you boot, start DOOM from DOS. Not a DOS shell, not Windows, not
OS/2.

If when you boot clean, DOOM runs fine, you are loading something
in the config.sys or autoexec.bat that conflicts with DOOM. You should
boot clean when you want to play DOOM.

If DOOM still locks up, you may have a hardware conflict or incorrect
settings in the DOOM setup. The most common hardware conflict is with
the sound card and another device in the system, so we'll start there.

Sound

To check for a conflict, go to the DOOM setup and disable all sound.
If DOOM works fine, then you have a conflict between the sound card
and another device in the system.

To resolve a sound card conflict, make a list of all of the devices
in the system and write down their settings. Compare the settings
with those for the sound card. If you find two devices that share the
same settings (irq, dma, or port address), change one of the devices
to use another setting.
