If you want to use a hex editor, you can do it this way.  This method has 
been tested and works properly too.  This method was done by Ben Lineback

Here's how to fix that bug in E3M9 of Doom 1.666

Rev up your favorite Hex editor and go to offset 26F90E (2,554,126 decimal).
This should be a 06, change it to a 00.

That fixes that bug...

(or if you favorite hex editor doesn't have a go to location feature, search 
for 31 00 00 B0 00 00 00 06 and change the 06 or 00  (this pattern only occurs
once in the DOOM.WAD) (assuming it hasn't already been modified by something 
else...)
