Several months ago, Clay Clatur offered me materials related to
The Links at Spanish Bay, one of the lesser known course on the
famous Monterey Peninsula in California. I agreed to try it and
began work using Jack Nicklaus Unlimited Golf. Given the British
qualities of the course and the somewhat limited capabilities of
the JNUG design program to create a tough playing linkland
course, I stopped working on the course after completing 9 holes.
Both Clay and I agreed that it just wasn't working the way it
could. We decided to wait until the arrival of the Signature
Edition. In the interim, Clay made a trip to California and
videotaped the entire course. He also provided me with
photographs, drawings, a detailed hole by hole description, and
the course yardage book. Howie Maurer sent me a lengthy document
actually written about the course by original designer Robert
Trent Jones Jr. In fact, most of the quotes on the course come
from his ideas of the course. Howie also provided me with a
beautiful, overhead color picture of the entire course. In
addition to these materials I used three books....The Golf
Courses of Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tee Off, and Golf Courses of
the Monterey Peninsula. Obviously, I have never had so much
material for one course. As a result, I have spent many more
hours laboring on this course than any other, trying to create
the true feel and look of this beautiful seaside course.

My project partner, Clay, sent me the following quote for
inclusion in this text file:

"I have played and filmed the Links at Spanish Bay over several
months. Scott's rendition of this unique course is superb and as
accurate as any real JNUG or JNSE course I have seen, and I have
over 120 of them. We both wish that software limitations hadn't
precluded some things we would have liked to do, but they did.
Nevertheless, the accuracy and "feel" of this course is very
real. I was happy to be able to work with Scott and be a small
part of another Chesney original. I hope you enjoy it.

                                      Clay Clatur

Obviously without Clay's tremendous assistance, this course would
not have been possible. He has playtested the course, made
specific corrections, and offered support throughout.

Clearly, the JNSE software does justice to the British type
course in a way that JNUG could not. Still, even though we now
have 240 objects per hole, I still found myself needing more to
really create the true effects of the knarly sand dunes. In
real life, you would not be permitted to hit out of many of the
dune areas, as they are protected. You would lose a stroke.
This is not the case in the JNSE version, so in a sense the
course could play easier here. I developed all the objects and
background. I did not use any scanning equipment, since I have
none. I am still getting acquainted with the design program but
feel pretty satisfied with this first effort. I particularly
feel good about the creation of the marsh and dune grasses.

In reality, the greens at Spanish Bay are often elevated and
undulating. I worked hard from my sources to accurately create
the greens, so I hope not to be accused of making them
unreasonably difficult. If they are, that's because they really
are. The course is beatable without question, as it should be on
a non-windy day when played properly. You can also go sky high.

I am using this text file to copyright this work. I request that
you not alter my work, except for your own use. I politely
request that you not upload an altered version of this course to
any BBS without my permission. While I am not charging a fee for
this course, I am do not authorize it's use by various freeware
companies.

What's next? Well, I begin working on Shattuck. Also, I will be
doing a collaboration with Lee Ritze, and will also begin working
on Kemper Lakes, all while updating some previous JNUG efforts of
mine. Feel free to call or write.
