The Stunts Terrain Editor is an editor program that allows the editing of
Terrain in Stunts .TRK files.
This, the first public release of the Stunts Terrain Editor, has seen many
set-backs. Much of the actual code I originally intended to put in, had to be
removed for compiling because of Quick Basic 4.5. Yep this was done in crummy
old BASIC.
Thoughts of flipping and rotating terrains, overlaying the track on the
terrain, and a helpful directory loader and even mouse support had to be
dumped. Even the program speed was affected. But your all lucky, because the
first test version 1.0 was in text and not graphics, so just be grateful that
it's all very easy to use.

+-----------------------------+ +-----+ Enough of the chit chat, and on to
| | | INFO| how the damn thing works. When the
| | | | actual program is run, it displays a
| | +-----+ nice intro screen. On 286's and such,
| | +-----+ this can take from 10 to 30 seconds in
| | |FUNCT| loading before this is displayed.
| Editor Display | | | Right after this it jumps into the
| | +-----+ editor.
| 30x30 grid | The majority of the display is the
| | +-----+ editor, with 30 by 30 terrain squares.
| | | KEYS| At the top right is file Information
| | | | as such: Filename, Horizon, Cursor
| | | | location, Dragging.
| | | | In the middle right is the Function
+-----------------------------+ +-----+ Keys area. These are Control or Alt of
the highlighted letter for each function. These functions include: Load, Save,
New, Check, Calc, Horizon, Quit Shell, Redraw. These will be explained later.
On the bottom right is the Terrain Keys area. These are the keys used in
accordance with each terrain piece. The layout of these keys was done for ease
of use in making particular terrains.

When starting a Cursor appears in the top left of the Editor Display as a
white box, which is controlled by the cursors, or numeric keypad. Home, End,
PgUp, and PgDown keys act as diagonal keys.
When one simply wants to lay a terrain piece at the current cursor location,
they hit the according key and the piece will appear. This is very simple as
compared to creating tracks in the actual game.
When one wants to duplicate a piece there's the convenient DRAG option.
Simply press the space bar on the piece to drag, and the DRAG ON message will
appear in the Information area. Then simply move the cursor along where the
piece is placed. This useful for creating large lakes and large hills. When
you are finished dragging the current piece, press space bar again to stop the
Drag option.

The functions:
LOAD - alt L or ^L - Load an existing .TRK file
SAVE - alt S or ^S - Save your current .TRK file
NEW - alt N or ^N - Start a new .TRK file without a track
CHECK - alt C or ^C - Check the terrain pieces for errors
CALC - alt A or ^A - Calculate the slopes between the hills and the ground
HORIZON - alt H or ^H - Change the current horizon
QUIT - alt Q or ^Q - Quit from the program
SHELL - alt E or ^E - Shell out to the operating system.
REDRAW - alt W or ^W - Redraw the screen

In detail:
The LOAD option, allows you to load any existing .TRK file. You don't have
to specify the .TRK extension when specifying the filename. If you have made
changes and haven't saved the current track it will ask if you really want to
load another file. If you change your mind during entering the filename in,
just hit escape twice, once to clear, and again to cancel this option.
The SAVE option, lets you save the file you have been working on. It will
automatic check for errors in the terrain when you do this (see CHECK option).
It errors are detected, saving won't continue. Overwriting a file is notified
to the user when a file is already detected there and the option of overwriting
or stopping is asked. You may also cancel from saving by pressing escape twice.
The NEW option is self explanatory. It clears the current screen for a fresh
new terrain, track and horizon.
The CHECK option. Checking a terrain is very necessary. When a terrain isn't
correctly created, and someone tries to play its track, Stunts says there's a
"Terrain mismatch error", and wont use the track because of this. This saves
the time of the Terrain Artist in switching back and forth to get the track
right.
The CALC option. This is very handy for creating hills quickly without
wasting time on the slopes. By just placing hill pieces where every you want,
an then selecting this option, the slopes will be automatically Calculated for
it. Adding and erasing hills can become untidy, and this option asks if
current slopes should be erased first. If someone selects yes to this
question, and has a hill made only of sloped pieces, they'll find it will
disappear, so be careful.
The HORIZON option. Although this option is already in the actual game, this
makes it easier to allow the horizon to meet the needs of the terrain and not
just the scenery.
The QUIT option, is the most simple. It allow you to quit back to the
operating system. If you haven't saved, you are asked if you actually want to
quit.
The SHELL option. Simply allow you to temporally exit to the operating
system. This was put in as a replacement to the directory loader that was cut
out.
The REDRAW option, allows on to redraw the screen when something happens to
the graphics on it. TSR's have being known to do this, and its a hassle to get
around a hole in the picture because of that.
NOTE: The SAVE and LOAD options have Full path capabilities, allowing you to
access and drive and path. Like G:..\..\STUNTS\FILE.TRK
Command Prompt loading has also being included, to allow quick loading of any
file from the Command Line of DOS. The correct use can be obtained by typing
"TERRAIN ?" at the Command Line.
