Hero's Quest - Some Hints
------------
This document file is not a complete solution to the game but deals with more
than 75% of it (thats as far as I've got) and since I've seen no other doc's
on any BBS concerning this game I thought that it might be a good idea to
produce this so, as to enable others to quickly get as far as I have and help
solve it completely.
                        DM'90

Firstly this is not like Sierra's other crop of 3D adventures, it has the
added feature of your character (Hero) having abilities and stats, and hence it
is a good idea to build these up to a high level before you try to do anything
serious in the game, or else you will find the need to restore your game often.
There are three characters, a fighter, a magician, & a thief.
The thief has the ability to pick locks and steal from the old woman's house
(blue house) and that of the sheriff & otto's place (purple house) during the
night if his lock picking ability is good enough, other than this the character
is both weak and difficult to build on, so I suggest you do not pick him if you
whish to seriously complete the game.

The fighter is reasonable and can become quite powerful in a short time, with
the only short comming being that of not being able to open locked items
without a key, but once built up he can always win a fight even with low
stamina.

The magician is the best choice and make sure that you give him at least 5
points for parry as the instructor in the Baron's castle will not teach anyone
who cannot parry at all, and it's good to have some physical fighting ability
until your magic has become stronger.

Initially you should make a half reasonable map of EVERYTHING as I am not going
to give directions to get everywhere, secondly this game cannot be played like
a normal sierra adventure, which means that I can't give a command by command
solution to problems, but these descriptions should still permit you to get
things done.

O.K. having selected the magician and given at least 5 point to the parry stat
and the climbing stat you start the game. (note that to get 5 points on a stat
that was initially 0 you must give up 15)

You wander up to the sheriff and get introduced before starting to wander
around the place in search of fame and fortune.
Go to the guild master's place and check out the quests on the notice board as
this will note the amounts paid upon completion and tell you who you should see
for further information reguarding a quest (don't forget to sign the book).

Also remember to ask everyone you come across lots of questions about
everything as this improves your intelligence stat and gets points.
Now you've seen the quests to be completed you should start to build up your
stats, do this by alternating between the magic tree (erana's peace) and the
castle a large number of times to build up your fighting ability.

Most people would pay 5 silArs and`leep`t`he`nnl ut`ong`s`tg``asteM
an yor lost health points are only partially replenished, instead sleep under
the magic tree and eat it's fruit, as you will be fully restored by morning for
free and will be safe from the creatures of the night & not use any rations.

Each time you go to the castle just type "fight" when you see the weapons
master appear and he will train you for a bit, then go right to the stable and
clean it, not only will you be paid 5 silvers, but your stats will grow.

You should aim for stats at around 50 for strength, parry etc, using the
following keys when being taught by the weapons master :

8 = attack with weapon  2 = parry  4 = doge  6 = doge

                                       (note: two doges are different)

Now it's time to build up your magic abilities, so take your hard earned cash
and go to the magic shop and buy the FETCH spell, the go to the potion makers
cottage and type "cast fetch", if your magic is strong enough the birds nest
will be brought down to you and you can get the missing ring to give to her and
get a nice big reward. (birds nest in tree outside cottage)

If at any time you get a message saying your magic isn't strong enough just
keep trying, as the practice will build it up to a level strong enough to do
what you require. (the same for physical limitations)

Now go back to the magic shop and buy the other spells available.
Practice these spells often and make sure you know what they are for (remember
I said ask people questions!), now go to where the strange flowers spit a seed
into the air and type "cast fetch" and the seed will be brought to you.

Go give the seed to the Hydra and remember to say YES to all her questions,
then take the acorn she drops on the ground.

The Hydra will tell you of a potion to remove spells from people, this you will
need to help the Baron's daughter, the ingredients are:

(1)..flowers - found at the magic tree
(2)..green fur - go to the Meeps and ask for some
(also take the scroll the Meep drops and read it for a good spell)
(3)..flying water - the waterfall next to the hermit's home
(4)..fairy dust - the fairy will appear at night in the ring of mushrooms,
and say YES when asked if you can dance, when finished ask for fairy
dust. (you will need empty flasks for the water and dust to carry them)

Take these to the potion maker and she will make it for you free of charge.
By now (hopefully! your magic flame dart will have a skill level of at least
60 points and your fighting will also be around that because you're goning to
need 'em that high to beat the KOBOLD magician).

Go to where the ORC marches around with a chest under his arm and kill him,
open the chest with the open spell take the money and enter the cave.

Don't hurt the bear as this is the Baron's son under a spell, don't pour any
potion on him, but "feed bear" then you can walk past safely.

As soon as you enter the next cave "cast flame dart" then "cast zap" and then
type "fight", keep pressing 'cursor up key' no matter what, as the Kobold will
eventually die and leave behind a key which you then use to unchain the bear.

It will then transform back to the Baron's son and leave, now go to the Baron's
castle and get that big reward!!!.

Goto the screen where the blue giant appears and make a bargin with him, then
goto town buy 50 apples and give them to him in exchange for a glowing gem.

Take the gem to Baba Yaga's place and give it to the skull on the fence, then
after the gate is open type "say rhyme" then type "hut of brown now sit down"
and the hut on chicken legs should sit and you can go inside.

Baba Yaga (What a stupid name) should appear and turn you into a frog, ask you
stuff (to which you answer YES!) and then send you out to get her mandrake
root.

Pull the root at midnight and take it back to her, she will let you go.
Go back to Erana's Peace and use the open spell to move the rock and get the
scroll for another good spell.

Go to the door where the waterfall is and use the detect magic spell (Meeps)
and this should show the ladder that can be climbed to reach the door.

Climb it and knock, moving out the way to avoid the little idiot from knocking
you off the cliff face, go inside talk and ask questions to clock up points
then leave.

Go back to town and go to the tavern, there should be a bit of paper under a
stool, read it then go to the old archery target and carefully listen to the
two thieves talking, then after one leaves wait one minute before moving to
give him time to have left the forest, then move round and attack the other
killing him and taking his key, the key is not really important if you are a
magician, but is if you are the fighter.

The password they talk about is "hiden goseke" and the creature called bouncer
is that ANTWERP that hops around near those rocks.

Go to magic mountain and go up to the wizards house, you will then be asked 3
questions before being allowed to pass. This is the bit where the manual is
needed, but I've managed to sus out several answers, so if you get aksed them
you can get into the house :

WHAT IS YOUR NAME - just say your character name
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR - pink
WHAT IS THE THIEVES PASSWORD - hiden goseke
WHO HAVE YOU COME TO SEE - wizard
WHAT IS YOUR GOAL - to become hero of speilburg
WHAT IS THE BARON'S FIRST NAME - stefan
WHO'S SPELL PROTECTS THE TOWN - erana

The wizard is upstairs, go there and talk to him, he'll ask if you have the
trigger spell, since you won't go back to the hermit and ask for it, go back to
the wizards place and play the maze game against him.

It's a bloody hard game which gave me the complete shits!!!, but don't be too
pissed off, I managed to win on my 7th try, the controls are :

Trigger : spell which changes size of your man
                          -small for quick distance coverage
                          -middle size for climbing ladders
-big for beating up wizard's man and sending him
                           back to the start.
Fetch : For getting a bridge or ladder and dragging it to where you like.
Flame : For stalling wizard's man.
Open : moves a rock away from a tunnel.
You can also send the wizards man back to the start if you fetch a bridge or
ladder while he is on it.

When you make contact with his man the smaller of the two is sent back to the
start, so use the trigger spell to make yours big if they look like meeting.
You will also notice the often erratic and weird movement of these little men,
and should remember that you have no control over it, once I was only several mm
from the finish and the little idiot just started back the other way for no
reason, so be patient and tolerant!.

After completing that shit game and beating the wizard you will be given a good
spell called dazzel.

Practice it and any other new spells you get to build up your skill levels for
each.

Now to go visit the Brigands and kill the warloc, this is where I am currently
stuck so if you do kill him let me know how!.

O.K. goto where the ANTWERP is and goto to the lefthand area of rocks and either
use the open spell or key, then type "open cave".

Before you enter the cave type "say hiden goseke" which makes fred the troll
move further down the passage.

Don't make the mistake of killing him in the narrow passage like I did as he
then blocks your route and you will have to start over.

The go left to fred's cavern, kill him, and search his pile of shit for money.
Cut off his beard and then go right two screens and you should see the fortress
and guard.

This guy is the toughest fighter of the lot, so when you kill him you'll know
your character is a real tough dude!, O.K. after killing climb over the fence,
you may have to type "climb" several times to practice first.

Then you should see the stolen rugs with a note on them, don't go near them as
they are part of a trap, instead go carefully around the left barrier without
touching the jack-in-the-box and cross the plank with the note on it, then go up
to the crates and type "step over rope" to avoid being squashed by another

ANTWERP, and amble on inside.
O.K. now bolt the door behind you and then walk up to the right most door and
"block door", now here's where I am stuck as I can't figure out how to use the
chandelier and rope to stop those three brigands who look like the 3 stooges.
From here on you'll have to experiment!.
If you get past them please let me know how!

Further info :
Making money
------------
The potion maker will pay money for limited amounts of -
(1) Mushrooms - a gold
(2) Flowers - several silver
(3) Trolls beards - 2 healing potions
(4) Claws - several gold

If you come across a trappoed fox during the game, release it for further points
and info, above all talk to people, especially the Baron's gate keeper, he's a
real motor mouth!.

Strategic Locations Not Mentioned
---------------------------------

In the grave yard the thieves have placed their treasure, how you open the
graves I just can't figure out, also I have tried to use the Undead Unguent
against the ghosts but it does not seem to work!

The goblins place is indicated by a pile of rocks, and don't worry about them as
they are real whimps!

Follow the white stag to get to the Hydra's place.
Good Luck,
           Danger Mouse

Doc Savage's further solutions to Hero's quest.

Ok..in the fortress room, first type "close door". then move to the upper
right hand door and type "use chair". Now type "use candelabra" (get the
spelling right!!!!). By this stage, the three stooges will have walked in.
Walk to the front of the table and wait until the stooges start to walk
back to turn the corner of the table. When all three are moving, type
"climb up". Now the rest will happen automatically, until the chandelier
falls onto the stooges. As soon as this happens, go through the door on
the back wall. DO NOT DALLY!!!!

Now you will be in "ME"'s domain. Walk around until you fall off the
platform. Now you will be in an endless loop of you somersaulting through
the right hand upper door and rolling off the platform again and again.

To stop rolling, simply type "stop". now you will stop near the door
with the smiley faces and circles. Go through the door and you will appear
in the door on the left wall high up. Type"pull chain" and the door at
the upper right back will open. Go back until you come back out of the
smiley door, and walk up through the open back door. BE CAREFUL of the
dickhead, as he will start throwing crap at you, which will knock you off
the platform again! Once you make it through the door, you will appear
in the cave on the left wall. QUICKLY move to the back wall and type "open
door". Now, QUICKLY get back into the cave, otherwise the door falls on
you!! After it has fallen, another door will be revealed behind it. Go
to this door and type "open door" again. Now you will be in the brigand
leader's room. You will notice that the brigand leader looks female, and
you'll be right, because it's the Baron's daughter. DO NOT FIGHT!!!!

Type "use dispel potion". Now she will turn back into the baron's
daughter. She will crap on a bit, and then her and Yorick will disappear.
NOTE CAREFULLY where Yorick came into the room, as that is the secret exit.

Go to the desk and type "get potions". Then type "get mirror".
This mirror is Erasmus' magic mirror, which reflects spells back onto the
caster. DO NOT hang around, as the brigands will break in and cream you.

Instead immediately leave the room through the secret exit. Now you will
appear out at where the Antwerp is. Head north and search until you find
Baba Yaga's place. Now do the "Hut of brown now sit down" crap and type
"sneak". This makes it easier to enter the hut. Type "use mirror".

Baba Yaga will try to turn you into a frog. Instead, the spell will be
reflected in the mirror, and Baba Yaga ends up as the frog!!. She will
kick you out of the house (similiar to when you leave Erasmus'), and the hut
will take off.

CONGRATULATIONS!! Now you have completed the game!

Wait through all the end bit, including the credits, until it comes up
with the ad for Hero's Quest II. After that, it will ask for a blank,
formatted floppy to SAVE your character for use in HQ II!! Pretty different
for a Sierra adventure.

Additional notes.

-Instead of fighting the minotaur, as DM says, you can cast a "calm".
It will go to sleep!
-You may "force gate" instead of climbing the wall of the fortress.
-I found the thief to be the best character, though DM says he thought
it was the worst!! Well I attempted several games with different chars,
-At night in the town, you can rob the old lady's house and the Sherrif's,
but do not leave to enter other rooms, as they are bedrooms, and you will
be caught! (remember to"sneak", so you don't make noise).
-DO NOT drink the Dragon's breath at the tavern. It disentegrates you!
-Ignore the flashing coin in the alley beside the tavern at night. It
is an illusion to fool you. Two thieves will attack and kill you if
you go to get it!
-I COULD NOT figure out how to get into the thieves guild in the
graveyard. If anybody finds out, tell us!!!
-Use "undead unguent" to ward off the ghosts in the graveyard at night.
-I couldn't find a way to get the goblin's treasure from under the rock
pile. If you find out, tell me!
