The fact is that America and it's businesses cannot be trusted any longer. The international community is fed up with the American attitude "here today, gone tommorrow". I mean, lets just take a look at how American's run their country: President: "Well, we are doing outstanding this quarter. So let us fund a Trillion dollar space station". Senator: "Ok, i'll call up all the other countries and get them involved with it". Senator: "Look (Japan, France, England, ...) we are committed to build a fabulous space station. Yea, the President wants it as soon as possible". NEXT QUARTER. President: "We are in a slump, what should we do?" Senator: "Lets cut back on our space station a little, make it a little cheaper". NEXT QUARTER. President: "Still in the slump. Lets kill the space station. My election is soon and the people need to be happy". 2 QUARTERS LATER President: "Well, now things are going well, call up all those countries and start up that space station again". Senator: "Well, (Japan, England, ect...) we are doing well now, so let us make up and work together again on that space station project". In just few QUARTERS we started a project, partly worked on it and restarted it again. The International community does'nt really work this way. Japan thinks in terms of 50 years, Europe too, about 50 years. America thinks in terms of now. This very minute. The cause of this shock is unknown, but may be related to several long-duration low-level M-class flares which occurred over the last few days. The shock was accompanied by an increase in protons at greater than 10 MeV. Protons reached 17 pfu at 13:55 UT and peaked at 20 pfu at 15:05 UT on 31 May. A gradual decay has been observed since then. The source of this proton activity is uncertain. Polar and high latitude regions may experience increased daytime absorption. Errors may also exist on navigational frequencies over polar and possibly high latitude paths. Middle latitude geomagnetic activity is expected to begin to decay later in the day on 01 June. There is a risk for additional terrestrial impacts as Region 6654 continues to traverse the solar disk. Geomagnetic activity could reach minor to major storm levels over the high latitude regions during the local evening hours of 31 May/01 June. Middle latitudes could experience additional minor storming during this period as well. Auroral activity became high over the northerly middle and high latitudes after 09:00 UT on 31 May, although lunar phase inhibited attempts to view significant details of the activity. A good opportunity exists for observing possible moderate to high auroral activity on the evening of 31 May before the Moon rises in the late evening over the northerly middle and high latitudes. Central middle latitudes could also witness some activity, although most of it is expected to be limited to the northerly middle and high latitude regions. No low latitude auroral activity is expected. Significant HF degradation was observed after 09:00 UT associated with the geomagnetic storming. Daytime improvements can be expected followed by some degradation in night-time propagation conditions until 02 June (barring further terrestrial impacts). There will be a chance for VHF auroral backscatter communications over the middle to high latitude regions on the evening of 31 May. Conditions are expected to become unfavorable for backscatter on 01 June, barring any further future terrestrial impacts. PLEASE SEND ANY REPORTS OF DEGRADED RADIO PROPAGATION CONDITIONS, SIGHTINGS OF AURORAL ACTIVITY, VHF BACKSCATTER COMMUNICATIONS OR OTHER ANOMALIES TO: OLER@HG.ULETH.CA (INTERNET), OLER@ALPHA.ULETH.CA (USENET), OR (SNAIL-MAIL) TO: SOLAR TERRESTRIAL DISPATCH, P.O. I once heard an astronaut discribe and show slides, of a VERY clear national boundary. The picture was of the Israeli/Jordanian border. in Israel, the land was filled with small green areas (e.g small, well irigated plots of farmland). In Jordan, the land was full of larger, brown region (less productive, less well irrigated land) The difference was VERY apparent, and the change between the two CLEARLY marked the border. This was easily visable from orbit. >[statement of the world's problems and the need for solutions.] > ...Let's do it by not building >weapons of mass destruction!!!! Can you, using at least roughly accurate numbers explain how a space station which pays its own way (I am assuming a priori that any suggested station MUST do this and suggesting ways it could) is "a severe detriment and disincentive to the development of space industry"? >Real infrastructure is developed by mutual agreement and business >partnership of the parties concerned, not by dictation from >politically motivated central planners pulling numbers out of the blue. > Please read my more recient post. My numbers are not, in fact, pulled out of the blue. Further, I never said ANYTHING about who would fund the suggested space station. I simply stated estimated costs and capabilities. If the concept is viable, it is as likely that a business partnership would build it as the government. The most active day of the period was 25 May. Minor to major geomagnetic storming was observed over the high latitudes while periods of minor storming were observed over the middle latitudes. Activity will remain unsettled with periods of active conditions over all latitudes for the next day or two. Thereafter, a return to quiet to unsettled conditions may be expected by early June.
