The responses were mixed, with a few people recommending an IBM PC based program (.exe, no source). Nope, sorry, I'm not interested in a PC .exe file. Files compressed into .zip format aren't much use either. I could work with Stuffit (.sit), .tar or the source... However, several people did respond with usefull information. Since I believe in giving credit where credit is due, they were: Jonathan McDowell - Who gave me exactly what I asked for: A complete formula that converts from the orbital elements & elapsed mission time to lat/lon & altitude. This is exactly what I wanted! Patrick Nolan Whaley - Who pointed out that source code for orbital calculations resides on platypus.uofs.edu in the pub/HAM-RADIO subdirectory. The file of particular importance is: orbit3.9.tar.Z - This program appears to convert from Nasa's two line elements to lat/lon & altitude (among other things). Richard Langley & Brad Mears - Who gave me good book references. Both recommended: Fundamentals of Astrodynamics by R.R. Bate, D.D. Mueller and J.E. White. 1971. Dover Publications, Inc., 180 Varick St., New York, NY 10014. ISBN 0-486-60061-0. Richard's list was extensive (and detailed!). Jonathan's formula and Richard's list are available on request. Perhaps both should be put into an Orbital Mechanics FAQ file. I'll try compiling orbit3.9 tonight or tomorrow. I'll also look into putting Jonathan's formula into C form as well. Thanks Jonathan, Patrick, Richard and Brad, and everyone else who commented on my orbital mechanics question. In a way, every time you set up a mechanism to fund research, that research inherits the goals, and some of the problems, of whatever that mechanism is, whether it be public trust, corporate funding, or secret slush fund. The inventors you mention funded themselves out of their entrepenuerial businesses, which gave them the freedom to pursue ideas "outside the mainstream". starting a business to fund your own rsearch is definatly the best way to go for truly free R & D. The official count was: 178 YES 17 NO By usenet newsgroup creation guidelines, a group must have 100 more YES votes than NO votes, and the YES votes must have 2/3 of the majority (66.6%). Sci.geo.meteorology had 161 more YES votes than NO votes, and the YES votes had 91% of the majority. Therefore, sci.geo.meteorology passes. Despite the mailing problems we had with a server for our domain, I think that everyone who wanted to vote, did vote. Sci.geo.meteorology doesn't seem to have a lot of opposition, as seen clearly by the votes counted. So the green light is on for some awesome weather discussion! As always, there is a 5 day waiting period to clear up any problems with the voting. If I don't receive any mail regarding problems with the voting by April 21, 1991, the newsgroup gets created. Any mail can be sent to me, Jason J. Levit, at this address: vortex@vpnet.chi.il.us (or uunet!tellab5!vpnet!vortex) Thanks to all who participated in the voting, and get your ideas ready for discussion! The charter and vote acknowledgement follow: NAME: sci.geo.meteorology CHARTER: Discussion of meteorology and related topics. MODERATION STATUS: Unmoderated PURPOSE AND JUSTIFICATION: Our lives are effected daily by the weather. However, this is not new news. In the past few years, meteorology has fast become a cutting-edge science. Scientists are now optimizing the way forecasts are made; supercomputers are studying chaos theory and its relation to the atmosphere; fascinating research is taking place on severe weather and tornados, with research on new types of radar; microbursts and wind shear are being studied heavily; of course global warming, hurricane research, lightning...the list goes on and on. I believe interesting discussion could take place in this newsgroup. It would be a benefit to professionals in the field, students, and the general public by the exchange of information on the various topics of the atmosphere.
